Tour description

Spend one perfect day exploring venice’s charming islands and enjoying vip treatment..

This Murano & Burano tour takes you away from the crowds of central Venice to the city's outlying islands, bursting with authentic history and culture. Explore Burano and Murano by private boat, complete with an exclusive wine tasting at a Michelin Star restaurant and a private glassblowing demonstration.

Say buongiorno to your guide and small group in central Venice, then enjoy a short walk through a picturesque neighborhood to your boat to begin your Murano & Burano tour. You’ll make a brief stop along the way for a photo op at one of Venice’s most recognizable spots.

Once aboard the private boat, you’ll slip away from the city center and catch breathtaking views from the water. Pass by legendary sights such as St. Mark’s Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Throughout the pleasant hour-long ride, your guide will also point out some lesser-known gems that you’ll want to explore during the rest of your time in the city.

Explore picture-perfect Burano with a knowledgeable guide.

You’ll disembark at Burano and pop over to a secret vineyard—now part of a Michelin Star restaurant. Relax and enjoy the views of the vineyards from the restaurant’s stunning tasting room as you sip a glass of excellent white wine served with homemade snacks in an exclusive tasting that’s not available with any other operator.

After your VIP wine tasting, you'll discover the center of Burano Island, home to the famous colorful houses which have been the homes of Venice’s legendary lacemakers since the 16th century. Enjoy a stroll around the island with your guide, taking in the charming streets and sights like the old fish market (no longer in use) and the main church. After the guided portion of your visit, you’ll have the option to accompany your guide to a traditional lacemaking workshop or enjoy some free time on your own.

See Murano’s glassmaking tradition come to life.

Your next stop is the island of Murano, known for its respected tradition of glassmaking since the 13th century. After a 40-minute boat ride, you'll disembark on Murano and head into a formerly abandoned medieval church. Visited by Casanova and Venetian nobles in its heyday, this fascinating space is now a glassmaking workshop. Marvel at a private glassblowing demonstration and learn about the storied history of this local tradition.

After your Murano tour, you'll have some free time to explore the island. Finally, hop back aboard your private boat and we’ll have you back in central Venice by late afternoon. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Murano for a bit longer on your own, with instructions from your guide on how to make your way back to Venice via public transport.

You’ll return to Venice with a new perspective on the Floating City and some of its lesser-visited (yet no less charming) islands. Thanks to the stories from your guide that bring the islands and their traditions to life, your Murano & Burano tour will provide you with a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the lagoon.

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

Lace making was a 2 minute example then heavy selling by store. Wine tasting was 1 wine only. Murano Glass blowing was good. Overall poor value for money.

Murano and Burano tour from Venice

Venice Travel Guides Last Updated · May 18th, 2024 · Maddy [post_comments before=""] -->

burano veneto

Are you thinking of doing a Murano and Burano tour from Venice?

There are many Murano and Burano tours and half-day excursions you can join to be able to explore these splendid Venetian islands. Boats normally depart from various locations such as Piazzale Roma and Riva degli Schiavoni, near San Marco.

Discovering Murano and its glassworks, Burano and its colours in less than 5 hours is possible! But why even join a Murano and Burano boat tour? Because half day tours to the islands are perfect for those who don’t have much time available.

For most visitors to Venice, these tours are highly convenient because boats leave from popular locations near St. Mark’s Square or Piazzale Roma and by booking online in advance you don’t have to queue at the tourist offices in Venice.

What's in this guide?

I want to start off by saying that in my opinion, a visit to Venice can’t be considered as fully complete without visiting the islands of Murano and Burano .

There are many things to do in Venice , but to start off this guide, and before we look at the these island tours, let’s look at where both Murano and Burano are located. Also, some of the reasons why you would choose to visit them in the first place.

Where are Murano and Burano?

Murano and Burano are islands that belong to the Venetian lagoon , and located between Venice (to the north) and the mainland , in northern Italy.

Murano is based on many small islands divided by canals, like Venice. It’s famous for its glass making factories which attract visitors from all over the world.

Burano is further away from Venice and it’s a fishermen’s village known for its rainbow coloured houses and its lace work , which is a tradition that locals have kept alive and handed down through many generations.

It’s worth noting that Burano is connected to the Mazzorbo island by a bridge. This is one of the least visited islands of the Venetian lagoon but still worth visiting.

💡 Local Tip: I recommend visiting Mazzorbo to eat at the restaurant Venissa , the green Michelin starred restaurant whose mission is to enhance and celebrate the flavours of native Venice.

