Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) handled 42 million passengers in 2019, with almost 10% of that traffic coming from international flights.

For such a busy airport, it’s not that big, covering just 1,700 acres (the second-smallest footprint of the 20 busiest U.S. airports).

The terminals are all connected by walkways, some within the secure area and some outside of the secure area.

Level 2 — Ticketing and Gates

BOS Terminal A Ticketing

Delta Air Lines and WestJet operate flights at Terminal A from both the main terminal and a satellite concourse connected to the main terminal by an underground walkway.

Satellite  Concourse

BOS Terminal A Concourse

The satellite terminal is accessible through a long underground tunnel with moving walkways. The satellite terminal has 10 gates numbered A13 to A22.

The concourse has a good selection of shops and restaurants mostly located at the entrance of the concourse, including a Starbucks and duty-free store, and a Delta Sky Club can be found before reaching gate A18.

Level 1 — Baggage Claim and Ground Transportation

BOS Terminal A Baggage

Terminal A arrivals are on the lower level with access to ground transportation outside.

Level 2 — Check-in and Gates

BOS Terminal B Departures

Terminal B operates domestic flights only and has a U-shaped layout with parking inside of the U and departure gates around the outside.

Terminal B has 39 gates numbered B1 to B12, B14 to B31, B31A, B32 to B35, B35A, and B36 to B40. The terminal has 2 security checkpoints depending on whether passengers are departing from the north or south side.

An American Airlines Admirals Club is based on the south side of the terminal and a United Club is on the northeast side. The Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club is located near gates B39 and B40. Both sides have a good selection of shops and restaurants, including 2 Legal Sea Foods, 3 Starbucks, and 3 Dunkin’.

BOS Terminal B Arrivals

Ground transportation is available on the lower level, outside of both the north and south sides of the terminal. Some services are curbside and others require passengers to use the crossing into the central reservation.

BOS Terminal C Departures

Terminal C operates domestic and international flights and is an X shape, with the ticketing area in the center and departure gates along the 4 legs.

Terminal C has 31 gates numbered C8 to C12, C14 to C34, C36, and E1, E1A, E2, and E3. Shops and restaurants are located all over Terminal C departures, so you won’t need to stray far to grab a bite before your flight, and The Lounge is located in the northwest leg.

BOS Terminal C Arrivals

Arrivals are on the lower level of Terminal C, as well as access to ground transportation services.

Levels 2 and 3 — Ticketing and Gates

Terminal E Level 2 at Boston Logan International Airport

Terminal E is the main international terminal at BOS.

Opposite gate E11 are elevators that lead to lounges for British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Virgin Atlantic.

Additionally, the shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all passengers can easily access their desired terminal.

Shuttle Between Terminal B and Terminal E

For passengers needing to travel between Terminal B and Terminal E, a shuttle bus service is also available. This shuttle bus route provides a convenient option for those who need to transfer between these two terminals.

The shuttle bus runs every 10 minutes and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete the journey.

Similar to the shuttle between Terminal A and Terminal E, the shuttle service between Terminal B and Terminal E operates 24/7, providing passengers with flexibility in their travel plans. The buses are equipped with comfortable seating and ample space for passengers and their luggage.

Wheelchair accessibility is also available on these shuttle buses.

While some passengers may prefer to walk between terminals, it is important to note that walking between Terminal A/E and Terminal B/E at Boston Logan Airport is not recommended due to the distance and limited pedestrian access.

The shuttle bus service is the most efficient and reliable way to travel between these terminals, ensuring that passengers can reach their destination quickly and comfortably.

logan airport travel between terminals

It can't hurt to ask.

There is a shorter security line at Terminal E, directly to your right as you enter the terminal. It's mainly for Icelandair and WOW and Porter, but it will get you to all of Terminal E, although with a longer walk.

This flight has layover at Boston -Logan airport for 2.5 hours.

I am a visa holder of Canada, but I am confused, If I need US visa if I am transiting through Boston ? or I don't need any visa while transiting through Boston airport ?

Yes, you always need a US visa through a US airport. If you don't have one, you should change your reservation to connect somewhere else. There are plenty of other countries to connect that will be much easier for you than the US.

First and foremost, big thanks to everyone who responded so quickly to my inquiries, for sharing my concerns, and for your kindness, generosity, thoroughness and resourcefulness! All was huge help to get me better prepared and to come up with backup plans!

My first flight out of O'Hare was twenty minutes late, so I was down to 50 minutes to deplane, go to Terminal E (from B), clear security checks and find my gate (praying it wasn't too far). A desperate situation!

I'm happy to report I made the flight , but not without lots of help which had started here. It would have been impossible.

