Nature, culture and adventure: 9 of the best experiences in south africa.

Safari at sunrise to spot the Big Five. Look down at Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain. Taste a bunny chow. Discover culture, history and tradition. Here's the best things to do in South Africa...

1. Discover the wild side on safari

Safari in South Africa with TUI Tours (TUI)

Huge in both variety and size, South Africa’s biggest draw is undoubtedly it's wildlife. Head to Hluhluwe Game Reserve – the country’s oldest safari park and one of the many places you can visit with TUI Tours – to tick off the Big Five. Drive up and down the rolling landscape, while looking out over the vast stretch of green grassland, only broken by the famous mammals grazing through it. Particularly important to this park is the white rhino as huge efforts have been made by the park to conserve this endangered animal.

Another popular place for Big Five-focused safaris is Kruger National Park. Wake early to see the park doused in an orangery red glow from sky to ground. Shortly after dawn, the sought-after residents start to wake, and you’ll likely catch them on their morning prowl. Choose a game drive near the Phalaborwa side of nearly two-million-hectare Kruger  to enjoy sightings of wobbly-legged giraffes, zebra and antelope.

Around two hours north of Johannesburg lies untamed and wild Waterberg, a perfect place for an African bush experience that will make you feel like you’re in the Lion King. Drive over diverse landscapes of rocky mountains, thick grasslands, dusty roads and  vast wetlands to see a wide variety of Africa’s life. A visit to Waterberg’s Entabeni Rehabilitation Wildlife Centre will give you an insight into the significant work being done to help care for, and up the numbers of, elusive white lions.

As well as its myriad mammals, South Africa boasts a brilliant birdlife. Turn your eyes to the skies in Dundee’s Ithala Game reserve, where you can visit with TUI Tours, to see some of more than 3,000 species of birds brighten the horizon. The larger of these include black eagles, ostriches and lappet faced and white-backed vultures.

An alternative birdwatching experience can be had over in Cape Town, where a colony of African penguins crowd the sands of Boulders Beach and bodysurf in the waves.

2. Surround yourself with natural beauty

Although people focus on its inhabitants, the landscapes of South Africa’s National Park will make life-lasting memories in and of themselves. iSimangaliso Wetland Park, for instance, is a place of outstanding natural beauty, where green-doused mountains blur into the long stretches of golden sand at their feet, contrasting with electric blue lakes and the ocean. Walk the grasslands, looking out for elephants stomping through before snorkelling in the waters of postcard-perfect Cape Vidal beach.

Take the scenic road to Krueger National Park by following the Panorama Route with TUI Tours which offers up new gawp-worthy natural landscapes at every turn. Look down from Blyde River Canyon – the third largest in the world – to see swirls of cloud seemingly fallen from the sky that cling around the mossy outposts jutting out of the river. Climb even higher to God’s Window, where you can perch precariously on the edge of a one thousand metre drop, craggy mountains and trickling waterfalls sprawling out around your feet.

Nearby lies Bourke’s Luck Potholes, where you can look down the vertical edges of the striped cliffs at the spiral-shaped holes cut into the rock at the bottom, where the convergence of two rivers have been tirelessly eroding the stone for centuries to create the stunning piece of natural art. And this doesn’t even scratch the surface of the diverse landscapes on display along this extraordinary route.

Combine incredible views of natural scenery with trekking. A hike through Royal Natal National Park offers endless eyefuls of the famous Drakensberg Mountains. Alternatively, Tsitsikamma National Park offers an ever-changing ramble from the golden beach of Sandy Bay, through a thick forest and to the mouth of the Storms River, where you can taste the salt in the air.

3. See South Africa from the water

The Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and thousands of lakes and rivers splashed across the surface of South Africa makes it a great country to explore from the water. For wildlife watching opportunities, head to St Lucia Lake in iSimangaliso Wetland Park. From this 80km long and 23km wide lake, you’ll see pink flamingos skimming the surface of the water, paddling pelicans, sunbathing crocodiles and just the eyes of hippos visible above the depths.

An alternative safari cruise can be enjoyed by bobbing over the mirror-like surface of the Olifants River. Look out for hippos stomping up the banks, crocodiles and elephants dousing themselves in the cooling water.

Boat trips can also be taken from Cape Town to the nearby Seal Island, where you can enjoy the sight of 75,000 Cape fur seals. There’s so many that the entire island looks like its been encrusted with shiny black stones. Visit Seal Island in winter to spot the Great White Sharks who come here to hunt.

Visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned (Shutterstock)

Swap wildlife for history by visiting Robben island, also off the coast of Cape Town which was previously used as a prison and where Nelson Mandela was held for several years.

4. Visit Cape Town

Cape Town's iconic Table Mountain (Shutterstock)

The Cape of Good Hope is the most South West point of Africa (Shutterstock)

The Cape of Good Hope is the most South West point of Africa (Shutterstock)

Cape Town is a city defined by its rugged wilderness which reaches its peak at the flat top of the 600-million-year-old Table Mountain. Slowly sway 3,000ft up to the top in a cable car and watch out of the window as the city below you is transformed into a toy town and the mountain shifts to eye level. From the top you’ll see the Atlantic Ocean licking the golden beaches and the entire city in miniature below, like a detailed map.

Once back at the bottom, travel the coast-side Chapman’s Peak Drive which will lead you to the Cape of Good Hope - the most South West point of the African continent. From here, watch the drama of the waves smashing into the weather-beaten rock unfold. Another alternative view on the skyline-dominating rock faces can be enjoyed at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Head 13km out of the city centre to walk the park’s canopy walk, pausing to admire the 2,500 species of plant on display.

Visit the District City Museum to appreciate the city’s sad history. This former Methodist church plays homage to the multiracial community of this area that was destroyed during apartheid. More history can be soaked up along the V&A Waterfront. Stop for dinner here at one of the many seafood restaurants and enjoy one last eyeful of the giant lump of rock glowing under the falling sun.

Mossel Bay, around four hours from Cape Town is a worthy place to stop en route. It’s home to a tree which served as South Africa’s first post office. The Dias Museum Complex holds the history of the European sailors who journeyed here in the 15 th century.

5. Visit Durban

Spices on display at Durban's Victoria Street Market (Dreamstime)

Durban is South Africa at its most hip and cosmopolitan. The largest Indian community outside of India itself lives here, so expect an eclectic culture. The city centre is awash with myriad markets where you can find anything from Indian-inspired jewellery and spices at Victoria Street Market to traditional Zulu food such as slow boiled cow’s head at Bovine Head Market.

Escape the chaotic stools with a breezy walk along the Golden Mile and enjoy views over the long stretches of sands that gave this promenade its name or brave the waves and learn to surf.

Durban’s Botanic Gardens are also worthy of a visit, if only to set eyes on the beehive-like Butterfly Dome which is covered in butterfly-attracting flowers, causing a crowd of the beautiful flying insects.

The seaside town of Scottburgh is just a 45 minute drive from Durban. Head here for a chance to chill on the palm tree flanked beach or to learn to dive, and even swim with sharks.

6. Visit Johannesburg

Explore Maboneng (Dreamstime)

Explore Maboneng (Dreamstime)

South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg is home to one of the country’s most important historical sites, Constitutional Hill. This former prison has been transformed into four exhibitions, where you’ll learn the harrowing but important stories from the times when people were incarcerated here. Famous previous inmates include Nelson and Winnie Mandela and Ghandi.

Once the past has been honoured, move into modern, more positive times by exploring Maboneng, a hip neighbourhood east of Downtown that’s turned its turbulent past into a celebration of creativity. Among the café’s, you’ll find displays of local art along with huge murals painted on the sides of the buildings. Don’t miss Pretoria, South Africa’s capital, just north of Johannesburg where you can visit the Union Buildings, where Nelson Mandela was inaugurated.

Port Elizabeth is worth exploring (Shutterstock)

Ten hours south of Johannesburg is Port Elizabeth and is worth the detour. Take a boat tour to spot whales and rare seabirds or embark on the Donkin Heritage Trail which links 51 places of historical interest and architectural beauty.

7. Learn about community projects

Visit South Africa with TUI Tours

Be a part of and learn about some of the positive projects that have been created to help local communities. TUI Tours can take you to visit the Ecokidz project, which takes hundreds of children who live near Krueger National Park but can’t afford to visit, on a two-day trip to the park on their doorstep. The children can study the flora as well as enjoy sightings of the Big Five and Africa’s other incredible wildlife.  As well as this, the programme visits many local schools to teach vital and interactive lessons on nature and conservation.

