Those seeking a chic, mid-century modern getaway should consider Palm Springs . The average high never falls below 69 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning no matter when you visit, you’ll get to enjoy some fun in the sun. Explore the massive Joshua Tree National Park, then check out the plentiful vintage shops in downtown Joshua Tree to hunt for treasures. Stay a few nights at AutoCamp Joshua Tree for a glamping stay unlike any other.

Santa Monica Pier

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

The entire city of Santa Monica is worth a visit, but don't miss the iconic Santa Monica Pier while there. The 1,600-foot pier comes with a little amusement park featuring a roller coaster so you can get a bird’s-eye view of the beach below before taking a short, belly-flipping drop back down. Then, rest your head at the Shore Hotel , which provides views of the pier, too.

For a dose of Southern California cool, head to Long Beach. As the name implies, the seaside community comes with plenty of beach frontage, but it also boasts its fair share of culture. That includes the RMS Queen Mary , docked at Queensway Bay; colorful pieces at the Museum of Latin American Art; and more than a few fish swimming at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Stay at The Cove Hotel , which is within walking distance of all the city’s best attractions.

Mammoth Lakes

You'll want to trade your surfboard for a snowboard with a visit to Mammoth . The beloved ski resort is home to some of the best powder in the world, as well as one of the longest ski seasons in the nation. Don’t feel intimidated if you’re a newbie, as the mountain has a robust ski school available. Santa Barbara deserves a spot high on any must-see list of California. Its gorgeous beaches, quaint shops, stunning street art, and plenty of delicious seafood restaurants make it a place worth experiencing for more than a long weekend. Take in the endless vistas at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park . Visitors here may find super blooms in the spring, but don’t skip over this destination in the summer, fall, or winter, either. The state park is a stellar place for hiking, admiring avant-garde art at Galleta Meadows, and even pitching a tent just about anywhere with a bit of backcountry camping.

Looking for awe-inspiring views? Take a drive up Highway 1 to Big Sur . The cliffside community overlooks some of the most jaw-dropping coastline in the state, and it's home to some hiking trails worth exploring, too. Sleep at the Post Ranch Inn , which provides those epic ocean views out of every window.

Disneyland Resort/Christian Thompson

Sneak in a little magic by paying a visit to the Happiest Place on Earth:  Disneyland . Choose between visiting either one of its two parks, or snag a Park Hopper pass to see both in one go. Then, spend your nights at the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa , where you can view the park right out your window.

Yosemite National Park

Matthew Micah Wright/Getty Images

Feel inspired by Mother Nature at every turn with a visit to Yosemite National Park . Here, you can gaze upon the breathtaking views of Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, and Half Dome while hiking to lookout points or taking a slow drive with the windows rolled down. Stay inside the park and camp at Curry Village , home to 14 tented cabins that sit under centuries-old trees.

Channel Islands

Cindy Robinson/Getty Images

Hop a boat to the Channel Islands , an archipelago that remains wild and free. Explore the eight islands, which are home to more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, by hopping from one to another or scuba diving off the coast. Again, it’s another perfect spot to pitch a tent, so you never have to leave the great outdoors.

Kelly Griffin/Travel + Liesure

Looking to paddle out with the best surfers in California? Then, it’s time to head to San Diego , the place to be for a surf lesson (or two) and lounge session on the warm, sandy shore. But the city also has plenty more to explore, from fantastic breweries to the world-class San Diego Zoo. Book a stay at Pendry San Diego , which features a rooftop pool so you can take a dip and enjoy the city skyline all in one.

DianeBentleyRaymond/Getty Images

For more wine-centric fun, head to the small town of Healdsburg, where you’ll find plenty of wineries happy to pour you their best glass. Guests here can also live like a local by shopping, dining, and strolling through the Plaza, exploring the downtown area, or taking a hike through the pristine landscapes. Book a night or more at the Montage Healdsburg , which comes with so many luxuries, you may never want to leave.

San Francisco

Get an urban escape in San Francisco . The NorCal city is home to plenty of delicious dining venues and shopping galore on Haight Street. While here, take some time to explore the outdoor spaces too, like The Presidio and Golden Gate Park, both of which offer fantastic views. Stay at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco , beloved by Travel + Leisure readers, as it was voted the best hotel in the city in our 2022 World’s Best Awards.

Death Valley

Alessandro Lai/Getty Images

Don’t let the name Death Valley fool you. Death Valley National Park is a place teeming with life — if you know where to look. Visit Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, and check out the endless salt flats, which happen to be home to an endemic snail only found here. It's also worth exploring Salt Creek, home to another endemic species — the pupfish, which have evolved to live in the salinated waters. Then, snag a room at the historic Inn at Death Valley , a recently revamped desert oasis that will cater to your every whim.

Big Bear Lake

ikon/Getty Images

Find smaller mountain magic at Big Bear Lake . In the winters, the community becomes a snow-filled heaven, much to the delight of skiers and snowboarders in Los Angeles, who can get there in under a three-hour drive. Come summer, Big Bear transforms into lakeside bliss, so no need to pick one or the other, as every season here is perfect. Book a stay at Noble + Proper , a gorgeous, high-design hotel.

Santa Catalina Island

lfreytag/Getty Images

Grab a boat to Santa Catalina Island , where you can hop on a bike (we recommend an e-bike to help battle the massive hills) and pedal for as far as your legs will take you around the jagged coast. Stop in for a bite, a drink, or an ice cream in the city of Avalon, or head inland for a tour of the island’s wild buffalo herd. At day's end retreat to one of the island's top hotels . For instance, lay your head at the Hotel Atwater , a more than 100-year-old gem in Avalon.

Redwood National Park

Carmen Martínez Torrón/Getty Images

Located in the northern part of the state, Redwood National Park is home to some of the tallest trees in the world — some so large, you have to drive through them to get by. Again, it’s best to stay in the park, which is entirely possible, thanks to the delightfully charming little abodes at Elk Meadow Cabins .

Even though Hollywood is actually a relatively small neighborhood in Los Angeles, its larger-than-life reputation makes it a star. Come see the famed Hollywood sign , honor your favorite celebrities on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and tour icons like the TCL Chinese Theatre. Stay at The West Hollywood Edition , a sleek property located in the center of the action.

Laguna Beach

See one more surf mecca by visiting the Southern California gem of Laguna Beach. This coastal town is bursting with artistic talent, which you can check out in its numerous galleries or by taking a self-guided tour to admire its impressive outdoor public art. Like San Diego, it, too, is a great place for a surf lesson. Or, you can always just hang on your board long enough to watch a pod of dolphins swim by. Spend the night at the Surf & Sand Resort and leave the windows open all night to snooze to the sound of the crashing waves outside.

The charming community of Solvang is well-known for its Danish-style architecture that will make you feel like you've been transported to Europe. Here, visitors can indulge in more of California’s wine culture, too. Book a stay right in town at the Mirabelle Inn , home to First & Oak, a Michelin Plate-designated restaurant.

California is full of beautiful destinations and fun attractions to experience.

California's attractions are so diverse that travelers of all types will have no problem finding things to thrill them. Beaches , lakes , forests, mountains and deserts all sit side by side within the state's borders. Amid its natural wonders, California is also home to several wine regions, luxury hotels and, of course, star-studded Hollywood. With all this and so much more, it may be challenging to figure out how to fit all the state's most important must-sees in one or more trips.

Let this guide assist you in your California vacation planning, whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro. From the north to the south and everything in between, these are the top things to do in California.

17-Mile Drive

Lone Cypress, a prominent landmark along the 17 Mile Drive, on a foggy day

California's 17-Mile Drive is a spellbinding and awe-inspiring route that weaves along the most scenic stretch of the Monterey Bay coastline. This must-visit road, winding through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach, takes drivers up into the Del Monte Forest, past palatial mansions and down along picture-perfect craggy beaches and bluffs. Take time to stop at the various lookout points marked along the way, including the famous Lone Cypress.

If you're interested in bedding down in Pebble Beach, consider splurging on a room, or at least stopping for a meal, to behold the stunning scenery that surrounds the properties at Pebble Beach Resorts, including The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay . If you are not staying overnight or dining here, expect to pay a vehicle fee to access 17-Mile Drive. Also note that motorcycles are not allowed.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Empty trail by the coastline at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

This small community in Monterey County is one of the most unique and charming towns in California. Its enchanting coastal location, wooded streets, fairytale-like architecture, and bevy of local shops and restaurants make Carmel-by-the-Sea well worth the detour from the iconic state Route 1. Even if you only have a half-day in Carmel, browse the art galleries, take a walk on the beach and enjoy a meal in one of the quaint restaurants.

Be sure to visit a few of Carmel's beaches, starting with the namesake Carmel Beach, which is located at the end of Ocean Avenue, the town's main drag; pet owners will be pleased to know it's a dog-friendly beach . Carmel River State Beach, which is lesser known and typically not as highly trafficked, connects to the even more secluded Monastery Beach via the Carmel Meadows Trail. As for where to stay, consider treating yourself to one of the town's luxurious accommodations, including traveler-approved L'Auberge Carmel or La Playa Carmel .

Visit the theme parks

You are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to theme parks in California. The impressive amount of options will please every type of traveler. Kids will naturally be dazzled by Anaheim's world-famous Disneyland Resort . However, if you're not up for paying Disneyland's notoriously high ticket fees, consider exciting alternatives such as Legoland California . There are Six Flags amusement and water parks near both Los Angeles and San Francisco – perfect for thrill-seekers – and Universal Studios Hollywood is home to the popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the new Super Nintendo World.

Due to the popularity of these parks, you'll have no problem finding nearby accommodations. Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a top choice among travelers, as is The Garland for those visiting Universal Studios Hollywood. Legoland has two kid-friendly hotels to choose from, though travelers can also opt for a stay at the well-received Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa , which is located right on the beach and only a short drive to Legoland.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite Valley National Park with a huge waterfall

If you only have time to visit one outdoor destination during your California trip, make it Yosemite . With the national park welcoming more than 3 million visitors per year, Yosemite Valley has been known to stir awe for centuries with its grand granite peaks, magnificent waterfalls and lush evergreen landscapes. There is so much to do in this nearly 750,000-acre park that you'll need several days to take it all in. If you're unsure where to start at this California bucket list destination, know that Glacier Point, Half Dome, Tunnel View and the Mist Trail are considered iconic, can't-miss Yosemite attractions , according to recent travelers.

There are three hotels within Yosemite, including the luxury Ahwahnee hotel. You'll also find cabins, canvas-sided tents, campgrounds and RV campsites spread around the park, as well as several dining options. Be warned that the park does get very crowded during the summer months, so visiting in the offseason is a great idea – especially with Yosemite's picturesque snow-capped peaks. Check for road closures during winter months; tire chains may be required.

Explore the desert

Springtime flowers in desert in California

To properly appreciate California's diverse geological landscape, you'll need to venture beyond the coast and explore the desert. Luckily, two magnificent desert landscapes can be found less than three hours from Los Angeles and San Diego. Joshua Tree National Park , located about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, is an approximately 800,000-acre oasis dotted with the unique Joshua tree, which can only be found in the American Southwest. Meanwhile, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, located about 85 miles northeast of San Diego, is California's largest state park and features striking scenery ranging from slot canyons to palm oases.

Both of these parks offer memorable hiking trails and camping options. You'll want to plan a multiday trip to explore either of these vast parks. Traveler favorites in Joshua Tree include the 3-mile out-and-back Ryan Mountain trail and the 1.7-mile Skull Rock loop trail. In Anza-Borrego, visitors enjoyed the 2.6-mile out-and-back Pictograph Trail and the more moderate 2.3-mile Slot loop trail. Due to the desert's extreme summer heat (think: daytime temperatures in the 90s or even 100-plus degrees), it's best to visit during the spring and fall.

