Police will search waterways as they continue looking for the Belgian tourist Celine Cremer, who has been missing for two weeks in remote Tasmanian wilderness.

Officers say they will examine the Philosopher Falls area more closely on Tuesday before scaling back the search.

“Tomorrow we will utilise more resources to conduct swift water searching in the area,” Insp Anthea Maingay said on Monday.

“Specially trained police search and rescue personnel will be searching in the waterways utilising a range of methods and equipment. We’re doing this in a bid to find some answers for Celine’s family before we begin to scale back the search.”

Last week police received expert medical advice indicating Cremer could not have survived the freezing weather conditions.

The 31-year-old was reported missing a week ago after she was last seen on 17 June in the nearby town of Waratah. Her SUV was found at the falls walking track car park on Tuesday.

Police say the last signal from Cremer’s phone was on 20 June in the Philosopher Falls area.

The owner of the Bischoff Hotel in Waratah said the backpacker had been seen at the nearby roadhouse before she disappeared.

“The only contact she made with the town was when she passed through the roadhouse – she stopped there,” Andrew, who gave his first name only, told Guardian Australia.

Community members had offered to help with the search and everyone was hoping for good news. “It’s devastating, it’s terrible, we hope she is found,” Andrew said.

A hiker who was at the falls walking track about 2.30pm on 18 June contacted police at the weekend after authorities asked for a call.

“The hiker is not in any trouble but is helping assist police in establishing Ms Cremer’s movements prior to her going missing,” police said on Saturday.

The search has previously involved police and State Emergency Service resources including ground crews, drones and helicopters, specialist search and rescue rappelling and all-terrain vehicles.

“Our thoughts continue to be with Celine’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” Maingay said on Monday.

The Philosopher Falls track remains closed to the public.

Tasmania Police continue desperate search for Belgium tourist Celine Cremer as SES focus efforts near Philosopher Falls

Hopes are fading for missing Belgium woman Celine Cremer as police prompt fears conditions are not "survivable" in the Tasmanian wilderness.

One person dead after heavy flooding in Japan

Tasmania Police are continuing to search for a missing Belgium woman who vanished in the state's north west more than two weeks ago.

Celine Cremer, 31, had been travelling around Tasmania as part of her trip to Australia and had plans to visit Victoria on June 21.

Ms Cremer - who has not been in contact with family and friends since June 12 - was last seen on June 17 before Tasmania Police reported her missing on June 26.

SES Tasmania have focused their efforts around the Philosopher Falls Track area at Warata, where her white Honda vehicle was found "unattended" in a nearby car park on June 27.

On Sunday afternoon, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was utilised to search for Ms Cremer near Philosopher Falls.

"A break in the challenging weather conditions means that the helicopter can be safely utilised as part of the search," police said.

However, fears are growing for Ms Cremer's welfare as temperatures in the Tasmanian wilderness remain extremely cold and challenging.

Inspector Anthea Maingay on Friday said medical experts had indicated weather conditions were not "survivable" in the current climate.

“We’re continuing our efforts to locate Celine, but as we explained yesterday we have received expert medical advice that indicates the recent weather conditions were not survivable for the length of time that Celine is thought to have been exposed in the wilderness," she wrote.

Tasmanian SES used all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s) to search a number of tracks around Philosopher Falls over the weekend but there is still no sign of Ms Cremer.

Police have spoken to a hiker who was at Philosopher Falls at about 2:30 pm on June 18 to help assist officers in establishing her last movements.

"Our thoughts continue to be with Ms Cremer’s family and loved ones at this difficult time," police said.

"The Philosopher Falls walking track at Waratah remains closed to the public."

Family and friends of Ms Cremer are desperately trying to track down the Belgium woman from the other side of the world, with her sister Amelia posting to Facebook last week.

"We no longer have sign of life of my sister Cé Crmr Wber as of June 16, 2023. Breaking news, she was on a road trip to Tasmania before joining Melbourne via Ferry on June 21, 2023 aboard her vehicle (a white Honda CRV registered 'E40TF')," Amelia wrote.

"If you have any information on my sister, please contact me directly or my mom Ariane Cremer.

"Please share this post widely and help us find her."

missing belgium tourist in tasmania

Tasmania Police say they have received ‘expert medical advice’ that indicates the conditions in the area they believe missing Belgian tourist Celine Cremer is located are “not survivable”.

“Weather conditions have been challenging over the past few days, with freezing temperatures, snow and rain occurring,” police say.

