How do NFL teams travel during the season?

With the NFL season just around the corner, AeroTime takes a look at how the NFL teams travel during the 18-week ordeal

The National Football League (NFL) is preparing to kick off a new season with current champions the Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the Detroit Lions.

But how do the 32 teams within the NFL travel to games? Ahead of the start of the 18-week season, AeroTime takes a closer look.

Some teams will cover more than 25,000 miles (40,233 kilometers) during the football season. For example, the Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to travel a whopping 31,600 mi (50,855 km).

Other teams, like the Cincinnati Bengals, will fare better, with a schedule resulting in a total travel distance of 11,942 mi (19,218 km), making them the team with the fewest miles to cover, according to a chart prepared by Bookies.com.

The chart does not include the possibility that teams could stack travel when playing back-to-back games within the same region.

Only two private jets

Out of all 32 teams, only two, the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals, have their own aircraft.

The New England Patriots, based near Boston, the United States (US), bought a pair of Boeing 767-300ER aircraft in 2017. The two twin-aisle jets, registered as N225NE and N36NE, were delivered to American Airlines in 1991 before eventually being phased out by the airline in 2016.

According to ch-aviation data.com, as of May 31, 2016, N36NE had 99,342 Flight Hours (FH) and 15,656 Flight Cycles (FC), while N225NE had 99,267 FHs and 15,902 FCs.

However, neither of the aircraft joined the Patriots for the NFL preseason games. While one game (versus the Houston Texans) was played at home, images shared by their media team showed the Patriots traveling to Green Bay to play the Packers on a Delta Air Lines aircraft in mid-August 2023.

Both of the Patriots’ Boeing 767s are operated by Eastern Airlines and are currently undergoing maintenance at Kansas City International Airport (MCI), ch-aviation.com data showed.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals bought a Boeing 777-200ER in 2021. At the time, the team’s owner, Michael Bidwill, said that the ex-Delta Air Lines bird “will not only provide major convenience but also maximum comfort for our players when getting them to and from road games”.

Now registered as N867DA, the aircraft has been with the team since December 2021. While the Cardinals have played both of their preseason games in Pheonix, Arizona, so far, they will have to travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on August 26, 2023.

According to flightradar24.com data, the Boeing 777-200ER moved from Roswell International Air Center Airport (ROW) to San Antonio International Airport (SAT) on June 30, 2023.

Special-liveried aircraft

Several airlines over the years have introduced special liveries to commemorate their partnerships with NFL teams or to try to appeal to passengers within those teams’ home markets.

For example, the New York Jets have a partnership with JetBlue dating back to 2009, when the team named the carrier its official airline. A year later, JetBlue re-assured its commitment to the New York Jets by introducing the “JetGreen” livery, dedicated to the team.

In 2017, the airline unveiled an updated “JetGreen” livery on an Airbus A320, registered as N746JB.

Las Vegas Raiders’ colors can also be seen on an Allegiant Airlines Airbus A319, registered as N328NV, introduced in 2021, and a Viva Aerobus Airbus A320, registered as XA-VAK, introduced in 2022.

Why do airlines spend so much on sports sponsorship?

  • Sports Aviation

In 2014, Boeing painted one of its Boeing 747-8F aircraft with a special Seattle Seahawks sticker to celebrate the team reaching the Super Bowl.

According to planespotters.net data, the Seattle Seahawks livery was briefly sported by the aircraft between January and May 2014.

US Airways, which eventually merged with American Airlines, had several special NFL liveries, including paint jobs dedicated to the Arizona Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Carolina Panthers.

AirTran, which merged with Southwest Airlines in 2014, displayed liveries featuring the Atlanta Falcons, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Indianapolis Colts.

Nowadays, teams favor wide-body aircraft that are chartered to travel to away games.

Chartering to games

NFL entourages are huge. Team rosters alone are filled with 53 players, not to mention the coaching, medical, communications, and technical staff traveling to away games either eight or nine times per single regular season.

According to a Bleacher Report article from 2016, the Baltimore Ravens traveled with around 185 passengers on a trip. Bob Eller, the team’s then-senior vice president of Operations, told the publication that there were “more people involved in game day” that year than during previous NFL seasons.

In March 2023, Miami Dolphins published a behind-the-scenes video on YouTube which showed the team’s travel day logistics in partnership with Atlas Air. According to Scott Bullis, the senior director of Team Operations at the Miami Dolphins, the team hands over its schedule to Atlas Air the moment NFL publishes the schedule for the upcoming season in May in an attempt to reserve aircraft beforehand.