Laguna Beach

If you're interested in experiencing small-town Southern California, Laguna Beach is the perfect place to start. Conveniently situated between Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Beach is located along the coast just off state Route 1. Laguna Beach's picturesque setting is characterized by pristine oceanfront parks and a collection of beautiful beaches wedged between its coastal bluffs. Be sure to visit unique cove beaches, such as Victoria Beach and Crescent Bay Beach, as well as larger shorelines, including traveler-favorite Crystal Cove State Park, which receives praise for its beautiful setting between Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.

Laguna Beach is also home to a bevy of luxurious accommodations , including The Ranch at Laguna Beach and the traveler-approved five-star Montage at Laguna Beach . Once an artists' colony, Laguna Beach is known for its summer art festivals and numerous art galleries. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy too, such as mountain biking, skimboarding and hiking. Parking can be hard to find in the summer months and on holiday weekends, but there is a free open-air trolley service that runs along the area's stretch of coastline.

Waves breaking on El Matador beach in Southern California

Located a little more than 30 miles west of Los Angeles, Malibu is often seen as a coastal refuge for the rich and famous. While that impression is certainly true, Malibu is worth a visit for its superb beaches and the exceptional parks a stone's throw away.

Drive up state Highway 1 and make a pit stop at popular shorelines, including Robert H. Memorial State Beach, Zuma Beach and Point Dume State Beach. Nature lovers should also take time to hike some of the many trails at Point Mugu State Park, Topanga State Park or the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. For hikes with spectacular ocean views, hit up the 3-mile Solstice Canyon Loop trail or the challenging 2.7-mile Mugu Peak loop trail. Check for trail closures before heading out.

Due to Malibu's small size and affluence, you won't find many hotels that offer affordable rates, so you might want to bed down in nearby Los Angeles. If you are intent on staying in Malibu, you'll find comfort and luxury at the Malibu Beach Inn , The Surfrider Malibu and Hotel June Malibu. Stop by Malibu Country Mart for high-end shopping and farm-to-table dining, or check out Trancas Country Market for snacks at Vintage Grocers or lunch at Malibu Brewing Company.

Vineyard in Napa Valley, California

Many are aware of Napa Valley 's reputation as a world-class wine destination , but Napa isn't the state's only wine producing hot spot. Sonoma is considered Napa's more casual sibling, offering more diversity in terms of attractions , including the beaches of Sonoma Coast State Park and the African-style game drives run by Safari West. Travel farther south to experience the Santa Ynez Valley, considered one of the most diverse grape-growers in the country. Behold the giant sequoias and redwoods

Road through Sequoia National Park

Did you know that the Pacific Coast of the U.S. is the only place in the world where giant sequoias and coastal redwoods grow naturally? Visiting these natural wonders is a must-do when in the Golden State. Contrary to popular belief, redwoods and sequoias are not the same tree; they require two separate climates to survive. To see giant sequoias, head into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, such as to Sequoia National Park , where you'll find the world's largest tree measured by volume: General Sherman.

To marvel at giant redwoods, you have your pick of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park or Humboldt Redwoods State Park (don't miss the Shrine Drive Thru Tree). All these parks sit in northwestern California. These parks offer a variety of camping experiences, such as individual campsites, group sites and trail camps for wilderness backpacking and backcountry camping. Tent camping sites and cabins are available.

Experience wildflower season

Orange wildflowers across mountain in California

Spring and summer are great times to see an abundance of wildflowers – such as the state flower. Depending on where you go, the California poppy has been known to blanket valleys and hills with its vibrant orange tint. How much of a bloom you see and where varies based on the year's seasonal rainfall. Some of the best places to see wildflowers are in Southern California. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Point Mugu State Park, Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area and Chino Hills State Park are a few of the most popular locations where you can spot pretty flowers.

If your California travels will be concentrated in the north, try North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve or Lake Tahoe, the latter of which is known to feature a spectacular seasonal display of violet and deep blue lupines. Just be sure to respect the landscapes by staying on designated trails, checking to see if dogs are permitted before you bring your furry friend, and visiting only during park hours.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara's alluring Spanish and Mediterranean architecture also makes this destination feel like a true getaway.

Visit the Funk Zone for wine tasting and art, State Street for shopping and dining, and the one-of-a-kind Ganna Walska Lotusland. Explore one or more of the national forests

National park in California on a sunny day

Did you know California has the most national forests of any state in the nation? In addition to its famous national parks, California has 18 national forests to its name. If you are vacationing in the southern part of the state, consider a visit to the Cleveland, Angeles, San Bernardino or Los Padres national forests (but check with the U.S. Forest Service before you go to ensure they're not under closure orders caused by fire or storm damage when you visit). These options sit in proximity to vacation hot spots like San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

North of Sacramento, outdoor lovers have their choice of nearly a dozen national forests, including the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Klamath national forests, to name a few. These forest destinations offer beautiful wilderness landscapes, hiking trails and camping options.

Trek along the Lost Coast

The Lost Coast in California on a sunny day

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore from Chimney Rock trail at sunset

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Aerial view of Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles city skyline at sunset in California

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign in the distance on Mount Lee, overlooking the Hollywood district of Los Angeles

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

Golden light over Indian Wells Golf Resort, a desert golf course in Palm Springs, California, with view of the San Bernardino Mountains

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Make it a weekend away with an overnight stay at a Palm Springs hotel like the new wellness-focused Sensei Porcupine Creek or the modern yet rustic Sparrows Lodge .

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the central California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium draws nearly 2 million visitors per year. This institution houses more than 200 world-class exhibits that highlight the marine habitats of the area, as well as plants and creatures of the deep ocean. Guests can watch sea otters frolicking, witness glowing jellyfish and admire a 28-foot-tall kelp forest.

The aquarium also prides itself on working to protect the Pacific Ocean off California's coast. Its initiatives include reducing plastic pollution in the ocean, promoting sustainable seafood choices and helping rebuild sea otter populations. Past visitors recommend taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.

I’m traveling to Hollywood. What’s the best airport to fly into?

The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the most convenient and offers a wider selection of airlines and flights, but it’s one of the busiest airports in the United States, and it’s 35m from Hollywood. Top tips for finding cheap flights to California

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest California flight deals.
  • If you’re planning to travel to one of the two main cities in California, San Francisco and Los Angeles, you should look for flights to airports in neighboring cities. Los Angeles is close to Long Beach (30m), Burbank (15m), and Ontario (40m). San Francisco is close to Oakland (20m) on the East Bay and San Jose (50m).
  • If you’re traveling to San Francisco, your first thought is to look for flights that land at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). However, if you want to avoid a busy airport, you can search for flights to the nearby airports Oakland International Airport (OAK) (30m by car) and San Jose International Airport (SJC) (45m by car).
  • Passengers traveling to Los Angeles can choose to fly into alternative airports like Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and Long Beach Airport (LGB), but for most, Los Angeles International is still the most convenient option, only 25m from the city center. A taxi costs around $47 flat rate, and a one-way ticket on the LAX FlyAway Bus to the city center costs about $8.
  • Business travelers visiting Silicon Valley should look for nonstop flights to San Jose International Airport. Most major airlines fly there nonstop from other American cities and destinations in Asia and Europe, and the airport is only a 15m drive from the world’s most famous tech hub.
  • If you’re traveling with your dog, you’ll find pet relief areas in all airports in the Golden State. If choosing the airport with the best pet relief area is important when looking for flights to California, then the Los Angeles International Airport and the San Diego International Airport (SAN) have the best facilities.

Top 5 airlines flying to California

They put me on a chair in between two men, one overweight who was almost falling on top of me, and the other was even uncomfortable because I was half falling because of what the other was pushing me. I stayed with. my feet were swollen from fluid retention and from being unable to accommodate myself. it was very uncomfortable. I asked for help but they told me that the flight was full and they couldn't help me. I got off the plane almost unable to walk due to the inflammation. and then at FLL airport I asked for help because I couldn't go to my next flight, which was a connection.

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

Overall fine but both ways for this trip was delayed.

Flight was delayed by almost 5 hours. Suitcase was not loaded despite the flight being near empty (my colleagues’ suitcases did reach JFK, unlike mine). Had to argue on phone to get JetBlue to deliver the case to my hotel. Never again

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Great! I love Jet Blue. My favorite airline! Very efficient, clean and timely.

Run out of snack choices. Why are the seats not padded for your butt? Are we sitting on blocks of wood or metal for $250-300 a pop? This ain’t spirit. Let’s get it together people

We were told that our flight would be delayed for 90+ minutes because of weather, so we went to get something to eat only to have them randomly start boarding 15 minutes after the announcement, with no warning.

Entertainment... No earphones passed out. Many including me couldn't use the TV. Legroom was good. Crew was indifferent and a bit surly. Free wifi was a nice convenience. Check in desk location was unknown. Gate number on the boarding passes was wrong.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

Crew was very cooperative and professional. Passenger's first checked in bag should be free.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

Check in etc was very good. As for on the plane, it was like flying in a freezer. It was so cold, i have flown for years and never been so cold on a plane. Staff on board said its always cold when flying which is a load of rubbish. They wouldnt put any heating on and now i have the flu because of this .

I’ve had a couple flights this week on United that were delayed by an hour or more

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

Our original business class flight was cancelled so we not only downgraded but we were also spread out across the plane not sitting together in separate middle seats. My poor kids were scared and couldn’t see me on the flight and the crew wasn’t sensitive to the situation and what the airlines did to us. Very dissatisfied with United airlines.

My husband and I pre-ordered our food, but they did not have my husband’s order, and my cheese plate was very average. I asked for a blanket and was told they don’t carry blankets on domestic routs. The flight was on time and smooth!

There were delays on both ends. It made it less than excellent. This plane was great though

Everything was great except for the wifi was junk. Crew was super friendly and helpful

Attendants were rude. Scowling. Seats were miserable and we paid extra.

Fight crew was not very attentive and the bastions were gross!

Our flight was great we left Kona earlier and got into LAX almost an 1hour earlier as well. LAX AA is in repair so to get out and found our bus to get pick up was a bit confusing.

Plane was good but was delayed. probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Seating was cramped.

5 hour flight - full flight - not enough room to use my computer - slightly delayed - Admirals club was excellent quality food, drink made up for flight seating. No food offerred on flight, you ahd to prebook.

We experience delays on departure and connecting flights resulting in 14 hour to our next departure. We were accommodated with a night's stay but was only provided a 12 dollar meals accommodation. The airlines rules state.at least 50 dollars. In any case, it can not make up for the whole day missed on our vacation in Sydney Australia.

I can say I will not be taking this airline again any time soon. Seat were uncomfortable and too tight. Lack of chair screen and little overhead space.

Delays delays and more delays in both LAX and San Jose. And then I said something else flight was supposed to arrive in Portland at 12:04 but didn't land until 2:30 PM which made me late for my appointment.

My flight was delayed then cancelled My elder parents were upstairs waiting for a spirit rep to bring them downstairs to where my sister waited for 2 hours. My elder parents are not able to walk . My dad was wet of urine from where he could not hold it .waiting for some spirit personnel to wheel chair them back down stairs to where my sister was waiting for them for two hours . That is not ok

Terrible leg room, seats don’t recline, delayed flight, and even water isn’t free onboard

Flight was good and clean but delayed over an hour on the return flight.

It was nice! There was a very unhappy child in front of us and the flight attendant did a great job calming the child. I was impressed.

