2024 Tour de Suisse Preview: How to Watch, Route, & Favorites

As the eight-day stage race honors Gino Mäder’s memory and gears up riders for the Tour de France, it offers a platform for underdogs to shine and favorites like Tom Pidcock to fine-tune their strategy.

How to Watch

What happened last year, riders to watch.

bernard hinault leading at saint gotthard pass, tour de suisse cycling race in switzerland

Race History

This is the 87th edition of the Tour de Suisse, making it one of the longest-running stage races in the world. First run in 1933, it’s skipped years for World Wars and COVID-19, but nothing else. The race is well known for its brutal (but picturesque) climbs up mountains in the Swiss Alps, like the famed Gotthard Pass.

A women’s iteration of the race was first added in the late 1990s but only existed for four years. A new women’s race was added in 2021, and this year, it will cover four stages starting June 15. (Stay tuned for How to Watch the Women’s Tour de Suisse.)

tour de suisse route

There are eight stages in the Tour de Suisse, including two individual time trials to start and finish the race. Despite two extremely short time trials, the eight stages still cover 950 kilometers of racing and a whopping 19,000 meters of elevation gain. And considering the climbing doesn’t really get going until the second half of the race, expect some extremely grueling days for climbers from Stage 4 onward. But for the first few days, it’s a time trialist and sprinter paradise, with two relatively flat stages following the initial blazingly fast time trial. And the real challenge? The final stage. Sure, it’s only 15 kilometers. But it’s also 900 meters of climbing: The stage essentially goes from the bottom to the top of a mountain.

  • Stage 1: Vaduz - Vaduz individual time trial (4.77km)
  • Stage 2: Vaduz - Regensdorf (177.3km)
  • Stage 3: Steinmaur - Rüschlikon (161.7km)
  • Stage 4: Rüschlikon - Gotthard Pass (171km)
  • Stage 5: Ambrì - Carì (148.6km)
  • Stage 6: Locarno - Blatten151.4km)
  • Stage 7: Villars-sur-Ollon - Villars-sur-Ollon118.2km)
  • Stage 8: Aigle - Villars-sur-Ollon individual time trial (15.7km)

Tour Director Olivier Senn said that this year, to win is to climb. “Only the best climbers will have a shot at overall victory. Stage wins, on the other hand, will be up for grabs for different types of riders.”

You can watch a preview of the route here:

If you’re in the US, Canada, or Australia, FloBikes ($29.99/month or $150 annually) is the best way to watch the the Tour de Suisse with all eight stages available live and on-demand on FloBikes.com , the FloSports IOS app, and the FloSports app for Amazon FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV.

The Tour de Suisse will also be televised throughout the week on Discovery+ in the UK and Europe. However, there will be no Eurosport coverage.

35th tour de l'ain 2023 stage 1

It’s impossible to talk about last year’s race without first acknowledging the tragic death of Gino Mäder , who—along with American racer Magnus Sheffield—fell off of a cliff during stage 5 while descending on the Abula Pass. Sheffield suffered a concussion, but Mäder was found submerged in water at the bottom of the ravine. The accident led to many discussions around safety measures in races with steep descents, though little has been done since then to make racing safer.

In the race itself—which was subdued in the last three stages after Mäder’s death—Trek Segafredo rider Mattias Skjelmose took the overall win. At 22 years old, he’s just slightly older than second place, the 20-year-old Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates). Tour de France favorite Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) finished in third.

This is a great race for some lesser-known talents to shine since many of the teams won’t send their big guns to a stage race this close to the Tour de France . But there are still some big guns like Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers). And with a time trial as the final stage, the racing could get interesting as riders try to create time gaps big enough that a single 15.7-kilometer time trial won’t make a major difference in the standings.

Tom Pidcock: It has to be said that Pidcock’s schedule for the next two months is wild. He’ll race Tour de Suisse, then the Crans-Montana MTB World Cup, and then hop into the Tour de France as race leader for INEOS Grenadiers, then head to the Olympics. No big deal.

Mattias Skjelmose: The Lidl-Trek rider who took the surprise win last year is back again for another attempt at a GC win.

Mark Cavendish : While Cavendish is obviously not a usual GC contender, expect to see the Astana Qazaqstan rider lighting up plenty of the sprint stages.

Stephen Küng: The Groupama-FDJ racer is one of the best time trialists out there, so with two ITT stages up for grabs, he’s definitely a contender for those wins at minimum.

Richard Carapaz : He’s won this race twice in the past, and the EF Education-EasyPost racer is likely still feeling particularly grumpy after being left off of the Olympic roster , which may give him the extra push he needs to take another victory.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your bike tour in Switzerland, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH).

You can take a train from Zurich Airport directly to Lucerne's central train station. The trip takes about one hour and 15 minutes without any transfers. Our meeting and trip hotel is situated right opposite the train station. To get more information about getting to Zurich city center or Lucerne from the airport, check out the Swiss Federal Railways' website at www.sbb.ch/en and plan your journey with public transportation.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at Hotel Continental Park (Murbacherstrasse 4, 6002 Lucerne, Switzerland) at 9:30 AM on the first day of the trip. After a round of introductions your guides will give you specific information about riding bikes in Switzerland and do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Domane or your Trek Verve+ this week. You'll then be ready to ride right from the hotel, out of Lucerne, along the lake and rolling hills, to Vitznau's boat station. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Continental Park in Lucerne (+41 41 228 90 50) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. The best way to reach our first hotel is by train.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace in Montreux at 10:15 AM. A private Trek Travel shuttle will depart from the hotel at 10:30 AM to drop you at the Place de Cornavin at Geneva's central train station from where you can easily catch a train to Geneva airport or back to Zurich or other Swiss towns, or even get an easy connection to France. The train ride from Geneva's central train station to Geneva airport takes around 10 minutes and trains run every 15 minutes. Please do not schedule a flight out of Geneva airport before 4:00 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays.

