gay travel in belize

Although Belize continues to be a largely conservative country, it is increasingly becoming a popular destination for gay and lesbian travelers. Widespread acceptance of homosexuality has not yet been achieved, but a recent Supreme Court decision that struck down a law banning sodomy is a step in the right direction.

Belize is a melting pot society composed of widely disparate groups such as Creoles (descendants of enslaved Africans), the Maya, Mestizos, Chinese, East Indian, Mennonites, Garifuna (an Afro-Caribbean people), and expats. English is the official language , but many people speak the Mayan, Garifuna, or Spanish tongue.

As a result of their long history and diverse population, Belizeans are tolerant, welcoming, and open-minded about differences. Belizeans are also renowned for their genuine friendliness, curiosity, and hospitality, and most gay and lesbian travelers are made to feel right at home.

Officially, there has never been a Gay Pride parade in Belize, but a number of private functions have been held in the country, including a Pride Week held for the first time in San Pedro in 2015. The organization UNIBAM (United Belize Advocacy Movement) is the bilingual organization that organizes the Pride Week events and continues to advocate greater understanding and integration of all people in Belize.

Belize is also a festive, Caribbean and Latin country with many exuberant and colorful parades, street festivals, and celebrations. In areas such as San Pedro on the island of Ambergris Caye , there are many yearly events that include drag queens and other non-cisgendered events. While not explicitly identified as being gay or lesbian activities, these events are further proof of a widespread tolerance amongst Belizeans for people to act, dress, and behave however they wish.

Reports of assault, harassment, or other forms of intimidation against gay and lesbian travelers are extremely rare. Most gay and lesbian travelers have a good time and are left alone. Areas popular with tourists such as San Pedro, Belmopan and San Ignacio are particularly LGBTQ+ tolerant or friendly, and there are no reports of travelers being arrested or fined for violating the country’s archaic anti-sodomy laws.

In summary, gay and lesbian travelers can safely vacation in Belize even if the country isn’t quite yet gay-friendly. Properties such as Belize Boutique Resort and Spa and others actively welcome LGBTQ+ travelers.

The beauty of Belize

Belize is a small country and up-and-coming tourist destination in Central America that offers travelers abundant outdoor activities, stunning scenery, and vibrant culture. Belize is home to an array of natural wonders bordering Mexico and Guatemala, from lush rainforests and exotic wildlife to pristine beaches and coral reefs.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure-filled jungle trek, Belize has something for everyone. A major attraction for travelers to Belize is its diverse outdoor activities. From snorkeling and diving in the Caribbean Sea to activities like exploring the ancient Mayan ruins, Belize is a mecca for adventure seekers.

Is Belize LGBTQ-friendly?

Belize has a vibrant LGBTQ+ culture and a number of organizations that promote the rights of LGBTQ+ people. While the country is still in the process of developing laws to protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination, the culture is generally accepting and welcoming to all.

However, LGBTQ+ travelers should be aware that queer relationships are not legally recognized in Belize and public displays of affection could lead to unwanted attention. Still, the country is generally quite tolerant and there are many open-minded locals who are supportive of LGBTQ+ rights in Belize.

Legal and cultural safety tips for LGBTQ+ travelers in Belize

In 2016, Belize decriminalized LGBTQ+ identity, however, even some of the younger generations in the country are still anti-LGBT. While Belize has made great strides in recent years to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people, it is still a relatively conservative country that has yet to legalize marriage equality.

Belize is generally a safe destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. Below is a breakdown of some legal and cultural safety reminders for LGBTQ+ travelers heading to Belize on their next trip.

Public displays of affection

It’s easy for public displays of affection to be acted upon without thinking about it but, unfortunately, LGBTQ+ people should be cautious of public displays of affection in Belize. It could be perceived as offensive and could attract unwanted attention, so it may be best to avoid it if that feels safest to you. Coming out is a personal decision, and you should always choose what feels best for you in any given situation. Just be aware that some people in Belize might be uncomfortable or act a certain way when hearing someone discuss their sexual orientation or gender identity in public.

Religious customs in Belize

LGBT travelers should keep in mind that Belize has a strong religious presence and that religious leaders can be outspoken in their opposition to LGBTQ+ rights in Belize. The majority religion is Christianity. With religious leaders opposing LGBTQ+ rights and such a strong religious presence in Belize, it’s possible that those who are religious are anti-LGBTQ+ and may say or do things that speak to their views and beliefs.

Discrimination and harassment

The Belize Tourism Board has taken active steps to promote the country as an inclusive destination, and the police are usually responsive to reports of discrimination and harassment. However, it is important to be aware that LGBT people in Belize can still experience discrimination, and it is important to take safety precautions. Some of the social and legal policies are not LGBTQ+ friendly, and there are sometimes instances of verbal and physical abuse on the streets.

Traveling at Night

LGBT travelers should be cautious while traveling alone and should stay in well-lit, populated areas at night. It is also a good idea to research the local laws and customs before traveling so that you can stay safe and avoid any potential trouble.

General guidelines before you travel

Traveling to another country is a daunting experience for anybody, and LGBTQ travelers often experience additional fears about how welcome they’ll be on their trip. Though Belize is relatively safe for LGBT travelers, remember the following lessons before booking your next vacation.

  • Always do your research. Doing your due diligence is essential no matter where you’re traveling as an LGBT individual. Your research can go beyond a typical Google search–consider connecting with local LGBTQ Belizeans through Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms to garner which parts of the country you will be most comfortable in as an LGBT traveler. Additionally, always refer to the LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index before booking a vacation.
  • Stay aware. Know the culture you’re traveling to, the local customs, and what is considered socially and culturally acceptable before you plan your vacation. It’s essential to understand where you’re going and what is expected of you as a tourist. This step will also help you set expectations for your trip and plan accordingly.
  • Understand the difference between law and culture. While some countries might have conservative laws for LGBTQ individuals, locals’ cultures and attitudes toward LGBT tourists might differ. Modern-day cultures don’t always practice antiquated laws.
  • Show your support. Even if you are not comfortable being totally out and visible in a different country, you can show your support and love differently. Consider wearing a rainbow pin, speaking with LGBTQ Belizeans about their experiences, or donating to the fight for inclusive LGBTQ+ rights in the country you’re traveling to.

Using LGBTQ+ dating apps in Belize

The dating scene in Belize is not ideal for LGBT travelers. While you might have access to certain dating apps, it’s best to be cautious using apps like Grindr or Tinder when traveling to the country. Because you are in a foreign area and one where very conservative attitudes toward the LGBT community still exist in certain areas, you should consider waiting until you’re back home before scrolling through your favorite apps.

Of course, there are LGBTQ+ people in Belize that do date, so if you’re wanting to date, make sure to do it safely. If you’re going to meet up with someone you met online, be sure to really know who you’re meeting up with to avoid harassment or discrimination. It might be a good idea to let someone you trust know where you’re going and who you’re meeting up with if that feels like a comfortable option.

