Kool & The Gang is set to celebrate 60 years as R&B and funk veterans in 2024. However, ahead of that monumental feat, the group is releasing a new album and will be embarking on an international tour .
People Just Wanna Have Fun is slated for release on July 14, towards the end of their 17-city tour.
Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest, Dionne Warwick, And More Inducted Into Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
George “Funky” Brown, fellow founding member and producer of the LP, added insight on the process during the height of the pandemic . “It’s all done live. Nothing was flown in. We made sure we had the ultraviolet lights and the sprays and the masks. Nobody got sick. We kept the number of people in the studio way down,” stated the 74-year-old.
The album’s lead single, “Let’s Party,” debuted back in October, but an Afrobeats remix is premiering on April 21. Both Bell and Brown view this project—the group’s 34th album—as a “summation of their long career” as it will be some of the last work from the band’s members, Ronald “Khalis” Bell and Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, who passed in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Since their start in 1964, the group has garnered two GRAMMYs, seven American Music Awards, a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award , and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Plus, Kool’s bass guitar is featured in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC and their 1980 hit, “Celebration” was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2021 along with Janet Jackson’s Control , Labelle’s “ Lady Marmalade ,” and Nas’ Illmatic .

SUNDAY HEADLINER REVEALED: Kool & The Gang
Plus nubiyan twist, cherise, craig charles, tickets on sale friday 8 december 2023, 10am., more acts to be announced soon.
Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival have revealed their first artists for 2024’s festival.
US pioneers Kool & The Gang, DJ Craig Charles, Leeds/London collective Nubiyan Twist and emerging songwriter Cherise are among the artists who’ll be making their way to Birmingham for the acclaimed annual festival – which runs from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 July 2024.
After playing together for several years under various names, Kool & The Gang officially launched in 1969. Performing a blend of jazz, funk and soul, the Jersey City natives made an impact with such tracks as Jungle Boogie and Funky Stuff , going on to amass over 20 UK chart singles, including Ladies Night, Too Hot, Celebration, Get Down On It, Steppin’ Out, and Joanna. They’ve also appeared on numerous film soundtracks (including the mega-selling Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction albums), while key cuts have been sampled by everyone from Madonna, Janet Jackson and Lady Gaga, to Jay-Z, Dre, 2Pac and Nas.
Kool & The Gang’s headline spot closes the festival on Sunday night.
The ‘Maestro of Funk’, DJ Craig Charles (Sunday) is a firm Mostly favourite, with appearances at the festival stretching back to 2011. His regular sets are guaranteed to push the party vibe up a level (or two) as he drops massive hits and cult bangers. An actor, poet and presenter, Charles’ regular BBC 6Music show has been a mainstay of the station since it launched, and sees the DJ champion the very best in soul and funk, with classic tracks, new releases and sessions.
Drawing on jazz, hip-hop, Afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae and dance music, the nine-piece Nubiyan Twist (Sunday) are renowned for their thrilling musicianship. Lead by Tom Excell, the band are currently preparing for the release of their fourth album (due spring 2024), which features the track So Mi Stay and marks a significant evolution for the group, adding Patois and R&B vocals to their sound.
Named by Clash magazine as “one of the women raising the bar for Soul and Jazz in the UK”, Cherise (Sunday) is a much sought-after emerging young soul singer and songwriter. Having previously collaborated with Nubiyan Twist, the former Jazz FM Vocalist Of The Year recently released her debut album, Calling – a collection of emotive, and deeply moving explorations of family, romantic love and growing into your truest self.
Discussing the announcement, John Fell, Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival Manager said: “We can’t wait to see Kool & The Gang close 2024’s festival. With a back catalogue that spans over 50 years and includes everything from smooth pop hits to dirty funk, they’re one of the pioneers of R&B/jazz, and have had a huge influence on music.
“With Nubiyan Twist, Cherise and Craig all joining us too, 2024’s festival is already shaping up to be a great line-up.
“Look out for further artist exciting additions in the New Year, including a few surprises.”
Set in the idyllic Moseley Park, just two miles outside of Birmingham city centre, Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival has built a strong reputation for presenting iconic and up-and-coming artists in an intimate outdoor setting.

