Reed looks on after hitting his tee shot

Following the news of Bryson Dechambeau and Pat Perez signing for the PGA Tour, the LIV Golf Series has confirmed that Patrick Reed will be joining their fellow countrymen, with the 31-year-old set to appear at the second event at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland on the 1st - 3rd July.

In a statement from LIV Golf's CEO and Commissioner, Greg Norman said: “The growing roster of LIV Golf players gets even stronger today with a player of Patrick Reed’s caliber. He has a proven track record as one of the most consistent competitors in pro golf and adds yet another big presence at our tournaments.

"He’s a Major champion who has had a significant impact playing international team competitions, and he’ll bring another impressive dynamic to our team-based format at LIV Golf.”

It is yet another notable scalp for the LIV Golf Series , with Reed joining a number of Major winners like Phil Mickelson , Dustin Johnson , Sergio Garcia and DeChambeau , as well as Ryder Cup legends, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter .

Speaking on the broadcast via video message, Reed explained: "I'm super excited. Just the thought of being a part of an evolution and a change in golf for the better for me is unbelievable. I've been watching all weekend and the format and the way that everything is super exciting and I can't wait to be part of it.

"It's refreshing to see Team Golf again. It brings me back to the good old days in college and also back to the Ryder Cups and President Cups, when you're not just playing out there for yourself, but also playing for your team.

Reed's last victory on the PGA Tour came at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open

Because of the move by Reed, it now means he will face a suspension from the PGA Tour , with Jay Monahan releasing a strongly worded letter claiming that LIV Golf players are "suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate" in PGA Tour events. They will be removed from the FedEx Cup rankings following this week's RBC Canadian Open and will not be eligible for the FedEx Cup or Presidents Cup.

The letter went on to say: "These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons. But they can't demand the same PGA Tour membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platforms as you. That expectation disrespects you, our fans and our partners."

Matt joined Golf Monthly in February 2021 covering weekend news, before also transitioning to equipment and testing. After freelancing for Golf Monthly and The PGA for 18 months, he was offered a full-time position at the company in October 2022 and continues to cover weekend news and social media, as well as help look after Golf Monthly’s many buyers’ guides and equipment reviews.

Taking up the game when he was just seven years of age, Matt made it into his county squad just a year later and continues to play the game at a high standard, with a handicap of around 2-4. To date, his best round came in 2016, where he shot a six-under-par 66 having been seven-under through nine holes. He currently plays at Witney Lakes in Oxfordshire and his favourite player is Rory McIlroy, despite nearly being struck by his second shot at the 17th during the 2015 BMW PGA Championship.

Patrick Reed announced as latest player to join LIV Golf Invitational Series

  • ESPN News Services

ST. ALBANS, England -- Patrick Reed is the latest former Masters champion to sign up for the Saudi-funded LIV Golf series in defiance of the PGA Tour and activists who object to the players promoting the kingdom's sporting project.

With Pat Perez also confirmed as joining the breakaway on Saturday, 20 players have now defected from the PGA Tour. The latest announcements came during the final round of the inaugural LIV event at Centurion Golf Club outside London, where Charl Schwartzel of South Africa became the circuit's first winner and took home $4.75 million.

The lucrative rewards for joining the series funded by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund have not been enough to entice any players ranked in the world's top 10.

Reed, who has won almost $37 million in a decade on the PGA Tour, is ranked 36th. The American player's only major win was the 2018 Masters.

"It's refreshing to see team golf again. It takes me back to college and Ryder Cup days," Reed said. "You're not just playing for yourself -- you're playing for your team over there and that camaraderie. I'm excited about seeing more golf. You're not just seeing coverage from featured groups -- you're seeing it from everywhere."

Having appeared at three Ryder Cups, in which he has been one of the brashest characters on the American team, Reed's decision could see him ineligible for selection in the future.

Reed, 31, said he would make his debut on the second stop of the LIV Golf Invitational Series in Portland, Oregon, on June 30-July 2.

"Talking to some of the guys after the first and second round, the energy seems so lively," Reed said. "Everyone seems so pumped and ready to go. Portland can't get here fast enough."

The 46-year-old Perez, who is ranked 168th in the world, said he wants to travel less after 21 years on the PGA Tour. He made no mention on the LIV live broadcast about the riches on offer.

LIV Golf is supported by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which is controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Salman has been accused of numerous human rights violations, including the slaying of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Saudi Arabia's track record of human rights violations has sparked criticism from groups, including Amnesty International, that the country is "sportswashing" its image by investing in signing up sports stars.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman, who would not speak to the media at the event, called the series a "force for good" in a speech at the victory ceremony, without addressing criticism of the Saudi project.

LIV Golf plays up the financial largesse. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of PIF, said on stage that there would be a prize of $54 million for any player who could hit an implausible 54 at an LIV event.