Head to Sedgefield, on the Garden Route to see the Vukani Bead Project in action. The project was set up by a group of women as a way of funding their own families. Watch as members transform the colourful beads into various unique and intricate gifts. With the design often reflecting their African culture, these keyrings and items of jewellery make for great souvenirs and allows you to contribute to the project.

Watch the art of glassblowing (Shutterstock)

Learn another trade with a visit to the glass factory in Swaziland. Here, you can watch glass blowers at work, where everything they create is made from recycled materials.

8. Meet the locals

Visit a Zulu village (Shutterstock)

South Africa is often referred to as the ‘Rainbow Nation’ because of its huge cultural diversity. Boasting eleven official languages, there’s a lot of different customs, traditions and ways of life to learn about here. Meet Zulu people by heading to a village in the Lebommbo Mountains, in the northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal. Be welcomed into their community, learn about their way of life and listen to their fascinating stories about their history and culture.

Another way of understanding and seeing a more authentic side of South Africa is by choosing local guides. Whether going on a safari walk, hiking up many of the mountains or taking a tour of one of the cities, try and find a guide who grew up in the area. They will be able to show you places and tell you stories you’d struggle to find out for yourself.

Make sure you respect any local people you meet. Remember to smile, try and say hello in the local languae, and always ask permission before taking someone's picture.

9. Eat like a local

Enjoy a South African Braai (Shutterstock)

Discover south Africa with Tui Tours

South Africa’s cuisine has been heavily influenced by other cultures. Boerewor, for instance, is an intestine-like curl of pork and beef combined sausage that was first introduced to the nation when migrants from the Netherlands came over. Enjoy Boerewor barbequed on an authentic braai. In Phalaborwa, you can pull up a chair at the campfire and tuck into a Braai at sunset while discussing the top wildlife spots of the day, an experience TUI Tours can take you on. Alternatively, try a traditional boma in the mountain village of Mzuke, where barbeque is combined with evening entertainment from storytellers and singers under the stars.

Bunny chow is the country’s go-to takeaway option. The seaside town of Scottburgh is a good place to sample your first bowl of this Indian-inspired curry, served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread. You won’t be able to resist tearing off sides of the edible bowl to mop up the last of the spicy sauce.

Wash all of this down with a glass of world-famous wine. If you’re in Cape Town, head to Groot Constantina – the oldest wine-producing farm in all of South Africa. Here, you can sip wine while pairing it with chocolate and head inside the cellar to learn about the wine that’s been produced here since 1685.

If you have a sweet tooth, opt for the nations favourite treat, nougat. One of the best producers of this chewy delight is the Coach House Confectionary. Combine a visit with wildlife watching in Waterberg.

Lukimbi Safari Lodge

Relatively cheap when compared to other first world destinations.  Extraordinary scenery and wildlife.

South Africa has an enormous amount to offer.  For big 5 wildlife safaris, you'd want to be considering the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands Game Reserve.

For nightlife, restaurants and exquisite scenery spend a few days in Cape Town.

Cape Town is best between November and March when it's warm and not too windy.

The Kruger Park is best towards the end of winter, before it getstoo hot and you can easily see wildlife with the foliage having lost its leaves.

great service
This is to thank Leigh-Ann for her wonderful help with my safari booking. She always answers my questions quickly and provide solutions. Although I finally didn't book the trip because of a few constraints on my side, I'm sure that she is a nice person and it was enjoyable to receive her service.

Heleen feedback
Heleen was an absolute pleasure to deal with and is the person that has made me pass on Safari as a have to use when booking trips and putting a plan together. Heleen has been super responsive, informative and was more than happy to change things as needed throughout the process. We are a large group so nothing was simple but Heleen ensured we got accommodation together (as much as possible) and provided options for set ups too. It has been a pleasure to deal with Heleen and she is has given the company a fantastic reputation! Thank you so much again Heleen!