Must-see destinations in Belize for LGBTQ+ travelers

Belize is full of stunning destinations and unforgettable experiences. By looking in the right places, you can find various destinations in Belize where LGBT travelers are more than welcome and accepted. Here are some of the must-see destinations for LGBT travelers in Belize.

1. Ambergris Caye

Many gay-friendly areas in Belize are found in the country’s small islands, or “Cayes.” The Ambergris Caye is the largest in Belize and the center for the country’s gay-friendly nightlife. The Ambergris Caye is noteworthy for its ecotourism industry and gorgeous wildlife.

Ambergris Caye is very safe for LGBTQ travelers when following proper safety precautions. While the nightlife is not labeled explicitly as catering to Belize’s LGBT community, the clubs, bars, and restaurants here are welcoming. They will cater to everyone, making it a hot spot during high-travel seasons.

2. Caye Caulker

This island is slightly south of the Ambergris Caye and is among the most popular spots for LGBT travelers. Caye Caulker caters to a younger population and has numerous budget-friendly options for anyone hoping to vacation comfortably without spending too much money. The beaches on Caye Caulker are perfect for travelers that love kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, or other marine activities.

3. San Ignacio

Located in the western part of Belize, this town is known for its vibrant cultural scene. As one of the country’s top tourist spots, San Ignacio is relatively gay-friendly and welcoming to LGBT travelers from all walks of life. It’s a great place to explore the local culture and visit some of the country’s best Mayan ruins .

Pride events in Belize

Belize’s LGBT culture is still growing, and as the attitude towards the LGBT community is becoming more accepting over time, the presence of Pride events is growing as well.

In 2017, Belize held its first Pride Week , a series of events celebrating the LGBTQ+ community in Belize and the growing acceptance of LGBT rights in Belize. The event helped foster a more significant discussion on equality for LGBT Belizeans and encouraged future private Pride events to continue pushing for expanded LGBTQ rights. It was hosted in August of that year and celebrated the overturning of the anti-sodomy law in 2016. The event was organized by the United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM) , an organization fighting for LGBT equality in Belize.

Pride Belmopan

In Belize’s capital city of Belmopan, LGBT travelers will find the yearly Pride Belmopan event to celebrate the LGBTQ community in the country. Organized by young LGBT Belizeans from the Belize Youth Empowerment for Change organization, Pride Belmopan is an excellent depiction of how acceptance is growing in Belize and attitudes toward LGBT individuals are becoming more relaxed. In time, Pride Belmopan will continue to encourage change and have a more significant political and social influence. This progress means that Belize LGBT travel will potentially become more popular in the near future.

So, is Belize safe to visit for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Generally speaking, Belize is a fantastic destination for LGBTQ+ travelers to visit. Following proper safety precautions and keeping in mind the cultural norms in Belize are essential to having a safe and fun trip. The country’s beautiful landscapes, vibrant culture, and friendly locals make it an excellent destination to explore and create lasting memories.

However, it’s crucial to take measures to remain safe in Belize, especially for queer people that cannot pass as straight or cisgender. Though Belize is in the early stages of protecting LGBT rights, the welcoming and accepting culture is a beautiful experience for any traveler. The country’s progress in protecting LGBT rights in recent years is promising. It is likely that, as more progress is made in upcoming years, Belize LGBTQ+ travel will become a popular option for the LGBT adventure seeker.

Is Belize Gay-Friendly?

  • by Colette Kase
  • April 3, 2019

Is Belize gay-friendly? Local writer Colette Kase talks about how things are slowly but surely improving for the LGBT community in Belize and how LGBT expats are welcome.

Belize made headlines in 2016. It was the first former British colony in the Caribbean to overturn its anti-sodomy law .

This was a relic from colonial days, which criminalized LGBT activity.

The law, while not often enforced, created a climate of intolerance towards gay and lesbian Belizeans. As a result, many of them kept their sexuality a secret.

Even though life could be hard for LGBT Belizeans, Belize had been – and continues to be – a popular destination for foreign LGBT travelers.

Tourism in Belize has been ‘gay-friendly’ for a long time. That doesn’t mean it was all smooth sailing, though. In 1998 a gay cruise ship ran into protests when it docked in Belize. But by 2009, the Prime Minister’s wife welcomed a lesbian cruise as they volunteered at the children’s hospital in Belize City.

Caleb Orozco

In 2010 a Belizean LGBT and human rights activist, Caleb Orozco, took the government to the Supreme Court .

gay travel in belize

He claimed the anti-sodomy laws violated his constitutional rights. His case was successful and has resulted in a more open dialogue about LGBT rights in Belize. Orozco is the Executive Director of UNIBAM , Belize’s first LGBT advocacy group. Since his victory, many LGBT organizations have become more visible and active. This is empowering young LGBT Belizeans and creating a safer place for them to live out of the closet.

LGBT tourism in Belize

Belize’s tourism industry has a significant number of LGBT service providers. Many resorts host LGBT events. Some now market specifically to LGBT visitors.

People dislike public displays of affection in Belize. That goes if you’re gay or straight.

As an LGBT tourist, you should not face discrimination or unpleasantness. As long as you respect the local traditions and customs, you will be fine. Local traditions and customs are rather conservative across most of Belize.

gay travel in belize

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is the most gay-friendly destination in Belize. There are no specific gay or lesbian locations, but bars, restaurants, and clubs cater to everybody. If you visit during high season, you’ll discover a thriving gay nightlife scene.

LGBT expats in Belize

Many LGBT Belizeans come to San Pedro for the more liberal attitudes and party-like atmosphere. LGBT Belizeans and expats own and run many businesses in San Pedro in the open.

In other areas of Belize, LGBT expats live their lives in a more private manner. One does not hear reports they suffer abuse or discrimination. It’s about being aware of and sensitive to the religious and traditional values of the communities where they live.

If you are considering visiting Belize and you are LGBT, please remember that you are an ambassador for the community. Your presence will help to create awareness in a country that’s taking its first steps towards embracing its LGBT citizens. Have fun, talk to people and even reach out to the local LGBT community to see how you can support them.

Know your rights

If you are thinking of marrying in Belize, remember that same-sex marriage is not legal. Many resorts and planners have experience with same-sex ceremonies, though. They will be helpful and encouraging and make certain you have a wonderful time.

If you are in a same-sex marriage and wish to move to Belize, make certain that you have proper powers of attorney for each other. Also, get your wills drawn up by a Belizean lawyer. Should one of you become sick or die, the Belizean authorities may not recognize your marriage.

Should you split up, you may find the courts will recognize your partnership as common law.

Belize is a safe destination for LGBT tourists, overall. LGBT expats should spend time in various areas of the country to find where they feel most comfortable. Connecting with LGBT community groups is an excellent way to meet people and find welcoming friends.