“We travel with approximately 180 passengers on the aircraft, about 69 players, 30 coaches, 70 support staff, and 10 media,” Bullis added. “We load approximately 10,000 pounds [4,535.9 kilograms] underneath the aircraft.”

The team travels with a specially configured Atlas Air Boeing 747-400, which has more business and first class seats.

“Normal 747s at Atlas [Air] have 477 seats and this one has 189,” David Mercado, a captain at Atlas Air, explained during the video.

Typically, though, NFL teams will use the services of the large scheduled commercial airlines in the US, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, which have wide-body aircraft to comfortably accommodate large traveling parties.

For example, the New York Jets flew on United Airlines charter flights during the 2022 season despite JetBlue being the official airline partner for the team.

Photographs taken when the team were heading to a game against the Denver Broncos in October 2022 show players boarding an aircraft with the old United Airlines livery. This includes an all-white top side of the fuselage with a grey bottom side separated by a golden stripe, as well as an all-blue engine cowling.

However, all of JetBlue’s engine cowlings have “jetblue.com” written on them, something that cannot be seen in the images.

When the Green Bay Packers traveled to London to play the New York Giants at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, pictures shared by local Green Bay news site showed that the team chartered a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787-9 to cross the Atlantic.

Other teams travel with airlines whose hubs coincide with the teams’ home cities, like Minnesota Vikings and Delta Air Lines, which has a hub at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). Another example is the Dallas Cowboys traveling with American Airlines to their preseason game in Seattle, with the airline’s main network hub being Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

49ers have the NFL’s worst travel distance disadvantage

The 2021 NFL schedule won’t be easy for the 49ers from a travel perspective.

San Francisco has the most net travel miles in the NFL in 2021, according to ESPN. The 49ers will travel nearly 8,000 miles more than their opponents, round trip.

The 49ers will also travel more than 28,000 miles over the course of the 2021 season, the most of any team. But net travel miles matter more than total distance traveled, because net travel miles factor in how far your opponent is traveling, too. Traveling to London may take a lot out of you, but your opponent has to make the trip too, so it evens out. (All four teams playing in London this year are East Coast teams.)

But the 49ers have a lot of road trips to far away places, and their opponents don’t have to travel as far to play them.

How should we look at net travel miles? For starters, disregard division games, because every team plays its divisional opponents once at home and once on the road, so whatever travel disadvantage you go through to play a division road game, that division opponent is going to have the same disadvantage when it visits you.

Also keep in mind that this year, the NFL’s first 17-game season, NFC teams will play nine road games, while AFC teams will play nine home games. Unsurprisingly, the 12 teams with the worst travel distance disadvantage all play in the NFC.

The 49ers have non-division trips to Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, Jacksonville, Cincinnati and Tennessee. Their non-division home games are against Green Bay, Indianapolis, Minnesota and Houston.

Rams to travel 4th-most miles in the nfl this season, share this article.

For the Rams, there are pros and cons to playing in Los Angeles. The weather is perfect, the TV market is huge, the stadium is magnificent and the beach is nearby. One of the biggest downsides, however, is the amount of travel required each year.

As a West Coast team, the Rams are often among the league leaders in miles traveled. That’s because the majority of NFL teams are located in the Central or Eastern time zones. In fact, only seven teams are located in the Mountain or Pacific time zones.

In 2021, the Rams will once again rack up the miles, but not in the way they did last year. According to ESPN, they’ll travel the fourth-most miles in the NFL at around 25,000. The 49ers will travel the most, followed by the Seahawks and Jaguars.

pic.twitter.com/u223tCVwtx — Brian Burke (@bburkeESPN) May 13, 2021

The Rams have road games in New York, Baltimore, Green Bay, Houston, Minnesota and Indianapolis, besides the other three in the NFC West. That beats having to make trips to Philadelphia, Buffalo, Washington, Miami and Tampa Bay, as the Rams did last year.

When accounting for the number of miles their opponents have to travel, however, the Rams’ schedule doesn’t look as bad. ESPN calculates that the Rams’ net miles (sum of Rams’ miles minus miles opponents will travel to L.A.) are only the ninth-most in the NFL.

Almost forgot these. More important than total travel miles: pic.twitter.com/IetnrRjMYd — Brian Burke (@bburkeESPN) May 13, 2021

So in other words, it could be worse. Just look at that bar next to the 49ers.

