Also, remember the optimum temperature range of storing batteries (between 59F to 68F), because the more it strays from that range, the higher the change of your battery degrading. Keep it away from humid or damp areas, because it can be very dangerous if moisture seeps into your battery pack.

The most common battery technologies on the market are lithium-ion (Li-ion) and lead-acid batteries.

Lead-acid – This technology used to be found in cheap electric bikes in the past, but now you rarely come across it in the e-bike world. These are inexpensive to produce because lead is a very abundant metal. However, they rapidly deteriorate, meaning they have short lifespans. In addition, they are much heavier than Li-ion and require intensive care to extend their lifespan.

Li-ion – Almost all bike manufacturers nowadays use lithium eBike battery technology. Lithium is less abundant and harder to process and refine, making these batteries significantly more expensive.

Li-ion batteries hold far more power, last longer, charge faster, and require minor care to prolong their lifespan.

E-Bike Battery Capacity: Understanding Volts, Watt-Hours, & Amp-Hours

Volts measure the force of the electric flow from the battery to the motor. The more volts a battery has, the more power it provides to the motor. Most e-bike manufacturers use a 36V, 48V, or 52V eBike battery.

The other important measurement is the Amp-hour rating, indicating the battery’s total capacity and thus affecting the max range. The batteries on modern e-bikes typically have up to around 20 Ah, but 10-14 Ah is the most common number.

Again, Watt-hours stand for the total power stored in a battery, factoring voltage and energy capacity. The best eBike battery will undoubtedly have a high Wh rating. Find the Watt-hours by multiplying Amp-hour with voltage, as seen below.

For example, a 36V 16Ah battery has the same capacity as a 48V 12Ah battery (576 Wh), even though someone might think one stores more power than the other.

Several factors impact the range of an electric bike battery. As mentioned above, a small capacity battery can achieve longer ranges than a large capacity battery if the conditions are favorable .

There is a direct relationship between weight and the power required to move that weight; lower weight requires less energy to move. Therefore, a lighter rider and bike need less energy to move at a given speed, using less power and extending the range.

A higher Watt-hour rating always equals more range as long as the other factors stay the same.

For example, an e-bike has a 250Wh battery with a max range of 20 miles. Swap that battery for a 320Wh bicycle battery, and the range increases to 25 miles, and so on.

Motor Power

A high-power electric bicycle motor allows higher max speeds but dramatically increases the rate of energy consumption. The higher the Watt rating of a motor, the more battery voltage is required to reach full power. A higher voltage (e.g., 48V eBike battery) requires fewer Amp-hours to achieve the same total Watt-hour output, as illustrated in the table above.

Good aerodynamics and low rolling resistance can significantly improve battery range. For example, an electric road bike with an endurance riding position and fast-rolling 700c x 32mm tires can achieve high max ranges (over 60 miles) with low Watt-hour batteries.

Conversely, a heavy fat-tire e-bike with an upright riding position and slow 26″ x 4″ tires typically have much higher Wh batteries yet lower max ranges (40 miles).

Riding on bumpy, technical, and soft-surface terrain uses more energy than doing so on smooth, consistent, and hard-surface terrain . High rolling resistance and loss of momentum from frequent stopping and starting increase the rate of energy use.

Wind – As most cyclists know, wind can make riding much easier or a lot more painful. When riding into a headwind on an e-bike, you can maintain a high speed using pedal assistance, but the motor will be working harder and draining energy faster.

Temperature – Cold temperatures reduce total energy capacity (Wh) by slowing the force of the power flow from the battery to the motor (V). Remember, Ah x V = Wh. Thus, a lower voltage lowers the Watt-hour rating.

The higher the gradient, the more energy is required to ride at a given speed as gravity is working against you. Therefore, more altitude gain equals a shorter expected range.

Higher pedal assistance or more throttle use will drain a battery faster and decrease total range. To extend your battery range, use lower pedal assistance and contribute your power to achieve the desired speed.

Efficient use of gearing to maintain a high cadence drastically increases battery range. Always use the full range of gearing as you would on a regular bike.

What Capacity Battery Do I Need?

A large battery provides more range and requires less frequent charging but a considerable weight trade-off.

In general, the more range an electric bike has, the better. However, some riders or manufacturers prefer a smaller battery with a lower capacity to keep weight down. As a rule of thumb, you want the biggest, highest-quality battery available up to the weight you’re comfortable with.

Does Battery Position on the Bike Matter?

All e-bike batteries have a charge cycle rating which indicates the expected lifespan. One charge cycle is emptying and fully charging your battery.

If a 500Wh battery has a 500 charge cycle rating, after 500 charge cycles, a full charge should provide 60%-80% (300-400Wh) of the original 500Wh.

Cell quality and battery care also impact how fast this degradation occurs.

Under and Over-Charging

Most Li-ion batteries have a battery management system (BMS) that cuts off charging once complete. This system helps prolong the battery life.

However, all batteries benefit from the following charging practices:

  • Re-charge your battery before it dies fully

Like your phone or an electric vehicle, most ebikes have a Lithium-ion battery that helps spin the wheels, so you don't have to pedal as much. Lithium-ion batteries are ideal for an ebike, instead of a lead-acid battery, as they're lightweight, deliver plenty of power for increased range, and have good longevity.

As a result, that li-ion battery should last several years, if not longer. However, the manufacturer, quality, and other factors will affect its lifespan. Here's what you need to know.

Before discussing potential lifespan, it's important to remember that all batteries will degrade over time. Lithium-ion battery packs have a charging lifecycle, and after you've recharged the battery hundreds of times, it'll start to degrade and hold less of a charge.

That doesn't mean your ebike will stop working. Eventually, it'll degrade and won't hold a full charge. Instead of getting 50 miles per charge, it'll be closer to 40 miles, or about 80% capacity.

So, how long do electric bike batteries last? Unfortunately, that's a tricky question to answer. Going off the information above about battery degradation and charging cycles, your ebike battery should last for at least 300 to 500+ charging cycles. And considering you probably don't charge it daily, you can expect years of enjoyment from the bike.

A reasonable rough estimate is that your ebike battery should be healthy for a solid 3-5 years, if not longer. Even after recharging it once a week for six years, that's barely over 300 charge cycles. And considering many high-end battery packs can handle up to 1,200+ charge cycles, we're nowhere near the limit. By then, you'll likely already be eying a new bike.

But again, this doesn't mean the battery will stop working and prevent you from using your ebike. It simply means the battery might not charge to 100% anymore, so performance and range could decrease.

How long your ebike battery lasts will depend on a slew of different factors. Some of those include the battery type, manufacturer quality, how well an owner maintains proper charging and storage habits, not to mention the temperature of where it's stored. But more on that below.

If you use and charge your ebike daily, the battery will degrade faster than a casual rider. Then, you'll also want to consider charging habits, temperature, storage location, and other things to prolong the life of your bike.

Using a smartphone again as an example, you'll notice the battery drains if you leave your phone in a hot car over the summer or a cold vehicle during wintertime. Lithium-ion battery cells like to stay in the same temperature range as humans. Storing your ebike in a hot or cold garage will affect the battery charge and lifespan.

You'll also want to be mindful of battery level and undercharging. You shouldn't leave a battery near empty for long periods, like if you don't ride it over the winter. Instead, charge the battery to 80% and store it inside your home.