Make Belize your next big gay escape

' src=

Belize, called “The Jewel” by locals and visitors, is a hidden gem in Central America. It has adventure, culture, an island party scene, romance, and ways to unplug all packed into a country that often flies under the radar. For these reasons, Belize has long been a favorite Caribbean destination for LGBTQ travelers.

Now through May is the best time to visit Belize. These winter and early spring months are the Central American country’s dry season. Temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s, bringing more warm sunny days than rainy days and ample opportunity for exploring jungles filled with caves, rivers, waterfalls, and Mayan ruins. Alternatively, you can relax under an umbrella on Belize’s pristine white sand beaches on a private island or at a beach resort.

Belize is the only English-speaking Central American country. Colonized by the British in 1862, Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981. It joined the Commonwealth the same year. However, one relic of the British colonial era that Belize retained was the Buggery Act, which made sodomy punishable by death. Belize’s Supreme Court struck down the country’s anti-sodomy law in 2016, which decriminalized same-sex relationships.

Traditionally woven scarves, bags, rugs, and more can be found at some of the booths at the San Ignacio Saturday Market, located in the Cayo District’s capital city San Ignacio in Belize.

However, discrimination against LGBTQ people persists. There are no legal protections for sexual orientation and the country does not recognize gender identity and gender expression. At the same time, Belize is a diverse country with Mestizo (Mayan and European), Creole (African and Afro-European), Mayan, and Garifuna (Afro-Amerindian) people along with new waves of expatriates, mostly Americans and Canadians, who own resorts and tour businesses that welcome LGBTQ travelers to Belize.

Pick your vacation-style private island, jungle adventure, beach resort, or mix it up with a jungle/island or jungle/beach experience. Belize won’t disappoint you. I chose all three — adventure, culture, and relaxation at a private island escape — during a week exploring Belize.

Enjoy a luxurious jungle escape at the Mariposa Jungle Lodge in Belize.

Belize is home to the world’s second-largest barrier reef and features the Great Blue Hole , which is a part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reported Travel & Leisure. It is one of Belize’s biggest attractions. The large underwater sinkhole surrounded by the Lighthouse Reef atoll is estimated to be nearly 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep. It is so large it can be seen from space. The Great Blue Hole attracts divers from all over the world to explore its underwater mysteries and see more than 100 species of corals and 500 species of fish, according to Dive SSI .

The Caribbean Sea also offers wonderful opportunities for snorkeling. During my visit, our captain (who looked like a young handsome pirate) took my group of snorkelers out to what seemed like the middle of the Caribbean Sea off the private island of St. George’s Caye . There we saw colorful tropical fish, starfish, and conches on the sea’s floor as we swam around in the crystal-clear blue water.

Want to feel more like Indiana Jones than Jacque Cousteau? Belize offers plenty of land adventures that include water, animals, ruins, and jungle trails. During my journey through the country, I withstood the muddy, bumpy roads inside the Chiquibul Forest Reserve to enjoy hiking through the jungle to water holes, waterfalls, and Mayan ruins at Caracol Natural Monument Reservation , a living archeological site.

Belize offers nature lovers nine of the 13 types of forests in the world and nearly as many wild animals. The central American country comes in as a close second to its cousin, Costa Rica, which offers 13 different rainforests and 4% of the world’s animals. Belize has approximately 145 mammals (including Yucatan black howler monkeys), 139 reptiles (including the nearly extinct green iguana) and amphibians, and more than 500 species of birds, making the Central American country a birders’ paradise.

A mother black howler monkey coaxed from high up in the tree by bananas checks out the visitors at the Howler Monkey Sanctuary in Belize.

The Yucatan black howler monkeys are native to Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. The green iguana is native to Belize. Jaguars are native to the area spanning from the southwestern United States to central Argentina. These animals have been in danger due to overhunting and human activity encroaching on their habitats. Sanctuaries protect the howler monkeys, iguanas, and jaguars. Animal lovers can see these incredible creatures at the world’s only jaguar reserve, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve , the Howler Monkey Sanctuary (officially named the Community Baboon Sanctuary Visitors Center and Museum), and San Ignacio Resort Hotel’s Green Iguana Conservation Project .

San Ignacio is the jumping off point to explore Mayan ruins and to go on jungle treks and other adventures. The town itself is bustling, especially on market days, with interesting things to do, including walking through the markets shopping for artisan crafts, visiting the green iguanas, trying Belize’s famous hot sauce, and making chocolate the Mayan way.

Nearly extinct, San Ignacio Resort Hotel’s Green Iguana Conservation Project protects Belize’s native green iguanas and allows visitors to learn about the large lizards that once inhabited many treetops throughout the Central American country.

The Mayan ruins, Caracol, was one of the Mayan civilization’s largest cities. At the height of its power, the city sprawled over 38 square miles and was home to nearly an estimated 100,000 people, according to Florida-based archeologists Arlen and Diane Chase, who have been unearthing the ancient Mayan city’s history since 1985.

I floated down the Belize River through sacred Mayan caves in a tube and learned about the history and what the caves meant to the Mayans at Cave Tubing , an outdoor adventure park. Though I was scared, I braved the dark on a night tour deep into a cave filled with Mayan artifacts at Bol’s Museum Cave .

Belize’s multiethnic culture weaves together a beautiful tapestry of artwork and crafts found in its open-air markets and dishes at rustic restaurants.

Mayans are everywhere in Belize, but their presence is felt most in the mountains. In San Ignacio their spirit is alive and well, showing off their culture from ancient caves and ruins to the roots of chocolate.

One of my favorite things to do to get to know a culture is to walk through markets and eat. In San Ignacio, my guide, Tosh Lanza , one of Belize’s few taxi and shuttle drivers, showed me around the market, pointing out authentic crafts and talking about the different vendors during the morning. In the afternoon, she took me to the city’s few women-owned restaurants. In Belize, it is not common for native women to work outside of the home, I was told. That is starting to change, but very slowly.

Despite the lack of women-owned businesses, we still found several that are thriving in Belize. For t ravelers who like it hot — not the weather, but their food — Marie Sharpe’s Hot Sauce shop offers cooking classes with her famous spicy concoctions and bottles to take home. I prefer things on the sweeter side of life, so I satisfied my sweet tooth by taking a chocolate-making class at AJAW Chocolate & Crafts . AJAW offers classes and tours of its cacao farm.

Making chocolate the traditional Mayan way at AJAW Chocolate & Crafts in San Ignacio in Belize.

If you aren’t eating traditional Belizean food, a blend of Mayan and each of the cultures dishes that make up Belize, you might be in the wrong place. The Mariposa Jungle Lodge and St. George’s Caye serve up beautiful traditional Mayan cuisine from the land and the sea that was pleasing to the palate. Visitors can also visit the women-owned Cenaida’s Belizean Food Restaurant and Cheers Restaurant & Cabanas , which is owned by a Canadian expat.