Say goodbye to your guides at the hotel at 10:30 as you board a private Trek Travel shuttle to Geneva's Cornavin Train Station. Please do not schedule a flight out of Geneva airport before 4:00 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays. Our trip has come to a conclusion; however, you may wish to arrange an extra night in Montreux since the town has so much to offer. Read More

Rider Information

Rider Level: 2, 3

Terrain: Hilly

On our Switzerland Bike Tour the terrain is rather hilly with a few punchy climbs but mostly rolling hills. We bike on dedicated bike path and bike routes, prioritising low traffic roads. While riding doesn't require any special skills, some of the climbs might get your heart-rate up. Our Switzerland Bike Tour is best suited for our Type 2 and 3 Riders. Type 4 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage and elevation that Avid options have to offer. Our Trek Travel guides can accommodate riders who seek less mileage with a boost in the van. For those eager to experience every mile but mindful of their physical limits, our electric bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution.

Daily Average

Useful information about your cycle tour in Switzerland

The swiss climate.

The climate in Switzerland is strongly influenced by the Alps, but also by the Atlantic. In winter in this country you can sometimes find arctic cold in the mountains, but the lowlands have a rather humid and mild climate. You don’t always find snow in the lowlands. From May onwards, the temperatures shoot up. Expect temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees in the summer months!

Vaduz

The Swiss cuisine

As different as the languages and weather is in Switzerland, you can of course also find different influences in Swiss cuisine. The absolute highlights and world-famous dishes certainly include the Rösti, the famous cheese fondue and of course the most popular New Year’s Eve dinner, raclette. Swiss cheese is popular all over the world, especially Emmentaler and Gruyère. But those with a sweet tooth will also get their money’s worth in Switzerland. Schweizer Schokoloade, also known as Schoggi, is a protected designation of origin.

Did you know...

  • …that in Switzerland you are never more than 16 kilometres from a lake? Because Switzerland has more than 1500 lakes! Impressive, isn’t it?
  • …that the average Swiss consumes more than 10kg of chocolate every year? No wonder, with chocolate you just can’t resist!
  • …why is Switzerland abbreviated as CH? They are the first letters of the Latin name Confoederatio Helvetica.
  • …that, strictly speaking, Switzerland does not have a head of state? The Swiss Federal President chairs the meetings of the Federal Council, which collectively performs the tasks of a President.

"Jacqui was inspirational and well-organized. Her energy was infectious and carried us through the packed tour schedule. She has a wealth of helpful information. We liked her history and geography "lessons," the vocabulary list in local languages, and the theme songs and movies she played on the bus. Overall, it was a well-organized tour, although it was a bit long and tiring.

Europamundo

"More like a hop on hop off bus depending where you get on and get off - not the usual A to B tour with the same tour guide and travellers as we thought. We had a 5-6 day trip and had 3 different coaches, 3 different tour guides and constant changes to who you are travelling with. There was no ‘group meeting’ when we arrived as we were the only ones joining the ‘group’. Very disorganised on the first day as no one explained what was happening and how it worked. Spanish is the predominant language spoken but they did eventually divide off the English speakers. Having said that all three tour guides during the 5 days were knowledgeable and directions each day were clear, accommodation and daily breakfasts were great. We would have preferred to be travelling with the same group for the duration so you could get to know people but not the case which wasn’t clear at time of booking. Lastly, when the time came to pay the balance of the tour the invoice was much more and not clear, we had to contact the Brisbane office to clear this up as we only prepared to pay brochure price so watch that.

A melting pot of culture

  • Switzerland

A melting pot of culture

Switzerland bike tours.

Get to know this country’s distinct culture and traditions through its national pastime known as “wandern.” Translated as “wandering,” it’s achieved by foot or by bike on an extensive network of well-marked and well-maintained routes and dedicated bike paths with scenic vistas and overlooks galore.

Find tours that suit your fitness levels and interests, from the looming Alps for cyclists looking for a challenge to the tame and seemingly tropical Lago Maggiore in the Ticino region to adventures through picturesque villages with wooden farmhouses and church steeples. Just remember: Cycling through the Alps is different from cycling over the Alps: many tours are not as difficult as you’d expect.

“The regional food, friendly people and amazing sights made this trip highly memorable. So many beautiful gardens, museums, monasteries, churches and castles!”

Switzerland Bike Tours

Explore switzerland on the best guided cycling tours.

Though small in size, Switzerland figures largely in the minds of outdoor enthusiasts as a must-experience destination. With towering peaks, pristine lakes, four distinct languages, and a commitment to on-time transportation, Switzerland is at once relaxed and precise.

While the country’s origins date back to the Roman era, its true emergence as a nation began in the Middle Ages. The Swiss Confederation, formed in 1291, laid the groundwork for the modern Swiss state. Over the centuries, Switzerland navigated a delicate balance of neutrality, even as surrounding countries were engulfed in wars and conflicts. This neutrality allowed Switzerland to flourish economically and cultivate its unique cultural identity.

The country is divided into four distinct language regions: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Each region boasts its own traditions, cuisine, and architecture that are best experienced by bicycle. Whether your tour begins in France, Germany, or Italy, you’ll delight in the opportunity to have your bicycle adventure include Switzerland.

Bike tours across Switzerland The Ultimate Adventure Holiday in Europe

No other week long bike tour can give you this much diversity, history and outdoor grandeur. Before anything else, Bike Switzerland.

Bike Switzerland is Switzerland’s premier bicycle tour company. Based in Geneva, Europe, our staff is made up of educators living here in Switzerland who are devoted to intercultural exchange and cycling. Given our Swiss background, our tours emphasize value, authenticity and luxury.

Our four itineraries will take cyclists on backroads to cross the entire country. We currently offer four different bicycle tours in Switzerland at three different levels: the Lite Crossing for moderate cycling, the Challenge Crossing for cyclists looking for longer days and more climbing and the Jura and Alpine tours which are road bike tours more suitable for serious cyclists.

