Hello, I’m Agata, a dentist by day and a daydreamer by night.

9 of the best places in the world to see bioluminescence

The natural world is full of wonders, but is there anything more mesmerizing than swimming at night in a sea glowing with bioluminescence? Or spying on flickering fireflies in woodland as they dance through the air? 

Bioluminescence is when living organisms – animals, plants and fungi – produce and emit light, and Mother Nature adds this touch of whimsy to the environment in many different forms and in many different places. You just have to know where to look.

You could be closer to some of these sparklers than you realize. Here are our favorite places to go for the glow.

1. San Juan Island, Washington, USA

The still waters of Garrison and Westcott Bays, just off San Juan Island , are the setting for a spectacular light show in Washington State . These nutrient-rich bodies of water create an environment that fosters bioluminescent microorganisms – a natural attraction that travelers flock to once the sun has set. 

San Juan Island Outfitters offers tours timed with the new moon in summer for peak visibility. 

Post-glow activities: Grab a pint at San Juan Brewing Company . The next day, check out the wildlife and the lighthouse in nearby Lime Kiln Point State Park .

2. Koh Rong, Cambodia

When most people think of Cambodia , Angkor Wat springs to mind. In the southern part of the country near Sihanoukville is another epic experience: Koh Rong , an island where you can snorkel in sparkling bioluminescent waters. Book a boat tour that will take you out on the water, and be sure to swirl your hand through the water to see the plankton at their brightest.

Stay at Long Set Resort , which gives guests a shoreline view of the twinkling colors lighting up the sea. 

Post-glow activities: Mountain bike through the forest or take an ocean dive to view marine wildlife.

3. Manialtepec Lagoon, Mexico

In Mexico , Oaxaca’s Manialtepec Lagoon is known for its bioluminescent light show. While you can stay in the boat, jumping in is encouraged. In ancient times, the locals believed in the youthful magic of bathing in the phosphorescent lagoon. Just be sure to time your nighttime dip with the new moon, as light makes it challenging to see the bioluminescence.

Stay in Puerto Escondido and book a tour from there — they are offered most nights. The lagoon is less than 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido.

Post-glow activities: Bird-watching is a must in Manialtepec Lagoon. Parrots, pelicans, falcons, ospreys, herons, kingfishers and hawks call the area home.

4. Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

One of the most iconic examples of bioluminescence, the otherworldly glowworms of New Zealand ’s Waitomo Caves make even the most experienced naturalists stop in their tracks. In a striking display, the worms dangle from stalactites reaching down from the caves’ ceiling, blanketing the surface in a bright blue glow.

Visitors can book a number of tours, including the main Glowworm Cave , at the nearby visitor center .

Post-glow activities: Once you get your fill of the glittery critters, head over to the Ruakuri Caves and Bush Scenic Reserve and walk the trail loop, taking in views of the rocky gorge and limestone formations.

5. Vieques, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is home to three bioluminescent bays, the most spectacular of which is Mosquito Bay on  Vieques , a small island off the east coast. Mosquito Bay has long held the title of the brightest bioluminescent spot in the world, and for good reason – millions of single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates glow bright blue when disturbed, creating a mind-blowing spectacle for those who venture out on the water via kayak. Watch fish jet out from under your boat like shooting stars, and elect for a glass-bottomed kayak to pretend you are in warp drive as you glide across the surface.

Note that the phenomenon is notoriously difficult to capture on camera, so just enjoy the magic instead. For the best view, book your trip on a new moon.

Post-glow activities: After soaking up the night-time magic of the bay, take advantage of the Caribbean sun – head to the mile-long golden arc of sand at Sun Bay to take in some vitamin D and admire the turquoise sea.

6. Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

You can spot fireflies in humid regions around the world. However, the Great Smoky Mountains are home to 19 different species of them, including the synchronous firefly. As one would expect given the name, these blinking bugs have a little trick up their sleeves ­– for a two-week period from late May to mid-June, they flick on and off in unison.

Evening access to this region of the park during prime firefly season is a hot ticket, and the park runs a lottery to avoid overcrowding.

Post-glow activities: Stick around the national park for another day and head south on the winding mountain roads to nearby Clingman’s Dome , the highest point in the Smoky Mountains at 6643ft (2024m). On a clear day, the peak offers views that stretch nearly 100 miles.