Buying an electric bike with an internal battery makes things more complicated. And what happens if the brand isn't around in 5-6 years? Sure, you can get a 3rd party battery and wire it to your bike, but the average owner doesn't want to mess with all that. Just know that for many ebikes, you can technically replace the battery, but don't bank on that for the future.

In closing, your ebike battery should easily last between 3-5 years, if not longer. And that's being on the cautious side. It's worth looking into brands with a good warranty, not to mention taking the steps mentioned above to keep the battery healthy for as long as possible.

On the plus side, electric bikes are still relatively new, and battery technology is evolving rapidly thanks to EVs. In the future, we could see smaller battery packs with better performance and longevity or even solid-state batteries at some point.

Most estimates set the range at two to five years or 10,000 to 30,000 miles, but this information isn’t very useful at an individual level.

To calculate how long your battery will last, start with the ‘charge cycle’ rating. Modern lithium-ion batteries are typically rated for somewhere from 500 to 1000 cycles.

One cycle is a full charge from empty to 100% or twice from 50% to 100%, and so on. However, when your battery reaches its rated number of cycles, it should still have around 70% of its original capacity.

For example, Bosch states that its batteries, rated for 500 cycles, “should have 60 to 70% of the original capacity” after reaching that number.

Achieving the manufacturer’s charge cycle rating with the battery in good condition assumes that you follow the charging, use, and storage guidelines.

For example, avoid allowing your battery to drain completely or overcharge, keep it in a cool, dry area, and store it long term with around 30 to 60% charge.

It’s worth mentioning that one rider might get as little as one-third of the lifespan from a battery as the next rider when taken in terms of mileage. For example, a light rider that uses ‘Eco’ mode could get 75 miles range per cycle, whereas a heavy rider that uses ‘Turbo’ mode may only get 25.

Example Battery Lifespan Calculation

Say your e-bike battery has a 500-cycle rating, and each full cycle returns an average of 50 miles of range for the first 250 cycles and 40 miles for the second 250. The total miles covered after 500 cycles would be 22,500 (500*45).

If your daily riding is 25 miles, you’ll do 9,125 each year (25*365). So after 2.46 years and 500 cycles (22,500/9,125), your battery range may drop to 35 or 30 miles per cycle and continue falling steadily until it dies.

However, if you’re content with a decreasing range, you could get another two or three years (1,500 total cycles) from the battery before it dies completely.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace an E-Bike Battery?

Electric bike batteries vary hugely in size and quality.

Naturally, larger batteries are more expensive, and those from big-name or premium brands like Bosch, Shimano, and Fazua will fetch higher prices as they are of higher quality and last longer.

When I rode my electric bike for the first time, I wondered how far I could go before my electric bike battery would die. I spent most of that week testing to find out how long an electric bike battery lasts.

As a general rule, an Electric bike Battery should last about 2-4 years. The battery charges for 3.5 to 6 hours, and when it is fully charged it lasts 15-100 miles of riding. With good care and maintenance, the battery should last years and work well on daily rides.

When buying an electric bike, it is important to make sure that the battery is going to last you for a long time. There are a lot of factors that can influence a bike’s battery and how long an eBike’s battery lasts, so let’s dive deeper.

How Many Hours does an Electric Bike Battery Last?

As a whole, when an electric bike battery is fully charged, it should last about 45+ miles of riding time. This is dependant on the brand and how the bike is used.

When a bike goes uphill, it is using more power to get up the hill. This can cause the bike to work harder for a shorter distance and can use more battery life than when it is traveling on flat roads or going down hills.

For people who commute to work and school on an e-bike, the standard amount of time the battery lasts is probably perfect for getting them to and from their daily locations. When you live a few blocks or even a few miles away from your work or school, it is hard to commute on foot.

With e-bikes, it is easier to get to locations within your town or city, and the battery should be able to last you throughout the day (depending on how far you’re traveling with it).

How Often Should You Charge Your Electric Bike Battery?

As a general rule, you should charge your electric bike battery daily, if you use it every day. You should start charging your electric bike battery as soon as you get home. and take it off the charger the next morning.

Electronic bikes should be kept charged so they are ready when you need them next. If you use it daily, charging it overnight can be a good solution.

If you worry about overcharging batteries, then when you get home, plug in your bike and then unplug it before you go to bed. If it is not fully charged, you can plug it back in when you wake up in the morning and unplug it when you need it.

Charging the battery on an e-bike is something that depends on your schedule and how likely you are to remember to plug it in and unplug it. For some people, it is easiest to plug it in when they return home and to unplug it once they need it the next morning.

That way they always have a fully charged bike that is ready when they need it. Plus, with this routine, it is less likely that you will forget about charging it.

How Long Does an Electric Bike Battery Take To Charge

On average it takes an electric bike battery 4 to 7 hours for the battery to charge fully. The first time you charge your eBike should take around 9 hours. These times may vary based on battery capacity, the type of battery, and how much existing charge it already has.

What Happens When an Electric Bike Battery Dies?

As a whole, when your electric bike battery dies, you need to charge it. If the battery no longer charges or if it does not hold a charge very well then it might be time to replace it. You will have a hard time attempting to use your electric bike with a dead battery.

Not all bikes charge the same way, so look in your owner’s manual or instruction manual for how to use the charger. Once you get the charging station set up, then you are free to charge your bike.

Do not overcharge your battery because this can cause the battery to wear out faster. Instead, set timers for when the bike is fully charged and ready.

Can I Leave my Electric Bike on Charge Overnight?

If your battery has a lot of power that’s ready to be used after your day, charge it when you get home and unplug it before bed. If you have a few hours in the evening for that to work, then this is another great option for the time of day to charge your bike.

Can you Overcharge an Electric Bike Battery?

As a general rule, you can overcharge an electric bike battery and this could potentially shorten the battery’s overall lifespan. If you can avoid it, do not overcharge your electric bike battery.

Overcharging it can shorten the battery’s life and make it overheat. Have a solid plan on when you should charge your bike according to your schedule. If the bike is dead or almost dead then charging it overnight is okay because it will take about 6 hours to fully charge.

If you need to charge it for a couple of hours before it is fully ready, then plug it in and set a timer on your phone. That way you can unplug it when the battery is done charging so that it doesn’t overcharge. Once you get into a regular rhythm it will be easy to avoid overcharging it.

How Can I Make My Electric Bike Battery Last Longer?

As a general rule, you can make your electric bike battery last longer by using less battery assistance by pedaling more. In addition, you want to charge your electric bike battery for the exact amount of time specified in the manufacture’s recommendations.

On an electric bike, you can choose when the battery is fully operating your bike or when it is just assisting you. To help your battery last a long time, have the battery assist you when there is rough terrain or when you are going uphill. That way, the battery isn’t working so hard on the hills.

You can also be sure to charge the battery for the amount of time it needs. If you need to charge it for a couple of hours, then charge it for a couple of hours. If your battery is dead and needs to be fully charged, then give it the time to fully charge for hours.

This can help the battery last longer because it won’t be overcharging. As stated before, overcharging is bad and can shorten the battery’s life, so make sure you charge it for the amount of time needed.

Do Electric Bikes Charge when you Pedal?

