15 Best Places to Visit in Sierra Leone

After more than a decade of civil war – one of the most brutal and destructive that West Africa has ever seen – and an unexpected outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, Sierra Leone is working hard to get back on track. The efforts are going well, too. Gone are the days of rebel and government divisions. Supporters of the onetime coups and counter-coups are now re-integrated back into society; hardly anyone even mentions the troubles of the 90s.

The country is open for business again! But where to go? Will you choose the salt-sprayed beaches of the Western Region, where palm trees bow to the Atlantic Ocean and old colonial fortresses crumble on the clifftops? Or will you head inland, to where chimps roam the Guinean forests, and colobus monkeys tread the undergrowth of the savannah woods.

Lets explore the best places to visit in Sierra Leone :

1. Freetown

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Cascading down the green hills of the Western Area, right to the edge of its own horseshoe bay, the capital of Freetown is a fine place to begin your travels in the country.

A cocktail of frantic port activity (the city is home to one of the largest natural deep-water harbors on the globe) and laid-back beachside living, it’s something of Sierra Leone writ small.

You’ll see what we mean as you move between the powdery sands of Lakka Beach and Lumley, into the party strip of Aberdeen district, and out to the industrial sprawl of the suburbs.

Oh, and don’t miss the amazing Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where mind-boggling primates will swing above your 4X4!

2. Bunce Island

Bunce Island

Deep in the recesses of Tagrin Bay, just a short ferry ride from the jetties of the capital at Freetown, the rock that is Bunce Island offers a glimpse into the darker days of West African history.

Just one of 40 individual citadels that were raised by the Europeans along the shoreline of the region during the heyday of the slave trade, the spot is known to have been one of the primary points where British vessels laden with captured people departed for the colonies of South Carolina and Georgia across the Atlantic.

Today, visitors can come and see the preserved castile, and learn all about this sobering episode of Sierra Leone’s past.

3. Banana Island

Banana Island

Languishing off the coast of the Western Area, south from the capital at Freetown, the finger of land that forms Banana Island has all the shimmering, alabaster-hued beaches and lush rainforest you’d expect of a place so deep in the tropics.

In fact, that cocktail of beautiful natural draws has made this one arguably the most popular weekend getaway from the big city, and there are now some good guesthouses in hotels in the fishing settlements of Dublin and Ricketts as a result.

You can also head inland, and seek out the vine-clambered ruins of old colonial depots and slave processing centers.

4. Tiwai Island

Tiwai Island

Engulfed by the weaving, winding capillaries of the Moa River as the main channel splits in two in the heart of Sierra Leon’s Southern Province, Tiwai Island remains one of the most famous conservation spots in the country.

A rare draw away from the coast, the riparian land is home to some of the last remaining virgin rainforest in Sierra Leone.

And the wildlife is equally as totemic, with Diana monkeys and pygmy hippos, tool-using chimpanzees (a truly awesome feat) and curious pangolins all making the reserve their home.

5. Turtle Islands

Turtle Islands

The Turtle Islands might just be the most picture-perfect tropical paradise you’ve never heard of.

Set out in the lapping swells of the Atlantic Ocean, this archipelago of eight is made from a patchwork of swaying palm blooms and mangrove, carved out by gorgeous white-sand beaches and empty bays of water so blue you’ll need to pinch yourself to believe it.

Add to that a truly rustic set of locals and ramshackle bamboo-built villages, bobbing fishing skiffs and campsites right on the shore, and it’s easy to see why the Turtle isles deserve a visit.

Just be sure to steer the boat away from Hoong, which is barred to visitors and used for coming-of-age religious rituals.

Tokeh

Bamboo parasols rustle in the Atlantic breezes; sands shimmer in gleaming yellow-golden hues; the salty whitecaps of the ocean buffet the palm-peppered shore: Welcome to Tokeh Beach – arguably the single most accomplished seaside resort in the entire of Sierra Leone.

Thanks to its gorgeous coastal stretches, this little town east of Freetown and in the heart of the Western Area Rural District has grown up with countless luxury hotels and guesthouses.

In fact, it’s been noted for its touristic potential since at least the 1960s, when one Shakib Basma built the first accommodations.

The civil war ravaged all that, but things are now in full swing again, and sunbathing on the sand is back on the menu!

7. Gola Forest Reserve

Gola Forest Reserve

As Sierra Leone’s last remaining swathe of Upper Guinean Tropical Rainforest, the Gola Reserve commands the attention of nature lovers and conservationists the world over.

It’s been on the international map since the 1920s, and has risen to particular fame thanks to its booming population of resident chimpanzees (the number stands at over 300 individuals in total!). However, the park also displays the rare biodiversity of old-growth woodland, with layer upon layer of organisms residing from the undergrowth to the canopy: colorful butterflies; galumphing forest elephants; pygmy hippos – the list goes on!

Bo Town

Officially just Bo, though affectionately and colloquially known as Bo Town, Sierra Leone’s second city sits deep in the Southern Province.

Down-to-earth and industrial by nature, the place is driven by diamond prospecting and mining.

However, there are some lively (thanks largely to the student crowds of the Njala University) spots to settle for a drink and a bite to eat, along with some great natural attractions on the edge of the city – not least of all the Kangari Hills Forest Reserve to the north.

Bo Town is connected with the capital by a long, paved road, and journeys here from the city on the coast take around four hours from start to finish.

9. Outamba Kilimi National Park

Outamba Kilimi National Park

If you’re eager to keep company with chimpanzees and swinging mangabeys, then there can really be no substitute for the vast reaches of the Outamba Kilimi National Park.

They sit in the extreme north of Sierra Leone, unfolding close to the border with the Republic of Guinea in a mosaic of savannah and woodland, groves of goomar teaks and hills that poke just above the canopies.

Ecotourism is the main draw, and today thousands of safari comers head here to see hippos in the muddy waters of the Kilimi River, elephants in the forests, bongo antelopes on the ridges, and even chimpanzees overhead!

Kenema

Away from the coast and deep in the middle of the Eastern Province, the country’s third-largest city can be found cascading down the ridges of the Kambui Hills to meet the winding courses of the Moa River.

Like many provincial hubs, Kenema has a colourful clock tower and lively medley of locals, who can often be seen purring on scooters over the dusty downtown streets, or roaring on the city’s duo of Sierra Leone National Premier League soccer sides: the Kamboi Eagles and Gem Stars.

The city is also the best gateway to the chimp and colobus monkey-spotted wilds of the South Kambui Hills Forest Reserve.

Makeni

Close to the geographical heart of Sierra Leone, the bustling, mercantile and industrial city of Makeni ticks over to the sounds of Krio chatter and cheers for the local Wusum Stars football team.

A lived-in place that’s not really got any standout attractions for the visitor, this provincial hub is a great town for getting a feel of what day to day life is like in this West African nation.

