Kutralam – The Land Of Majestic Waterfalls & Healing Waters

kutralam to kerala tourist places

Nestled in the scenic Western Ghats, Kutralam (குற்றாலம்) is a popular tourist destination of South Tamil Nadu . Courtallam or Kutralam is a town situated at a height of 160 m (520 ft) above sea level in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India. The very name of the place has become synonymous with the thundering waterfalls that flow here. It is also home to centuries old ancient temples and other famous places of interest. Several seasonal and perennial rivers such as Thamirabarani, Manimuthar , Pachaiyar and Chittar originate in this lush region.

The title “Spa of South India” fits perfectly for Kutralam due to the numerous magnificent waterfalls and the healing and medicinal properties of the water that flows here. This has led to the rise of numerous health resorts in and around this quaint town. The falls do not flow throughout the year and are highly dependent on rainfall. They carry substantial amounts of water when the rivers feeding the falls receive heavy rain. The best time to visit Kutralam is from June to September , when the South West Monsoon kicks off in the nearby state of Kerala. People are not allowed to bathe when the falls are flooded due to heavy rainfall.

Aerial view of the Kutralam falls

Other Names of Kutralam over the Ages Kutralam is also known as “Ooty for the poor” due to its excellent climate that resembles the popular hill station Ooty throughout the year. This “Spa of South Tamil Nadu” is also known as Mukthiveli, Nannagaram, Pithur Kanda, Theerthapuram, Thirunagaram and Vasanthaperur.

In Tamil the word, “Kuru aal (குறு ஆல்)” denotes a dwarf banyan tree. Since the forests of this area were full of such dwarf banyan trees, the region came to be known as Kutralam.

Mention in Ancient Tamil Literature

Mention of Kutralam falls in ancient Tamil literature

In the ancient Tamil Literature, “Kutrala Kuravanji” (திருக்குற்றாலக் குறவஞ்சி), the famous Tamil Poet “Thiurkudarasappa Kavirayar” glorifies the beauty and magnificence of this town located in the South of Tamil Nadu near Tenkasi. He has composed songs on Kutralanathar and sings in praise of his love and affection for the Lord and the place.

During the ancient Sangam period, this town was known as “Thenoor (தேனூர்)”. In Sangam literature , the natural beauty of this place is compared to the beauty of a woman. Kutralam has occupied a place in history as a scenic destination since ancient times.

Geographical Location Tucked in the foothills of Agasthiyamalai, an off-shoot of the Majestic Western Ghats, Kutralam is a pristine town that is untainted by the industrial developments of other popular tourist destinations. The mountain ranges of Agasthiyamalai are named after the popular sage Agasthya ( அகத்தியர்) , one of the Saptarishis and the earliest Sidhar, is believed to have lived in this area. The nearest railway station is at the town of Tenkasi which lies at a distance of 5kms from here. The nearest airport is at Tuticorin at a distance of 90kms from here.

Popular Legends Surrounding Kutralam Kutralam is the focal point of several folktales and mythological legends spun around it. Several inscriptions in the temples here describe the reign of Chola and Pandya kings who ruled over this area. A very popular folktale goes like this. To witness the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, all the other Gods and Goddesses conglomerated in the Himalayas. This caused a tilt in the Earth’s axis and Lord Shiva, ordered Sage Agastya to go to the South to restore the balance of Mother Earth. Sage Agastya was promised a divine vision of the holy wedding by Lord Shiva. It is believed that Sage Agastya created the Shivalinga at this temple from an image of Lord Vishnu and hence the name Kutralam.

The Enchanting Kutralam Falls

The waterfalls in Kutralam are known far and wide for their healing powers. The rivers that feed these falls flow thorough uninhabited forests filled with Ayurvedic plants and herbs . The water accumulates the essence of these herbs and taking a shower in these falls is believed to cure all chronic aches and pains. People visit this town from all over India to shower in the refreshing and rejuvenating waters of Kutralam falls. There are nine major waterfalls in Kutralam.