Further south in the resort town of Hopkins Village, Garifuna people are keeping their traditions alive. The Garifuna are descendants of a mix of formerly enslaved Africans and indigenous people originating in Honduras. Today they inhabit Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. At Tugusina Garifuna Hopkins Village , I learned about Garifuna history, culture, and cuisine. I dined on Sere, a coconut fish stew with vegetables customarily served with mashed plantains. We gulped down refreshing lime and watermelon water to keep cool in the hot weather. We were entertained by musicians singing traditional Garifuna drumming, song, and dance.

Drummers play and sing traditional Garifuna songs at Tugusina Garifuna Hopkins Village in southern Belize.

In the evening, I relaxed in a beach chair watching the waves lap the white sand at Beaches & Dreams , a beachfront boutique hotel in Hopkins Village, before enjoying a light seafood meal at the adjoining restaurant.

Private island experience

I unplugged for a couple days on St. George’s Caye. St. George’s Caye is a luxury island escape in a string of keys just off the coast outside of Belize City, the country’s former capital. Visitors can choose to enjoy the keys and resort and the opportunity to be mostly offline. For those who need to have some connection, there are day trips to neighboring keys, including where the nightlife is in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, and water sport excursions operated from the resort.

Getting there

JetBlue became the first airline to fly nonstop Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Belize City in December, according to a December 6, 2023 news release from the low-cost airline.

Gay Travel in Belize

' src=

Wedged between Mexico and Guatemala, the tiny and eclectic country of Belize has become one of the most popular eco tourism destinations in Central America. The weather is mild, the beaches are spectacular, the history is rich, and yes, it is a land of swaying palm trees, azure waters  and colorful sunsets.

This is an absolutely fascinating country and the only English and Spanish speaking nation immediately south of Mexico with which it shares a land border.

I have some dear friends that have been going to Belize for over 20 years. In recent years Belize has been garnering major international buzz  and for sure there is no signs of it slowing down. With its amazing flora, fauna; breath taking natural resources; the quick accessibility to both a rain forest and a Caribbean beach complete with  palms and white sandy beaches are all reasons why people return to these shores year after year.

While the country is experiencing more tourists, and thus  more diversity in recent years, it’s still very much a conservative democracy. Public displays of affection of all kinds are generally discouraged. Some people will be shocked by gay PDA, so be discreet and mindful of the country’s attitudes. Just be respectful and enjoy the natural scenery; you’re sure to have a wonderful time.

Belize is a romantic and adventuresome destination where you can lounge in luxurious accommodations with a lover, or explore caves and go deep-sea diving with  friends. The  beautiful tranquility of the natural Belizean geographical features will leave you breathless though, so don’t let that small setback keep you from visiting this idyllic land!

WHEN TO GO?    Anytime!  The average yearly temperature is 84° F (29°C), which means that it is pretty much near perfect all year round.

WHERE TO STAY?  There are more than 200 islands in Belize that are known as cayes (pronounced “keys”) that are easy accessible and can serve as ideal bases for fishing, snorkeling and diving. For me personally, I don’t care for the big international hotel chains – I prefer smaller, quaint and romantic places to stay.

El Secreto nestles 13 exclusive individual thatched roof villas with a smart combination of contemporary and traditional elements. This beautiful gay friendly, Boutique Resort sits on the Caribbean beaches of Ambergris Caye, Belize.

(Temptation Island was filmed nearby on Ambergris, 36 miles north of Belize City, and the caye is the country’s liveliest, with open-air bars and restaurants spilling into the white sand in the main town, San Pedro.)

All the villas are equipped with a King size bed, a state of the art led lighting system, air conditioning, iPod dock station, LCD TV, mini bar, safe, hair dryer, Melita coffee maker, 400 thread Egyptian cotton Vivenda linens and Malin & Goetz amenities. They have made many  TOP 10 lists and won many award s for luxury experiences!

Enjoy a unique dining experience at El Secreto Restaurant . A romantic setting where you can “feel” the breeze and admire a beautiful ocean view. It doesn’t get much better than this!

GET PAMPERED with Spa services . Ikal meaning “spirit” in Maya, will reconnect you to the essence of life. A wonderful natural setting where you will indulge to a peaceful atmosphere enjoying Island rituals with the benefits of the sea, bamboo, tropical fruits, spices and aromatherapy.

Private Island: Belize

Pure, exotic, fun, and unforgettable.  Our third and final "10th birthday" celebratory trip combines the uniquely beautiful landscape of Belize, the ancient ruins of the Mayans, and a stunning privately-rented entire island paradise.  For 8 days, we'll find ourselves snorkeling with wild sea turtles, exploring ancient archeological sites, soaking up the Caribbean sunshine, and kayaking across impossibly blue seas in what can only be described as pure paradise.  During the first few days of the trip we'll head inland, exploring impressive Mayan ruins, and soaking in the nature and the cultural heart of Belize before heading out to our own luxury island paradise for 4 nights of Caribbean bliss where all meals are prepared by our own culinary team, and island activities abound.

It's our way of ending the 10th year of Detours with a fabulous bang.  Enjoying both land-based and sea-based adventures with good food, warm weather, and in good company.  Check out all the details of this "special edition" trip to cap off our 10th year of sharing adventures with you.

  • Accommodations
  • What's Included

Our adventure together begins in Belize City, just a couple hours from the US mainland, but seemingly a world away.  While it's the largest city in the country, with a population of less than 60,000 it's far from overwhelming.  Instead, this port city on the Caribbean coast has a warm, small-town feel.  Our hotel is positioned right on the Caribbean shore, with beautiful views out into paradise.

Our first evening of the trip is spent here where we'll gather everyone together, have a big ol' group dinner, and start the fun of our final "10th birthday" celebratory trip!  This is the start of your week to let loose, have fun, and enjoy the stunning beauty of the jungles, ruins, and yes, the private island that awaits us in Belize!

Less than 2 hour drive from Belize City, we'll find ourselves in the town of San Ignacio, the base for exploring the Mayan ruins, and the cultural heart of the country.  We'll spend two days here finding ruins hidden in the jungle, even one that's only accessible by a hand-cranked, and very short, ferry.  The Mayans built incredible cities and temples all over this area and, while they don't get the attention that some of their Mexican sites have, they're equally impressive, without the crowds.

But it's not just the man-made sites that are impressive in this area.  The cave systems offer plenty of unique opportunities to discover underwater rivers, impressive rock formations, and even an underground Maya ceremonial site, complete with artifacts that have been virtually untouched for years.  We'll explore these caves together by tube or canoe as well as the ruins that surround San Ignacio.

