The 4th of July is one of our favorite holidays. Between the promise of warm weather, fireworks and that extra day off work, it just seems like a no-brainer to get away. But sometimes life happens, and we forget to plan that vacation (guilty as charged). Or, perhaps, you’re just a leave-it-to-the-last-possible-second type of traveler. That’s OK, too. Because it’s not too late to celebrate Independence Day with a fabulous trip. To help make planning a breeze (time is ticking, after all), we’ve rounded up the best last-minute 4th of July getaways that are easily accessible from major U.S. cities .

These Are the Most Popular Summer Vacation Spots of 2022

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - Boats on the sandy shoreline in Greenport, NY.

1. From New York City: Greenport, NY

  • Getting there: 2 hours 45 minutes from New York City
  • Where to stay: The Menhaden (from $428/night) , Harborfront Inn at Greenport (from $275/night) , 1820s Whaling Captain's Home (from $625/night; sleeps 5)

Everyone knows about the Hamptons —and the prices and availability (or lack thereof) very much reflect that. Equally accessible via LIRR train from Penn Station, the North Fork of Long Island is far more affordable with arguably less attitude and an abundance of pleasurable pursuits. Our go-to town? Greenport. This historic village delights with a blend of quaint inns, farm-to-table restaurants, cute shops and breezy bars with ocean views. Activities range from waterside yoga and wine tasting at family-owned vineyards to fishing and tours of oyster farms. Why not play “Yankee Doodle” and give the whole experience a patriotic soundtrack?

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - An empty beach at sunset in Malibu, CA.

2. From Los Angeles: Malibu, CA

  • Getting there: 40 minutes from Los Angeles
  • Where to stay: The Surfrider Hotel (from $399/night), Malibu Beach Inn (from $589/night), The Malibu Suites #3 ($313/night, sleeps 4)

Malibu may be 32 miles from DTLA, but it feels like another world. Perched on either side of the Pacific Coast Highway, this laid-back SoCal beach town is everything you dream of for a summer weekend escape. First off, we’ve already made the case that it’s easy to get to (yes, even if you factor in Los Angeles traffic). Malibu also has pristine beaches, gorgeous hiking trails, revamped motels that are Instagram gold and wonderful restaurants. Love a casual spot? Hit up Malibu Farm Pier Cafe .

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - Boats on the water on Lake Geneva, WI.

3. From Chicago: Lake Geneva, WI

  • Getting there: 1 hour 25 minutes from Chicago
  • Where to stay: The Ridge Hotel , Lost Oak on Center ($171/night, sleeps 6) , Beautiful Lakefront Home ($345/night sleeps 8)

Chicago boasts gorgeous weather in summer. But to fully enjoy the sunshine and warmer temps, you’ve got to escape the city and get out on the water. Insert Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. (While folks outside of the Midwest might not associate the Badger State with beaches, locals know the state is filled to the brim with outdoor adventures and lots of waterfronts.) Less than 90 minutes from the Windy City, this beloved summer destination is a magnet for travelers seeking fun in the form of waterfront recreation, marveling at Gilded Age mansions and the Geneva Lake Shore Path. What more could you possibly need for a fantastic 4th of July getaway?

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - An overhead shot of where the ocean meets the bustling shore in Encinitas, CA.

4. From San Diego: Encinitas, CA

  • Getting there: 30 minutes from San Diego
  • Where to stay: Inn at Moonlight Beach (from $428/night) , Beach Cottage ($395/night, sleeps 7) , Vintage Bungalow ($365/night, sleeps 6)

San Diego is already a totally vacation-worthy locale in its own right. But we suppose if you’re fortunate enough to call this sun-kissed SoCal metropolis home all the time, you might want to switch it up for the 4th of July. Cruise up the coast on Highway 101 for 25 miles and you’ll hit Encinitas, a laid-back beach town that’s long been known as a surfer's paradise. These days, it attracts an even broader swath of visitors who come to ride the waves, browse the record shops and eat killer burritos.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - Rocky mountains and cacti in Fredericksburg, TX.

5. From Houston: Fredericksburg, TX

  • Getting there: 3 hours 50 minutes from Houston
  • Where to stay: Vineyard Trail Cottages (from $164/night) , Lone Star Cabin No. 4 ($242/night, sleeps 4) , Quaint Cottage ($235/night, sleeps 5)

What makes Fredericksburg such a great vacation spot for Houstonians over 4th of July and really the entire summer? Well, for starters, its location in the heart of Texas wine country means that beautiful scenery and terroir-driven sips are a given. The thing many people don’t realize about Fredericksburg is its German heritage runs deep. Chowing down on bratwurst and schnitzel and tossing back a frosty stein feels like a fun twist on the usual hot dogs and Bud Light. Round out our Independence Day holiday by hiking Enchanted Rock.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A lush green valley at sunrise in Sonoma County, CA.

6. From San Francisco: Sonoma Valley, CA

  • Getting there: 60 minutes from San Francisco
  • Where to stay: The Lodge at Sonoma Resort Autograph Collection (from $489/night) , MacArthur Place (from $599/night) , Sonoma Berry Blossom Farm ($285/night, sleeps 3)

An hour outside of San Francisco lies the picture-perfect town of Sonoma (aka a less crowded and more wallet-friendly alternative to Napa ). It’s not your typical fireworks, parades and hot-dog-eating-contest type of Independence Day trip. Instead of the traditional 4th of July trappings, travelers can expect to sip award-winning vino at gorgeous vineyards, savor delicious food made by world-class chefs that highlights locally grown ingredients, amble around the quaint downtown and soak in the relaxing wine country ambiance. Definitely beats warm beer and burnt burgers, right?