Here's how far each NFL team will travel in 2022: Steelers get huge advantage, Buccaneers face brutal slate

The buccaneers will be traveling more miles than the steelers, ravens and lions combined.

tomlin-kc.png

If any player on the Buccaneers roster suffers from jet lag, they might want to think about asking for a trade before the season starts because Tampa Bay is going to be spending more time in the air this year than any other team in the NFL.

The Buccaneers will be traveling a total of 26,562 miles this season, which is more than the Steelers, Ravens and Lions will travel  combined  (23,052 miles). The Buccaneers' biggest trip in 2022 will be a flight to Munich in November where they'll play the NFL's first game in Germany. On that flight alone, the Buccaneers will rack up more travel mileage than six teams will for the entire season . The flight to Germany and back will cover 9,992 miles, which is almost fitting, because Tom Brady holds roughly 9,992 NFL records.

Once they get to Germany, the Buccaneers will be playing a Seahawks team that will travel the second-most miles in 2022. (Depending on their final travel schedule, the Seahawks could actually end up traveling the most miles, which we'll cover later.) The Seahawks will be flying 10,566 miles roundtrip to Germany, which makes it the longest trip that any NFL team will go on this season.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Steelers will be traveling just 6,512 miles for the entire season . This year will mark the fourth time since 2014 that the Steelers have traveled the fewest miles, and it's probably worth noting that in each of the three prior years ( 2014 , 2016 , 2017 ), they ended up winning the AFC North.

The Steelers also won't be leaving the Eastern time zone, which is notable when you consider there are three teams that have to play in FIVE different time zones this year (Buccaneers, Broncos, Seahawks). As for the Steelers, they actually played every single one of their games in the Eastern time zone in 2016, so although it's uncommon for a team to have that, it's not unheard of.

One other advantage for the Steelers is that the team that travels the fewest miles has averaged 9.6 wins per season over the past eight years, which is how long we've been tallying travel miles. In 2021, the Bengals traveled the fewest miles and although they weren't expected to have a great season, they ended up going 10-7 and made it all the way to the Super Bowl. The team with the fewest travel miles has won its division in four of the past eight seasons and made the playoffs in five of the past eight.

On the other hand, the team that travels the most miles has only won its division one time over the past eight seasons and that came in 2020 with the Seahawks. That also happened to be a season where traveling was much easier due to the pandemic. Also, the team that travels the most miles has averaged just 6.4 wins per season over the past eight years.

Although the western-based teams usually rank at the top of the travel miles list, that's not the case this year. Of the six teams that will travel the most, only two of them are in one of the NFL's western divisions (Seahawks and Broncos).

The teams with the higher travel numbers this year mostly come from two groups: They're either playing an international game or they're an AFC team. (Due to the 17-game schedule, AFC teams will be playing nine road games this year.)

And then there's the poor Jaguars, who fall into both categories. The Jags are the only team in the NFL playing TEN games away from home this season. Not only do they have they have nine road games for being an AFC team, but they'll also be playing one "home" game in London. Thanks to those two facts, the Jags are flying 24,732 miles this year, which is the fourth most in the NFL. (The Jags are the only AFC team playing an international "home" game this year.)

On the other hand, the Rams won't be playing on the road very often. In 2022, they'll become the first NFL team since 1929 to play at least 10 regular-season games in their home stadium.

So how is that possible? Easy. The Rams have nine home games plus a "road" game against the Chargers. That being said, the Rams do have one of the longest trips of the year, and that will come in Week 9 when they travel 4,316 miles roundtrip for a game against Tampa Bay.

The longest flight that any team will take this year for a non-international game will come in Week 13 when the Dolphins travel 2,585 miles from Miami to San Francisco. The upside of that trip for Miami is that the NFL also gave the Dolphins a Week 14 road game against the Chargers, so they'll be able to combine the two trips. By combining those trips, the Dolphins will shave 4,538 miles off their travel total for the year.

Despite getting rid of those miles, the Dolphins still have the highest travel total for any team that's NOT playing an international game.

The team with the most unfair road trip this year is probably the Colts, who have to fly two time zones west to face the Broncos for a Thursday night game in Week 5. History has shown that NFL teams tend to struggle in that exact situation. Since the return of "Thursday Night Football" in 2006, a total of 15 teams have traveled at least two time zones west for a Thursday game and those teams have gone a combined 3-12 straight up .