Leigh-Ann has been incredible…
Leigh-Ann has been incredible, I would highly recommend. First class service and response rates (even late at night with time difference). Very informative and recommended excellent hotel and tour options to make our trip unforgettable. All information was clear and easy payment links. A great way to help facilitate your trip, especially when there is SO much to choose from. Thank you again Leigh-Ann
I am very happy with the service I got…
I am very happy with the service I got from Safari.com. The booking agent was responsive and efficient, and managed to help us secure exactly the booking that we asked for.
Amazing tip from Jayson
A few years ago we had Jayson deal with a Safari tour we wanted arranged for our parents and so started our first contact with Safari.com and Jayson. Since our parents were so very pleased with their experience, we immediately thought of Jayson when my partner and myself stated planning a trip to Africa. Jayson remembered us from almost 4 years ago, which I think is rather outstanding. We booked a three night stay, on Jaysons recomendation, at the Wallow Lodge, which proved to be a wonerful experience. Apart from the lodge being everything you could possibly imagine, it was the staff that made our stay a wonderful experience. We would most certainly recommend the wallow Lodge should we hear of freinds wishing to visit the Victoria Falls. Thanks gos to safari.com, Jayson for organizing our trip and the wonderful staff of the Wallow Lodge at the Victoria Falls. Kindest Regards, Kristof

The on line rep I have been communicating with, Shann, is absolutely wonderful, in all respects. I threw many changes at her and she was always responsive, delivering requested information right away, and works long hours to suit clients in different time zones.

South Africa

South Africa

Nestled at the southern tip of africa lies a land of unparalleled beauty and diversity – south africa, holidays in south africa.

From the windswept shores and rolling savannahs to the rugged peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains, this vibrant nation is a treasure trove of natural wonders, cultural riches, and thrilling adventures waiting to be explored. A land of contrasts and contradictions, where modern skyscrapers stand side by side with ancient tribal villages, and where the call of the wild echoes through the bushveld; South Africa should be on everyone's holiday hit list. South Africa is a place where the past and present converge, creating a tapestry of experiences that will leave an indelible mark on your soul. So come, explore, and discover the magic of South Africa – the jewel of Africa awaits.

When is the best time to visit?: South Africa is a popular destination all year round, but the weather between November and March makes it a great place to head for a winter sunshine break. For the best wildlife viewings, June to September is considered an excellent period because the grass is shorter, lands are dryer, and animals gather around water sources in the absence of rain; making them easier to spot.

Where is the best place to stay in South Africa?: South Africa is often referred to as the Rainbow Nation, a testament to its rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions. So, there are many places holidayers stay to experience the rhythms of South Africa. From the family-friendly beaches and theme park of Durban to the romantic panoramas of Cape Winelands, there’s a place for everyone. However, for most Cape Town is the go-to destination- the perfect mix of activities, beaches, and city.

Travel guide

Star-studded night skies, towering mountains, and honey-hued lions framed against bleached sands; South Africa is packed with once-in-a-lifetime memories waiting to be made year-round.

Wildlife Wonderland

Wildlife Wonderland

For nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, South Africa is a paradise like no other. Embark on a safari adventure in Kruger National Park, one of Africa's largest game reserves, where you can spot the Big Five – lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes – in their natural habitat. Journey along the Garden Route, a scenic coastal drive that winds its way through forests, lagoons, and pristine beaches, offering opportunities to encounter dolphins, whales, and rare bird species. For the ultimate wildlife experience, head to the rugged coastline of the Eastern Cape, where you can witness the annual migration of whales and dive with great white sharks.

Adrenaline Adventures Await

Adrenaline Adventures Await

For adrenaline junkies and outdoor enthusiasts, South Africa offers a playground of adventure activities to suit every taste and skill level. Take on the challenge of scaling Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, or brave the world's highest commercial bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge. Go cage diving with crocodiles on the Zambezi River or paraglide over the picturesque vineyards of Stellenbosch.

Cape Town

Cape Town is one of those destinations that's packed with real once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Start by taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and marvelling at the spectacular views. Next, take a boat trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. See the local penguins at Boulders Beach or explore the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, where rows of pastel-coloured houses line the cobblestone streets. For those seeking a more leisurely pace, explore the picturesque wine regions of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, where you can sample award-winning wines and indulge in gourmet cuisine amidst stunning mountain scenery.

food and drink

Food & Drink

A foodie's paradise, in South Africa you'll be able to enjoy everything that your heart desires. Whether you're looking for gourmet dining or fast food, you're sure to find something to your taste in Cape Town. It's no surprise that seafood is a speciality in this harbour city. Enjoy everything from fish and chips by the quayside to a fresh seafood platter in an upscale restaurant. Try the unique Cape Malay cuisine with its exotic blend of herbs and spices. Meat eaters can sample ostrich, crocodile, and springbok meat – and wash it down with a glass of that famously good wine.

