Visa requirements.

China and India offer incredibly rich cultural and natural experiences. Here, we primarily provide references for first-time visitors to these two countries, covering the most iconic destinations and activities.

Top Things to Do in China

Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai are the top three cities for first-timers.

  • In Beijing, hike on the Great Wall, learn about the stories of the emperors in the palace where they once lived, and discover authentic Beijing food in the hutongs (imperial-era neighborhoods).
  • In Xi'an, visit China's first emperor's tomb and his burial pit with the Terracotta Army, and try to make a mini copy of a terracotta warrior to take home.
  • In Shanghai, travel through time as you stroll along Shanghai's Bund amid bustling skyscrapers and old colonial buildings.

Top Things to Do in India

Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur are the top three cities for first-timers.

  • In Delhi, visit India's biggest mosque, Jama Masjid, and take a rickshaw ride through the famous Chandni Chowk market to see Old Delhi's lifestyle.
  • In Agra, a visit to the Taj Mahal is a must. Then head to Agra Fort where you could see courtly buildings and get clear views of the Taj Mahal.
  • In Jaipur, learn about the secret of the Hawa Mahal (why it is called the 'Palace of Winds'). Enjoy a beautiful sunset view of the whole city from Nahargarh Fort.

How Many Days Are Needed?

A classic itinerary covering must-sees in China and India would need about 2 weeks , with 1 week devoted to each country. This duration allows for a well-paced journey and covers the most iconic cities in both countries.

Both China and India are vast and diverse, so if you have a longer vacation of 3 or 4 weeks, consider delving into regions with unique local characteristics, such as Tibet in China (for 1 week) or Rajasthan in India (for 1 week).

Nepal and India are also a popular combination. If you want to add a trip to Nepal, see our 20-Day China (including Tibet), Nepal, and India Tour .

Our tours are customizable and we would create an itinerary that aligns with your interests and available time.

A Classic 2-Week Itinerary

There is no big difference whether you fly to China or India first because there are many flight options for these two countries.

You could decide according to the most convenient flight times, ticket prices, and travel dates.

  • Days 1–3: Beijing (the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, hutongs, Peking duck...)
  • Days 4–6: Xi'an (the Terracotta Army, biking on Xi'an Ancient City Wall...)
  • Day 7: Shanghai (a walking tour of the Bund, Shanghai Tower, some free time...)
  • Day 8: Fly to India
  • Days 9–10: Delhi (ancient forts, mosques, markets...)
  • Days 11–12: Agra (the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort...)
  • Days 13–14: Jaipur (ancient forts, palaces, a cooking class...)

India is also famous for tiger safaris. If you are interested in one, you could spend one more day there to go on a safari in Ranthambore National Park, which is between Delhi and Agra.

You could also contact us to create an itinerary based on your available travel time, interests, and other requirements.

The estimated cost for a private trip to China and India is about 220–250 USD per person per day including flights/train journeys within China and India as well as transportation between China and India, 4- or 5-star hotels, lunches, attractions, guides, and private transport.

India also offers many luxury experiences, such as ultra-luxurious accommodation experiences, an elegant afternoon tea in a real palace, etc. If you want to have such a luxurious experience, it will cost more. See our 2-Week Luxury India Tour .

The price gap between the low and high seasons is not substantial. It's important to note that hotel prices could surge by 50% to 100% during certain major holidays, though, such as Christmas, India's Holi festival, and China's National Day holiday (the first week of October).

To enhance your choices, we suggest making reservations 3 months in advance.

When booking with us, you'll receive a 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights if you cancel up to 3 weeks before departure ( more details here⇒ ).

Best Times to Visit India and China

If you are looking for good weather, then autumn (September to November) is generally the best time to visit China or India.

If you want to experience the festive atmosphere, we recommend visiting during China's Spring Festival (late January or early February) or India's Holi festival (March).

The period around Christmas is also a good time as India enjoys pleasant and cool weather during this time. Northern China, including Beijing and Harbin, offers beautiful snowy landscapes, while southern regions, such as Yunnan and Hong Kong, have mild and sunny weather.