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A long desolate road stretching toward the mountains in Steamboat Springs, CO. The sky is bright and there's green grass for miles.

7. From Denver: Steamboat Springs, CO

  • Getting there: 3 hours from Denver
  • Where to stay: Homewood Suites by Hilton Steamboat Springs (from $196/night) , Remodeled Condo ($199/night, sleeps 4) , Log Cabin ($600/night, sleeps 10)

Denver is the perfect jumping-off point for exploring so many picturesque places in Colorado . For an easy and epic 4th of July getaway from the Mile High City, set your sights on Steamboat Springs. Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, this off-the-beaten-path yet totally accessible destination has lots to eat, drink and do. There are scenic hiking trails, tons of great restaurants, breweries and, of course, the fabled Steamboat Gondola. It’s typically less crowded in the summer than some of its big-name neighbors—though we can’t make any promises come Independence Day.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A cliffside waterfall pouring into a lake in Dripping Springs, TX.

8. From Austin: Dripping Springs, TX

  • Getting there: 30 minutes from Austin
  • Where to stay: Courtyard by Marriott Austin Dripping Springs (from $149/night) , Restored Historic Home ($247/night, sleeps 6) , Hill Country Retreat ($299/night, sleeps 6)

For those that aren’t local, a trip to Austin probably sounds like a pretty awesome way to spend the 4th of July weekend. But we totally get that when you take up residence somewhere, it’s nice to get away every now and again. Just 30 minutes outside of Austin (close enough that you could totally go for the day or even the afternoon) sits Dripping Springs, a Texas Hill Country town that’s packed with natural beauty, lick-your-lips-good BBQ, distilleries, breweries, rodeos and some refreshing swimming holes to help beat the heat.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - Rocky mountains and plains in Flagstaff, AZ. The mountains are banded red and meet the sky.

9. From Phoenix: Flagstaff, AZ

  • Getting there: 2 hours 30 minutes from Phoenix
  • Where to stay: Little America Flagstaff (from $149/night) , Entire Cabin (from $203/night, sleeps 10) , Townhouse in Flagstaff (from $145/night, sleeps 4)

Need a break from the Phoenix heat? We don't blame you. Pack a bag, hop in the car (probably a good idea to turn on the AC) and hightail it to Flagstaff. It’s quite literally the coolest place in all of Arizona with summer temperatures averaging in the low 80s. This city in the high country mountains is known as the gateway to Grand Canyon National Park and the San Francisco Peaks. Flagstaff is also home to ponderosa pine forests, an extinct volcano, many breweries and even the world’s largest ice cream cone factory.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A few scattering buildings and lighthouses on the shore in Cape Cod, MA at sunset.

10. From Boston: Cape Cod, MA

  • Getting there: 1 hour 15 minutes from Boston
  • Where to stay: Chatham Bars Inn (from $515/night) , Beach Breeze Inn (from $154/night) , Lands End Inn (call for rates)

Cape Cod has long been considered the *it* summer destination on the East Coast . The Kennedys famously have a compound in Hyannis Port, which really says it all. If you want a classic New England escape that feels both posh and totally patriotic, Cape Cod is most certainly the move. (Yes, a white swimsuit, blue linen button-down and SPF are required.) Walk along the sandy beaches, admire the coastal cottages and historic, mansion-sized second homes, go gallery hopping in Provincetown and stop by Devil's Purse Brewing Company for a cold Kölsch-style beer.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A rushing river between two shores that are covered in evergreen trees in Leavenworth, WA.

11. From Seattle: Leavenworth, WA

  • Getting there: 2 hours 15 minutes from Seattle
  • Where to stay: Bavarian Lodge (from $247/night) , Aventyr Hus ($200/night, sleeps 4) , River’s Echo Condo ($350/night, sleeps 6)

Convinced a trip to a Bavarian-style village isn’t possible this late in the game?  Leavenworth will have you singing a different (maybe not quite star-spangled but still catchy) tune. Situated in the Cascade Mountains, this storybook town transports travelers to Germany with its enchanting architecture, sausages, craft beer and Nutcracker Museum. Is it the most patriotic option for Independence Day? Not by a long shot. But we’re into the idea of an out-of-the-ordinary locale.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A foggy valley with yellow trees sitting just below the fog. It has a warm tone and seems to be deep in the woods in Willamette Valley, OR.

12. From Portland: Willamette Valley, OR

  • Getting there: 50 minutes from Portland
  • Where to stay: Atticus Hotel (inquire for rates) , Downtown McMinnville Cottage ($175/night, sleeps 4) , Charming Bungalow ($250/night, sleeps 4)

Drive less than an hour from Portland and you’ll arrive at an idyllic destination called Willamette Valley. For those not familiar with Oregon's premier wine region, it rivals Burgundy (yes, Burgundy as in France) for pinot noir production. Besides incredible vino—and the myriad wineries, verdant vineyards and tasting rooms that come with the territory—it’s a heavy hitter in the world of farm-to-fork food with many award-winning eateries that showcase the best seasonal and local bounty from the area. Add to that, independently owned shops, cafes serving fresh-roasted coffee, hiking trails and day spas.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A person stands on top of a mountain looking out at the view of other mountains and the sky in Asheville, NC.