1. Main Falls (Peraruvi)

Front view of the Kutralam main falls

It is the biggest waterfall in all of Kutralam and is about 60m in height. The flow of the water is interrupted by a natural crater, Pongumakadal which is 19m deep. This crater reduces the impact of the water flow and the speed of the water is reduced, thereby making it safe for bathing. It is advised to drink a few mouthfuls of the water while bathing as the water is believed to have medicinal properties. The water is said to heal all digestive and urinary problems if one bathes in this waterfall regularly for six months. It is a ritual to indulge in a soothing body massage with sesame oil after having a shower. The waterfall is so huge that nearly 200 to 300 people can bathe simultaneously. The water flows through rocks with sculptures of Shiva Lingams and other Gods, making a bath in the falls truly a divine experience.

2. Small Falls (Chitraruvi) This is a small falls that lies adjacent to the main falls. First timers who are scared to shower in the main falls can enjoy a soothing and milder shower here. You can reach the other falls like Shenbaga Devi and Thenaruvi by walking uphill from Chitraruvi.

3. Shenbaga Devi Falls

Shenbaga Devi Falls

You can reach these waterfalls only by trekking through the dense Chitraruvi forest. It is located at a distance of 2.5 kms and at a height of 40 feet above Chitraruvi. The falls are surrounded by pristine Champak trees that bear the fragrant Shenbaga flowers which are offered in prayer to the Shenbaga Devi Amman in the temple here. Hence this falls is known as Shenbaga Devi after the Goddess. During the auspicious day of Chitra Pournami (சித்ரா பவுர்ணமி) (the full moon day that occurs in the Tamil month of Chithirai) and on other full moon days a huge number of devotees visit this temple to seek the blessings of the Amman. You can find vendors selling garlands of Shenbaga flowers en-route to the temple. Entry to this waterfall is restricted during heavy rains owing to flash floods in the waters.

4. Thenaruvi (Honey Falls) This falls is for the adventure and extreme sports lovers. Located at a distance of approximately three kilometres from the Main falls, it is the first cascade in Kutralam. Hence the waters here are considered the most pure. The falls get their name from the several honey combs that lie on all around the hillocks that form these falls.

Reaching Thenaruvi is truly an adventure by itself. It is at the end of a trail that winds through steep mountain paths and dense forests. Once you reach, you are treated to a breathtaking sight of the horseshoe shaped waterfall that falls from three sides into a pool. Before you can enjoy a shower, you have to swim across a small but deep pond.

Entry to Thenaruvi is restricted during most of the year due to the strong undercurrents and flash floods in this area.

5. Aiyntharuvi (Five Falls)

Aiyntharuvi (Five Falls)

It is the most popular waterfall in Kutralam as it is delicate and suitable for people of all ages. From a bird’s eye view, the waterfall looks like the five headed mythical serpent, Adhisesha. The water flows down five different branches and joins together in a single stream as it flows downhill. Of the five branches, two are dedicated for women to bathe while three are for men.

It is located at a distance of 4kms from the town centre of Kutralam and 6kms from the bus stand. There is a boat house and Eco Park nearby that is popular with tourists. There are several popular temples nearby such as Swami Ayyappa temple, Vinayaka Temple, Lord Muruga Temple and an Ayyanar Temple.

6. Pazhathotta Aruvi (Orchard Falls) It is nestled in truly picturesque surroundings above the popular Five Falls. This waterfall is popularly known as VIP falls as it could be visited only by politicians and bureaucrats. Others had to get permission from the Tourism Board to visit this scenic waterfall. However, entry to this falls is restricted to everyone now.

The Horticulture Department has set up an Eco Park and Children’s park here. You can buy flowering plants and saplings for your home garden from the nursery here.

7. Pazhaya Courtalla Aruvi (Old Courtallam Falls)

Old courtallam falls (pazhala kutrala aruvi)

Also known as Shivamathungai Falls, it is located at a distance of 4miles from the Main Falls. It is rarely frequented by tourists. This waterfall used to flow into a valley formed between two huge rocks. Later, the rocks were broken to change the course of the falls and to make it suitable for bathing.