With that in mind, here's a look at each team's travel miles for the upcoming season.

2022 NFL Travel Miles

1. Buccaneers: 26,562 2. Seahawks: 25,936 3. Broncos: 24,842 4. Jaguars: 24,732 5. Saints: 23,312 6. Dolphins: 20,718 7. Chargers: 20,684 8. Giants: 20,188 9. Raiders: 20,134 10. Vikings: 18,570 11. Packers: 18,050 12. Cardinals: 17,686 13. Cowboys: 16,670 14. 49ers: 16,654 15. Chiefs: 16,526 16. Jets: 16,048 17. Texans: 16,046 18. Rams: 14,837 19. Patriots: 14,373 20. Colts: 14,128 21. Panthers: 14,026 22. Commanders: 13,324 23. Eagles: 13,240 24. Bills: 12,644 25. Titans: 12,286 26. Falcons: 10,190 27. Bengals: 9,428 28. Bears: 8,932 29. Browns: 8,628 30. Lions: 8,296 31. Ravens: 8,244 32. Steelers: 6,512

Note:  There are multiple teams this year that are expected to combine two road trips into one, and that's been taken into account. For instance, the Patriots will likely be staying out west in December thanks to the fact that they play at the Cardinals in Week 14 and at the Raiders in Week 15.

There are five other teams that will likely see their travel miles cut due to their ability to combine a two-game road swing into one trip this year. Here's a list of those teams: Falcons (at Rams, at Seahawks), Seahawks (at Lions, at Saints), 49ers (at Panthers, at Falcons), Rams (at Saints, at Chiefs), Dolphins (at 49ers, at Chargers).

If the Seahawks DON'T combine their two-game eastern swing into one trip, then they'll end up with 29,014 miles this year, which would be the most in the NFL. If they do combine the trips, it will shave 3,078 miles off their season total, leaving the Buccaneers at the top of the mileage list.

Note II: The mileage chart also assumes that the Saints will leave from Charlotte in Week 3 and head directly to London for their Week 4 game against the Vikings. The Saints have played in London on two prior occasions (2008, 2017) and in both instances, they actually left from Charlotte because they played the Panthers the week before their trip to England.

Here’s How Much Each NFL Team Will Travel In 2023 Ahead Of Full Schedule Release

NFL footballs

Seven NFL teams this season will travel more miles than it takes to go around the world

According to Google, the distance around Earth at the equator is 24,901 miles. Those teams set to travel “around the world” and more this upcoming 2023 season are the Seattle Seahawks , San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins , LA Rams, LA Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, and Arizona Cardinals.

The Seahawks will lead the NFL with 31,600 miles of travel during the upcoming regular season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will travel across an ocean to an entirely different country twice this year and they still do not come close to the mileage of the Seahawks’ travel time.

The team heading overseas with the most miles will be the defending Super Bowl champions, Kansas City Chiefs. They will head to Frankfurt, Germany in Week 9 to take on the Miami Dolphins.

On the other hand, teams in the middle of the country won’t have to travel as far. When it comes to the team that has the least amount of miles, that would be the Cincinnati Bengals at 11,942 miles.

Background:.

Injury incidence is higher in the National Football League (NFL) than in other collision sports. Although previous research has identified that scheduling variations, including overseas games and bye week timing, does not affect concussion risk, data are currently lacking regarding the effects of scheduling variation on season-long musculoskeletal injury incidence.

To determine whether higher cumulative travel distance, overseas play, an early season bye week, and an expansion of the regular season is associated with higher injury rates in the NFL.

Study Design:

Descriptive epidemiology study.

All 1275 injuries across 5 NFL seasons from 2017 to 2018 through 2021 to 2022 were reviewed retrospectively. Injury data and travel distances were extracted from publicly available sources, which were cross-referenced for validation. Injury rates were calculated per 1000 athletic-exposures (AEs). Cumulative team travel distances were compared statistically using a linear regression. Single factor analysis of variance was used to compare categorical variables.