These four itineraries can be experienced in different ways. Our guided bicycle tours offer cyclists memorable luxury accommodations in castles, monasteries, chalets and spa hotels. Guided tours allow guests to experience Swiss gourmet cuisine with catered picnics and award-winning restaurants. The guided program also offers riders a variety of experiences: wine-tasting, cheese making, breakfast on a farm, mountain hikes and village festivals. Our experienced guides know the country well and

through them our guests come to understand and appreciate the deep history and traditions that line our route. Our independent bicycle tour in Switzerland gives autonomous riders the same great accommodations, bike routes and also include daily baggage transfers, cell phones and GPS guidance. Bicycling Switzerland need not be too difficult or too expensive, and we’d like to get the word out.

…Whichever tour you choose, guests need not worry about bringing their bikes. Bike Switzerland partners with Trek Bicycles to outfit each of our riders with the perfect bicycle for exploring the Swiss backroads.

Table of Contents

Switzerland is a dream for cyclists due to its unbelievable landscapes and top-notch bike infrastructure. The country has made tons of investments to ensure residents and visitors can easily get around on two wheels. When we ventured to Switzerland ourselves, we couldn’t believe the number of bike tours in Switzerland to choose from.

From national to regional routes, there are endless opportunities for biking adventures in Switzerland. Whether you’re a novice or seasoned cyclist, Switzerland has biking routes suitable for any skill level. You can slowly coast beside crystal-clear lakes or trudge through a challenging mountain pass.

After cycling around Switzerland to witness its beauty like never before, we made a list of 5 bike tours that should top your bucket list. We’ve covered all skill levels to show you the diversity of Switzerland’s best cycling holidays. Read through our selection of routes and pack your gear for an unforgettable Switzerland bike tour.

How to get to Switzerland with your bike

Unless you’re planning on renting a bike, you may be wondering how to get your bicycle into Switzerland to start your bike tour. For those traveling from outside of Europe, flying is the only realistic option. Although it’s possible to fly with your bike, it’s time consuming and pricey to prepare it for a flight. If that’s your only choice, make sure you research the fees and packing requirements of your airline.

For our Switzerland cycling tour, we took Flixbus from the Netherlands into Basel. Fortunately, Flixbus is operating nearly everywhere across Europe, and we had no problem booking tickets. We placed our bikes on the rack at the back of the coach and enjoyed the ride to Switzerland.

Flixbus Cycling trip

It’s also possible to take your bike on the train and coast along the European countryside. Switzerland trains accommodate cyclists by allowing you to bring your bike onboard and across the border. SBB offers an international bike ticket that lets you transport your bike through numerous European countries. Check out this link for bike storage info on other European trains.

Of course, you can easily use your car to travel to Switzerland from other European countries. Our advice would be to compare petrol and toll costs of driving to Switzerland from your location versus plane/bus/train tickets.

Where to stay while biking in Switzerland

Camping Switzerland

For adventurous travelers who are often on a tight budget, camping is your best option while cycling around Switzerland. There are hundreds of clean, well-equipped campsites in the Swiss countryside and near major cities. We loved sleeping beneath the stars and waking up beside alpine lakes and snow-capped peaks made our trip even better.

Just know that wild (free) camping in Switzerland is only allowed in the mountains above the treeline. You won’t reach these areas often while bike touring around Switzerland, and you’ll need to stick with mostly paid campsites. For one night at a campsite with a tent and +1 person, the average cost is about CHF 20-25 (about $22-27.50, €19-23.50, £17-21).

Our favorite Switzerland bike tours

1. bodensee (lake constance) round trip.

Lake Constance Switzerland Bike Tours

  • Distance: 270 km (about 168 miles)
  • Difficulty: Medium
  •   Ascent & Descent: 672m Ascent & 671m Descent

The Bodensee bike tour is one of Europe’s classic tours that follows the banks of this oddly-shaped lake. As the third-largest lake in central Europe, Bodensee gives you lots of opportunities to cycle around European towns and scenic countryside. In total, the lakeside path takes you to parts of Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.

Bodensee is wildly popular amongst European cyclists for its stunning views of the lake and limited inclines. The path mostly follows the banks of the lake, and the signage varies considerably depending on the country. Although the signposts are near perfect in Switzerland, parts of Germany and Austria can be tricky.

While cycling in each country, you’ll ride through historic towns, see gorgeous mountain vistas, and coast through picturesque farmland. There are slight challenges at the Bodanrück hills and Schiener Berg on the Höri peninsula, but the other sections are suitable for all skill levels.

The trip is usually divided into 4-7 stages, and you won’t have any difficulty finding campsites and other accommodations near the lake. Many campgrounds are located by the shoreline and provide beautiful views of the alps in the distance. Some of the towns you’ll pass include Kreuzlingen, Romanshorn, Arbon, Bregenz (Austria), Friedrichshafen (Germany), Überlingen (Germany), Stein am Rhein, and Konstanz (Germany).

You really need to check out this link: Interesting facts about the lake Constance cycle path

2. Lake Geneva Round Trip

Lake Geneva - Bike Tours Switzerland

  • Distance: 190 km (about 118 miles)
  • Ascent & Descent: 1,677m Ascent & 1,677m Descent

Biking around Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) lets you explore beautiful regions of France and Switzerland with the Alps and Jura Mountains as your backdrop. Bike tour 46 (Tour du Léman) transports you around the largest natural lake in the Alps and along scenic roads in the countryside. The regional route doesn’t include many strenuous inclines, and most sections are suitable for riders of all skill levels.

To stay closer to the shoreline and farther away from road traffic, cycle around the lake clockwise. You can also alter your bike tour by hitching rides on the Swiss train for stunning views of snow-capped peaks. Part of this adventure around Lake Geneva wanders into bustling urban centers, but you’ll have plenty of time riding through tranquil, rural areas.

As you pedal along the shoreline, it’s incredible how the mountains reflect on the water’s surface. In between tourist hotspots like Geneva and the Vaud Riviera, you’ll cycle past beautiful vineyards and unspoiled nature reserves. Cycling the slopes of La Côte will require some effort but reaching the peaceful Grangettes Nature Reserve is worth it.