It flows from a height of 200 feet and steps are cut into the rocks to reduce the impact of the water. This makes it safe for bathing and there are separate areas for men and women. There are places near the falls where tourists can enjoy a soothing oil massage.

8. Puli Aruvi (Tiger Falls) This is a mild waterfall making it ideal for kids and old people. It is at a distance of 2kms from the bus stand and is situated on private property. The water from the falls accumulates in a lake and is sent along canals for irrigation. It was a watering hole for tigers during olden times hence it gets its name. A Sastha temple, a bathing ghat and a private palace lie near it.

9. Palaruvi (Milky Falls)

10. Gundaru Aruvi It is located at a distance of 10kms from Kutralam near Sengottai. The journey to these falls winds through green pastures and scenic surroundings. You can reach this place by travelling 2kms inward from the Gundaru Dam. Only sturdy jeeps or SUV’s can travel up the rugged mountain path to reach this waterfall. Apart from the tiny shacks selling fresh roasted fish, there are no other eateries all along the way. So carry sufficient drinking water and other food stuffs when you set off on a day expedition to this waterfall. For Rs.20 per person you can go on a boat ride on the waters of the Gundaru Dam. There is also a small children’s park nearby for kids to enjoy in some outdoor fun.

11. Kannupuli Mettu (கண்ணுப்புளி மெட்டு) This is located at a distance of 5kms to the west Sengottai Taluk Office at the top of the Gundaru Reservoir.

Work – a tiring torpid routine most of us continue doing week in, week out dispassionately to make ends meet, all the while accumulating more wealth for the corporate overlords! Although this definition of work does not apply for all, it is how I define a nine-to-five job. Added to the heavy workload, it was a ruthless summer in Chennai, and it made me go berserk. While the weather was blistering hot in Chennai, there was a storm brewing in the Indian Ocean, with Southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala being the likely targets. That was reason enough, and without any concrete planning, five of us from my office decided to skedaddle off down south. Our destination was Kutralam (Courtallam – anglicized official name), which is 600 kilometers away from Chennai. The Kutralam town is what it is because of the waterfalls in the region and an enormous tourism business generated by them. It is a dainty tourist hotspot that gets congested during peak season and desolate while offseason. Our journey, as mentioned, was a spontaneous and extremely short one, as we just had a weekend to traverse approximately 1500 kilometers, all the while exploring few locations. If you also need a similar experience to break your dull routine but hesitant to go for it, then this writeup should motivate you!

Rainbow Captured With Western Ghats In The Background

Kutralam Falls – My Journey!

If we had to choose a favorite day of the week, I believe we unanimously would choose Friday – the last weekday followed by two days of relief. Rightfully, most of us would love to party on a Friday or Saturday night so we can have ample time to recover from a bad hangover caused by a bottle of Bacardi. But this one Friday, we partied, but a party of a different kind. With no hotel bookings or any route plan, we were prepared to improvise in any situation. It was 7 pm, and we clocked out on time. Everyone rushed home to take the bare essentials, as it was just a two-day trip and nothing more. Later, around 9 pm, we met at a common point and began our journey.

Beating the Traffic!

Getting out of Chennai from the southern exit through Tambaram is almost an impossible task without wasting hours. From 8 pm – 11 pm, the traffic in the NH45 would stretch kilometers from Chrompet to Chengalpet. All intercity buses and private vehicles move through this road at that time. Therefore, we took an unconventional, longer route through OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) and joined later at Chengalpet. Although this is a long way, we would save ample time and cover more miles comparatively. Just before reaching Chengalpet, we stopped for food in a small roadside diner. There are several such joints one after the other throughout the NH45 with appealing green lights welcoming the wayfarers. The diner proved to be a supernal place that served a basic menu with exceptional taste, that too at easily affordable pricing. If you get a chance to drive through this path, instead of visiting the first-string establishment, gamble on a small highway diner!

