Randall Hank Williams better known as Hank Williams, Jr. and Bocephus, is an American country singer-songwriter and musician, he's the son of legendary country music singer Hank Williams.

Williams' early career definitely seemed to centre around his father's music. Williams first performed on stage by singing one of his father's songs when he was eight years old. In 1964, he made his recording debut with 'Long Gone Lonesome Blues', one of his father's many classic songs. Williams provided the singing voice of his father in the 1964 film 'Your Cheatin' Heart' and also recorded an album of duets with his father.

Williams' early career was guided, and to an extent dominated, by his mother, who is widely claimed as being the driving force that led his late father to musical superstar status during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Audrey promoted young Hank Jr. as a Hank Williams tribute act, even to the extent of having stage clothes designed for him that were identical to his father's, and encouraging vocal styles very similar to those of his father.

This all became too much for the young musician who eventually severed the ties with his mother in an attempt to find his own musical voice. By the mid-1970s Williams began to pursue a musical direction that would eventually make him a superstar. At the time of recording a series of moderately successful songs, Williams began a heavy pattern of both drug and alcohol abuse. Upon moving to Alabama, in an attempt to refocus both his creative energy and his troubled personal life, Williams began playing music with Southern rock musicians including Waylon Jennings, Toy Caldwell, and Charlie Daniels.

He has achieved huge commercial success on the US Country charts over his career, most notably a run of six albums released between 1984 and 1988 which all topped the chart. He has had countless wins and nominations at Academy of Country Music and the Grammy Awards.

Live reviews

Still touring and going strong at the ripe old age of 65, Hank Williams Jr. (the son of arguably country music's most famous figure) is currently one of country music's famous assets, very much like his father. With over thirty albums recorded to date, the discography of Hank Williams Jr. is nothing short of incredibly impressive. Not only this, but he certainly knows how to get a crowd rocking, as shown through one of his most recent sets at Chilifest 2014. Hank's loud and booming voice echoed round the entire audience in the large open venue as he kicked off with 'If The South Woulda Won' where a nifty saxophone solo was very much appreciated by everyone. It was impossible to stop moving all the way through this concert as nearly every song had that foot-tapping melody that is so consistent in country music. Alcohol was being thrown everywhere in crowd as the set progressed, which included the songs 'All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight' and 'The Blues Man'. What was beautiful about this performance though was the touching tributes to his late father as he covered several songs from Hank Williams Snr. such as 'Your Cheating Heart' – a clear fan favourite.

Hank Williams Jr. clearly has many more years of touring in him and with such a plethora of songs at his disposal, you'll never know quite what to expect, but you can be sure that there will be classics galore!

As the son of one of the all-time icons of the country genre, Hank Williams, it’s perhaps not surprising that Hank Williams Jr. would go on to follow on his father’s footsteps - to some extent, at least. He certainly can’t be accused of failing to put his own spin on the genre, or of simply trading off of his father’s name and songs; instead, he brought a rough and ready rock approach the country sound, one that’s often been described as ‘outlaw country’, or just lumped in with the hard southern rock sound that’s become so prominent on the U.S. rock scene these past few decades. Either way, there’s no question that Williams has been commercially successful as a result; he’s made no fewer than fifty-four studio albums, which overall have shifted in excess of thirty six million copies; his most recent full-length, Old School New Rules, dropped in 2012. He continues to tour the U.S. extensively, although his audience outside of his homeland is limited; his cult fanbase turn up to his shows for both the high-octane country rock that characterises them, and Williams’ now-infamous - but indeed customary - rants against President Barack Obama, a staple of the shows since he took office.

Joeg_67’s profile image

I suppose when you are the offspring of one of country music's all time greats, the natural talent was going to be somewhat inherited. That is not to say that Hank Williams, Jr has not earned his own loyal fanbase upon his own merits. At the age of 65 he continues to tour extensively due to the demand remaining ever present to hear his classic material on the big stage.

It is clear from the very moment that Hank steps out and greets both his accompanying musicians and the waiting crowds that performing is very much keeping him young at heart. He looks so comfortable onstage and clearly still enjoys playing classic songs including 'Country State of Mind' and 'Keep The Change' which sound as fresh as ever partly thanks to his solid instrumental abilities. There is not one moment that Williams looks as though he is struggling with notes or his own guitar, yet if he had the slick backing band gathered would have covered him with ease. By the final country tones of 'Family Tradition' both audience and performer have had one hell of a great evening.