And there is an all-new clock tower in the works, lots of infrastructure investment in play, and easy access to the greater region of Bombali – the home of the aforementioned Outamba Kilimi National Park!

Lungi

Although best-known for the bustling international airport (the Freetown International Airport) that it hosts, Lungi is actually a magnet for travelers who are eager to be in the action, but don’t want to bed down right in the midst of frenetic Freetown.

Just a short drive north from the capital, the coastal stretch that runs to the south here is actually home to oodles of luxurious resort hotels.

And there are sun-kissed beaches too, offering a seemingly endless stretch of golden sand that’s ripe for beachcombing and people watching.

Kabala

At the very heart of one of Sierra Leone’s fertile breadbasket regions, and set high amidst the breezy tops of the north-eastern hills, the town of Kabala is a welcome break from the sun-scorched, dust-caked places of the country’s lowlands.

It’s also a pretty spot, peppered with low-rise bungalows and tin-roofed builds, imbued with lively local farmers’ markets and surrounded by bucolic swathes.

The main draws lie in the hinterland nearby though, where endless walking trails will take travelers through rural farming communities and up into the forest-dressed peaks of the Northern Province.

14. Sherbro Island

Sherbro Island

A large shard of land that fragments from Sierra Leone and points straight out into the Atlantic Ocean, Sherbro Island is cut-through by countless river channels and formed from sweeping vistas of wetland and swamp.

It’s a sleepy and rustic place, with just a smattering of small towns like Bonthe and pint-sized San, mainly inhabited by the indigenous Sherbro people – contented, bucolic and curiously westernized fishing types.

There’s a fascinating history to unravel here too – Sherbro Island went from British bastion of anti-slave trade enforcement to resettlement community for repatriated American slaves.

15. Kambui Hills Forest Reserve

Kambui Hills Forest Reserve

Located just on the edge of the aforementioned backwater town of Kenema, the Kambui Hills Forest Reserve might not be Sierra Leone’s most famous natural area, but it’s certainly got charms all of its own.

For starters, there’s the rare birdlife, which ranges from the white-necked rockfowl to the green-tailed bristlebill.

That avian biodiversity is mirrored on the ground too, where duikers and forest elephants tread their own paths through the forest.

And thanks to the proximity close to a regional city, trips here are relatively easy to organize!

Top 15 things to do in sierra leone + 7 day itinerary.

Top 15 Things to Do in Sierra Leone

I think it’s fair to say that Sierra Leone is not a popular travel destination, but that doesn’t mean there’s an amazing wealth of epic things to do here!

From cultural and historic sites, through to idyllic Atlantic beaches and epic wildlife spots, this off-the-beaten-track beauty offers more than enough to keep you entertained for at least 7 days.

In fact, I think that a week is the perfect time to explore this country and at the bottom of this article, I give you a suggested 7 day itinerary too.

And the perfect time to undertake this itinerary is during Sierra Leone’s dry season.

Running from December to February, this is the coolest and least humid time of the year to visit this country, not to mention the months with the least rain too.

And no need to worry about the crowds during high season, one of the least travelled countries I’ve been to, you won’t be fighting other tourists when it comes to exploring these top 15 things to do in Sierra Leone…

#1 Head to Freetown’s Museums

Sierra Leone, Freetown, Masks

I’m kicking off this list of the best things to do in Sierra Leone in the country’s capital – Freetown.

After all, this is where most travellers are likely to begin their journey, given the country’s only international airport is located just beyond the city.

After your arrival, I definitely recommend spending a day or 2 in Freetown, not only to get acquainted with this West African country (especially if it’s your first visit to the region), but also because there’s some great cultural and historical sights to see here.

The famous Cotton Tree and Peace and Cultural Monument are certainly worth a look in, as is St Georges Church, the Central Mosque and the Big Market (great for souvenirs), but top of my list in the capital are the museums.

The National Museum is a good place to start to learn more about the 18 ethnic communities that form the majority of Sierra Leone’s population, as well as the country’s history and development.

There’s 2 main parts to the museum and taking a guide to show you around is a good idea as the signage is pretty scant!

After that, don’t miss the National Railway Museum, where enthusiastic staff will share the tale of the railway’s peak in Sierra Leone, as well as its sad demise.

See the train carriage designed for Queen Elizabeth II when she visited this Commonwealth nation in 1952.

#2 Savour an Aberdeen Sundowner

Sierra Leone, Freetown, Beach

And after all that city sightseeing (which, let’s face it, is usually a rather sweaty affair in this part of the world!), it’s time to relax with an evening drink.

And there’s no better place to do just that in Freetown than along the beachfront promenade in Aberdeen.

One of the most well-heeled districts in the city, and the area where you’ll find most hotels and tourist services, Aberdeen is situated right along the Atlantic coastline, which means it offers some gorgeous coastal sunsets.

And the perfect place to take one in is from one of the beachside bars.

There’s tons to choose from here, but personally, I’m a  huge fan of Roy’s. It offers a great mix of tourists, locals and expats in a friendly and safe atmosphere. It’s well-priced and has good food too.

What’s not to love?!

And if you’re looking for somewhere to stay nearby in Aberdeen, then check out this guide I wrote to the best Freetown hotels .

#3 Relax at Tokeh Beach

Sierra Leone, Tokeh Beach, Loungers & Sunshades

This top thing to do in Sierra Leone actually makes for the perfect end to your trip here, but I’ve included it in at number 3, because it’s situated just down the road from Freetown.

Less than an hour’s drive away from the capital and you’ll find yourself at the country’s most stunning beach in my opinion.

Palm tree-fringed white sandy days, lapped gently by the Atlantic waves, are what life is all about in this peaceful spot and, if you’re anything near as much of a beach lover as am I, then this one is a must!

The perfect place to take in all the beauty of this gorgeous sandy strip is Token Beach Resort.

Head for an amazing lunch, or why not treat yourself and spend a night or two?

That way you get to enjoy an amazing sunset from the onsite restaurant and a few delicious cocktails from the bar here too.

If I had to choose a holiday highlight from this list of great things to do in Freetown, this would probably be it!

#4 Eat Amazing Seafood

And another epic holiday treat you can indulge in at the Tokeh Beach Resort, as well as pretty much anywhere along the coast of this country, is eat amazing seafood.

Caught fresh daily and plucked from the nearby Atlantic just hours before ending up on your plate, you’ll probably never have such delicious and affordable lobster, crabs, shrimp, snapper or sole in your life!

To be totally transparent, I actually don’t eat fish (shout out to my fellow veggies), but my co-travellers in Sierra Leone were mad for it and told me it was some of the best they’ve ever eaten.

Best to take their word for it!

