11 Days Uganda Plus Gorillas Tour

11 Days Uganda Plus Gorillas

Epic trip. Had to take one shot at an African Safari incase can’t go again. After lot of research chose Uganda because that is the only place where in addition to the big 5 you can do mountain gorilla trekking. Saw huge number of elephants on land and water, hippos in huge colonies and even 3 grazing at night in our resort grounds. Saw leopard climbing down tree as well as pride of lions in close proximity. Saw a number of white rhinos giraffes huge herds of water buffalos, Nile crocodiles in addition to multitude of birds. The chimpanzee trek was a good preparation for the ultimate gorilla trek in biwindi impenetrable forest. The people of Uganda are very very courteous and polite. Our tour guide Bosco and driver Vince tried hard to make the trip memorable and were very attentive to our needs. Strongly recommend .

Our travel consultant from DAS was extremely helpful when my friends and I were planning our weeklong Gorillas Trek and Safari. He was very detailed when answering our questions and had nice suggestions for better and cheaper lodges than our initial request. Gorillas permits were also cheaper in Uganda. We did a mix of water on Kazinga channel, chimps in Kibale and gorillas in Bwindi which was absolutely incredible with Herbert. He made our trip very interesting with his valuable input and experience tracking animals on the game drives. Meeting with friendly Batwa pygmies was also very nice. Everything was well laid out and we have no complaints about anything. I recommend DAS and hope my friends also share their appreciation soon.

Friends of the Silverback Tour

Friends of the Silverback

I traveled to Uganda in March 2023 with Tourilla Tours to see the magnificent gorillas in their natural setting. I had a wonderful day, and I can state with certainty that Tourilla Tours exceeded my expectations. The entire trip was meticulously planned, and the tour guides were experts in their industry who were passionate about Uganda's animals and culture. Naturally, the gorilla trekking was the trip's highlight. Although the trip was difficult, we were able to make it through the thick trees and catch a peek of the gentle giants with the help of the tour guides. Getting a close-up look at these amazing creatures was a wonderful experience. The lodging and dining arrangements made by Tourilla Tours were excellent, offering. Thanks for having us in this once in a lifetime experience.  Special thanks to our tour guide, Twairu!

What people love about Fully Guided Tours in Uganda

Let me start by saying that booking our Uganda/Rwanda safari through Mukisa was truly one of the best decisions that we’ve ever made! I am the type of person that meticulously plans every trip and will read through countless reviews, itineraries, etc. before making a decision. For this trip in particular, we were looking for a private tour that had a wide range of activities from multiple treks to game drives and cultural experiences. What initially drew me to Mukisa was the positive feedback from other guests and a mention on their website that they encourage/aid female tour guides. Upon reaching out through their website, I was immediately impressed with Richard’s quick responses, level of detail and ability to accommodate all of our requests. We started with the “10 Days Safari to Encounter Uganda’s Gorillas, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour” but Richard was able to help us customize the trip and integrate other activities that we were interested in - for example, my husband and I wanted to include a bike ride at the end of our trip. We originally didn’t think this could be part of our safari experience so reached out to a few local bike companies but received no responses. I posed the question to Richard (thinking it would be difficult to accommodate) and within 24 hours, he had found us a bike guide and adjusted our trip’s itinerary. Richard showed a tremendous amount of professionalism throughout the planning process, and loved that he met us in-person at the start of our trip! In terms of the actual safari, I could write several pages on all of the things that we loved but I’ll keep it to a few highlights: 1. The safari had an incredibly wide range of things to do, see, explore, etc. - from the types of animals (we were able to see the Big 5!) to the environments, ranging from jungle to forest to savannah. It was a lot to squeeze into 11 days but we truly feel like we left Uganda/Rwanda with a well-rounded experience. 2. All of the accommodations were conveniently located, clean and comfortable. If possible, we would recommend staying at the same hotel for at least 2 nights/each so you can feel settled and potentially upgrading 1-2 hotels, if you’re looking for additional amenities (e.g. swimming pool). Elephant Hab was our favorite hotel in Uganda. 3. We absolutely adored our guide & driver! Most of the other tour groups that we encountered had a single male guide/driver and we loved that Mukisa prioritized giving opportunities to female guides. Mable and Solomon went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed every aspect of our trip and even made adjustments to the itinerary on the fly. Mable had a wealth of knowledge about the animals, culture, people, etc. and Solomon was an exceptional driver - making sure we saw all of the animals on our bucket list and navigating the constantly changing conditions. 4. It was quite clear that Mukisa has a strong reputation in the safari community. Several of the hotel managers and rangers made comments to us that they always enjoy working with Mukisa, and they have some of the best guides/drivers. If you’ve made it this far through my review then I hope you’re now considering Mukisa for your upcoming trip. I do not typically write extensive reviews but I genuinely think that this company is one of the best out there and will make this trip everything you could’ve imagined and more!

About Kampala

Things to do in Kampala

Once called the city of 7 Hills, Kampala now sprawls over 20 hills till the northern shore of Lake Victoria – Africa’s largest lake.