Lessons learned:

1. An hour or so is not enough for connecting time, even at a domestic airport, no matter how small it might be.

2. Factors to consider when booking flights with connections out of US (checked bags go all the way to final designation): departure delay (a stupid mistake on my part. It was winter in Chicago for goodness sake!), arrival/departure terminals (which I didn't even think of) -- it takes extra time to get from one to the next if they are different; security checks once more at a different terminal (again I did not think of this).

3. Correct me if I'm wrong. It seems international flight rules do not allow flight changes, even though the first flight is an American airline . I tried to get on an earlier flight out of Chicago. The AA staff looked it up and told me the system wouldn't allow her to make the change since it was an international flight . I was stuck!

4. Seek all the help you can get: flight attendant who could perhaps put you in the front after landed so you could deplane first; let your fellow passengers know your situation; visualize what you're going to do as soon as you get off the plane (prior researches necessary so you know the airport's layout and ways of moving between terminals, i.e. know what you are going to do each and every step); security check officers, who, when explained to about your situation -- in my case, boarding already started then -- were willing to do what they could; and don't forget to thank the passengers standing in line who let you go before them.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2018. Happy travels!

So glad it all turned out OK for you and thanks for updating us -

Boston's Logan Airport: The Complete Guide

Boston Logan International Airport

Boston’s Logan Airport has a bad reputation for being confusing for those who live outside of the city, but ever since the Big Dig construction extended I-90 to the airport, it’s been much easier. This guide will give you everything you need to know about getting there, parking options, how to best pick up and drop off passengers, and amenities once you get inside.

How to Get There

There are many ways to get to Logan Airport , and it all comes down to your personal preference. You can drive, take a bus or limo service, or use public transportation.

If you’re driving from the west or south, take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90 East) – referred to as the “Mass Pike” by locals – to exit 26. From northern points, take Route I-93 South to exit 24B and follow signs to Logan Airport.

Another option is taking Boston’s public transportation via the MBTA Blue Line Subway and Silver Line Bus from Downtown Boston. There’s also the MBTA Commuter Boat that leaves from Hull, just south of the city. For complete directions from any direction, click here .

Those living or staying outside of the city may prefer the Logan Express as transportation to the airport. There are full-service bus terminals with parking in Braintree, Framingham, Woburn and Peabody. You’ll only pay $7 a day for parking, and these buses will take you to any terminal at Logan Airport. Travel time is about 30-45 minutes, and you’ll want to allow yourself some extra time to account for any traffic that could be hit during transit.

If you are even further north or south, look for other bus transportation services. For example, Portsmouth, NH has C&J Bus line that many people enjoy taking advantage of. Other bus and limo services can be found here .

Leaving the airport: If you're leaving the airport, and you take the Silver Line from Logan Airport into the city to South Station, your transit is free. Upon arriving at South Station, you can get to many different destinations in and around the city via the Commuter Rail, Amtrak and Bus and the MBTA Red Line. Another option is to take the Blue Line, which will connect you to the Orange Line at State Street Station. This is the best way to access parts of the city including Back Bay, Fenway Park and Boston University.

Layout, Terminals, and Airlines

If you look at the interactive map , or if you’ve driven through Logan Airport many times before, you’ll see that it’s one big loop. As you drive through, make sure you pay attention to the signs, as the loops can get a bit confusing – especially if you’re driving around killing time as you wait for someone to arrive – and before you know it you’ll be heading for the exit instead of the terminal you’re looking for.

Logan Airport has flights going all over the country and world regularly. Find a full list of direct international destinations here . And its many destinations means you’ll also find most major airlines at Logan Airport. Below is a breakdown of the airlines by terminal, but keep in mind that you should always check your flight terminal before you head to the airport, as there may be cases that there are changes.

Terminal A:

  • Delta (Terminal E for International arrivals)

Terminal B:

  • American Airlines
  • Boutique Air

Terminal C:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • JetBlue (Terminal E for International Arrivals)
  • TAP Air Portugal (Terminal E for International Arrivals)

Terminal E – International:

  • Azores Airlines (SATA)
  • British Airways
  • Cabo Verde Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Copa Airlines
  • Hainan Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • Primera Air
  • Qatar Airways
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Sun Country Airlines
  • Tap Air Portugal
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

Parking Options

There are plenty of parking options at and around Logan Airport for different lengths of stay, proximity to the terminals, and price points.

Most convenient is the Central Parking Garage, which is exactly as it sounds, central to Terminals A, B, C, and E and can be accessed through covered walkways as you head to and from flights. When you enter the parking garage, look out for signs to your terminal to ensure that you’re parking in the best spot. Central Parking Garage costs vary depending on the length of your stay, with daily rates at $35.