There are some brands that make electric bikes that charge while you pedal. After all, if you generate energy while you pedal, you won’t have to charge the battery as often. However, most models of e-bikes do not have this feature.

The best way to know if your bike charges, while you pedal, is to know the name of your bike and search for the “charge when you pedal” feature online. You can look at the company’s website and read more information about your bike and see if it mentions that it can charge while you ride.

If you are unsure, you can call customer service and ask them if your bike has this feature. If your e-bike does, then they should be able to let you know. Chances are that your bike doesn’t charge while you pedal because it is not a common feature on electric bikes. It doesn’t hurt to ask though!

Does Pedal-Assist Save Battery Life?

As a whole Pedal-Assist can save battery life on your electric bike. Using Pedal-Assist will increase your battery life and the amount of time that you can use your battery during your rides.

When riding an electric bike you can either let the motor do the work, you can manually pedal and you can do all the work, or you can use pedal assist that uses both your pedaling and the motor.

In comparison to using only the motor while riding, pedal-assist can help you save some battery life while riding. This is because you are contributing to the power and making the bike move, and the motor is simply assisting you and making the ride easier.

If you find that you are in a situation where your battery life is low, either turn it off and pedal yourself or use pedal assist and choose the level you want. With pedal assist, you can choose the level at which the motor is helping and you can choose anywhere from a low amount to a high amount of help. The more the motor works, the more battery life it’ll use. So to save battery life, use the motor less often.

How Much Does it Cost to Replace an Electric Bike Battery?

In total it costs $200-$800 to replace an electric bike battery depending on the bike and the brand. It is one of the most expensive components of your electric bike.

Batteries for bikes can be expensive to replace if you don’t have a warranty on them. When you buy an electric bike, warranties are either included in the purchase or you can add the warranty for an extra charge. If you have a warranty, your bike will be covered if something goes wrong with it.

If you don’t have a warranty that covers the new battery for your bike then you could end up spending a lot of money.

To avoid such a high cost, call the company when your battery needs to be replaced and see if there is anything they can do for you. Ask if there is a way to lower the cost at all or if they will cover it and send you a new one.

If you know you bought a warranty on it, give them the information they need to look you up in their system so that they can give you the services you have already paid for.

If you try to lower the cost and it doesn’t work, look up vendors that are selling that specific battery you need or try to buy it on Amazon. This can help you avoid high prices.

How Long Does an Electric Bike Battery Last?

The Short Answer

Electric bike batteries typically last a minimum of three years but can last up to eight years with proper care. Charging between 30% and 80% and avoiding overcharging helps extend battery life. Replacement batteries can cost between £300 and over £1,000.

Electric bike batteries run on the same lines as a smartphone equivalent. They need to be charged with due care and attention. Efficient charging will produce anything up to eight years of charge. It’s imperative to note that lifespan is best measured as the number of full charges, not in years.

How Long Should an E-Bike Battery Last?

An e-bike battery should last a minimum of three years, based on manufacturers’ own test results for use and their most efficient style of charging. However, no two riders use e-bikes the same way and there are many batteries in circulation which perform differently. So the number of years varies.

Charge cycles are used to try and offer consistency in lifespan. One charge cycle takes the battery from its discharged state (0%) up to a full charge (100%). 30% to 80% would be a half charge. 65% to 90% is a quarter charge and so on. The charge cycle is expressed in units, not as a percentage change. 

The majority of good quality batteries will generate up to 1,000 charge cycles. E-bike batteries can easily be replaced and represent a significant saving for commuters compared to cars. They are generally considered to offer a lower environmental impact .

E-Bike Battery Lifespan

Careful charging is crucial to the performance of the battery. E-bikes are so much more expensive than analogue bikes so it’s vital that you consistently get the maximum benefit of ownership.

Most riders won’t let the battery level drop to zero so one full charge, which typically can take up to six hours for most batteries, might not be necessary. That’s a good thing, because the unmonitored overnight full charge, à la smartphone in the bedroom, is not recommended. 

How Often Do Electric Bikes Need Charging?

Electric bikes need charging consistently and any indicator should not be allowed to regularly drop to 0%, or below one bar on the display. Manufacturers recommend enough charges to keep the battery level between 30% and 80%. In this range the charge is efficient and avoids overloading the unit.

How often you will need to charge depends on a range of other factors. Some are out of your control, but some are, quite literally, in your hands. They include:

  • Do you ride pedal-assist or throttle control? Throttle control will drain the battery more.
  • Is your pedalling style physically demanding or sedate? Sedate pedalling will drain the battery more if you use more assistance to compensate.
  • What is the battery requirement for your typical journey? Just a boost up one hill, or only into a headwind, or consistent pedal assistance for the whole ride? More use will drain the battery more frequently.

If we rely on manufacturers figures, the battery range can run from 15-100 miles / 24-160 kilometres. You have to measure up all of the constraints, like those above, which influence the lifespan of one full charge. And don’t forget the battery works harder in the cold weather compared to warmer climes, so will use more of the charge.

Should I Charge my E-Bike After Each Ride?

Charging an e-bike after each ride may be habitual but ultimately is not necessary. Manufacturers suggest that keeping a charge of no less than 30% is acceptable. Providing that the next journey does not use more than this amount, you shouldn’t need to charge after every ride. 

Some users of e-bikes recommend an alternate programme of charging to 30%, then 60%, then 30% and so on. Remember that an e-bike can be ridden in just the same way as a legacy bike if you have no battery charge. 

Should I Keep My E-Bike Battery Topped Up?

Keeping the e-bike battery topped up is not necessary if you know your next journey to a power source you can use will not require a full charge. Manufacturers also do not recommend keeping the charge going when at 100% because this worsens the long-term performance of the battery. 

How to Extend E-Bike Battery Life

As well as avoiding overcharging the e-bike battery there are other practical, day-to-day tips which can extend the battery lifespan. There is a cost attached to charging and of course, e-bikes can be ridden without pedal assistance or the throttle control. It’s up to you how frequently you choose to use the support offered.

E-Bike Battery Charging Tips [Top 8]

  • Avoid battery overcharging when 100% reached by setting a timer on your phone.
  • Store your battery in a cool, dry place when not in use to avoid humidity affecting performance.
  • Only charge using the battery manufacturer’s equipment.
  • Maintain a charge range between 30% and 80%  – check your manufacturer’s recommended levels.
  • Keep some charge in the battery when not in use – especially in the long term.
  • Avoid frequently running the battery down to 0%.
  • Never cover the charger or battery when charging.
  • Remove the charger when washing the bike and avoid high pressure hoses around any electrical components on the bike.

E-Bike Battery Repair

You’ll notice when an e-bike battery is not performing as you’d expect. Your maximum range on a single charge will drop. Any pedal assistance or throttle control will stutter when asked to perform under a load – going uphill or carrying more cargo than usual. The assistance might cut out temporarily or the charging light will stay green and not red when the battery is plugged in to the charger.

Try some at-home tests before you give up the ghost and consign your e-bike battery to the garage. Try a longer, one-off charge. Give the battery and all contact points on it and the frame a thorough clean with water. Remember that the battery will be water-resistant, not waterproof. Some DIY and reconditioning research are important considerations.

Can You Recondition an E-Bike Battery?