They stuck us with multiple extra fees. I will never fly spirit again

The guy with severe body odor sat next to me. For the whole duration of the flight it was a torture. The airline should have better policy on limiting people with bad body odor to board the flight. Passengers should not be the ones to endure bad odor for the whole duration of the flight. The airline should be e the one to ensure decent air quality for ever passenger.

They charged me 212.00 for a heavy check in bag at the gate. The pricing and process was so confusing - as if it was designed to purposefully gouge customers who need to board plane. That experience combined with the outrageous price charged will prevent me from ever flying Spirit again. And I’ll be sure to tell the story to anyone who cares to hear.

The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12. I will not fly Spirit again.

The agent at the check in desk was absolutely rude. The rest of the team after that was good, but the check in process at LAS was miserable. The woman at the desk spoke like we were stupid and was rude throughout the process.

One gate agent in Sioux Falls ruined it for a few people on the flight. It was the usual, that personal item is too large, you are going to have to pay $100 to get it on the flight. One family with a baby were told that they had to have a passport for the baby to get on the flight. Also a Sheriff's Deputy needed to go on the airplane to return a lost cell phone to a minor on the flight. The gate agent would NOT let him go on without a boarding pass. I don't know who this moron was, but the sooner Frontier moves him where he can't interact with people, the better off they will be. Let's just say the deputy did the job that he needed to do and returned the phone to the minor on the plane, even with argument from a gate agent that thought he had way more power than he actually does. Very IRRITATING individual.

Bad experience… crew are extremely strict with personal bags… they overcharge me coz my bag was one inch H

They never updated the boarding pass on their apps to show their delay

Online check-in was not user-friendly. Too many fees, not cost effective.

They wouldn’t let us on the flight even tho we were an hour early. No refund not even our bags that were prepaid

I brought a ticket and car rental through Travelocity. There was no where to add a KTN. So I thought i’d add it by looking up ticket on frontier website. I tried 3 times with the frontier chat bot to add my KTN it never updated my boarding pass. So then I tried showing up early to do it in person at the airport. The first employee update my ktn in the system and gave me a new boarding pass. I was sent back by tsa to join regular line. Then I was told to add my Ktn. It would cost me $25 extra. Given the length of the cue I did pay. Congratulations! BUT I will NEVER fly frontier again. Plus the plane was very old. It had actual ashtrays and old looking tray backs. Worst travel experience ever. Im warning my friends and family not to use frontier ever.

I did not enjoy the trip home on Frontier for several reasons: there is too much cost besides the flight, which was more than I would normally pay, then having to pay for luggage, and carry-on, seat (if you want to reserve when booking) then you must pay over $3 for a can of soda, and $4 for a snack. A cup of water is free.

Did not realize seats did not recline. Best to travel in an exit row... No question

I strongly dislike Frontier. I find them barebones, the seats not particularly comfortable, the nickel and diming is maddening, the app is TERRIBLE - super confusing to navigate, and the last 4 frontier flights I have flown have been on AVERAGE 2 hours late, one ruining a fancy night out in Vegas with reservations made well in advance, which was nodded to with a measly 5000 miles, which translates to almost nothing. At least credit a free checked bag or something.

8 hr delay. had to buy another ticket with another airline

How to get to California

There are a number of ways to get into California including flying to various airports both big and small such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Palm Springs International Airport (PSP). Where you fly into largely depends on what area of California you plan to spend your time in.

You can also drive into the state of California or catch public transportation, such as taking a bus or catching a train.

What's the weather like in California?

California has a very Mediterranean climate with hot, relatively dry summers and mild winters. This kind of weather pattern is mostly true for the majority of areas in California but there are some exceptions such as San Francisco experiencing fog in spring, the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges experiencing snow, and Palm Springs experiencing extreme heat.

What to pack for California

What to pack for California largely depends on which area in the state you're traveling to. However, if you're traveling in summer you should pack clothing items such as dresses, shorts, and t-shirts as Californian summers can be quite warm.

While the temperatures in winter are quite mild, you should still be prepared for colder weather especially in the evenings so packing pants, sweaters, and appropriate footwear is essential.

Is it safe in California?

As a state, California has a higher crime rate than the USA on average. This is largely due to the crime rates in the major cities of California being quite high. This is to be expected though and as long as you're aware of your surroundings and stick to well-populated tourist areas, it is fairly safe. Precautions should still be taken though, that of sticking to well-lit areas, avoiding going out at night by yourself, and leaving a bar/attraction if you feel uncomfortable.

How many theme parks are there in California?

California has several theme parks in various major cities including Los Angeles and San Diego. Some of the most popular theme parks in California are below:

  • Universal Studios Hollywood
  • Six Flags Magic Mountain
  • California's Great America in San Francisco
  • Pacific Park

How many national parks are in California?

California has 28 national parks, all located in different regions of the state. Redwood National Park is the largest national park in California and is located on the Northern Coast. The most popular national park is Yosemite thanks to its stunning natural landscapes, gushing waterfalls, and other geological features. Some of the best national parks in California are below:

  • Yosemite National Park
  • Joshua Tree National Park
  • Death Valley National Park
  • Sequoia National Park
  • Point Reyes National Seashore

How far is California from...?

California is a very popular state among tourists thanks to its sunny weather all year round, metropolitan cities, and impressive natural landscapes. These tourists can come from neighboring states or from across the country in a variety of ways including by car or by plane. The quickest way to travel to California is by catching a flight but you can also opt for a 'road trip' style car journey. Below is how far California is from its neighboring states by plane:

  • As Arizona is relatively close to the state of California, the flight time is roughly 1 hour, 18 minutes.
  • The journey by plane between Colorado and California is just over 2 hours.
  • To travel between Texas and California, it would take you approximately 3 hours by plane.
  • Catching a flight from New York to California will take you a little of 5 hours if you were to fly non-stop.
  • Similarly, to travel between Florida and California will take you 5 hours by plane.

What are some of California's biggest festivals/events?

There is plenty to see and do in California and these top events will occupy you for, not just hours, but days:

  • BottleRock Music Festival
  • Stagecoach
  • Lightning in a bottle

11 things you need to know before visiting California

Sep 14, 2023 • 6 min read

Three friends hanging out at the lifeguard tower on a beach in California

Don't try to cover everything on your first visit to California – it's important to take time to enjoy it © Jordi Salas / Getty Images

As a newbie California resident keen on exploring as much of my adopted home as possible, I was struck by how geographically diverse the Golden State is, the impracticalities of making a "quick trip" to one part of the state from the other end of it, and its surprisingly variable weather.

Gleaned over nearly 20 years of West Coast living, these tips and good-to-knows will help you travel to and within California with ease and confidence. We’ll start with logistics and other practicalities before moving into considerations for booking cultural attractions and activities, and the best way to explore our incredible parks, beaches and mountain regions.

1. Don’t try to cram it all in at once

From frothy coastlines to scenic deserts, expansive mountain ranges, buzzing metropolitan cities and more remote corners, California really has it all. Its terrain covers more than 1000 miles from north to south, and its diversity means there’s always more to explore no matter how much time you have planned.

Consider focusing your trip on a few regions, or planning your trip by theme, such as national and state parks or a coastal road trip along Highway 1.

2. Hone in on your itinerary

A week in the Golden State presents opportunities to combine urban exploration with nearby picturesque jaunts. You could spend several days in San Francisco, then commune with ancient redwoods in Muir Woods  another day, before cycling along Half Moon Bay the next. From a home base in Los Angeles or San Diego, a week affords a few overnight stays in Temecula Valley’s wine region, desert vibes in Joshua Tree, or the mountain towns of Big Bear , Idyllwild, and Julian .

3. Prepare to pay more for everything

Californians joke that pricier, well, everything, is the trade-off (colloquially known as the sunshine tax) for our idyllic weather. In other words, there’s a level of acceptance travelers would benefit from before arriving. California has the highest sales tax rate in the country, among others, so be prepared to fork over more than in other states for lodging, food, fuel, entertainment and parking.

4. Pack layers

California is endowed with lots of sunshine, but you may need more than a pair of jeans and a t-shirt to navigate all that the state offers. Pack for colder temps during California’s winter season at elevation, like Mammoth and Tahoe. The coast is typically a bit cooler than inland regions, and generally, a light sweater or jacket may be required once the sun sets.

5. Book campsites in advance

Yosemite ’s imposing granite walls and Joshua Tree ’s alien-like cacti and dark skies draw millions of travelers to California each year. Secure your spot in these popular parks and book campsites and entrance reservations up to six months in advance. Also, be mindful of seasonality. Reservations for parks in desert regions like Death Valley National Park and Joshua Tree fill up for the winter and early spring months, while coastal campsites book up for summer.

6. Take advantage of accessible attractions

There is always more to be done to ensure everyone experiences all that California offers, and the state continues to consider the needs of individuals with varying physical and cognitive abilities. Disneyland’s Disability Access Service lets eligible guests schedule return times for certain experiences and offers a comprehensive guide detailing each attraction’s sensory features – from loud noises to scents.

Legoland offers a similar program, including an Assisted Access Pass that allows guests to board a first-choice ride without waiting, scheduled times for other rides and designated quiet areas.

Museums offer varying levels of accessibility resources like wheelchairs, assisted listening devices, and more, including Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive ( BAMPFA ), and the Broad , a contemporary art museum in Los Angeles.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find paved paths at beaches like Oxnard Beach Park , and June Lake in the High Sierras. Entire cities are taking action as well. Visalia, a central California city that makes a convenient entry point for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks , was recognized as a Certified Autism Destination.

Many of its hotels and family-friendly attractions meet the criteria to ensure autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals have a comfortable experience. In southern California, Palm Springs tourism organization is pursuing similar efforts to grow the number of its certified attractions, like the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert.

7. Seek award-winning dining beyond metropolitan centers

Excellent, award-winning eats are the norm in California’s major cities. But travelers can also find them in its more suburban and sparsely populated parts. You can find Michelin-rated eats at Petiscos , a Portuguese small plates restaurant in San Jose; Bombera , a Mexican restaurant in Oakland; Chez Noir in Carmel-by-the-Sea; Knife Pleat in Costa Mesa; and Valle , a modern Mexican restaurant in Oceanside.

Additionally, James Beard America’s Classics-recognized restaurants highlight delicious home-style cooking in lesser-known parts of California, like Casa Vega in Sherman Oaks, and Pho 79 in Garden Grove.

8. Take advantage of year-round peak produce

California’s farmers markets are a colorful way to scope out what’s fresh and in-season and discover first-hand why its produce is some of the best in the country. Aside from visiting a farm directly, it’s a great way to connect to an industry that cultivates more than a third of the United States’ vegetables and two-thirds of its fruits and nuts. Every market is a little different and likely includes prepared foods and hand-crafted goods, live musical entertainment, and kid-friendly activities.

9. Check out California’s islands

California’s islands are worth their own detour. There’s an island for every adventurer, whether you’re looking for resort-style comforts or seeking something more rustic. Intrepid travelers should consider the rugged Channel Islands , while Catalina Island blends luxury hotels with outdoor adventures. A bridge to Coronado Island in San Diego reveals wide, powdery beaches perfect for building sandcastles and sunbathing in front of a historic Victorian hotel.

10. Respect wildlife and sealife

Occasionally, and though rare, it is possible to catch sight of a mountain lion, coyotes at dawn and dusk, and snakes on the trails. Along beaches and near harbors, it’s also common to glimpse seals and otters. Keep your distance once you notice them, and know that you’re likely too close for comfort if they notice you first. Dial 911 for emergencies, and contact the Department of Fish and Wildlife to report all other incidents.