Kool & the Gang has influenced the music of three generations and, at the age of 53, the band has become true recording industry legends.
Thanks to iconic songs like Celebration, Cherish, Jungle Boogie, Summer Madness and Open Sesame, they've earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, 9 Top Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums.
From Nairobi to Newark, Kool & the Gang has performed continuously longer than any R&B group in history and their bulletproof funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled R&B band of all time. A reviewer recently called their performance "a 24-karat show" and every year, even after a half-century on the road, yields a non-stop schedule of shows across the globe.

Cher, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest among 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees
Cher finally recognised 60 years after her first recordings, while Mary J Blige, Peter Frampton and Dave Matthews Band are among the other inductees
Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J Blige and A Tribe Called Quest are among the stars to be added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year – many of them rather overdue.
Artists can be added to the US institution 25 years after their first recording, but Cher – who once described her snub by the Hall as “kind of rude” – has had to wait until 60 years after her first releases with Sonny & Cher to be included.
Peter Frampton is another artist who has had a long wait. After debuting in 1972, and scoring one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s in the US with Frampton Comes Alive!, the 74-year-old British artist has eventually been added this year.
Osbourne had already been inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, but now has a second entry acknowledging a solo career that began with 1980 album Blizzard of Ozz. A Tribe Called Quest, one of the foundational groups in hip-hop, are acknowledged 34 years on from their debut album, while Blige, who has topped the US album chart four times, is included after 32 years.
Other inductees include Dave Matthews Band, who have enjoyed a multiplatinum-selling career that began in 1994, racking up seven No 1 albums in a row between 1998 and 2018.
I Want to Know What Love Is hitmakers Foreigner have also been added, acknowledging a career that has resulted in almost 40m album sales in the US. Rounding out the 2024 inductees are the funk, disco and pop band Kool & the Gang. Best known for hits such as Get Down on It and the US No 1 Celebration, they began back in 1969 but continue to tour and released their latest album in 2023.
The Hall’s musical excellence award is this year given to Jimmy Buffett , who died in September 2023; MC5, whose guitarist and bandleader Wayne Kramer died in February; and soul icons Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield. The musical influence award is given to three blues artists: American singer Big Mama Thornton, plus British performers Alexis Korner and John Mayall.
The Ahmet Ertegun award is given to Suzanne de Passe, a media mogul who rose through the ranks at Motown Records to become president of its film and TV arm, before spinning it off into a successful production company under her own name.
The year’s diverse range – by Rock Hall standards – of inductees comes as the Hall attempts to broaden its canon of artists. Last year, it was calculated that fewer than 10% of inductees have been women since the awards began in 1986.
“The Rock Hall’s canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility,” Courtney Love wrote in a 2023 Guardian op-ed. “If so few women are being inducted into the Rock Hall, then the nominating committee is broken. If so few Black artists, so few women of colour, are being inducted, then the voting process needs to be overhauled.”
In 2010, Cher described the snub of Sonny & Cher as “kind of rude … We influenced a generation, and it’s like: what more do you want?” After scoring era-defining hits such as I Got You Babe, Cher went on to a solo career that flourished through a series of reinventions, including her embrace of Europop in 1998 with global hit Believe. Aged 77, she continues to release new music, with a Christmas album coming out in 2023.
Meanwhile, the Hall of Fame’s accompanying museum in Cleveland is planning a $135m expansion. Announced in 2023 and with an estimated completion date of early 2026, it will increase the museum’s size by a third.

Getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a incredible career high for the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige. However, the 53-year-old could be ending her career on a high note.
Blige will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame alongside Foreigner , Jimmy Buffett , Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang and more on Oct. 19. While Blige is about to receive one of the biggest honors in the music industry, the songstress is gearing up for retirement in the near future.
In an exclusive interview with Extra , the 9-time Grammy winner opened up about her future plans, saying, “Right now, I’m definitely gonna do some more acting and I’m definitely gonna retire in, like, five or six years.”
The R&B icon, who has also had a fruitful acting career, later clarified that she was just looking to step away from making music.
“Right now, I’m still doing what I’m doing but not as often as I was doing it because I don’t have to now,” Blige told Extra.