During the summer vacation (June to August), both countries experience their rainy seasons. Some outdoor activities may be affected, but there are plenty of indoor activities to complement your experience. For example, you could take a cooking class in Jaipur or try your hand at making miniature clay warriors in Xi'an.

Our itineraries are rich and flexible, and yours would be adjusted according to your needs and the weather conditions to ensure that your experience is least impacted by the weather.

Flying is the most recommended and popular way to travel between China and India . Currently, the shortest flight journeys are about 11 hours (Shanghai/Beijing–Delhi) with one stop (Hong Kong), due to there being no direct flights from China's mainland to India. Direct flights from Hong Kong to Delhi take about 6 hours.

Most European and American tourists need to apply for a visa to visit both China and India.

For India : For convenience, India offers an electronic visa, or e-visa , to citizens of many countries, such as the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. You could acquire it by filling out a straightforward online application form .

For China : You need to apply for a tourist visa (L visa). You could refer to the requirements for visa applications (for the USA) here .

Top 5 airlines flying to China

They ran out of food for breakfast They did not offer tea or coffee The staff appeared very inexperienced The cabin was very cold, even with a blanket

Crews were great but food not much selection just all tailored for Asian passengers.

Too many luggages for 1 passenger (4 bags) will make all the overhead luggage bins a challenge to fit them all. Some have oversized hand carry as in like back packer size bags shouldn’t be allowed as handcarry.

plus: service and personal assistance minus: online check-in did not work

The Premium economy class is not the same as some other airlines because there are no economy seats on these planes. Basically you’re getting an economy seat that’s a little wider. The seats are not that much more comfortable. The service and food experience is similar to economy class on other Asian airlines. There aren’t enough toilets for the entire plane therefore we are forced to share the business class toilets that are closed off with curtains.

Great to have actual hot tastey meal on a flight. Well done

Excellent meal served with real utensils, cardboard served hot meals instead of plastic utensils and plastic covers. Quick service, friendly and accommodating stewards.

All in all the flight was good. Love the fact that for airline food it was piping hot

I requested an aisle seat and got a middle seat The flight gate was changed and the flight was delayed

It was a great flight Food was great Crew was spectacular

Extra seat belt across the chest 10 minutes before taking off and 15 minutes before landing seemed excessively safe.

The transfer from Domestic and International was a bit confusing but I am easily confused. I did not eat any food, but the food on the other leg was decent. It was nice they turned the lights off on the night flight. The plane was in good shape, but was a little cramped in economy and I am small. They gave me a customs form to fill out and nobody looked at it as I went through customs. Not a bad flight.

My case was missing a wheel on arrival Heathrow and the staff were unhelpful when i tried to get some compensation stating it was not sufficient damage, i only wish that they at some point have to deal with the same situation it put me in, maybe they would change their attitude but overall it was a good flight

We are satisfied with the cabin crew serviceand the quality of meals served.

The aircraft was really old, the staff demotivated and the overall United airline service is horrible

Lunch Food was tasteful and had variety. Seat was comfortable. However, when I was reserving my seats during booking, the seat configuration showed was 3-3-3, but when I boarded it was a 2-4-2 configuration? Also during booking, I had also bought travel insurance together with my TG booking. However there was no confirmation of my purchase from Allianz and TG. After several emails with TG contact, sales, reservation and Allianz was i able to confirm my insurance purchase. When the policy was issued, the birth dates of me and my wife were wrongly stated and I had to go through another round of emails with Allianz to get it corrected. Otherwise any claims would be void! It was indeed not a very good booking experience!

Increase the number of available films, including variety. All other aspects were great.

Check in was a disaster. 90 minutes and only 2 economy check in desks open. Had to rush to catch the flight.

I couldnt go on this flight and lost all my money over 1,000 UK Pounds as my visa to Myanmar was not accepted :(

Thai Airways is one of the best airlines in the business. Looking forward to fly again with them.