#5 Stroll to No 2 Beach

Sierra Leone, River & Beach, No 2

And another place you can enjoy great seafood and relax at the coast – even on a half day trip from Freetown – is No 2 Beach.

It’s also possible to reach this lovely enclave on foot from Tokeh Beach.

Just a half an hour walk along the sand and then a quick boat ride across the No 2 River Estuary, and you can reach No 2 Beach for lunch from Tokeh.

Run by the local community here, the cafes, accommodation and markets at No 2 are part of a sustainable tourism development and a trip here is a great way to support this super local initiative.

It’s also a gorgeous sandy spot – one which locals flock to at the weekend to enjoy a good time.

#6 Learn About the Significance of Bunce Island

Sierra Leone, Bunce Island, Fort Ruins

But now it’s time to head off the mainland and away to some of the islands that scatter the Freetown peninsula on this list of the best things to do in Sierra Leone.

If you’re looking for a historic site that tells an important part of this country’s story, Bunce Island makes for a great half day trip from Freetown.

Or you can combine it with nearby Tasso Island for a great full day trip.

A former slave colony, Bunce Island is home to one of the most significant slave fortresses in West Africa.

Now lying in ruins, it’s nevertheless still deeply moving and poignant to visit.

An organised tour with a guide is the best way to really get to grips with the history of this place, as well as to understand the role colonialism, as well as slavery, had and has on Sierra Leone.

Learn more in this visitor guide to Bunce Island .

#7 Chill Out on Banana Island

Sierra Leone, Banana Island, Family

And another great island that lies off the coast of the Freetown Peninsula is Banana Island.

Actually an archipelago of 3 islands, the largest is Dublin, which is where most of the tourist services are.

And by tourist services I mean some simple accommodation options, a tiny village and a beach where simple boats that bring you to the island pull up!

But trust me, this place really is an amazing off-grid spot just waiting to be discovered.

Snorkelling, diving and kayaking are all on offer from some of the coastal accommodation options here and, of course, there’s delicious fish to eat and beaches to enjoy!

Learn more in this guide I wrote to visiting Banana Island .

#8 Visit York & the Boma Gardens Project

Sierra Leone, York, Boma Gardens

To get to Banana Island, you usually have to take a boat from a town called Kent.

Yes – there’s a lot of hangovers from the British colonial rule here.

And another place close to Kent, in Sierra Leone terms, is York.

York’s layout and architecture are reminiscent of those in the southern states of the US States – a testament to the early settlers who began a new life here in the 19th century.

During World War II, Sierra Leone’s royal family were stationed in the community and the “King Yard” is still here.

And not far from York is a great community project that’s well worth a visit.

Boma Garden run music and dance workshops with local children and visiting this project to see the amazing work being done and support this initiative is sure to be one of the most rewarding this to do in Sierra Leone.

Learn more via Boma Garden’s Facebook page here .

#9 Surf at Bureh Beach

Sierra Leone, Bureh Beach, Yoga

And not far from York and the Boma Garden project is the great backpacker hang-out spot of Bureh Beach.

Another of Sierra Leone’s top beaches , this gorgeous sandy spot has some simple lodgings with local beachside restaurants.

Those on long West African overland journeys often stop here and chill out for a few days learning to surf and enjoying yoga classes amidst the beautiful surroundings.

#10 See Pygmy Hippos at Tiwai Island

Sierra Leone, Tiwai Island, Boat Ride

But if it’s wildlife you want to spot in Sierra Leone, then one place you have to head for is Tiwai Island.

It’s best to take a tour to get here, as this will include your transport to the islands around the Tiwai Wildlife Sanctuary.

As no one on Tiwai itself, except a small research team, it’s in nearby mainland villages that you’ll find accommodation (mostly camping) and food options.

You can then take a boat to the island to explore the amazing scenery here and to hopefully spot the unique pygmy hippos that call this place home!

Hiking is also available on the island, with the chance to spot a ton of amazing butterflies, monkeys and birds (including hornbills that sound like helicopters!), as well as to admire the lush tropical landscape.

#11 Explore Gola Rainforest National Park

Sierra Leone, Gola NP, Hike

And located close to Tiwai Island is the fantastic Gola Rainforest National Park – another must see place in Sierra Leone.

If you missed the pygmy hippos in Tiwai, Gola provides your second chance to see them, as well as spot Colobus monkeys, birds (including the rare picathartes), reptiles and creepy crawlies.

Staying with locals in simple accommodation within the park is the only option here, but it’s a real adventure for those who aren’t scared to rough it a little.

You can also enjoy simple local food cooked by the community and enjoy the cultural experiences they showcase too.

#12 Check out Our Closest Relative at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Sierra Leone, Tacugama Sanctuary, Male Chimp

And if it’s more wildlife you’re after, or you want to experience a bit more comfort during your time in this country, one of the top things to do in Sierra Leone is to visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Located just outside of Freetown, again this is a perfect half day excursion from the capital.

Time your visit to coincide with one of the daily tours, when you’ll be led by an experienced staff member around this rehabilitation project to learn more about the chimps, their lives and behaviours and to get to see them pretty close as well.

An amazing experience, visiting Tacugama is a great way to support this important conservation trust and the work they do to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned and abused chimps.

You can even stay onsite to enjoy hikes and bird watching experiences too if you want to extend your time here.

On the way to Tacugama, don’t miss the epic Leicester Peak lookout which gives amazing views over the whole of Freetown.

Learn more about visiting the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in this post I wrote all about it.

#13 Spot Elepants in Outamba-Kilimi National Park

And back to the national parks we go on this list of the top things to do in Sierra Leone, because if you’re keen to explore further inland in this country, the Outamba-Kilimi National Park shouldn’t be missed.

One of the country’s top safari spots, and the first national park in Sierra Leone, you can again see monkeys (10 species including chimpanzees), hippos, birds and even potentially elephants in this epic spot.

Sadly the elephant numbers are in decline due to illegal hunting, but there is now an ongoing project to try and eradicate poaching and logging here.

Enjoy a safari along the river here, camp under the stars and relish visiting a place few visitors get to.

#14 Climb a Mountain

And if it’s off the beaten track you want (which in a country like Sierra Leone says quite a lot!), then the perfect thing to do is climb one of this country’s mountains.

A great option is Pickett Hills, which can be enjoyed as a day trip from Freetown.

A 7 hour return, this hike offers amazing views of the whole peninsula.

Alternatively, the Kangari Hills is another option from Freetown.

An 8 hour drive from the capital, this is an overnight trip, where camping is available on the mountain to help you enjoy it for longer

Another option is the Walla Walla Mountain near the town of Kabala.

This 1.5 hour return hike offers lovely views of the town and the high agricultural landscape of the surrounding altitude area.

And finally, Bintumani Mountain, also known as Loma Mountain, is the highest mountain in West Africa.