Located in Central Uganda, the metropolis has been the de facto capital since the 14 th century, when King Kato Kintu, the founder of the Buganda Kingdom, chose the area as his administrative base. Future Buganda kings welcomed Arab traders and British explorers.

Before the British and Arabs arrived in Uganda, Kampala was a hunting ground for the Kings. It had one of Uganda’s largest populations of Impala and that is where the name Kampala comes from. Kampala is today Uganda’s major industrial and commercial city.

There is variety of places visit in Kampala. We can tailor this one day Kampala city tour basing on your preferences and needs. If you only want certain activities or visiting certain places, we will change the program according to your interests. If you have a full day, you can visit like five places but if you have few hours, you can tour three prominent places. Here are the details of the best sites you can visit:

Details Of The Sites You Can Visit On This Kampala City Tour :

The kabaka’s palace.

The Kabaka’s Palace on Mengo hill commands 360-degree views over Kampala City. The palace was the official residence of the king of Buganda.

Buganda is a geographical region of the biggest and most prominent tribe in Uganda – the Baganda. It is the gateway to Uganda, and Buganda gave Uganda her name. When you fly into Uganda, you’ll arrive through Buganda. Therefore before continuing on your wildlife safari in Uganda , a tour of this palace will introduce you to the history and culture of Buganda and Uganda.

You’ll learn about the impeccable political and cultural organizational structure of the Buganda kingdom. It is little wonder that the colonial British were blown away by a political organization so well organized and somewhat similar to theirs, that Uganda was not declared a colony like their many other African countries. It was declared a protectorate and the Buganda kingdom’s structures were used by the British to govern and conquer the rest of Uganda.

Bulange Royal Building

Bulange building gate is exactly 1 mile from the Kabaka’s Palace gate. Its compound features a small souvenir shop that has been named the – cultural corner. The cultural corner contains many traditional items that were used back in the day before modernity in the day-to-day lives of the people. These include Omweso (board game), Olubugo (Backcloth), local drums, and others.

Bulange Royal Building houses the Lukiiko which is the parliament of Buganda Kingdom. Your tour here will also be an educating experience on the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial history of Buganda and Uganda, giving you a lesson about the rich cultures of the black people. It is a revelation into the wonderful administration systems of a people that are absurdly portrayed to have lived a primitive wild life before the white man arrived.

The Royal Mile & The Clans Of Buganda

The Buganda Royal Mile is a straight path exactly 1 mile long from the gate of the Bulange Building to the gate of the Kabaka’s palace.

After exiting Bulange tour you can set out to walk the 1 mile to the Kabaka’s Palace just like the Kabaka’s used to do back in the day. This one mile walk on the royal mile is also a fascinating journey through Buganda history and culture. The path is lined by 52 trees known as kabaka anjagala which represent the 52 clans of Buganda.

Buganda kingdom is a clan-based society. You’ll learn about the different clans and their different roles in the Kingdom as well as their totems. Along the mile are also important houses or buildings that date back since the 1800s, one such includes the first storied building in Uganda, Butikiro which was the official residence of the Katikiro (prime minister) etc.

Ntawetwa – The King Does Not Bend

Ntawetwa is a roundabout at a junction along the Royal mile which was modified with a continuous passage of the royal mile through the round-about with a gate that is only opened for the Kabaka.

This was done so that the Kabaka does not go round the roundabout since he is not supposed to face any obstacle on his way from the palace to Bulange and back. It is a very interesting structure on the royal mile.

Idi Amin’s Torture Chamber

Inside the Kabaka’s Palace is the infamous torture chamber where Idi Id Amin Dada Oumee (one of the grievous dictators in African history) brought political victims and suspected rebels for interrogation and execution.

When Amin took over the Kabaka’s palace and turned it into a military post in the 1970’s he invited the Israels to build him an armory which they did. After a few months he turned it into an interrogation and torture chamber where it is believe more than ten thousand victims faced their death. As we speak now, Idi Amin died in 2003 but the torture chamber still exists as a testimony of his brutal life on power.

Kabaka’s Lake

Once the palace and Bulange visit is over you can slope down to the Kabaka’s lake to refresh and shake off the sad mood after torture chamber story. The Kabaka’s lake is one of the few known man-made lakes in the world. And what is even more special is that it was dug with rudimentary digging tools.

The lake was made by the youthful flamboyant king, Kabaka Mwanga, who wanted a channel of water from the palace connecting to Lake Victoria which he enjoyed visiting. The channel would serve for recreation but also a route for easy escape via Lake Victoria in case the palace was to be attacked.

Another popular cultural and historic site you can visit on the Kampala city tour . The tombs are a burial site, the resting place of the last four kings of the Buganda Kingdom, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a rich cultural attraction that harbors rich history about the Buganda kingdom and several traditions about kingship.

Namugongo Marty’s Shrine

The Uganda martyrs shrines tour in Kampala is one of the most spiritually nourishing experiences for a Christian pilgrim. It is also a great source of history about religion in Uganda.