It's not every day you get the opportunity to rent an entire tropical island.  But that's exactly what we're doing together! To get there, we'll boat out 17 miles off the mainland to our perfectly unspoiled paradise for 4 glorious nights.  While you may wish to just soak in the natural beauty of the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve that surrounds you, or pamper yourself with spa treatments, there's also plenty of activities to keep ourselves busy during our 4 days here.  We'll head out snorkeling with manta rays and turtles, take out the water toys, take an island-hopping day trip, have a bonfire on the beach, enjoy fabulous meals (they're all included too), swing in our hammocks, and much more.

With 4 nights at our island paradise, we've got time to unpack our bags and really soak in the fun and relaxation that comes with a private tropical island.

On the final day of the trip we'll return to Belize City where we'll say all our goodbyes and head off with plenty of memories of an amazing adventure together.  We'll arrive back into the city at around 12:00pm, so you're welcome to book your departing flight from BZE airport any time after 2:00pm on this 8th day.  If you'd rather stick around Belize and maybe explore other islands off the coast then feel free to stay and keep exploring this beautiful country!

We don't like staying in smelly shacks on our vacations and we're pretty sure you don't either! You work hard to go on vacation and we believe you deserve an enjoyable, comfortable place to wind down at the end of each day. We put a LOT of time into finding the perfect accommodation for your trip. After rigorous wifi signal testing, fluffing pillows, and taking a shower or two, we've narrowed down our favorite properties. Check out our approved accommodation to see where we've stayed in the past and where we'll likely be staying on your trip.

Set right on the waterfront, looking out to the Caribbean Sea, our hotel in Belize City is in the best spot to enjoy the view, the seaside promenade, and the downtown area.  The hotel has a full-service marina, 3 restaurants, a bar, cafe/bakery, and a fitness centre too.

Occupying a private island within the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, this secluded resort near the Belize Barrier Reef is all ours for 4 nights!  Non-motorized water sports equipment is complimentary. Other amenities include an open-air grill restaurant/bar and an outdoor pool, as well as a sports field and a dive center. Massages are available too.

*Please note that due to availability, these exact hotels may not all be available during all Detours trips. However, we will always replace these with similar hotels.

This trip begins and ends in Belize City so, when you're ready to book your international flights, you'll want to fly into and out of Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (airport code BZE).  Many of our travelers choose to arrive prior to the trip's starting date to give themselves some time to rest and get over some jet lag prior to meeting the group.  As Belize City is not known as a popular tourist destination itself, we don't suggest arriving any more than a day prior to the trip starting.  If you'd like us to set up any additional nights of accommodation in Belize City, or if you'd like us to arrange for a private driver to meet you on arrival and transfer you to our group hotel, just let us know!  Accommodation rates change often, so just reach out to us for current group hotel rates.

Don't worry about getting chilly here.  Belize has a subtropical climate, and our stay in Belize happens at the beginning of their dry season so, while there's always a possibility of a bit of rain, you should expect warm temperatures throughout the trip.  Daytime highs around 85 F / 30 C, and nighttime lows around 70 F / 21 C.  It's always a good idea to bring some "just in case" rain gear and a warm outfit, even if we are expecting sun and warmth.

Most of your meals are included in this trip, including all meals at our fabulous private island, who will be cooking up some fantastic feasts during our stay.  You can expect a variety of American and Caribbean meals on offer through the trip and vegetarian diets and allergies can be accommodated.  If you have a very restrictive diet, please reach out to us prior to your trip so that we can make arrangements for you in Belize.

Given the expected warm temperatures, you'll likely spend the vast majority of your time in Belize in shorts and t-shirts!  But you'll also want to ensure you bring comfortable walking shoes too.  If you've got your own snorkelling mask, that would be a good idea to bring as well.  Apart from these things, you'll want to bring anything that you'd normally take on a beach vacation.  Flip flops, sunscreen, hat, and any personal items.  It’s common to hear people wishing they’d packed less stuff, but we’ve never heard anyone complain that they didn’t bring enough. Even if you realize you forget to pack some crucial item you can always pick up a replacement once you arrive in Belize.

Belize uses their own Belize Dollar as their primary currency.  The value is permanently fixed to the value of the US dollar at a rate of 2 BZD to 1 USD.  All businesses in Belize will accept both BZD and USD, so it's important to have some of either, as they would rarely accept currencies other than these.  Credit cards are accepted in most places, but it's always good to have some cash on hand for those things that are cash-based.

No matter where you are these days, the tourism and hospitality industry has come to expect tips for good service.  This includes tipping at restaurants in a similar way as you would at home, as well as staff at our island and guiding staff who operate activities.  It's customary to tip your trip leader as well and, although of course this is entirely at your own discretion, most people budget around $10 USD per day for this.  You'll be able to use local ATMs to access more cash through Belize.

We have pretty high standards when it comes to choosing our accommodations, and trust us, we’ve done plenty of room-sniffing, pillow-patting, and bathroom inspections to make sure we stay at quality spots. To be approved as a Detours accommodations provider, a guesthouse must: be locally owned (to support the local community), be in an amazing location (close to the beach or other hot spots), AND be gay-owned or gay-friendly. We won't be staying in 5-star Ritz-Carltons but we also won't subject you to anything we wouldn't want to stay in ourselves. Clean, comfortable, well-located spots that'll put a smile on your face, you can count on that!

All Detours trips are led by one of our own Detours trip leaders .  They're there with you every day and their job is to help ensure that this is your trip of a lifetime by taking the hassle out of your trip and enabling you to experience everything you came to Belize for.  Consider them like a friendly concierge that's traveling along with you.  All of our trip leaders are gay and all are well-traveled and experienced in the destination they're leading in, so they'll be a great part of your experience!

We do absolutely everything possible to avoid needing such a mundane awakening. A world without alarm clocks is one we want to be part of, and your “rise and shine” while in Belize should come from the sound of crashing waves or church bells in the distance. However, sometimes due to activity schedules we are required to make early departures, but we do everything we can to minimize this.

While most Detours trips are run with a maximum of 15 travelers, this particular trip has a maximum of 30 travelers. Ages of group members vary but around 90% of our travelers are in their 30's, 40's, and 50's. Whatever the age of the guys on our trips everyone's already got something in common, an exciting new experience in a new country! Each group is led by a Detours trip leader who is there to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, allowing you to focus on having the time of your life!

No problem! Don’t worry, lots of our travelers come solo and our trip will provide plenty of chances to meet great people. As far as your accommodations go, you’ve got two choices. During registration you can choose a shared room, where we'll pair you up with another solo group member in a room with two beds, or you can choose a private room.  You'll see all the options displayed during the registration.

Belize uses a "type A" and "type B" plug, the same as North America and several other places in the world. The voltage is 120V with 60 Hz frequency. These days, the majority of items that are plugged into an outlet are built to handle varying voltage and frequency levels, but just to be sure, we suggest checking your item for its acceptable range.