The Overnight Drive

Having a filling dinner made us sluggish, but we just got started. Pushing the lethargy aside, I drove for hours together with just a couple of short breaks in between. After 4 hours’ drive, we reached Trichy outpost for refreshments. We had a steaming hot ginger tea to shake us up for further travel. I switched seats with my friend at the backseat and made him drive further as he had an adequate sleep till then. Trichy is the central transport hub of Tamil Nadu, and again the roads here get crowded even in early mornings. Drive from Trichy to Tenkasi (where Kutralam is located) through Madurai is a narrow rural highway with agricultural lands on both sides. The time was around 5 in the morning, and still, we could see no signs of the sun. The sky was not cloudy as well. This made us skeptical about the rainfall predictions on Southern Tamil Nadu. If we failed to experience the storm and its rain, the whole purpose of the trip would’ve been defeated. With little hope left, we proceeded towards Madurai.

The Morning Routine

It took a little above 2 hours for us to reach Madurai. We were deliberate to avoid entering Madurai city and maintained on the bypass. We stopped for breakfast at a decent South Indian restaurant. This time we could not stop at a small roadside eatery keeping the facilities in mind. We needed a restaurant with proper restroom. If we miss this stretch, then we wouldn’t have had a proper place for hours. And, trust me, never gamble on such affairs. So, during travel, always keep this in mind and stop at the right place. We could have used Coffee Day, as I have said in my previous articles, but at 7 am, in and around Madurai, it is not possible. You also can go one bit higher and look for a 4-star hotel for the facilities (that is if you don’t mind paying 500 bucks for a sandwich and coffee). When you are traveling every month like us, you will have to find frugal ways to cut costs whenever possible.

Towards Tenkasi

The restaurant that we stopped in the morning offered a good breakfast and even better restroom facilities. Subsequently, we proceeded on Tenkasi-Madurai Road. During this stretch, I was scoping for places to visit in and around Kutralam. I remembered that my friend  Jothi’s  hometown was Kadayanallur – a small village en route. Hence, I called him to inquire about the places to check and was pleasantly surprised knowing he was already in his hometown with another tribe of travelers. He also added that the weather was pleasant with intermittent rains.

A Scenic Rural Road

With this much-needed boost, we selected Kadayanallur as the upcoming destination. We had 3-4 more hours to reach his place, but the trip got further delayed because of the stops we made. One of the guys in the car was obdurate about stopping at Srivilliputhur – a town renowned for its Palkova. As a matter of fact, Srivilliputhur has its GI tag (Geographical Indication tag) for exclusively producing its Palkova. It is a sweet made by condensing milk along with a few other ingredients. In case you happen to cross the town, be sure to treat yourself with this sugary delight.

Eye of the Storm

Distractions should be avoided at all costs. That’s how we started the trip. But we already knew that we were not going to follow it. Since we had one too many breaks, we could not catch our friends stationed at Kadayanallur on time. They went out to visit Thenmala Dam. However, the good news was that it started to drizzle on our way to Kadayanallur. Even though we all ate lumps of Palkova, our gluttonous minds took the better of us and made us drive in search of food. We could not find any shop to be open on the highway, and trusting Google Maps, we turned to a confined rural road. And within minutes into the road, it started raining cats and dogs. It turned out to be one of the best driving memories I have ever had, as Pink Floyd’s Seamus was playing in the car stereo, which countered the violent storm outside.

We joined the other end of the highway within half an hour, and still, there was no trace of rains calming down. In fact, the storm stepped up its game. We reached a rickety luncheonette for afternoon meals. Rainwater was already dripping inside through the tiny gaps in the roof that was made out of palm leaves. We found a corner without a leak, but that was not for long, as the sidewall, which was just a tarpaulin flew away. Still, we were content with the interrupted lunch we had. Well, rains were what we had wished for, and we got it!