Travel distance did not significantly predict injury rates ( P = .47), and there was no difference in injury rates between teams that played a game overseas versus teams that did not (19.3 injuries per 1000 AEs for both; P = .96). In addition, no difference was found in injury rates ( F [109,2100[ = 0.704; P = .73) or players placed on the injured reserve list ( F [99,778] = 1.70; P = .077) between various bye weeks ( P = .73). Injury rates did not differ between the new 17-game regular season (18.4 per 1000 AEs) versus the previous four 16-game regular seasons (19.7 per 1000 AEs; P = .12). However, teams that did not qualify for the playoffs had a significantly higher injury rate (19.9 per 1000 AEs) as well as players on injured reserve (8.0 per 1000 AEs) than playoff-qualifying teams (18.4 and 6.8 per 1000 AEs, respectively; P < .05 for both).

Conclusion:

Over 5 NFL seasons, cumulative travel distance, overseas play, bye week timing, and adding 1 regular season game were not associated with increased injury rates in NFL players. However, a lack of regular season success was associated with higher injury rates and more players on injured reserve.

The National Football League (NFL) is the among the most popular professional sport leagues in the United States. Injury incidence is higher in the NFL than in other team-based collision-heavy sports, including ice hockey and rugby. 20 Injuries to the lower extremity, including the knee, ankle, and hamstring, are the most common, followed by shoulder injuries and concussions. 3 , 20 From 2015 to 2018, a mean of 41% of NFL players had a time-loss injury to the lower extremity. 3 , 20 , 21 Defensive backs consistently have the highest number of all-cause injuries, time-loss injuries to the lower extremity, and in-game injuries among all positions. 3 , 21 Although technological advances and rule changes have been implemented over the past several years to curtail injury risk, 3 , 14 considerable concern remains regarding player safety.

There have been numerous investigations into the risk factors that contribute to the multifaceted etiology of NFL injuries. For example, significant ankle sprains, eversion ankle sprains of all severities, and anterior cruciate ligament sprains have been shown to occur more often in games played on artificial turf as opposed to natural grass, although 1 study found that there is a slightly greater risk of shoulder injuries on natural grass. 16 , 19 , 22 , 23 Evidence regarding temperature and injuries is mixed, with conflicting evidence regarding lower extremity injuries and 1 study reporting that colder temperatures may decrease concussion risk. 19 , 23 It has also been shown that more injuries occur on passing plays overall, though running backs and linemen are more likely to become injured on rushing plays. 11 Although it could be postulated that teams that must play on a shortened week for Thursday Night Football games (as opposed to the typical Sunday NFL games) may have increased injury incidence, 2 studies have shown that the number of days off between games is not associated with increased injury risk, with 1 of the studies demonstrating that the televised Thursday night games have fewer injuries than their weekend counterparts. 19 , 24

Regarding travel, 1 study found that defensive and offensive linemen who played in the Central time zone were placed on injured reserve more often than those from the Pacific time zone. 7 In contrast, although investigating the effect of a single trip rather than cumulative distance over the course of a season, studies in football and rugby found no association between relative distance traveled to games and injury risk in that game. 13 , 19 No association has been found between time of season, game outcome, altitude, or division opponents and injury risk. 19

Although some potential injury-promoting factors remain unknown in advance of competition, the scheduling characteristics of bye week timing, cumulative travel distance, and overseas games are known before the start of each season. It has been shown that unconventional schedules do not have an impact on concussion rates in the NFL. 28 However, there has not yet been a comprehensive analysis of the effect of scheduling factors on season-long musculoskeletal injury rates. This knowledge would be useful to NFL scheduling administrators, who could lead targeted scheduling initiatives to minimize the potential impact on player safety, and to team athletic trainers and physicians, who would be better prepared to assess athlete injury risk. Most importantly, this information would equip players to identify their own individual risk and initiate precaution to minimize potential harm. Players themselves have expressed their concern about injury risk. For example, the addition of a 17th regular season game to the schedule was a major player objection to the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement. 14

The present study addresses this gap in the literature by analyzing how scheduling factors may affect injury rates across 5 NFL seasons. The aim of the current study was to determine the relationship between scheduling factors and injury rates among professional athletes in the NFL. Based on the results of previous studies among other professional sports, 5 , 27 we hypothesized that higher cumulative travel distance, playing overseas games, having a bye week earlier in the season, and an expansion of the regular season would be associated with higher injury rates.