13. From Charlotte: Asheville, NC

  • Getting there: 2 hours 15 minutes from Charlotte
  • Where to stay: Homewood Suites by Hilton Asheville (from $149/night) , Creekside Cottage ($217/night, sleeps 4) , Luxury Riverfront Cabin ($463/night, sleeps 4)

We love a mountain town —and Asheville definitely fits the bill. (OK, fine it’s a city, but the small-town spirit is strong.) Anyway, this offbeat gem in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains has oodles of quirky charm and more activities than you could possibly pack into a long weekend. Choose between hundreds of hiking and biking trails or catch a concert at one of the live music venues. And don’t forget to hit up the many studios and galleries that breathe new life into the old factory buildings in the Downtown Art District.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A crystal clear lake sits below a forest and old bridge in Hocking Hills, OH.

14. From Columbus: Hocking Hills, OH

  • Getting there: 60 minutes from Columbus
  • Where to stay: Hocking Hills Inn (call for rates) , Black Bear Retreat ($169/night, sleeps 2) , Rockview Cottage ($159/night, sleeps 4)

You’d be hard-pressed to find natural beauty that rivals Hocking Hills just outside a major city (or anywhere for that matter). That’s a huge reason we’re so smitten with this real-life Eden located 57 miles from Columbus. Beloved by outdoorsy travelers, Hocking Hills offers a breathtaking mix of caves, gushing waterfalls, rocky gorges and dense forests. Hiking and biking are popular activities. It’s also a great spot for guided belly-boat fishing treks and more leisurely afternoons of casting a line. Just be sure to leave some space on the grill for the catch of the day.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A shoreline in Atlantic City, NJ speckled with people and lined with some high rise buildings.

15. From Philadelphia: Atlantic City, NJ

  • Getting there: 60 minutes from Philadelphia
  • Where to stay: Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa (from $109/night) , Ocean Casino Resort (from $179/night) , Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City (from $139/night)

Las Vegas isn’t the only place to roll the dice. The OG gambling and entertainment mecca, Atlantic City brings a little bit of everything to the table. Whether you’re keen on playing blackjack, unwinding with spa treatments, feasting on culinary delights prepared at restaurants helmed by big-name chefs, catching some rays, seeing a concert or watching the fireworks from the boardwalk, this buzzing Jersey Shore destination delivers. And with a slew of casino hotels, staying like a high roller doesn’t mean spending all your winnings on a room.

Last Minute Fourth of July Getaways - A photograph of a river shoreline in Augusta, Georgia. It features an antique bridge, boats and a number of high rise buildings under a blue sky with some clouds.

16. From Atlanta: Augusta, GA

  • Getting there: 2 hours 15 minutes from Atlanta
  • Where to Stay: SpringHill Suites by Marriott Augusta (from $184/night) , Sadie’s House ($99/night, sleeps 6) , Cottage in North Augusta ($64/night, sleeps 4)

If you’re looking for an escape from the urban hubbub of Atlanta without leaving behind all the comforts of the city, Augusta has got you covered. This charming and oh-so scenic destination is Georgia’s third largest and second oldest city, and history buffs will delight in the many attractions that speak to Augusta’s storied past—including the boyhood home of President Woodrow Wilson, the Augusta Museum of History and the Meadow Garden, a National Historic Landmark where George Walton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, once lived. Rows of beautifully restored 19th and early 20th century architecture can be found in the Augusta Historic District, and a stroll along the Savannah on the famous Augusta Riverwalk promises instant relaxation in a picturesque setting. Plus, outdoor enthusiasts will be treated to natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities galore at the Augusta Canal, Forks Area Trail System and Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Oh, and Augusta is basically the golf capital of the state, so folks who care for the sport can spend the whole weekend on one of the many putting greens if they so choose.

Run wild in sunny Las Vegas for a truly exciting last-minute getaway trip. Bright lights, buzzing casinos, notorious nightlife - this high-paced city never sleeps. Test your luck in a world-famous casino or shop for high-end fashion to wear at four-star restaurants. Watch astounding acrobats, then catch your breath beside a shimmering swimming pool. For a last-minute vacation, there's just so much to do in Vegas.

On the North Strip, gaze at the hoopla that is Las Vegas from the Stratosphere Tower. Watch waters splash at the famous Bellagio's fountains or ride the monorail to the convention center. The South Strip has all the themed casinos. Take the MGM-Mirage monorail from Mandalay Bay to the Excalibur, getting close to nature at the Mandalay Shark Reef and MGM Lion Habitat. Or stroll the street where the first casinos stood in downtown Las Vegas. This vintage area offers gambling and captivating street acts. And make sure to bring your appetite. Vegas still offers the all-you-can-eat buffets, but it also hosts some of the country's finest restaurants. Take your pick from a handful of celebrity-chef restaurants, including Wolfgang Puck's Postrio, and signature offerings by Michael Mina and Emeril Lagasse.

Washington D.C.