There are also a few other parking lots available for the same $35 a day rate, including the Terminal B Garage and Terminal E Parking Lots. Of course, these options are best for those traveling through these terminals.

The Economy Parking Lot starts at $26 a day and offers free shuttle bus service to all terminals, which come every 15-20 minutes and operate 24 hours a day. This is the most budget-friendly option at Logan Airport. The two-deck garage has more than 2,700 spaces and can be found at Service Road and Prescott Street. You can also follow the signs for Economy Parking as you drive through the roadway that takes you to the terminals.

There will be times where various garages and lots are filled, but you can check ahead on the parking conditions page for details on overflow lots, including driving directions to help you get there. If you’ll be parking at Logan Airport several times a year, you may want to check out the Parking PASSport Gold program, which is the airport’s premium guaranteed parking.

For all the above parking options, there are complimentary services available to those parking here, including assistance if you lose your car or need a jumpstart or air in your tires.

If you prefer to save some money but sacrifice a little convenience, there are park and fly options located off the airport’s property. One example of this is Park, Shuttle & Fly, which costs $25 a day.

Drop-Offs and Pick-Ups

For those visiting Logan Airport to simply pick someone up, head to the arrivals level of the appropriate terminal. And to drop someone off, drive up to the terminal for a brief unload and goodbye. Keep in mind that curbside parking isn’t allowed, and if you stop for more than a few minutes, law enforcement will make you move along.

The Cell Phone Lot is the best place to wait if you're too early to pick up your passenger. It’s just a few minutes away from the terminals, located at Hotel Drive and Service Road, near the airport Gulf Station.

You can also choose to use any of the Logan parking lots and garages for short-term parking if you’ll be at the airport for less than a day and you want to walk in to say goodbye or find the person you're picking up. Prices vary depending on the lot.

Dining Options

There are plenty of food options both pre- and post-security, no matter what terminal or gate you’re traveling through. These range from spots to grab a quick coffee and breakfast sandwich, like Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, to sit-down meals to get a full meal and drink before your flight, such as Legal Sea Foods or Boston Beer Works.

  • Terminal A: Boston Bruins Bar, Currito, La Baguette Marche, La Baguette Marche Express, Market Kitchen, Friendly's, Dunkin' Donuts, Wendy's, Legal's Test Kitchen, Vino Volo, Harpoon Tap Room, Auntie Anne's, Starbucks, Sbarro, Fresh City

Flight Status Info

As an air traveler, it's important to stay updated on the status of your flight, especially when traveling to or from busy airports like Boston Airport. Fortunately, there are several ways to get flight status information at the airport.

One of the easiest ways to check flight status is by using the in-airport flight displays (FIDS). These displays are located throughout the airport and provide real-time information on flight departures, arrivals, delays, and gate information. Simply find the display for your airline and flight number and check the status.

Another convenient way to stay informed about your flight is by using your airline's mobile phone app. Most airlines offer apps that allow you to track your flight status, receive push notifications about gate changes, delays, and cancellations, and even check in for your flight. Make sure to download your airline's app before your trip and enable notifications to stay up-to-date on any changes to your flight.

In addition to mobile apps, airlines also offer text, email, and push notifications to alert passengers about flight status changes. Make sure to provide your contact information when booking your flight and opt-in to receive notifications from your airline.

Passengers can check the status of their flight departure at BOS by visiting the flight departures page on ifly.com, which provides real-time updates on flight departures, delays, and gate information.

Helpful Tips

When to arrive.

When flying out of the airport, it is recommended that you arrive at least 2 hours before your flight's scheduled departure time. This will give you enough time to check in, go through security, and find your gate. However, during peak travel times such as holidays and weekends, it is best to arrive even earlier to avoid long lines and potential delays.

Getting to the Airport

There are several ways to get to Logan Airport, including by car, public transportation, and taxi/rideshare services. If driving, be sure to check traffic and parking conditions ahead of time, as parking can be limited and expensive. Public transportation options include the MBTA's Silver Line bus and Blue Line subway, which both have stops at the airport. Taxi and rideshare services are also available, but be aware of surge pricing during peak travel times.

Getting Oriented

When arriving at BOS Logan, it can be helpful to use iFly.com's interactive airport maps to get oriented. These maps provide detailed information on terminal layouts, gate locations, and amenities such as restaurants and shops. Additionally, signage throughout the airport is clear and easy to follow, making it simple to navigate to your desired location.

Avoiding Delays

To avoid delays at Boston Logan Airport, be sure to check your flight status before leaving for the airport. You can do this through your airline's website or app, or by checking the airport's website. If you do experience a delay, stay informed by checking for updates and speaking with airport staff. Additionally, be sure to follow all TSA guidelines and arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare to avoid missing your flight.