The thrill of seeing Africa’s Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards and rhinos – draws visitors from around the world to South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Yet within a few miles of the park live hundreds of children whose families cannot afford to do the same; to make the short trip to see the beautiful creatures who roam practically on their doorstep. Now, with the help of TUI Care Foundation, these children are finally being given that opportunity.

south africa safari holidays tui

Ecokidz and the wonders of wildlife

The Sefapane Community Development Fund organises a two-day adventure in the park for 400 schoolchildren each year. Not only do they experience the delight of seeing some of the world’s finest creatures close at hand, they also learn about Africa’s flora and fauna and why preserving and respecting the natural environment is so important.

In addition, 1,550 children in villages around the park now learn about nature and conservation at school through an interactive programme. Sefapane Ecokidz Kruger National Park, as the programme is known, isn’t just a one-off session. It’s become an integral part of the curriculum.

Project partner

Sefapane Community Development Fund is founded by Sefapane Lodge and Safaris to make a sustainable contribution to the communities around Phalaborwa. The fund focuses on local disadvantaged youth, with a focus on environmental education and sports.

Seychelles

Uganda

Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, according to Winston Churchill.  And for good reason.  Uganda offers stunning scenery with gems of opportunity.  It is in Uganda you can see world's highest concentration of primates including the much endangered Mountain Gorilla, chimpanzees and golden monkeys.

Ultimate Safari and Beach Adventures

Africa is a large and diverse continent. Traditional safaris are in east Africa: Tanzania, Kenya and southern Africa: Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa. Making the choice between these countries largely depends on what you’re looking for, how long you’ve got and how much you want to spend.

In a snapshot: Tanzania: famous parks including the Ngorongoro Crater and the wide open plains of the Serengeti from where to witness the great wildebeest migration. A Tanzania safari is easily combinable with beach time in Zanzibar making it an ideal safari & beach destination. Or challenge yourself to climb Kilimanjaro. Kenya: the home of safari with popular Maasai Mara and beautiful Amboseli in the shadow of mount Kilimanjaro and remote northern parks. Beware of mass tourism. Good links to Kenya Coast and Zanzibar. Botswana: famed for Okavango Delta streaming with wildlife and luxury camp options. Very combinable with South Africa. South Africa: Kruger National Park and many concessions in more controlled safari environment with malaria free options. Add Capetown and Winelands for an amazing single country holiday. Or take a short flight to Mauritius for a beach fix. Zambia: Victoria Falls and safari in pristine wilderness. Great for walking safaris. See also Namibia famous for its dunes and abstract desert wilderness, Rwanda for gorilla trekking and Mozambique or Seychelles for beach escapism.

Safari and Beach operate throughout Sub-Sahara Africa but where and what we recommend largely depends on what you’d like to do. A safari and beach honeymoon can be very different to a family safari holiday. Likewise, adventure, trekking, diving, riding add a different spin.

Safari Holidays

Once-in-a-lifetime safari holidays in africa.

Explore has over 35 years' experience in creating ground-breaking safari holidays to Africa's most iconic national parks and wildlife reserves. There is no better continent than Africa for the wildlife enthusiast. From primates to predators, from the spectacle of the wildebeest migration to the miracle of the Okavango Delta, the Mother Continent always delivers wildlife in abundance, dramatic landscapes and the best wilderness experience. However, Africa is no doubt an immense continent and encompasses an incredible variety of ecosystems, so making a decision on where to travel, can be rather challenging.  A safari holiday in Botswana provides many with the ultimate 'off the beaten track' wilderness experience. Its low impact policy means that the numbers of visitors are strictly monitored, which gives a sense of real privilege to those who venture in to this remote territory. Miraculously in the heart of the Kalahari - one of the most inhospitable, vast and arid deserts on the planet - is one of the richest wetland habitats: the Okavango Delta. This sophisticated system of intricate canals, waterways, lagoons and grasslands is home to some outstanding wildlife and can be explored by 4WD, canoe or even from a house boat. Safaris in Kenya offer world-renowned game reserves, most famously the Maasai Mara. Visit between July and October to witness the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores migrate from the Serengeti to the grasslands of the Maasai Mara. Kenya is also home to Nakuru National Park, famous for its population of black rhino, and the Aberdare Mountains, which boasts spectacular views of Mount Kenya.   Namibia is popular for its deserts, canyons, enormous sand dunes and dramatic coastline and also features an enormous wildlife sanctuary, Etosha National Park.  Waterholes and huge salt pans are the main landmarks in the park and form an excellent backdrop for its prolific wildlife: zebra, antelopes, giraffe, rhino and of course, the big cats. A South African safari tour always visits Kruger National Park. This iconic park has enabled generations of travellers to observe the “big five” from close-up, while the Western Cape is the best place to see humpback whales and even penguins!