Terry Strada, the national chairperson of the 9/11 Families & Survivors United for Justice Against Terrorism, has sent a letter to representatives of LIV Golf stars, calling on them to reconsider their participation in the series. Her husband, Tom, died when a hijacked plane flew into the World Trade Center.

"Given Saudi Arabia's role in the death of our loved ones and those injured on 9/11 -- your fellow Americans -- we are angered that you are so willing to help the Saudis cover up this history in their request for 'respectability,'" Strada wrote, accusing the players of betraying U.S. interests.

Strada's letter was sent to agents for Reed as well as Phil Mickelson , Dustin Johnson , Bryson DeChambeau and Kevin Na .

For many in the United States, Saudi Arabia will forever be associated with the collapse of the World Trade Towers and the deaths of nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001. All but four of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi citizens, and the Saudi kingdom was the birthplace of Osama bin Laden, the head of al-Qaida and mastermind of the attack.

Victims' families are trying to hold Saudi Arabia accountable in New York, despite its government's insistence that any allegation of complicity in the terrorist attacks is "categorically false."

Information from ESPN's Kevin Van Valkenburg and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Patrick Reed fumes about missing first major in 11 years

Patrick Reed has taken a renewed dig at the OWGR on the eve of LIV Golf Houston as he prepares to miss his first major for the first time in years.

patrick reed liv tour

Patrick Reed slammed the Official World Golf Ranking once again as the American player opened up on his incredible major streak coming to an end.

Reed has played in every major since the 2013 Open Championship.

Since that appearance at Muirfield, Reed has teed it up in 41 consecutive majors.

But he won't feature in the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst over 13-16 June.

Reed was scheduled to play in a qualifier on 20 May for the third men's major of the year.

But that qualifier fell the day after the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla concluded.

Along with the significant travel hurdle, Reed was also handed an early round tee time.

So the American decided to withdraw.

"Playing at a major championship, grinding for four days, then trying to get a flight out and get there … it wasn't feasible," Reed said before LIV Golf Houston .

"[There was] too much that I had to do to try to get there and line everything up.

"It wasn't meant to be."

Donald Trump with Patrick Reed

Reed is allowed to tee it up every year at Augusta National thanks to winning the 2018 Masters .

But his five-year exemption into the U.S. Open, Open and PGA Championship as a result of that triumph ran out last year.

In years past, he would've relied on his world ranking to qualify for the majors.

Reed is now No. 100 in the OWGR.

LIV applied for OWGR recognition in July 2022 and were rejected last October by the governing body.

Instead of making changes, LIV fumed at the decision and withdrew their application altogether.

Still, Reed is not happy and called the OWGR a 'broken system'.

Patrick Reed

"I feel like the world ranking is not a reflection of where I should be and what events I should be in," he said.

"But at the end of the day, I don't make those decisions. It's their call on special exemptions.

"They're the ones that make those decisions and I just have to live with it, just continue doing what I do and play golf."

Reed has played in 11 non- LIV events since January 2023.

From those starts, he's posted four top-10s and seven top-25 finishes.

Reed said of his results: "If those events would carry over into a normal season throughout, there's be no doubt I'd be in the majors.

"I'll be well inside the top 20, probably top 15 in the world with those kinds of finishes consistently throughout the year."

Report: Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed agree multi-year deals with LIV Golf

patrick reed liv tour

American duo Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed have both joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series,  according to the Telegraph.

  • Related:  Everything Phil Mickelson said as he is GRILLED by media at first LIV press conference

Per the Telegraph’s report , DeChambeau and Reed have both agreed multi-year deals with the controversial LIV Golf Series with the signings to be announced imminently.

Earlier this week, Phil Mickelson confirmed that he had joined the breakaway tour, while it’s reported that Rickie Fowler’s signing is close.

Back in late February, Bryson said:

“While there has been a lot of speculation surrounding my support for another tour, I want to make it very clear that as long as the best players in the world are playing the PGA Tour, so will I. As of now, I am focused on getting myself healthy and competing again soon.”

While just last week, DeChambeau told media that he would be staying with the PGA Tour, saying

“I think that’s mostly – a lot of it is private. There’s not really any conversations that need to be made about that, other than the fact that, like, every person out here has their own opinion on it (LIV). Me, there’s obviously a lot of conversation. For me, I personally don’t think that at this point in time I’m in a place in my career where I can risk things like that.”

Yet just a week later, Bryson has reportedly made a stunning u-turn in news that is sure to reverberate through the world of golf.

Following Lexi Thompson’s Solheim Cup post-round presser on Friday evening, the 28-year-old has been the topic of much discussion.

Golf pundits and fans alike have been weighing in with their takes after this exchange with a reporter surrounding an untimely shank on Friday afternoon went viral:

Confounding answer from Lexi and subsequent reaction from the US side. It was one of the pivotal moments of the entire day and somehow that's off limits? pic.twitter.com/9std3LFlmN — Tron Carter (@TronCarterNLU) September 23, 2023

After the incident, LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez said that Lexi has “been picked on and drug through negative comments. She is tired of it”

So has the criticism of Lexi Thompson been justified, or is this yet another example of her being unfairly treated?

