AmaKristina Wiki

APT AmaKristina boat is among company's newest river cruise ships of the modified Concerto-class, with sisterships AmaLea (2018), AmaLucia (2021), AmaMora (2019), AmaSiena (2020), AmaStella (2016), AmaViola (2016). This is a new APT riverboat design featuring the "Twin Balcony" stateroom concept. It combines the traditional French Balcony with a second (covered, step-out) open-air verandah for all-weather use. Each of these riverboats is powered by two "Caterpillar" marine diesel engines (model "C32 DITA ACERT" V-12, total power output 1900 kW / 2550 HP).

AmaWaterways' 20th riverboat was christened on May 10, 2017, in Lahnstein. The boat’s godmother is Mrs Kristin Karst - AmaWaterways company's Co-Owner and Executive Vice President. The naming ceremony coincided with the company's 15th-anniversary year.

Vessel's construction (hull and superstructure, ENI number 07002053) was done at the Vahali Shipyard in Zasavica (Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia). The 1923-founded Dutch shipbuilding company (Scheepswerf En Machinefabriek Vahali BV) owns and operates yards in Serbia ( Belgrade , and Zasavica) and in Holland (Gendt). Vahali Shipyard Zasavica was officially opened in 2013. Following the construction in Serbia, the AmaKristina ship was towed to Holland for final outfitting at Scheepswerf Vahali (Gendt).

All AMAwaterways ships provide complimentary bicycles (stored on the boat's sundeck) on shore excursions/tours in each port along the cruise itineraries.

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises  hub. All companies and their fleets are listed there.

Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection Chair, CLIA Trade Relations Committee

Tell us about your career in the travel industry. how did you start out what attracted you to travel .

I’ve been in the travel industry just about my entire adult life. After graduating from High School with an entire summer before college started, my mother suggested that I find a job and “be productive.” In the summer of 1988, for $4.77 an hour, I started working part time, loading bags onto airplanes on the ramp for Continental Airlines. At first, it was just a “job” but it wasn’t too long before I caught the travel bug and realized that I could fly all over the world. I guess it was those early days that really instilled in me an appreciation for travel and exploration that’s still with me today.

You’ve been at the sales helm of Uniworld since 2016. What have been some of the highlights of your first two years?

The very first thing that attracted to me Uniworld is the incredible beauty of the brand experience. Uniquely distinctive, culturally immersive with a relentless commitment to exceptional and anticipatory service that I haven’t seen anywhere else. Simply stated, it really is one-of-a-kind. Since joining Uniworld in 2016, we’ve implemented several industry-supportive resources. From growing our field sales team to one of the largest in the river cruise industry and developing our inside sales and support team as an additional layer of support. The combined team has been designed to enhance our level of access and support for Travel Advisors. We also redesigned a new Travel Advisor page on the www.Uniworld.com website under Advisor Resources that, in addition to offering collateral, sales support and other tools, also includes Uniworld University, the one source for all things related to learning about Uniworld. These efforts, and so many more have really supported the continuing partnership we have with our Travel Advisor partners and have generated record breaking success for the company.

What trends are you seeing in the business?

One trend that continues to grow stronger is the desire for experiencing a destination as opposed to simply relaxing in one. People want to explore. To borrow a phrase, they’re now comfortable getting out of their comfort zone. The lure of the authentic and the unique is now more of a determining factor for their next holiday than ever before. Of course, it’s hard to find a better way to do this outside of a cruise. At Uniworld, we pride ourselves on the immersive, authentic experience. Whether it’s the destination inspired elegant décor of our ships and cuisine or the diversely enriching destinations we visit, the reaction from our guest is always the same… they want more!

What advice would you give a travel advisor who aspires to sell luxury products?

Qualify your client, don’t be intimated and don’t make assumptions. You might be surprised how many clients book a simple vacation on a beach in Cancun not because of finances but because of a lack of any inspired alternatives. Thats why the benefit of using Travel Advisor is so apparent. When it comes to moving a client toward a luxury experience, the best thing a Travel Advisor can do is to develop a relationship with their local DSM/BDM who can assist them through the entire process.

In your role as chair of the CLIA Trade Relations Committee you lead your colleagues from all CLIA Cruise Lines in empowering travel agencies and advisors to grow their cruise business. What has been your experience in steering this important group?

Working with the CLIA team and member suppliers as part of the TRC has been a really rewarding experience on so many levels. Personally, its provided greater insight as to the incredible amount of hard work, research, planning and coordination that goes into everything CLIA does for its members and the industry. We’re able to speak with one voice, enhancing the efforts being made to support and educate Travel Advisors on all things cruise. Did I mention this was with “one voice”? It’s not very common to see all cruise lines come together under almost any circumstance and CLIA is maybe the only place that happens!

What gives you the greatest professional satisfaction?

Perhaps my greatest professional satisfaction, and it’s not easy to have just one, is the nurturing process when a new to luxury, new to river cruising Travel Advisor embarks on the journey of becoming and selling that experience. Seeing this process happen from the initial stages of educational awareness, on to perhaps their first hand experience through a FAM trip or partnering with the BDM/DSM through marketing efforts… witnessing and being a part of the process and seeing a Travel Advisor who had never sold a luxury river cruise such as Uniworld become a significant producer of FIT or even groups is incredibly rewarding. This isn’t some sort of random “PR” cliché for me…. This is something I’ve experienced time and again, and every time I do it reaffirms my sincere belief in the power of partnership!

Now for a little fun… what has been your most memorable personal cruise experience?