This bike route in Switzerland can easily be broken into stages, and there’s no shortage of camping sites on both sides of the Lake Geneva border. You’ll save a few bucks camping on the French side, but all campgrounds on the shoreline have great amenities. If you wish to spend a few days in the city, Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, and Thonon-les-Bains (France) have lots of accommodations.

3. 3 Lakes Tour

lakes of Neuchâtel tours Bike Switzerland

  • Distance: 162 km (about 101 miles)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Ascent & Descent: 397m Ascent & 397m Descent

For first-time cyclists, the 3 Lakes Tour offers exceptional lakeside views on flat terrain for an enjoyable vacation. The lakes of Neuchâtel, Murten, and Biel rest in the Jura region of Switzerland, and the bike route ventures into tiny villages and small towns. For a base location to prep your journey, the capital city of Bern is around 30 km from Lake Murten.

The route has very few inclines and lets you coast along serene country roads by the lakes. You’ll also pass spectacular views of the Jura Mountains, vineyard landscapes, tranquil forests, and lush marshlands. Lake Neuchâtel is the largest lake entirely in Switzerland, and its southern shore is not far from a pristine bird habitat.

Most campsites and accommodations are situated around Lake Neuchâtel, but you’ll also find campgrounds on the shores of Lake Biel and Murten. The 3 Lakes region is highlighted by many historic towns rich with medieval sites. Yverdon-les-Bains, Neuchâtel, Biel/Bienne, and Estavayer are popular options to spend the night while touring the 3 lakes.

Check out this link: Map – 3 lakes bike tour in Switzerland

4. National Route 9

lakes of Neuchâtel tours Bike Switzerland Route 9 Bike tours Switzerland

  • Distance: 510 km (around 317 miles)
  • Ascent & Descent: 6,100m Ascent & 6,100m Descent

National Cycling Route 9 is the longest of the nine national cycling routes in Switzerland and cuts through the heart of the Swiss countryside. Known as the Lakes Route, the journey stretches from Bodensee to Lake Geneva and passes 10 other lakes in between. Some of the enchanting lakes you ride by include Lake Zug, Lake Ägeri, Lake Zurich, and Lake Lucerne.

Although the inclines aren’t as treacherous compared to other routes, you will face several uphill climbs and mountain passes. The alpine beauty you witness throughout the ride make the ascents totally worth it. If you do need a little boost, you can always take the train uphill and race downhill on your bike.

In addition to mountain and lakeside vistas, this bike tour in Swizerlands lets you visit and spend the night at some of Switzerland’s charming cities. You can begin the trip in either Montreux or Rorschach, and visit popular places like Gstaad, Gruyères, and Luzern. This route is fantastic for camping beside lakes or beneath alpine vistas that Switzerland is known for.

5. Round Trip Switzerland (National Route 7-2-1)

Cycling Switzerland

  • Total Distance: 1,065 km (about 662 miles)
  • Difficulty: Medium-Difficult
  • Ascent & Descent: Route 7 (5,400m Ascent & 5,200m Descent) Route 2 (3,600m Ascent & 4,800m Descent) Route 1 (3,600m Ascent & 4,600m Descent)

If you have a few weeks for your Switzerland bike tour, consider traveling around the entire country by bike. For our cycling holiday, we used National Routes 7, 2, and 1 for a round trip across Switzerland. The itinerary combined the Jura, Rhine, and Rhone routes to explore famous Swiss towns, breathtaking mountain scenery, and sparkling lakes.

The landscape diversity was off the charts, and we saw for ourselves why Switzerland is one of European’s most beloved destinations. From evergreen forests and peaceful valleys to gushing waterfalls and snow-capped peaks, this route had hundreds of postcard-worthy images. For experienced cyclists, National Route 7-2-1 receives our highest praise for an adventurous vacation.

Switzerland Cycling

T he natural beauty of Switzerland is not taken for granted by the Swiss, and because of their respect for their nature, they have designed and maintained a very sophisticated system of hiking and cycling routes throughout the country.

Starting in the German-speaking cantons of Lucerne, on the shores of Lake Lucerne, we begin our journey across Switzerland, passing through many quaint Medieval town centers. We’ll pass through the cantons of Lucerne, Oberwald, Berner Oberland, and Bern as we continue through the valley and lake regions surrounded by Switzerland’s majestic “Alps”.

Our two night stay in the small but bustling capital city of Bern, still has many activities waiting for us. We’ll then continue on and get absorbed into the French-speaking cantons of Fribourg and Vaud and… voilá, begin speaking French. After an overnight in the Quaint castle village of Guyrères, famous for her cheese, we’ll head over the hills of Jorat, overlooking the entire Lake Léman (Lake Geneva) backdropped by the snowcapped Alps, and finish our journey with a spectacular descent through the beautiful Unesco protected wine terraces of Lavaux, straight down to the lively lakeside town of Morges.

The tour passes through eight of Switzerland’s 26 cantons and provides you with unmatched natural beauty, insight into the political and historical foundations, and an up close and authentic experience of Swiss contemporary culture. Because most of this tour is on bicycle paths or designated bike routes, we are not only utilizing, but also contributing to the sustainability of the Swiss philosophy of human-powered travel. We are excited to be guest/hosts in this beautiful country as ambassadors to help promote this way of life.

Astana - Mark Cavendish in Tour of Suisse mainly to sharpen climbing form

Team manager Alexander Vinokourov says building for Tour de France mountain stages the priority

Mark Cavendish

Mark Cavendish has known significant success in the Tour de Suisse in his career, but this time round the British sprinter will be primarily looking to build his climbing form for the Tour de france, says Astana Qazaqstan team manager Alexander Vinokourov.

Cavendish will start the Tour de Suisse on Sunday alongside various key elements of his sprint train including leadout men Michael Morkov and Cees Bol .

However, on an ultra-mountainous eight-day race with only two stages with even a minimal possibility of a bunch sprint, Astana will not be expecting the Briton to target them as his key goals next week.

The Tour de Suisse starts Sunday with a 4.7 kilometre time trial.  Stage 2 and 3 could end in bunch sprints, but although Astana are not ruling out going for them with Cavendish by any means, their flat finishes are closely preceded by cat. 3 climbs, likely splitting the peloton. Stages four through to eight are all major summit finishes, with Sunday’s showdown stage an uphill time trial.