Well, here are five times, in my opinion, that Lexi has been scrutinized far differently over the years than her peers.

2022 KPMG PGA Championship

At the 2022 KPMG PGA Championship, Lexi Thompson held a two-stroke lead with three holes to play. She couldn’t close the deal and lost the tournament.

Afterwards, she was fined $2k (as were the rest of the group) for slow play.

Lexi declined to speak to the media and got hammered on social media for doing so…

Lexi Thompson has declined to speak with the media here at Congressional. Not a great look? — Zephyr Melton (@zephyrmelton) June 26, 2022

Almost every golfer at some point has skipped a media session following disappointment on the course, and nobody has really batted an eyelid.

Tiger skipped back-to-back post-round media briefings at the 2019 WGC Mexico after being frustrated with his putting. Remember the backlash over that? Nah, me neither.

Donald Trump

patrick reed liv tour

@TheWhiteHouse

Every (or nearly every) big-name golfer under the sun has played golf with Donald Trump. Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy etc. Nobody really cared.

For whatever reason, when Lexi Thompson did, it was a story , and she took herself off social media soon after the photo was posted.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Lexi Thompson (@lexi)

2021 U.S. Women’s Open

In the final round of the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, Lexi Thompson had a 6-foot eagle on her opening hole. She missed and made birdie to lead by five.

She then lost the tournament.

Following the round, Brandel Chamblee said on ‘Live From’ :

“She’s got 6 feet away. Now professional golfers don’t miss the center of the face by a pinhead. Look where she hits this putt on the very 1st hole. Look where this putt comes off the face. She would have missed the center of the putter there by a half an inch. I have never — I have never — seen a professional golfer miss the center of the putter by a wider margin than that. That was at the 1st hole. “

Honest? Absolutely. Correct? Brandel usually is. Has any other LPGA golfer been handed the full-on Chamblee treatment? Not to my knowledge.

2023 Solheim Cup

Lexi Thompson spoke the words, “I don’t need to comment on that” when a reporter asked her about a failed shot, and the golf community collectively lost their minds.

Lost on many people is the fact that she literally answered the question instantly after.

Jessica Korda described the reporting of the awkward exchange with the media member as yet another example of the golf media shredding Lexi, but in reality, it was really just golf media covering the furore created by golf fans reacting to the viral clip.

So sad seeing golf media , yet again, shred Lexi. It’s easy writing about other people’s mistakes. It’s Golf, bad shots happen- give the girl a break. She grows the game more than anyone on tour… And she’s a great player!! — Jessica Korda (@Thejessicakorda) September 23, 2023

Lexi then won her next two matches, collecting 3 points from 4 for the U.S. team. But nobody seems to care about that.

‘yOu ShoUlD PrAcTIce puTTinG’

There’s very few golfers that have been plagued with such inane posts on their Instagram page as Lexi Thompson has.

I’ve tracked golfer’s social media accounts over the past few years (job requirement, sort of?). I can categorically say that Lexi gets some of the angriest and most aggressive responses to her posts of any golfer. Male or female. (She also gets some very nice ones too) .

Despite countless posts of Thompson relentlessly practising her putting, the number of comments from dummies accusing her of neglecting that area of her game is both bizarre and alarming. Notice how the comments have been disabled on the post below? Probably not a coincidence.

Go on any other golfer’s social account, and it will be hard to find the same dynamic.

Throw in the scandalous rules decision at the 2017 ANA Inspiration that cost her a second major title and spawned the “Lexi rule,” and it’s hard not to think Lexi has had a bit of a raw deal at times.

Rory McIlroy reveals his one regret over his involvement in PGA Tour-LIV standoff

patrick reed liv tour

Since LIV’s inception, Rory McIlroy has been heavily entangled in the discussion around the PIF’s involvement in men’s professional golf.

Rory famously called LIV “dead in the water” in the early days of the rival league’s presence and was outspoken in his criticism against the league and its players.

That all seemed to change when his friend and Ryder Cup teammate, Jon Rahm, joined LIV.

On the Stick to Football Podcast , calling Rahm “smart” for his decision.

“Jon Rahm hasn’t got any of the heat that the first guys got for going. It’s made it easier for guys to jump. I think Jon, he’s smart, and I think he sees things coming together at some point, so he’s thinking ‘O.K. I’ll take a lot of upfront money,’ which is his prerogative, he can absolutely do that and if things come together, ‘I’ll maybe play LIV for a year then come back to play on the Tour and play some team golf on the sort of fringes.”

He also said at a later date that he was “probably being too judgmental” in the initial stages of LIV’s arrival.

This week, while speaking at the RBC Canadian Open, McIlroy continued down a similar path, saying he wish he “hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved” in the LIV discussion.