The site is where several converted Christian pages (helpers) in the King Mwanga’s Palace were burnt alive. The pages had disobeyed the Buganda Kingdom king’s orders that were contradictory to their faiths and accepted to die for their beliefs when the king ordered their killing.

Gadaffi Mosque – Uganda National Mosque

A gift from the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, the Gaddafi Mosque is a treat for both Muslims and non-Muslims. A visit to the mosque was voted by TripAdvisor as the #1 thing to do in Kampala. Also called Uganda National Mosque, this impressive, copper-domed building is one of the largest mosques in East and Central Africa. It is capable of holding almost 20,000 worshippers.

It is found on old Kampala hill close to the central business district. The huge prayer hall is decorated with stained glass from Italy, an enormous blue and red woven carpet, and intricate chandeliers from Egypt. It is mostly visited for its 60m high minaret. Climbing the 306 steps to the top of the minaret rewards you with a stunning 360 degree view of Kampala city – the perfect way want to capture an aerial shot of Kampala city without flying a drone.

Bahai Temple

During your Kampala city tour , you can also visit the Mother Temple of Africa, also known as the continent’s only Baha’i faith house of worship. The temple is one of nine Baha’i Temples across the globe and was East Africa’s tallest building when it was built in 1961. Standing majestically on the top of Kikaya Hill, it’s one of Uganda’s most beautiful buildings, with stunning architectural design. Like all Baha’i temples, it’s a circular 9-sided dome.

Inside, fixed mosaic tiles from Italy line the dome’s arched roof, with coloured glass in the wall panels that came from Germany. The green, amber and pale blue glass tinted windows filter the light coming into the temple, lending itself to an effect of lightness that bounces off the floor, well adorned with Persian carpets. The temple is set in the middle of lush, green gardens with fields of brightly coloured flowers where many birds flutter. Bahai temple welcomes visitors of all faiths to pray and meditate in a serene environment.

The Uganda National Museum is located within the Kampala central division on Kitante road near the British High Commission. It was created in 1908 by the then British Colonial Officer George Wilson. It is the oldest museums in East Africa and provides an extensive look into the Uganda’s past.

At the National Museum, you will find exhibits showcasing traditional musical instruments, pre-colonial African history, ethnography, and traditional lifestyles of various tribes in Uganda. The museum contains historical artifacts that tell the origin of Uganda, information on the peoples and Uganda wildlife etc.

Ndere Cultural Center has the biggest and one of the oldest traditional dancing troops in Uganda. This highly professional dancing troupe was founded in 1986 as a Uganda cultural organization for universal unity through music, dance and drama. The centre organizes performances of over 40 different authentic dances and songs of the many tribes in Uganda, accompanied by various indigenous percussive, stringed and wind instruments.

Ndere Cultural Centre is one stop center to see Uganda’s diverse cultures showcased through the different traditional dances and songs. The shows take place in the evenings on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. It is a perfect place to end your day after a Kampala city tour .

Saint Pauls Cathedral- Namirembe

The history of Christianity in Uganda originated on Kampala’s Namirembe Hill, which today serves as the provincial seat of the Uganda Anglican Church. St. Paul’s cathedral is the oldest Anglican Church in Uganda. Namirembe is a Luganda word meaning ‘mother of peace’, but the history of its foundation was not always so.

Saint Mary’s Cathedral – Rubaga

Rubaga Cathedral is located on Rubaga hill near Mengo hill. It is the seat of the Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda. The cathedral has a long history dating back to the heyday of the Buganda Kingdom.

Local Markets & Craft Centers

Uganda is a self-sufficient country which grows a lot of food so you will have a great opportunity to taste and observe different fruits at Nakasero Market. You can also visit Owino Market, the biggest market in Kampala that is very popular in selling second hand clothes and everything. When in Kampala, you must also take the time to go shopping at the Craft Village on Buganda Road. You can browse around the varied stalls selling fantastic curios and knickknacks to take home as mementos of your vacation in Africa.

Makerere University is Uganda’s oldest, largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It is one of the best universities in Africa.

Makerere University has also produced over 7 presidents including Ugandan president Milton Obote and Tanzanian presidents Julius Nyerere and Benjamin Mkapa. The former president of DR Congo, Joseph Kabila, and former Kenyan president the late Mwai Kibaki are also Makerere alumni.

Also some of the most prominent writers in Africa, including Nuruddin Farah, Ali Mazrui, David Rubadiri, Okello Oculi, John Ruganda, Paul Theroux, Nobel Prize laureate V. S. Naipaul, and Peter Nazareth, were at Makerere University at one point in their writing and academic careers.

Gaddafi Mosque

It stands magnificently on old Kampala hill with the best view over Kampala city, commissioned by the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. The art with which it was built will totally amaze you, there is none like it in Uganda although Uganda has several mosques.

So, this mosque has a cool atmosphere inside with plush carpets and rich Moroccan architecture and art. Which presents a breathtaking view of the whole of Kampala city from its rooftop tower and can be accessed by climbing 280 steps to the top but it’s worth it.