“Mark is doing very well in training, but the first week of the Tour de France is already very mountainous, so we want him to be in as good a climbing shape as possible,” team manager Alexander Vinokourov told Cyclingnews on Friday.

“We want the whole Tour team to test themselves in that area.”

Cavendish and the other riders likely selected for the Tour have just come off a three week altitude training camp, Vinokourov said, which went very well. “They’re in good health and motivated and that’s the most important thing.”

In the Tour de Suisse, “If they can over the climbs for the sprints, great. If not, then it’s training for the mountains.”

“They’ve done a great training camp too, and in three weeks time we’ll see the benefits of that.”

Cavendish has taken two wins this year, one in the TourColombia in the early season, and another, more recently in the Tour de Hongrie “and that’s great for everybody, it’s extra motivation,” says Vinokourov.

Astana Qazaqstan have already had some notable success this week, with Nicolas Vinokourov, son of Alexander, securing the U-23 TT title in the Asian Road Championships, giving the team a welcome morale boost as it heads towards the key dates of the summer.

The definitive lineup of team for the Tour de France will be decided after the Tour de Suisse, Vinokourov said. “We’ve already got seven guys in the roster for sure, right now it’s just a question of the last name.”

8 best cycling routes in Switzerland (+ the 8 best climbs)

Kudos Cycling logo

Cycling in Switzerland remains something of a mystery to those of us who have not yet visited this fabled cycling paradise.

We know Cancellara is Swiss, we know there are huge mountains and Swiss engineered roads, but where to start planning a trip? What are the best cycling routes in Switzerland?

Here we put that very question to Anthony Walker, a Brit who has called Verbier, in the Valais region of Switzerland, home since 2014. He and his partner run Kudos Cycling , specialising in road cycling trips from Verbier.

Switzerland’s best cycling routes

Since Anthony is based in the Valais, this is an intentionally Valais-centric view of the best Switzerland cycling routes (though we do venture into the neighbouring regions of Vaud, Uri, Ticino and Bern).

This south-western area of Switzerland is home to most of the country’s most famous passes and riding. The Valais focus also means you’ll get a great idea of the kind of cycling you can expect if you visit on a single centre stay.

Introduction to road cycling Switzerland’s Valais region

Cycling in Valais is one of the best kept secrets in cycling. The region has a stunning variety of cycling terrain available, from undulating vineyards to high alpine cols. There’s something for everyone.

You’ll find quieter roads compared to some of the better known European cycling locations; you can expect stunning views, beautiful lakes and challenging gradients.

The Valais region (or canton, as they’re known in Switzerland) boasts a rich heritage of cycling and is filled with iconic mountain passes. It hosts some of the most recognised sportives in the world including the Tour des Station or the Gran Fondo Valais depending on the distance, Haute Route Crans-Montana, the Alpen Brevet and the Gran Fondo Switzerland based in Villars, Vaud. It has truly become the home of Swiss cycling with its unique location bordering France and Italy, both of which are accessible in a single day.

Map of switzerland

What is the Valais like?

The region of Valais is a popular destination for winter skiing enthusiasts; you may be familiar with the famous resorts of Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Crans-Montana in the Valais region.

The valley floor sees the glacial melt water of the River Rhone flowing through the valley into Lake Geneva which creates the ideal growing conditions for the vineyards and orchards full of the famous apricot and pear trees. The region has its own microclimate and is the sunniest region in Switzerland which also makes it an amazing cycling destination.

With flat valley rides or steep climbs through vineyards, forests and open alpine meadows with cow bells ringing and snow capped peaks, it is a cycling paradise just for the variety of the terrain.

8 best cycling climbs in Switzerland

Switzerland isn’t that high on many cyclist’s must-visit lists, probably due to the fact the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia hog the limelight.

Switzerland’s climbs are less well known than others in Europe but that doesn’t mean they are less impressive; I always think they’re for the connoisseur cyclist, the one whose likely already visited the French Alps and Pyrenees and is now looking for new mountain passes to test themselves against.

That said, the region of Valais has seen the Tour de France visit on three occasions over the years and again in 2022. The Giro d’Italia uses the famous Swiss climbs, the Grand St Bernard in particular. In 2023, the Giro d’Italia makes a return to Valais, Switzerland. A huge day sees the riders cycle up through Verbier and Croix de Coeur (15km with a 1350m vertical gain) at an altitude over 2,000m. The stage finishes in the ski resort of Crans Montana further down the valley where riders have 22km of descent to recover.

The Tour de Suisse and Tour de Romandie also make annual visits. A good opportunity for pro teams to see who will be challenging for the Tour de France.

But the best cycling climbs in Switzerland are ones you haven’t heard of.

Within 50 kilometres of Verbier

1. barrage du mauvoison, valais region – 1,841m.

A local favourite. A dead-end road to the top of the dam, the route is the best of what cycling through Switzerland has to offer: snow-capped peaks, dramatic landscapes and quiet roads. Expect to see lots of nature on this route.

2. Emosson Dam, Valais region – 1,956m

The finish of the 2016 Tour du France. The names of local cycling legends and heroes can still be seen graffitied on the road. Incredible views of Mont Blanc all the way to the summit of this challenging route. The climb from the historic Roman town of Martigny was also meant to be part of the UCI World Road Cycling Championships in 2020, which was cancelled. This route below incorporates the climb.

3. Col du Sanetsch, Valais region – 2,242m

A dead-end road to the summit makes it a quieter road than some of the more well known French or Italian equivalents. It’s a stunning climb with 27km of ascent from the valley floor. Add in a cable car ride from the top down to Gstaad and this loop is a must (more info on the loop below ).

4. Col du Grand St Bernard, Valais region – 2,469m

The third highest paved road in Switzerland and steeped in history. The Col du Grand Saint Bernard is one of the highest cycling cols in the Alps at 2,469 metres (8,100 feet). It’s also one of the longest at 45kms from the Swiss side. It featured in the 2009 Tour de France and has been used by the Giro d’Italia.   This route below incorporates the climb.