11. Acknowledge California’s original stewards

Indigenous communities are some of California’s most invaluable stewards of its open, nature-filled spaces. Initiatives and partnerships like Reexamining Our Past Initiative are aimed at better acknowledging and reflecting these communities' history and culture. This entails practical measures such as renaming Sue-meg State Park in Humboldt County, and efforts to expand exhibits that illustrate the native community’s contributions to the area, like Old Town State Historic Park in San Diego.

California Has Fully Reopened—What That Means for Travelers

The state has returned to some semblance of prepandemic life.

California has fully reopened–“that means no more physical distancing, no more capacity limits on businesses, no more county tiers, and relaxed mask guidance”—the state wrote in its June 15 reopening plans .

With 53 percent of California residents now fully vaccinated for COVID-19, the state has done away with its pandemic-era color-coded tier system for establishing which businesses can be open and under what conditions.

“California is turning the page on this pandemic,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement about the reopening plan. California has reported 68,560 new COVID cases in the past month, down from its all-time high of more than 1 million cases in December 2020, but up from the 35,000 cases it reported one month prior, according to Johns Hopkins University .

The governor is hopeful that the reopening represents an opportunity for California to reignite its once thriving tourism economy.

“As we move forward to a postpandemic life, our tourism sector is expected to come roaring back,” Newsom stated during a June 14 press conference.

California lost nearly half of the 1.2 million jobs previously provided by its hospitality and tourism industries. The governor is proposing $95 million to help recover those jobs and rebuild the state’s travel industry.

Are masks required in California?

On June 15, California lifted its mask requirements for vaccinated residents in most settings with the exception of hospitals, long-term care facilities, homeless shelters, and on public transit, where masks are still required regardless of vaccination status.

But a little more than one month later, on July 17, Los Angeles County has reinstated its indoor mask mandate for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, due to rapidly increasing daily new cases of COVID-19, according to an order issued by the L.A. County Department of Public Health .

Additionally, as of July 14, the Northern California counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, and the City of Berkeley are also recommending that everyone mask up indoors as a precaution against a rise in COVID-19 cases.

What does the reopening plan mean for California businesses?

Restaurants, wineries, bars, live music venues, breweries, museums, zoos, shopping centers, aquariums, movie theaters, and all other businesses throughout the state can now be open as normal with no capacity limits or social distancing required.

The only exception is indoor events hosting 5,000 people or more, or what the state refers to as “mega events.” For these events, attendees must show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of the event in order to enter. For outdoor events of 10,000 people or more, such as concerts, festivals, and sporting events, the state recommends that organizers ask attendees to provide proof of vaccination or of a negative COVID-19 test result.

Are hotels in California open?

Yes. All hotels and lodgings in California can welcome guests and are now operating as normal with no capacity limits or social-distancing requirements. Campgrounds , including those within state and national parks , are open as well.

Related Should Fully Vaccinated Guests Still Have to Wear Masks at Hotels?

Are state and national parks open?

All beaches and state and national parks throughout California are open.

Yosemite National Park is one of six national parks throughout the country that is requiring advance reservations this summer. If you want to drive into Yosemite any time between May 21 and September 30, you’re going to need an advance reservation, which can be booked via recreation.gov .

Yosemite also sets aside a limited number of reservations that can be booked exactly one week before the arrival date. So, for instance, if you want to go on Auguest 18, you can log onto the system on August 11 to try for a spot. Bookings open up at 8 a.m. Pacific Time on any given day.

Related It’s Not Too Late to Get Reservations at These Popular National Parks

Are Disneyland, Legoland, and other theme parks open?

After being closed since March 14, 2020, the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks finally reopened on April 30, 2021—but only to California residents visiting in groups of no more than three households and with a reduced capacity.

As of June 15, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks are welcoming travelers from out of state as well.

Visitors to Disneyland are not required to be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19, but the Disneyland Resort states that California still “strongly recommends” that all guests be fully vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering the parks.

Effective June 15, fully vaccinated visitors are not required to wear face masks in most areas other than buses and monorails. Disney is not requiring proof of vaccination, Reuter reported . But Disney expects people who are not fully vaccinated to continue wearing masks indoors, except when eating and drinking.

On June 15, the Disneyland Resort’s Paradise Pier Hotel reopened, which was followed by the reopening of the Disneyland Hotel on July 2. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa reopened on April 29.

The reopening developments coincided with a big addition to the Disneyland parks—the brand-new Avengers Campus , an entire super hero–themed land that was unveiled in the Disney California Adventure park on June 4.

Advance reservations are required for the Disneyland Resort—in order to obtain tickets to the Disneyland parks , visitors need to have both an entry ticket and a theme park reservation for the same day. Tickets can be booked up to 120 days in advance.

Universal Studios Hollywood reopened on April 16 to California residents and fully vaccinated out-of-state visitors. As of June 15, Universal Studios Hollywood is open to all visitors, regardless of vaccination status. Like Disneyland, Universal “strongly recommends” that all guests be fully vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering the park. Guests who are not fully vaccinated are asked to wear a face mask during their visit, and Universal asks that all guests wear face masks indoors.

The Legoland California Resort in Carlsbad reopened on April 15 to California state residents and to out-of-state guests who provide proof they have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19. As of June 15, Legoland is open to all visitors, regardless of vaccination status. Advance reservations are required and Legoland continues to encourage guests to wear masks.

Are there any restrictions on travel to and within California?

Earlier this year, the California Department of Public Health issued a travel advisory recommending that Californians avoid nonessential travel. That advisory has been lifted.

There are currently no restrictions on travel to California from within the United States, and all of the state’s major airports, including Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport, remain open with flights operating.

As for international visitors, per U.S. government restrictions , most foreign nationals who have been in China, Iran, South Africa, the European Schengen area, Brazil, the United Kingdom, or Ireland in the previous 14 days will be denied entry into California. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are exempt.

As of January 26, all international passengers age two and older flying into the U.S. (including returning U.S. citizens and permanent residents) must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test procured within three days before boarding their flight to the United States.

Take normal security precautions in the United States

Border with Mexico

Criminal incidents associated with drug trafficking are more frequent at the border with Mexico, in the following states:

If crossing the U.S.– Mexico border by car:

  • remain extremely vigilant
  • only use officially recognized border crossings
  • avoid travelling at night

Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs, particularly in urban centres and tourist locations.

  • Don’t leave bags or valuables unattended in parked cars, especially rental vehicles, even in trunks
  • Ensure that your belongings, including passports and other travel documents, are secure at all times

Violent crime

Within large urban areas, violent crime more commonly occurs in poor neighbourhoods, particularly from dusk to dawn. It often involves intoxication.  Incidents of violent crime are mainly carried out by gangs or members of organized crime groups but may also be perpetrated by lone individuals. Although violent crime rarely affects tourists:

  • be mindful of your surroundings at all time
  • verify official neighbourhood crime statistics before planning an outing
  • if threatened by robbers, stay calm and don’t resist

Crime Data Explorer – Federal Bureau of Investigation

Gun violence

The rate of firearm possession in the US is high. It’s legal in many states for US citizens to openly carry firearms in public.

Incidences of mass shootings occur, resulting most often in casualties. Although tourists are rarely involved, there is a risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Familiarize yourself on how to respond to an active shooter situation.

Active Shooter Event Quick Reference Guide - Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency

Home break-ins

Canadians living in holiday homes have been the victims of break-ins and burglary.

Make sure you lock windows and doors securely at night and when you are away.

Common criminal strategies

Be on alert for robbery ploys targeting visitors.

Some criminals on highways target travellers leaving airports or other tourist destinations. They signal tourists to stop due to an issue with their vehicle. They then wait for the driver to pull over or exit the car before grabbing exposed valuables. Criminals may also throw items at the windshield, obscuring the view of the road and forcing the driver to pull over.

If you’re the victim of such a ploy:

  • avoid pulling over on the side of the road
  • put on your hazard lights and slowly drive to a gas station, police station or other safe and populated area

Demonstrations

Demonstrations may occur. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs, including debit card cloning. Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

  • pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
  • use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
  • cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
  • check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Overseas fraud

There is a threat of terrorism. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time.

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, and hotels

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) maintains a public alert system on terrorism to communicate information about terrorist threats.

National Terrorism Advisory System  – U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Hiking and mountaineering

If you intend on hiking, backpacking or skiing:

  • never practise these activities alone and always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • obtain detailed information on hiking routes or ski slopes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails or slopes
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you are properly equipped and well informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • know the symptoms of acute altitude sickness, which can be fatal

Information about foreign domestic airlines

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

We have obtained the information on this page from the US authorities. It can, however, change at any time.

Verify this information with the  Foreign Representatives in Canada .

You must provide proof of your Canadian citizenship upon entry to the U.S. There are several documents that can satisfy this requirement.

Canadian citizens aged 15 years and under entering the United States by land or water require one of the following documents:

  • an original or a copy of a birth certificate
  • an original Canadian citizenship certificate
  • Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI ) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Trusted Traveler Programs  – U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Enhanced Driver’s Licenses: What Are They?  – U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Apply for a Secure Certificate of Indian Status  – Indigenous Services Canada

Other travel documents

Different entry rules may apply when travelling with a temporary passport or an emergency travel document. Before you leave, check with the closest diplomatic mission for your destination.

  • Foreign representatives in Canada

Additional information at borders

Customs officials may ask you to provide your address while in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Customs Border Protection (CBP) officers may also ask for:

  • evidence of residential, employment or educational ties to Canada
  • proof that the trip is for a legitimate purpose and is of a reasonable length
  • proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay

Dual citizens

Although U.S. authorities don’t formally require dual nationals to carry both a U.S. and a Canadian passport, carrying both documents as proof of citizenship may facilitate your entry into the United States and your return to Canada.

  • Travelling as a dual citizen
  • Dual Nationality  – U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs

Canadian visitors can usually stay in the United States for 6 months without a visa. You must declare your intended duration of stay upon entry into the United States.

In most circumstances, Canadian citizens don’t require visitor, business, transit or other visas to enter the United States from Canada but there are some exceptions.

Canadians Requiring Visas  – U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada

Canadian permanent residents

Canadian permanent residents may need a non-immigrant visa to enter the United States.

You must obtain this visa from the U.S. authorities before entering the country. You must also have a valid passport from your country of citizenship.

Cross U.S. Borders – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Visa Waiver Program

If you are a citizen of a country that is part of the visa waiver program (VWP), you don’t need a visa to enter the U.S. for stays up to 90 days. Instead, you must obtain pre-travel authorization via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior your departure.

  • Visa Waiver Program  – U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program  – U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  – U.S. Department of Homeland Security

You must also carry proof of Permanent Resident Status in Canada upon re-entry into Canada.

U.S. permanent residents

Canadians who are permanent residents of the United States must present a valid U.S. permanent resident card upon entry.

International travel as a U.S. Permanent Resident  – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

First Nations and Native Americans born in Canada

Members of Canada’s First Nations and Native Americans born in Canada may freely enter the United States for the purposes of employment, study, retirement, investing, or immigration.

  • Entry and exit for First Nations and Native Americans  – U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada
  • Green Card for an American Indian Born in Canada – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Working in the United States

Most Canadian business travellers may apply for admission at a U.S. port of entry without first obtaining a non-immigrant visa. However, travellers entering the United States in certain business-related categories are required to present specific documents to establish eligibility for admission.

If you plan to work in the United States, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for specific requirements.