I enjoyed the show overall however I wasn't there to see that much of Stapleton and that less of Hank. Where was My name is Bocephis? Where was Blues man. Where was Man of steel. I've seen Hank many many times but this was not my favorite show by any stretch of the imagination. Vocals were not loud enough and the instruments were too loud. Parking Wanda horendous experience. I will not be back to this MidFlorida Amphitheatre ever again

AWESOME show! I’ve seen Hank many times and I’m never disappointed with his shows. I wish we would have had more time to talk with him during the Meet n Greet, but I understand where they’re coming from. They have a schedule to keep. At least I did get to meet him and shake his hand.

Hank puts on an awesome show. Very up beat. Never a dull moment.Hank's band is also top notch. Will definitely see Hank again.

The AVA amphitheater is a very nice pavillion. We had awesome seats. So close to the stage.

Lousy concert. The venue was great, but the sound team was terrible. Hank has a strong voice. But, between the band and poor mixing this proved to be a marginal concert. Too bad because Hank is a legend.....

Hank puts on a really great show. We had an awesome time. One thing he does is change the words to songs you think you know to satisfy the location he is at. A really great performance.

Event Details

Hank Williams Jr.’s extremely impressive resume has spawned 70 million albums sold worldwide, six RIAA-certified Platinum albums, 20 RIAA Gold-certified, 13 No. 1 albums and 10 No. 1 singles. Marking 52 years since his first album in 1964, Williams Jr. released It’s About Time (Nash Icon Records) in 2016. In addition to the history-making “Are You Ready for the Country,” the project included tunes such as “Dress Like an Icon,” “Just Call Me Hank,” “It’s About Time” and “The Party’s On” as well as re-recorded versions of classics “Mental Revenge” and “Born to Boogie” with Brantley Gilbert, Justin Moore and Brad Paisley on guitar. It’s About Time marked Hank’s 37th studio album in his five-decade career. Following It’s About Time, Williams Jr. has released several compilations, including All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over: Great Tailgating Songs, A Country Boy Can Survive (Box Set), Hank Jr. Sings Hank Sr. and 35 Biggest Hits.   In 2022 Hank Jr. continued to redefine the boundaries of rock and country music with the genre- crossing, chart-topping release of his most recent album, Rich White Honky Blues. Debuting at No. 1 on the Current Country, Americana/Folk and Blues Albums charts, the project was a successful collaboration between Williams and GRAMMY-winning Producer, Dan Auerbach. The 12-song-set was recorded live, reprising classics from Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, R.L. Burnside, Muddy Waters, and more, delivering reinvigorated classic blues sounds infused with Williams’ signature rock and country flavor.   He continues to add accolades to an extremely impressive resume, which includes ACM Entertainer of the Year, CMA Entertainer of the Year and BMI Icon, in addition to a GRAMMY win and coveted inductions into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Country Music Hall of Fame. As a touring artist, Hank Jr. was a pioneer in bringing arena rock production values to country music, and he remains one of the most consistent ticket sellers in music, period, as generation after generation gets turned on to one of the most dynamic live performers ever to take the stage

Hank Williams Jr. to Celebrate 45 Years of “Family Tradition” on Tour

Trigger News Charley Crockett , Hank Williams Jr. , Marty Stuart , Neal McCoy , Nitty Gritty Dirt Band , Old Crow Medicine Show , Whiskey Myers --> 34 Comments

hank williams jr tour schedule 2022

Hank Williams Jr. doesn’t tour very often. He’d rather spend his time in a deer blind or out on a dock these days. But the Country Music Hall of Famer is always good for a couple of weeks of tour dates each year to keep the money rolling in, and to keep the “Family Tradition” alive. And when Hank does tour, he tours hard. In 2024, Hank will be taking a cool list of openers out with him on the road as he officially celebrates 45 year anniversary of the release of his signature song “Family Tradition.” The rowdy friends he’ll be taking out on the road include Charley Crockett, Whiskey Myers, as well as fellow legends Neal McCoy, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives. Old Crow Medicine Show will also open a date after touring with Bocephus in 2022. Along with his own tour dates, Hank Jr. will also be headlining the Two Step Inn Fest in Georgetown, TX on Sunday, April 21st, as well as select dates on the Rock The Country Festival with Jason Aldean and Kid Rock. Some of the dates are on sale now. The others highlighted below are on sale Friday, December 15th at 10 am local time HERE .

It’s a shame that Neil Mccoy is mostly known for his stupid songs and not his cover of ‘Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye’

' src=

He’s great live, stupid songs and all.