“I think, in hindsight, I wish I hadn’t have gotten involved, or not ‘hadn’t have gotten involved,’ but hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved in it, and I’ve articulated that.”

“My whole thing is I’m just disappointed to what it’s done to — not to the game of golf, the game of golf will be fine — but men’s professional golf and this sort of divide we have at the minute. Hopefully we’re on a path to sorting that out and getting that to come back together, but, yeah, I mean, hindsight’s always 20/20, but in hindsight I wish I hadn’t have gotten as deeply involved as I have.”

McIlroy will tee it up at Hamilton this week. The last time the course hosted the Canadian Open, the Northern Irishman won by five shots.

‘Whenever I lose my spot on LIV, I think that will be me done’ – LIV pro outlines retirement plan

patrick reed liv tour

LIV golfer, Richard Bland, is the rare golfer who’s gotten better as he’s aged. He notched his first European Tour win at the 2021 Betfred British Masters at the age of 48. Bland turned pro in 1996, and it took 478 starts for him to emerge victorious.

This week, Jamie Kennedy of Golf Digest posted a chart of just how far the Englishman has come in the late stages of his career.

One of the great charts in modern golf. Richard Bland’s career earnings by age. Made $7m in first 26 years as a pro. Has now made over $12m in the last three years ? pic.twitter.com/Ikmnrk7XxJ — Jamie Kennedy (@jamierkennedy) May 28, 2024

“Made $7m in first 26 years as a pro. Has now made over $12m in the last three years ?”.

Last week, Bland won the Senior PGA Championship, which is a major on the Champions Tour, in his first ever start on the circuit.

The win was an emotional one for the 51-year-old, as he dedicated the performance to his brother, Heath, who has cancer.

After the win, Bland spoke with The Times , saying he envisions himself retiring in the next few years.

“Whenever I lose my spot on LIV, I think that will be me done, regardless of how I’m playing. I’ve got maybe another 18 months left and then I’ll cross that bridge.”

“I love what I do, I’ll never stop playing golf, but I’ve travelled the world without seeing an awful lot of it. I’d like to do that while I’m still fit and able, I’d like to go on golf trips with friends and just have fun without competing.”

Despite winning the Senior PGA Championship which usually comes with an exemption onto the Champions Tour, Bland will not be eligible for the Tour due to his affiliation with LIV.

Bland will tee it up next at LIV Houston next week and currently sits 25th in the individual standings.

Patrick Reed: 'Portland can't get here fast enough'

Patrick Reed joined the LIV Golf broadcast on Saturday and confirmed he'll make his debut in the circuit's second event, which will take place at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., from June 30 to July 2.

The 2018 Masters winner and Bryson DeChambeau have been announced as LIV Golf members since the start of the first event.

Because as well as being an attempt to make golf more attractive to the TikTok generation — like cricket’s T20 format — it is also the latest chapter in the Big Book of Sportswashing and the opening shots in a battle for control of an entire sport.

Let us tackle those heavyweight issues in that order, as that is how events have played out this week.

Canadian Open, sponsor RBC move on without longtime tournament face Dustin Johnson

TORONTO – Laurence Appelbaum heard the news late on May 31, three days before the reveal of the full RBC Canadian Open field.

Dustin Johnson, a two-time major champion and RBC ambassador, was joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour. His name appeared on the list of golfers playing the tour’s first event, happening the same week as the Canadian Open, June 10-12.

When he heard the decision from the PGA Tour, Appelbaum, Golf Canada’s CEO, was surprised and shocked.

“DJ had been so effusive in his commitment to the PGA Tour about 60 days prior,” Appelbaum said. “And he was such an important part of Team RBC.”

Sponsor rocket mortgage cuts ties with bryson dechambeau, 'it's hard to turn down'.

Justin Thomas talked about his concern that others will follow to LIV thanks to the money involved.

Rory McIlroy weighs in

The former world No. 1 said Wednesday that the controversial LIV series is "not something (he wants) to participate in" and implied that those doing so are in it "purely for money." On Thursday, he said golfers at the Canadian Open are "pleased" by the sanctions handed out.

He added that he does plan to check out the LIV Golf streams.

"I think like everyone else, I'm intrigued and I'm a fan of golf. I've got quite a few guys over there that I call friends that are playing," he said. "I'll see it and watch it and see what all the fuss is about."

McIlroy is out on the team names, though.

"Certainly not going out to buy any team merchandise any time soon," he said.

Justin Thomas talks PGA Tour sanctions

World No. 6 Justin Thomas, currently playing at the 2022 Canadian Open, on the PGA Tour’s decision to suspend LIV golfers:

“I’m pleased. Anybody that’s shocked clearly isn’t listening to the message that Jay is putting out.”