This 2 day hike involves an overnight camp on the side of the mountain (where it gets seriously cold btw!) and lots of scrabbling as well as steep inclines, so is not for the faint-hearted!

Only suitable for experienced, fit and healthy hikers, buffalo can sometimes be spotted on the ascent here.

#15 Discover the Turtle Islands

Sierra Leone, Turtle Islands, Bush

And finally, we come to Sierra Leone’s remote paradise –  the Turtle Islands.

A 4 hour speedboat from Freetown, you need a longer trip to really justify the trip out here, but take the plunge and you’ll be rewarded with amazing tropical islands, largely untouched by tourism.

You can also access these islands from Banana Island, but be aware you’ll have to take everything with you, including camping gear, water and food.

There’s no electricity and no running water, but brave this gorgeous place and you’ll have an amazing time with warm locals and fabulous nights sleeping under the stars.

Mini Travel Guide to Sierra Leone

West Africa, Sierra Leone, Beach

How Long to Visit For?

1 week is a good amount of time to see a lot that Sierra Leone has to offer, including Freetown, the surrounding beaches and islands, plus some of the nearby wildlife destinations too, such as Tiwai Island.

When to Visit?

The best time to visit Sierra Leone is between December and February.

Check out this full guide I wrote to this country’s weather and climate.

How to Get There?

Most travellers arrive into Sierra Leone via the capital’s international airport.

Flights from Europe are direct with Brussels Airways and Air France, or via Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc.

Kenya Airways and Turkish Airlines also operate flights here from other destinations.

As always I use Skyscanner to find the best prices.

To get from the airport to central Freetown, it’s then best to take the ferry service, which is timed to run with arriving flights.

Sea Bird Express are the main operator and tickets cost $45 USD.

The ticket office is located outside the airport, just across the street from the arrivals hall.

Learn more in this post I wrote all about arriving into Sierra Leone’s airport.

How to Get Around?

It’s best to get around Sierra Leone care of a tour company or an arranged driver.

Visit Sierra Leone can help with both, including visits to explore Freetown and trips to Banana Island.

Travel Insurance for Sierra Leone

Travel Money in Sierra Leone

Cash is king in Sierra Leone, so I advise bringing lots of USD, Euros or Pound Sterling with you, which can then be exchanged in banks or on the street in Freetown.

Don’t rely on ATMs, even in the capital, as many don’t work and cash withdrawals are limited.

Paying by card in this country is really only available in top-end hotels, restaurants and bars.

On the occasion that you can pay by card (and as a good backup option generally when you travel), I highly recommend a Wise card.

The easy way to spend abroad with real exchange rates and no sneaky transaction fees, I never go anywhere without mine these days. Sign up to get yours here .

Travel Health

You need a Yellow Fever certificate, as well as a Covid-19 vaccination certificate to be granted entry to Sierra Leone.

Bring paper copies of both to show officials at your point of entry.

Always consult a health practitioner before you travel to West Africa. They will advise you about other recommended vaccinations to get ahead of your trip, as well as about any anti-malaria medication you may need.

Where to Travel After Sierra Leone?

After Sierra Leone, I travelled north to Senegal.

The Northwest Province extends to the border with Guinea. The largest city is Port Loko, and the main activities are farming, fishing and mining.

The Southern Province has stunning beaches, historical landmarks, and great opportunities for wildlife-watching in Tiwai Island. The lively city of Bo, the second largest city in the country, is its capital.

The Western Area includes the capital Freetown, and it is the economic and political center of Sierra Leone.

The Eastern Province is home to the Gola Rainforest and Loma Mountains, and it’s the center of the diamond mining industry in the country. The provincial capital is Kenema, worth visiting for its colorful markets.

Rivers & Mountains

Rainforests, food & festivals.

Sierra Leone is a secular country, with no official religion. However, most inhabitants follow a faith, with Islam and Christianity as the two most commonly practiced.

Approximately 78% of the population is Muslim (mostly Sunni), while around 20% is Christian, (mainly Protestant), with the remaining percentage practising traditional African beliefs or other faiths. Islam is most prevalent in the northern and eastern regions of the country, while Christianity is more common in the western and southern regions.

Despite religious differences, Sierra Leoneans generally coexist peacefully, and religious tolerance is a core value in Sierra Leonean society. Interfaith marriages are common, and religious celebrations and festivals are often observed by people of different faiths. Both Christian and Muslim festivities are official holidays in the country.

Traditional beliefs and customs also play a significant role in Sierra Leonean culture, particularly in rural areas, where rituals and ceremonies are an integral part of community life.

Things to do in Sierra Leone: top tourist attractions

27/02/2023 by Roobens Leave a Comment

I spent about a week in Sierra Leone thanks to the Sierra Leone tourism board . They invited four travel bloggers to discover and explore the country. Needless to say, all opinions are my own.

Sierra Leone is one of the best kept secrets of West Africa. It’s not the most visited country in the world because it suffers from a bad reputation due to the civil war during 1991 and 2002 and the Ebola epidemic around 2015. However, Sierra Leone is a safe country now with an interesting history, numerous places to visit and stunning beaches. In other words, you can’t be bored, there are many things to do in Sierra Leone!

street freetown

Sierra Leone is one of the very few English-speaking countries in West Africa. Its idyllic islands, welcoming locals and gorgeous flora and fauna makes it a great destination in the area. You’ll be able to fully immerse in the local culture. For your information, Sierra Leone means Lion Mountain in Portuguese. Let’s see now what are the top Sierra Leone tourist attractions!

sunset freetown

Table of Contents

Bunce Island

You can’t visit Sierra Leone and not go to Bunce Island. It used to be one of the main slave points in West Africa, but it was kind of a secret island. The Brits took over in 1670 and started the Royal African Company of England. Sierra Leone was a focal point because it was easy to navigate from there.

bunce island fortress

Tens of thousands of slaves were sent to North America (mostly in South Carolina and Georgia) and the Caribbean islands. The UK abolished slavery in 1808 and abandoned the island, which is why it looks a bit derelict. Moreover no one lives there, it’s now owned by the government.