Certain e-bike batteries can be reconditioned. Individual depleted cells can be replaced. Sometimes this can improve the performance of the battery. Check with your own manufacturer first. Their logo should be on the battery. A qualified technician should do this. Check your warranty beforehand.

Check the warranty offered by the repairer for their work. Don’t ever risk any performance boosts with your reconditioning. Please remember that specialist couriers are now required to transport lithium ion batteries which will increase the cost of the project. A quick overview suggests that batteries cost between £250 / $281 and £1,225 / £1,376 to recondition before postage.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace an E-Bike Battery?

It costs a minimum of £300 / $337 to replace a battery but the price increases as battery quality, range and characteristics improves. There is a wide range of competing products and well-known brands competing for your attention and cash. The production run on older batteries may have ended.

It’s worth researching and calculating the long term availability of a replacement battery. Planning ahead beyond the lifespan of your current unit is crucial to ensure a replacement can be sought. 

Some e-bikes companies operating in the marketplace today will not exist in five years time. Batteries from brands from Bosch , Panasonic or Samsung are the more likely to offer replacement options for you and your bike manufacturer.

You could buy a replacement battery at the same time as you collect your new e-bike. This ensures your investment in the e-bike makes economic sense when the first battery runs out. Many riders do this anyway as a matter of course and keep the second charged up as a ‘spare’.

Three well known bike brands which operate in the e-bike sphere are Decathlon, Rad Power Bikes and Trek. You have a bicycle supermarket, specialist niche provider and international all-rounder right there. Replacement batteries are available for some or all of their range of models and can either be ordered directly or from a third party site. It makes sense to invest some time checking if you can replace the battery before you buy.

Follow these steps to keep your electric bike and its battery running smoothly

A high-quality electric bike can be a significant investment, with prices ranging from less than $1,000 to well over $10,000, and the average in the $2,000 to $4,000 range. In addition to being costly to replace, high demand for e-bikes in some areas could make it tricky to find the one you want. Sales of electric motor-assisted bikes were 238 percent higher in 2023 than in 2019, according to Circana, a firm that tracks the industry.

At any price, an electric bike can pay big dividends in increased fitness and inexpensive transportation. Eleven percent of Americans have ridden an e-bike over the past year, according to a recent  nationally representative survey  of 2,035 U.S. adults conducted by CR (February 2024). The survey also found that, among those who had ridden an e-bike or an e-scooter in the past year, fun and leisure activities were one of the reasons 71 percent chose to ride an e-bike or e-scooter.

Owning an electric bike is much less expensive than owning a car or motorcycle in most cases and also contributes to your physical fitness. A 2021 study published in  Translational Journal  concluded that, compared with a regular bicycle, riding an electric bike for a simulated 3-mile commute resulted in lower metabolic, cardiovascular, and perceived effort and met the intensity level associated with healthy physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization and the American College of Sports Medicine. (The ACSM recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate cardiovascular exercise.)

Although they use parts that may be the same as or similar to what you’d find on a conventional bike, electric bikes also have an electric motor, typically powered by a lithium-ion battery. The added power and complexity make both riding and maintenance a bit different from a conventional bicycle, but following our tips can help you get the most from your electric bike.

We asked experts at bike brands Rad Power Bikes, Specialized, and Trek about the best methods to pedal your electric bike and for “hacks” to make it last longer, as well as advice on how to prevent your electric bike from being stolen. We also wanted to know the best ways to charge and maintain the battery, which can cost $500 or more to replace, and how to prevent an electric bike battery fire.

Here’s what they told us.

How to Shift Gears and Pedal on an Electric Bike

There are two common kinds of electric bikes: mid-drive, in which power from the electric motor helps turn the pedals and gets routed through the bike’s gearing, and hub-drive, in which the motor sends power directly to the rear wheel (pedal power from your legs still goes through the bike’s gearing).

Some e-bikes, regardless of where the motor is located, have a separate throttle control, typically a thumb-operated lever that applies electric power without the rider needing to pedal. This is handy for a quick, effortless takeoff, but it uses a lot more battery life than a pedal-assist setup, and that can limit the bike’s electric range, as well as the amount of exercise you’ll get from riding the bike.

Nate Bosscher, a senior engineer on the electric bikes team at Trek, says the motor on a mid-drive electric bike is “upstream of the gears and the chain, and that certainly puts more strain on the drivetrain than a non-e-bike.” You can reduce the wear and tear on the drivetrain by regular cleaning and lubrication, he says. Bosscher says hub-drive motors are less sensitive to strain than mid-drives.

Whether you’re riding a mid- or hub-drive electric bike, you should downshift to an easier gear ahead of a traffic light. That’s so you can resume pedaling without having to “mash” or stand on the pedals to make the bike move, Bosscher says.

You also don’t want to stand on the pedals with maximum force while trying to shift, which is especially hard on the bike’s transmission, Bosscher adds. This is true whether you’re shifting at a slower speed or flying down the road full-tilt. And it’s always best to lighten your pedaling as you shift gears to reduce wear on the gear cluster and chain. 

Marco Sonderegger, a senior product manager at Specialized, says that the best pedaling speed on the company’s mid-drive bikes is 70 to 90 rpm, which means your legs are moving at a speed similar to a fast jog. That typically puts less stress on the chain because you’re not putting a lot of torque on the system with each pedal stroke.

The moderate pedal speed also optimizes your range and eases the load on the motor because “the faster the internal electrical engine can spin, the higher the efficiency.”

Trek’s Bosscher says most e-bike manufacturers gear their motors for pedaling speeds of at least 60 rpm. For this reason, Sonderegger believes spinning at 70 to 90 rpm will increase your range roughly 10 to 12 percent compared with mashing at 50 rpm or slower.

That speed is also physically easier, Sonderegger says, because repeatedly pushing very hard and slowly is like doing heavy leg presses.

Caring for Your Electric Bike Battery

An e-bike’s battery can be one of its more expensive components, so it’s a good idea to care for the battery properly to ensure its long life and safe operation. The manufacturers we talked to said you can expect your bike’s battery to last for roughly five years. A lot will depend, of course, on how often you use the bike, where you store it, and how often you charge it.

Prolong Your Electric Bike's Battery Life

Regardless of how you ride, manufacturers shared a number of recommendations with CR for prolonging battery life.

Don’t drain the battery completely. Bike manufacturers use software to make sure batteries are not damaged during charging or discharging. But don’t let the battery get below 10 percent too frequently. Most electric bikes have an LCD display, or an indicator on the battery itself, so you can keep track.

Charge regularly. A spokesperson from Rad Power Bikes says you should recharge your battery after each ride, but then unplug the bike once it’s fully charged. Trek’s Bosscher says don’t let the battery get below 20 percent before recharging it. “Partially discharging and then charging will extend the service life of a battery significantly,” he says.

Store it partially charged. If you’re not going to ride your electric bike for a few weeks or longer, Bosscher says, it’s better to store the bike at less than fully charged. “Storing a battery at 100 percent charge is actually bad for its longevity,” he says. Trek’s guidelines recommend storage at between 40 and 80 percent charge, Rad says 75 percent, and Specialized at roughly 60 percent. Bosch, the German multinational engineering and technology company that makes a lot of the mid-drive bike components, recommends a 30 to 60 percent range. Consult the owner’s manual for specific guidance for your bike.