Security Wait Times

At Boston Airport, TSA Security wait times can vary depending on the time of day and the season. During peak travel times, such as holidays and summer months, wait times can be longer than usual. However, the airport has implemented several measures to help expedite the security process, such as TSA PreCheck and CLEAR lanes. It is recommended that passengers arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departure time to allow for enough time to go through security. You can check TSA Wait Times now, so you can budget how much time you need to get to the airport.

Massachusetts State Police troopers responded to a fight Wednesday between two families at Boston Logan Airport, where dozens of migrants have been seen sleeping amid a state shelter capacity crunch.

Troopers were called to Terminal E at approximately 7 p.m. in response to what a

Lt. Sean Quirk described it as a "minor altercation."

"Troopers identified two families who were involved in a disagreement over the use of a power outlet," Quirk said.

Boston EMS also responded and evaluated a juvenile, state police said. No patients were taken to hospitals.

"The involved families were separated with one leaving the terminal," Quirk said.

Gov. Maura Healey was asked about the altercation on Thursday.

"I've said from the beginning that we don't want families staying at Logan Airport," said Healey. "We continue to call on Congress to act to deal with what's happening at the border, in terms of reform."

Healey also said, "I understand that there was an altercation last night. The officials there dealt with it. So that's good. But again, we're focused on calling on Congress to act."

Families have been seen sleeping in the airport for months as Massachusetts shelters exceeded capacity. The state has a right-to-shelter law that allows families to receive emergency housing but capacity was capped at 7,500 families.

Since the cap was enacted, the state has scrambled to make safety net sites available

Sen. Peter Durant, a Republican, said the situation has reached a boiling point.

"We all understand that Congress has to step in. This is a federal issue but we have to deal with the situation that we have here, that we have now. And it's her responsibility to ensure the safety of our citizens," Durant.

A Complete Guide to Boston Logan Airport

Posted on Published: 05/30/2023

Boston Logan Airport often gets a bad rap due to the traffic guests face in driving to the airport, as well as the parking fees and flight delays. But, I actually love flying through Logan International Airport. It offers lots of different airlines and flight destinations, making it easier to get flight deals.

If you are visiting Boston , Logan is also fairly convenient to get through on the Mass Pike. This improved greatly with the infamous Big Dig. Whether you are flying to Logan on your vacation, or using the airport as your home origin, here’s our complete guide to Boston Logan Airport.

This post contains affiliate links, including on the map. A purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us.

Logan Airport Terminals

If you are flying through Logan, or are beginning or ending your journey there, you’ll need to know about the Logan Airport terminals. There are three domestic terminals and one international terminal. All offer different amenities and restaurants, but they are all fairly modern.

In true Massachusetts fashion, there’s no Terminal D at Boston Logan International Airport. In the past, there was a Terminal D, but its gates were moved over to Terminal E and Terminal C (which are connected). The letters for all terminals remained the same, however.

Terminal A at Logan Airport

When I first started flying out of Logan, Terminal A was closed and was being renovated. It opened in 2005 as primarily a Delta terminal. Although that was 13 years ago, the terminal does still feels modern and new. WestJet also operates out of this terminal.

Terminal A has a bit of an unusual shape. Once you go through security, you’ll reach a concourse with a series of gates. However, some gates are on the other side of the terminal, and you’ll need to go down a large escalator, across on a moving sidewalk, and then back up on another escalator.

It can take up quite a bit of time to do that, and you won’t want to travel between areas. So, if you want to eat at any of the restaurants, you’ll want to make a plan based on where your gate is located. It’s best not to go back and forth.

Amenities at terminal A include a kids’ play area “Kidport”, currency exchange, and shoe shine. There are also some shops, including Tumi, Tech on the GO, and several newsstands.

Restaurants in the terminal are Alta Strada, Harpoon Tap Room, and Berkshire Farms Market. There are also some food court-style counters including Currito, Sbarro, and Friendly’s. Seating is fairly limited for these restaurants, but you can always take things to eat by your gate.

Terminal B is, in my option, the most frustrating of the terminals at Logan. If you are being dropped off at the airport, you’ll want to know exactly what gate your flight is leaving from. There are two separate areas, and you’ll want to make sure you are going to the right door. Airlines leaving from Terminal B include American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest, Alaska Airlines, Boutique Airlines, Air Canada, and Spirit.

There’s also a small Air Canada area with its own security. It’s important to note that there are almost no amenities beyond a bathroom and a small concession booth in this area once you pass through TSA. If you are planning to eat before your flight, you’ll want to do that before you pass security.

One time, when I was flying Air Canada, I arrived nice and early for a full sit-down breakfast and was very disappointed with the limited options.