I booked Flexi ticket, Paid extra for extra legroom seat. What I got was worst ever place to sit. It was an emergency exit seat with lots of legroom but half of the seat was occupied with aircraft body. Means you don’t keep that seat where a passenger can’t sit. The seats are too narrow. Whole night I was awake. Not movable armrests. One of the worst.

There is very little in the title" Premium" in the Economy experience with Cathay, Melbourne to Hong Kong. The seats are uncomfortable and the cabin with outdated 1990's decor and trim. The food service was sloppy and the leg room providing little to no advantage over regular economy seating. Infact, the Sunday flight was not fill occupancy and I would have done better saving the significant additional costs for the PREMIUM ticket and taken advantage of the seating. If you are a regular premium economy traveler of EMIRATES expecting the same experience on CATHAY, you will be disappointed. Emirates far superior.

My biggest complaint is the comfort and no good movies to choose from. My headphones didn't work either. 😔

Great, the flight attendants were very friendly and the food was also good.

The first economy rows have remote space in the seat which eats in the seating space. The seats are also smaller compared to other airlines.

Very comfortable Prem economy seats for a long haul flight. Had a problem with the tv that the crew fixed so was great!

Not good. Flight was purchased for my father who needed medical assistance to board and transfer due to a heart condition. No one at Hong Kong from Cathay was there to assist and he barely made the connection. When I talked to him he could barely breath and was not sure he was going to make it. Really poor service even though the ticket stated he needed a wheelchair assistance.

Very poor check-in experience, and flight meal service was very disappointing with no drinks service or hot meal.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

Seats were very comfortable. Crew were excellent. Food very good.

The plane had a technical problem it would delayed 10 hours but they just gave limited information and put all passengers into the Miracle lounge. Ther were not enough chairs and so on.

Ensure there is a choice of food for all customers and also enough food

An excellent airline; polite and courteous cabin crew, excellent meal and drink service. Highly recommended.

We boarded the plane at 1:20 pm It was hot. There was no air-conditioning It was stifling They kept us on the plane sitting there for 1 hour and 10 minutes

No space in between the seats as per them the average height of human is 5’3” and weight as 55, so seats are designed as per the same. Also, the aircraft was dirty and full of insects

when we arrived at Taipei no one help us to get boarding pass. we saw a few people there asked them for help but they just ignored us. There was a guy told us to call Starlux number to get help but we don’t know how to dial the number until there was a lady working there helped us to call Starlux customer then someone came down took us to another counter for boarding pass. Very confused and inconvenient. We might not choose Starlux again in the future.

There was no entertainment and food option limited But the service was first class on an economy flight

They didn't have a vegetarian food in spite of the ore order

Technical problems checking in. Had to wait a long time while they got things ready.

Vietnam airlines is just one step upper to the cheapest one (vietjet, if you wanted delays and cancel or feel like a criminal then vietjet is for you) for sure better customer cares and on time.

The IFE is quite unconvenient if using our own device. Not all passenger brought their own earphone/headphone.

Ok, but legspace on MH0127 from Kul to Per was too small. It was not possible to tilt my seat which I don't understand because the seat in front of my could do it. So I didn't rest on the flight. Also, the crew was probably understaffed because it took very long time to take trash after the meal. Everything very different from the flight with Malaysian Airlines from London to KL.

Service / food has to be much better. Staff were not very attentive to requests. Requested for a second serve of coke and got a weird look back from the host! Was also told they don’t have extra water bottles when I requested for one before sleep! Dinner time food was very minimum and average.

An overnight Doha to KL. Great sleep, good service and tasty food in business class

chaos boarding. Crew in business class seemed short staffed and lacking in attention to details initially, but did improve during flight.

The cabin was quite noisy as there were lots of children travelling for the school holidays. Found the selection of movies limited.

Delayed, not enough information. Had to ask for refreshments, crew could have been more proactive

The best so far coz this time it was all male steward on the economy cluster. They were polite, efficient & genuinely courteous. They do not judge you when you ask for more food & peanuts.

Delayed for 45 minutes. Don't know what's the issue. Other than that, food was not to my satisfaction. However it's okay.

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.