Further afield

5. col de la croix, vaud region – 1,778m.

A beautiful climb that starts in the vineyards and climbs through small villages and the ski resort of Villars. A popular Tour du Romandie climb. Part of a number of great loop options in this region of Vaud. In 2022, Villars hosted a stage of the Tour de France. It is also the base for the Gran Fondo Switzerland.   This route below incorporates the climb.

6. Grimsel Pass, Valais/Bern border – 2,164m

The Grimsel Pass is a classic, high alpine cycling pass, one of many incredible climbs in this region of Switzerland. It featured in the 2007 Tour de Suisse as a mountain top finish at Stage 7, on June 22, 2007.

Starting in the town of Meiringen, famous for its connections with Sherlock Holmes, the climb to the summit is a steady 32km and 1,693m metres at an average of 5.8% of incredible wild scenery and rugged terrain. You can avoid the tunnels with small side roads cut into the rocks. At the summit, you’ll be greeted with high lakes and a nice restaurant for a coffee. To finish the climb off do the 7km descent to Gletsch in the Canton of Valais, for 6 incredible switchbacks.

This route below incorporates the climb.

7. Nufenen Pass, Valais/Ticino border – 2,478m

The second highest mountain pass road in Switzerland. A punishing and spectacular climb, part of the best 100km loop in Europe as voted for by Cycling Plus magazine. It’s a tough start before the road flattens off and the valley opens up revealing the snaking pass to the summit ahead of you.

8. Furka Pass, Valais/Uri border – 2,429m

The fourth highest paved mountain pass in Switzerland and the scene of the James Bond movie Goldfinger. It’s also the start of the River Rhone glacial meltwater. You will be surrounded by incredible scenery with gorgeous views of the impressive Grimsel Pass snaking its way to the top for the pass. A photo on the iconic corner with the famous closed Hotel Belvedere is a must. The climb is gradual and the road surface well maintained.

8 best cycling routes in Switzerland

Switzerland offers an incredible amount of variety for cyclists.

From a cycling tour of Switzerland using the well signposted cycling network, to staying in one location and exploring the local region, there is plenty of choice for all cycling abilities. However, if you want to explore Switzerland’s mountain passes, strong road cyclists will have the most fun; there’s a lot of climbing around here! That said, if you want/need a bit of extra gas, you can always consider hiring an e-bike to help you up the mountains.

1. Col de la Croix Loop

Col de la Croix is a stunning climb that isn’t too difficult but you are rewarded with amazing views at the top. Part of a couple of many great loops.

The Col de la Croix is a 22km climb starting from the valley to the top of the col at 1,778m with an altitude gain of 1,333m.

The ride is steady, the hardest part is climbing the steep sections out of the valley floor through the vineyards.

The road passes through charming villages where you can stop and grab a drink and enjoy the views. As you enter the ski resort of Villars, the road is quieter and more forgiving with sections of 1% where you can enjoy the breathtaking views. The descent to the ski resort Les Diablerets is a fast descent which continues to the valley floor.

This is an exhilarating up and down route.

How to ride it with Kudos Cycling

This route can be included in a 3 or 5-day Switzerland cycling tour for those whose fitness is of a good level. The sort of package we offer can be found  here , but the specific routes will depend on what climbs you want to do and in which region.

2. Emosson Dam

Following in the wheels of your Tour de France heroes, the road to the dam has two mountain passes to conquer, the Col de la Forclaz at 1,528m and the Col de la Gueulaz 1,956m.

A route with Tour de France history and for good reason!

The Emosson Dam was the finish of one of the stages of the 2016 Tour de France.

From the Roman town of Martigny, the route starts in the vineyards with two options, the classic gradual road following the Tour de France or the steep road earmarked for the 2020 UCI World Road Cycling Championships (that never happened due to Covid-19), towards the Col de la Forclaz.

There’s a short descent before a climb up the Col de la Gueulaz and the Emosson Dam, also famous for the dinosaur tracks imprinted into the rocks. The landscape becomes wild and the road is unrelenting to the top of the Col. From the top, views over Mont Blanc and the Aiguilles du Tour are breathtaking.

It’s back the same way to Martigny on the main Col du Forclaz road.

This route can be included in a 3 or 5-day Switzerland bike tour for those staying in Valais. It can be used on our Alpine Cycle Training packages or bespoke tours.

The sort of package we offer can be found here , but the specific routes will depend on what climbs you want to do and in which region.

3. Grosse Scheidegg loop

In my opinion, this is the greatest Alpine cycling climb; riding your bike in the Alps doesn’t get any better than this. Waterfalls, cows, lakes and snow capped mountains. This ride has them all.

The Jungfrau region is not a well known cycling destination, but it is home to the Grosse Scheidegg, the climb which ticks every cyclist’s wish list. Car free road apart from the iconic Swiss yellow Post Horn public bus, waterfalls, incredible views of snow capped mountains and glaciers dominated by the famous Eiger North Face, endless cows and a couple of coffee stops along the way.

It is also quite steep!

A long descent from the top through the ski resort of Grindelwald towards the shores of Interlaken and Brienz back to Meiringen and the home of Sherlock Holmes.

Part of a bespoke 3 day or 5 day Switzerland cycling holiday which would include some of the best Swiss climbs in the area.

Cyclist through a rock tunnel on a cycling route in Switzerland

4. Col du Grand St Bernard

This is an iconic cycle ride to the summit with the last 6-7km providing a tough challenge. It’s a high alpine pass where the altitude is as much of a challenge as the gradient. With so much attached history it should be on your must-do list.

High and long, the route only gets really tough for the last 7km where it ramps up to 8%. The last section is off the main road so you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery which is wild.

At the summit you roll into Italy for a proper Italian coffee or descend a bit further and visit a refugio.

Take some warm clothes for the descent and a rear light for the tunnels just to be on the safe side.

Staying in Verbier or Le Chable, this route is an ideal part of a family weekend package/cycling holiday in Switzerland.