There are lots of different amenities located in this terminal otherwise. Restaurants at Logan Airport Terminal B include Temazcal, Lucca, Legal Sea Food, OTTO, and Stephanies. There are also some counter-style restaurants, including Peet’s Coffee, Dunkin Donuts, and W Pizza. For grab-and-go food, there’s a Berkshire Farms Market that also has a coffee counter and some hot food. It’s a great option for quick, healthy food.

Other amenities include a shoeshine, American and United clubs, a KidPort kids’ play area, and a currency exchange. Vineyard Vines, TUMI, Fifth and Sunset, and several newsstands are among the shops that you’ll find in the terminal.

I find myself spending most of my time in Terminal C because I typically try to fly JetBlue whenever I can. In addition to JetBlue, Terminal C is also home to TAP Portugal, Aer Lingus, and Cape Air. JetBlue definitely has the largest presence at the terminal, however.

Because of a fairly recent renovation, I find Terminal C to have the best layout and amenities. It does, however, also seem to have the longest security lines. This can vary of course, by day, but be prepared.

There are a number of restaurants in the terminal, both before and after security. You’ll find a Legal Sea Foods, Wahlburgers, Mija, Shojo Santarpios, Davios, and Boston Beer Works after security. There are also some counter service and grab-and-go locations, including Dunkin Donuts, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Starbucks, Camden Food Company, and Starbucks.

The shopping in Terminal C is probably the best at the airport. There are several specialty shops including Natalie’s Candy Jar, New England Collections, and Travel + Leisure, along with several newsstands and gift shops.

Amenities at Logan Airport’s Terminal C include a chapel, hair salon (before security), KidPort kids’ playspace, a shoeshine, a USO lounge, and “The Lounge”. JetBlue doesn’t offer a lounge specifically for their passengers, but those with Priority Pass access can get into The Lounge (sometimes you’ll have to go on a waiting list). Day passes are also offered.

Boston at Terminal E

Terminal E is the International terminal at Logan Airport. Not every international flight departs from this terminal – so check your airline for terminal information. In addition, some domestic flights leave from Terminal E. For instance, Frontier flies out of Terminal E.

Most international flights will arrive at Terminal E unless you go through US customs at the foreign airport you depart from (I’ve done this in Toronto and Nassau Bahamas in the past).

When leaving from Terminal E, it’s important to note that they don’t offer TSA PreCheck at this terminal. Pack your bags knowing that you’ll need to remove your liquids and electronics (keeping in mind that TSA rules are always subject to change), even if you are enrolled in TSA PreCheck.

When flying on Frontier, I was able to go through security without taking off my shoes. This was because I had TSA Precheck. But keep in mind you’ll still have to remove items from your bag and will need to wait in the regular line.

If you are arriving at Terminal E, and need to go through customs, it’s a pretty streamlined process. There are separate kiosks for those with Global Entry , and Mobile Passport is also accepted. I highly recommend Mobile Passport if you don’t have Global Entry – it’s free to use.

Restaurants at Terminal E include Vino Volo, Durgin Park, Legal Sea Foods, Monica’s Mercato, and Vineyard Grille. There’s also a Starbucks, Sbarro, Burger King, and Fuel America.

I’ve found that sometimes the terminal seems empty, while other times it’s very crowded. Because of the nature of international flights, evenings are typically the busiest in Terminal E.

There are also several shops in the terminal. These include a few duty-free shops and two newsstands.

The terminal offers several different airline premium lounges as well as currency exchange. If you are visiting the airport just for your Global Entry appointment, you’ll find that office in Terminal E before security. Terminal E is attached to Terminal C and you can easily walk between the two.

The whole airport offers free WiFi that is fairly reliable. The amount of outlets/plugs available really varies by gate. Some have plenty available, while others don’t have many at all. Signage to the gates, ticketing areas, and baggage claim are pretty clear throughout the airport.

A new app, called AtYourGate, offers retail and food delivery right to your gate. I haven’t used this yet, but it’s a great option if you have family members who are looking for different food.

Logan Airport Parking

Parking at Logan International Airport is not always a great experience. It’s expensive, and sometimes the central parking garage can be full especially midweek. If you are planning on parking, it’s always a good idea to go early.

The Central Parking Garage services all of the terminals and is the most central to Terminals A and C. Parking can also be reserved in advance.

There’s also a separate parking garage for Terminal B, as well as a lot for Terminal E. While the Central Parking Garage can be used for those terminals, you’ll have these additional options.

There’s also economy parking available. This can be used if you want to save money, or if the Central Parking Garage is full. It’s a bit further away, and you’ll need to take a shuttle bus to get to and from the economy garage.