Cold is the enemy. As with anything powered by a battery, extremes of heat and cold will hamper your range. If storing an electric bike in an unheated shed during winter is your only option, take the battery indoors if you can and charge it separately at room temperature. Rad, Specialized, and Trek all say that riding in the cold won’t harm an electric bike’s battery, though you could see reduced range. However, your best bet is to start a ride with a battery that has been stored and charged in your heated home, then inserted in your bike before departure.

Wash with care. While electric bike batteries and related wiring are generally well-insulated from even heavy rain, they’re not designed to be submerged or cleaned by a high-pressure washer. Rad recommends removing the battery from the frame, wiping down the battery case and tray with a damp cloth, and allowing everything to dry completely before reassembling. This is consistent with Bosch’s guidance and that of other manufacturers. Wash a bicycle with a sponge and soapy water rather than a garden hose to prevent forcing water past delicate grease seals, which hold components (like bearings) that need to stay sealed and well-oiled. 

Prevent an Electric Bike Battery Fire

Although electric bike fires are relatively rare, their number and intensity have been on the rise as e-bikes have proliferated—particularly in New York City, where delivery riders and commuters have been using them for years already. Here are some tips from the New York City Fire Department about how to prevent electric bike fires.

  • Buy an electric bike that is certified by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage.
  • Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made specifically for the bike.
  • Do not leave an electric bike unattended while it’s charging, and don’t leave it charging overnight.
  • If a battery overheats or you notice an odor, a change in shape or color, leaking, or odd noises, stop using it immediately.
  • If the battery reacts in an alarming way, and it is safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can catch fire and call 911.
  • Keep batteries and devices at room temperature. Do not place them in direct sunlight.
  • Store batteries away from anything flammable.
  • Do not use aftermarket batteries.
  • Do not charge an electronic device under your pillow, on your bed, or near a couch.
  • Do not block your primary way into and out of the building with an electric bike.
  • Do not leave an electric bike in a child’s room or in any sleeping areas.

Deter Electric Bike Thieves

A chain or U-lock is absolutely necessary if you’re going to park your electric bike on the street. See CR’s bike lock ratings and reviews for more information. Always lock through a part of the frame and one of the wheels to a fixed structure. Worst case: Lock it to something that’s a chore to move. Electric bikes are relatively heavy so moving both the bicycle and another object would deter most thieves. Always remove the battery, too. Since bike sales have boomed, so have bike thefts . Removing the battery from an electric bike is an easy deterrent because that superhot commodity doesn’t look so appealing to a thief if it’s missing one of its most expensive parts. 

It’s a good idea to remove the bike’s battery even if your e-bike is locked to a rack on your car or RV, because exposure to weather and extremes in temperature isn’t great for that battery, either—and, again, will make your bicycle that much less enticing to criminals.

On average, a typical e-bike battery life is around 4-5 years. On the shorter side, it is about 2 years, and on the longer side, it is up to 8 years, provided you have a good quality battery, use it properly, and ride it moderately.

How Long Do E-Bike Batteries Last?

On average, the typical e-bike battery life is around 4-5 years. And if you are using a good quality battery, you should at least expect a good range for many years if you ride moderately and take good care of it.

So, you don’t have to say goodbye to your e-bike battery after only 2 years. In fact, the high-quality Bosch battery brand suggests that the battery should be good for around 10 years or 1500 charge cycles. And even after 1500 charge cycles, there’s a chance that the battery will continue to work.

Did you know? Bosch offers a guarantee of 2 years or 500 charge cycles (whichever comes first) for their batteries.

However, the primary point to consider here is the gradual loss of battery capacity over time. In other words, as your battery ages, you can’t go as far as you used to go on one charge . The range of the battery will continue to decrease.

What is the Average E-Bike Battery Range?

Now, the most important consideration of an e-bike’s battery life is discussed in terms of the charge cycles. On a rechargeable battery, a charge cycle comprises a complete charge plus a total discharge (from 100% to 0%).

On one complete charge cycle, the battery offers you a specific range of distance you can go, based on your riding style and how much pedal assist and throttle you use. Generally, when you pedal in a relaxed way, most e-bikes can run about 22-50 miles on one charge. This is what we say is the charge-holding capacity of the battery.

Over time, with usage, it starts to degrade, and the battery capacity slowly starts to decrease.

So let’s suppose, on average, your new battery used to offer around 22 miles of riding distance on one charge. After one or two years, you should expect the battery to lose some of its capacity. So now, on a single charge, the battery may offer only a 20-mile range.

What Are the Types of Electric Bike Batteries ?

There are really only two different types of rechargeable batteries suitable for today’s e-bikes. These include lead-acid (PbA) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. 

Although some electric bicycles still use lead batteries, lithium-ion batteries are the most widely used for newer model e-bikes. Lithium batteries, in general, hold up to 1000 complete charge cycles.

How Many Miles Do Electric Batteries Offer In Their Entire Life?

A lithium battery typically offers over 1000 charging cycles before you need to replace them. Let’s suppose you are getting a 40-mile range from one full battery charge .

Calculating further, you can expect 40 (miles) X 1000 (cycles) = 40,000 miles of total range in the entire life of your battery.

Of course, these figures are just rough estimations to give you an idea of how far you can go on one battery over time, without refurbishing it or replacing it. 

Some e-bikes can even run up to about 80+ miles on a single charge. So if we calculate based on that long range, a typical e-bike battery should last about 80 X 1000 = 80,000 miles .

Do E-Bike Batteries Wear Out Even If We Don’t Use Them?

Yes, e-bike batteries can wear out even if they’re not being used. It happens because of the phenomenon known as self-discharging , in which internal chemical reactions decrease the stored battery charge without any connection between electrodes or external circuits.

Batteries generate electricity because of the chemical reaction happening inside the cell. They then store the chemical energy and convert it into electrical energy.

However, it’s essential to note that a lithium-ion battery can gradually and eventually discharge even if you don’t use it. Further, if you store an electric bike battery for a long time, irreparable harm can occur because of internal chemical reactions. 

Do E-Bike Batteries Have Warranties?

E-bike batteries typically have warranties, but they vary from brand to brand. The warranty period is usually based on a set time frame or amount of charge cycles the battery goes through.

Generally speaking, with batteries, you are offered the shortest warranty period. However, you may be able to purchase an extended warranty.

The best way to know when you should replace your e-bike battery is when it doesn’t offer you enough range .

With some high-quality batteries (like Bosch), there is an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) through which you can know the current battery capacity and how many charge cycles the battery has gone through.

But even if you have an inexpensive battery, you’ll experience your battery dying sooner than expected. Pay close attention to this to avoid any sudden surprises.

How Do I Make My E-Bike Battery Last Longer?

You can make your electric bike battery last longer by taking good care of it and following these battery care tips.

#1. Avoid Overcharging Your Battery

Overcharging can shorten an e-bike battery’s lifespan, as well as make it overheat, especially for older or cheaper batteries. In these cases, avoid leaving it plugged into a wall outlet longer than necessary.

Luckily, however, most modern e-bike batteries are equipped with smart functionality, which enables them to stop charging once the total charging capacity is achieved .