Safari holiday FAQs

Which is the best safari destination.

Every safari destination has it's own incredible things to see and do, but the best one for you will depend on what you're looking for. Here are a few examples of the best safari destinations for different types of traveller:

  • Great for first-timers - the Maasai Mara, Kenya
  • Great for safari buffs - Etosha National Park, Namibia
  • Great for families - Kruger National Park, South Africa
  • Great for bird-watchers - the Cape, South Africa
  • Great for couples - Okavango Delta Panhandle, Botswana

To find out more, visit our How to choose where to go on safari blog .

Where can I see the Big Five animals?

The Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) are among the most famous species in the Animal Kingdom. Here are the best safari destinations to spot them:

  • South Africa - Kruger National Park
  • Tanzania - Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater
  • Namibia - Etosha National Park and Waterberg Plateau Park
  • Botswana - Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park
  • Kenya - Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Learn more in our Best African safari destinations to spot the Big 5 blog .

Why should I go on a small group tour for my safari holiday?

There is no better continent than African for wildlife enthusiasts. Our safari itineraries are expertly designed to take you to the best places for an unforgettable safari experience, at the best times of the year. Our small group tours take you into the heart of the national parks, with game drives at the best times of the day to spot the wildlife. Our local leaders have expert knowledge of the animals, including how to track them so you can get up close. We include unique accommodation in prime locations to immerse you in the animal kingdom (whilst also keeping you safe of course). Our accommodation includes houseboats in the Okavango Delta Panhandle where you'll be surrounded by water-dwelling wildlife and exotic birds, and safari lodges and camps within the national parks where you can sleep under the stars and listen to the wildlife around you. Choose a small group tour for your safari and you are guaranteed an incredible wildlife-watching experience.

Is a safari tour suitable for solo travellers?

Yes, definitely! All our small group tours , including our once-in-a-lifetime safari holidays, are perfect for solo holidays . You'll be joined by like-minded people in an average group size of around 11, and you'll have an expert local leader to scout out the animals and give you the best wildlife experience.

What is a typical day on a safari holiday?

On a safari with Explore you will generally wake up early and be on a game drive as soon as the sun rises. This is the best time to be out on safari in Africa as the animals are still active before the heat of the day sets in. As it gets hot, you will return to camp to have brunch and can take time to discuss the morning's wildlife sightings and like the animals, have a snooze. In the late afternoon as the heat subsides our groups usually get back in our vehicles to head out for a few more hours of safari.

What are the safari vehicles like?

Our vehicles for game drives are built for off road conditions and provide great viewing opportunities for visitors hoping to see some of the exotic animals that can be found in Africa. You should expect some rugged roads and wild conditions; it is in these real wilderness settings that we experience the best wildlife sightings. Your vehicles will normally have 4x4, roof hatches and a cool box for late afternoon sundowners.

When is the best time of year to go on a safari trip?

This depends on where you're going and what you want to see. We only run tours when it’s a good time to visit, but there may be specific wildlife you want to see and there will be better times to see certain species, largely due to migrations. If you don't like really hot temperatures, find out when the weather is cooler in your safari destination.

What should I wear on a safari holiday?

Most people expect Africa to be hot but it can be cold at times, particularly early in the morning and late at night. Pack layers, including a warm fleece or jacket. Neutral colours like khaki and green are best when on safari, but they’re not essential. Try to avoid wearing white though, as this will catch the attention of animals the most. Protect yourself from the sun with a hat and sunglasses. Dust can also be a problem in the dry months, so sunglasses will protect your eyes. A lightweight bandana is good to wear, as you can pull it up to protect your face when the dust flies. Get more advice in our 7 tips for your first African safari blog.

What should I pack for a safari?

  • Neutral coloured, lightweight clothing - long-sleeved shirts and long trousers
  • Warm clothing for cooler mornings and evenings
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • A lightweight bandana to protect your face from dust
  • Insect repellent
  • Waterbottle
  • Camera and equipment, including a bag or pouch and a cloth or similar to protect it from dust
  • Torch or head torch
  • Anti-malarial tablets (depending on where you're going, ask your GP or local travel clinic)