For a fun and easy last-minute vacation, treat yourself to a tour of Washington, D.C. See awe-inspiring monuments and picturesque colonial villages right in the heart of our nation's capital. The famous Metro transit system whisks visitors through the District, stopping near major tourist sights and traveling on into nearby Northern Virginia and Maryland. No visit to Washington, D.C. would be complete without visits to the monuments and memorials honoring the country's presidents, war veterans, and founding fathers. Since few of them are located near Metro stops, many visitors prefer to take a bus tour.

The districts many Smithsonian museums cover a wide variety of topics. Art galleries alone cover American, African and Asian art, plus modern and contemporary works and portraiture. Other favorites include the Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo. If you want to skip all that and just check out a fun neighborhood for your last-minute getaway, stroll the lovely campus of historic Georgetown University, or take a guided tour for an in-depth look. Just outside the gates, be sure to check out the area's colorful 18th-century row houses. Historic sights in the village include the C & O Canal, the Old Stone House and the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitors and residents flock to the Georgetown Flea Market on Sunday mornings in search of hidden treasure.

Last Minute Deals in NYC

The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel

New York City, New York

It might seem too big a city to accommodate a last-minute getaway trip, but never fear - because of its sheer number of attractions, New York City is actually an ideal spontaneous trip destination! It's a city of contrasts, where the 24-hour hustle and bustle balances the oases of Central Park and the quietly elegant Hudson River. Stick to one or two fun neighborhoods and you'll get your fill of the Big Apple. Short for "South of Houston"; SoHo is New York's artistic sanctuary and a fantastic area to shop, eat or just hang out. Located in lower Manhattan, it's an eclectic assortment of lofts, combining residential, commercial and gallery space. In the 1960s, artists started inhabiting lofts in the area, which were actually vacated sweatshops.

Today, these live-work units sell for millions of dollars. People are drawn to Greenwich Village by the local diversity, funky shopping, top-notch restaurants and fascinating Old New York architecture. Washington Square is one of the most romantic neighborhoods in the city. Tree-lined streets, pretty brick houses, jazz clubs, coffeehouses and sidewalk cafes - you'll find them all in the Village. Tips for a last-minute getaway: you can most easily snag theater tickets during January and February, but finding a good table at a restaurant can be easier in July and August, when New Yorkers tend to escape the city. Visit New York City between the first of the year and early April for great bargains.

It’s Not Too Late for a Fourth of July Travel Deal

Squeezed by holiday economics, what’s a last-minute, budget-minded traveler to do? Think like a contrarian: Go where the masses aren’t.

july 4 last minute travel deals

By Elaine Glusac

More than 47 million Americans are expected to travel over the Independence Day holiday between July 1 and 5, nearly matching prepandemic levels, according to AAA, the automobile owners group.

More travelers mean higher prices. The travel app Hopper said a good deal on a round-trip domestic flight over the holiday period cost $302 on average compared to $280 for the rest of the summer. AAA puts midrange hotel prices up about a third over normal rates. The rental car shortage has pushed rates up 75 percent over 2019 prices and sometimes higher, according to Autoslash , a service that finds cheap rentals, which recommends avoiding renting in Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands because of exorbitant prices. Florida might be tough, too; six of the top nine most searched destinations on Booking.com in May for summer travel were in Florida.

Squeezed by Fourth of July economics, what’s a last-minute, budget-minded traveler to do? Think like a contrarian: Go where the masses aren’t.

“Places like L.A., New York City, D.C., Austin and Chicago aren’t going to be quite as crowded as the beach, lake and national and state park destinations,” wrote Christie Hudson, a spokeswoman for Expedia, in an email. “As a result, these are also the most budget-friendly places to go for last-minute planners, showing lower average daily rates compared to 2019.”

There may also be a beach, campsite or pool in your holiday future, too, if you cast your net widely, according to the following deals and strategies for finding affordable escapes. Bear in mind that prices change often, and may have shifted since publication. And if you are priced out of the holiday, spend it planning a future trip; the Xanterra Travel Collection, which includes national park lodges, tour companies and Windstar Cruises, is holding a sale June 30 through July 8, with up to 30 percent off room rates and nearly $1,100 a person off cruises.

Shop the remainders rack

Whatever you do, you will need to dig deep to find a bargain. Some of that effort is expedited by sales listings at various travel entities centralizing their last-minute offers.

The tour company G Adventures has a summer sale with trips up to 20 percent off for travel through October. If you’re ready to pack your bag — and can fulfill all travel requirements imposed by the destination country — the company has several sale trips departing in the next week, including eight days walking on the Camino de Santiago in Spain beginning July 4 from $1,062 (Spain is open to vaccinated Americans) or a nine-day family-focused trip to Costa Rica from $1,300 a person, departing July 3 (Costa Rica is open to American visitors without testing or vaccination, but requires specific insurance that covers Covid-19 related expenses).

CheapCaribbean.com , as the name implies, exists to sell you deals. Many are packages bundling all-inclusive resorts with airfare. Its Last-Minute Vacations page has an array of offers in Mexico and the Caribbean over the holiday, among them trips to Playabachata Resort in the Dominican Republic for four nights, including airfare from $591 a person, and five nights at the BlueBay Grand Esmeralda on Mexico’s Riviera Maya from $808 a person, including airfare.

The hotel group Preferred Hotels & Resorts maintains a last-minute deals page , currently with rates from $122 at the Whitehall hotel in Houston.