  • Foreign Representatives in Canada

Studying in the United States

Canadian citizens don’t need visas to study or participate in a student exchange program in the United States. However, they need to be registered with SEVIS, a U.S. student tracking system. Students must present their registration form to CBP officers each time they enter the United States.

  • SEVIS – U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Canadian students  – U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada

Length of stay

If you wish to stay longer than 6 months, you must apply for an extension at the nearest U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office once you are in the United States and before the expiry of your initial authorized stay. Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate that you are a temporary visitor in the United States.

The U.S. government strictly enforces immigration regulations. Remaining in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay can result in serious consequences such as detention or deportation.

There is no set period that you must wait to re-enter the United States after the end of your authorized stay. However, if a CBP officer suspects you are spending more time in the United States than in Canada, it will be up to you to prove to the officer that you are a temporary visitor, not a U.S. resident.

Extend your stay  –  U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Upon entry into the United States, non-U.S. citizens must provide biometrics, such as digital fingerprints and a photograph.

Most Canadian citizens are exempt from this requirement. However, it will apply to Canadian citizens who:

  • need a visa or a waiver of ineligibility
  • must obtain an I-94 Arrival/Departure Record form to document dates of entry and exit from the country

Random screenings of exempt Canadians have occurred at border crossings and airports. If you feel that your information has been wrongfully collected, you can address the issue directly with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

  • Biometrics  – U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • Arrival/Departure Forms: I-94 and I-94W – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Electronic devices

U.S. border agents are entitled to search your electronic devices, such as your phones, computers or tablets, when you are entering the United States. They don’t need to provide a reason when requesting a password to open your device.

If you refuse, they may seize your device. The border agent could also delay your travel or deny entry if you are not a U.S. citizen.

Before crossing the border, put your device in airplane mode to ensure remote files don’t get downloaded accidentally.

Inspection of Electronic Devices  – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Preclearance

The preclearance service provides clearance for entry into the United States for persons and their luggage at a Canadian preclearance airport before departure instead of on arrival in the United States.

When using U.S. preclearance facilities at a Canadian airport, you must meet U.S. entry requirements. You will be interviewed by a U.S. preclearance officer. They are authorized to inspect your luggage and can refuse you entry into the United States.

It’s an offence under Canada’s Preclearance Act to knowingly make a false or deceptive statement to a preclearance officer.  While you are in a preclearance area, you are subject to Canadian law, including:

  • the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • the Canadian Bill of Rights
  • the Canadian Human Rights Act
  • Canada’s Preclearance Act
  • Canadian criminal law

You may withdraw your request to enter the United States and leave the preclearance area at any time unless a U.S. preclearance officer suspects on reasonable grounds that you have made a false or deceptive statement or obstructed an officer. The officer may then detain you for violations of Canadian law.

Preclearance Locations  –  U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Criminal Record

If you have a criminal record, no matter the severity or the date of the offence, you may be refused entry to the United States. You may also experience problems when travelling through U.S. airport facilities. A pardon for an offence issued by Canadian authorities is not recognized under U.S. law to enter the United States.

If you are ineligible to enter the United States, you may apply directly to U.S. Customs and Border Protection for a temporary waiver of inadmissibility via the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Canadian citizens may also apply at land borders.

U.S. ports of entry are computerized and connected to a centralized database. Information is readily available on criminal convictions in both Canada and the United States. Even though you may have entered the United States without hindrance in the past, you could run into difficulty if your record shows a criminal conviction or a previous denial of entry. Attempting to gain entry without a waiver could result in several weeks of detention and a permanent ban from entering the United States.

  • Applying for Waiver  – Person entering into the United States with criminal record or overstay – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Previous use of cannabis, or any substance prohibited by U.S. federal laws, could mean that you are denied entry to the U.S. If you attempt to enter the U.S. for reasons related to the cannabis industry, you may be deemed inadmissible.

  • Cannabis and international travel
  • Cannabis and the U.S. – U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Canada
  • Laws pertaining to cannabis

Boating in U.S. waters

Operators of small pleasure vessels arriving in the United States from a foreign port must report their arrival to U.S. Customs and Border Protection immediately for face-to-face inspection at a designated reporting location.

Some exceptions apply, including under Nexus Marine.

Pleasure Boat Reporting Requirements  – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

You must have a valid Canadian passport to take a cruise from the United States. Some of the countries you visit will not permit entry without a passport. A passport is also important to re-enter the United States at the end of the cruise.

Ship authorities might retain your passport during the cruise, in accordance with their own administrative regulations and to facilitate clearance with U.S. Immigration.

If your passport is kept:

  • obtain a receipt
  • ensure you recuperate your passport at the end of the cruise
  • always keep a photocopy of your passport with you

When examined at a port of entry, cats and dogs must show no signs of diseases communicable to humans. If there is evidence of poor animal health, you may need to get your pet examined by a licensed veterinarian, at your own expense. U.S. authorities may also require a health certificate.

Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before entry, except for puppies under 3 months of age. Vaccination against rabies is not required for cats.

Other animals are also subject to controls or quarantine requirements.

Bringing Pets and Wildlife into the United States  – U.S. Customs and Border Protection

  • Children and travel

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is not required to enter this country.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.

* It is important to note that country entry requirements may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Polio (poliomyelitis) is an infectious disease that can be prevented by vaccination. It is caused by poliovirus type 1, 2 or 3. Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus 2 (cVDPV2) is present in this country. Polio is spread from person to person and through contaminated food and water. Infection with the polio virus can cause paralysis and death in individuals of any age who are not immune.

Recommendations:

  • Be sure that your polio vaccinations are up to date before travelling. Polio is part of the routine vaccine schedule for children in Canada.
  • One booster dose of the polio vaccine is recommended as an adult .

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

Zika virus may be a risk in some areas of the United States.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s webpage Areas at Risk for Zika  for the most up-to-date information on Zika risk in the United States.

During your trip to a Zika risk area:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to areas where Zika is a risk with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel to these areas.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy .

  • In this country, risk of  dengue  is sporadic. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions webpage on Dengue in the U.S. States and Territories for the most up-to-date information on dengue outbreaks in the United States
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Human cases of avian influenza have been reported in this destination. Avian influenza   is a viral infection that can spread quickly and easily among birds and in rare cases it can infect mammals, including people. The risk is low for most travellers.

Avoid contact with birds, including wild, farm, and backyard birds (alive or dead) and surfaces that may have bird droppings on them. Ensure all poultry dishes, including eggs and wild game, are properly cooked.

Travellers with a higher risk of exposure include those:

  • visiting live bird/animal markets or poultry farms
  • working with poultry (such as chickens, turkeys, domestic ducks)
  • hunting, de-feathering, field dressing and butchering wild birds and wild mammals
  • working with wild birds for activities such as research, conservation, or rehabilitation
  • working with wild mammals, especially those that eat wild birds (e.g., foxes)

All eligible people are encouraged to get the seasonal influenza shot, which will protect them against human influenza viruses. While the seasonal influenza shot does not prevent infection with avian influenza, it can reduce the chance of getting sick with human and avian influenza viruses at the same time.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Medical services and facilities

Health care is excellent. Service is available throughout the country. However, treatment costs are expensive.

All hospitals must accept and treat emergencies, regardless of the person’s ability to pay. Clients will, however, be charged for all services rendered. Foreign visitors without travel health insurance will have to pay out of pocket for their medical treatment.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

There are restrictions and prohibitions on the import of certain prescription drugs into the United States.

Some medication that can be purchased over-the-counter in Canada is restricted to prescription-only status in the United States.

  • Bring sufficient quantities of your medication
  • Ensure to have a physician’s note explaining your medical condition, if applicable

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Laws vary greatly from state to state. Consult the website of the state you wish to visit prior to arrival.

Penalties and transfer of offenders

A serious violation of the law may lead to a jail sentence or, in some states, a death sentence. Canadian citizenship confers no immunity, special protection or rights to preferential treatment.

If a jail sentence is imposed, it will be served in a U.S. prison, unless a request for a transfer to a Canadian prison is approved by the United States and Canada. Both countries have signed a treaty that permits a Canadian imprisoned in the United States to request a transfer to complete the sentence in a Canadian prison.

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines.

Drugs, alcohol and travel

Although the possession of cannabis is legal in some U.S. states, it remains illegal under U.S. federal laws in any form and quantity, making it illegal to bring across the Canada-U.S. border.

Don’t attempt to cross the Canada-U.S. border with any amount of cannabis in any form, even if you are traveling to a U.S. state that has legalized possession of cannabis. If you do so, you can expect legal prosecution and fines, and possibly jail time.

  • Entry/exit requirements pertaining to cannabis

Prescription medication

Personal medication may be subject to U.S. drug importation laws and regulations.

In general, personal importation of a 90-day supply of medication is allowed. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has absolute discretion to allow or not your Canadian-purchased medication into the United States.

When taking any prescription medication to the United States, it’s important to:

  • take only the quantity that you would normally take for the number of days you will be in the United States, plus an additional week’s worth
  • pack medicines in their original packaging with the dispensary label intact that shows your name and other pertinent information such as the drug’s name, dosage and DIN (drug identification number)
  • keep a duplicate of your original prescription, listing both the generic and trade names of the drug
  • have a physician’s note explaining your condition and the reason for you to be legitimately carrying syringes, if applicable

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and the United States.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in the United States, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the American court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in the United States to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Expedited removal

U.S. Customs and Border Protection can bar non-citizens from the United States for five years if, in their judgment, the individuals presented false documentation or misrepresented themselves. Lying to a customs official is a serious offence.

There is no formal appeal process under expedited removal. However, if you believe the law has been misapplied in your case, you can request a supervisory review by writing to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services district director responsible for the port of entry where the decision was made.

The currency in the United States is the U.S. dollar (USD).

Canadian currency and personal cheques from Canadian banks are not widely accepted. Most banking transactions require a U.S. bank account.

There’s no limit to the amount of money that you may legally take into or out of the United States. However, you must declare to U.S. Customs and Border Protection:

  • if you carry more than US$10,000 (in cash, cheque, money order,      travellers’ cheque or any other convertible asset) into or out of the      United States
  • if you will receive more than US$10,000 while in the United States

Failure to comply can result in civil and criminal penalties, including seizure of the currency or monetary instruments.

From deciding when to go and what to see, to how to get around and what to pack for your California road trip, we will walk you through each step so that you’ll have the best California vacation possible! Let’s get starte

Where is California?

Before deciding where to go in California, it is important to have a general idea of the geographical location of the Golden State and its big cities.

Let’s take a quick look at the map of California below.

Map of California

California stands on the far western end of the USA. It meets the Pacific Ocean on the west while sharing borders with Arizona and Nevada to the east (Las Vegas is nearby and it’s commonly included on a road trip to California).

The sunny state stretches from the Mexican border in the south for nearly 900 miles (1448 km) to the state of Oregon in the north.

Northern California (NorCal)

In the northern part of the state, you’ll discover forests with redwood trees that are about 380 feet (115 metres) tall—about the length of a football field! East of the redwoods is Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the 48 contiguous states and part of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Big cities in northern California include Sacramento (the capital), San Francisco and San Jose. The world’s largest tech hub Silicon Valley and America’s most celebrated wine region, Napa Valley, can also be found here.

Central California

The centre of the state includes Santa Cruz County in the north and all of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in the south. The sun-kissed coast is dotted with idyllic beach towns. One of the prettiest drives is the Big Sur, offering memorable ocean vistas between Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea and the northern tip of San Luis Obispo County.