Blige has been credited with influencing the musical marriage of hip hop and R&B and praised for her emotionally charged lyrics and stage presence.
The multi-platinum singer rose to fame in 1992 with the release of her debut album, “What’s the 411?,” which is credited for introducing the mix of R&B and hip hop into the mainstream music scene.
Blige saw continued success with her follow-up effort, “My Life,” released in 1994, as well as several platinum and gold albums throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Blige has released 14 studio albums over the course of her career, four of which topped the Billboard 200.
Her biggest hits include “Real Love”, “You Remind Me”, “I’m Goin’ Down”, “Not Gon’ Cry”, “Be Without You”, “Just Fine” and the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “Family Affair.”
Rolling Stone also ranked her as the 25th greatest singer of all-time in 2013.

Neil Young Stuns at 2024 Tour Launch, Unveils Lost ‘Cortez the Killer’ Verse
By Andy Greene
Andy Greene
In typical Neil Young fashion, virtually nothing was revealed about his 2024 U.S. tour before it kicked off Wednesday night at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, other than the fact he’d be backed by Crazy Horse , and that Micah Nelson would be taking over guitar duties from Nils Lofgren. Would he pull a Greendale and debut an entire rock opera nobody had ever heard? Would he focus the set around the three new studio albums he cut with Crazy Horse between 2019 and 2022? Might he repeat the concept of his 2023 solo tour by spotlighting obscure Eighties and Nineties album tracks and skipping most of his hits?
They jammed for six minutes before Young sang the opening lines, igniting the crowd into a frenzy, but the big moment came near the end, when he began singing completely unfamiliar words. As he teased earlier this month , it was the legendary lost segment of the song that failed to record during the 1975 Zuma sessions because the console briefly lost power. Young recently found the lyric manuscript, and worked out where they originally fit in the song.
“I floated on the water,” Young sang. “I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there’s no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.”
It was a remarkable moment to witness. After 49 years and over 540 live performances, the world finally got to hear the song as Young originally wrote it.

Young was talking about “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’),” from 1996’s Broken Arrow, which was the newest song they played all evening. The rest of the set was music recorded when Briggs was alive, largely between 1969 and 1979, beginning with “Don’t Cry No Tears.” He followed it up with a triple shot of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere : “Down by the River,” “The Losing End,” and the title track. And it was a particularly mesmerizing “Down by the River” that stretched out for 16 blissful minutes.

After the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere mini-set, the quartet (Crazy Horse 4.0?) kicked into one of the greatest renditions of “Powderfinger” I’ve ever heard, thanks to improvisational guitar work prior to each verse by Young and Nelson. What came next was a 16-minute “Love and Only Love,” the band walking offstage, and then Young strapping on an harmonica rack for solo acoustic renditions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold,” and “Human Highway” that had the entire amphitheater singing along.
The band returned to wrap up the night with “Don’t Be Denied,” an autobiographical tale that carries a lot more emotional weight when Young sings it at age 78 as opposed to 28, and a thrashed-out “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).”
Trump’s Team Has a Plan to Ensure He Doesn’t Go to Jail for Violating Gag Order
Kendrick did everything he needed to on ‘euphoria’, ted cruz wants airlines to keep your cash when they cancel your flight, billie eilish would like to reintroduce herself.
He might duplicate this exact set when the tour continues the following night at the same venue. He might not repeat a single song. He may even perform a complete classic album, which is something he started doing late last year. The joy of seeing Neil Young is that you never have any idea what’s going to happen once the lights dim.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 inductees include Peter Frampton, Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige
This year’s other inductees include Foreigner, Kool & The Gang and A Tribe Called Quest. Honorees in the Musical Excellence and Musical Influence categories included Dionne Warwick, MC5, John Mayall and Jimmy Buffett.

After failing to even be nominated in previous years, Cher, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Kool & The Gang will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, alongside repeat nominees Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band and hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest.
In a novel move, Frampton encouraged concertgoers to vote for him during his April 14 show at The Shell in San Diego by having the QR code for the ballot projected onto the large video screen behind him on stage.
Five other artists who were also on the ballot for the first time this year did not earn enough votes to be inducted, specifically, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Sadé, Mariah Carey and Sinéad O’Connor, who died last July. Also failing to make the cut for induction were two repeat nominees — Jane’s Addiction and the hip-hop duo Erik B. & Rakim.
Appreciation: Sinead O’Connor, dead at 56, was a singular artist: ‘I would have liked to be a priest,’ she told us in 2013
‘I would like to be remembered,’ she told us, ‘as a loving mother and grandmother. I’d like to be the rocking-est granny! I’d like to go out like (pioneering blues and rock singer) Big Mama Thornton.’