Check the websites of tourism and chamber of commerce offices in your target destination for local offers. The business association of Provincetown, Mass., at the tip of Cape Cod, for example, maintains a link with last-minute lodging deals, including some over the holiday.

Hit a convention city

Large conventions are still on hold, and the cancellations are being felt across cities popular for meetings , including Orlando, Washington and Chicago, creating a bargain shopper’s opportunity.

Both Mayor Muriel Bowser and President Biden recently issued invitations to celebrate the Fourth in the nation’s capital. Hotel rates are creeping up — compact rooms at the Yotel Washington D.C. are priced from about $146 nightly for the long weekend — with the approach of the fireworks on the National Mall July 4 (free). The new Ven at Embassy Row hotel in Dupont Circle will reserve its rooftop and pool — in view of the Mall fireworks — for guests and screen the movie “Independence Day” there on July 2 (rooms from $250).

In Chicago, the newly reopened Sheraton Grand Chicago , just a few blocks from the lakefront entertainment district Navy Pier , and Millennium Park, home to the Grant Park Music Festival’s Independence Day concerts , July 2 and 3 (free), has rooms over the holiday weekend from $189.

As New York City re-emerges and prepares for July 4 fireworks on the East River (free), many hotels are putting their rooms on sale. Broadway remains dark, but the Westin New York at Times Square is back with a July deal starting at $209 a night midweek and $289 on the holiday weekend, including parking, a complimentary upgrade and late checkout. From July 3 to 6, the average nightly rate at Crowne Plaza HY36 near Hudson Yards was recently $195 (in fall, rates average $350).

Since it was recently announced that fireworks will resume at Disney World on July 1, the bookings in Orlando, a major convention city, are shifting rapidly. Visit Orlando , the city’s tourism office, maintains a list of local deals on transportation, dining and lodging, including rooms up to 25 percent off. The Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace has rooms over the holiday weekend averaging $332 a night, but if you can hold out for a weeknight later in the month, you might pay closer to $200, and still get to see the local fireworks. Over the holiday weekend, rates at Fairfield Inn & Suites Orlando Lake Buena Vista start around $176 (if you join the free Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program), and Crowne Plaza Orlando Downtown , about a mile from the city’s fireworks at Lake Eola, start around $160.

Go abroad, if you dare

If you’re game to use your passport, now might be a good time.

Time for Travel , an agency based in Davidsonville, Md., has “had great luck with booking people to places like Mexico and the Dominican Republic where a Covid test is not required to enter and the resorts are also providing free return testing,” said Sarah Kline, its president.

If you can get to Tulum on the Riviera Maya through Oct. 31, you can take advantage of a new offer from the Aloft Tulum hotel that includes a room, meals, drinks and snacks from $229 a night.

In nearby Playa del Carmen, the all-inclusive Paradisus La Perla resort has rates starting at $101 a person a night, during a brand-wide sale from Paradisus by Meliá , with discounts up to 40 percent off, running to July 5 for stays through March 2022. In the Dominican Republic, sale rates over the holiday at Paradisus Palma Real in Punta Cana start at $97 a person.

Normally starting at $425 a night, cabins at GeeJam Hotel , the stylish resort on the northeast coast of Jamaica in Port Antonio, are going for $277 a night for three-night-minimum stays July 1 through 15, including breakfast, 15 percent off other food and drink, 20 percent off spa services and complimentary use of kayaks, paddle boards and snorkeling gear. A similar deal discounts its rooms from $300 to $225. Jamaica requires visitors have proof of a negative coronavirus test.

Go where it’s hot, really hot

In normal travel times you’ll pay a lot more for desert destinations in winter than you will in summer when it can be blistering.

Take Scottsdale , Ariz., the resort-filled Phoenix neighbor, for example. Rates plunge in summer, when the pool scene is in full swing. For the holiday weekend, The Scott Resort & Spa has two sizable pools, Caribbean-accented poolside dining and rates from $199 for stays July 1 through 6, compared to rates above $300 beginning in September (use promo code JULY4).

Stay over July 4 and 5 at the colorful Saguaro Scottsdale in Scottsdale’s Old Town and pay $100 a night (use the code SUMMER21). By booking on its website, you’ll get welcome margaritas and a late checkout. Skip the rental car in favor of a loaner bike from the hotel. The shops and galleries of Old Town are easily walkable.

The area is renowned for its spas and Civana Wellness Resort & Spa offers a relatively affordable version. With a fourth-night-free promotion , rooms average $237 a night, July 2 to 6, allowing guests to take advantage of complimentary daily hikes, meditation, yoga and fitness classes.

Camp on the fringes

If you haven’t planned a camping destination for the holiday, don’t head out for the marquee national parks like Yellowstone , which has seen record numbers of visitors since last summer, or Yosemite , where advance reservations are required.

Joshua Bush, the chief executive of Avenue Two Travel , based in Bryn Mawr, Pa., has been living out of a 45-foot R.V. since December and has visited 26 national parks, often making campground reservations six to nine months in advance. He recommends targeting secondary sites like Pinnacles National Park in central California (park campsites there are sold out July 2 through 4 with availability before and after), and other parks in the system, including national lakeshores.