Are Murano and Burano worth visiting?

Yes, Murano and Burano are both worth visiting. See below a few reasons why.

 • Murano is worth visiting to closely watch glassmaking masters . Since the 13th century, Murano has been the hub of the Venetian glass industry , whose techniques have been handed down from generation to generation. The tours include a demonstration by master glassmakers of Murano glass making and the creation of beautiful objects .
 • Burano is one of the most picturesque villages in the lagoon and Veneto region with its lively and colourful houses . According to the legend, local fishermen wanted their houses coloured to recognize them on the way back from the sea on days of thick fog.
 • Another reason to visit Burano is to watch handcrafted lace created by local lacemakers on the streets. It’s quite rare to find Burano lace due to the industriousness of the technique, called the bobbin lace. This ancient technique allows the creation of lace of sublime grace and with truly complex designs.

How far are Murano and Burano from Venice?

Murano and Burano are both north of Venice and Murano is 1.5 kilometres from Venice, while Burano is 7 kilometres away. The only way to reach them is by vaporetto (water bus).

vaporetto sign venice

The main lines depart from the Fondamenta Nove water bus stop, which is 10 minutes away from the Rialto Bridge, and 16 from St. Mark’s Square on foot.

The best way to move between the islands is to get a daily water bus ticket online.

 • To Murano: get the water bus lines 3 from the railway station, 4.1, 4.2 from both the train station and Fondamenta Nove, 12, 13 and N from Fondamenta Nove only. There’s also the seasonal line number 7 from San Marco Zaccaria to Murano main stops. It’s advised to get off at the Murano Navagero terminal to visit the island and to do that use the line Fondamenta Nuove-Murano Navagero 4.1 that takes 17 minutes . You can see this guide on how to get from Venice to Murano for more detailed advice.
 • To Burano: get the water bus lines 12 and N . The best terminal to get off is the Burano C vaporetto terminal. The best line to get is 12, Fondamenta Nuove-Burano C and it takes 45 minutes . You can get from Murano to Burano with the line 12 Murano Faro-Burano C in 30 minutes.

Best time to visit Murano and Burano

The best time to go on a Murano and Burano tour is from late spring to early autumn . Visiting these islands on the shoulder seasons is advised, if you want to avoid long queues at the vaporetto stops and to visit the main attractions.

burano from venice

I’ve spoken about visiting Venice in May before, but in this case I would recommend avoiding the weekends , when many people go on excursions and day trips to these islands. Spring and autumn are therefore ideal to avoid large crowds, and enjoy pleasant temperatures (can go over 20 °C on a warm sunny day).

Of course, there’s a higher chance of rain compared to the summer, but keep an eye on the forecast and plan your stay in Venice around that, when possible.

The best time of the day to visit them is early in the morning and normally, half a day is enough to cover the main sights of Murano and Burano. If you’ve decided to travel there by water bus then you can spend as much time as you want.

Will you be visiting these Venetian islands from May to September? Remember to carry with you a pair of sunglasses and a good sunscreen to protect your skin.

Murano is the second largest island in the Venetian Lagoon, after Venice. Currently, it has 7,000 inhabitants and it is world-renowned for its glassware , attracting millions of tourists every year.

Murano is not only the Glass Island, it also houses one of the oldest churches in the lagoon called the Basilica of Santa Maria and San Donato.

Glass Factories

Although glass-making has taken place in Murano for centuries, it's still to this day the island’s principal industry. For this reason, tourists will normally be asked and led to visit one of the numerous glass factories in the small town . In Murano, many century-old techniques are still used, so watching the artisans work is a pretty unique experience. The Best Murano and Burano Tours to Take in 2024 and Why

Ian Sumpter Last Updated: October 27, 2023

No trip to Venice is complete without a trip to the islands of Murano and Burano, with their famous glass and lace-producing factories. One of the best ways to experience these two islands is on a guided tour. In this article, I’ll cover the best Murano and Burano tours to take this year and why.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to Venice? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. See our guide to Venice for more planning resources, our best Venice tours for a memorable trip, and the top things to do in Venice .

Should You Take a Tour of Murano and Burano?

murano tour from venice

Short answer: yes!

The best tours of Murano and Burano focus on the trades that have flourished on the islands for centuries. In 1291, all glass production was moved from the main islands to Murano to prevent fires and ensure the glass-making skills remained a secret known only to the Venetians. Today, you can watch Murano glassblowers using the exact same techniques that they having been using for centuries for the world-famous venetian glass.