' src=

What stupid songs are you referring to? Not trying to start an argument just wondering because he definelty has some humorous songs but I wouldn’t call any of his songs I’ve heard stupid (I haven’t gone deep into his discography, and I can assume his “take a knee” song is fairly stupid, though I’ve never heard it and I probably agree with the sentiment, but I can’t imagine it being an artistic achievement or anything)

' src=

Hank Williams Jr, I attended a concert when he was 13 years old. I attended a number of concerts since then. I love his songs – never heard him sing a bad song! Yes, he’s a rebel and gets into trouble but that doesn’t mean you should bad mouth him. Is your slate clean enough to get in the Pearly Gates? I love his Dad’s music and all Classic Country music! 🎶

Wink, The Shake, Billy’s got his beer goggles on

' src=

Fair enough. Wink is a great song though, not everything has to be serious.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Seen hank in concert 3 times, all 3 sucked,I wouldn’t walk across my yard to see him again,I loved him as kid,and we see eye to eye on most things conservative, but in concert,NO.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Well good. The true hank fans don’t want you to walk across your yard to see him. If you don’t realize that the man’s in his freaking mid-70s and is doing this longer than most people been alive since it was 8 years old. There’s a reason why he doesn’t have the bama band anymore because he can’t get out there and do the shows like he used to do. So it’s okay You keep your dollar and I’ll give it to him the next time I see him

' data-tf-not-load src=

I used to be a big fan of him ….until he got to rude/arrogant ….especially when kids would follow him for a signature….he ignores them….he was on the Bobby bones talk show …. He really was at his worst 👎….hes sure lost my vote…..

' data-tf-not-load src=

I have to agree I find his concerts to be frustrating and hard to get into. I think I even heard a few boos the last time I saw him and felt like he lost the audience. He has so many crowd pleasing songs that everyone was to sing along to but he ad libs so much that no one can keep up, then its just the melody that he will play and about the time the crowd gets into it he’s rambling into a different song. I feel like he tries to get through the concert as fast as he can and doesnt take the time to try to connect with his audience.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I agree. Love his studio music. Saw 2 of his concerts in different cities with friends and both times we left before halfway. Volume was too loud. Led to headaches. Back in the 80s this was.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I like Hank Jr., but I’m not going to give him a dime to stand up there acting a fool, bragging and singing parts of songs here and there.

Been burned by his hubris before.

Yeah, sure, I was there to see Hank Jr., but I wouldn’t have been there at all without his music, which he barely seems to care about. He’s turned into a caricature of himself, if he ever really existed…

' data-tf-not-load src=

I saw him twice in the mid 1990s, when he was giving it his all. I’d still see him these days, but with the knowledge of your caveat, S Marco, I’d expect the worst, hope for a relatively good show, and not buy the priciest seats (although his upcoming tour doesn’t seem to blanket the Midwest, so this is all theoretical).

I’m sure like all other artists this is just a start of the tour dates will be added… I’ve seen Hank more times than most. Hell the sign bird of Hank and not Ruger is on my arm. I go back to the days of Meyrle Kilgore when there still was private security before thank was sued because of a imposter security specialist. Any at 15 he was drunk in WPB, FL. HE COULDN’T PLAY A LICK. The next morning on the wing of his jet he did a 3 hour acoustic for those of us there. Which was about 1/3 – 1/2 of the concert crowd. Again the man is in his 70’s. Been doing this for almost just as long. Like 66 year’s. And he still puts Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift to shame

' data-tf-not-load src=

I saw him live in May, he was hitting him just fine, played several songs live I never thought I’d hear him do. He sounded great then. Only played for an hour tho, that was disappointing.

Hank Torres every year. What do you mean he doesn’t tour very often. He still sells out everywhere he goes. And yeah it’s been 45 years since family tradition. But shit this was reported on last week. Catch up. And quit freaking saying shit that ain’t true

Did you not read past the first sentence? Only touring about two weeks out of every year would be “not very often” compared to the vast majority of live performers. The second sentence of the article states, “the Country Music Hall of Famer is always good for a couple of weeks of tour dates each year… so nobody is saying he doesn’t tour every year.

Yes, this information was released last week. Was too busy to report it then. Multiple dates are going on sale this Friday, so I thought it was a good time to address the news. Not sure what the friction is about.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Give Trigger a fucking break. He’s the one writer on this website, a website that uploads at 10-15 articles every week, all of which feature a level of research, detail, consideration and entertainment value that you won’t find anywhere else.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Hank Williams Junior….W H A T !!!!!! NUFF SAID

' data-tf-not-load src=

Who the fuck is Hank Torres?

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’ve seen Hank Jr 4 times, 3 in the 80’s and another one in 2019. You have to know what you are getting into – he’s going to go on some political rant, he is going to tell you how great he is (and usually exaggerate), he’s going to do medley’s and he’s going to change the words to some songs. In addition to all that he will play some great and iconic music and give you a good show. If you are ok with all that you should be able to enjoy yourself, if you are not ok, best to skip. I did enjoy these shows but do find the changing of words annoying, especially Country Boy can Survive.