Intense Storm In Action

Kadayannallur

The car was parked roughly ten meters away from the eatery, but still, we got drenched when we attempted to run to our car. We continued our journey towards Kadayanallur, which was just another hour. Meanwhile, the other group reached Thenmala. The friend who has Kadayanallur as the native informed us that the village has some of the best Padhaneer (Padhaneer or Neera – a non-alcoholic drink made from palm tree sap). He also specified us to go to the Kadayanallur Railway Crossing, which is the exact place to find toddy sellers. Besides that, he also warned us not to get ripped off. So, as advised, after crossing the Kadayanallur village, we found the railway crossing. There were half a dozen stalls with never-before-seen fruits displayed.

Rare Variety Of Fruits 1

Along with the fruit sellers, there was an old chap in a cycle selling the infamous toddy. After strategizing and practicing our bargaining skills, we warily approached the toddy seller. He was quite friendly, and his serving skill was top-notch. He handed each of us a palm leaf that has been embellished in the shape of a bowl, and before we could inquire, he emptied his bottles of Neera into our palm-leaf bowls. Added to that, he started refilling it. Except for one dimwit, all of us denied the refill. Still, the seller was persistent. After we took a firm stand, he folded and demanded us to pay Rs.800. Flabbergasted by his claim, we asked for the breakup. Instead of replying with the breakup, he then demanded Rs.700. After haggling for quite a while, he agreed for Rs.500. With the satisfaction of getting a good deal, we called Jothi to narrate the episode. But we were trolled badly by our friend for spending five times the cost. That is one costly lesson that I would never forget in my future travels.

Kadayanallur Railway Crossing

Thenmala Hills

Disregarding the fact that the toddy seller outwitted us, we continued towards Thenmala to meet the other group. It was just an hour away from Kadayanallur. By the time we began, it was mildly drizzling. You couldn’t get wet from it, but still, you could feel the sprinkle. But as we progressed further and reached Thenmala foothills, the winds transitioned from strong breeze to a severe gale. We stopped the car and got out to feel the wind. I haven’t felt gusts this strong ever before; The wind currents were too strong for us to stand without any support. We clicked a few pictures and continued to ascend the Thenmala Hills.

The Storm Hits Thenmala Foothills

Thenmala is an eco-tourism destination located at Kerala alongside the Tamil Nadu Border. It is the first such location to get that tag in India. Rightfully, the region is the home to dense tropical forests with the presence of diverse wildlife. We visited the base of this venture, which has been named as Kallada Irrigation Project.

Kallada Irrigation Project Entrance Arch

Parappar Dam, or more generally called as Thenmala Dam, provides an unrestricted source of irrigation water to the ayacut around the region. The Dam also has given rise to a huge reservoir upon which you can enjoy boat rides.

An Amazing Suspension Bridge Over A Canal

After visiting the Dam and walking on the famous suspension bridge above one of the canals, we retreated back to the parking. Several fast-food joints and tea shops were present in the adjacent junction. Pazhampori – a sweet golden-yellow fritter made out of Nendram bananas – which were displayed in a tea shop stole our eyes. The tray with at least a dozen Pazhamporis was emptied in a moment’s notice as the steaming hot snack was perfect comfort food for the weather.

Thenmala Hanging Suspension Bridge

Ordeals of a Spontaneous Trip

We met the other group at Thenmala Dam in the evening. Our next plan was to travel to Kutralam. The rainfall got more intense by the minute. Although the rains were happy news, we were concerned about the overflow at the Kutralam Falls. Because of the tiring journey, instead of frugally sleeping in the car, we needed a proper place to rest. It had been more than 24 hours of continuous driving without sleep. Each of us drove in turns and made it for more than a day. In an hour’s drive from Thenmala, we reached Kutralam town. For the night, we got a tawdry motel room as the better ones were full. On reaching our room, we ditched the luggage and strolled out for dinner.

The name “Kutralam” is famous for two things – Waterfalls and Parotta. Parotta is a flaky layered flatbread. Each region of Tamil Nadu has its own version of Parotta, but Kutralam is the most renowned place of all. The popularity is mainly because of one age-old establishment named Courtallam Border Rahmath Kadai (or simply denoted as Border Kadai). That night, we tried a different restaurant and regretted immediately, as the orders were delayed, and most of the items on the menu were not available. Other than the unpleasant dinner experience, we got doused in the rain while returning to our shabby room. Sleep was also disturbed by a scourge of mosquitos and midnight ramblings from the next room.