Gaddafi National Mosque

Kabaka’s Palace

An official residence of the ruling king in Buganda, you will be taken through the amazing history of this kingdom, and you will be amazed at how these people of Buganda stood and fought to make Uganda what it is today, Buganda sits in the capital, Kampala, and much of Uganda’s history flows from Buganda.

Market sells several other items ranging from electronics such as radios, and TVs, to local herbs, jewelry, and food and it is a very crowded place, but in the end, it is always worth the long fascinating tiring adventure one has to experience first-hand.

After breakfast depart from the hotel, and explore the seven hills of Kampala (popularly known as the Rome of Uganda). We visit several places among which include:

The Uganda Museum:

A display of Uganda’s cultural heritage where one can see ethnological and natural-historical exhibitions. It is a vivid reminder of the country’s colorful past. The Uganda Museum (founded in 1908) in Kampala has exhibits of traditional culture, archeology, history, science, and natural history. It regularly presents performances of traditional music.

One of its most interesting features is the collection of traditional musical instruments, which one is free to play. The National Museum of Uganda is located in Kampala, the capital. The museum contains rich materials from Uganda and is a must-see.

The Uganda Society’s library is housed in one room of the Uganda National Museum. Started in the 1930s by a group of scholars, the collection is comprised of approximately 3,000 volumes, maps, periodicals, and photographs, all pertaining to African history, culture, sociology, travel, and science.

In addition to its collection, the library houses the books of the East African Wildlife Society and a number of books from the museum which were given to the society’s care some years ago. Although the library was a circulating library for many years, due to the limited availability of the books and their value, the collection is currently available for reference use only.

Kasubi Tombs

Kasubi tombs are where fallen kings of the Buganda Kingdom are buried. The Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi constitute a site embracing almost 30 ha of hillside within the Kampala district. At its core on the hilltop is the former palace of the Kabakas of Buganda, built in 1882 and converted into the royal burial ground in 1884.

Four royal tombs now lie within the Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main building, which is circular and surmounted by a dome. It is a major example of an architectural achievement in organic materials, principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle, and daub. The site’s main significance lies, however, in its intangible values of belief, spirituality, continuity, and identity.

Nakasero Market

At noon on Saturday, January 1895, the right Reverend Mckay advised the then Kabaka of Buganda to establish the first market in the Lubiri(Palace). In 1905 the market moved to Kabugube and this was a temporary structure. Here you can find a variety of huge variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, mostly indigenous to Uganda.

Across the street is a lower market, full of spices, legumes, grains, and hand-made household items. This market is surrounded by a number of shops or dukas, where you find everything for the home. Hardware, sanitary -ware, and electrical shops surround the area. The Owino market is one of the largest in this region of Africa.

The endless booths that line the chaotic alleys of Owino offer a mind-boggling array of everything from homemade irons, to American hand-me-down-clothes with the Goodwill price tags still on them, to an amazing array of African foods, to any and everything else under the sun. Everything at Owino starts cheap and gets cheaper with bargaining.

If you’re in the market for souvenirs, check out the craft market on Buganda Road or the slightly larger crafts market behind the national theater near the Garden City complex. Also on Buganda Road across the street from the craft market, you find a number of tailors if you are looking to have clothes sewn. And if you’re tired from shopping the (upscale) cafe 1000 Cups of Coffee is a relaxing Mzungu hangout.

Rubaga Hill

Rubaga hill was taken up by the Roman Catholics (and the first roman catholic church here); Rubaga hill was the location of the main palace of Kabaka Muteesa I who ruled Buganda between 1856 and 1884. The palace was struck by lightning and was rebuilt on neighboring Mengo Hill.

The first Roman Catholic missionaries to arrive in Buganda were Frenchmen, Father Pierre Lourdel Monpel and Brother Amans, who settled near the hill in 1879. As the Catholic Church took root in the country, the missionaries were allocated land on Lubaga Hill.

The construction of St. Mary’s Cathedral on Lubaga Hill took place between 1914 and 1925, with the assistance of monetary contributions from Roman Catholic congregations abroad. Later, the missionaries also built a hospital and a nursing school on the hill.

Today, Lubaga remains the seat of the headquarters of the Catholic Church in Uganda. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala. The remains of the first African Catholic bishop in Uganda, Bishop Joseph Nakabaale Kiwanuka, and those of the first African Catholic Cardinal, Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga are kept in the Catholic Mission on the hill.

Namirembe Cathedral

Namirembe Cathedral is the Anglican Christians’ oldest church here; Mengo hill which has the headquarters of the traditional (the largest of Uganda’s traditional monarchies). The hill rises 4,134 feet (1,260 m) above sea level. It stands adjacent to Mengo Hill, the seat of the Buganda Government.

The history of the two hills is intertwined, geographically, politically, and religiously. Namirembe is the location of St. Paul’s Cathedral, the main place of worship of the Anglican Church in Uganda, from the time of its construction (1915 to 1919), until the 1960’s when the Cathedral became the seat of the Diocese of Namirembe.

At that time, the headquarters of the Church of Uganda moved to All Saints Church in Nakasero. The Anglican Faith is the religion most closely associated with the Buganda Monarchy since the end of the religious wars of the 1890s.

