How Showaddywaddy Formed

The band were formed in 1973 by amalgamating two bands who both played at the same pub in Leicester. Both bands had similar tastes in music. This is why Showaddywaddy uniquely has 2 vocalists, 2 drummers, 2 guitarists and 2 bassists.

The band consisted of Dave Bartram (born 23 March 1952, Leicester) and Buddy Gask (born William George Gask, 18 December 1945, Leicester) on vocals.

Russ Field (born James Lewis Russell Field, 1 September 1949, Berwick-upon-Tweed) and Trevor Oakes (born Trevor Leslie Oakes, 9 September 1946, Leicester) on guitars.

Romeo Challenger (born 19 May 1950) and Malcolm Allured (born 27 August 1945, Leicester)   on drums.

Their first single released in 1974 was called ‘Hey Rock and Roll’ (a song written by the band) and reached number two in the UK charts. They went on to have great success covering old 50s and 60s songs like ‘Three Steps To Heaven’, Heartbeat, ‘ Under The Moon Of Love ‘ (previously done by Curtis Lee in the 60s) the band’s only number one song.

Dressed up as Teddy Boys in 1973, two groups, Choise and Golden Hammers brought together their bands to form the super-group Showaddywaddy. Because it was an amalgamation of the two groups, they had two sets of everything, from vocalists to drummers, and together they would play original songs, as well as re-worked covers of songs from the 50s and 60s.

When watching their live shows, you witness a very unique set. Before they even take the stage, you can see from all the instruments on stage, that it is going to be a very crowded stage, but once they take the stage and pick up their instruments it’s not as big as you thought it would be. Having two vocalists, your ears are constantly engaged, and on top of that the large band gives off a sound that completely surrounds you. Because the group has been around for so long, the crowd is a bit older, but if you are of my generation, you still recognize a large chunk of the songs they perform. Most of them are really upbeat and a lot of people will get up and dance, because you can’t seem to fight off the urge to move to the music.

Let's go for a little walk

Under the moon of love

Showaddywaddy: Rock & Roll Titans

Hailing from the musical haven of Leicester, England, Showaddywaddy are nothing short of rock and roll legends. Their impeccable craft in rejuvenating timeless hits from the golden era of the 1950s and 60s sets them in the same elite echelon as the likes of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Waiting for Riki. Not only did they revive classics, but their arsenal also contains breathtaking original compositions. Their monumental achievement of 209 weeks on the UK Singles Chart speaks for itself, with an awe-inspiring 10 Top Ten singles, and one unparalleled anthem reaching the coveted number one spot.

1973 was the year the musical cosmos aligned perfectly. Two incredible forces, Choise and the Golden Hammers (often revered as ‘The Hammers’), united under the majestic banner of Showaddywaddy. These groups found a harmonic synergy at the Fosse Way pub in Leicester, eventually fusing into a supergroup. This birthed an eight-member juggernaut band, uniquely armed with two powerful vocalists, two dynamic drummers, two masterful guitarists, and two rhythmic bassists. Their electrifying debut at the Dreamland Ballroom, Margate, in September 1973, is still whispered in musical legends.

Triumph followed them wherever they went. Showaddywaddy’s dazzling victory on the ATV series “New Faces” in 1973 is testament to their unparalleled talent. With close to 300 television appearances, including a highly celebrated BBC TV special, the “Showaddywaddyshow,” in 1980, their star only shone brighter. Let’s not forget their iconic performance in the 1975 film “Three for All,” showcasing their magical 1974 debut album.

Their maiden anthem, “Hey Rock and Roll,” resonated deeply with fans, storming to number two on the UK Singles Chart. Their self-produced tracks post the “Dancin’ Party” era in 1977, are testament to their genius, breathing new life into classics. After that, their dominion over the charts was undeniable, with 22 more UK hits. Their dedication culminated in the soulful “Under the Moon of Love” in 1976, not only topping charts but touching the hearts of nearly a million people.

Their undeniable ability to transform legendary 50s and 60s hits into something uniquely Showaddywaddy has forever etched them into the hall of fame, alongside iconic tracks by Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Curtis Lee, the Kalin Twins, Marv Johnson, and Chubby Checker. Their legacy is further amplified with hits like “Three Steps to Heaven” and “Under the Moon of Love” resonating globally, even lighting up the South African charts.

In the grand tapestry of rock and roll, Showaddywaddy shines as brightly as the northern star, their legacy parallel to the greatest bands the world has ever known.