LIV players' status for each major

US Open: The USGA confirmed this week that LIV players are eligible for the U.S. Open. The statement was sure not to endorse the rogue tour, but said, by their entry standards, those eligible will be permitted to play, for now.

The Open Championship: It’s a safe bet the R&A will follow the USGA’s lead and allow eligible players to participate, while denouncing the LIV operation, but nothing is official as of now.

PGA Championship: PGA of America bylaws say entries must be part of a recognized Tour. As of now, it’s understood that LIV probably doesn’t fit the bill, thus, those players on the outs with the PGA Tour are not members of a recognized tour, and thus ineligible for the PGA Championship.

Masters: This is the big, big question, and rumblings are out there that word from Augusta National Golf Club could be coming sooner rather than later regarding the status of LIV players for the Masters. This is seen as one of the last lines of defense for the PGA Tour’s counter-strike.

Reporters on site are saying Mickelson switched to a conventional black vest after initially wearing the one with a blacked-out Augusta National logo.

Money talks

A total of $255 million will be awarded in prize money across the eight LIV tournaments. Each of the regular-season events will have a $25 million purse — $20 million for individual prizes and $5 million for the top three teams.

Nobody will go home empty-handed: the winner in each tournament gets $4 million and the last-place finisher will $120,000.

For comparison: the U.S. Open, the biggest purse of the four majors, awards $12.5 million in prize money, with the winner getting $2.25 million.

LIV Golf calls PGA Tour response 'vindictive'

The PGA Tour wasted little time bringing down the hammer golfers who choose to play LIV Golf, issuing a letter outlining suspensions that will affect some of the game's biggest stars, including Mickelson and Johnson. Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed are also reportedly slated to join LIV Golf.

LIV Golf called the sanctions "vindictive," adding that the response "deepens the divide between the Tour and its members."

Reportedly adding Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Saudi-funded LIV Golf strengthens its challenge to the PGA Tour

  • Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed are both reportedly heading to LIV Golf.
  • The Saudi-backed upstart golf league will hold its first event this week in London.
  • As more PGA Tour pros make the jump, LIV Golf shows more strength than some previously expected.

Insider Today

Just a week ago, the imminent debut of LIV Golf felt like something of a joke.

"I certainly don't think the field is anything to jump up and down about," PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy said .

"Look at the field this week," McIlroy said, of the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament. "Look at the field next week in Canada. They are proper golf tournaments."

Indeed, the field for the debut LIV Golf event leaves something to be desired. Aside from headlining superstars Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson , there is a notable absence of top-level talent in their prime preparing to tee it up in London this week.

Aside from Johnson, just three players currently ranked in the Top 40 in the world — Louis Oosthuizen, Kevin Na, and Talor Gooch — will be among those competing.

But in the week since McIlroy's comments, LIV Golf has undoubtedly strengthened its hand.

Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed are the latest big names to make the jump to LIV Golf

While the field of 48 players at the Centurion Club this weekend still won't be filled with heavy hitters, more big names appear to be on the way. PGA Tour fan favorite Rickie Fowler, who once ranked as high as fourth but now sits at No. 145, has been rumored to be signing onto the upstart series, which is being bankrolled by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund. And on Wednesday, multiple reports indicated that two of the biggest eye-catchers on the PGA Tour — Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed — would be heading to LIV Golf in time to play in the second event of its schedule.

"Bryson has always been an innovator," DeChambeau's agent Brett Falkoff told ESPN . "Having the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of something unique has always been intriguing to him. Professional golf as we know it is changing, and it's happening quickly."

Innovation may be one of DeChambeau's reasons for interest in the new league, but another, for him and every other player in the field, is cash.

The purse at this week's London event is $25 million, with the winner of the event taking home $4 million. By comparison, Scottie Scheffler, the winner of the green jacket at the Masters this year , took home $2.7 million for his effort, as did PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas.

Further, given the no-cut aspect of LIV Golf, every player that shows up is guaranteed to leave with a payday, with last place still getting $120,000 in earnings for 54 holes of golf. Given that half of the field at every PGA Tour event goes home empty-handed after missing the cut, it's easy to see the draw of LIV Golf's pitch.

Neither DeChambeau nor Reed rank near the top of most popular players on the PGA Tour, but between Bryson's bombing drives and Reed's reputation as a provocateur , both garner plenty of attention wherever and whenever they hit the course.

DeChambeau's departure comes just a few months after he, much like Johnson, pledged loyalty to the PGA Tour in the wake of Phil Mickelson's controversial comments that nearly derailed the launch of the new league.

"While there has been a lot of speculation surrounding my support for another tour, I want to make it very clear that as long as the best players in the world are playing the PGA Tour, so will I," DeChambeau said at the time . "As of now, I am focused on getting myself healthy and competing again soon. I appreciate all the support."