7.  Luminous Lagoon, Jamaica

This lagoon, which stretches along the marshlands near Falmouth, has a captivating history: during the 18th century, it was a vital port for the sugar trade between England and Jamaica . Today, the lagoon is a key location for one of the most spectacular sites in the Caribbean: microscopic organisms that glow in the shallow, warm waters.

There are a number of tours you can book in Falmouth or with hotels in Montego Bay , about 30 minutes away. The tours encourage visitors to swim in the lagoon for the best effect: The microscopic organisms produce a blue glow when disturbed.

8. Hachijō-jima, Japan

Glowing animals aren’t the only ones to shine – the bioluminescent mushrooms on Japan’s island Hachijō-jima make you feel like you are Alice in Wonderland. During the rainy season (which lasts from May to September), over seven different species light up the island’s forest floor. Hit the hiking trails or head to the botanical gardens to get a closer look at the fluorescent fungi.

Post-glow activities: Hachijō-jima is also home to two dormant volcanoes, photogenic beaches, and the top-notch Urami-ga-taki Onsen, a decadent spot with free entry that overlooks a waterfall.

9. Dismals Canyon, Alabama

Tucked away in a rural corner of Northern Alabama you’ll find Dismals Canyon, a National Natural Landmark home to the oldest accessible primeval forest east of the Mississippi River (ie a forest that has existed without any significant event, such as a fire or storm, affecting its growth). The canyon is a twisting ravine full of majestic flora and an array of wildlife, including the quirkily named Dismalites – glowworms.

These tiny worms line the moss-covered rocks of the canyon, and when night falls, they glitter blue in the darkness. The best time to catch the Dismalites is May through September, and you can book a guided tour with the canyon’s conservatory .

Post-glow activities: Spend the evening at one of the canyon’s cabins, and drive about an hour east the next morning to the Sipsey Wilderness, a section of the Bankhead National Forest that contains waterfalls, walking trails, horseback riding trails and canoeing routes. Motorized vehicles aren’t allowed within the wilderness boundaries, so sit back and enjoy nature at its purest.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The benefit of a Glow Worm in Palia is the ability to catch many rare and epic fish throughout the village. Since they're costly to purchase from Einar and require level 10 in fishing , many take to using a Glow Worm Farm to get them. These farms, however, require hard work and lots of food to get worms.

There are three main resources one can hope to get out of their Glow Worm Farm: SpeedyGro Fertilizer , HarvestBoost Fertilizer , and - of course - Glow Worms . To get the most out of the Worm Farm, discover the best foods that players can feed their worms.

Players looking to find specific fish must have large quantities of Glow Worms in their inventories. To collect as many of these worms as possible, they must fill their farms with collectibles and food. While novice players may be content with feeding their Glow Worm farms common objects like sweet leaves and crops, seasoned adventurers understand the importance of unlocking the secrets to the most coveted foods that are cherished by these luminous inhabitants. Delve into the depths of Glow Worm dietary preferences, offering insights into the optimal nourishment required to unlock the full potential of these remarkable creatures.

Yields: 1 Glow Worm

Some may write off this crop when it comes to feeding their Glow Worm Farms since it only grants one Glow Worm at a time, but the potato is highly attainable and easy to farm . Seeds can be purchased from the General Store or collected from a Seed Collector machine. Once the potatoes are planted, it only takes five days to be able to harvest them. The potatoes and surrounding plants in the garden will gain water retention abilities.

Feeding potatoes to worms also rewards players with six HarvestBoost Fertilizers (or nine if the potato is star-quality). HarvestBoost Fertilizers increase the number of crops players get upon harvest. It does, however, need to be put on the crops every day to guarantee the extra quantity.

Bouillabaisse

Yields: 1-2 glow worms.

Bouillabaisse is a rare consumable made by cooking on a stove. Players can obtain this recipe by completing the Freshwater Bundle in the Vault of Waves . It requires a Prep Station, a stove, and an oven to cook. Bouillabaisse is a good food to feed into the Glow Worm farm as it gives players one or two Glow Worms and eight to eleven HarvestBoost Fertilizers, depending on the quality of the dish.