Injury surveillance

This study was a descriptive epidemiological study that retrospectively reviewed injuries in the 32 teams of the NFL across 5 seasons, from the 2017 to 2018 season through the 2021 to 2022 season. The study analyzed publicly available information and did not require institutional review board approval. Injury data extraction methods conformed to methods outlined in previous studies on the epidemiology of NFL injuries. 1 Injury data was extracted from a publicly available injury report (Pro-Football Reference, https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/injuries.htm ) and was cross-referenced with other publicly available sources (NFL, https://www.nfl.com/injuries and ESPN, https://www.espn.com/nfl/injuries ). These methods are in line with previously published protocols. 1 , 2 The extracted data included player and team involved, week of the injury, playing status, games missed, and injured reserve status. This study only included sports-related musculoskeletal injuries that resulted in ≥1 missed games. Non–sports related medical issues, concussions, missed games due to personal reasons, and illnesses were excluded from the analysis. COVID-19 infections, and time lost due to COVID-19 infection, were also excluded from the analysis. Due to indistinguishable timing of injuries that occurred before the first regular season game, injuries and injured reserve placements that occurred before week 1 were excluded from the study.

Cumulative Travel Distance

Cumulative travel distance was defined as the total number of miles traveled in a given season from the team’s regular home stadium, which included playoff games. Distance was measured from the team’s regular home stadium and the stadium in which the game was played, analogous to the methodology used by Lawrence et al. 19 Games assigned a distance of zero included home games, road games against teams who share a stadium (ie, the 2019 New York Giants away game against the New York Jets), and the rare occasion of a team playing Super Bowl in its home stadium (the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2021 Los Angeles Rams). For neutral site games (including the Super Bowl and games played at London’s Wembley Stadium, Twickenham Stadium, and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as well as Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca), travel distance was factored in for both sides. Likewise, the 2021 New Orleans Saints hosted their week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers in Jacksonville due to Hurricane Ida’s impact on New Orleans, 4 and the team's travel distance to Jacksonville’s TIAA Bank Field was included. The 2020 San Francisco 49ers hosted 3 games in Arizona’s State Farm Stadium due to local restrictions put in place during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and in advance of their week 13 home game against the Buffalo Bills, it was announced that the 49ers would stay, practice, and play in Arizona for the remainder of the season. 8 Therefore, beginning with week 13, Arizona’s State Farm Stadium was considered the team’s “home stadium.” Thus, their 3 home games and a “road” game against the Cardinals afterward were assigned a distance of zero. Concurrently, distance traveled for their week 15 away game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas was calculated from State Farm Stadium in Arizona, rather than from Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco.

Statistical Analysis

In accordance with previous studies that analyzed injury rates in professional athletes, injury incidence was normalized per 1000 athlete-exposures (AEs), with 1 AE equal to 1 game per athlete. 1 , 25 AEs were calculated for each individual team per year as total injuries × 1000/AEs (53-player in-season roster size × number of games played). Data analysis was conducted using Microsoft Office Excel. Cumulative team travel distances were compared statistically using a linear regression. Single factor analysis of variance was used to compare categorical variables, with statistical significance set at P ≤ .05.

There were 1275 regular and postseason games in the 5 NFL seasons between 2017 to 2018 and 2021 to 2022. Over the 5 seasons, 4378 injuries were reported, for a mean of 34.42 (30.58-39.26) injuries per 1000 AEs per year.

Cumulative team travel distance did not significantly predict the number of injuries per 1000 AEs (β = -6.1 × 10 -5 ; P = .47) ( Figure 1 ). Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference in injury rates between NFL teams that did (19.3 injuries per 1000 AEs) versus did not (19.3 injuries per 1000 AEs) play a game overseas in their season ( F [1,158] = [0.00242]; P = .96) ( Figure 2 ).

In addition, there was no statistically significant difference in injuries per 1000 AEs between weeks that NFL teams had their bye week during the season ( F [109,2100] = [0.704]; P = .73) ( Figure 3A ). Also, there was no statistically significant difference in the number of players on injured reserve per 1000 AEs between weeks that NFL teams had their bye week ( F [99,778] = [1.70]; P = .077) ( Figure 3B ).

There was also a statistically significant difference in the number of players on injured reserve per 1000 AEs between NFL teams that did (6.8 players on injured reserve per 1000 AEs) versus did not (8.0 players on injured reserve per 1000 AEs) make the playoffs ( F [56,820] = [10.8]; P < .05) ( Figure 4B ). NFL teams that did not make the playoffs had higher mean number of injuries for every week, except the final week of the season ( Figure 4C ).