To those who know me, it won’t come as a surprise that the inaugural cruise of Uniworld’s Supership Joie de Vivre, which departs from Paris and sails on the Seine to Normandy, was an experience that I’ll never forget. The ship itself is without question the most beautiful river ship in the industry today, but to see Paris, Normandy and the French countryside the way Uniworld is able to share it made it even more remarkable than I could’ve imagined.

Lomaristeilyt.

Tutustu matkoihin:

Lomaristeilyt lyhyesti.

  • Lomaristeilylaivat ovat selvästi kookkaampia kuin jokiristeilylaivat. Niihin majoittuu yleensä noin 2000 matkustajaa. Samalla laivat tarjoavat monipuolisia ruokailu- ja vapaa- ajanviettomahdollisuuksia.
  • Useita kohteita matkan aikana. Viikon risteilyllä käydään yleensä 5-7 kaupunkikohteessa.
  •  Meripäivinä on aikaa rentoutua. Osa matkantekoa on myös nautiskelu laivan palveluista, joihin tarjoutuu oiva tilaisuus vaikkapa meripäivänä, joita on yleensä yksi viikon risteilyllä.
  • Helppoa matkantekoa.

A mass shooting survivor's story

October 8, 2017 / 10:22 AM EDT / CBS News

If anyone is qualified to offer counsel and comfort to the thousands who narrowly escaped death in last weekend's Las Vegas shooting, it would be someone who's been through a similar close call. Lee Cowan has a survivor's story:

Kristina Anderson was 19 years old when she was carried out of her French class at Virginia Tech in April 2007 -- shot twice in the back, and once in the foot by a troubled student who killed 32 others, and wounded 16 .

Virginia Tech was the nation's deadliest mass shooting -- until it lost that grim distinction to Orlando last year … which in turn was overtaken by Las Vegas this past Sunday night.

"Your brain is numb for about two years, I would say," Anderson said. "You're kind of fuzzy. And memories are not fully-formed because your brain is going through a sense of, 'Wait, am I safe yet? Am I okay?'"

Las Vegas music festival shooting

"The hard parts are not always immediately after the shooting or the tragedy, because people reach out and you have a lot of attention from the media and local resources," she said. "The hard part is nine months afterwards. There's a level of fear and loneliness that's really hard to prepare for."

GALLERY: Las Vegas shooting victims

From her hospital room, healing was first on the agenda -- the same task ahead for so many survivors in Las Vegas. But physical and mental healing, she warns, can be on vastly different schedules.

virginia-tech-shooting-survivor-kristina-anderson-promo.jpg

"For the first five years after the shooting, I thought about the event every single day. Something would trigger, and I would lose anywhere from ten minutes to 30 minutes, depending on how severe that trigger was."

"You would just break down?" Cowan asked.

"It's not always even breaking down. Sometimes you just disassociate with the place. So I would almost feel like I would rise up over the situation, so if in a classroom, I would tune out of the conversation. My heart would rise, my pulse would start beating, and the worst part about this was that I didn't know that was happening -- someone walked in late and that scared me, or the door slammed and that scared me. I couldn't connect the why."

Years of working with a therapist helped. But she's found the most help from those who've been there -- the survivors of other mass shootings, all members of a club no one willingly joins, but its membership continues to grow.

"We talk about how awkward other people are around us, or how funny sometimes certain media questions are," Anderson said. "And we bounce off ideas.   Have you ever had this? How did you respond to this? Or This person said this. Because sometimes people in your close family and friends also don't do well with what happened to you, and so they may say things that are actually really hurtful or do things that are not really thoughtful, unintentionally."

Especially around anniversaries, Anderson says. Hers is every April 16th. Those can be the hardest of all.

Mourners Marks 1st Anniversary Of Orlando Pulse Nightclub Mass Shooting

"I mentally start to be kinder to myself in the month of March," she said. "So I exercise more, I try to sleep more, I try to be a little bit kinder to myself in my work commitments."

"Just because you knew what was coming was going to be hard?"

"I'm just naturally more anxious the entire month of April, because your mind knows that something is coming and your body starts to feel it," she said. "So you're more tired, I'm more reactive. I'm much more emotional because I'm brought back to this pretty painful reminder that I almost died.

"And you're really confronted with a sense of, Am I doing the things for the right reasons? Have I been really great to my parents lately? Because you know, ten years ago, they almost lost me."

Using money that arrived tucked inside get-well cards a decade ago, Anderson started a foundation. She lives in Seattle now, and criss-crosses the country speaking about school and workplace safety.

That's how she's coping.

She says the Vegas survivors -- some 22,000 of them -- will find their path, too: "The hard part is accepting it, that you'll never go back to how you were that day before your shooting."

Cown asked, "Is there that obligation that people are going to feel that if they did survive, that they should talk about it, or they should do the kinds of things that you're doing?"

"The obligation is to live a better life," she smiled. "The obligation is that you've lived and you've felt, you've seen the fact that not everyone gets to go home to their children and to their spouses, and that life is short. And that the best way you can honor what happened is to be authentic to yourself."

RESEARCH PROFILE

Kristina Andersen is associate professor at the Future Everyday cluster of the Department of Industrial Design. Her work is concerned with how we can allow each other to imagine our possible technological futures through digital craftsmanship and collaborations with semi intelligent machines in the context of material practices of soft fiber-based things. How can we innovate, design and act around that which is yet to be imagined? Who gets to drive innovation processes? And how can we reframe our methodologies to include the complex cultural, political, and personal aspects of life? Can we approach this through making (and thinking) about technology, communities and materials as a way to construct visions of the unknown?