' data-tf-not-load src=

All true, and I’m a Hank Jr defender. I’m remembering a Volunteer Jam with Hank Jr and The Charlie Daniels Band. It was what you might call Hillbilly Woodstock. Quite the experience. Jr, as you might expect, was halfway lit.My theory on why he’s this way live is I believe playing live fills him with anxiety and a sense of dread, so drinking gets him through it all. He did do an acoustic section during the set, well worth the admission, where he told stories and played his father’s songs and some of his own. But most of the show was braggadocio, testosterone, chest thumping, showmanship, and loud guitar. In other words, just about perfect. What a show, what a spectacle and so worth it. Nonetheless, the crowd in my opinion is the real show. Put several thousand drinking, screaming rednecks onto a lawn and watch the chaos unfold. In the Midwest, corn country, we grow them big and my advice is if you encounter a 6’6″ 300+ pound drunk hugger gorilla man, and they are everywhere in a Bocephus show, take it from my cousin, just hug em…way better than trying to ignore em. Listen to me, I know what I’m talking about. 😅 And oh yeah, go see Jr, but be forewarned, it ain’t no NPR sponsored Americana show in a listening room. 🤣

' data-tf-not-load src=

Having a few drinks to calm the nerves is understandable. I possess no musical talent aside from being an excellent air guitarist when “Mr. Crowley” plays when I’m 20 beers deep, but I always figured that if I was a professional singer/musician, I would need a drink or two just to work up the nerve to get on stage in the first place. But… a couple drinks to calm the nerves isn’t the same as being shitfaced on stage, which I’ve heard Hank has been on many occasions.

' data-tf-not-load src=

This makes me think of David Allan Coe’s show in the early aughts. I saw home about twice a year over a period of a few years when he would come to Ziggys in Winston-Salem. Between the performance, venue, and crowd, it was bizarre and amazing. It was so unique to its time and place; I’ll never experience anything quite like it again.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I Googled it to make sure if DAC is still alive. His website looks abandoned, but there are references to surgery and Covid from over a year ago. I gather that he’s not touring anymore, and like others his age or even younger, he may require personal assistance.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I love Hank Williams I see him in Denise Texas.

I’m trying to catch a few acts that I’ve never seen, on their last go round. I’ve got tickets to see the Oak Ridge Boys in Lancaster next spring. They may be in various stages of infirmity, but at least I know they’ll put on a full-length professional show, as best they can.

I would go to see Hank Jr.–either in Harford or Saratoga Springs–and stay overnight–but some of the comments here leave me leery. I loved his old records, but I’m not really interested in driving hundreds of miles to be harangued by someone who thinks he’s doing you a favor just by appearing. I think I’ll wait to hear a few more reviews and reactions to what Hank’s doing now before deciding.

I saw Hank Williams Jr. at Under The Big Sky Fest last year, and it was a good show. Was he ridiculously braggadocious? Absolutely. Did he change the words to songs and do medleys? Of course. Was I happy I saw him? Yes. Is it worth driving hundreds of miles and staying in a hotel for? Perhaps not. But hundreds of thousands of people do. He’s Bocephus. You have to know what you’re getting.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I hope you saw last night’s show in Hartford. It was great! My first time seeing him, and I like his music but I went mostly out of curiosity. I was pleasantly surprised. He kept the audience on their feet for the entire show. We all got our money’s worth!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Bocephus doesn’t make it out this way too often so I’ve never had the honor of seeing him live.

Would be a great show. I’d love to see some Thunderhead..

' data-tf-not-load src=

Worst concert I ever saw was Hank Jr. in Buena, N.J., on a stage in a campground where you brought your own lawn chair. It was an older and not very large crowd, and the opening act was some rock band that put everyone in a bad mood. Finally, Bocephus came out, did a handful of songs, and walked off the stage. Everyone just kind of looked at each other wondering if the show was already over. He never came back, so I guess the show was already over! It was not a high-energy crowd, but still you should get more than 25 minutes out of the headliner…

' data-tf-not-load src=

I seen him sometime in the early 00s in Roanoke VA. At one point, he grabbed his dick and balls through his pants, and mashed them into the piano keys as if he was playing a solo with his dick. (If im lying, Im Dying) It was a good show…….

' data-tf-not-load src=

I worked the Family Tradition Tour with you and the Bama Band. I would love to work in this tour. It is so impressive that you great in your shows now just as you were 45 years ago¹

I saw Hank last night for the first time. It was great! He had two other acts who I didn’t know, Charlie Crockett and William Beckmann, but they were also excellent. I was a fan of his Family Tradition album and was familiar with most of the songs he sang. He uses accomplished musicians and he puts on a great show. Most of the crowd was on their feet for his entire performance. He does not hold back!