The 2021 season with the new 17-game regular season had a total of 984 injuries, compared with a mean of 940 total injuries during the previous four 16-game regular seasons (2017-2020) ( Figure 5 ). Subsequently, there was no statistically significant difference in injury rates between the new 2021 season (18.4 injuries per 1000 AEs) versus the previous 4 seasons (19.7 injuries per 1000 AEs), 2017 to 2020 ( F [39,2177] = [2.45]; P = .12). In addition, there was no statistically significant difference in injury rates between the 5 seasons ( Figure 5 ).

Injuries per 1000 athletic exposures (AEs) between 5 National Football League seasons.

This study is the first to analyze the effects of various NFL scheduling factors on player safety with respect to musculoskeletal injury. Results suggest that cumulative travel distance ( P = .47), playing a game overseas (19.3 vs 19.3 per 1000 AEs; P = .96), having a bye week earlier in the regular season ( P = .73), and having a 17-game regular season (18.4 vs 19.7 per 1000 AEs; P = .12) were not associated with increased injury rates. By contrast, missing the playoffs was associated with an increase in injury rate (19.9 vs 18.4 per 1000 AEs; P < .05). The analysis suggests that the NFL schedule over the past 5 seasons was not a risk factor for increased musculoskeletal injuries. However, the results do suggest that not qualifying for postseason play was associated with higher injury rates.

There are currently over 1700 players in the NFL, with each of the league’s 32 teams being allotted a 53-player active roster and a practice squad of up to 16 players. In addition, lists such as injured reserve, the Physically Unable to Perform list, and the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt List comprise players under contract with NFL teams who do not count against these numbers. 17 Although the exact length has not been officially supported by the NFL, it has been reported that the mean length of players’ careers to be as short as 3 years. 15 Furthermore, multiple studies have demonstrated that musculoskeletal injury can be associated with shortening a player’s career. 6 , 9 , 10 , 18 , 26 For those able to play in the league longer, Domb et al 12 showed that their longer careers are associated with increased postcareer whole-person impairment via analysis of symptomatic joints. There is also a financial cost to sustaining an injury as an NFL player, as 1 study found that players with ACL injuries earned over 2 million dollars less in the ensuing 4 years than salary-matched controls. In addition, these injuries disproportionately affect career length for players with lower salaries. 26

Given the impact that injury can have on a player’s safety, livelihood, and postcareer quality of life, team physicians, athletic trainers, and athletes must be aware of any potential factors, including those inherent in a team’s schedule, that may put players at further risk of injury. This knowledge of injury risk factors is essential for prophylactic care. For free agents, awareness of such risks would likely be a significant factor in their selection of employer. The initial hypothesis of this study was that analyzed scheduling parameters were modifiable risk factors that have a significant effect on professional football players’ health-safety, as measured by incidence of musculoskeletal injuries.

Scheduling Parameters

Across the 5 NFL seasons between 2017 to 2018 and 2021 to 2022, there was no association between cumulative team travel distance and injury rates ( Figure 1 ). Playing a game overseas during a season was not associated with an increase in injury rate ( Figure 2 ). There was no significant difference in injury rates or number of players on injured reserve between the NFL bye weeks ( Figure 3A,B ). In addition, although only 1 season of data is currently available to measure the impact of the addition of a regular season game, initial analysis suggests the move from a 16- to a 17-game season did not increase injury rates ( Figure 5 ).

These results do not support the initial hypothesis and suggest that the scheduling parameters analyzed are not risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries in the NFL. The results of this study echo findings from Teramoto et al 28 who found that scheduling considerations, including overseas games and bye week timing, did not increase the risk of concussions in the NFL. However, they do not align with studies of the National Hockey League (NHL) and National Basketball Association (NBA), which found an increased risk of injury with schedule condensation and away games on consecutive days, respectively. 5 , 27 This underscores the unique nature of the NFL schedule among American team sports, in which teams invariably play 1 game per week, half of which are at home, and therefore travel a maximum of once per week for half of the season. In contrast, an NBA or NHL team may play on consecutive days and multiple times per week in different cities. Previous research has shown that Thursday Night Football games, which are the NFL’s version of schedule condensation, are not associated with increased risk of injury, 19 , 24 , 28 and, although an early or late bye week is also a potential “schedule condenser” in the NFL, our results show that the timing of a team’s bye week does not have an impact on its incidence of musculoskeletal injuries or number of players put on injured reserve due to musculoskeletal injury.