That said, energy in a battery slowly discharges on its own even when you don’t use it. And when you leave it on the battery charger, it can resume charging once again when the stored energy level decreases below a certain point.

Long story short, keeping the battery connected to the charger even after 100% is achieved won’t help keep it charged. The natural on-off cycle will ultimately lower the overall battery energy capacity when it doesn’t need further charging.

Severe hot or cold temperatures can hurt the overall performance of the battery. Generally, lithium batteries prefer relatively cooler temperatures. So to maximize the battery life, be sure not to let it get too hot.

Generally, the optimal temperature for storing batteries is between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

#3. Keep the Battery In A Dry Location

Humidity is another factor you should consider as it isn’t great for electrical components. Thus, ensure that your e-bike is stored in a dry location, preferably indoors, or in a garage or bike shed.

Also, inspect the battery contacts once in a while to keep an eye on corrosion and remove it whenever you notice it.

#4. Use The Boost Mode In Your E-Bike Minimally

Many e-bikes come with a boost mode, or throttle, that helps in accelerating to the max speed of your motor in just a few seconds.

Even though the boost mode is a great feature to use every once in a while, it discharges the e-bike battery quickly and minimizes its lifespan. So try to use it less often if your goal is to maximize the battery life!

#5. Avoid Fully Discharging Your Battery

For better battery health, you should avoid fully discharging your battery frequently.

It’s okay if the battery is fully discharged once in a while. But be mindful that it is harmful to discharge your lithium-ion e-bike battery to 0% on a regular basis or when leaving it in storage.

Instead, you should perform shallow recharges and discharges. This means it is better to charge your battery after every few rides to avoid full discharge. The shallow charges and discharges don’t put much stress on the battery and thus make it last longer.

You want to be able to ride and enjoy your electric bike whether you’re taking a leisurely afternoon cruise in the park or challenging the automobile traffic on your morning commute. To do that, all of your electric bike systems must be working well. One key component is your electric bike’s battery. You want to keep it in good shape, so here are five electric bike charging tips meant to help your e-bike battery live a long life.

Tip No. 1: Charge a New Electric Bike Battery for 12 Hours

When you first get a new electric bike take the time to charge it’s battery completely for up to 12 hours. This long initial charge ensures current is flowing through all the cells and helps to condition the battery right out of the box.

Tip No. 2: Charge Your Ebike Battery Regularly

The lithium chemistry batteries used on EVELO electric bikes, and really most electric bikes, should last longer with regular use and, therefore, regular charging. For the most part, you don’t need to let your electric bike battery discharge completely. Rather try to charge the battery when there is between 30 percent and 60 percent of the capacity remaining. Some battery experts do, however, suggest an occasional full discharge, perhaps, once every 30 to 40 charges. But otherwise, use the 30-to-60 percent guideline.

In order to charge your electric bike battery regularly, you need to use it regularly, so let this be another encouragement to get out and ride.

Tip No. 3: Avoid Temperature Extremes

An electric bike battery feels the same way about the weather as most electric bike riders do. Moderate temperatures are better.

To prolong an electric bike battery, avoid temperature extremes both in usage and when you are charging the battery.

Tip No. 4: Don’t Overcharge an Electric Bike Battery

Don’t just leave your electric bike battery on the charger for long periods of time — think several days or more. When you do, you can create a situation wherein the battery will discharge leaving it at perhaps 95 percent of capacity. The charger then goes to work, topping off the battery. This cycle of minor discharges and topping off continues creating a series of poor charging cycles.

Instead, use a timer on your mobile device to remind you to take the battery off of the charger.

Tip No. 5: Don’t Store an Empty Battery

Sometimes you may need to store your electric bike battery. Perhaps, you’re about to take a trip. Maybe it is too cold outside to ride. Regardless, don’t store the battery empty, rather look for it to have about 40-to-70 percent of its full capacity.

The battery is the eBike’s power source. It supplies the motor with the electrical energy that is required to provide power assistance when cycling. So it is hardly surprising that there is frequent discussion and “talking shop” about the eBike’s battery in particular. What is the difference between batteries? How far can you go on a fully charged battery? What do you have to remember about storage? Thomas Raica, head of technical customer application, here provides information and advice.

1. What is special about lithium-ion batteries?

Thomas Raica: Lithium-ion batteries are among the most up-to-date and common eBike batteries around. Thanks to their high energy density they can store more energy and are relatively light in weight. We rely on lithium-ion technology for all of our Bosch eBike batteries – our PowerPacks. Bosch batteries weigh about 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) and are among the lightest on the market. They also have the highest energy density.

2. How long does a battery last?

Thomas Raica: Lithium-ion batteries are not only light; they also have a long service life. Bosch PowerPacks are designed for many tours, distances and years of use. The smart electronic Bosch battery management system protects lithium-ion batteries from too high of temperatures, overloading and deep discharging. A precise life span is impossible to forecast, however. The battery’s service life will depend mainly on the nature and duration of the stress to which it is subjected.

3. How can you influence the service life?

Thomas Raica: To get the longest service life out of a battery eBikers need only to follow a few simple rules in respect of protection, transport and storage. They include storing the battery in a dry environment and protecting it from direct sunlight at a room temperature of around 50 °F (10 °C) to 68 °F (20 °C). The ideal charging level for a battery is between 30% and 60%. Ideally, the battery should be recharged at room temperature. When transporting an eBike it is important to remove the battery from the bike and store it safely in the car.

4. How long does it take to charge a battery?

Thomas Raica: The charging time depends on the battery’s capacity. Using the standard charger (for a half charge) the PowerPack 400 takes about 1.5 hours and the PowerPack 500 roughly 2 hours. A totally depleted PowerPack 400 takes 3.5 and a PowerPack 500 roughly 4.5 hours.

5. How far can you travel on one battery?

And which factors affect the battery’s range? Thomas Raica: For many eBikers these are crucial questions to which there are, however, no generally valid answers. The answer can differ enormously – from less than 12 miles (20 km) to well over 62 miles (100 km) on a full battery charge. Many different factors affect the range. They include the assistance level, cycling behavior, air resistance, the cyclist’s weight, tire pressure and, of course, the terrain. What are the ground conditions? Am I cycling on a paved road, a farm track or a forest trail? Does my route include ascents or consist solely of flat and open country? All of these factors influence the battery range. 6. What precautions should be taken in winter?

Thomas Raica: A general rule is that cold weather reduces battery performance. That is why, in winter at below-zero temperatures, it is advisable to wait until just before you set out before attaching to your eBike a battery that has been charged and stored at room temperature. If you have not used the eBike for quite a while – in winter, for example – the battery should be stored in an environment that is dry and cool at about 30% to 60% of its charge capacity.

7. What must be kept in mind when cleaning the battery?

Thomas Raica: A pressure washer is unsuitable for cleaning an eBike, especially its electronic components. We recommend wiping the battery with a damp cloth. Do not use strong detergents that might affect the surface and always remove the battery before cleaning the eBike. Its plug connectors should also be cleaned and lightly greased from time to time.

8. How are batteries best charged?

Thomas Raica: PowerPacks with their lithium-ion cells can be charged for as short a period as you like irrespective of their charge status. The PowerPack’s integrated battery management system, combined with a Bosch charger, protects the battery from overload when charging. Interrupting the charging process does the battery no harm. An important point to bear in mind is that eBike batteries should only be charged with the right charger because irreparable damage might otherwise result and warranty or guarantee claims might become invalid.