“At this stage police believe Celine’s car has been in the carpark since at least 20 June, and our information indicates she was only equipped for a light day walk.”

The search effort in Waratah on Tasmania’s North-West coast is continuing, but Police say they are are dealing with “extremely dense bushland” and the challenging weather conditions are expected to worsen over the coming days.

“We remain in close contact with Celine’s family, and our thoughts continue to be with them,” said Tasmania Police Inspector Anthea Maingay.

Waratah’s Philosopher Falls walking track remains closed to the public while police conduct searches in the area, assisted by Tasmania SES.

Serious concerns are held for the welfare of a Belgian tourist who was last seen in a remote northwestern Tasmanian town nearly two weeks ago.

Celine Cremer was reported missing on Monday, with Tasmanian Police finding her Honda CRV unattended in the car park of Philosopher Falls Trail on Tuesday.

Belgian tourist Celine Cremer was last seen on June 17 in Waratah, Tasmania.

She was last seen on June 17 in the nearby town of Waratah, about 205km west of Launceston, where weather conditions have been chilly, with rain and even light snow falling in the days since.

The young woman shared an image of her travels in Tasmania just months before going missing.

“A little devil in Tasmania,” she posted on Facebook on February 22 alongside a photo looking down on Hobart in Tasmania.

Ms Cremer also shared how much she was loving her travels in Australia.

“Australia is indeed so beautiful! And so big,” she wrote to a friend under the post.

“So little travelled in just a few months. I do, however, have a love for this magnificent island, precisely in the shape of a heart, in the south of the country...I currently live and work on the east coast, in a remote area bordered by a superb national park with various beaches, including one with white sand.”

"A little devil in Tasmania," she captioned the photo in French.

Another loved one also commented on the photo saying that the young woman was welcome in their Texas home.

“Stop it, you gonna make me cry,” she replied.

Tasmania Police announced that they will keep searching on Wednesday, with ground search crews and a police drone currently at the scene and a helicopter to be used in the afternoon “if weather conditions allow”.

“To assist in the ongoing search, the Philosopher Falls walking track has been temporarily closed to the public while police conduct both land and air searches in the area,” Tasmania Police said on Facebook.

Celine was reported missing on Monday, with her Honda CRV found parked at the Philosopher Falls Trail, near Waratah, on Tuesday.

It’s understood Ms Cremer had been in Tasmania for some time.

“We no longer have sign of life of my sister Cé Crmr Wber as of June 16,” writes Celine’s sister Amélie on her own Facebook page.

Another post of Amélie’s indicates Celine’s mobile phone was connected to an internet network up until June 20.

The sister of missing Belgian tourist Celine Cremer has posted on social media, asking for help to find her after her car was located on Tuesday afternoon in Tasmania's remote north-west.

Police received a "concern for welfare" report for the 31-year-old on Monday.

They say she was last seen in the town of Waratah on June 17.

A white four wheel drive parked on a gravel road surrounded by rainforest.

Inspector Steve Jones said Ms Cremer's car had been found unattended in a car park at the Philosopher Falls Track near Waratah yesterday.

"We believe it's been there at least a couple of days, and we're seeking members of the public's assistance to help us ascertain if it's been there any longer," he said.

Searchers resumed scouring the area at first light on Wednesday.

Weather conditions are poor, with light snowfall.

"This morning we have search and rescue members abseiling down some steep areas where we can't actually access through walking," Inspector Jones said.

"We've also got the Westpac rescue helicopter on the way, as well as having a drone in the area as well to try and see if we can locate her.

"It's always our goal to find someone alive, safe, and well. It's obviously a concern given the amount of time she has been missing or hasn't reported into her family."

Ms Cremer's family says she has not been in contact with them since June 16.

"If you have any information on my sister, please contact me directly or my mom Ariane Cremer."

"Please share this post widely and help us find her."

Amelie Cremer also shared a message of hope.

"Thank you everyone for your tokens of support, messages and shares," she posted.

"We are all keeping hope alive, we are putting things into place, keep sharing and talking about it around you. Thanks again so much!"

Police have urged anyone who has been in the Philosopher Falls car park since June 17 to call them.

The falls are about 10 kilometres from the town of Waratah, and the track walk takes about 45 minutes.

The falls are set in thick rainforest and the track is described as easily accessible.

Daytime temperatures in the area have been about 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, and about 1C to 2C at night.