“The National Park Service has a fantastic app that geolocates where you are and says, yes, you might be close to Sequoia National Park, but you have national historic sites nearby that might not have a waiting time,” he said.

Other strategies include calling for reservations and telling the agent that you are willing to change campsites during your stay.

“Sometimes you can cobble together a stay, if you’re willing to move,” he added.

Booking platforms like Tentrr , Pitchup , Hipcamp , Campspot and Campendium have made it easier to find individual campsites or small, under-the-radar campgrounds.

Tentrr, where many property owners offer fully equipped campsites, including canvas tents with beds, toilets and solar-heated showers, has several sites available over the Fourth with rates starting at $135 a night, including the Catskills site Mountaintop in Hobart, N.Y., and Berkshire Mountain Hideaway in Richmond, Mass., with hiking trails just beyond the tent flaps.

Pitchup is currently showing about 45 campgrounds in the United States with availability over the holiday weekend, including Little Heaven Ranch , a primitive campground about 35 minutes from Grand Canyon National Park; a three-night stay costs $150.

The demand for camping has inspired new openings, including Camp Fimfo on the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, Texas, about an hour from Austin and San Antonio. The parklike campground, with swimming pools, a water park and tavern, opens July 1 with 80 R.V. sites, three A-frame cabins and a number of offers , including 25 percent off stays of five nights. Standard rates start around $117.

Hit the road

It’s a repeat summer for R.V. travel, partially because so many families discovered the value of loading into a cabin-on-wheels compared to buying multiple airfares. Do your itinerary planning before renting an R.V. or van to make sure you can find an adequate place to stop (or practice boondocking , which is camping off the grid, often on Bureau of Land Management property). Once you’ve made those reservations, you’ll find reasonably priced vehicles still available for the holiday.

Outdoorsy , a platform for R.V. owners to rent their vehicles, puts the average cost around $160 a night. Use the code All4Outdoorsy to get 10 percent off on bookings made through July 4 for travel now or later.

Travellers Autobarn rents camper vans in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco with unlimited mileage. A summer discount program offers $50 to $250 off vehicles rented for five days or more (use the promo code “Fifty” for rentals of five days and “OneHundred” for 10 days or more). The vehicles start at $69 for a standard van and $122 for a Kuga Campervan with a microwave, sink, refrigerator and gas stove.

July 4 holiday weekend deals

Independence Day is almost upon us, which means it’s time to light fireworks, wave flags, and spend a whole day (or more!) watching baseball. It also means now is a great time to exercise your independence by booking a (relatively) last-minute getaway for the holiday weekend.

Last week Expedia shared five of the top July 4 package destinations based upon bookings to date. With all of the packages—as with all packages from Expedia in general—travelers save hundreds of dollars by booking their flight and hotel together.

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs California downtown

Expedia’s analysis indicates that savings on travel to this desert city are averaging nearly 25 percent, equating to nearly US$500 saved per booking. One of my personal favorite things about this city is all of the classic 1950s architecture.

Lihue, Hawaii

Lihue Hawaii

We identified 20 percent average savings per package to the biggest city on the island of Kauai. These savings are equal to US$350. If you’ve never been to Kauai, it’s the lushest of all the Hawaiian Islands. Waimea Canyon, pictured above, is known as the “Grand Canyon of the South Pacific.”

Maui, Hawaii

500px Photo ID: 110116789 - Helicopter ride over Maui

This Hawaiian Island has become one of my favorite places on Earth, and our data indicates that travelers save an average of 15 percent (equal to US$300) when bundling hotel and airfare together. My husband and I took our kids to Maui earlier this year we’ve heard July 4 there is spectacular.

Wilmington, North Carolina

wilmington-nc-ig

If you’ve never visited this East Coast city, it’s worth a closer look. Expedia analysis shows that bundling hotel and airfare saves you an average of 15 percent on trips to Wilmington. That’s equal to US$250, which goes a long way as spending cash.

Fort Myers, Florida

500px Photo ID: 98206697 - The end of Blue Hour and beginning of Golden Hour just before sunrise at Fort Myers Beach Pier in Fort Myers Beach, FL.

Finally, Expedia data indicates that booking hotel and airfare simultaneously for package deals to this West Florida city will save you an average of 10 percent, equal to US$200. One of the things I love about summer in Florida: It’s never crowded!

Beyond these domestic destinations, international destinations showing particularly strong package savings possibilities include Hong Kong, Cancun, San Jose del Cabo, and Nassau (in the Bahamas). Within Europe, Expedia analysts found solid package savings in Paris, London, Edinburgh, Roman, and Milan.

My colleague, John Morrey, vice president and general manager for Expedia, put it best when he said: “If you book a flight, hotel and car simultaneously, you’re likely to save money versus booking them independently. Package bookings are both the easiest and most consistent way to make budget-conscious travel choices.”

What are you waiting for?

Last-minute July 4 weekend travel deals

Hoping to get out of town for the July 4th weekend?

You may still be able to book a trip and have cash left over.

About 41 million Americans are projected to travel 50 miles or more this Independence Day holiday weekend, up 2 percent over last year, according to auto club AAA. Because the holiday falls on a Friday this year, many travelers are expected to take advantage of the three-day weekend.

While domestic hotel rates have been edging up, with an average daily rate of $171 for the July 4 weekend, several major online travel agencies are reporting that some major cities remain budget-friendly.