9. How often can a battery be recharged?

Thomas Raica: Even after 500 full charges the battery will still retain a high capacity—60 to 70% of the original capacity will then still be available. In an ADAC test carried out in autumn 2015 a Bosch eBike battery was fully discharged and recharged 1,515 times before it retained only 30% of its original capacity and was no longer of any real use. This means that the battery would have been sufficient for up to 35,400 miles (57,000 km) – or one-and-a-half times around the globe.

10. Where can batteries be repaired?

Thomas Raica: High-quality lithium-ion batteries like the Bosch PowerPacks are complex, finely-tuned systems the repair of which requires special expertise and elaborate production facilities. That is why a defective battery must in nearly all cases be replaced. We recommend the following procedure. First, let the dealer check whether the battery really is defective and has, for instance, a fault in its electronics. That is something the dealer can check using the battery management system and the diagnostic tool. If the battery is defective, the dealer will dispose of it with due regard for the safety regulations.

11. How do you dispose of an old battery?

Thomas Raica: The dealer will ensure that a Bosch PowerPack is disposed of in an environmentally sound way free of charge. Disposal in the United States is handled by CALL2RECYCLE at (877) 723-1297.

Why e-bike companies are embracing recycling while fighting repair

E -bikes have been in the news recently for a reason nobody wants: Their batteries are sparking dangerous fires. One conflagration burned down homes and businesses in the Bronx, in New York City, in March, and another blaze at an e-bike store in Manhattan killed four people in June. Those fires are bringing additional scrutiny and regulation to a mode of transportation that’s been hailed as a promising climate solution. But they are also having an unexpected impact on conversations about the right to repair a bicycle, something generations of bicycle owners have taken for granted .

In recent months, People for Bikes , the national trade organization representing bicycle manufacturers, has reached out to lawmakers and officials in several states to request that e-bikes be exempted from right-to-repair bills. Those bills aim to make it easier for members of the public to access the parts, tools, and information they need to fix their stuff. The industry claims it’s a matter of safety, and that people without the proper training should not attempt to repair e-bikes — especially not the batteries. Instead, manufacturers want to see dead and broken batteries recycled, which is why they recently launched a public education campaign encouraging consumers to do so.

Recycling is a crucial step for dealing with battery waste sustainably. It keeps batteries out of landfills and it can reduce the need for additional mining of critical battery metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. But for the e-bike industry to be sustainable over the long term, e-bikes also need to be repairable, since repair prevents waste and conserves the resources that go into making new stuff. To right-to-repair advocates, the claim that it’s unsafe for consumers to fix them is familiar: Consumer tech companies like Apple have said the same thing about repairing smartphones for years. When it comes to e-bikes, advocates worry that safe battery handling is being used to distract from another problem they say right-to-repair would help solve: Cheap, hard-to-repair e-bikes are flooding into cities around the country. These are the same bikes that sometimes have substandard batteries that experts suspect are at the root of the fire crisis.

“I too want people to go to safe repairers,” Nathan Proctor, who heads the national right-to-repair campaign at the US Public Research Interest Group, told Grist in an email. “But I don’t think monopolizing access helps at all.”

E-bikes are soaring in popularity , and for good reason. These battery-powered bicycles allow people to travel farther and faster than they can using an analog bike. They cost less than cars to buy and to own, take up far less space, and can be parked for free. Compared with gas-powered cars, e-bikes are incredibly climate friendly: A recent analysis by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that the typical e-bike rider emits zero to three grams of carbon dioxide per mile pedaled, compared with 350 grams per mile driven in a crossover SUV. E-bikes also have sustainability and safety advantages over EVs, including smaller batteries that require less lithium mining and pose less of a danger to pedestrians . 

But while e-bikes are clearly a sustainable choice compared with driving, many e-bike advocates want to see the industry become a model of affordable, accessible, and environmentally friendly transit. For that to happen, consumers need to be able to repair their e-bikes to ensure they last a long time. In addition to a bicycle frame, wheels, and a battery, e-bikes include various electronic displays and sensors, as well as a motor that powers the pedal-assist system. All of these components can break down and require repairs or replacement. 

On battery recycling, the U.S. e-bike industry has made good progress. About five years back, a group of bicycle manufacturers came together to lay the groundwork for an industry-wide battery recycling program. That program was launched on a pilot scale in late 2021. Less than two years later, it has 54 participating bicycle brands and more than 1,800 retail stores serving as drop-off locations for end-of-life batteries nationwide. (An e-bike battery is considered at the “end of its life” when it no longer holds a charge well, which might occur after as few as two or as many as 10 years of use.) 

The e-bike battery recycling initiative is funded like an escrow program, according to Eric Frederickson of Call2Recycle, the recycling logistics nonprofit that runs it. Participating brands pay a fee into a fund for every e-bike battery they import. Call2Recycle uses those funds to administer the collection, transportation, and recycling of e-bike batteries at several locations around the country. Recycling partners include Canada-based Li-Cycle, which has a battery recycling hub in Rochester, New York; Redwood Materials, headquartered in northern Nevada; and Cirba Solutions, a battery logistics company that is expanding into lithium-ion battery recycling. Call2Recycle also trains participating retail shops on how to safely handle the batteries, including identifying any damaged batteries to pack in secure containers.

To date, Frederickson said, the program has recycled nearly 6,000 e-bike batteries, or 37,000 pounds of them. Ash Lovell, the electric bicycle policy and campaign director for People for Bikes, which endorses the program, hopes to see that number grow. In May, People for Bikes launched Hungry for Batteries , a new public education campaign that seeks to raise awareness of how to properly recycle e-bike batteries.

While the recycling program started out with a sustainability focus, as e-bike battery fires in New York City and elsewhere started making national headlines, it became “very much a safety focused campaign,” Lovell said. “​​That’s been People for Bikes’ big push over the last few months.”

But those same battery safety concerns are now placing bicycle manufacturers at loggerheads with advocates for independent repair.

In a letter sent to New York Governor Kathy Hochul in December, People for Bikes asked that e-bikes be excluded from the state’s forthcoming digital right-to-repair law , which granted consumers the right to fix a wide range of electronic devices. The letter cited “an unfortunate increase in fires, injuries and deaths attributable to personal e-mobility devices” including e-bikes. Many of these fires, People for Bikes claimed in the letter, “appear to be caused by consumers and others attempting to service these devices themselves,” including tinkering with the batteries at home. Before Hochul signed the right-to-repair bill, it was revised to exempt e-bikes.

Asked for data to back up the claim that e-bike fires were being caused by unauthorized repairs, Lovell said that it was “anecdotal, from folks that are on the ground in New York.” A spokesperson for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, told Grist that battery fires can be the result of physical, electrical, or thermal damage to the battery, as well as “manufacturing defects.” Last December, the CPSC sent a letter to numerous e-bike manufacturers calling on them to ensure their products comply with voluntary industry safety standards for batteries and other electronic systems. 

The CPSC spokesperson declined to comment on the role that e-bike, or e-bike battery, repair might be playing in the recent fires. The New York City Fire Department did not respond to a request for comment. 