Kutralam Falls

People from around the region and beyond visit Kutralam for its thriving year-round waterfalls. In total, there are nine well-known falls out of which Peraruvi (meaning Great Falls), Aintharuvi (meaning Five Falls), Puli Aruvi (meaning Tiger Falls), and Pazhaya Aruvi (meaning Old Falls) are the major ones. All these falls are located very close to each other, and it is possible for people to visit more than once on any given day.

Long Exposure Image Of Aintharuvi Five Falls Taken In Dawn

Our friend asked us to come to the main falls very early in the morning to beat the crowd. We began at around 4 am from our room. While one our way to the Main Falls, we could see the impact caused by the storm as an array of trees were uprooted on both sides of the road. Within a few minutes, we spotted an enormous tree blocking our way ahead. And there was no other alternate route to the Main Falls. Clearing such a huge obstacle would take several hours if not a day.

A Huge Tree Uprooted Completely Blocking The Road

Because of this hindrance, we could not reach the Main Falls. Also, due to high downpour, authorities might restrict access to the Falls. We had to improvise and change our plan. Later, we settled on Puli Aruvi, as it is a much smaller and accessible waterfall. By the time we reached the falls, the place was crowded, and it was hard to find a parking spot. As the other waterfalls were restricted for the public, tourists paraded to Sitraruvi. It was difficult for us to seep through the crowd to reach the falls. Also, there is a small temple before reaching the streams. But it would be insolent not to experience the cold herbaceous Kutralam water nourishing your body and soul. Also, if you get the chance, try visiting more than one falls!

Kutralam Falls – Things to Know!

When to Travel: Tourists flock to Kutralam during the summer holidays. And that might be the best timing to go if you neglect the hassles of overpricing in lodges and restaurants. During monsoons, falls would be closed because of the heavy discharge of water. Contrarily, you may enjoy the storm as I did on this trip. Also, authorities arrange an annual festival called Saral Vizha (literally translated to drizzle festival) during the months of July and August.

What to Do: The major attraction of the town is its waterfalls. Apart from that, there are several temples located around the region like Kutralanathar Temple, Srivilliputhur Andaal Temple, and Papanasanathar Temple. There are a host of activities that can be done on the Western Ghats. For instance, in and around Thenmala Reservoir, boating, biking, and trekking are quite popular.

Towards Thenmala Dam

How to Travel: Kutralam is well-connected through roadways and railways. The nearest railway station and bus terminal are in Tenkasi. Many families have the habit of traveling to Kutralam Falls by hiring a van or mini-bus, depending on the number of passengers. Kutralam does make for a pleasant family tourist destination. If you are planning to travel with family, book hotels in advance and avoid hiked rates.

Kutralam Falls – Key Takeaways!

It was a rainy Sunday morning, and we hesitantly had to leave Kutralam to get back to our dreary routine. We had one last objective to complete in the trip. While returning to Chennai, we entered Madurai city for lunch at the famous Madurai Konar Mess, and later at Famous Jigarthanda Shop (name of the shop is “Famous” and Jigarthanda is a beverage indigenous to the sleepless city – Madurai). Unfortunately, a couple of hours is not enough to even scale one region in Madurai, and the city deserves a completely different article altogether.

Thenmala

We drove for a little above 1600 kilometers within 40 hours, and this road trip might sound tiring for some and eccentric for others. But it’s all about the company you have and the experience you share that makes the trip a memorable one. It sure is memorable for me, and if you haven’t had such experience, it’s about time!

Time to head to Kuttalam and splash waterfalls

  • There are mainly nine waterfalls at Kuttalam.
  • Though located in Tamil Nadu, Kuttalam is easily accessible from Kerala.

 alt=

Celebrations start at Kuttalam in Tamil Nadu when the monsoon arrives in Kerala. It is then the several waterfalls in the area come alive and start attracting travellers. For the next six months, it will be the tourist season at Kuttalam in Tirunelveli district.