Playoff Qualification

Not qualifying for the NFL postseason play was associated with both an increased injury rate and an increased number of players on injured reserve. However, no causative conclusions can directly be drawn from this analysis. It is possible that a decreased number of injuries may lead to improved team performance and subsequent playoff qualification. However, it is also possible that injury rates on successful teams may be underreported. On a successful team, each game holds high significance. Players on these teams may avoid missing critical games by playing through injury or underreporting injuries to avoid missing critical game time. In contrast, there is less incentive on unsuccessful teams for players to return to play and leave injured reserve, and teams that have been eliminated mathematically from postseason contention may be more likely to place players on injured reserve in the latter stages of the season. The current study’s results do highlight that a team’s competitive success is an important factor to consider when analyzing the epidemiology of sports injuries. Sports epidemiology studies that fail to control for team records may be misreporting the effect size of their measured parameters. Future investigation is necessary to elucidate the effect of team competitive success on reported injuries and player injured reserve status.

Limitations

Similar to other sports epidemiology publications that rely upon publicly available data, there are several limitations to the current study. The accuracy and precision of data collection methods for the database are not able to be verified, and potential omission of data may confound the study’s results. The data also lacked specific details about injury diagnoses, as factors such as severity and medical clearance were not available. Thus, the current study addresses only factors that affect time-loss musculoskeletal injuries of ≥1 game. It is possible that the measured parameters could be risk factors for more insidious injuries that do not remove an athlete from play. Furthermore, only musculoskeletal injuries were assessed; the study did not include all causes of time-loss injuries, as non–sports related medical issues, illnesses, and concussions were excluded from the analysis. A primary data source with direct medical information about injuries would alleviate these limitations. However, without direct collaboration with the NFL to access the players’ personal health information, the study’s well-established protocol represents the best available method for analyzing the epidemiology of professional football injuries. In addition, at the time of the conduction of the analysis, only 1 17-game season had been completed. Additional years of surveillance would aid in drawing stronger conclusions about whether the additional regular season game has implications for NFL injury rates. However, insights from the initial analysis of the schedule change are still beneficial to the athletes that will continue to play with the new schedule as more data are collected. Finally, the study’s sample size of 32 NFL teams over 5 seasons, for a total of 1275 regular and postseason games, helps minimize bias in this retrospective data analysis.

Over 5 NFL seasons, cumulative travel distance, overseas play, bye week timing, and adding 1 regular season game were not associated with increased injury rates in NFL players. However, a lack of regular season success was associated with higher injury rates and more players on injured reserve. Overall, the analysis suggests that the analyzed parameters in the current NFL schedule were not risk factors for musculoskeletal injuries over the past 5 seasons, although lack of regular season success was associated with higher injury rates and more players on the injured reserve list.

Broncos will have 6th-fewest net travel miles in 2021 nfl season, share this article.

On paper, the 2021 NFL schedule is kind to the Denver Broncos.

Based on 2020 records, the Broncos will have the fifth-easiest strength of schedule this fall. That’s a huge improvement from last year when Denver had the 12th-hardest strength of schedule in the league.

In addition to an easier list of opponents than last year, the Broncos will also have a relatively light travel schedule. Denver will have the sixth-fewest net travel miles total this fall, according to ESPN’s Brian Burke.

Almost forgot these. More important than total travel miles: pic.twitter.com/IetnrRjMYd — Brian Burke (@bburkeESPN) May 13, 2021

Net miles account for the distances teams have to travel plus the distance their opponents have to travel to face them.

Total travel miles vs. net travel miles obviously isn’t a like-for-like comparison, but Denver’s 2020 schedule included 18,148 travel miles, the 11th-highest total in the NFL.

Of the seven NFL teams with the fewest travel miles last season, only the Cincinnati Bengals (7,516 miles) did not make the playoffs (and quarterback Joe Burrow missed six games with an injury last fall).

Having a low net travel total certainly doesn’t guarantee anything for the Broncos, but it will make the team’s schedule a little easier.

Ranking all 32 nfl teams (including the vikings) by distance they will travel in 2024, share this article.

Wednesday night the NFL will release the full 2024 regular-season schedule. For many teams, this means lots of cross-country and even out-of-country road trips and for others, they get to stay close to home.

The Minnesota Vikings’ location in the middle of the country allows them to be one of the teams that does a good amount of travel but not an egregious amount typically. The 2024 schedule matches up with that, but other teams have it much worse. Here is how every NFL team fared when it comes to travel this year.