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

At the outskirts of Freetown you’ll find the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. It opened in November 1995 and to make it clear, it’s not a zoo. The sanctuary provides a safe environment to chimpanzees, because the local population often hunts them for food or keeps them as pets when they’re young but abandon them later when they grow up.

tacugama chimpanzee sanctuary

115 chimpanzees live in the sanctuary. Each one of them has its own name and responds to it. The staff runs various hikes and guided tours twice a day, where you can observe the chimpanzees in their environment. The sanctuary also developed educational programs focusing on sustainability and ecotourism. If you love the place, you can even stay in a tree house onsite to stay there for a few days. FYI, the chimpanzee is kind of the symbol animal of Sierra Leone.

tacugama chimpanzee sanctuary

Banana Islands

Banana Islands is comprised of 3 islands: Dublin, Ricketts and Mes-Meheux (this one is uninhabited). You’ll have to get on a boat from Kent village to Dublin, the largest of the three. About 800 people live there. You basically go there to relax, enjoy the scenery and savor the delicious freshly caught seafood for lunch or dinner. We stayed at Bafa Resort and had a great time there. Cool staff, great food and comfortable and spacious tents.

banana island sierra leone

Cotton Tree

The Cotton Tree is the national symbol of Sierra Leone. It’s one of the most important landmarks in Freetown. This is where people often arrange to meet. This tree has been here for about 500 years now, and this is where former slaves returning from Nova Scotia would pray to start a new life as free people. Even today, locals go there to pray and express their homage to their ancestors.

cotton tree freetown sierra leone

Sierra Leone National Museum

It opened in 1957. It’s very close to the Cotton Tree. It’s not large but it’s very interesting. A guide will show you around, giving clear explanations and sharing stories about the history of Sierra Leone while you’re watching the pieces of art, photos, documents and tribal clothing. You’ll learn about the culture and tribes of the country, but also about important historical figures such as Bai Bureh who fought against the British and their hut tax war.

sierra leone national museum

Sierra Leone Peace and cultural Monument

In the same area, you’ll find the Sierra Leone Peace and cultural monument. It opened in 2011 in memory of those who died during the civil war, and also to preserve the truth of Sierra Leone’s history. It’s very interesting, you’ll see paintings on the wall representing events that happened during the history of Sierra Leone. You learn more about historical figures of the country such as Madam Yoko or Sengbeh Pieh.

Enjoy the food

Sierra Leone is not known for its gastronomy, however the food is good there! You have to try a cassava leaf, that’s the national dish. Basically it’s steamed rice with sauce and fish or chicken. Groundnut stew is a chicken or beef stew in thick peanut sauce. Since there’s a large Lebanese community in Freetown, you can easily find hummus and pita bread but also falafel, shawarma, etc. You’ll notice rice and plantains accompany most meals.

cassava leaf sierra leone

Lumley Beach

This is one of the numerous beaches you have to see in Sierra Leone. This one is in Freetown, many locals and tourists hang out there. It’s home to numerous bars, restaurants, hotels and also nightclubs. It’s relatively quiet on weekdays but it gets busy on weekends and public holidays. Roy’s is a popular spot to watch the sunset while have a drink or dinner.

National Railway Museum

The National Railway Museum is in Freetown and it opened in March 2005. It was founded by Colonel Steve Davies. It’s dedicated to the history and works of the Sierra Leone Government Railway, but the last train ran in 1975 in Sierra Leone. They want them back now to help develop the country, plus neighboring countries like Guinea have running trains.

national railway museum sierra leone

The museum houses several locomotives that survived the civil war thanks to the efforts of the late Mohamed Bangura, and also old tickets, photographs, maps and timetables. It even exhibits a coach specially made for the 1961 visit of Queen Elizabeth II.

Fourah Bay College

Fourah Bay College is the first and oldest university in West Africa. It opened in 1827 and it was an eminent educational institution that was called “Athens of West Africa”. The building stopped being used in 1990 and caught fire in 1999 during the civil war. Today, various plants claimed it back but it’s still a fascinating place to visit.

fourah bay college sierra leone

Tokeh is a long sandy beach home to great resorts, especially Tokeh Beach Resort (I spent a night there and loved it!). Just sit back, relax, sip cocktails, sunbathe and take a dip. A nice beach to decompress after spending a few days in the hustle and bustle of Freetown.

tokeh beach sierra leone

River Number 2 Beach

This one is like 20 minutes away by foot from Tokeh, on the other side of the lagoon. Tokeh has more a Western feel to it, but River Number 2 is where the locals head to on weekends and holidays to party. It’s run by the local community. You’ll find some bars, restaurants, a guesthouse and a tourism market. This beach offers white sands and clean amenities such as red and blue beach chairs.

river number 2 beach sierra leone

Tasso Island

Head to Tasso Island to enjoy a delicious lunch in front of the sea at Tasso Resort. And guess what? You can even stay in a chalet onsite, a great getaway accommodation. Don’t want to laze around? Take part in an activity such as going on a canoe trip or watching a masquerade dance.

tasso island sierra leone

Bureh Beach

Bureh Beach is the surf spot in Sierra Leone. There’s a surf club if you’re into it or if you want to make friends, or you can just enjoy the laid-back vibe of the beach and enjoy the sound of the waves. It’s home to some guesthouses if you want to mingle with other travelers.

bureh beach sierra leone

Leicester Peak

It’s the highest peak in Freetown, about 800 meters (2600ft.) above sea level in Tower Hill. Perfect place to enjoy panoramic views from the heights of the city. Tourists and locals love going there especially to admire the sunset.

St. George’s cathedral

This is a historical church in Freetown. It was built between 1817 and 1828 to commemorate sailors lost at sea. It’s one of the largest and oldest churches of Sierra Leone. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philipp came here in 1961. They signed the guest book and to this day you can see their signatures.

Other things to do in Sierra Leone

As I said, you can’t be bored in Sierra Leone. Head to Outamba-Kilimi National Park to see animals such as hippos and elephants, or Gola Rainforest National Park to see reptiles and other animals. Tiwai Wildlife Sanctuary is another great place to spot animals. Wanna go to a remote place? Spend some time in the Turtle Islands or Rogbonko Village Retreat!

Wanna stay active? Hike Mount Bintumani, Sierra Leone’s highest peak (1,945 meters/6,381ft.) Are you into culture? Check out Bonthe , home to the Sherbro people. You can also visit cities such as Bo Town or Kabala .

All right! Now you know everything about the best places to visit in Sierra Leone! Feel free to check out the official Sierra Leone National Tourist Board website which features regular updated content. Now here are some tips to help you plan your trip!