Given the difficulty a player must go through to obtain the recipe and the myriad of ingredients, this food is not the greatest option when it comes to Glow Worm farming; however, it should not be overlooked. Those who have an abundance of Bouillabaisse can use them for Glow Worms rather than eating or selling them.

Bouillabaisse Ingredients:

- Oyster Meat

- Spice Sprout

While apples also don't provide many Glow Worms (only two per star-quality apple), it is a great, low-effort food that can be easily grown and offered to the worms in the Glow Worm Farm. Apples take 12 days to harvest the first time, and they can be harvested three more times from the same tree with six days between each harvest.

Palia: How to Cook

Apples provide eight SpeedyGro Fertilizers (or 12 fertilizers for star-quality apples). Each SpeedyGro Fertilizer will add an extra day of growth to any crop to which it is applied. This means harvest time for crops won't be as long, helping players get the crops they need sooner. Apples are a very practical option for those who desire fertilizer more than worms.

Spicy Crab Fried Rice

Yields: 2 glow worms.

To celebrate the Luna New Year, players in Palia could attend the Maji Market event in February. Complete quests, participate in games and purchase limited-time items from the villagers. Reth sells a recipe for Spicy Crab Fried Rice, a food that will give players two Glow Worms if fed to the Glow Worm farm.

This dish requires ten ingredients, a prep station, and a stove. The quality of the fish depends on how well players perform cooking actions like flipping, chopping, and stirring. In addition to the Glow Worms, the Spicy Crab Fried Rice will give players 10 HarvestBoost Fertilizers. If they manage to craft star-quality Spicy Crab Fried Rice, they will get an extra four HarvestBoost Fertilizers.

Spicy Crab Fried Rice Ingredients:

- Cooking Oil

- Soy Sauce

- Wild Garlic

- Spicy Pepper

- Napa Cabbage

- Wild Green Onion

Chapaa Masala

After reaching cooking level eight, players can purchase the recipe for Chapaa Masala for 2,500 Gold. This recipe requires a mixing station, a prep station, and an oven. Hunt down some chapaa for this recipe - many can be found at the best hunting locations in the game . Chapaa Masala is required to complete the Sear-Chef Bundle in the Vault of the Flames.

Regardless of the quality, players will receive two Glow Worms in exchange for Chapaa Masala. Like the Spicy Crab Fried Rice, 10 HarvestBoost Fertilizers come with this dish. Star-quality Chapaa Masala will get players an extra three fertilizers, but if they are searching for more Glow Worms, there are plenty of other options.

Chapaa Masala Ingredients:

- Chapaa Meat

- 2 Spice Sprouts

- Dari Clove

- Heat Root

Yields: 2-3 Glow Worms

Just like humans, worms enjoy a tasty apple pie. The apple pie recipe is a family specialty and can only be found inside Delaila's room. Players must reach level three friendship with her to gain access to her room. Once obtained, an apple pie can be crafted using a Prep Station, a Mixing Station, and a Standard Oven.

Palia: How To Find Zeki's Underground Black Market

Feeding apple pies to the Glow Worm Farm can give players two to three Glow Worms and 12-17 SpeedyGro Fertilizers, depending on the quality of the pie. Given that it takes some time to build friendships and complete the necessary tasks to earn this recipe, many players look to other means of farming Glow Worms.

Apple Pie Ingredients:

- Sweet Leaf

If anyone hasn't guessed it by now, Glow Worms love apples! Players who reach level eight in the gardening skill can purchase a recipe for a Preserve Jar crafter from Badruu. Once built and placed on the home lot, players can refine fruits like apples and blueberries. Refine apples in the Preserve Jar to obtain apple jam, a food enjoyed by most Glow Worms. Apple jams can also be received as rewards for completing discovery quests from villagers , especially Delaila and Auni.

Normal apple jams give two Glow Worms while star-quality apple jams give three. In addition, this consumable also yields 12 (or 16 if star-quality) SpeedyGro Fertilizers. Players can swap apple jam for blueberry jam if they so choose, but it does not offer as many fertilizers.

Poke Bowls are a simple recipe that provides a large amount of resources in return; however, this was an exclusive recipe only available through the Just Desserts Stamp Card in the Maji Market. The good news is, there is a chance the Maji Market will return in the future.

