ECOWAS Travel Certificates

Eligibility.

• All Nationals of Countries that are signatories to the  ECOWAS Treaty .
• It is valid for travel within the  ECOWAS  Sub-region.

Purpose of Travel Certificate

• It is a recognized travel document valid for travels within the Sixteen (16) Countries of ECOWAS.
• This proves that the holder is a community citizen.
• It can be held concurrently with the National Passport.

Issuing Authority

The certificate is issued at the Service Headquarters, 36 State Commands, FCT office as well as all Immigration offices in the 774 local governments of the Federation.

Requirements for Issuance of ECOWAS Travel Certificate

• Duly completed application form
• Three(3) recent colored (4×4 cm) passport photographs
• Evidence of age (birth certificate or statutory declaration of age)
• Letter of Introduction from Employer (for salaried workers only)
• Letter of confirmation of Nigerian Citizenship from applicant’s Local Government Chairman.
• Students and Trainee applicants shall obtain letters of introduction from the heads of their institutions accepting Immigration Responsibility  (IR)
• Any other document which might be required by any locality as evidence of Nigerian Citizenship.
• A Travel Certificate shall be valid for two (2) years and shall be renewable for a further period of two (2) years.

Replacement, Amendments etc

A travel Certificate may be replaced on the following conditions:

• If the pages are exhausted while the certificate is still valid.
• If the certificate has lasted for the ten years total validity period.
• If it is mutilated in any form or requires amendment.
• If it is confirmed lost or stolen.

Replacement

Application for replacement shall be made in the same or any other prescribed form, and supported by attaching the certificate to be replaced. Lost or stolen certificate may only be replaced after a reasonable time must have elapsed (i.e. about two to six months) and must be supported with.

Countries That Do Not Accept Ecowas Travel Certificate

Some of the countries within the Ecowas community are not accepting the Ecowas Travel Certificate. The travel certificate was supposed to allow nationals of the Countries that are signatories to the ECOWAS Treaty to travel within the Ecowas without restrictions/Visas.

Below is the list of countries that do not accept the Ecowas Travel Certificate.

◦ 1. Guinea

◦ 3. Senegal

◦ 4. Sierra-Leone

◦ 5. Cape Verde or Cabo Verde

◦ 6. Ivory Coast/Côte d’Ivoire

Anyone travelling to any of the countries listed above is advised to travel with the Ecowas Passport instead of the travel certificate.

How To Obtain ECOWAS Travel Certificate In Nigeria

ECOWAS travel certificate is simply a permit that allows citizens of member states to travel to any of the countries in ECOWAS sub-region without interruption .

Nigeria is a member state of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Sovereign nations under ECOWAS through their representatives come together at intervals to deliberate on issues affecting them as a body.

Some of these key issues include security challenges which are the commonest problem among nations of the world, another issue is that of boundary disputes, health challenges, and others are discussed and solutions adopted.

However, the most common issues that arise between nations are the movement of people from one country to another; since one of the functions of government is the protection of lives and property, the government is obliged to see to the welfare of its citizens at home and Diaspora.

This is one of the reasons for creating ministries of external affairs, embassies, and consulates to take care of her citizens in various countries.

Embassies and consulates work out criteria for issuance of travel certificate which can permit one into their country.

This requirement is unified for all Nationals of Countries that are signatories to the ECOWAS Treaty and is valid for two (2) years after which it can be renewed for a further period of two (2) years.

This ECOWAS Travel Certificate serves a dual purpose, namely;

(a) Passport :

Just like countries in other continents of the world, Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) established a procedure that if followed will enhance movement of people interchangeably. 

ECOWAS passport is a recognised travel document valid for journeys within the Sixteen (16) Countries of ECOWAS. Nigerians who want to travel should obtain an ECOWAS passport at any immigration office in all the states in the country and Abuja.

(b) Form of Identity :

This form is specifically to prove the identity of the holder as community citizen. It can be held concurrently with the National Passport.  It can also be used as official means of identity anywhere in any ECOWAS sub-region.

Below are the requirements for ECOWAS certificate.

Any other form of permission apart from the ones specified in this article is illegal and can amount to jail term or option of fine if caught.

Hello, is there somewhere a working howto that shows how to add a private CA (2 intermediate certs and one root cert) to FreeBSD 11.3? I found this one ( https://blog.socruel.nu/freebsd/how-to-install-private-CA-on-freebsd.html ) but I can't make it to work. Testing the CA file directly works: Code: openssl s_client -connect host:443 -CAfile ca.pem ... Verify return code: 0 (ok) Any help would be great Regards Henning

It depends on what you want to do with the certificate. This has very little to do with FreeBSD itself. For example, if you want to use it for a web server, you have to install it in your web server’s configuration. Consult your web server’s documentation for that. In the case of Apache httpd, you usually store them in /usr/local/etc/apache*/ssl , and you might have to make small changes to a configuration file. If you want to make the certificate known to your web browser, then it depends on the browser. For example, in Chrome open the settings page and go to the “Privacy and security” section, then select the “Manage certificates” entry. To make the certificate available to OpenSSL-based applications, put it in /etc/ssl/certs .

Hi olli, my intention was to make all OpenSSL-based applications trust the certificates which has been and will be signed by those CA certificates. I can verify the certificate chain by using openssl s_client -connect with the -CAfile option but when I put that file into /etc/ssl/certs and run the same command without the option the return code changes from 0 (ok) to 21 (21 (unable to verify the first certificate).

Hi there, thanks for all your help. Adding the certs to /usr/local/share/certs/ca-root-nss.crt did work, but re-adding them every time the package gets updated is not so great. Is there way to set -CApath option as default in a .conf file? And how can the ca-root-nss then be. added as well? Henning  

mmh now this is strange or better embarrassing for me ;-). I deleted the CAs from the bundle file and created the hashs from the CA files with sudo openssl x509 -noout -hash -in CA.pem created the symbolic links ln -s CA.pem HASH-FROM-CMD-BEFORE.0 in /etc/ssl/certs and it works now.... So sorry stealing all your time Regards Henning

openssl rehash <folder containing certificates> should do the equivalent of the two commands above. Unfortunately, the man page for this gets tromped by the shell builtins rehash() one.  

Just tried that command but in my 11.3 jail I get this response Code: openssl:Error: 'rehash' is an invalid command. it looks like the rehash option comes with 12.0

Found simple way: https://www.linuxpedia.pl/articles/freebsd-certs/ 1. Copy certificate to /usr/local/etc/ssl/certs (create if necessary). 2. Run certctl rehash - it will put it in all the places necessary and update respective databases/links.

I think both browsers have (or at least had some time ago) private certificate store where you can import own/custom certificates. Like here https://docs.titanhq.com/en/55958-importing-ssl-certificate-in-mozilla-firefox.html

Firefox on Windows also ignores Window's certificate store and simply uses its own store.

It's a royal mess. But you learn to live with it. In any case, by default security.enterprise_roots.enabled is set to false, in other words, it defaults to using it's own certificate store.