Burano is almost like a toy model village, its tiny houses painted bright colors. Fishermen mainly inhabit the island, but lace production has been centered here since the 15th century. Today, almost every store on the island sells lace, and the ladies who produce it are still often seen practicing their art on the street.

You can, of course, visit both of these islands on your own. It will be enjoyable, you will learn a little, buy some pleasant souvenirs, and be on your merry way. But the best tours offer experiences you would only be able to do with the help of an expert guide. You can learn the history in the book, but a licensed expert guide can elevate any visit to help you get under the skin of the trades, traditions, and legends of these areas.

about 4 hours

Burano and Murano Tour

Special thanks to Anna Maria, Cristina and Desiree for the pictures

Tour Description

Book our Burano and Murano Tour and discover the two most picturesque islands in Venice’s Lagoon! Private boat, pick up, and drop off included.

Most of the visitors explore only the main islands of Venice’s Lagoon and see highlights like St. Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace.

Just a small percentage go beyond and visit the gorgeous islands of Murano and Burano. Be the minority and take advantage of our customized service.

1. Murano: the “Island of Glass”

Murano has a very interesting past. Despite its proximity to Venice, during some periods of its long history, it was independent from Venice, having its own rulers and laws.

The city of Murano actually counts seven islands, separated by canals and connected by bridges, and it boasts of some important sights like the Duomo and the famous lighthouse.

Your guide will pick you up at your hotel and, together, you’ll get on a lovely private boat.

Your skipper will allow you to reach Murano in about 30-45 minutes, and you’ll see a large part of the Lagoon from a privileged point of view: the sea.

Your Burano and Murano tour will continue with a walk through the center of Murano so that you can get a feeling of daily life and the main attraction of the island.

Your guide will tell you about the history of Murano, and you will learn about its most important product: glass.

Since 1291, the production of Venice’s glass was moved to Murano, mostly to protect the main and overcrowded city from the devastating fires which were often an unexpected consequence of glass-making.

This is how Murano became the “island of glass” ; your guide will lead you through the “Rio dei Vetrai” and, if you want, take you to one of the best shops in town.

You will not only be able to take a look at their products but even see part of the glass-making process.

2. Burano: the “Island of Colors”

During the second part of your Murano and Burano Tour, your skipper and your guide will take you to Burano, the “Island of Colors”.

Burano is smaller than Murano, and further away from Venice. But, it’s a very recognizable town, worldwide famous for its colorful houses.

The reason why Burano has such colorful buildings is still mysterious.

In the past, most of the inhabitants of Burano were fishermen. Venice’s Lagoon is famous for its foggy weather during the winter, and that could explain the vivid colors of the buildings.

It was probably the fishermen who decided to paint their homes with unique colors that helped them find their households more easily.

But, Burano is not only famous for its buildings; since the 1500s, the town has developed a great tradition of lace . A legend – of course! – explains the beginning of this elegant tradition.

A fisherman who was sailing outside of the Lagoon met a siren, who tried to seduce him with her beautiful singing. But, he resisted, and the queen of sirens gave him a magic gift: a veil made with the foam of the sea.

The fisherman went back home and donated it to her fiancée. The other girls in Burano, jealous of her veil, tried to imitate it and invented the lace.

Your guide will show you the most picturesque corners of the islands, and its most romantic canals, and tell you more stories about this enchanted island.

Then, you’ll get back on your private boat and return to Venice.

If you’re spending a few days in Venice, take advantage of our customized Burano and Murano Tour, and explore these two lovely islands with a professional guide and a private skipper.

*Pick up is included only if you’re staying within the pick up area . If your hotel is not in the pick up area, let us know and we will find the best solution.

7 Ways to Enjoy Venice Without the Crowds

Posted: March 18, 2024 | Last updated: March 18, 2024

Venice is justifiably popular, but there are several strategies for avoiding the crowds: by choosing the right time of year to visit, exploring further afield, and following tips from people who live there.

La Serenissima, the City of Canals, Queen of the Adriatic—whatever you want to call it, Venice is one of the most enchanting cities not just in Italy but also in the world.

I live a few hours away in Rome, but every time I return to Venice I feel its magnetic pull. Unfortunately, that pull is so strong that it risks overwhelming the fragile city. It’s no secret that Venice has been combatting overtourism for years. The city banned large cruise ships from entering the lagoon in 2021 and a much-discussed fee for day-trippers to enter the city and a limit on the size of tour groups will finally be implemented this year.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t go to Venice, but you have to be a bit strategic about it—both for the city’s sake and your own. (Feeling like a sardine crammed into a narrow calle blocked by tour groups herded around by flag-toting guides is certainly no fun.) The best way to experience Venice is to go during the low season, roughly from November through March. I went in November 2023 and found fewer tourists and better weather than in the busy summer months.