Southern California (SoCal)

As you travel south, you will find the crowds. Some come to Los Angeles for Hollywood’s star power, and some make magic happen at Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort. Some travel east to the 25,000-square-mile Mojave Desert, while others spend happy days on sunny beaches in San Diego.

When is the best time to visit California?

golf course in pebble beach via 17 mile drive

Most of California benefits from a pleasant Mediterranean climate (cool, rainy winters and dry summers) that makes it a popular year-round tourist destination. Having said that, it is a large and diverse land so the climate varies widely depending on the terrain (coast, inland, mountains) you’re visiting.

The coast enjoys a mild, temperate climate, but is covered in fog in the summer (usually June-August is the foggiest). In San Francisco, the notorious fog even has a name “Karl the Fog,” with a Twitter and Instagram account!

Karl the fog california

Farther inland, expect extreme temperatures, colder winters and hotter summers. Death Valley, one of the hottest places on Earth, gets extremely hot and dry in the summer, running above 120℉ (49℃) in the shade during daytime! Snowfall is commonly seen in the northern mountainous area such as Mt. Shasta and Lake Tahoe during winter months from December to February.

california desert landscape

Most of California, though, is marked by only two distinct seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season runs from October to April in northern California and from November to March or April in southern California.

So when you plan a California trip, our best suggestion is to visit during the shoulder season (April-May, Sept-Oct), when you can take advantage of mild temperatures, sunny days and fewer crowds.

How many days should you spend in California?

Now that you’ve decided when to come to California, the next question is how long should you stay? California is huge – did you know that it takes over 12 hours to drive from northern California to southern California without traffic and or any stops?

And there’s so much to see and do in between! You really could spend months here if you want to explore every single destination in the State. But sadly not all of us have the luxury to take months-long vacations.

Depending on what you want to see and where you’re coming from, your California vacation could easily be as short as a weekend for a city getaway to San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego. Or, if you want to see a little more, consider 1-2 weeks for a coastal road trip to California along the Pacific Coast Highway. Even better, combine urban exploration with outdoor adventure to get the best of both worlds, which you can swing in 7 days.

To get the most out of the state, we’d recommend planning a trip to California that lasts at least two weeks.

Where should you go when visiting California for the first time?

Our advice to first time visitors to California is to start your trip in one of the big cities with major airports—San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego.

Convenience plays a key role as these cities are easily accessible by air, which is important for international travellers. They are also packed with excitement and have enough variety to keep you entertained, no matter your interests. Lastly, you can easily get around without renting a car.

Here’s what you can expect in each of the metropolitan cities in California:

  • San Francisco: The hilly city boasts jaw-dropping ocean views, world-class cuisine, hip cafes, and colourful Victorian style houses. We love it for its laid back culture and how it maintains a balance of history and modernity. The city is big yet manageable for exploration for first-time travellers. Doubtlessly, Golden Gate Bridge is the top attraction in SF and we never get bored looking at it!

Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco California

  • Los Angeles: Home to the Hollywood sign, the city is the entertainment capital of the world . Just as you saw in the movie La La Land , this is where people who wish to make a name for themselves in show business come to realize their dream. You can get behind-the-scenes looks into the world of filmmaking and television broadcasting at studios like Paramount Pictures Studios and Warner Bros. Studio. Those who love action-packed entertainment should look into spending a day or two in Universal Studios Hollywood or Disneyland in Anaheim!

  • San Diego: There are many reasons to visit San Diego, but with 70 miles (112 km) of shoreline, the southern city offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the country! And the warm climate makes it an appealing destination for beach activities like surfing, paddle boarding, swimming, and boating.

Each city has its own appeal and is so different from the others. The ideal plan is to choose one of the 3 cities as your starting point, stay there for 2-3 days, then add some nearby destinations mentioned below to your California road trip itinerary.

What other destinations should you include when planning a California road trip?

California has a wealth of natural beauty – from giant redwoods and snow-capped mountains to expansive deserts, and idyllic beaches. Here are the best places worth exploring in California:

Northern California

  • Redwood National and State Parks: comprises one national park (Redwood) and three state parks (Del Norte Coast, Jedediah Smith, and Prairie Creek). It is home to the tallest trees on earth!
  • Lake Tahoe: the second deepest lake in the USA. It sits between California and Nevada.
  • Sonoma & Napa Valleys: These two valleys have over 30 diverse growing regions, producing some of the country’s – and the world’s – most celebrated wines. When planning a trip to Napa Valley, our advice is to plan your tastings, especially at the famous wineries, during the week to avoid big crowds.
  • Monterey Bay: a hotspot for wildlife viewing. Sea lions, seals, otters, and whales can often be spotted by the coast. 17-Mile Drive is a must-see. If you’re staying overnight, we suggest booking your accommodation at Carmel-by-the-Sea, a charming fairytale village nearby!
  • Big Sur: a rocky stretch of coastline along the Pacific Coast Highway between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon. You will find plenty of hiking opportunities and beautiful photo spots (Bixby Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach) along the way.
  • San Luis Obispo (SLO): A sleepy town along Big Sur. Unlike the bustling scene at Santa Monica, the historic town has a laid-back charm filled with historic architecture, eclectic shops and hip eateries.
  • Yosemite National Park : one of the most famous and popular national parks in the US. It is best known for its gigantic granite domes and cliffs, giant sequoia, and towering waterfalls
  • Death Valley National Park: lies in the Mojave Desert and is the home to barren Badwater Basin, which is the lowest point in North America, as well as the Furnace Creek – one of the hottest places on Earth.

Southern California

  • Joshua Tree National Park: It is a treat to explore its dramatic geography. The odd-shaped Joshua Trees make for incredible photos!
  • Palm Springs: a desert oasis city known for its mid-20th century modern architecture. A great place to play golf, relax and enjoy spas!

➤ By car: For the utmost convenience and flexibility, rent a car ! However car rental comes with some hassles such as parking. Is this a good option for you? Keep on reading in the next section.

Do you need a car in California? If so, how do you rent a car in California?

Big cities in California have an extensive public transportation network. In San Francisco, for example, you can use the Muni system, the city’s network of buses, subways, streetcars and cable cars, to explore all corners of the city. Similarly, Los Angeles is well-connected by L.A. Metro via bus, rail and bike, and San Diego’s MTS operates a reliable bus and trolley system in the region.

You can easily get by without a car in big cities. In fact, it is easier to explore without the car because finding parking in the cities is a nightmare!

However, if you want to explore outside the city boundary, visit the national parks, or drive the famous Pacific Coast Highway, then you absolutely need a car.

You can find car rental companies like Hertz, Avis and National, stationed at major airports or in the downtown core of a city.

Click here to find the best car rental deals!

Most car rental companies require you to pick up and return at their storefront. If you prefer to have the rental car delivered to you, consider Kyte ! We fell in love with this service because its hassle-free operation saved us so much time!

driving car in california

What do you need to rent a car?

To rent a vehicle, you’ll typically need to be at least 25 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and have a major credit card .

For out-of-the-country visitors, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required if your license doesn’t have a photo or isn’t written in English. Make sure to carry your home license together with the IDP.

Additionally, California law requires liability insurance for all vehicles . Check your auto insurance policy back home or your credit card’s travel insurance policy to see if you’re already covered. If not, there’s usually an option to pay $10 to $30 per day for an insurance package at the car rental place.

What is parking like in California?

Parking is usually plentiful and free in small towns and rural areas, but often scarce and expensive in cities. Downtown and hotel parking garages in San Francisco and LA can be costly, ranging from $30 to $50 per day.

When parking on the street, pay attention to the restrictions (e.g. street-cleaning hours, permit-only residential areas) and colored curbs, or you may be ticketed and towed. In Carmel, we were careless with street parking, missed the red curb marking, and ended up having to pay a $50 fine!

California cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose need little introduction. There is a huge range of accommodation options available to meet your budget and needs.

Find the best hotel deals for: → Los Angeles on Agoda // Expedia → San Francisco on Agoda // Expedia → San Diego on Agoda // Expedia → San Jose on Agoda // Expedia

➤ Beach vacations

Away from the city lights, California promises spectacular coastline, dotted with trendy beach towns, superb surf spots and vast stretches of wilderness.

If you’re planning a coastal road trip, we highly recommend booking a night or two at a cozy AirBNB or chic seaside property in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Santa Barbara, Malibu, or Laguna Beach.

You can bask in that Californian sunshine and admire the rugged seashore. Monterey is a well-known destination; however, it is extremely touristy so we recommend staying in Carmel instead for more privacy.

➤ Mountain escapes

For the ultimate mountainous escape, break up your itinerary by lodging in the enormous Yosemite National Park, Death Valley National Park or the Sequoia National Forest.

Palm Springs, on the other hand, offers a retro gateway to the wonders of the Sonoran Desert — and boasts hot springs, stylish hotels, and spas. Alternatively, look into the ski hotels and resorts around Lake Tahoe if you enjoy cooler climates.

➤ Wine-cations

Wine lovers would enjoy a trip to the wine regions. Napa, Calistoga, and St Helena are good places to start. For a quieter and more secluded experience, you may want to check out quaint towns nearby like Glen Ellen. Serious foodies would not want to miss Healdsburg or Yountville, which has more Michelin stars than any other town in the USA!!

Pro tip: To get the best deals on accommodations, make your bookings in advance, especially if you’re visiting during the busier months. We use TripAdvisor to compare pricings across hotel websites and 3rd party booking platforms, then decide where to book based on the prices.

What to eat in California?

in-n-out burger california

Many people associate In-N-Out burgers with California. It’s true that the chain started in the Los Angeles suburb of Baldwin Park, but what exactly is Californian cuisine?

The type of dishes you’ll find in California focuses on fresh, simple preparation and the use of local and sustainable ingredients. You can also expect to find food that is creative, fusion, and health-conscious (think acai bowls and avocado toast).

With 89 Michelin star restaurants in California (as of 2022), the world’s best restaurants are at your fingertips – the most in the country! You’ll certainly have no shortages of high-quality restaurants to try if you fancy a memorable dining experience. Just be sure to secure a table well in advance!

In the southern region, the exceptionally rich Mexican culture gives rise to Mexican-inspired cuisine (aka Cal-Mex), thanks to the big Mexican population! In contrast to Tex-Mex which is largely beef and pork, Cal-Mex uses more chicken and seafood. It also tastes lighter, not as spicy and more subtle, compared to the bolder, spicier flavours in Tex-Mex dishes. Alberto’s Mexican Food is a popular chain in SoCal – it’s affordable, authentic, and its carne asada fries are to-die-for!

How much would a week-long California road trip cost?

Planning a road trip to California and wondering how much a 7-day trip will cost? It depends on what sort of trip you want to experience, what kind of traveller you are and what experiences you want to enjoy.

We always plan our trip around food and don’t mind paying a little more for nice restaurants and unique boutique hotels so our budget reflects that. But there are plenty of choices for cheaper food and accommodations if you are working with a small budget.

Here are some general guidelines to help you ballpark the cost of your trip:

Accommodations: This will probably be the most expensive part of your budget. For most city stays, if you choose to stay in a mid-range hotel you can expect to pay at least $200-400 per night. For luxury accommodations, it ranges between $500-800 per night depending on the season and location. Costs will be lower for more remote destinations.

Rental car and gas: Rental car is essential for a California road trip, and gas is something you won’t want to overlook when planning your vacation budget! The average cost to rent a car in California is approximately $170 per day. A gas estimator like GasBuddy is handy in giving you a rough estimate of how much your trip will cost.

Food: You can eat at less expensive places or splurge on more expensive options. We would budget around $50-$70 per person per day for eating out at mid-level places (not including drinks and tips).