Sierra Leone travel tips

  • It’s very likely you’ll get there by plane and land in Freetown, the capital. Then you’ll have to take a ferry to get in town. Most citizens from Western countries need a visa to get in the country. Get in touch with VSL and send all the documents required, they’ll do it for you. You’ll be able to stay up to 30 days in the country. You can also get your visa on arrival.
  • A yellow fever vaccination is a must to get in the country, and malaria medication is highly recommended.
  • Where to stay in Sierra Leone? Roy Hotel and Restaurant is a nice hotel in Freetown with friendly staff and good breakfast. Atlantic Lumley Hotel is a great hotel too. In Banana Islands, you have to stay at Bafa Resort . Spacious tents, great food and really cool staff! For a nice resort along the beach, I suggest Tokeh Beach Resort .
  • Getting around in Sierra Leone on your own can be challenging. In Freetown you have options: taxis, okadas (mototaxis), public buses, poda poda (private buses) and keke (tuktuk). But if you leave the capital, it’s best to hire a tour company such as VSL .
  • It’s best to go to Sierra Leone in the dry season from November to April. It’s easy to get around and the risk of malaria is lower. In the rainy season, roads are sometimes blocked because of heavy rain.
  • Sierra Leone is safe now. The civil war ended in 2002, a long time ago. Just follow basic precautions and use your common sense (don’t wear flashy jewelry, don’t flash out your brand new iPhone, etc.). Pick-pocketing can definitely occur. Travel insurance is a must. Anything can happen. Click here to get one.
  • You’ll need a travel plug adapter in Sierra Leone. Click here to get one.
  • English is widely spoken in Sierra Leone so you won’t have problems communicating with the locals. It’s the official language in the country with Krio, an English-based creole language.
  • Cash is king. There aren’t many ATMs in the country. You can use your credit card at hotels and some restaurants in Freetown, but you’re expected to pay everything in cash outside of the capital. You can exchange money at the airport, the bank or in the street via the money-changers/dollar boys. You’ll get a much better rate exchanging high notes ($50/€50 or more) than small ones ($20/€20 or less).

The Best Things To Do in Sierra Leone & Itinerary

is sierra leone a tourist destination

Sierra Leone had been a bucket list destination of mine for years before I finally got to visit in 2019 and it was everything I hoped it would be and more.

It wasn’t the war-torn country everyone seemed to think (and vocalised to me frequently before my visit), but a vibrant and exciting up-and-coming destination with plenty to keep an adventurous traveller occupied.

Plus, if you don’t speak French (which I don’t) it’s a perfect looking for an introduction to West Africa travel , as it’s one of the few English-speaking West African nations.

This post has been a while coming, but following on from my post about things to know before you travel to Sierra Leone , I wanted to share my recommended itineraries and favourite things to do in Sierra Leone, a wonderful, yet often misrepresented country.

The Big Market, Freetown, Sierra Leone

Immerse Yourself in the Culture in Freetown

You’re most likely to start or end your trip in Freetown, especially if flying in, so you should definitely check out this cool, pretty and interesting city.

The city got its name because it was one of the places that many slaves were rehomed at the end of the slave trade. This included those coming back from Europe and the Americas as well as those who were rescued from slave ships coming from elsewhere.

Because of this, Sierra Leone is very ethnically diverse, with a number of different tribes and influences from many other parts of Africa.

You can go around the city on your own, no problem, but I would highly recommend taking a guided tour of the main sights, to help you understand the complex history of the city and country.

I found Freetown to be pretty safe, however, as always, you should be vigilant in the city, especially at night.

Recommended Time: 2 to 3 nights is a good amount of time.

is sierra leone a tourist destination

Places to visit include:

  • The Big Market: Here you’ll find a mix of things to buy, from everyday items to fabric, jewellery, local crafts, black soap, and antique masks. Barter like crazy – the stall owners are lovely and friendly, but at the end of the day, if you’re a tourist so you’ll get higher prices.
  • Cotton Tree: This ancient tree is one of Freetown’s most important landmarks.
  • St George’s Cathedral: Built in 1817 to commemorate sailors lost at sea. We were fortunate to hear the choir practicing when we were there.
  • Sierra Leone National Museum: Located next to the Cotton Tree, the Sierra Leone National Museum was a good place to visit to get an insight into the history, tribes and cultures of Sierra Leone.
  • Lumley Beach: This is a vibrant stretch of beach in the city, where you’ll find a mix of locals, expats and some tourists too. A great place for people-watching with a lot of the bars and restaurants are located along this stretch. Roy’s is a popular spot for sundowners and dinner.
  • Bunce Island : A must-visit is Bunce Island, located in the Sierra Leone River, where you can step back in time and learn about the fort where more than 50,000 people were shipped off to the Americas as slaves.  Trips can be organised via hotels or a tour agency like Visit Sierra Leone , and usually depart from Aberdeen and last from early morning to mid-afternoon.
  • Take Part in the Sierra Leone Marathon : Each year in May, the charity  Street Child  holds the  Sierra Leone Marathon . Keen runners take part in the race and whilst they’re there and afterward, they organise group trips where you can travel the country and learn about the work of the charity.

Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

See the Cheeky Chimps at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Located just outside of Freetown, the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a great place to go and see rescued chimpanzees.

The sanctuary cares for around 100 chimps and began as a project to help enforce wildlife laws and rehabilitate chimpanzees that had been orphaned. They have also developed a number of educational programs too with a focus on eco-tourism, sustainability, and community conservation.

They run several tours of the sanctuary per day, and you can even stay over in treehouses on the site, which was very nice, especially hearing the chimps calling out during the night.

Recommended Time: A day visit or 1 night (if you stay over at the sanctuary) is enough.

Rogbonko Village Retreat, Sierra Leone

Experience Sierra Leonian Hospitality at the Rogbonko Village Retreat

Another great experience on our trip to Sierra Leone was staying Rogbonko Village Retreat .

The village is home to the people of the Temne tribe and we stayed there for 2 nights. When we arrived we were welcomed with open arms and the whole village came out to say hi. It was wonderful,  overwhelming, and unexpected.

We spent the days we were there getting an insight into village life, visiting the local school, learning about palm wine production, sleeping in traditional houses (there’s no electricity), eating local food and learning about the culture. At certain times of year (during/after the rainy season), you can take rides in dugout canoes, but it was a bit too dry in March when we were there.

It was a little disorganised at times, but that was part of the charm. It wasn’t too touristy and over-rehearsed, it just was what it was.

Located about 3 hours from Freetown, we made the trip out to Rogbonko Village Retreat by car (the benefits of being in a group), but you could get public transport to Magburaka and arrange a pick up from there or hire a motorbike/taxi for the last bit.

Recommended Time: I would spend 1 or 2 nights here.

Rogbonko Village Retreat, Sierra Leone

Go on Safari in the Outamba-Kilimi National Park

Located in the northwest of the country you’ll find Outamba-Kilimi National Park, Sierra Leone’s premier safari destination.

Whilst it doesn’t quite compare with the safaris or east and southern Africa, it should be able to give you your safari fix! Here you can see animals such as colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, hippos, elephants and birds.

You can organise safaris from Freetown, or Makeni or I believe you can make your own way there and hire a guide (I haven’t done this myself, so do your research before you rock up).

Recommended Time: I recommend 2 nights here.

Hiking in Sierra Leone

Refresh and Go Hiking in Kabala

If you’re looking for an escape from the heat and humidity, head to Kabala in the north of Sierra Leone where you’ll find beautiful countryside and plenty of hiking opportunities.