“Las Vegas is a great value this July 4th, with average nightly hotel rates of only $105,” said Travelocity senior editor Courtney Scott. Another great option for deals over the holiday weekend is Orlando, Florida, where hotel rates are averaging $131, a 15 percent drop over this time last year, she said.

Other domestic cities where Travelocity found daily rates under $150 for the holiday weekend include Albuquerque ($112), Colorado Springs ($116), Memphis ($126), Dallas/ Ft. Worth ($126), Atlanta ($139), Palm Springs ($140), Minneapolis ($141) and Phoenix ($142).

Priceline’s data crunching for the upcoming holiday weekend identifies Aspen, Colorado, as the best bargain destination for the holiday weekend, with an average daily hotel rate of $152, which is 27 percent cheaper than last year at this time. Other bargains on Priceline’s Top 10 July 4th Bargains list include Miami, where the average hotel rate is $100, down 8 percent over last year.

Travelocity’s data also shows that airfares to eight out of the top 10 most popular destinations for the holiday weekend are less than the national average of $402.

CheapOair is also reporting a wide range of holiday bargains. “For those traveling domestically, they will find great deals across the country, but especially Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Denver and Atlanta, which have daily hotel rates for under $100 and airfare for under $350 roundtrip,” said Patrick Fragale, the company’s chief content officer.

Travelers who do spend the holiday in some of these "best bet" cities will also find plenty of free entertainment. Miami Beach is planning a full day of family-friendly activities, a free concert and fireworks over the water. Orlando has a long list of day and evening activities taking place in and around the city, including a watermelon-eating contest in Winter Park and a variety of parades. In addition to evening July 4 fireworks displays, visitors to Denver will be able to watch a free outdoor showing of the Disney animated blockbuster "Frozen" in Skyline Park on July 5.

If you’re in the right city and willing to wait until the last minute to make a holiday plan, you may be able to travel there in a private jet for just a few dollars.

On July 3, private jet charter company JetSuite will use its Facebook page to post one-way, empty leg flights for July 4th — its private aircraft rentals are usually available for no less than $536 — for just $4.

Fourth of July Deals: 13 Weekend Getaways

By Frommer's Staff

WeJustGotBack.com

The July 4th weekend has long been an all-American summer getaway. This year, that weekend may be getting longer. Since Independence Day falls on a Wednesday this year, plenty of resorts are extending their parties -- and patriotic deals -- for the full week surrounding the holiday, starting as early as June 29 and some going through July 9. The options for fun are as varied as the colors in those fireworks: head to a city for big parades and a splash of culture, sprawl on a beach blanket under the starry sky, or treat the kids to a story time led by Betsy Ross. Here's a sampling of some top packages for families this Independence Day:

TradeWinds Island Grand Resort

Where: St. Pete Beach, FL Why: Because this beachfront property has plenty of family-friendly activities both on and off the sand. Kids can take a ride (or several) down the waterslide, play mini golf, bounce on the bungee trampoline, or listen to tales of the sea from Red Beard the pirate. For the holiday weekend, there will be dancing, carnival games, a classic American cookout, and Uncle Sam's Most Patriotic Contest, which you can win by wearing the wackiest combos of red, white, and blue. The three-night " Red, White, and Boom " package (available between July 5 and 9) starts at $209 per night for a family of four, including entertainment and buffet tickets.

Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa

Where: Litchfield Park, AZ Why: Because this AAA four-diamond golf and spa resort is hosting the "Great American Picnic" and barbecue on July 3, and gives its hotel guests the best seats for fireworks. The recently renovated resort also has a kid's camp, tennis clinics, a full-service spa, and -- essential in the desert -- four pools and two waterslides. The two-night " Great American Picnic " package starts at $149 per night, with admission to the picnic for two adults (kids cost $8 each), and reserved seating on the fairway for fireworks. Alternatively, you can book the package for one night at $169.

Hyatt Regency Hill Country

Where: San Antonio, TX Why: Because you don't have to be vacationing in one of the 13 original colonies to get into that 1776 spirit. This Texas-sized resort -- with two pools, a lazy river, bike trails and a bird sanctuary -- offers a few enticements for history buffs. Enjoy story time with Betsy Ross, play "George Washington Says" on the lawn, or take horse-drawn wagon rides. Kids can also make cards for soldiers overseas, or have meet-and-greets with the resort's two resident dogs, lab-golden retriever mixes. Regular rates start at $299 per night this time of year, but the " Family Stay More, Play More deal offers resort credits of $100 for two-night stays, and up to $500 for five-night stays.

Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa Where: Thompsonville, MI Why: Because this family-owned ski resort turns into a summer adventure playground, with Michigan's only alpine slide, a water park, and an adventure zone with tubing, kayaking, and biking. The holiday carnival kicks off on July 1 and runs all week with a moonlift chairlift ride, a pool party, a family golf scramble, a 4K fun run, a bike parade, and evening fireworks. The " Old-Fashioned Fourth " package includes 20 tickets to the carnival, complimentary ice cream cones, and free family tickets for the alpine slide, chairlift ride, and rock wall. You'll also enjoy discounts on tubing trips, the kids' club, and golf lessons. Kids can spend hours in the one-acre outdoor water playground with a lily-pad walk, a splash zone, cargo nets, and a waterslide. We found package rates that averaged $237 per night.