5. Derborence

A beautiful ride through a natural paradise. A personal favourite.

A quiet dead end road to a naturally formed glacial lake along a road with a series of tunnels cut into the rock offers another incredible cycling experience.

An easy start along the valley floor through the vineyards and wine caves that make this region so special. The route ramps up but is short and steep before the incredible road through tunnels carved out of the rock. The valley opens up with an easy climb to the glacial lake of Lac de Derborence.

Part of a bespoke 3 day or 5 day bike tour of Switzerland which would include some of the best Swiss climbs in the area.

6. Nufenen Pass, San Gottardo and Furka Pass Loop

The best 100km loop in Europe. A stunning cycling loop that typifies cycling in Switzerland.

Starting from Ulrichen the climb starts immediately. The Nufenen Pass has a punishing average of 8.5% with a series of hairpins snaking up towards the summit. It is short and sharp, made harder with the altitude.

Prepare for all weather conditions!

The long descent towards Airolo and the incredible bucket list climb of the famous cobbles of the San Gottardo pass, a Swiss monument.

There’s a little time to relax before the Furka Pass, and a nod to James Bond Street, the filming location of the James Bond classic Goldfinger in 1964. A beautiful descent to the start is your reward for all the climbing.

You can ride this as part of the Gran Fondo San Gottardo sportive or a bespoke tour. This is the link to our San Gottardo trip . If you have any events planned that need serious altitude training, having a training camp based here would be ideal.

7. Col du Sanetsch loop

One of the finest and most demanding road cycling routes in Switzerland’s Valais. An incredible loop that has everything a cyclist would wish for.

Covering a total elevation gain of 2,450m, the Col du Sanetsch route is testing but beautiful.

Starting off in the valley floor through the vineyards, the road winds its way through the larch and spruce forests before opening up to the cow-filled alpine pastures. With cow bells tolling and sights and smells of forests and meadows, you won’t notice the road climbing up towards the Tsanfleuron glacier.

Your efforts are rewarded with incredible views of the Rhône valley and snow-capped peaks. From here the adventure starts with a small cable car down to Gsteig, a small village.

There’s then a short climb up the Col du Pillon at the cable car up to Glacier 3000.

Enjoy a long descent through the ski resort of Les Diablerets towards Aigle, home to the UCI headquarters. Then it’s along the valley floor back to the start. Depending on the direction of the wind, the train is also an option.

This route can be included in a 3 or 5-day cycling tour in Switzerland for those whose fitness is of a good level and can be part of a bespoke trip.

8. Furka Pass, Susten Pass and Grimsel Pass loop

Taking in the Furka Pass, Susten Pass and Grimsel Pass, the most impressive passes in Switzerland. Long climbs, high mountain passes, with incredible Swiss engineering that makes cycling in Switzerland so special.

An incredible Triple Crown of high mountain passes to challenge anyone. The route includes three of the best climbs that can be experienced in Switzerland.

The route can be used as a one day loop or over two days depending on the fitness of the group. It can also be part of other local climbs to create an incredible few days of climbing the best road cycling climbs Switzerland has to offer.

You can ride this as part of the Gran Fondo San Gottardo sportive or a bespoke tour. If you have any events planned that need serious altitude training, having a training camp based in this part of Switzerland would be ideal – and with so many other epic Swiss passes nearby it is a must do.

Other notable routes

Swiss national bike routes/eurovelo routes.

The Swiss National Routes are the national cycling route network of Switzerland. There are currently nine such long-distance cycling routes criss-crossing the Swiss nation and these were established mainly to promote biking in Switzerland and bicycle tourism.

Like Eurovelo routes, the cycle routes are signposted with red signposts and can be found on the My Switzerland website or the Swiss Mobility app .

National Bike Routes through the Valais region

The Rhone Route runs through the magnificent mountain scenery of the Valais on charming, quiet paths along the Rhone.

It leads along the famous palm-lined promenades of Lake Geneva and the picturesque Lavaux vineyards and ends at cosmopolitan Genève.

The first stage from Andermatt over the Furka Pass to Goms is a tough one.

That’s why leisure cyclists would be better advised to start in Oberwald and follow the Rhone through the sun-drenched high valley. The route then continues down towards Brig with its Stockalper Castle.

The Rhone brushes the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, the wine-growing village of Salgesch, the castles of Sion and leads along Lake Geneva’s promenade of palm trees, past the vineyards in the UNESCO World Heritage Property of Lavaux until it ends in the cosmopolitan city of Geneva or continues as Euro Cycle Route 17 to the Mediterranean.

Tourist highlights

  • Furka Pass/Belvédère, walk to the Rhone glacier and its source
  • Brig, Stockalper Palace dating from the 17th century
  • St. Maurice, the oldest monastery in the Abendland (1,500 years)
  • Lavaux, the vineyard terraces of the UNESCO World Heritage Property
  • Geneva, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum

Do you recommend the National Bike Routes?

The routes are well signed, there are often fantastic views and if you are looking for an adventure on your bicycle to explore Switzerland I would highly recommend these routes.

Some of the routes use natural surfaces so it is worth planning ahead and being aware of this to avoid any surprises! You can usually plan to avoid these sections.

Gravel cyclist in Switzerland

Gravel cycling in Switzerland

Gravel biking is hugely popular at the moment and for very good reason.

If you are feeling adventurous and you would like to try some gravel rides on quiet gravel roads to incredible remote places, we offer a number of different packages based from Valais, Switzerland.

From point to point tours to staying in one location and experiencing local gravel routes make for more of a relaxing experience.

Practical information on cycling Switzerland

What are the best town(s) for single centre bases switzerland cycling holidays.

The “best” depends on what kind of experience you would like and if you are travelling with family.

The towns and villages of Valais have been influenced by the Romans with old Castles and ruins such as Martigny or Sion, the capital of the region of Valais. They are convenient to get to from Geneva Airport by road or by car with cycling routes in every direction.

The ski resorts of Verbier or Crans-Montana offer plenty of activities for non-cyclists and are fun destinations to stay.

Why do you love Switzerland?