What's included? • All taxes • All group transport between itinerary destinations • Accommodations for your 8-day Detours experience • All full breakfasts • All full meals at our private island (drinks not included) • Welcome dinner in Belize City • Underground tubing experience in San Ignacio • All non-motorized watersports at our private island • Mayan ruins visit in San Ignacio • Two or more knowledgeable and fun Detours trip leaders •

What isn't included? • Meals and drinks outside of those listed above • Activities outside of the those listed above • International Airfare • Arrival/Departure airport transfers • Optional gratuities •

Additional spending budget?   Your big-ticket items and most meals are included through the trip, but you'll want to budget for additional spending such as additional meals, drinks, shopping, activities, etc. These costs can vary with differing personal habits but we suggest expecting to spend an additional $500 USD at the lower end for the more budget-conscious and $800 USD at the higher end for the splurgers.  We suggest arriving to Belize with some US Dollars or Belize Dollars in cash for those few things along the way that can't be paid with credit cards.

Trip Reviews

Paul h. - usa, october 21, 2021.

I was so pleased with my Detours Peru trip that I booked my next trip with them before the first one ended. They do an outstanding job of curating interesting adventures that take you outside of the standard tourist destinations and activities. First-rate accommodations, and they offer a great variety of organized group time plus flex time to meet individual needs and interests. The small group size also makes it easy to get to know others. I have 14 new friends as a result of this trip. They also find great local guides and restaurants. A tremendous value for the price.

I just completed my second vacation with Detours and it was amazing.  Trip leaders Miles and Shane were awesome.  I love the small group concept, as well as the freedom they provide to join in the activities that you want to, and not pay for activities you dont want to participate in.  The trip leaders are so friendly and organized and coordinate everything.  The small group size allows you to get to know people better, and easier to get reservations, travel, and change plans quickly to adapt to situations like weather.  I can't wait for my next trip with Detours!!

On March 20, 2020 we embarked on a vacation to Costa Rica with Detours Gay Adventure Travel! This trip became a life changing event for all of us. At the very start of the pandemic, we arrived and met 7 wonderful people. This was literally right before knew how crazy Covid-19 would get. From there we all faced daily anxiety related to the Covid-19 virus. And we all made decision to make the best of it as safely as possible. As many of you will recall things were changing in the World minute by minute. Thankfully we booked with Detours and they helped us find solace in the vast Costa Rican jungles, in the breathtaking nature, in the gorgeous beaches, in the waterfalls, the raging rivers, at the coffee plantation, throughout the city, with the people, in the delicious food, peering out at the massive Volcano in La Fortuna , sitting in the hot springs, listening to music, hiking the waterfalls at the Villa, sharing each other’s stories and basically creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Owner Miles and tour guide Brandon took care of us beyond expectation. Try to imagine owner Miles watching one tour after another shut down across the World. He kept calm and continued to be a delightful host the entire trip... Miles and Brandon never missed a beat for our 13 day adventure!!! With each change, Miles and Brandon kept us informed and ensured that our trip carried on, so long as it was still safe to do so. Thank you for being the best thing that happened to us in 2020, aside from Trump losing the Presidency. ❤️🏳️‍🌈

LEE'S HONEYMOON TO GREECE

I'm never planning a trip on my own again

"A wonderful travel experience begins with thoughtful planning. From the very first step Bastiaan got to know us both - what we liked, what we didn't, and drew out of us angles of the experience ahead we hadn't even thought of. That turned into a trip plan like no other and something I could have never created on my own. The personal concierge service available while we were traveling was invaluable. There is no doubt we picked the absolutely best partner to work with. Don't make your trip a 'DIY trip'. Work with Mr Hudson and you will have the experience of a lifetime!"

These countries are the most dangerous for LGBTQ+ travelers

  • Published: Jun. 11, 2024, 9:04 a.m.

Best and worst countries for LGBTQ+ travel

Canada is the best country for LGBTQ+ travel, according to the LGBTQ+ Safety Index; this photo was taken during the Winnipeg Pride Parade, Sunday, June 2, 2024, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. (Daniel Crump/The Canadian Press via AP) AP AP

  • Susan Glaser, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – I like to pride myself on my travel research, learning as much as I can about a destination before I visit, from its food to culture to politics.

And yet there I was, strolling the beach, drinking by the pool, feasting on jerk chicken and generally having a grand time in Jamaica earlier this spring. It wasn’t until the day before I flew back to Cleveland from Montego Bay that I learned what a terrible record Jamaica has regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

The popular Caribbean destination received an F on the most recent LGBTQ+ Safety Index, an annual compilation of destinations in the world that are the most dangerous for non-straight travelers.

Among the reasons why: gay sex is illegal in Jamaica, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and hard labor.

Other countries are even worse – in Tanzania, acts of homosexuality are punishable by 30 years to life in prison. And in the United Arab Emirates, male homosexual activity is punishable by death.

I’m a straight traveler and I’ve never given much thought to where my gay friends and family are and are not welcome. Maybe I should.

But it’s a slippery slope – applying progressive Western ideology and ethics to international travel. Should we only visit places with laws and values similar to our own?

If so, we’re missing out on some culturally rich places to visit -- in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, South America, even Europe. I’d like to see the pyramids in Egypt (which earned an F on the safety index) and go on safari in Kenya (also an F).

St. Lucia also gets an F, Poland gets a D, Japan a D+ and Hungary a C-.

As if to underscore the point, last month the U.S. Department of State issued a rare worldwide caution, warning travelers about an “increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQ+ persons and events.”

John Tanzella, president of the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association , called the State Department’s caution “unlike any we’ve seen before.” The advisory, he noted, “comes amidst a worrying rise in anti-LGBTQ+ actions worldwide.”

In an email interview, Tanzella said that despite the recent State Department advisory, the world is continuing to progress when it comes to safe LGBTQ+ travel. An increasing number of countries promote LGBTQ+ tourism, he said, and have decriminalized gay relationships and legalized gay marriage.

“Progress isn’t always linear,” he said. “Setbacks and legal restrictions still exist in some parts of the world.”

Many, in fact.

Despite some countries’ concerning records on LGBTQ+ issues, he said his organization, founded in 1983, doesn’t support destination boycotts or recommend that any places are off-limits.

“Open dialogue and education can bridge cultural divides and foster greater inclusivity,” he said. “Sometimes, a visit, however, cautious, can be a catalyst for progress.”

He recommends that LGTBQ+ travelers research their destinations ahead of time, using knowledgeable travel advisors, tour operators and travel guides (including the guides that his organization produces).

“We empower travelers with education and resources, allowing them to make informed decisions based on their personal comfort level,” Tanzella said.

There are many different kinds of travel, too.

Some vacations are meant to be relaxing, carefree breaks from the stress of daily life. Others can be more educational and culturally illuminating.

In either case, however, if my gay friend isn’t comfortable holding hands with his spouse in public, then maybe they should find somewhere else to spend their money?