Though People for Bikes’ letter implied otherwise, the intent of New York’s right-to-repair law was not to give people special tools to pry open their batteries at home. The law stipulates that manufacturers must give independent shops and device owners access to the same parts, tools, and documentation they provide to their authorized repair partners. And when there’s a problem with an e-bike battery, most manufacturers offer consumers one option: Replacing it.

“There’s no training on battery repair, that I know of, within the bike industry,” said Ryan Waddell, who recently worked as a lead mechanic at the nonprofit e-bike shop GoodTurnCycles, based in Colorado. “If something happens with a name brand manufacturer [battery], they’ll usually want the battery shipped back” so it can be replaced.

What New York’s right-to-repair law would have done is increase access to parts, tools and information that manufacturers only make available to select e-bike dealers. For example, e-bike component manufacturer Bosch produces a diagnostic reader that helps identify components that require a reset or replacement, but you have to be a Bosch-certified repair shop to purchase it. Some manufacturers also offer authorized shops, but not consumers, the ability to do major software updates on their systems. And e-bike brands often only sell components, like the motor controller that manages the amount of voltage going to the motor, to dealers of their choosing.

“There’s huge interest” in fixing e-bikes, said Kyle Wiens, CEO of the online repair guide site iFixit. But outside of manufacturers and specialized shops, “no one knows how.”

Wiens said that in addition to making spare parts and repair guides available, the e-bike industry needs to do a better job designing its products to be repairable. Across the industry, he says, there’s very little standardization in terms of parts. Waddell agreed.

“With e-bikes, nothing’s really standardized,” he said. That means that when a crucial component, like the controller, breaks down, it can be tough to find replacements — especially if that model of e-bike is no longer made. 

Right-to-repair laws could also help remediate what several industry observers described as a dismal repair scene for the direct-to-consumer e-bikes being sold online. These bikes tend to be cheaper than those made by industry leading brands like Trek and Rad Power Bikes, and they tend to break down more quickly. These are often the same bikes whose batteries don’t meet industry safety standards and may pose a greater fire risk. John Mathna, who runs the e-bike repair shop Chattanooga Electric Bike Co., says that many online e-bike companies offer “virtually no support” when there’s a problem. 

“I’ve never seen a repair manual for any online bike,” Mathna said. “Many independent repair shops won’t touch them.”

Right-to-repair bills won’t solve all of the e-bike industry’s repairability issues, and they won’t end the debate over safe battery repair. But Wiens believes these bills would be a “big help” in terms of forcing out information the public needs to repair their e-bikes. 

E-bike riders in Minnesota may soon find out if that’s true: In May, governor Tim Waltz signed the nation’s broadest right-to-repair bill yet. Unlike in New York, Minnesota’s version of the law , which goes into effect in 2024, does not exempt e-bikes.

Lovell, of People for Bikes, said she believes the bill’s sponsors “weren’t totally aware of the issues of including e-bikes in right to repair,” and that the organization is “speaking to some of the legislators about the issue currently.” Minnesota representative and bill sponsor Peter Fischer confirmed in an email to Grist that industry advocates reached out to him after the bill became law “asking for an exemption for e-bikes.”

“I did tell the folks I am open to meeting with them and hearing what they had to say,” Fischer said. “This does not mean I would support an exemption for them.”

Wiens, from iFixit, had a stern warning for e-bike manufacturers about attempting to evade compliance with the bill. “If they get a carveout in Minnesota,” he said, “we’ll introduce five bills next year targeting them specifically. It’s unacceptable.”

For a few years, I used my phone as my bike computer and then moved to using my GPS sports watch. Five years ago, Garmin sent me an Edge 530 bike computer to evaluate and I was hooked on riding with a dedicated bike computer. For the past several days, I have had the Coros Dura attached to the front of a couple of bikes for eMTB and road cycling.

When I tested the first Coros smartwatch years ago, it stood out from the pack with its long battery life, which became a staple of the Coros branding. We have seen iconic battery life from all of the Coros smartwatches released since 2018 and that trend continues with the company's first bike computer. Coros advertises 120 consecutive hours of GPS ride time. The company suggests cyclists keep the Coros Dura mounted at all times to remove the pain point of charging their bike computer.

Given that I've only had a review unit for a few days, I have not been able to test the full battery life claim. However, I have observed about 1% of battery consumption for each hour of GPS tracking, so it seems that at least 100 hours of battery life is possible. While that length is sure to get you through any riding activity, the  Coros Dura  also supports solar charging. One hour of riding in 75,000 or more lux generates up to two hours of additional ride time.

The Coros Dura (taken from the Spanish word 'a hard thing') comes with an out-front handlebar mount with a standard quarter-turn socket. Garmin uses this same mount format so those mounts will work with the Dura, too. You can charge the device via USB-C, but solar should hopefully keep you going for virtually unlimited battery life.

Rain and radar tracking go together.

Five satellite positioning systems are supported with dual-frequency capability. ANT+, Bluetooth, and W-iFi connectivity are included, along with support for a host of sensors. I paired the Dura with my Garmin speed and cadence sensors, my Coros heart rate monitor, and even my Garmin Varia bike radar. I was impressed to see the Garmin Varia still provide vehicle traffic status moving up and down the right side of the Dura screen with colors and sounds appearing to reflect the proximity of those vehicles. 

I happened to be riding in a downpour one day and the touchscreen still worked well on the  Coros Dura  to view additional screens. As with Coros watches, you have full control over the customization of the number and data on the screens for each type of cycling, including support for e-bikes. A large scroll wheel is mounted on the right side so you can quickly spin through menus with a back/lap button positioned below this wheel. Both features are easy to manipulate as you ride and match the Coros watch approach.

The 2.7-inch memory-in-pixel display is visible while riding. There are no brightness settings, but when I ride I also do not want a brilliant AMOLED taking away from my visibility. I rode with the Dura at an MTB trail park. Unfortunately, no MTB dynamics were captured by the Dura, but the Edge 840 provided this data. It should be noted that the Garmin Edge 840 is also more than twice the price of the Dura. Coros has a long track record of software updates for its watches, so I am hopeful that we will see features like MTB dynamics eventually appear for the Dura. We should see Strava Live segments, media controls, Climb View, and more appear soon in updates.

Another benefit of the  Coros Dura  is the powerful Coros ecosystem, including a full-featured smartphone application and the Coros Training Hub website. The Dura can be customized on your smartphone and settings can be synched to the device. The data from your rides syncs via Wi-Fi to the Coros data center, so you can view your ride data, sync training plans, share data with coaches, and run reports to track your progress to your heart's delight.

I was excited when Coros teased me about the upcoming launch. Then, after attending the briefing and seeing all of the features with the extremely long battery life, I couldn't wait to try the device out. I have been very impressed with the computer so far. I need to spend much more time with training plans, syncing data with Coros watches that capture sleep and recovery stats, and exploring the navigation functions that include rerouting via Google Maps. The price of $249 blows me away and I will pick up one of these devices for myself.

Gravel riders are a primary focus of the  Coros Dura . But even if you ride on the road or explore single-track trails, there is something to like here at a low entry price. The bike alarm, crash detection, and safety alerts are also useful for keeping people informed of your cycling status. The big screen, long battery life, and Coros ecosystem make the Dura a compelling bike computer that's accessible to everyone.