There’s also a lot more to Venice than such popular spots as Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge. The city is shaped like a fish, with the Grand Canal running through it like a backwards S. The farther you go from the Grand Canal, the more the crowds thin out, allowing you to glimpse a quieter side of the city. Better yet, leave the main island behind and venture out to the smaller islands in the lagoon. Here’s how to enjoy the magic of Venice without the masses.

Experience Piazza San Marco the right way

You can’t go to Venice without seeing Piazza San Marco—the iconic square that’s practically a symbol of the city. But it’s also ground zero for hordes of tourists. “It’s nice to go to San Marco in the evening when the bars and shops close and there are a lot less tourists,” says Elena Micheluzzi, a born-and-raised Venetian and one of the sisters behind Micheluzzi Glass , one of the studios keeping the art of traditional glassmaking alive by collaborating with a furnace in Murano to produce tumblers, vases, and other glass objects that they finish and sell in their gallery in Dorsoduro. She recommends booking an evening visit to the Basilica di San Marco, the church containing dazzling Byzantine mosaics. And if you want to go see the Rialto, she suggests going to the market when it opens at 7:30 a.m., right after the fishermen have brought in the catch of the day; you might see chefs shopping for the fresh vegetables they’ll cook up for lunch.

Sara Maestrelli, the young hotelier behind the recently opened Violino d’Oro , a member of the Leading Hotels of the World only five minutes from Piazza San Marco, recommends visiting in November, December, or January, calling the latter “the most deserted, foggy, and mysterious month in Venice.” She notes, “Keep in mind that some restaurants might be closed in January, but those empty alleys with thick fog on the black and gold canals is priceless.”

Take a vaporetto (or water bus) to one of Venice's 100+ islands for a calmer experience.

Visit the outer islands

Most tourists stick to the well-worn streets and canals of the main island, but the Venetian lagoon contains more than 100 small islands; the most important are accessible by vaporetti (the waterbuses that ply the canals). Aside from the most famous islands, like Murano (known for its many glassmaking furnaces) and Burano (the fishermen’s island with a history of lace making where all the buildings are painted bright colors), there are lots of other little islands to explore. Giudecca, for example, is opposite the Zattere in Dorsoduro, one of the six sestieri (i.e., historic districts) on the main island. “On the shore, there’s the Basilica del Santissimo Redentore, the famous church by Palladio celebrated with the Festa del Redentore in July,” Micheluzzi says.

She also recommends the Isola di San Giorgio, explaining that it’s “in front of San Marco but far from the crowds,” and noting that it’s home to the Fondazione Giorgio Cini (a cultural institution focused on the arts, music, and humanities) and the Basilica di San Giorgio Maggiore , whose bell tower has the highest viewpoint in Venice. To learn more about glassmaking in the 20th and 21st centuries, you can visit Le Stanze del Vetro , an exhibition space run as a joint venture between the Cini Foundation and Pentagram Stiftung. Also on San Giorgio is La Compagnia della Vela , which organizes regattas and runs a sailing school with short two- to four-day courses that travelers can join.

Although Venice is known for its artistic riches and historic architecture, it also has places for nature lovers. Take Lido, for example—the only island in the Venetian lagoon with a sandy beach where you can swim. Micheluzzi notes that you can go for a bike ride to the WWF Oasis Dunes of the Alberoni , a protected 395-acre natural oasis with a 10-mile bike path and a lighthouse. Maestrelli recommends visiting the little island of Pellestrina near Lido—home to the Ca’ Roman nature reserve—and staying for a sunset dinner at Ristorante Da Nane .

Consider lesser-known alternatives

While all the tourists line up to get into the Doge’s Palace, the Basilica di San Marco, Galleria dell’Accademia, and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, there are ample under-the-radar museums, churches, and other attractions that don’t draw huge crowds. Consider visiting these alternative sites.