Cook Poke Bowls at the prep and mixing stations. Some of the ingredients can be easily obtained if players arrange their gardens in a specific layout . Regular Poke Bowls grant two Glow Worms and 13 HarvestBoost Fertilizers while star-quality Poke Bowls give three Glow Worms and 19 HarvestBoost Fertilizers.

Poke Bowl Ingredients:

- Dari Cloves

- Spice Sprouts

In order to obtain the recipe for Sushi, players must use Glow Worms and go fishing in ponds in Bahari Bay . Although players need Glow Worms to receive this recipe, it is still a great food to put in a Glow Worm farm. Sushi will give players two Glow Worms and 11 HarvestBoost Fertilizers for normal quality or three Glow Worms and 16 HarvestBoost Fertilizers for star-quality Sushi.

Palia: How To Play With Friends

This recipe requires a prep station, an oven, and a stove to cook in terms of cooking stations. Unlike many other kinds of food, the recipe for sushi doesn't require as many ingredients. As long as these ingredients are plentiful, Sushi could be a good option for farming Glow Worms.

Sushi Ingredients:

Oysters Akwinduu

Yields: 2-4 glow worms.

Oysters Akwinduu is a rare consumable that is part of the Your Order Is Served quest. It requires a high cooking skill and a prep station, a mixing station, and an oven on their home lot. Certain ingredients and items can be requested from other players on the server. After it has been cooked, feed it to the Glow Worm farm and wait for them to finish munching to collect the Glow Worms.

Normal Oysters Akwinduu gives players two Glow Worms and 14 HarvestBoost Fertilizers. Star-quality Glow Worms can give as many as four Glow Worms and 20 HarvestBoost Fertilizers.

Oysters Akwinduu Ingredients:

- Any Red Meat

Celebration Cake

Yields: 3-4 glow worms.

Celebration Cakes are hard to come by and require a lot of resources to make, but players can receive three to five Glow Worms and 17-28 SpeedyGro Fertilizers, depending on the quality of the cake offered. These cakes are worth a lot of gold and are adored by the villagers. They are also great food for gaining focus points . To make a Celebration Cake, players must have a prep station, an oven, and a mixing station.

When ingredients and cooking skills are in high supply, this is a worthy option. For those less prepared for making more complex foods, there are better options that require fewer cooking stations and ingredients.

Celebration Cake Ingredients:

- Blueberry

- 4 Butters

- 4 Sweet Leaves

Lucky Braised Fish

Yields: 3-5 glow worms.

During the Luna New Year event, players had the opportunity to snag the Lucky Braised Fish recipe from Reth's Street Specialties. It is one of the best things to feed into the Glow Worm farm. Regular quality Lucky Braised Fish can give as many as three Glow Worms and 18 HarvestBoost Fertilizers. If players are lucky and get their hands on star-quality Lucky Braised Fish dishes, they can get five Glow Worms and 26 HarvestBoost Fertilizers.

Cook this recipe using a prep station, a mixing station, and a stove. It requires 26 items as ingredients. Although many other recipes and crops require less time and ingredients, this dish yields a lot of Glow Worms.

Lucky Braised Fish Ingredients:

- 5 Cooking Oils

- 5 Wild Green Onions

- 4 Soy Sauces

- 4 Spice Sprouts

- 2 Wild Ginger

Muujin Bahari

Yields: 4-6 glow worms.

The best food players can cook to feed Glow Worms is Muujin Bahari. Normal quality Muujin Bahari can give players four Glow Worms and 21 HarvestBoost fertilizers. Star-quality Muujin Bahari gives the most Glow Worms at a whopping total of six and 31 HarvestBoost fertilizers.

This recipe can be obtained by the Your Order Is Served quest. It is required to complete the quest and also the Fruits of the Earth Bundle in the Vault of the Roots . Unfortunately, this recipe is one of the most demanding and difficult items to cook in Palia . It requires all four cooking stations. Players should try their hardest to collect the following ingredients and cook as many Muujin Bahari dishes as they can for their Glow Worm collection.

Muujin Bahari Ingredients:

- 3 Muujin Meat

- 3 Plant Fiber

- 3 Cooking Oil

- Any Mushroom