Switzerland offers so much variety for activities during the year, and being an outdoor person, it suits me!

From skiing in the winter to hiking and biking in the summer. It was the winter sports that originally brought me to Switzerland but the summers that made me stay. The seasons are so pronounced it is an amazing place to call home.

What should we eat while in Switzerland?

The local regions each have their own food speciality and, as you can imagine, cheese and chocolate are high up on the list. Whether that is cheese fondue, raclette or rosti, you have definitely earned it after riding here!

How do you get to Switzerland?

Geneva or Zurich are the best airports. From here it is easy to hire a car or use the incredible bicycle friendly train network.

Visma | Lease a Bike brings back trio for Tour of Switzerland and aims to "contend for the final podium" with protected trio

I n the Critérium du Dauphiné, they may be falling like flies, but in the Tour of Switzerland, Visma | Lease a Bike is fortunate to be able to open a fresh can of riders. The Dutch team welcomes back Cian Uijtdebroeks, Robert Gesink, and Wilco Kelderman after overcoming illnesses and injuries.

Gesink had to withdraw from the Giro d'Italia on the first day after a fall that resulted in a minor hand fracture. Uijtdebroeks, although not injured, had to halt his ambitions for a high overall Giro classification when he fell ill after the first rest day, later diagnosed, as he tells Het Nieuwsblad , with pneumonia. Kelderman had been off the radar for a while after breaking his collarbone in the final turn of Paris-Nice, causing him to miss the Giro d'Italia.

Visma | Lease a Bike recently saw the trio cycling in good condition, and thus, they are slated to compete in the Tour of Switzerland. Ben Tulett, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Attila Valter, and Milan Vader will also be at the start line for the prologue on Sunday. Uijtdebroeks appears to be the man for a strong overall finish in the GC, although it's uncertain how well he has recovered from the Giro. "Luckily, I'm feeling well now. It was quite a disappointment. I was riding with a good feeling in the Giro. Despite the route in the first part not being suited to me, everything was going according to plan. We all thought the best was yet to come. Unfortunately, you can never completely avoid illness."

Read more below the photo .

Visma | Lease a Bike aims for the podium in Switzerland

After a period of rest—during which he painfully watched the Giro d'Italia on TV—Uijtdebroeks trained at altitude in Andorra. "I had to take it easy during the first few days there as I was still experiencing issues with my lungs. After that, I made progress day by day. I am now back to a good level. The plan now is to rest for a few days and then I hope to perform strongly in Switzerland. Of course, I aim for the highest possible ranking in the Tour of Switzerland, but it is primarily also a test to see where I currently stand. I hope to reach a high level."

The young Belgian reveals that Kelderman and Tulett also have 'protected status' in the eight-day stage race. Visma | Lease a Bike thus has three cards to play, says team director Marc Reef in a press release. "We have a very strong team overall. Cian needed some time to recover but has been able to train well in recent weeks. Wilco, Ben, and Johannes also had a successful training camp in Sierra Nevada, which was primarily aimed at this race. We start without a pronounced leader, but with several key players. Ultimately, we do have the ambition to contend for the final podium."

One half of the Tour de France favourites spent the previous week at the Critérium du Dauphiné testing their legs, now it's time for the other half to flex theirs at the Tour de Suisse. The eight stage race covers almost 1,000 kilometres and climbs 18,000 metres as it crosses the mountainous country which provides the perfect stage to see who's form is building nicely.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch the Tour de Suisse 2024 live streams from anywhere with a VPN , and potentially for free .

Tour de Suisse 2024 2024 live streams will be available Sunday, June 9 – Sunday, June 16. Start times vary. • FREE STREAMS — Watch on SRF (Switzerland), •  U.S. — Watch on FloBikes •   Canada — Watch on FloBikes •   U.K. — Watch on Discovery Plus • Watch anywhere — Try NordVPN risk-free

With no Tadej Pogačar on the start sheet as he prepares at altitude and no Jonas Vingegaard as he continues to recover from injury the role of favourite rests on the shoulders of 2023 winner Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl - Trek). Although he's had a quiet season he will be keen to repeat last year's breakthrough victory in the Swiss Alps and reconfirm his place at cycling's top table.

Going up against him with be the three pronged attack of Tom Pidcock, Egan Bernal and Jhonatan Narvaez of the INEOS Grenadiers with all eyes on Pidcock especially as he starts his serious attempt to be a stage race winner. Groupama - FDJ will be headed up by the young sensation Lenny Martinez and Israel - Premier Tech by the winner of this year's Fleche Wallonne , Stephen Williams.

Of those here to hunt stages and not chase overall victory look out for the likes of Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain - Victorious) and the local hero Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates).

Coming just two weeks before the Tour de France the tension will be building and with many teams still to announce their squads every rider on every team will be treating the race as an audition to appear on the grand stage in July.

Tour de Suisse 2024 stages

The 2024 Tour de Suisse kicks off with a 4.8km prologue in the town of Vaduz to implement a GC order right from day one. After this brief yet intense beginning the following day sees the riders face a lumpy 177 kilometre journey from Vaduz to Regensdorf which although featuring three classified climbs is more then likely to finish in a bunch sprint.

Those sprinters who miss out on stage two will have another chance on stage three at the finish in Rüschlikon, but with multiple short sharp ascents in the final kilometres they could be foiled by a late break away.

Stage four is where the real action starts with the race finishing at the top of the world famous Gotthardpass. With almost 30 kilometres uphill the teams of the favourites will have to make sure their leaders are well placed to make their mark at the summit.

Stage five from Ambri to Cari features the second summit finish in two days with an even more testing finish than the day before, then stage six sees the first HC climb of the race. The 151 kilometres from Locarno to Blatten are dominated by the colossal Nufenenpass, but coming 60 kilometres from the end can it be decisive?

Yet more mountains and yet another summit finish are on the cards on stage seven around Villars-sur-Ollon as the race crosses the same two mountains twice on a giant loop in and out of the town.

The final stage like the first is a time trial. This time a longer test at 15.7 kilometres anyone hoping to gain time will have one last chance.