Semiahoo Resort

Where: Blaine, WA Why: Because this lakefront golf and spa resort makes a great home base for outdoor adventure tours such as whale watching, kayaking, and fishing. The "Moo" also offers daily scavenger hunts, tennis, and swimming. When night falls, families can catch a flick at the resort's own movie theater or roast marshmallows at a beach bonfire. You can celebrate the Fourth with pony rides, family volleyball tourneys, live music, and a salmon-and-burger barbecue before the fireworks over Semiahoo Bay. The " Fourth of July Salmon BBQ " package starts at $189 per night and includes two tickets to the barbecue cookout (normally $20 each). Kids' tickets are $10 extra.

Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa

Where: Whitefield, NH Why: Because this eco-friendly resort overlooking two mountain ranges offers scenic hiking trails, horseback riding, carriage rides, and golf. Guests can also explore the working farmhouse that's home to goats, chickens, horses, and even a llama. The festivities that last from July 1-7 include old-fashioned favorites such as a pie-eating contest and racing homemade cardboard boats. Kids even get a party of their own, with s'mores by the campfire. Fourth of July festivities include a Family Barbecue with live music and a fireworks finale. Rates that week start at $209 per night.

Hotel Del Coronado

Where: San Diego, CA Why: Because Independence Day in this military community means a classic parade, a fun run, concerts, and fireworks. Guests at the beach resort can kick off the holiday week with a free family beach party on June 30, with live music games and an early fireworks show. To further entice kids, the resort offers family packages such as its Best of San Diego package, which starts at $324 per night and includes two passes to Sea World, the Zoo, and Safari Park.

Hilton Sandestin Beach

Where: Sandestin, FL Why: Because this resort along Florida's northwestern coast offers white sand, three pools, bike rentals, kayaking, and snorkel-friendly waters. The resort also has a kids' program, teen activities, and family-friendly junior suites with bunk beds. Over the holiday week, there will be a giant inflatable waterslide, sunset movies, hula-hooping, and marshmallow roasting, as well as a cookout and fireworks on the Fourth. The three-night Independence Day getaway (available between June 29 and July 8) starts at $419 per night, with breakfast daily for two and the cookout dinner for two (the meals are free for kids 5 and under).

Where: Brainerd, MN Why: Because the holiday at this family favorite on beautiful Gull Lake -- which extends from July 3 though 8 -- means horse-drawn trolley rides, beach games, bonfires with marshmallow roasting, lake cruises, bingo, evening entertainment, and a dazzling fireworks display. The resort also features a huge indoor pool, spa, and top-notch golf course. Camp Cragun's offers kids scavenger hunts, relay games, bike rides, treasure hunts, and more. Five-night Fourth of July packages start at $159 per night and include a dinner buffet, one breakfast buffet, a free round of golf, festivities, and lodging for four.

Vee Bar Guest Ranch

Where: Laramie, WY Why: Because this guest ranch, less than three hours from Denver, offers an Old West-style celebration with hiking, fishing, riding, and more hands-on activities. Three-, six-, or seven-night stays during the summer coincide with the local Jubilee Days, featuring a rodeo, carnival, and petting zoo. At night there are barbecues, dancing, and fireworks under the stars. Year-round the ranch has a great horseback riding program, where you get assigned the same horse for your entire stay so that you can bond, just like any cowboy worth his or her salt (kids must be at least 6 to ride on his or her own). Rates start at $3,200 for three nights for a family of four ($900 per adult, $700 each for kids ages 6-18), which includes a cabin plus all meals, activities, and entertainment.

Barton Creek Resort & Spa

Where: Austin, TX Why: Because this resort with golf, spa, and a family game room knows how to throw a relaxing party. Come hungry: the festivities (which last from June 30-July 9) offer pool games, fireworks, and plenty of food, from classic barbecue to lobster boils. Fireworks and barbecues happen on Saturday nights -- great for anyone who can't do the midweek getaway. For dates that week, we found a Sunny Side Up Family rate starting at $199, which includes breakfast daily for four, as well as milk and cookies.

Callaway Gardens

Where: Pine Mountain, GA Why: Because this nature-lovers' resort also puts on a variety of shows for the holiday: fireworks, live music, and even the FSU Flying High Circus, complete with jugglers, high-wire walkers, and trapeze acts. There will be mini golf, swimming, rock climbing, and a floating playground on Robin Lake, which features log rolls, water trampolines, and an enormous inflatable waterslide. For a break from the beach, families can visit the butterfly center, explore the resort's many nature trails, or watch the resort's Birds of Prey show. The July Fourth Star Spangled Beach Party " package, available July 3-4, starts at $159 per night and includes accommodations, a barbecue lunch, and most activities.

Colonnade Hotel Where: Boston, MA Why: Because you can't go wrong with a July 4 getaway in patriotic Beantown, and this Back Bay hotel with a rooftop pool is banking on mild temperatures. If it gets hot, however, you're in luck: When you book a two-night stay using the July 4 Summer Meltdown Package between June 29 and July 8, your first night's rate will be the regular rate ($309 for a family of four) minus the temperature as recorded at 5 pm that day by the National Weather Service (for example, if the temperature is 99, your first night's rate goes down to $210). The package also includes breakfast daily and a flag to take home. Just enter Code July4 when booking online.