In addition, a destination isn’t always synonymous with its government. In Jamaica, for example, I was told that many resorts and individual businesses are much more welcoming and accepting than the country’s laws might indicate.

There’s value, too, I think, in exposing the citizens of other countries to all kinds of American travelers, in that ongoing effort to bridge cultural and societal divides.

These are tricky topics with no easy answers. Every traveler – gay, straight, male, female, trans, nonbinary, etc. -- has to make their own decisions, based on their own ethics, their own sense of adventure and their own tolerance for risk.

Ranking the countries

Travel journalists and researchers Asher Fergusson and Lyric Fergusson first published their LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index in 2019 and have updated it numerous times since.

The index ranks 203 countries, using 10 factors to assess traveler safety. Countries are given individual grades (A through F), resulting in a list of destinations from friendly to hostile.

Measurements include: whether same-sex relationships are illegal; whether hate-based violence is against the law; whether there are legal protections against discrimination in the workplace; whether same-sex parent adoption is recognized; whether transgender people are legally able to change their gender identity; transgender murder rates; whether same-sex marriage is legal; and whether a country is considered a good place for LGBTQ people to live (as determined by a Gallup survey).

Here’s a selection from the index for 2023:

Seventy-two countries earned an F, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, Egypt, St Lucia, Morocco, Kenya, Jamaica, Barbados, Belize and numerous others.

Twenty-four countries received an A or A-, including Canada, which earned the No. 1 spot in the ranking, followed by Sweden, Netherlands, Malta, Norway, Portugal and Spain.

The United States, by the way, received a B+, with the study noting: “Some states don’t offer protections against discrimination or allow for a change of gender. Other states prohibit ‘advocacy of homosexuality’ in schools.”

Atlantis Events

gay travel in belize

Established in 1991, Atlantis specializes in LGBTQIA+ travel but mostly caters to the gay male community. Although it does offer chartered experiences at a handful of land-based resorts, most of its events are cruise ship charters.

The agency books trips for more than 25,000 travelers each year, nearly half of whom are solo travelers . In addition to raucous parties and handpicked entertainment, Atlantis provides luxury, camaraderie and adventure in some of the world's most beautiful locations.

These trips are ideal for gay travelers looking to mingle and party, as well as couples who want to get away with others in the gay community.

Brand g Vacations

Brand g has been a premier operator of luxury river cruises and land tours for more than a decade. Lines Brand g has partnered with include Amadeus River Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises, among others. Available options take passengers along the Rhine, Danube, Mekong, Moselle, Ganges and more.

Because the company specializes in river cruises with a few exceptions, you'll travel with between 40 and 200 passengers in an intimate full-charter setting that caters to the LGBTQIA+ community and its straight allies.

Brand g packages include upscale amenities such as luxury small-group airport transfers and pre-cruise hotel stays and tours. The company also includes alcohol and shore excursions in its fares.

Dreams Unlimited Travel

gay travel in belize

Dreams Unlimited Travel is a gay-owned and -operated travel agency that specializes in Disney vacations — Disney World, Disneyland, Adventures by Disney and, of course, Disney cruises — for all travelers, not just those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

In business for more than two decades, it sells a range of Disney Cruise Line voyages, as well as sailings from Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises .

Although they don't necessarily offer chartered cruises, the staff is equipped to assist LGBTQIA+ travelers in finding the perfect trip for them. This means that a wider selection of voyages is available because they aren't limited to just charters or group sailings.

Netherlands-based GaySail organizes small-group gay charter voyages aboard sailing yachts. Each boat carries between 10 and 16 passengers, with one to three vessels sailing together for a group of anywhere from 10 to 30 men. GaySail's nude cruise arm, GayNudeSail, offers similar sailings with a clothing-optional atmosphere.

Destination options for group sailings might include Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, the Seychelles, the Caribbean and Tahiti. Passengers can also opt for a private charter in other areas of the world. All cruises, whether group or private, include the services of a skipper and cook, as well as breakfast and lunch, with dinner organized in port and paid for via a group fund called a "kitty."

The voyages are for gay men only, with a passenger makeup of about 30% to 40% couples and 60% to 70% singles. Guests come from all across the globe, but the official language spoken on board is English. Ages generally range from about 30 to 50, but the cruises see men from all stages of life as long as they're fit enough to sail. (Sailing experience is not required. Passengers can choose to learn from the crew or simply relax and enjoy the trip.)

The main difference in atmosphere between a GaySail cruise and a gay cruise on a large cruise ship is that the former has more of a laid-back vibe, meaning no raucous parties, all-day entertainment or daily housekeeping services.

Olivia Travel

gay travel in belize

Originally founded as Olivia Records with the aim of helping women launch their own music careers, Olivia Travel has planned trips for more than 350,000 lesbians and other LGBTQIA+ women since it switched its focus four decades ago.

Specializing in women-only travel for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, Olivia offers full-charter vacations, many of them cruises. Because of its musical roots, Olivia has called on big-name talent, such as the Indigo Girls and Cris Williamson, to perform on some of its sailings.

In addition to ocean cruises, the company sometimes offers river sailings.

Out Adventures

This Canada-based company focuses on gay travel for smaller groups, offering a more upscale and intimate experience. Travelers can either join existing land-based tours of no more than 16 people or plan their own tour, with the agency tailoring the experience to client preferences.

Cruises sponsored by Out Adventures max out at 40 people, ensuring you'll feel like more than just a number. This can also present a chance for singles to meet others in a more tight-knit setting. The company's average vacationer is 40 to 55 years old, making these trips ideal for anyone who's no longer in the "party phase."

Additionally, Out Adventures' trips focus on boutique experiences in port while striving to give back to global LGBTQIA+ communities — $50 from each passenger's booking is donated to Rainbow Railroad — while helping to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time with regard to local customs and attitudes.

Pied Piper Travel

In business for more than 30 years, Pied Piper Travel offers gay and lesbian group sailings on several cruises each year. The company's lines of choice in the past have included Azamara , Cunard Line and Celebrity , featuring destinations like Alaska , the Holy Land, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and Australia and New Zealand .

Passengers tend to be mostly gay men of all ages, but lesbians and non-gay or -lesbian friends and family members are also welcome to join.

Although it isn't possible to know how big your group will be ahead of time, past trips have hosted between 15 and 900 passengers. As long as a group minimum of 10 people is met, Pied Piper will assign an onboard host to lead group gatherings, shore excursions and more.

R Family Vacations

gay travel in belize

Founded in 2003 by Gregg Kaminsky and Kelli Carpenter (former partner of Rosie O'Donnell, who was previously affiliated with the brand), R Family Vacations is unique in the LGBTQIA+ travel space in that its specialty is vacations for families with children.

Since O'Donnell and Carpenter parted ways in 2007, the agency has expanded a bit, venturing into the realm of adults-only LGBTQIA+ travel and personal travel.

However, a large part of its customer base still relies on the R Family name for family-friendly cruise bookings that are not full charters.

