Arriving from Other Parts of Italy

Tuscany is well-served by Italy’s extensive train network. The high-speed trains from cities like Rome, Milan , and Venice make getting to Tuscany both quick and convenient. Florence’s main station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, is a major hub connecting Tuscany to the rest of Italy.

Getting Around Tuscany

Public transportation.

Trains: The train network in Tuscany is quite extensive, connecting not only the major cities but also smaller towns. They are generally punctual, affordable, and efficient.

Buses: For some of the smaller towns and villages, bus is the only public transport available. Although they can be less predictable than trains, buses can get you to places trains can’t reach.

Renting a car can be an excellent option if you wish to explore the countryside or visit vineyards at your own pace. Do remember that driving in Italy requires an International Driving Permit along with your regular driver’s license for non-EU citizens. Also, many city centers in Tuscany are limited traffic zones (ZTLs) and are camera-controlled. Driving into these zones without a permit will result in a fine.

Taxis are readily available in cities and larger towns. Uber operates in Florence and is another convenient option for getting around.

Best Time to Visit: Tuscany is a year-round destination, but the ideal times to visit are between April and June, and September and October when the weather is comfortable and the countryside is at its most vibrant.

Language: Italian is the official language. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.

Currency: Euro (€) is the official currency of Italy.

Safety: Tuscany is generally safe for tourists, but like any other tourist destination, be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places.

Electricity: Italy operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. The power plugs and sockets are of type F and L.

The Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is another highlight, featuring intricate Gothic architecture. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers fantastic art, great dining, and world-class gelato at the Gelateria Dondoli, a two-time champion of the Gelato World Cup. The Top Tuscany Wine Tours & Tastings

Frequently Asked Questions about Wine Tours in Tuscany

What kinds of tuscany wine tours and wine tasting experiences are there.

Tuscany offers a rich variety of wine tours and tastings that cater to all tastes and preferences. For instance, there are full day private tours from Florence, led by a knowledgeable sommelier, offering the chance to visit three different wineries and enjoy an authentic Tuscan lunch. For those looking to combine scenic drives with wine, consider the excursion that pairs a Fiat 500 tour with a visit to a 15th-century wine estate. Alternatively, you can delve into Siena’s surrounding vineyards on a small group tasting tour that educates your palate with the help of a sommelier. For those seeking a unique countryside experience, a horseback riding tour in the Tuscan countryside lets you unwind at a country resort with a full Tuscan lunch and local Chianti wine. These are just a few examples of the range of experiences Tuscany has to offer. Each tour provides a unique way to explore the region’s world-renowned wine culture. To learn more and book a wine tour that suits your preference, please check our detailed guide.

When is the best time of year for a wine tour in Tuscany?

The best time to visit Tuscany for a wine tour largely depends on your personal preferences, but there are a few peak periods that are particularly popular. Spring (April to June) and Fall (September and October) are often considered the ideal times for a Tuscan wine tour. The weather during these seasons is typically mild and pleasant, and the landscape is at its most vibrant – with blooming flowers in spring, and changing leaves in the fall. Fall is also the time of the grape harvest (known as “vendemmia”), which can be a fascinating process to witness. Some wineries even allow visitors to participate in the harvest. Summer (July and August) in Tuscany can be quite hot, and many Italians go on vacation in August, which means some wineries might be closed. However, the region is still beautiful during this time and the wine tours are certainly still operational. Winter (November to March) is the low tourist season in Tuscany. While the weather can be cooler and wetter, there are fewer tourists, making it a good time to visit if you prefer to avoid crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, it’s always a good idea to check with individual wineries or tour companies in advance for their operating hours and to book your tour.

What is the main wine region in Tuscany?

The most renowned wine region in Tuscany is the Chianti region, famous for producing Chianti and Chianti Classico wines. It’s characterized by its idyllic rolling hills, historic vineyards, and scenic villages. The Chianti region is situated between Florence and Siena, making it conveniently accessible for tourists and wine lovers. However, Tuscany boasts several other notable wine-producing areas. For example, Montalcino, located south of the Chianti region, is renowned for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. Nearby, Montepulciano produces the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Further west towards the coast, you’ll find the Bolgheri region, known for its superb “Super Tuscan” wines, a term referring to high-quality wines that don’t adhere to traditional Italian wine regulations but have nonetheless achieved worldwide recognition. Each of these areas offers unique variations in climate, soil, and winemaking traditions, contributing to the diversity and richness of Tuscan wines.

Luxury Tuscany Wine Tour, 7 days

Tuscany Hills

I declare to have read, understood and I agree with the policy privacy

A week-long Tuscany Wine Tour starting and finishing in Florence promises an immersive experience. Picture yourself wandering through picturesque vineyards, sipping on exquisite wines, and indulging in the rich flavors of the region. From renowned appellations to hidden gems, it’s a wine lover’s dream. The blend of culture, history, and, of course, delicious wine makes this journey truly unforgettable. Get ready for a week of Tuscany’s finest!