Visit the Kabaka’s lake (Kayanja Ka Kabaka), the largest man-made lake here dug up on orders of the tyrant Sekkabaka Mwanga (also a former King), who needed it as an escape route besides being a place for water sport just adjacent to his kingdom headquarters– Mengo.

After driving to Kampala central visit Nakasero market and a curio shop for some craft shops. This tour can be done any time of the year. It can also be done at the start or at the end of any of our other safari packages.

These sites include; the mosques for the Islamic religion such as Gadhafi mosque, Kibuli Mosque, churches such as Namirembe , Nsambya, Rubaga, Namugongo , and Bahai temple . So in Uganda, everyone is free to worship where they want.

The Kampala City Tour always offers an awesome everlasting experience of moving around the city full of hotels, bars, markets, schools, hospitals, churches, mosques, museums, shops and a whole lot of things that make kampala the best city to visit once on a Uganda tour.

Currently, the capital city of Uganda lies on 21 hills but the major known hills are seven hills including Mengo hill, Rubaga hill, Namirembe hill, Makerere hill, Kololo hill, Nakasero hill, and Kampala hill (Old kampala hill and each of these hills has its own attractions that visitors on a Uganda capital city tour are always encouraged to book their tours with local tour operators like Achieve Global Safaris based in Uganda who organizes all tours around Uganda and other east African countries  to have a blissful experience of their lives. Below are some of the attractions and sightings found in the capital city of Uganda that attract several visitors around the world to explore Uganda’s capital city.

Taking a tour to Kampala hill is the major thing that shouldn’t be missed out once on a tour to the capital city of Uganda. Kampala hill is surrounded by mengo hill in the south, Namirembe hill in the west, Nakasero hill in the east and makerere hill in the north. All in all, kampala hill was the first hill that obtained its name from the word Impala due to the fact that the hill had several impalas that the kabaka of Buganda used to hunt before the hill became a capital city of Uganda and later on after the expansion of the city to other hills which are 21 hills now, kampala hill changed its name to old kampala hill up to present.

The old Kampala hill is raised to about 4000ft above the sea level near the captain Fredrick Lugard’s fort and old Kampala secondary school alongside several bars, restaurants and many more that catch the eyes of the viewer. This hill was the first and is situated at the center of Uganda’s capital city and it has a lot of things to visit ranging from religious sites, hotels, historical monuments and many more. This visit on the old Kampala hill takes visitors through different directions offering a lot of interesting architecture of several buildings such as the Gadhafi mosque which is the national mosque located on Kampala hill. This mosque was commissioned by late Gadhafi who by then was the president of Libya and it’s on this mosque that the supreme council offices for the Muslims are situated. This mosque is also referred to as the Old Kampala Mosque because it lies on the old Kampala hill.

Visiting the old Kampala mosque (Gadhafi mosque) is the most fascinating thing especially for the Muslims that one shouldn’t miss out on while on a Uganda capital city tour in Uganda. Gadhafi mosque is a national mosque located on the old Kampala hill in the city center and it’s on this hill that the supreme council for the Muslims is situated.

There is also the cultural tours where visitors meet the Ndere troupe for several traditional dances that most visitors on a Uganda city tour ought not to miss out on their tour bucket.

A Uganda capital city tour to Namirembe hill is yet another riveting adventure that a person on a tour to Uganda, especially on a capital city tour, shouldn’t miss out with several sightings including the St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe which is the oldest and the first Anglican diocese in the church of Uganda with a very beautiful and unique design and a clear view of the city and it’s on this hill that the Archbishop of all the Anglican churches in Uganda seats.

Namirembe hill is adjacent to the Rubaga hill where the Roman Catholic cathedral lies known as Rubaga Cathedral which is also a beautiful structure to visit while on a Uganda city tour.

More city tours are done on Mulago hill which derived its name from a medicinal plant omulago that grew on the hill and the king suna11 used it to chase away the ancestral spirits. Mulago hill is mainly covered by the health-related facilities including the Uganda national referral hospital known as Mulago hospital which is the only national referral with several services, Makerere University College of health sciences, Uganda cancer institute, Uganda heart institute, Kampala city mortuary, several nurses hostel, doctor’s village, several pharmacies and laboratories. It’s on Mulago hill that the headquarters for the Uganda Wildlife Authority , British embassy and Uganda national museum where some of the historical tools and instruments are kept for historical and research purposes. This museum is amongst the top destinations during the Uganda city tour.

Visitors on a Kampala city tour also visit the Kasubi hill known for accommodating the kasubi tombs which are burial grounds for the Buganda royal family members in the Buganda kingdom. In 2010, these kasubi tombs were burnt down and destroyed hence marking them as endangered on the list world heritage sites. The first person to be buried in kasubi tombs is the 35 th kabaka of Buganda Samuel Mutesa 1. Kasubi hill is close to the old Kampala hill and is easily accessible from the city center by either motorbike (boda), car or by foot depending on the visitors’ choice.