For an even better price, look into AirportParking.com , where you can reserve off-property parking. Keep in mind that these are independent lots and maybe a distance away from the actual airport. Plan accordingly.

Picking someone up from the airport? There’s a cell phone lot that you can wait in until you get the call that your friend/family member is ready to be picked up. There are also dedicated rideshare lots if you are taking Uber/Lyft. These have recently changed, so keep an eye on the signage.

Getting to and from Logan International Airport

If you don’t want to drive, there are a number of different ways that you can get to the airport. My favorite is the Logan Express – a bus that travels between several Boston area communities and Logan Airport. These stations are in Framingham, Peabody, Braintree, Woburn, and Boston’s Back Bay. Check the website for the schedules and parking information at those locations. I find Logan Express to be very convenient.

The MBTA also has airport transportation on the Blue Line and the Silver Line. The airport has a free bus that goes to the Blue Line Airport Station, which then goes to Downtown Boston.

The Silver Line SL1 is free to Boston’s South Station and stops at each terminal. From South Station, you can transfer to the Red Line.

There are also other bus services that go to and from Logan Airport from areas as far as New Hampshire. These include the Plymouth & Brockton bus line, Peter Pan, Concord Coach, as well as other buses. Check with those individually for rates and schedules.

Of course, you can also take private cars, limo services, Uber, Lyft, and taxis to the airport. There are drop off locations at all terminals in the departures area.

Logan Airport Car Rental

If you are planning to rent a car once you land in Boston, you’ll have plenty of options. There’s a relatively new Rental Car Center building, which is located a short distance away. A shuttle bus is available right to the center. You’ll find most major rental car companies at the facility.

the Hyatt airport hotel

Logan Airport Hotels

Want to stay near Boston’s Logan Airport? There are lots of hotel options in the area. The Hilton Boston Logan Airport is the most convenient. It’s connected to all of the airport terminals through a sky bridge, and a shuttle is also available. We stayed there on our honeymoon before an early morning flight, and we loved the hotel. It’s very comfortable.

There’s also the Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor . This hotel isn’t connected via sky bridge but does have a complimentary shuttle. It’s also convenient because it’s located on airline property. I haven’t had the opportunity to stay there yet, but I’d like to.

There are other chain hotels in the area that are very close to the airport. These aren’t on airport property but are pretty convenient. Some of these also offer park-and-fly services where you can stay at the hotel before your trip and park during your trip. Inquire specifically about that service when you book. The best and worst airports to have a layover, according to a travel expert who flies 200,000 miles a year

  • Connecting flights add travel time and a higher risk of delays or cancellations.
  • Flight expert Gilbert Ott says some airports are better for layovers than others.
  • The best have nice lounges, a variety of food, and are easy to navigate.

Insider Today

Nonstop flights are better than connecting ones — obviously. A trip with a layover adds travel time that would be better spent at a destination and opportunities for things to go wrong, from delays to cancellations.

Flight expert Gilbert Ott agrees, but sometimes, a layover is the only option.

"I try to avoid them, but a lot of the best places worth going to these days do not have direct flights from faraway places," Ott, who flies about 200,000 miles a year and shares his insights on his blog, God Save the Points , told Business Insider.

In Ott's experience, some layovers are more bearable than others based on where you connect.

In general, Ott says it's best to have a layover in an airline's hub airport in case of delays and cancellations.

"In any case, you want to be in a place where the airline has a strong presence because you're going to have layers of support," he said. "And if I miss a connecting flight , there's probably another flight because it's a hub."

But when it comes to killing time, navigating terminals, and minimizing chances of delays, some airports offer a better layover experience than others.

These are the best and worst airlines to have a layover in, according to Ott.

A variety of upscale lounges and an on-site hotel make Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport one of the best for layovers.

Ott said Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is one of the best for layovers because there are many premium lounges .

"It's one of those places where if you do have a layover and you really need to kill time, there are both top-notch lounges and an airport hotel directly in the terminal," Ott said.

Ott said one of his favorite lounges in the US is DFW's Capital One lounge . Amex Centurion and Delta Sky Club also have lounges in Dallas, and a Chase Sapphire Lounge is set to open there in the future.

Meanwhile, Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, is small, and there's not much to do there.

logan airport travel between terminals

According to Ott, smaller airports are generally the worst for layovers.

"I think there's a just inherent advantage to being a big airport because big airports can attract retail," he said.

For example, Ott told BI he often has layovers at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky .

"I've been there a lot. It's not a fun place to wait for flights," he said. "You have nothing to do."

In 2019, BI's Katie Warren reported that the Kentucky airport was the smallest she'd ever been to, with just two runways.

However, travelers with a tight layover may appreciate that Blue Grass Airport has the shortest walk to the gate in the US at just 0.11 miles.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is ideal for shopping between flights.