The place will be a crowded with people eager to drench themselves under the waters from the falls. Compared to the waterfalls in Kerala, the falls here are ‘gentle’ in nature and there is no danger in taking a shower directly beneath the plunging water. However, leaving nothing to chance, the authorities have set in place stringent safety measures. Even women police officials camp at the spot to help tourists.

Though located in Tamil Nadu, Kuttalam is easily accessible from Kerala, especially in the border areas. It also offers a good option for an enjoyable trip during the monsoon. For residents of Pathanamthitta, a tour to Kuttalam is just a short picnic, of less than 100 km.

One can witness this spectacular reverse waterfall in Maharashtra

There are mainly nine waterfalls at Kuttalam. In addition, there are numerous tiny streams, adding to the beauty of the place. Among them, two waterfalls, Peraruvi and Ayntharuvi, attract the most number of visitors. All the other falls can be reached within a distance of 1 km. They include Puliyaruvi, from where tigers are believed to take a sip, Pazhayaruvi, Thenaruvi, Chembakadevi waterfall, Chithira Aruvi, Puthu Aruvi and Pazhattotta Aruvi. Waters of all these falls have medicinal properties, according to local belief.

Bus services have also been started from nearby towns of Sengottai and Tenkasi for the benefit of travellers.

Peraruvi (Main falls)

This is the biggest fall, as well as the most popular. The water tumbles down from a height of about 60 m, but in three ‘steps’ along the way, minimising the impact. Moreover, high up, before taking the plunge as Peraruvi, the river’s pace is slackened by several huge depressions and potholes on the river bed. It is, in fact, the water overflowing from these potholes that comes down gently as Peraruvi.

Bathers find the cool waters refreshing; there are separate areas for women and men. A fence has been installed for safety. The police outpost is also at hand. Arrangements are in place for visitors to change as well as buy towels. However, soap and shampoo are banned as the water that flows down the bathing area is used for drinking purposes by many local people.

Another attraction are the two parks near the entrance where children can spend some time and the others relax. Entry to one park is free while there is a fee at the other. There are some massage parlours too.

The Thirukuttalanatha Temple here draws devotees from many places. Shops selling fancy items and eatables surround the temple.

Ayntharuvi (Five falls)

Here, the water makes a plunge in five separate streams. It is the most attractive of all the falls in Kuttalam. Two main falls each on the left and right are meant for men and women. The one in the middle is gentle and caters to children. It too divides into two while falling – one for girls and the other for boys.

Safety arrangements have been put in place here also. Adding to the fun, monkeys frolic all around. There is a wide parking area and shopping facilities. Bus and auto stands are right near the waterfalls.

Other falls

Between Peraruvi and Ayntharuvi, an artificial lake has been created where boating is available. Visitors can reach all other falls easily. Accommodation is available at Kuttalam and surrounding places. Pilgrim spots of all religions are located nearby, attracting devotees. The area around is a thriving agricultural landscape, producing fruits, flowers and paddy. This makes a visit truly worthwhile.

Looming over Kuttalam like a citadel is the Western Ghats covered with clouds. The Palaruvi waterfall near Aryankavu in Kollam district is also not far.

Border chicken

kutralam to kerala tourist places

The Courtallam Border Rahmath Kadai can be reached while travelling from Sengottai to Kuttalam. It is about 2 km from Sengottai. The famous border chicken and kutti parotta here should be tried. A speciality is pepper chicken kothiyittathu . Chicken fry is also popular. No broiler chicken is used to make the dishes and the taste of the gravy lingers for a long time, say foodies. The items are served on banana leaves. It is a trend among many tourists to gorge on Rehmath’s parotta and chicken after a good bath at Kuttalam.

Kuttalam can be reached via Thenmala and Sengottai or Tenkasi from Punalur. Thenmala is 25 km from Punalur. Sengottai is 29 km ahead and Kuttalam is 7.5 km from there. From Tenkasi, one can reach the falls by travelling 7 km.