Mengo hill also has got a whole lot of attractions for visitors on a Kampala city tour ranging from the Buganda king’s palace and the torture chambers for Dictator Idi Amini Dada . Mengo hill has a lot of Ugandan history regarding the Buganda kingdom and Idi Amin’s regime. It is on this hill that over 30,000 people were executed to death. Mengo hill also has some healthy and educational facilities including the mengo hospital and several schools.

Visiting Makerere hill offers the sightings of the East African prestigious institute of learning none other than Makerere University. This hill also has several residential places for university students and other people. Several businesses also are carried out on the makerere hill.

Visit the Bahai temple which is a place of worship for Bahai faith that originated from India situated on Kikaya hill with the best vegetation of trees, green grass for sitting on and a freshness breathtaking cool air from the trees and flowers planted around the temple. This temple was constructed on 52 acres of land a few miles from the city center Kampala.

A tour to Nsambya hill is yet another interesting tour to enjoy during the Uganda capital city tour. Nsambya hill is situated at an elevation of 4,010 ft. with several schools, churches, Nsambya hospital and many more. Nsambya hill offers a crystal clear view of Kampala city, Lake Victoria and the American embassy all on a hill.

For the visitors who need to exploit more than just the city center, then trailing all the major seven hills of Kampala alongside the surrounding areas such as Namugongo shrines situated along the Jinja road where several believers were killed due to their faith and up to now, Uganda still celebrates them as martyrs in June every year, visit Entebbe zoo to witness the king of the jungle , sail on lake Victoria or any beach along the Entebbe road, and finally enjoy the street foods including the chapatti, yellow bananas, and fruits.

How best can one explore the capital city of Uganda?

Well, depending on the traffic and congestion of Uganda’s capital city, I would recommend visitors to use the “boda- boda” means of transport which can take the short cuts and avoid the traffic in the congested city. Visitors who aren’t in hurry can opt for a safari vehicle or a private car since the roads in the city aren’t that bad.

However, the other option of exploring the slums and all the hidden corners of the city is by walking on foot with a local guide to have the maximum viewing and better photographs.

“All in all, a tour to Uganda’s capital city is more practical than theory so come and grab an everlasting experience in the capital city of Uganda the pearl of Africa.”

Interested in visiting the capital city of Uganda, then look no further than booking your 1 or 2 days Kampala city tour to have the climax of the capital city of Uganda the pearl of Africa.

On this tour, you will visit most well-known monuments and top tourist attractions in Kampala . City Tour in Kampala Uganda

Grace, our knowledgeable female tour guide, made us feel safe walking around the chaotic city and told me when it would be better to put away my camera gear .

Is Kampala safe for tourists?

I honestly felt safe in Kampala all the time; even on the busy markets. Just be aware of pickpockets and use your common sense. Is Kampala safe at night? I suggest to avoid traveling after dark outside the main towns. It's also safer to avoid driving at night as roads can be in bad condition (potholes, badly signposted). Want to go out for dinner at night? Taking an Uber in Kampala is very safe.

What is the price for a city tour in Kampala?

Prices for a city tour in Kampala vary from $30-$100 depending on the hours of exploring (half-day or full-day) and mode of transportation. You can opt for a motorized tour or a simple walking tour in Kampala . A combination of these options is advisable to cover more of all the top sights Kampala has to offer. Sites Travel Ltd can customize the tour to your personal wishes and advise about what to do in Kampala or organize your safari in Uganda .

Uganda National Mosque Kampala

The mosque (initially built by Idi Amin Dada) got its nickname Gaddafi Mosque because the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi funded various infrastructure projects, including the mosque, which became a symbol of the historical ties between Libya and Uganda during Gaddafi’s rule. Following Gaddafi’s fall from power in 2011, the name of the mosque became a subject of controversy and got renamed to Uganda National Mosque .

Lubiri Palace Kampala

When you visit Kampala, make sure to explore the historic Kabaka's Palace , also known as the Lubiri Palace. Situated on the Royal Mile in the heart of Kampala city, the Lubiri Palace served as the residence of the Kabakas. The Kabakas were the traditional rulers of the Buganda kingdom, dating back to the 19th century during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II. Today, the palace also houses the Buganda Parliament (Lukiiko), where the Lukiiko convenes to discuss and deliberate on matters related to the Buganda kingdom's governance, culture, and development.

The Kabaka palace complex showcases traditional Buganda architecture, like thatched roofs and intricate woodwork. You can take a guided tour including the royal residences, courtyards, ceremonial spaces, and Idi Amin's prison.

Idi Amin's Torture Chambers

Idi Amin's Armoury Kabakas Palace

Idi Amin’s Torture Chambers , also known as the Haunted Mansion or Amin's Haunted House is one of the most sad but interesting places to visit in Kampala. It is a building with a dark history associated with the regime of former Ugandan President Idi Amin. During Idi Amin's presidency, Uganda witnessed widespread human rights abuses and political repression. Many individuals were subjected to torture and violence under Amin's regime.