"I like Seattle-Tacoma Airport because they've done a really good job of cultivating more local stores and Seattle-centric things," Ott said. "If you've got an hour and 45 minutes, it's easy to kill time there."

Ott added that he's enjoyed sifting through records at a music store during layovers and sampling Washington state wines at a bar.

Business Insider previously reported that the airport's shops reflect the Pacific Northwest experience, with stores like Show Pony, Made in Washington, and Discover Puget Sound.

"It doesn't feel as sterile and generic as some airports. You actually get a sense of Seattle. It's not just an airport somewhere," Ott said.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has many amenities, but it can be brutal for layovers due to frequent weather-related delays and cancellations.

logan airport travel between terminals

No one wants to put their trip on pause over delays and cancellations — especially in a connecting airport.

According to Ott, this may be more likely to happen when flying out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia due to frequent storms. And the fact that it's the busiest airport in the world probably doesn't help. BI previously reported that the airport has had mass cancellations in summers and winters due to storms.

"I've had hellacious experiences in Atlanta because of the weather," Ott said. "It's a good airport in the sense that there are lots of flights and places to kill time. It's a bad airport in the sense that it's caught up in more storms than most airports."

Ott added that the airport has plenty of amenities but can be overwhelming to navigate.

"There are so many terminals, and you're taking a tram everywhere. They have some nice stuff in them, but it's a hike," he said.

Los Angeles International Airport is among the best for connecting flights because it offers easy access to upgraded terminals.

logan airport travel between terminals

According to Ott, some airports don't allow passengers to travel between terminals they're not departing from.

Since many travelers don't leave the airport between connecting flights, waiting to board can be a drag for those flying out of terminals with few shops, restaurants, and amenities. Ott told BI that international terminals typically have better amenities than domestic ones.

But the terminals are connected at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is why it's one of Ott's favorite airports for layovers.

"If you're domestic itinerary, you can still go to the international terminal, which has better food, shops, and lounges," he said. "You can kill time at LAX for hours."

LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B) was updated in 2023. BI previously reported that the terminal has comfy seating — each with its own power ports — a range of food and bar options, and an exceptional Sky Club.

The upgrade included adding a walkway connecting Terminal 3, which also received an upgrade, to Terminal B. The walk takes five to 20 minutes, so there's no need to catch a bus. This is an especially useful perk for those catching an international connecting flight.

But London Heathrow Airport may be the worst place in the world to have a layover because it's challenging to travel between terminals.

logan airport travel between terminals

" London Heathrow Airport is an atrocious airport for connections — one of the worst in the world, by far," Ott said. Why? Getting from one terminal to another is a journey in itself.

"Some terminals are miles apart, and there is no tram that runs between all of them," he said.

For example, Ott said if you land in Terminal 3 with British Airways, you may connect in Terminal 5.

"You have to go through Terminal 3 and take a bus, which can take up to 30 minutes to arrive. Then, you'll take a long bus ride all around the airport to the other side," he said. "And then you may still end up with another tram or bus ride because Terminal 5 has three terminals within it — A, B, and C. It's an impossible airport for short connections."

According to the airline's website , traveling from one terminal to another can take up to 40 minutes or longer, depending on where you're headed.

Singapore Changi Airport is the best place to spend a layover. It offers local food, on-site hotels, and a ton of activities.

logan airport travel between terminals

"For best, Singapore Changi Airport is just untouchable," Ott said.

Ott added that the airport has multiple hotels, local art shops, and no shortage of things to do, see, and eat.

"Some of the best local food is at the airport because the famous places in Singapore set up locations there," he said.

There's a movie theater, a pool, a butterfly garden, and a wide range of shops.

But the real spectacle is probably the Jewel . The retail and entertainment complex, connected to Terminal 1, is home to activities like a ropes course, hedge maze, and topiary walk. The centerpiece is the Rain Vortex — the world's largest indoor waterfall spanning seven stories.

"You can spend an hour just looking at that," Ott said of the Rain Vortex. "I would have a layover there any day."

Connecting Between London Heathrow Airport's Terminals: A Brief Guide

L ondon Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world and one of the most connected globally. With four main terminals (since the closure of Terminal 1), passengers often need to connect between them. This is not as slick as at some airports. Landside connections, in particular, can take some time.

Connecting at London Heathrow

Most large, or hub, airports have plenty of connecting flights. London Heathrow , however, has the most in the world. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) may beat it as the busiest airport in the world, but not for possible connection options.

OAG regularly looks at this data and has placed Heathrow in the top position for many years. The latest data shows LHR is still the world's number one, followed by New York JFK (JFK) and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS). As of November 2023, Heathrow is the second-busiest international hub in the world , with 3,778,762 available seats for that month.