As LIV Golf fills out its roster with more PGA Tour talent, it becomes easier for more players to convince themselves that making the jump is worth it

While the best players in the world still are playing on the PGA Tour — four of the Top 10 players in the world will be playing in this week's RBC Canadian Open, while none of the Top 10 have yet committed to LIV Golf — as more prominent players make the jump, it'd be easier for others to justify making the same move. There is strength in numbers.

Related stories

Still, there are drawbacks to joining LIV Golf. The series is backed by the Saudi government's Public Investment Fund, the sixth largest sovereign wealth fund with an estimated $620 billion in total assets.

The venture is largely viewed as an exercise in sportswashing — an attempt by the Saudi government to launder their reputation by aligning with high-profile sporting events enjoyed by fans worldwide.

Several players including Mickelson and Johnson have already lost sponsorship deals in part due to their affiliation with the new league.

Players have also struggled to answer questions about the Saudi government's involvement in LIV Golf. Ahead of this week's debut event, several players were stuck searching for words to justify their presence on the breakaway tour.

"I don't condone human rights violations at all," Mickelson said on Wednesday . "I am aware of what happened with Jamal Khashoggi, and it's terrible."

Asked if he would play in a tournament hosted by, say, Russian president Vladimir Putin, Ian Poulter said, "Speculation, I'm not even going to comment on speculation."

—Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) June 8, 2022

But with guaranteed paydays, no cuts, and better money for a shorter schedule, so far the promise of LIV Golf has clearly been enough to entice a good amount of players to take the leap. And as more players continue to join, the muddled responses to questions about the financials behind the league begin to blur into one.

When Mickelson was alone in his comments , saying he would work with the league despite it being run by "scary motherfuckers," it was shocking. But as more players line up to do the same, the impact lessens.

The PGA Tour does not appear to have support from the majors, one of its best defenses against players considering a move

It's still unclear whether LIV Golf will reach a breaking point against the PGA Tour. As things stand, the Tour still has the top talent in the world, with Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Thomas, and Scheffler all pretty publicly committing to staying with the Tour.

But should the balance of talent shift from one side to the other continue, the Tour could face a problem, and as things stand, the majors look unlikely to help.

The four majors in golf — the Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship, and PGA Championship — are not controlled by the PGA Tour. As the biggest tournaments in golf, they hold plenty of power in the current moment. As things stand, the PGA Tour has threatened to strip Tour status of players that leave to play with LIV Golf. But if such sanctions don't apply to the four majors, it frankly weakens the Tour's leverage.

This week, the USGA indicated that players who have qualified for next week's U.S. Open would be able to play, regardless of their potential relationship with LIV Golf. Should the rest of the majors follow that lead, players could see the LIV Golf model — roughly 12 events for the league plus four major weekends — as an ideal schedule.

Several of the LIV players have already given up their Tour cards voluntarily , attempting to potentially leave themselves the option to earn it back free of repercussion at a later date .

If things continue trending in this direction, the PGA Tour might want to start getting creative with how they plan to combat LIV Golf, and fast.

There's still a lot we don't know, but a lot of answers should be coming this week

For months, LIV Golf has existed more as a specter than an actual threat to the PGA Tour.

But with a growing roster of players and an actual event teeing off, fans will finally get to see what exactly the new league looks like from a sporting perspective.

LIV Golf still doesn't have an American television broadcast partner, and will be available to be streamed online through YouTube, Facebook, and its own website.

As McIlroy stated, the field for this week's London event is not all that impressive, but it feels likely that each of the subsequent seven events could see better and better fields.

Further, there is enough money behind the project that it can continue as long as the Saudi Public Investment Fund decides it's a worthwhile cause.

For now, there's a tournament with the richest prize in golf history set to be played with nearly none of the top golfers in the world in attendance. Where things go from there is anyone's guess.

2024 LIV Golf Houston schedule, field of players, teams, prize money, purse, live stream, TV schedule

Liv golf returns for one final event before the third major championship of the season.

GOLF: JUL 29 LIV Golf Invitational Series Bedminster

After an eventful international swing that included stops in Australia and Singapore, LIV Golf returns to the United States for its event in Houston, Texas. Taking to the Golf Club of Houston for the first time in the league's history, LIV Golf will trot out the usual suspects in its lone event before next week's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Leading the way of contenders is the man who nearly reigned supreme at the PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau. The Crushers captain has been stellar on LIV Golf and in major championships but still searches for his first individual title of the year. His team has captured a couple of victories, as have the all-Australian squad, Ripper GC.

Cameron Smith aims to lead his team to its third straight victory and looks to find some form of his own in the process. While the former Open champion has flashed form this season, Smith has struggled to string a run of quality outings together. With next week's venue setting up perfectly for his game, Smith will hope for an uptick in the lead up to the U.S. Open.

Jon Rahm has been stellar on LIV Golf with nothing but top-10 finishes, but this has yet to translate into major championships. Not a factor at the Masters or PGA Championship, the two-time major champion hopes to find that missing link this week in Houston.