Day 1 – Private Art Guided Tour & Gourmet Dining – Your journey begins with a warm welcome from your English-speaking chauffeur at the FLR airport, whisking you to a luxurious hotel in Florence’s historical center. After settling in, your private art guide takes you on a captivating 2.5 hours walking tour tour. A welcome aperitif sets the tone for an exploration of Florence’s gems, including Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria. As you navigate the “Centro Storico,” hidden gourmet gems await, enhancing the charm of the cobblestone streets and lively atmosphere. The city’s rich artistic history unfolds, creating an enchanting backdrop. In the afternoon, savor a glass of wine on a stylish terrace or dive into shopping and sightseeing. The highlight? A culinary masterpiece at Cibreo, led by the poetic and wizard-like chef, as acclaimed by The New York Times. His culinary expertise makes this dining experience truly exceptional. Your time in Florence promises a perfect blend of sophistication and cultural richness.

Day 2 – Chianti Classico Wine Tasting (change of hotel)  – Your day begins with a sumptuous full breakfast at your hotel, setting the perfect tone for what lies ahead – a wine tasting extravaganza in the Chianti Classico region. Your chauffeur, your guide to the day’s adventures awaits at 9am to escort you through the enchanting Chiantigiana route, a journey into the heart of Sangiovese territory. After visiting a lovely medieval hilltown, stop at a top-rated family winery where a private tour unfolds. Explore the vineyard, cellar, and the nuances of winemaking before indulging in a tasting of their finest wines. But it doesn’t stop there – experience the depth of flavor with Balsamic Vinegars and Olive Oils, adding a unique touch to your palate. Your exuberant host guides you through the property and a great lunch! Each dish thoughtfully paired with the aforementioned wines, making it a culinary symphony. Post-lunch, the picturesque town of Siena beckons. Your personal art guide unveils the secrets of Siena through an “insider’s tour,” leading you to hidden corners of this enchanting town. Once your senses are filled with art and history, your castle hotel awaits by 4pm on the Chianti hilltops. The evening is yours to explore the hotel’s restaurant, promising a serene and charming retreat. A day intricately woven with wine, gastronomic delights, art, and the timeless beauty of Chianti – it’s not just a journey; it’s an immersive experience in the heart of Tuscany.

Day 3 – Montalcino & Montepulciano VIP Wine Tastings – What an extraordinary day awaits you! After a delightful breakfast, at 9am your chauffeur sets the stage for VIP Wine Tastings in Montalcino and Montepulciano. Montalcino, famed for Brunello di Montalcino wines, beckons with a VIP visit to the prestigious Poggio Antico estate. Before the winery, a quick stop at the 9th-century Abbazia di Sant’Antimo adds a touch of history. At Poggio Antico, explore barrel caves, installations, and relish breathtaking views. The tasting includes Brunello “Riservas” and Rosso di Montalcinos, a sensory journey into the heart of Sangiovese Grosso. Lunch at the winery’s restaurant promises a culinary treat. The journey continues to Montepulciano, an Etruscan gem perched on steep hills. Explore its charming streets, enotecas, and historic palaces. Visit a top estate like Valdpiatta or Avignonesi for a tasting of Vino Nobile wines, basking in the DOCG certification. As the afternoon unfolds, enjoy free time in Montepulciano before the transfer back to your castle hotel by 5pm. A day of exquisite wines, historical marvels, and the enchanting landscapes of Tuscany – it’s a journey for the senses!

Day 4 – To Maremma (change of hotel)  – Embarking at 9am on a captivating journey, today marks your venture southwest to the mystical Maremma, a somewhat undiscovered gem in Tuscany. Renowned locally for its glamorous Tyrrhenian sea beaches and the opulence of Porto Argentario’s millionaire’s yachts, Maremma has an intriguing facet that often surprises non-Italians – the ‘butteri’ or cowboys. In a legendary showdown in 1911, these butteri famously outperformed Buffalo Bill in a colt-breaking contest, adding a unique charm to the region’s cultural tapestry. For wine enthusiasts, the proximity to Bolgheri, home to renowned names like Ornellaia and Sassicaia, adds a layer of allure. However, today’s focus is on soaking up the rich culture of Maremma. Your exploration includes visits to Montemerano and Pitigliano, two charming towns with their own stories to tell. Lunch is a treat in Pitigliano, often referred to as Italy’s “Little Jerusalem” due to its significant Jewish heritage and an ancient synagogue that graces its streets. As the day unfolds, the journey leads you by 5pm to a country villa-style hotel, a former aristocratic hunting lodge that now stands as a luxurious five-star haven in Southern Tuscany. Here, culinary excellence takes center stage with Alain Ducasse, France’s most celebrated chef, serving as a consultant. His Tuscan-inspired creative menu adds a gourmet touch to your stay, promising a delightful fusion of history, culture, and luxury. In Maremma, each moment is an exploration, and this chapter of your Tuscan adventure promises a tapestry woven with tales of cowboys, beaches, and the exquisite flavors of the region.