Head up to Gbawuria Hill for lovely views over the surrounding area, including Kabala town and the Wara Wara Mountains.

At New Year the town hosts a famous festival – so you could always time your trip with that for an extra special treat!

Recommended Time: 1 – 2 nights.

Hiking in Sierra Leone

Climb Mount Bintumani

For the hikers out there Mount Bintumani, in the Loma Mountains, is Sierra leone’s highest peak standing at 1,945 metres.

You can climb the mountain in a day, but many spread the climb over a few days.

You will need to speak to the local Chief before you climb the mountain to negotiate the price. For more information, check out this blog .

Recommended Time: It takes at least a couple of days to do the hike.

Tiwai Island Sierra Leone

Search for Pygmy Hippos on Tiwai Island

We went to the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary to find the elusive pygmy hippo, known to roam the waters here.

Did we find one? Nope.

But, it was still a fantastic experience!

The island is an eco-project, surrounded by the Moa River and no-one lives on the island itself (except for the staff and researchers), but there are lots of villages nearby. To reach the island, you need to take a short boat trip from the mainland.

We hiked through the jungle and although we didn’t see the hippos, we did see some beautiful primates, including colobus monkeys as well as bats and lots of insects, mostly flying termites, in fact, I found a few down my bra when I got undressed – well, just the wings, I have no idea where the bodies went. So, if you have an insect phobia, this may not be the place for you.

We also saw the locals scooping the termites into bowls of water and joked about ‘fly soup’, well it turns out they are a local delicacy and we weren’t too far off-base.

The people in the nearby village of Kambama were extremely welcoming and we had the chance to visit the school and see some cultural dancing. The local tribe here is the Mende, and the dances were quite different from what we had seen at the Rogbonko Village Retreat. There was also plenty of time for us to swim in the river, lounge on the beaches and take boat tours around the island.

We camped in basic tents that they provided but there is also a research station with rooms (this was under renovation when we were there) or you can take your own. The bathroom facilities were fine (mostly flushing toilets and running water). The staff cooked local food for us.

Recommended Time: 2 nights.

Tribal dancing in Sierra Leone.

Immerse Yourself in Nature at the Gola Rainforest National Park

Lying next to Tiwai Island is the Gola Rainforest National Park . Here you’ll find many animal species, including monkeys, duikers, and elusive pygmy hippos, as well as smaller mammals, butterflies, and reptiles.

There are a number of different communities that you can visit or stay with inside the park where you can get a glimpse into local life and experience various local cultural dances and traditions.

Recommended Time: 1 – 2 nights to get the full experience.

Banana Islands, Sierra Leone

Chill Out on the Banana Islands

Not far off the coast, near the Freetown peninsular lies the Banana Islands. There are three islands, Dublin and Ricketts (which are inhabited and linked by a stone causeway) and Mes-Meheux which is uninhabited.

We based ourselves at Dalton’s Banana Guesthouse on Dublin Island. This is the main backpacker hangout on the island, run by my pal Greg.

I absolutely loved waking up and pretty much rolling out of bed and into a hammock. The place isn’t fancy by any means, but it’s friendly and homely and a good place to meet other travellers and there are a number of activities to keep you busy.

Whilst we were here, we went on a historical tour, took a snorkelling trip to Mes-Meheux and we were invited to a boat launch by the nearby village. This was a crazy experience, with blessings from the local pastor (who also baptized us – whether we wanted it or not) and lots of throwing food and money into the boat. A true Banana Islands experience.

For those who want a bit more comfort or glamping, there’s the nearby Bafa Resort . You can also go there for dinner and drinks, which we did.

Recommended Time: 1 – 2 nights, or more. I loved it here.

The Turtle Islands, Sierra Leone

Get Away from it All on the Remote Turtle Islands

This was probably my favourite place to visit in the whole of Sierra Leone, mainly due to the sheer remoteness of the destination. The islands are almost completely untouched by tourism.

The downside is, that they are not cheap to get to as it’s an absolute mission to make it over there. There are no facilities at all, you need to take everything with you and be fully self-supported. But the locals did sell us fresh fish and coconuts every day, which was amazing.

Starting on the Banana Islands, we organised our trip through Dalton’s as the Banana Islands are one of the launch points for the Turtle Islands.

We made our way by small boats across the Atlantic towards the Turtle Islands. Approximately 3 hours later, land came into view (it was a welcome sight, believe me) and 4 hours later we were there (getting back is a story for another time).

We spent 3 blissful days exploring the islands, meeting the islanders and getting into ‘Beef With the Chief’ and sleeping under the stars. The locals would sell us fish and coconuts every day. It was awesome.

On a side note… there’s no electricity and there are also no toilets. You just dig a hole and off you go, so this particular excursion might not be for everyone!

I’ll write a guide to visiting the Turtle Islands soon, but just know that it was an absolute adventure in the truest sense of the word.

You can also travel to the Turtle Islands from Bonthe on Sherbro Island (some of the teachers we met there were from Bonthe) which is much closer to the Turtle Islands than Freetown or the Banana Islands, however, I don’t know of any reliable or safe operators that launch from here, so can’t recommend anything currently. Sherbro Island is also very difficult to get to in itself.

This was definitely one of my best things to do in Sierra Leone.

Recommended Time: As it’s so remote, you will need at least 2 nights.

Bureh Beach, Sierra Leone.

Explore the Beaches of the Freetown Peninsular

Sierra Leone is home to some of West Africa’s best beaches, many of which are located just south of the capital and they’re a great place to end a trip to Sierra Leone.

We only visited 3 of the beaches whilst we were there and the girls and I all had different ideas about which ones we liked the most.

Other than the beaches mentioned below, you may also want to check out John Obey, Sussex, and York (which we visited briefly, but only to sail across to the Banana Islands).

Recommended Time: As long as you can manage! This is a great place to chill at the end of your trip!

Bureh Beach

Bureh Beach was my favourite. We stayed here, using it as a base to visit the other beaches. This is the beach you can see in the picture above.

I just loved the laidback feel of the place and it’s the best place to surf in Sierra Leone. I took a lesson with the Bureh Beach surf club and it was a lot of fun.

We stayed at Lumthubul Gardens which was lovely and right on the beach (most places are) and you can also stay at the Bureh Beach Surf Club too, which would be a great place for making friends, especially in the low seasons.

Sunset at Bureh Beach, Sierra Leone

River No. 2

River No.2 Beach is quite beautiful and also the most popular. This is where many of the locals head to on weekends and holidays to party.

The beach is on a lagoon, with River No. 2 on one side and Tokeh on the other. At high tide, a small (very wobbly) boat can to take you across. This was pretty amusing and how we didn’t tip right in, I’ll never know.

There is a small fee to get onto the beach of 5000 Leones (about $0.50) to enter.. here are a few bars and restaurants and some curio shops.