On my most recent trip to Venice, I visited Palazzo Grassi , one of the homes of the Pinault Collection, which organizes modern and contemporary art exhibitions in an 18th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal. (The same ticket will get you into Punta della Dogana, the other seat of the Pinault Collection in Venice.) Micheluzzi recommends Ca’ Rezzonico , the museum dedicated to the 1700s, and its gardens. She also suggests visiting the Museo Fortuny , which houses early 20th-century artist and designer Mariano Fortuny’s studio, the Casa Museo Querini Stampalia and Gardens of Carlo Scarpa, and the Negozio Olivetti , the showroom for Olivetti typewriters designed by midcentury architect Carlo Scarpa.

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco building remains almost untouched since its construction in the mid-1400s.

Churches and religious buildings

Beyond the museums, there’s a wealth of Renaissance art inside the city’s churches and religious buildings by the Venetian masters Veronese, Titian, and Tintoretto. During my stay at Violino d’Oro, Maestrelli brought me to see the Scuola Grande di San Rocco , a lay confraternity covered in more than 60 monumental paintings by Tintoretto, and it was almost empty. We also visited Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari , which contains the tomb of sculptor Antonio Canova as well as works by Titian and Bellini. Micheluzzi recommends the Church of San Pantalon , which contains the world’s largest ceiling painting on canvas.

“I love to find some peace during hot summer days behind San Marco in the Giardini Reali ,” says Maestrelli. She notes that there are many hidden gardens in Venice, like the Gardens of the Scuola Grande della Misericordia . Micheluzzi recommends the rose gardens at San Francesco della Vigna , a Franciscan convent in Castello, the sestiere where the Venice Biennale takes place.

The menu at Corte Sconta comprises clams, shrimp, octopus, tuna-and lots of great pasta.

Eat where the locals eat

With about 30 million tourists visiting per year and an estimated population of 257,777, it might seem impossible to find authentic restaurants that cater to locals rather than tourists, but with a bit of effort, you can do it. When in doubt, ask the concierge at your hotel where they goes to eat in their free time, not where they tell hotel guests to go.

For example, Maestrelli brought me to Enoteca Schiavi , a no-frills wine bar in Dorsoduro for cicchetti . We chose a bunch of small bites from the counter and ate them on paper plates perched on the stone wall overlooking the canal outside the bar. For dinner she recommends Osteria Al Bacareto , which has been serving traditional Venetian dishes like baccalà mantecato (whipped salted cod) and sarde in saor (sardines in sweet and sour sauce) since 1971.

Micheluzzi recommends Corte Sconta , which sources seafood from the Rialto Market and vegetables from the island of Sant’Erasmo, and Al Covo , run by a husband-and-wife team (he’s Italian, she’s American) who adhere to the Slow Food movement. Both are in Castello, which tends to be a bit quieter than San Marco.

Pick up unique vases and glassware at Micheluzzi Glass, which is run by sisters Elena and Margherita Micheluzzi.

Support local artisans

Skip the tourist shops hawking cheap, industrially produced “Murano glass” objects, and seek out the artists and artisans who are struggling to keep this tradition alive. Aside from Micheluzzi Glass, which has a gallery in Dorsoduro, the studios to visit in Murano are Orovetro , Vetreria Venier , and Berengo Studio , which collaborates with contemporary artists.

For textiles, Micheluzzi recommends Tessiture Luigi Bevilacqua , one of the last remaining artisanal weaving workshops left in Venice that still produces velvet fabrics using 18th-century looms. To buy authentic handmade lace from one of the last remaining ateliers that still makes it, head over to Martina Vidal on the colorful island of Burano. Another artisan shop that Micheluzzi recommends is Signor Blum , which makes whimsical wooden puzzles.

Stay in a hotel, not an Airbnb

Though Airbnb has always marketed itself as a way to experience a destination like a local, in Venice the home-sharing platform is driving up the price of housing and squeezing locals out of the city. If you want to support Venice and Venetians, stay in a hotel that employs locals and supports the city’s economy.

The aforementioned Violino d’Oro is a design lover’s dream with an eclectic mix of contemporary art and midcentury design in a location that’s perfect for those who want to stay in the center of the action and have easy access to Piazza San Marco at night, after the crowds have dispersed. If you’d prefer a quieter location, consider the glamorous Belmond Hotel Cipriani on Giudecca Island or San Clemente Palace Kempinski , which occupies its own private island. Both hotels have a boat that ferries guests to and from Piazza San Marco.

Take a gondola ferry

A standard gondola ride costs €90 for 30 minutes during the day or €110 at night, but there’s a money-saving hack that the locals use. At a few designated points in the city, you can catch a gondola ferry to cross the Grand Canal for just €2. The ride only lasts a few minutes, but it’s the fastest way to cross at points where there’s no bridge or vaporetto stop.