Idi Amin's Haunted House

The Haunted Mansion is believed to be one of the places where Amin's security forces carried out their brutal activities. Stories and rumors of paranormal occurrences, ghostly apparitions, and lingering negative energies have emerged over the years, contributing to the haunted reputation of the site.

torture cells Mengo Palace aka Kabakas Palace

When you visit the site, you will encounter a dark concrete tunnel with prison cells. These cells used to be separated by an electrified body of water to prevent prisoners from escaping. Each torture cell had over 100 people with no ventilation, water, or food.

Unfortunately, over 200,000 people died in these torture chambers. When you visit Idi Amin's Torture Chambers you can still see heartbreaking messages on the walls of the torture cells written by former prisoners. Other signs you can find are bullet holes and scratches of resistance. I found the torture chambers impressive and ominous. It gave me goosebumps all over.

You'll also find the remains of Mutesa’s Rolls-Royce which was destroyed by Idi Amin. Nowadays, the palace is called Mengo Palace due to its location on (Nkaawo) Mengo Hill, one of the 7 Kampala Hills.

Is Kampala worth visiting?

Is Kampala worth visiting?

When I first visited Uganda in 2018, I skipped Kampala in my 3-week itinerary because I read it’s too much chaos, not really a clean city, and nothing much to do. Since Kampala is the heart and soul of Uganda , I really wanted to explore the capital city whenever I would visit Uganda again, and I’m super happy I did! I will even visit Kampala again next time, as there’s still more to explore.

Is Kampala a clean city?  Not really! They try to keep the streets clean but there's a lot of dirt everywhere and looking at Kigali in Rwanda , Kampala still has a lot of work to do. Is Kampala chaotic? 100%. You just have to adapt and go with the flow to find peace in the crowds going about their daily lives.

Kampala Tourist Attractions and Markets

So, yes, Kampala is a place worth visiting ! From delving into the country's rich heritage at the Uganda Museum to exploring the serene shores of Lake Victoria, this city offers a diverse range of experiences.

Where to book a Kampala Walking Tour?

Book a Kampala Walking Tour and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and flavors that make this African gem shine.

Plan your trip to Kampala today, and let this remarkable city leave an indelible mark on your travel memories. We booked our guided city tour through  Sites Travel , a local woman-owned travel agency based in the Kampala Serena Hotel that is listed as the best romantic places in Kampala.

It's obviously not the only one offering walking tours in Kampala or a full-day Kampala Tour but I had a good experience with them. They picked us up from the hotel , we first drove to a few sights more outside of downtown Kampala and then started our walking tour along the markets and old taxi park etc.

When is the best time to visit Kampala?

The best time to visit Kampala is all year round! Some people advise the dry season months of mid-December to February and June to August, but I traveled to Uganda in the shoulder seasons or rainy season in Uganda (March/April and October/November) and I really loved to visit Uganda and Kampala during that time. The average coldest month in Kampala, Uganda is July.

Kampala City is enormous, and there are probably more beautiful places to visit or unique things to do. Kampala also has a lot of monuments, like The Independence Monument , the Sir Edward Muteesa Monument, the World War 1 & 2 monuments, the sculpture of Sir Apollo Kagwa, the Statue of Leadership, and the Nakasero Hindu Temple . Kampala is also known for its Makerere University which was the only educational institute of its kind in East Africa for many years. That's also the reason why many prominent figures from Kenya , Tanzania , and Uganda at Makerere University, including Milton Obote, the former president of Uganda.

From Kampala, you can also plan  other things to do in Uganda ; for example, Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi National Park , Shoe bill Watching along the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe, Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale , hiking along the Sipi Falls or go on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park. The city was built on 7 hills (Old Kampala, Kololo, Mengo, Rubaga, Nsambya, Namirembe and Kibuli) initially but has now grown to cover over 20 hills.

Discovering the Heart of Uganda: Kampala City Tour

Kampala city tour – unveiling uganda’s national and commercial capital:.

Kampala , the bustling national and commercial capital of Uganda , stands proudly on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. This vibrant city blends the charm of tree-covered hills adorned with red-tile villas and modern urbanity reflected in contemporary skyscrapers. At its heart, the Uganda Museum stands as a testament to the country’s rich tribal heritage, housing an extensive collection of valuable artifacts. Nearby, perched atop Mengo Hill, the Lubiri Palace, once the seat of the Buganda Kingdom, whispers tales of regal history.

Embarking on Top Activities in Kampala:

Kampala’s historical significance – idi amin’s torture chambers in lubiri bulange:.

Nestled within Lubiri Mengo Palace , the Idi Amin torture chamber unveils a haunting chapter in Uganda’s history. Originally constructed as an armory for safeguarding firearms, it played a role during Idi Amin’s short-lived presidency.

Gadhafi’s National Mosque:

The Uganda National Mosque , gracing Kampala Hill in the Old Kampala area, is a striking architectural marvel completed in 2006. With a capacity to accommodate up to 15,000 worshipers and an additional 1,100 in the gallery, it also boasts a terrace that can host 3,500 more.

Nakasero Market:

Nakasero Market , nestled at the base of Nakasero Hill, is a bustling hub of commerce in Kampala. This vibrant market offers a treasure trove of fresh produce, textiles, shoes, and affordable electronics. Situated just 50 meters off the Entebbe Road, Nakasero Market stands as one of the city’s largest and most vibrant trading centers.