Activities and entertainment: Factor in the tours you plan to go on during your trip. Do you plan to rent a kayak? Are you going for a wine tasting? Are you joining a whale watching tour? Are you spending a day at Universal Studio?

For a comfortable budget, we’d suggest starting with at least $250-300 per person per day. This is with two people sharing accommodations and a rental car. You will then factor in extra costs for tours and activities you plan to take.

What practicalities do you need to beware of in California?

Make note of these few things prior to visiting California:

✓ Electricity

Electrical voltage in the USA is 120v, with power plugs of Type A & B (two pin or three pin).

If you’re coming from much of the rest of the world, including Europe, the UK or Asia, you will definitely need a travel adaptor.

Most electronics like laptops and phone chargers accept a universal voltage whereas higher power devices like hair dryers do not. However, it is always a good practice to check if your equipment or devices support the 120v supply.

✓ Internet Access

You can find free WiFi at most hotels, cafes, and restaurants.

If you need constant access to the internet, we recommend buying a travel SIM, either in the form of a physical SIM or an eSIM. Please note that this will require your phone to be unlocked. We have personally tried TravelSim and KnowRoaming before, both provide eSIM service. Between the two, KnowRoaming has more affordable plans.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in California. Pretty much any restaurant or bar will serve tap water for free, though you might need to specifically ask for it.

✓ Car safety

Car break-ins are a huge concern in California, especially in big cities like San Francisco. One piece of advice that every Californian would give you is to never leave things in your car–not even your phone cable!

What documents do you need to travel to California?

For travellers coming from outside the USA, you’ll need to prepare the following documents before you travel to California:

  • A valid passport for 6 months starting from the day of the arrival;
  • A visitor visa or ESTA to get into the United States (Canadians don’t require either to enter USA);
  • Proof of vaccination;
  • An international driving license if you plan on driving in California;
  • A credit card;
  • A travel insurance that covers both medical emergencies as well as trip cancellation and interruption. This is optional and always good to have as you never know what could happen.

What to pack for your road trip to California?

Here are some essentials to pack for your trip:

  • eSIM: we’ve personally used KnowRoaming (based in Canada) for its eSIM service and it worked smoothly for our trip.  Airalo is also a great choice!
  • Water bottle
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Camera: consider a compact, lightweight camera like GoPro for outdoor adventures

For more details, check out our comprehensive California packing list.

What souvenirs to bring back from California?

Want to bring a piece of California back with you? Here are some (edible) gift ideas for you!

  • Napa Valley wine
  • Chocolates from See’s Candies or Ghirardelli
  • Salt water taffy
  • California olive oil: we’ve heard great things about Olive Crush and Olivina
  • Palo Alto Firefighters pepper sauce
  • Spices from Oaktown Spice Shop

17 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in California

Written by Lana Law and Michael Law Updated May 26, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

California is one of the top vacation destinations in the United States, both for Americans and international travelers. Vibrant cities, beaches, amusement parks, and natural wonders like nowhere else on Earth make California an intriguing land of possibilities for travel.

The gateway cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles are home to some of the state's most well-known sites, from the Golden Gate Bridge to Hollywood and Disneyland. This is also where many of the top cultural attractions can be found.

But the national parks, encompassing mountains, forests, desert, coastal areas, and islands, offer their own outstanding experiences. The tallest and largest trees on Earth, the largest alpine lake in North America, and the famous sites of Yosemite, offer once in a lifetime opportunities for outdoor adventure.

Whether you are interested in doing a road trip, taking a family vacation, enjoying a city escape, or just looking to do some sightseeing, begin with our list of the top attractions in California.

1. San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge

2. yosemite national park, 3. disneyland, 4. death valley national park, 6. lake tahoe, 7. sequoia and kings canyon national parks, 8. redwood national and state parks, 9. joshua tree national park, 10. universal studios hollywood, 11. hearst castle, 12. santa catalina island, 13. channel islands national park, 14. the getty center los angeles, 15. palm springs aerial tramway, 16. griffith observatory, 17. uss midway museum.

San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge

One of the most beautiful cities in America, San Francisco should be on everyone's must-see list. The ocean and hills provide a stunning natural setting, but the quaint neighborhoods, historic sites, green spaces, inspiring cultural institutions, and relaxed attitude are what truly make this city special.

The iconic Golden Gate Bridge is one of the key sights and what many people call to mind when they think of the San Francisco, and even California. The orange frame against the blue water of San Francisco Bay, or rising out of the fog that often covers the area is an unforgettable sight. You can appreciate the bridge from afar or, for a more personal experience, drive over it, walk on it, or even bike across it.

Other popular tourist attractions include Fisherman's Wharf and the infamous Alcatraz Island. This former jail is now a national park and well worth a visit. Ferries leave for the island from Pier 33 near Fisherman's Wharf.

If you have time to explore the city and are up for a little exercise, see some of the sights on foot . Families traveling with children will find a world of activities to entertain youngsters and even older children with our article on things to do with kids in San Francisco .

Yosemite Falls

Yosemite National Park in Northern California is one of the United States' most scenic and most visited national parks. The mountains, valleys, rivers, and spectacular waterfalls have drawn tourists, artists, and athletes here for decades. For nature lovers, a visit here is one of the best things to do in California .

Most of the key sights and things to do in Yosemite National Park are in Yosemite Valley. Carved by glaciers during the last ice age, the granite walls and huge waterfalls are some of the most outstanding features in the park. This is where you'll find the big name attractions, like Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and El Capitan.

View of Half Dome, Vernal Fall, and Nevada Fall from Glacier Point

Beyond the Valley are the Tioga Road and the Glacier Point Road, both of which offer access to alpine areas, lookout points, and incredible views. Sometimes overlooked by tourists but also definitely worth seeing are the giant sequoias. The largest stand is located in Mariposa Grove, in the southern part of the park.

One of the best ways to explore Yosemite is to get out into the landscape on some of the incredible hiking trails . These range from easy walks along streams and lakes to life-altering trails that will take you to the tops of mountain peaks and to famous landmark sites. If you are spending a few nights and want to set up here for a while, you'll also find a number of outstanding campgrounds in Yosemite and the surrounding area .

Disneyland

Disneyland, located in Anaheim, is California's premier family destination and one of the top family vacation destinations in the US . This massive amusement park is home to all kinds of rides, games, shows, and entertainment, complete with restaurants and hotels. The park is a combination of theme rides and recreated worlds and cultures. You can find shows and other entertainment designed for both children and adults.

Long line ups and wait times have been reduced somewhat by the invention of FastPass+, which gives you the ability to book specific ride times, a hug with a character, and entertainment events. However, when kids are out of school, either for the summer, Christmas, spring break, or any other holiday, you can be sure that the park will be very busy.

Keep in mind there is more to Disneyland than just the parks. The entire Disneyland resort experience features hotels, dining, shopping at the Downtown Disney District, and the Disney Adventure Park. Although the parks are definitely what your children are here to see, you'll find something fun for everyone in the family.

Sand dunes in Death Valley National Park

Death Valley National Park contains some of California's most inhospitable terrain, with extreme heat that has left this desert area strangely beautiful. Salt fields, dry parched land, sand dunes, mountains, unique rock formations, and a lake that lies below sea level create a unique landscape in this remote valley.

Some of the easiest to reach highlights in Death Valley are the sand dunes near Stove Pipe Wells, Badwater Basin, Zabriskie Point, and Dantes View. These and others are all easy to reach with a regular vehicle. If you have a 4WD vehicle, you can head out to more remote places like The Race Track.

View from Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park

Death Valley can be done as a day trip from Las Vegas, Nevada , but there is so much to do here, you may want to plan on spending more time. You can drive through the park and stop at lookouts; hike short trails; see the ruins of the valley's former industry; and even paddle in the shallow Badwater Lake, if there is any water in the lake at that time.

Big Sur

This beautiful stretch along the Central Coast of California offers a chance to get back to nature. Camping and hiking at Garrapata State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park are some of the best places for these pursuits.

Big Sur begins about four miles south of Carmel in Yankee Point and stretches along the Highway No. 1 as far as Salmon Cove, some 17 miles north of San Simeon. This scenic road offers splendid views over the picturesque coastline. To the east stretches a true wilderness - the Santa Lucia Mountains and Ventana Forests, with more than 220 miles of trails.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a great place for hikers, sunbathers, and those looking for a nature escape. The park has camping facilities and, for anyone looking for a little more comfort, the Big Sur Lodge offers a peaceful retreat in a superb location. One of the highlights in the park is Pfeiffer Falls, which is reached by the Valley View Trail. A branch off this trail leads to the Valley Overlook with views that extend to the ocean and the Big Sur River Valley.

Garrapata State Park is another popular area of Big Sur. The main attraction here is Garrapata Beach, a long, wide, crescent-shaped stretch of golden sand. Waves here can be big, and it may not be the best for swimming but it's great for taking a stroll and soaking up the sun. For those looking to get a little exercise, there are also day hiking trails in the park providing fabulous views of the coastline, mountains, and redwoods.

Lake Tahoe

Stunning Lake Tahoe lies high in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is a popular year-round vacation destination in California. Lake Tahoe is about more than just the lake, it's the forests and mountains, small towns, and multitude of activities the area offers.

The blue lake, with its turquoise coves and surrounding mountains, is a summer playground for boaters, beach goers, campers, and nature lovers. The beautiful beaches and shallow coves are some of the main draws for families visiting the area in summer. Places like D.H. Bliss State Park and Kings Beach State Recreation Area are popular beaching destinations around Lake Tahoe.

Kayak on the beach at D.H. Bliss State Park

You'll find outstanding hiking trails for all abilities in the mountains and along the shoreline. Campgrounds in the area are also excellent, with many in beachfront locations or wooded areas. Much of the summertime action is centered around the beaches. In winter, the focus shifts to the ski resorts.

Lake Tahoe is also California's premiere skiing destination, with several popular ski resorts . During the winter, skiers from across the United States descend on the area to take advantage of the incredible terrain and great snow conditions.

Sequoia National Park

Home to the largest trees on Earth, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are bucket-list destinations . The sequoias here are the largest living things in the world, and many of them are more than 2,000 years old, with some even more than 3,000 years old.

These adjacent parks cover an area of mountains with majestic granite peaks, deep gorges, lakes, rivers, and forests, but they are quite different from each other. If you are planning on visiting both parks, you will need at least a couple of days.

Although both parks are home to the giant sequoias, Sequoia National Park is arguably the best place to visit these ancient wonders. Easy walking trails, many of them paved, meander through the trees and provide easy access to the major sites. This park is also home to Mt. Whitney, which at 14,495 feet is the highest mountain in the US (apart from Alaska).

You can find some beautiful campgrounds in Sequoia National Park , many of which are well positioned for visiting the trees and other attractions, like Moro Rock, and the famous giant sequoia known as General Sherman Tree.

Kings Canyon National Park is more rugged and wild, with jagged peaks, roaring rivers, and remote sections where you can escape the crowds and enjoy nature. This is a popular park for hiking. You'll also find some incredible campgrounds in Kings Canyon , both close to the trees, in the Grant Grove area, and in the Cedar Grove area at the far end of the 26-mile Kings Canyon Scenic Byway.

Redwood National and State Parks

Walking through a forest of giant redwoods, towering more than 300 feet above you, feels like entering another era. Descendants of trees from the Jurassic Period, these are the tallest trees on the planet, and they are truly one of California's greatest treasures.

These jointly managed parks, which include Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, stretch out along a spectacular portion of Northern California Coast. Each offers something a little different, but in all of them you can find great hiking trails and beautiful campgrounds .

