You can visit the Alcantara Gorge cheaply by riding with Interbus to Francavilla, and getting off at Gola Alcantara, an hour's ride. The winter timetable gives you 2-4 hours there before a return bus back. You can also take a cheap, scenic train along the coast to Messina for 8 EUR (round-trip).

As a small town, Taormina doesn't have many specialized restaurants, but Sicily's cuisine is very diverse, and offers plenty of meat/dairy/gluten-free options.

Things to do in Taormina

Flight information.

The closest airport to Taormina is Catania (CTA), which is about 1 hour from Taormina and Taormina Mare. Direct flights to Catania are available from Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester and take approximately 3 hours.

Thanks to its southerly location, Sicily enjoys mild weather all year round. Spring and autumn are both lovely times to visit, with temperatures in the high teens and early 20s (although up in the hills and on the slopes of Mount Etna it can be significantly cooler). In summer, you can expect temperatures in the high 20s – perfect for spending time on the island's beautiful beaches.

Visa Information

At the current time, British citizens do not require a visa to visit Italy.

Whilst tipping isn’t embedded into Italian culture it is always appreciated as an acknowledgement of good service. Nowadays people generally round up a bill in a bar or cafe and leave 5-10% extra on a restaurant bill. Taxi bills are usually also rounded up.   On small group escorted tours, it is customary to leave a token of appreciation for the driver and guide at the end of the tour.

Cefalù is first mentioned in 396 BC by the Scholar Diodoro Siculo and today the town distinguishes itself by its medieval settings. Starting from Piazza Garibaldi, following Corso Ruggero until reaching the magnificent Piazza del Duomo, where you will experience the splendidly intact atmosphere of this pearl of the Mediterranean Sea. DAY 1 – Depart the USA

Depart the United States for trip to Sicily, Italy. Typically your flight will be overnight. Enjoy dinner and breakfast on board the airplane. Most flights include in flight entertainment too.

DAY 2 – Arrive in Palermo

Upon arrival in Palermo your Sicily vacation with airfare includes the airport transfer to your hotel. You’ll be met at Palermo airport and taken by private car to your 4-star accommodation. Freshen up and then get out and enjoy the balance of your first day in Palermo independently. DAY 4 – Erice

From Palermo you’ll travel around Sicily’s northwest coast to Erice. In Erice you’ll be treated to awesome views and an authentic Sicilian lunch. In Erice you’ll have time to stroll the Medieval town and admire its Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture. After Erice you’ll then continue along the coast to Agrigento. There among the Valley of Temples you’ll stay for the night. Overnight: Agrigento Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5 – Valley of the Temples 

Today wake up among the Temples in the ancient Greek Valley of the Temples. During the Magna Grecia era Sicily was the center of ancient Greek civilization. The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is the site of eight ancient Greek Temples. You’ll tour this archaeological site that dates back to 400 B.C. After the Sicily tour continues on the gorgeous coastal town of Taormina. Taormina is a charming town located in the hills above the Mediterranean sea. It has been famous among tourists for thousands of years. Europe’s Royal Court, fat cat politicians, Russian oligarchs, Hollywood stars, and business titans all like to chill out in Taormina. DAY 6 – Mount Etna & Taormina Tour

Today you’ll visit Europe’s most active and highest Volcano Mount Etna. You may climb around the Silvestri Craters. There on the mountain you’ll explore the varied layers of lava, which have solidified over the centuries. After trekking around Mount Etna you’ll return to Taormina.  Your Taormina tour will begin with a visit to the Greek Theater. This authentic ancient Greek amphitheater is built to take in the glorious view of Mt Etna and the Sicilian countryside. After the tour of Taormona you have plenty of leisure time to stroll, shop, savor the views and enjoy an espresso or gelato in this Sicilian resort town. Overnight: Taormina Meals: Breakfast

DAY 7 – Taormina Leisure

Today you have the entire day to enjoy Taormina at leisure. Or you may join the optional tour to the most beautiful of all ancient Greek cities Syracuse (Siracusa) . Located south of Taormina it was the center of Greek urban civilization 2500 years ago.  Today it continues to be a thriving Sicilian city. Day 8 – Visit Piazza Armerina en Route to Palermo 

Begin today by traveling to Piazza Armerina to view the intricate examples of Roman mosaics at the famous Roman Villa del Casale, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These extraordinarily vivid mosaics, deal with numerous subjects, ranging from Homeric escapades and mythological scenes to portrayals of daily life. The Villa itself was rediscovered in the 19th century after being almost completely covered by a landslide. After lunch, continue to Palermo, where you bid farewell to your newfound friends on your last night in Sicily Overnight: Palermo Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 9 – Departure from Sicily

Today the tour ends with breakfast. Transfer to the airport after a glorious vacation around Sicily taking home memories that’ll last a lifetime.