The Kasubi Royal Tombs:

The Kasubi Tombs , a UNESCO-listed site, serve as the hallowed resting place for four kabakas (kings) and other members of the Baganda royal family. Beyond its significance as a burial ground, this site remains a spiritual and political sanctuary for the Ganda people, exemplifying traditional architectural splendor.

The Bahai Temple – A Unique Spiritual Oasis:

The Bahai Mother Temple of Africa , also known as the Mashriqu’l-Adhkar, graces the landscape of Kampala, nestled approximately three kilometers from the city center. As the only Bahá’í temple on the continent and one of only nine worldwide, it carries a unique legacy. English and Iranian Bahá’í followers arrived in Uganda in 1951, with over 100 followers by 1952. By 1953, these pioneers began spreading the Bahá’í faith throughout Africa, laying the foundation for the Mother Temple of Africa. The Bahá’í Intercontinental Conference for Africa was even held in Kampala, commemorating this momentous occasion.

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine:

Approximately 15 kilometers east of Kampala lies the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine , an evocative site where more than 20 Catholic and Anglican martyrs met their tragic fate in June 1886. These martyrs, burned alive on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga, now draw Christians from across the globe who pilgrimage to Namugongo every June 3rd to pay homage and renew their faith. The shrine features a church designed in the shape of a traditional Baganda hut (akasiisiira), standing atop 22 copper pillars representing the 22 Catholic martyrs. Pope Paul VI consecrated the church on August 2nd, 1969, in a poignant ceremony.

Parliament of Uganda – A Glimpse of Governance:

The Parliament of Uganda opens its doors to the public, offering a fascinating opportunity to tour this impressive edifice or observe parliamentary proceedings from Tuesday to Thursday between 2 and 4 pm. Visitors are encouraged to dress decently, carry a valid identification card, and seek permission from the Public Relations Department to arrange a visit to Uganda’s Parliament building.

Buganda Royal Tombs at Kasubi:

The Kasubi Royal Tombs serve as the final resting place for the kings and royal family members of the Buganda Kingdom. Recognized and listed by UNESCO for its significance to the kingdom, a visit to the Kasubi Tombs unveils an architectural masterpiece. The site boasts an impressive grass-thatched hut, initially constructed for Kabaka Mutesa I as a palace in 1882, later repurposed as a burial site following his passing two years later.

The Uganda Museum – A Glimpse into Uganda’s Past:

Established in 1908, the Uganda Museum holds the distinction of being the oldest museum in East Africa. This historical treasure trove showcases Uganda’s cultural heritage, featuring ethnological and natural historical exhibitions that offer vivid insights into the nation’s colorful history. Additionally, the museum boasts a collection of traditional musical instruments, inviting visitors to explore and even play these cherished artifacts.

Sampling Local Cuisine – Restaurants for Authentic Ugandan Flavors:

Kampala is a haven for food enthusiasts seeking authentic Ugandan cuisine. A variety of restaurants offer a unique and upscale dining experience, focusing on local flavors, fresh ingredients, and expert culinary craftsmanship. With dishes that are both unpretentious and delectable, these restaurants deliver a remarkable dining experience that is both delicious and visually appealing.

Wandegeya Market – A Lively Hub of Youthful Energy:

Located in the school district of Kampala, Wandegeya Market pulses with youthful vibrancy. This bustling marketplace hosts boutiques, salons, fresh produce stalls, and offices. It’s renowned for introducing the world to two iconic Ugandan street foods: the Rolex and TV Chicken. The Rolex is a beloved concoction of omelet, raw tomatoes, grilled chicken, fries, and assorted vegetables like cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, and green pepper. When in Wandegeya, a taste of the Rolex or TV Chicken is a must for any visitor.

Parliament of the Buganda Kingdom at Bulange Mengo:

Bulange, housing the administrative and parliamentary functions of the Buganda Kingdom , serves as a testament to Buganda’s rich history and culture. The building’s construction began in 1955, based on a drawing brought back by Ssekabaka Mutesa I after his exile in Scotland. Completed in 1958, Bulange provides a compelling backdrop for learning about Buganda’s heritage and traditions. Visitors are encouraged to respect the cultural norms of the Buganda people, including the dress code for women.

How to Make the Most of Your Kampala City Tour:

For an optimal experience of Kampala city and its rich offerings, it’s advisable to hire private transportation. Public transportation can be subject to traffic congestion and delays. Adventurous travelers may consider using Ugandan motorbike taxis called “Boda Bodas,” although this option comes with some degree of risk.

Safety Considerations for Touring Kampala:

Kampala is generally safe for daytime exploration. However, it’s advisable for travelers to exercise caution and avoid busy areas such as slums and heavily crowded business districts.

Duration of Your Kampala City Tour:

To thoroughly explore the diverse facets of Kampala, a full day is recommended. Navigating the city can sometimes be challenging due to traffic congestion, so allocating ample time ensures a comprehensive experience.