RSVP Vacations

Offering gay and lesbian travel since 1985, RSVP Vacations charters entire ships for its cruises. The charters tend to be on some of the newest and largest vessels afloat, promising lots of ways for travelers to have fun on board.

In terms of entertainment, the RSVP team schedules themed parties, where costumes are highly encouraged; showcases the latest films, both gay and mainstream; and highlights performances by gay-positive singers, dancers and comedians.

Although it was acquired by Atlantis Events in 2007, RSVP — which has helped more than 100,000 members of the LGBTQIA+ community travel together — does not offer land-based trips. Like Atlantis, RSVP caters to travel for gay men, but its clientele is about 10% lesbian on each sailing.

Saltyboys Sailing Cruises

Like GaySail, Saltyboys is a Netherlands-based travel company that specializes in small-group gay-men-only cruises on sailing ships. The main difference is that while GaySail offers cruises for passengers who don't feel comfortable going au naturel, all of Saltyboys' voyages are designated as either clothing-optional or nudist cruises .

The Saltyboys clientele generally ranges in age from 20 to 50, but there are always exceptions.

Each vessel carries about 10 passengers in addition to the crew, and boats might sail in a flotilla of more than one vessel, meaning your group could join up with others while in port. All voyages include the services of a skipper and crew. Although no sailing experience is required, if you don't wish to learn how to help with anchoring or do your own grocery shopping or cooking, Saltyboys also offers luxury sailings where your fare includes a cook, so everything will be handled for you.

Source Journeys

gay travel in belize

For two decades, Source Journeys has offered all-gay luxury travel that balances adventure with class. It caters equally to singles and couples in groups ranging from 15 to 300 people. The company also donates a portion of all proceeds to LGBTQIA+ charities.

Besides land vacations and individually customized trips, Source promotes full charters of small, intimate cruise ships from lines like Windstar and Atlas Ocean Voyages . You won't find wild parties or scandalous shenanigans, but you will enjoy an upscale experience that's perfect for meeting other gay travelers with discerning tastes.

Source Journeys also runs partial gay charters aboard larger ships (think: vessels from Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line), but those are generally specific Pride sailings that are shorter in duration and to less exotic destinations. Most of what the company touts are voyages to places like the Black Sea, the Dalmatian Coast, Tahiti, the Greek Isles and Antarctica .

Toto Tours is the oldest LGBTQIA+-focused travel company that has had the same management throughout its tenure. Opened in 1990, the agency helps gays, lesbians and their friends and family members travel in comfort and safety.

Most of Toto's business comes from land-based trips and tours, including customized ones, but it does occasionally add cruises to its repertoire.

Vacaya prides itself on serving the entire LGBTQIA+ community and its allies rather than focusing heavily on just gay men. The company provides fully chartered access to all-inclusive, land-based resorts, but where it really shines is with its cruises.

Often offering both river and ocean cruise options, this travel agency mixes fun with adventure and learning on ships both large and small, allowing you to find a sailing that meets your preferences. It can also help to match you with a roommate to offset costs if you're traveling alone.

Although Vacaya is a fledgling company, having launched in 2019 with its first season of trips, it offers a solid product.

I Just Got Back From This Famous Island Nation That's Suddenly the Hottest LGBTQ Destination in the Caribbean

Long considered a no-go for gay travelers, Cuba is now one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic LGBTQ destinations.

From left: Brandon Rosenblum/Getty Images; Courtesy of Verano Forever Travel

It was late one night in Havana, and the popular queer party El Divino de Cuba was heating up. Audience members, all dressed to impress, were ascending stairs to the stage to pay homage to a performing drag queen with a dramatic beso on each cheek and a fistful of pesos folded into fake cleavage.

Truthfully, Cuba had never been high on my list. Friends had told me that the food was disappointing and the LGBTQ scene basically nonexistent. But when I finally visited the island, together with 12 other gay men, on an educational group tour organized by Verano Forever Travel , we found a place full of wonderful food and fun parties with drag queens.

That’s proof of how much has changed in recent years, explained Carlos Gonzalez, the founder of Travel the Artist Way and one of our guides for the week. Two decades ago, he continued, events like El Divino would have been held secretly to avoid police raids.

Today, El Divino is on Instagram — and LGBTQ Cubans can legally marry, adopt children, and access free gender-affirming care. Rather than deport LGBTQ foreigners, as Fidel Castro once did the American poet Allen Ginsberg, the government now operates two hotels specifically marketed to queer visitors.

The country’s struggles are also driving change. In 2021, Cuba erupted in some of the largest protests since the revolution, as a result of persisting economic hardships. In response, the government relaxed rules on private enterprise, leading to the opening of more bars, clubs, and other small businesses, explained Alejandro Almaguer, Verano’s founder.

LGBTQ bars in Havana, including PaZillo and XY , regularly host queer parties that last until the wee hours. Then there are mixed venues such as King Bar , which on a crowded Friday night featured a saxophonist jumping on the tabletops while playing along with the DJ’s salsa tracks.

Not that we were focused solely on nightlife. One afternoon we had a private viewing of work by Alejandro Cañer, an up-and-coming queer digital artist. “You won’t find his stuff at official galleries here,” Gonzalez told us. Entering the pop-up, in a small studio in a residential building, it became apparent why.

“I’d describe my work as sexually deviant propaganda,” Cañer explained, as I admired a piece depicting a flexing Che Guevara wearing a harlequin-print thong. “I like to manipulate the history of my country, play with the symbols and concepts that accompany it, and make it scandalous.”

We also had a chance to explore beyond Havana. In Viñales, our group took a short horseback ride through the countryside before arriving at a private tobacco farm, where we learned to make fresh sugarcane juice and puffed on cigars. Lunch was a farm-to-table feast at Restaurante El Cuajaní , which serves dishes such as bruschetta and fresh pumpkin soup.

Toward the end of our week, Gonzalez surprised us with a pig roast in the countryside outside Havana. The ground still wet from rain, we danced barefoot in the mud alongside our hosts until a drag show began. During a Lady Gaga medley, a queen named Salma de Armas hoisted me in the air — an impressive feat considering all the pork, tostones, and yuca I’d just eaten.

“Come with a sense of adventure,” Gonzalez said, “and you’ll have a good time.”

What to Know Before You Go

U.S. citizens can legally visit Cuba as long as they adhere to authorized travel categories, such as “educational activities” and “support for the Cuban people,” established by the Department of the Treasury. Tours such as those from Verano Forever Travel qualify, as do other organized programs that emphasize cultural exchange.

Americans also need to purchase a visa — available from airlines or Cuba Travel Services — and complete a digital form, D’Viajeros, within three days of arrival. Americans are prohibited from spending money at government-run establishments; the Department of State maintains a list of “restricted entities.” U.S. credit cards typically don’t work on the island, so bring plenty of cash.