Day 5 – To Bolgheri for VIP Wine Tastings at Petra & Ornellaia –  Embark at 9am on a day dedicated to the opulent world of Super Tuscans, where the last three decades have witnessed the rise of small “garage” style wineries producing some of the world’s most exceptional and, quite notably, expensive wines, reaching a staggering 400 euros a bottle! This extraordinary journey begins with a visit to Petra, a winery designed by the famed architect Mario Botta. Here, the convergence of art and wine creates an atmosphere that transcends the ordinary, elevating the tasting experience to a sublime level. The odyssey continues to Ornellaia, nestled in the castle-crowned village of Bolgheri, renowned as one of Italy’s premier cellars. Ornellaia’s wines are not just beverages; they are expressions of passion, craftsmanship, and the terroir. The symphony of flavors and aromas unfolds, leaving an indelible impression on your palate. Post-wine “breakfast,” a gastronomic haven awaits at Ombrone, a converted 13th-century olive oil mill. The hosts, radiating charm, treat you to an olive oil tasting before presenting a Tuscan-style lunch. Each dish tells a story, and the setting within this historic mill adds a layer of authenticity to the culinary journey. As the afternoon stretches before you, the choices are abundant. Perhaps a leisurely exploration of the beaches of Maremma, where the Tyrrhenian Sea meets the Tuscan shore, beckons. Alternatively, immerse yourself to the lap of luxury at your hotel, letting the day unfold at your pace. In Bolgheri, today isn’t just a destination; it’s a sensory voyage through the finest wines and flavors that Tuscany has to offer. A day to savor, appreciate, and create lasting memories in the heart of Super Tuscan territory

Day 6 – Return to Florence via San Gimignano – Start at 9am a perfect end to your Tuscany adventure awaits as you journey back to Florence, with a delightful stop in the captivating medieval village of San Gimignano. Often referred to as “the Manhattan of Tuscany” due to its many medieval towers, this picturesque gem is nestled amidst the rolling hills covered in vineyards, olive groves, and historic villages. As you drive northeast from the wild Maremma, San Gimignano emerges on the horizon. Take a leisurely break to explore this enchanting village at your own pace. Wander through cobblestoned streets adorned with ristoranti, wine shops, and charming ceramic boutiques. Explore medieval palaces and art museums, absorbing the rich history and culture that permeates the air. Before leaving, perch yourself on a terrace and indulge in the local white treasure, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The panoramic views and the delightful flavor of the wine create a serene moment in this medieval haven. Upon your return to Florence by 4pm, settle back into the same lovely hotel that welcomed you on your first night. This evening is yours to enjoy the city’s charm one last time. For dinner, consider Enoteca Pinchiorri if you seek the expertise of a famed Michelin-starred chef or La Giostra for a charming and lively atmosphere. Alternatively, consult your driver for personalized recommendations and savor your final night in Florence. A perfect finale to an unforgettable Tuscan journey.

Day 7 – Arrivederci…! – Your incredible wine tour of Tuscany comes to a close, filled with tastings in Chianti, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Super Tuscanand the enchanting San Gimignano. As you bid farewell, carry with you not just gourmet goodies but a profound appreciation for Tuscan wines, art, and architecture. Your driver is ready to transfer you to the airport, marking the end of a journey that blended the richness of local flavors with the timeless beauty of Tuscany. Until next time, may the memories of this extraordinary tour linger like the aftertaste of a fine Tuscan wine. Safe travels!

They want to include a winery, a nice lunch, and lots of time in the beautiful countryside. We have driven around the Chianti countryside, but not the region closer to the coast. However, we love Bolgheri wines so I am researching wineries and restaurants in that region. If anyone has a great recommendation, I would love to hear it.

My major question is about logistics. Our friends want to get an early start, so hubby and I plan to rent a car in Florence the day before, and stay in Pisa the night of September 30th. I have booked a room at the NH Hotel at Piazza della Stazione in Pisa . We will spend two nights there (September 30 until October 2) then take a train to Rome on October 2nd. My plan is to return the car at the Pisa Airport after we drop our friends off at their ship on October 1st, then take the People Mover to Pisa Centrale. On the morning of October 2nd, we will take a train to Rome.

How do we connect with our friends on the morning of October 1st? They want to start early, so we could meet them around 8:00am. We can park at the hotel in Pisa the night before. How long will it take to get to Livorno in the morning? Can we drive to their cruise ship, or do they need to take a shuttle to another spot in Livorno where we will pick them up? Will we have to drop them off at the same place or can we drop them closer to their ship?