Visitors keen to travel close to the forest, hills and through tunnels can take the Punalur-Sengottai hill railway, which has been restarted now. Train travellers can get down at Sengottai station. The only train along this route is the Kollam-Tambaram Express. It leaves Punalur at 2.12 pm and reaches Sengottai at 4.55 pm. Auto and bus are available to Kuttalam from there. The return train leaves at 11.45 am.

Café Samsara at Niraamaya Retreats Surya Sumadra Kovalam

Like so many of the best hotels, Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra Kovalam began with one eccentric dreamer. In 1982 a professor at the Indian Institutes of Technology had an idea for his own winter residence in the far south of Kerala. He oversaw the careful restoration of a tharavad (ancestral home), then had it shipped and reassembled in a cliff-top coconut grove above the Arabian Sea.

His first, octagonal cottage is still there, now one of the top accommodations in the resort that opened a decade later. The owners brought in more traditional cottages and transformed the hillside into a celebration of ancient Keralite architecture, heritage and culture. By 1995, the government classified it as a Heritage Hotel, and in 1996, it was named the best Heritage Hotel in India’s southern region.

But nothing about the 31-room hotel feels like a 1990s resort. Rather, it exists out of time. Four-posted beds are draped with billowy mosquito nets. Dark wood furniture and ceilings gleam with years of polishing. Silk cushions are plopped on the sofas.

The octagon cottage

The hotel is now part of the Niraamaya Retreats portfolio of about a dozen wellness and Ayurveda hotels around India, including five in Kerala. Each has an exclusive location, such as the coconut grove for this one and a coffee plantation for another. They also have signature experiences, like sunset cruises and morning jaunts to the fisherman’s beach, as well as serious yoga and meditation classes every day.

Russia Is Running Low On Tanks. So Why Are A Thousand First-Generation T-72s Still Sitting In Storage?

‘house of the dragon’ season 2, episode 4 recap and review: the red dragon and the gold, kevin costner’s ‘horizon’ tumbles out of box office top 5 in 2nd week.

The Kovalam hotel is the only one in the group to be invited into Relais & Châteaux, which the property manager attributes to its clifftop location and traditional architecture. But the excellent cuisine certainly helps. The coconuts—starting with the one that greets arriving guests as a welcome drink—could not be any fresher, and the fish, from the nearby beach town of Kovalam, is straight out of the sea.

The main restaurant, Café Samsara, is blissfully open-air and overlooking the Indian Ocean. (Samsara can be translated several ways, but I’ll go with “rebirth” here for poetry’s sake.) The menu is long and ambitious, taking in Kerala, pan-Indian and Western fare. As always, it’s best to go local.

And to go all-in. The traditional Kerala lunch option is a sort of southern thali, with special rice mounded on a giant banana leaf, then surrounded by spoonfuls and dollops of various curries, dals, riatas, pickles and chutneys. At the same time that it’s delicious, it’s meant to be healthful and balanced from an Ayurvedic standpoint. (It’s also meant to be eaten with your hands, according to local custom, but they’ll bring cutlery if you ask.)

That’s in line with the overall approach to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical system that complements yoga. Although the program can rigorous, with Ayurvedic doctors on staff, hot boxes for steam baths and copper pots for shirodhara (dripping warm oil on guests’ foreheads), it can also be a light introduction to the practice that’s heavy on pleasure. The spa is Green Leaf Certified (the highest classification for Ayurvedic centers in Kerala) for those who are looking for the real deal.

And for them and for everyone else, Niraamaya in Kovalam is the real deal for South Asian relaxation. Days follow a languorous rhythm. Palm trees sway; secluded beaches beckon. Staff can take you outside for a backwater cruise through the mangrove forest of the Poovar estuary to a golden sand beach, where they’ll set up a picnic and pop open the sparkling wine.

Back at the hotel, there’s a swimming pool with a perfect oceanic backdrop, secluded sitting areas and a clifftop bar for sundowners of Indian beer and wine. There are winding pathways and gently sloping lawns. And there’s still the same spirit of rest that drew an academic technologist some four decades earlier.