Brooks Koepka appears close to something special as the latest LIV Golf winner in Singapore, while Joaquin Niemann looks to keep his great season rolling in the right direction. Dean Burmester, Abraham Ancer, Talor Gooch and Louis Oosthuizen are among those who round out the list of contenders in Houston.

Patrick Reed makes a case for why playing for LIV isn't much different than his past dedication to compete in England and Europe

1243134059

Patrick Reed reacts on the 18th green after shooting 64 in the third and final round of the shortened BMW PGA Championship.

VIRGINIA WATER, England — Amidst all that has gone on and continues to go on in his eternally controversial existence, no one has ever doubted Patrick Reed’s ability to play golf. Just about everywhere and anywhere that is. Long before the former Masters champion committed a large chunk of his future to the endlessly lucrative but less-challenging entity that is LIV Golf, he was a member of the European Tour (he is now an honorary member of what is now the DP World Tour). In contrast to many of his compatriots, he was willing and able to test himself on unfamiliar courses that contrasted wildly with the relative sameness of the PGA Tour.

A particular devotee of links golf—he is a past winner of the Junior Open Championship—the now-32-year-old Reed clearly enjoys the variety of golf by the seaside and the amount of time the ball necessarily spends on the ground rather than in the air.

“I enjoy the different questions we get asked on a links,” he says. “There are like 10 different ways you can play every shot. So you have to commit to one way and allow all that other noise in your head to escape. In that respect, links golf is more mental than physical. On tour, we all have the physical talent. But the winner is always the guy who can really believe the ball will fly a certain number and let it run to the hole. Or the guy who can hit a shot so far off what appears to be the correct line, yet know that the ball will get back to the flag.”

MORE: The prize money payout for the BMW PGA Championship

None of which has anything to do with the nine-under-par 63 Reed shot at Wentworth on Sunday in the final round of the BMW PGA Championship. The wind was almost non-existent, the ground soft underfoot. In other words, conditions were set up perfectly for low scores. And Reed took advantage. As did playing partner, Lee Westwood, who shot 65. The pair combined for a better-ball score of 58, one or other making birdie on each of the last nine-holes. It might not be the most interesting form of the game, but Reed can clearly do hit-and-stick as well as bounce-and-roll.

Still, it wasn’t for details of a round that contained only one 5 (on the 18th) that Reed was asked to speak to the press. Inevitably, he was quizzed more on his experiences off the course at the end of a controversial week marked by conflict between those of a LIV persuasion and those more inclined to an establishment view. And, as ever, Reed was stout in his defense of the Saudi-backed circuit that has done so much to upset professional golf’s equilibrium and insistent that his trips across the Atlantic continue to be filled with nothing but fun and laughter.

“The guys have been supportive and acting the same way to me as if whenever I was playing on the PGA Tour,” he said. “I feel like we have a mutual respect, the guys on The European Tour and myself. I've consistently played over here since 2015, whether in this tournament, a Rolex Series or a regular European Tour event. So I've shown my support consistently. The fans were great this week and very supportive. Which is nice because I plan to continue coming to England.”

Indeed, in contrast with Westwood and Ian Poulter, and at the request of DP World Tour chief executive, Keith Pelley, Reed made didn’t wear his LIV Golf-logoed clothing.

“LIV worked really hard to get clothing for me to wear this week,” he said. “That shows not only respect for the sponsors but the respect they have for me as a player. There's a picture out there of me on Wednesday with a logo on. But I got my clothing literally an hour and 40 minutes before I teed off on Thursday. It was awesome that we were able to get that done.

“At the end of the day, I hope all the tours work something out and get together. There’s no point in all this going back and forth and people smearing other people because it does nothing for us, does nothing for the brand and does nothing for golf. We need to allow the guys to play, be competitive and do what we do best. That’s play golf and allow us to take care of ourselves.”

He wasn’t done there either. Repeating a familiar refrain, Reed pleaded the case that playing the DP World Tour and LIV is no different from a schedule combining DP World and PGA Tour events.

“I’ve played on two tours my whole life, my whole career,” he insisted. “I've played on the PGA Tour and European Tour at the same time. I don't see any difference between me playing the PGA Tour and here and playing on LIV and here. LIV only have 14 events next year, which means I'll be over here more. Guys are like, oh, you joined LIV to play a lesser schedule. Well, I'm a guy that's played 31 to 34 events a year. So if I played 14 on LIV and I play six here, that's 20 and 11 to 14 extra weeks I can spend time with my family. As a player, I hope the tours do the right thing and allow us to play but at the end of the day that's not our decision.”

There was time for one more question, one that was only mildly loaded: If it were to happen, how did Reed think the world would react to a LIV player winning here this week?