Landscape in Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua trees bring a type of magic to this otherwise lunar-like landscape, where giant boulders and rock formations create wild shapes that capture the imagination. The park covers 800,000 acres and offers a range of diverse sites that include much more than just the Joshua trees.

The Cholla Cactus Garden , where chollas stretch out endlessly along the hillside to the mountains beyond, the ruins of the historic Keys Ranch , the giant palms of the Lost Palms Oasis, and the vista from over 5,000 feet at Keys View are just some of the highlights. Also don't miss Skull Rock ; a huge rock resembling an alien skull.

Joshua Trees in Joshua Tree National Park

If you are going to stay awhile, you may want to consider spending a night under the stars and trees at one of the fabulous campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park .

Joshua Tree National Park is less than a three-hour drive from Los Angeles and less than an hour from Palm Springs.

Video camera

This amusement park and movie studio is one of the most popular attractions in California, and the perfect place for families with older children and teens. Rides and sets are based on famous movies, with everything from shockingly realistic simulator rides to roller coasters, and much more.

You can tour huge sets on studio tours. Some of the most popular experiences in the park are The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Fast and Furious - Supercharged, Jurassic World, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, and The Walking Dead Attraction, among others. You'll also find dining, shows, shopping opportunities, and various events held throughout the year.

Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle, officially known as the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, was started in 1919 and built over a 28-year period, resulting in a mix of architectural styles that make it quirky and stately all at the same time. Built by newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst, the 165-room castle was never completed.

It sits atop a hill at an elevation of 1,600 feet and offers fantastic views out over the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Range. One of the major attractions here is the immense collection of art. At one time, the castle was home to the world's largest private zoo, and to this day, zebras and other exotic wildlife can be seen wandering the grounds.

The castle is located almost exactly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Drive time from either city is approximately four hours.

Santa Catalina Island

Part of the Channel Islands, Santa Catalina lies about 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The island is a popular destination with boaters and day trippers. Avalon is the main population center and where most of the action is centered. On the other end of the island is the much smaller village of Two Harbours.

While most people come to Santa Catalina Island to wander around and enjoy a day of leisure, other popular things to do include glass bottom boat tours, scuba diving, kayaking, and parasailing. You can reach the island by ferry from San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Dana Point.

Channel Islands National Park

Channel Islands National Park, made up of five individual islands, is a great place to see wildlife and a little undisturbed nature. Having always been isolated from the mainland, the islands have developed independently, and as a result, have many endemic animals.

The islands are located off the Southern California coast and are only accessible by park concessionaire boats and planes, or private boats. You can learn about current conditions and arrange transport at the mainland visitor centers located in Ventura and Santa Barbara.

The Getty Center

The Getty Center is one of the premier museums in the United States. The museum holds treasures by great artists like Monet and Van Gogh, along with sculptures and other beautiful forms of art prior to 1900.

A visit here is also about the architecture and grounds of the museum itself. The building flows and undulates in a shimmering curtain of white, while out front, intricate gardens and waterfalls complete the scene. Be sure to check out the amazing views out over Los Angeles from one of the many patios.

Admission to the Getty Center is free.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

If you've ever wanted to lie by the pool in the morning and make snow angels in the afternoon, put a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway on your list of California things to do. California's desert regions are all about elevation. The higher you go, the colder it gets. In the spring, the pool and snow combo is easily accomplished.

The tramway runs for two miles and ascends up to an elevation of 8,516 feet on the slopes of Mount Jacinto. The tramway is unique in its design; each of the trams rotate as they ascend, allowing for uninterrupted views across a 360-degree panorama. In fact, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest of its kind in the world.

At the top, choose to be active by walking or hiking on the 50 miles of trails, or more sedate by enjoying a spectacular view over lunch or dinner at one of the two restaurants. This area offers some of the best hiking around Palm Springs .

Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles city skyline at sunset

One of California's greatest free attractions is the Griffith Observatory. Perched high on Mount Hollywood and overlooking the city of Los Angeles, this iconic California attraction offers not only fantastic views out over the city but also the opportunity to learn about the heavens.

Inside the observatory are six galleries devoted to all aspects of space and how we observe it. In addition to the galleries are the public telescopes, allowing you to view the heavens in a way you've never imagined.

Even if all that doesn't interest you, the parking lot is an excellent spot to get a photo of the Hollywood sign.

USS Midway Museum

If you've ever wanted to explore a giant aircraft carrier and find yourself in San Diego, you are in luck. Moored right in the center of the action, the USS Midway Museum is a real-life WWII ship that has been converted to a hands-on museum.

An ideal family thing to do in San Diego , this is no boring museum. Here, you and your crew will be walking down narrow passageways, climbing ladders, and descending into the bowels of the ship. Throughout the ship are more than 60 exhibits, 29 restored aircraft, a theater, and flight simulators. Plan for three to four hours for your visit.

It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling solo or with a group on a California tour. When visiting California — or any other country in the world — make sure to get travel insurance to protect your health and safety.

In my opinion, the best travel medical insurance for travelers is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country).

California Travel Guide FAQ

Below, find answers to frequently asked questions about traveling in California .

Q: What is the best month to go to California?

There’s really no one perfect time to visit California. The best time to visit definitely depends on your itinerary since the state is so large and has such diverse climates.

That said, the summer is usually a safe bet for visiting Northern California, the Central Coast, and Southern California.

Desert destinations like Palm Springs and Death Valley are better to visit in the cooler months, as temperatures can spike above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.

If you want to avoid the crowds and still enjoy the California sunshine, consider visiting in the fall, a season that’s less popular with tourists but still pretty beach-friendly.

Q: How much money do you need for a trip to California?

Your budget will depend on your itinerary. Travelers tend to spend more in big cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco than they do in smaller towns like Santa Cruz.

The average traveler spends about $199 per day in California on accommodations, transportation, food, entertainment, and other expenses.

There are also plenty of ways to cut down costs by staying in hostels or AirBnBs over hotels, checking out food trucks and stocking up on groceries instead of eating every meal out, and using public transportation in major cities.

Q: How many days do you need in California?

If you’re planning on doing a full tour of the state, you’ll want to plan for 7 to 10 days away. Moreover, you’ll want to spend at least two days each in the major cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles to see all the top attractions.

From there, you can spend the rest of your time driving up (or down) the Pacific Coast, stopping in towns like Santa Barbara and Monterey for some great beach time and hiking opportunities.

You’ll also want to schedule in a day or two to visit one of the state’s national parks like:

  • Yosemite National Park, where you can hike Sentinel Dome to Glacier Point , Vernal and Nevada Falls via the Mist Trail , or the Columbia Rock Trail
  • Sequoia National Park, home to the Lakes Trail
  • Joshua Tree National Park, home to the Lost Horse Mine Trail , Hidden Valley Nature Trail , and Ryan Mountain

Keep reading for more great road trip ideas!

Q: What are the best things to do in California?

No trip to the USA would be complete without mentioning California, and here’s why:

California has a lot to offer nature lovers with nine National Parks, the most of any state in the U.S. These parks also highlight the state’s natural diversity, ranging from iconic deserts like Joshua Tree to breathtaking forests like Redwood National Park.

You also shouldn’t miss Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park — home to the famous James Irvine Trail .

Animal lovers will want to check out Channel Islands National Park near Ventura to see bald eagles, sea lions, and whales in their natural habitats.

And there’s nothing quite like Yosemite, with its iconic mountains, waterfalls, and rivers that look even more spectacular in person than they do in photos.

Pop culture obsessed? You’ll definitely want to spend some time in Los Angeles, the entertainment hub of the world and home of Hollywood.

Many of the major film and television studios, including Warner Bros., Universal, and Paramount Pictures, offer tours of their backlots that take you through iconic sets and give you an inside look into how movies and television shows get made. These are popular experiences whether you’re in a group or traveling to Los Angeles alone .

Want to be a part of the action?

Check out sites like Audiences Unlimited and 1Iota to get free audience tickets to a whole host of currently filming TV shows, from sitcoms to late-night talk shows. You’ll also want to take a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard; here you can visit iconic sites like the TCL Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

San Francisco also has something for every kind of traveler, from some of the world’s best hiking trails to one-of-a-kind neighborhoods. It’s also considered one of the best places for solo female travel in California .

The city is home to the largest Chinatown in the world (outside of Asia , of course), with blocks and blocks of authentic restaurants and shops that reflect the city’s diversity. See if your trip overlaps with any cultural festivals — like Lunar New Year, as you won’t want to miss the fireworks and parades through the neighborhood!

History buffs will want to take a ferry over to Alcatraz, the infamous former federal prison that was once home to Al Capone.

Looking for a little fresh air?

Drive across the famed Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods National Monument, a redwood forest with plenty of hiking trails to explore.

While you’re in the Bay Area, take a day trip over to Napa or Sonoma, two top destinations for wine lovers. Tour some amazing vineyards and taste some of the best wine the state has to offer.

You might also consider heading south to spend a weekend in Paso Robles , a stunning and delicious California wine region, or San Diego, a fun-filled city with loads of museums, nature, and beaches. Tip: If heading there, check out these sumptuous hotels with jacuzzi tubs in San Diego !

Q: How do I prepare for a trip to California?

The answer to this question depends on your itinerary, but there are a few tips that will serve you well wherever you go in California.

Sun protection is an absolute must for any trip to California. The Golden State is known for its sunny weather and even if it doesn’t feel that hot outside, you’ll want to protect yourself. Stock up on SPF, remember your sunglasses, and wear a hat if you’re going to spend a lot of time outdoors at the beach or in the parks.

Remember the iconic words of Smokey the Bear: “Only you can prevent wildfires.” Wildfires are a major issue in a dry state like California and have only gotten more severe in recent years.

If you’re going camping, make sure you know how to safely build a campfire and remember that you’ll need a permit to build an open fire on federal land. Even if you’re not planning on building a campfire, there are plenty of ways you can prevent fires. Be mindful of where you put out cigarettes, report any unattended fires, and be aware of current wildfire risks where you’re traveling.

Also, be sure to budget for high taxes during your trip. The state sales tax is 6% and local taxes can add even more to that, leading to a tax of 10% in some areas. While some items like food are untaxed, it’s important to keep this in mind, particularly if you’re not used to paying sales tax.

Q: What is the best California road trip ?

There are so many great road trips in California! One not to miss is Highway 395, starting in Los Angeles and ending in Mammoth Lakes. There is so much nature and history to explore along the way.

Along with numerous museums, like the California Route 66 Museum and the Maturango Museum, you can enjoy outdoor adventure at spots like the Fossil Falls Scenic Area. Here, you can see the remnants of a giant basalt lava flow that occurred somewhere between 400,000 years ago and 10,000 years ago.

Another great option: planning a Big Sur road trip itinerary full of scenic viewpoints, hikes, beaches, and more! you can also easily add on a weekend in Paso Robles or a Solvang itinerary !

Q: Where is California?

California is a state in the western United States in North America. It shares borders with Oregon (north), Nevada and Arizona (east), and Mexico (south).

Q: Are credit cards accepted in California?

Hailed as the signature dish of San Francisco, this seafood stew was developed by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s. Cioppino is traditionally made from the catch of the day, like shrimp, squid, scallops, clams, crab and fish, then melded with a tomato and wine sauce. Be sure to mop up every last drop with a piece of crusty sourdough bread. Delicious!

Known as ‘California’s Cut’, tri-tip is a Santa Maria style barbecue that takes a triangle cut of top-block sirloin and grills it to perfection. Pair it with Santa-Maria style salsa and grilled garlic bread and you’ve got the ultimate Californian dish.