The best airside connections at Heathrow are, of course, within the same terminal. This will sometimes (but not always) be the case when connecting between flights within the same airline alliance. Taking the one world alliance as an example shows this well. Alliance flights are spread between Terminals 3, 4, and 5.

British Airways is largely in Terminal 5 but also has many flights in Terminal 3. Many other airlines are based in Terminal 3 (including Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Finnair, American Airlines, and Royal Jordanian). But Qatar Airways and Royal Air Maroc are based in Terminal 4.

Airside connections - shuttle buses

Connecting within the same terminal is quick. All terminals have a simple return route to the same terminal, usually involving re-clearing security. The airport recently increased its official minimum connection times (MCT) by 15 minutes. For example, when connecting between flights within Terminal 5, a connection time of 75 minutes is allowed for tickets. If terminals are changed, this is increased to 90 minutes.

When connecting between terminals, passengers use buses provided by Heathrow Airport. These depart from a fixed airside area within each terminal (clearly marked with purple "Flight Connections" signs) and run between all terminals. Heathrow Airport claims buses run at least every six minutes.

Landside connections - using public transport

If you have separate tickets and need to check in again, or need to collect baggage, then you will have to make a landside collection after clearing UK immigration. Landside, you cannot make use of the Heathrow Flight Connections buses and instead must use public transport to travel between terminals. This is free but can be confusing for those not used to London.

You can transfer landside using the London Underground or the Heathrow Express . The London Underground and new Elizabeth Line require an Oyster card or a credit/debit card to touch in and out, but if only traveling between airport stations, you will not be charged. For the Heathrow Express, you need to collect a free transfer ticket from a ticket machine.

It may be tempting to use the Heathrow Express, but the standard Underground is often the best choice. While the Heathrow Express provides a premium, faster service to London, the Underground is simply more frequent and more convenient for shorter transfers.

Moreover, the Elizabeth Line has been a saving grace for those perhaps transferring to another London area airport. Even though it's not as swift as the pricey Heathrow Express to Central London, it's far quicker than the Underground.

Bus connections between terminals are also possible but are usually slower, and you have to pay for these (again, using an Oyster card or a credit/debit card). The free travel zone for buses around Heathrow ended in 2021. Late at night or very early in the morning, bus connections may be the only option, however.

The best train connections between specific terminals are:

Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 : Walk through the connecting underground tunnel (around five or ten minutes)

Terminal 2/3 and Terminal 4: Take either the London Underground Piccadilly Line or the Elizabeth Line. Trains run around every five minutes, with a total connection time of 15 to 20 minutes. Note that the Underground only runs in one direction from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2/3. To move the other way, use the Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line.

Terminal 2/3 and Terminal 5: Likewise, take either the London Underground Piccadilly Line or the Elizabeth line.

Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 . Transfers are slightly more complicated as there is no direct connection. You can take the Elizabeth Line, the Heathrow Express, or the London Underground. With all options, you need to transfer trains at Heathrow Terminal 2/3. These connections take longer, allow around 30 minutes.

Plenty of action

Despite losing out to European competitors during the dark days of the pandemic downturn, Heathrow is climbing back as one of the most active airports on the continent. Despite Istanbul Airport claiming the top general top spot in 2022, Heathrow tops the list regarding the busiest long-haul routes , receiving constant flights from the likes of New York, Dubai, and Singapore,

It also remains the hotspot for avgeeks to try out a wide range of commercial jetliners. Notably, it is still the most diverse Airbus A380 airport globally and the second-busiest overall , behind DXB, when it comes to the superjumbo's flights.

As many Simple Flying readers will know, Heathrow has long attempted to develop a third runway and expand its limited two-runway capacity. News emerged in late 2023 that the plans will be revived under new CEO Thomas Woldbye, despite the pressures of political and environmental groups. While still a way off from being realized, Heathrow would need to make significant changes to its transport infrastructure to support the increase in flights.

Recent innovations

In the summer, British Airways announced it was trialing a new interactive technology designed to help passengers navigate between Terminals 3 and 5. The app points passengers in the right direction and also reveals amenities along the way, along with information such as closing times.

If you have a long wait at your connecting terminal, you may be wondering if there are places you can sleep at London Heathrow . While there are several hotels near the airport, Terminal 3 and Terminal 5 are a good bet for designated sleeping zones, although Terminal 2 can be accommodating too. However, be advised that Terminal 4's airside section closes overnight.

Overall, connections at Heathrow are not that difficult, but using standard public transport rather than airport-provided transport is confusing at first.

What are your thoughts about connecting at Heathrow? How has your experience been over the years? Feel free to discuss more about Heathrow's connections in the comments section.