Tokeh Beach was my friend Katja’s favourite. She said it was ‘the most beautiful beach’ she’d ever seen.

This is where you’ll find Sierra Leone’s premier beach resort, ‘The Place at Tokeh’. We didn’t stay here, but we ate lunch and spent most of our last afternoon here, sunbathing, using the good internet to check into our flights, getting massages and drinking cocktails.

After 2 weeks traipsing through the jungles and living the simple life on the islands, this was a nice change. However in general, it’s a bit too ‘Western’ for me (you wouldn’t even know you were in Sierra Leone)… but it is a great place to visit if a) you have the money and b) you want to decompress after a tough work week or in our case, an expedition spanning the length and breadth of the country.

Check availability and prices for The Place at Tokeh here .

Where to Shop, Eat, and Stay in Sierra Leone's Capital, According to the City's Top Fashion Designer

The under-the-radar capital of Sierra Leone has lively beaches, thought-provoking art, and great shopping. Fashion designer MaryAnn Kai Kai takes T+L on a tour.

is sierra leone a tourist destination

Yulia Denisyuk

On most Saturdays during her childhood, MaryAnn Kai Kai would go shopping with her family on Rawdon Street in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Fashion was all around Kai Kai, who grew up admiring the vast closet of her grandmother, a diplomat’s wife. “She had all kinds of African prints and the latest fashions from the U.K.,” Kai Kai says.

Today, she makes custom caftans and dresses under the label Madam Wokie, a reference to her great-great-aunt Madam Wokie Massaquoi, a former member of Sierra Leone’s parliament who once met Queen Elizabeth. Kai Kai has shown her exquisite tie-dyed m’boubou gowns on the runways of New York and Lagos and outfitted Idris Elba, the Duchess of York, and the first ladies of Angola and Nigeria.

Matthew Short/courtesy of Cole Street Guesthouse

Kai Kai also strives to give back. During the pandemic, she launched a program to teach women to hand-dye cloth using the gara technique, which originated in Indonesia. The cloth patterns that Kai Kai uses often include cow’s eyes. Last spring, with the support of the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project, she helped train 800 women across the country to make batiks and beads. Today the women sell their wares on the beaches outside town and in the more remote Banana Islands.

To explore Freetown’s creative culture, follow Kai Kai’s guide to the city.

Where to Stay

“From the veranda of Cole Street Guesthouse , in the suburb of Murray Town, you can see the Atlantic Ocean, and the courtyard is full of fruit trees. “

Where to Browse Art

“One of my favorite artists is Hawa-Jane Bangura , who has a by-appointment-only studio in Cockle Bay. Her work explores African history, culture, and identity, and she really plays around with colors.” (Above: I Am Not My Hair.)

Where to Shop

“On Malama Thomas Street, you can find vendors selling tons of different fabrics, from Sierra Leone’s gara and kontri cloth to Ghanaian, Nigerian, West African, and even Dutch prints. I also like to browse carvings, beads, jewelry, and drums at Big Markit, on Lamina Sankoh Street.”

David DiGregorio/Courtesy of National Tourist Board of Sierra Leone

Where to Eat and Drink

" At Cole Street Guest House, I order fresh juice, like ginger, mango, or hibiscus, the “ros bif” corn tacos, and the spicy jerk goat with plantains and rice. On weekends, everybody heads to the nightclub there, Warehouse , to dance and hear DJs. It has a mix of all ages. The owners are two sisters. Most of the staff, including the bouncers, are women."

For something downtown, Crown Bakery does a great Sierra Leone–style jollof rice with fish, beef, and chicken. There’s also artwork for sale.”

Where to Hit the Beach

“I always see locals out in the waves at Bureh, River No. 2, or Tokeh Beach (seen here), on the Freetown Peninsula. After a day in the sun, I like to hit Franco’s for lobster and oysters — the tables are right on the sand.”

A version of this story first appeared in the April 2024 issue of  Travel + Leisure  under the headline "All Eyes on Freetown. "

5 Reasons Why Sierra Leone Is The World's Fastest-Growing Travel Destination

*Frank Ocean plays softly in the background*

A country once devastated by war and an Ebola outbreak (completely cleared in 2015), Sierra Leone is an unfailingly hopeful nation, filled with pristine beaches , a buzzing capital city, and a melting pot of cultures. A spike in tourism could play a big role in boosting this warm-hearted country's prosperity, and there are so many reasons travelers are making the trip. Here are the top five (if you need any more convincing)!

h/t Lonely Planet

The Beaches

sierra leone travel destination

West Africa's best-kept secret is undoubtedly the beaches of Sierra Leone. The soft sand and gentle waters of the Atlantic are framed by lush green rainforest — on a clear day, they're said to be a reflection of the country's flag.

Despite the increase in visitors, that doesn't mean the beaches are flooded with tourists (just yet). Many of the best beaches require some off-roading to access, but even the most populated beaches on the Freetown peninsula are barely-touched. Let's just say the odds of getting an entire strip of sand to yourself are pretty high.

The Capital City

sierra leone travel destination

The country's vivacious capital, Freetown, is a harmonious blend of mountains, sea, and city. It is a bustling port town full of colorful architecture, friendly Krio conversation, and a landscape so picturesque you'll wonder why you haven't visited sooner.

No matter your travel style, Freetown has something for you. Shoppers won't want to miss Bo's Big Market, where you can barter for gorgeous West African fabrics, learn a thing or two from herbal remedy pros, and sample poyo , or palm wine. Outdoorsy types have an endless number of beaches and hiking trails to explore. City lovers will savor the bustling streets and street vendors.

The Wildlife

sierra leone travel destination

Sierra Leone has some of the best wildlife attractions on the continent, from primate sanctuaries to national parks. Some of the most impressive visits are the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary — where you can see endangered primates like Colobus and Diana monkeys — and the Outamba-Kilimi National Park where savannah and jungle merge.

sierra leone travel destination

Stews, smoked fish, peanuts, and banana leaves: just some of the tastiest components of Sierra Leonean cuisine. The country's food is a reflection of its complex history, drawing from the flavors of Africa, the West Indies, and the Americas. One thing most meals have in common: they aren't complete without a big helping of rice.

Sierra Leone is known for using red palm oil in a lot of dishes, which lends a unique red hue to the food prepared in it. Be sure not to miss the red-tinged Groundnut Stew, a tasty peanut stew served over a bed of rice.

Turtle Islands

sierra leone travel destination

Comprised of eight islands (seven of which are inhabited), the Turtle Islands are a stunning archipelago with miles of white sand and shallow waters. Although they're only accessible by boat , once you arrive you won't want to leave! And thankfully you don't have to, because there are plenty of places to stay and opportunities to camp.