This year’s inductees were announced during Sunday night’s telecast of “American Idol” by Lionel Richie, a 2022 hall inductee, and show host Ryan Seacrest. The list of 2024 honorees also includes six artists who will receive the hall’s Musical Excellence and Musical Influence awards, two categories that are chosen by the hall’s in-house committees.
The 2024 Musical Excellence Award honorees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Jimmy Buffett (who died last September from cancer) and the pioneering Detroit proto-punk-rock band MC5, whose leader, Wayne Kramer, died of cancer Feb. 2. The final iteration of the group, which included San Diego guitarist Stevie Salas playing alongside fellow guitarist Kramer, toured in 2022.

MC5 had been nominated for induction in six previous years but did not earn enough votes to gain induction. Buffett, whose final concert of his career with his Coral Reefer Band took place last May at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, was never nominated.
Jimmy Buffett, dead at 76: His final concert with his band was on May 6 in San Diego. Here’s our review.
Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band headlined the first-ever concert at Snapdragon Stadium. His death was announced just a few days after the San Diego opening of the Buffett-themed Margaritaville hotel

This year’s Musical Influence Award honorees include England’s John Mayall and the late Alexis Korner, who in the 1960s jointly spearheaded the blues boom in the UK that fueled the launching of such bands as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. At 90, Mayall appears to be the oldest of this year’s hall honorees.

Cream and Fleetwood Mac are just some of the bands whose members found their feet playing in Mayall’s famed band, The Bluesbreakers
Dec. 5, 2021
The third 2024 Musical Influence Award honoree is the late Big Mama Thornton, whose galvanizing recordings of the songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” greatly influenced the subsequent versions of those songs by, respectively, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin.
Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording and are honored for their “originality, impact and influence.” Ballots are cast by the hall’s more than 1,000 voting members, which include previous inductees and an array of music industry professionals, including this writer.
In 2013, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduced it “fan vote,” in which the top five nominees that fans vote online for are submitted as one official ballot that is counted with the rest of the Voting Committee’s. The quantitative impact of the fans’ choices is minimal — accounting for about 0.3 percent of the total — but creates a fair amount of buzz.
This year’s two top fan-vote earners are Dave Matthews Band (with 586,745 votes) and Frampton, with 529,077. This year’s online fan voting was supposed to continue until Friday, but instead concluded April 15.
The hall’s final 2024 honoree, powerhouse music, film and TV industry executive Suzanne de Passe, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. It is named after the co-founder of Atlantic Records.
The announcement of this year’s inductees comes as several of them are battling serious medical conditions.

The veteran musician, who plays Sunday at San Diego’s Rady Shell, is on the ballot for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time this year, despite having been eligible since the 1990s

Frampton, 73, has an autoimmune disease called inclusion body myositis that affects his muscle control and sense of balance. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2019, after falling several times on stage. He now walks with a cane, performs while seated and has lost some control of his fingers.
Osbourne, 75, rose to fame as the lead singer in the heavy-metal band Black Sabbath before launching his solo career in 1980. He suffered a serious fall in 2019, has since undergone four spinal surgeries and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003.

Ozzy Osbourne is ticked off that people think he’s set to retire after his ongoing farewell tour, although that’s not the precise terminology he would use.

Mick Jones, the 79-year-old founder of the band Foreigner, disclosed his own Parkinson’s diagnosis in February of this year. He cites his condition as the reason he no longer tours with his group. Foreigner’s farewell tour includes a June 28 show at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Mick Jones is understandably proud that his band, Foreigner, sold more than 80 million albums worldwide between the release of its self-titled 1977 debut album and 1987’s “Inside Information.”
July 25, 2018
Fellow 2024 Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang will perform June 24 in San Diego at The Shell. Bassist and band founder Robert “Kool” Bell is the only surviving member still on tour with the group.
The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the following day. An edited airing of the ceremony will be broadcast on ABC at a later date.
Cher may command the spotlight at the induction ceremony — should she choose to attend.
In December — two months before the 2024 nominees were announced — the 77-year-old singer blasted the hall for never having made her a nominee despite her having been eligible to be on the ballot since 1990.
“You know what? I wouldn’t be in it (the hall) now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher said during a telecast of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
“I’m not kidding you,” Cher continued. “I was about to say something else. … I was about to say I’m not sh-ting you. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”