“The guys that are on LIV are really, really good golfers,” he pointed out. “I'm sure there would be some kind of media s--t storm That is the easiest way to put it. But, that being said, it would be no different if it was last year and the same guys were playing the PGA Tour, would it? At the end of the day, if you take everything away—all the hoopla—it would be just another top player coming over and winning a golf tournament. There's no big media frenzy when a European comes over and wins on the PGA Tour. And when Billy [Horschel] won here last year it felt like the same as if a normal player won from over here. I don't think there should be anything different in terms of reaction. It just shows that the LIV guys are still ready to play and hungry for competition.”

Former Masters champion Patrick Reed and PGA Tour veteran Pat Perez are the latest golfers to join the Saudi-back LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Reed and Perez raise the number of PGA Tour players to sign with the breakaway circuit to 20, with the 17 competing in the first event this week suspended by the Tour as soon as play started at Centurion Club on Thursday.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the "same fate holds true" for any players who compete in future LIV events despite being denied permission, with Reed and Bryson DeChambeau set to contest the second event in Oregon at the end of the month.

"I'm super excited," Reed said during the final-round broadcast of the opening event. "Just the thought of being able to be a part of an evolution and a change in golf for the better, for me, is unbelievable. I've been watching all weekend and with the format, the way everything is, I'm super excited and I can't wait to be a part of it.

"It's refreshing to see team golf again. It brings you back to the good old days in college and back to the Ryder Cups and Presidents Cup, where you're out there not just for yourself but also playing for your team.

Reed's arrival means he is the fifth former Masters champion to agree to join LIV Golf, following Phil Mickelson, Charl Schwartzel, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson. Another former winner of the Green Jacket, 2012 and 2014 champion Bubba Watson, is widely expected to join the circuit after being included in a LIV Golf promotional video.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said: "The growing roster of LIV Golf players gets even stronger today with a player of Patrick Reed's calibre. He has a proven track record as one of the most consistent competitors in pro golf and adds yet another big presence at our tournaments.

"He's a major champion who has had a significant impact playing international team competitions, and he'll bring another impressive dynamic to our team-based format at LIV Golf."

The two latest signings follow Bryson DeChambeau confirming his switch on Friday, with Perez's move to LIV Golf initially leaked by his wife on social media before being announced officially during final-round coverage.

"I'm very excited," Perez said. "It's a new chapter in my life. Since 1998 I've been on the road, grinding out and trying to do as much as I could in the game. An opportunity came along like this, I just couldn't be more excited for all the aspects that it's bringing to me. I'm over the moon about it.

"Now we're official, we're looking forward and we're really excited about going through this."

The inaugural event in London is the first of eight tournaments due to take place over the next few months, including five in the United States and two in Asia, with an expanded schedule then planned in the coming years.

Pumpkin Ridge GC in Portland from June 30-July 2 and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster from July 29-31 are the next two events, with further US-based tournaments take place in Boston from September 2-4 and Chicago from September 16-18.

Stonehill Golf Club in Bangkok is the venue from October 7-9 and Royal Greens Golf Club - the site of the Saudi International in recent years - hosts the following week, with the season-ending Team Championship then hosted at Trump National Doral Miami from October 27-30.

HERTFORDSHIRE, England – Once referred to as “Captain America” for his Ryder Cup prowess, Patrick Reed is leaving the PGA Tour to join the LIV Golf Invitational Series, becoming the latest player to join forces with the controversial new venture that began this week at the Centurion Club.

Reed, 31, will play in the next LIV Golf event scheduled for June 30-July 2 in Portland, Ore., and will be joined by Bryson DeChambeau, who was announced Friday . Pat Perez is also joining LIV. Perez’ wife, Ashley, announced the decision on her Instagram account.

Patrick Reed

Patrick Reed is the latest player with name recognition to join LIV Golf and will play in the Portland, Ore., event June 30-July 2.

With Reed on board, the series will have past Masters winners Phil Mickelson , Charl Schwartzel, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson. Reed won the Masters in 2018.

“The growing roster of LIV Golf players gets even stronger today with a player of Patrick Reed’s caliber,’’ said LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman. “He has a proven track record as one of the most consistent competitors in pro golf and adds yet another big presence at our tournaments.

“He’s a major champion who has had a significant impact playing international team competitions, and he’ll bring another impressive dynamic to our team-based format at LIV Golf.”

Reed established himself as one of the top U.S. performers at the Ryder Cup, posting a 7-3-2 overall record, despite a poor performance at the 2018 competition in France where the U.S. was defeated easily. Having suffered with double pneumonia last summer, Reed was unable to make the U.S. team on points and was not selected as one of Steve Stricker’s captain’s picks.

Reed has had little success on the course since then. He has one top-10 finish in his last 15 worldwide starts and he has not won since his 2021 Farmers Insurance Open victory, his ninth PGA Tour title. At the time, Reed was ranked No. 9 in the Official World Golf Ranking but has since dropped to No. 36. .

“I’m super excited,’’ Reed said during the LIV broadcast. “It’s exciting to be part of an evolution in change for golf. I’m excited to be a part of it.’’
