The Ukrainian borderland has long been a place where cultures merge and interchange. Now it is again a place of combat.

Through relentless loss, it is being transformed, possibly forever, into a treacherous and abandoned gray zone.

What was once a shared way of life, and faith, is dwindling.

Getting even daily essentials to the few who remain is a dangerous struggle.

Between the Offensives: Images From a Journey in Ukraine’s Borderland

Photographs by David Guttenfelder

Written by Peter Robins

David Guttenfelder traveled along Ukraine’s northeastern border twice in the months before Russian troops again poured through.

Leer en español

The invaders had not returned. Not yet. But along about 600 miles of Ukraine’s northeastern border territory that The New York Times visited late last year and again in the early spring, the war has never left.

Much of this area, in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, was farmland once. Now a farmhouse hosted a counter-saboteur unit — made up of anti-Putin Russians, to avoid sending Ukrainian troops into Russia — preparing before dawn for a cross-border raid.

The fields are far too exposed to Russian fire for anyone to try a harvest. Instead, they are sown with “dragons’ teeth,” concrete antitank barriers typically bound together with cables and threaded with razor wire.

A group of soldiers meeting around a crate, seen in night-vision red.

In 2022, Russian troops rolled over this area and almost to the doorstep of major cities like Kharkiv and Sumy. Then, before the end of that year, Ukrainian forces pushed them back across the border.

Russian troops began a new offensive in the Kharkiv region last month. But these villages, within 10 miles of the border, were always in range of artillery fire.

Sirens cannot provide enough warning time for a bombardment from this close, and air defenses cannot repel it. Residents rely on deliveries of humanitarian aid, and the long, cold wait for supplies takes place under near daily shelling.

Bombing and drone attacks were already intensifying before the new ground offensive.

And Ukraine’s military was already transforming the landscape: new mazes of trenches and bunkers, more closed-off zones and vast fields and forests of land mines. At checkpoints, nervous soldiers flew drones to scan the approaching roads.

Soon, said the mayor of one village that lies within range of Russian artillery, there will be nothing to photograph but stray dogs and ruins.

The civilian government has struggled to provide supplies and basic needs or to persuade residents to evacuate fully. Schools teach remotely or inside underground bunkers.

The war is bringing stark change to an area where families often have members in both Russia and Ukraine and where a common faith and culture spread across the border. Even now, a border crossing has remained open for civilians in the Sumy region.

In the village of Richky, about seven miles from the Russian border in the Sumy region, Father Bohdan Oprysko, an Orthodox priest, said that after an increase in Russian attacks, very few people could attend services. Now, “It’s only on holidays, like Easter, that the church is full,” he said.

His two sons moved to Poland with their families before the full-scale war started in February 2022. He and his wife have resisted their urging to move abroad as well.

“It’s my hometown,” he said. “How can I go somewhere else?”

In some towns and villages, only a few people remained, largely women and older people with nowhere to go. Vovchansk, which became a battlefield again in May after Russian forces came over the border in the Kharkiv region, had about 2,000 residents by December, down from its prewar population of about 17,000. It had visibly deteriorated by the spring.

The scars of invasion and bombardment had rendered some reclaimed settlements uninhabitable.

Russia’s new push in Kharkiv began at perhaps Ukraine’s most vulnerable moment since the beginning of the full-scale war — its forces stretched, its store of weapons and ammunition depleted after months of delay by its most important supplier, the United States.

Now, more American aid is coming and Ukraine’s Parliament has changed military recruitment rules to try to recruit more troops. But Russia appears to be intensifying the pressure.

As they have argued recently for more leeway to fire American-made weapons into Russian territory, Ukrainian officials have pointed to further gathering of troops, including just across from the Sumy region.

Ukraine’s borderlands may be about to become more dangerous still.

Yurii Shyvala , Dzvinka Pinchuk and Oleksandr Chubko contributed reporting.

Snap it! An Eclipse Photo Adventure

The Traveler needs your help! They have come to Earth to study an event we call a total solar eclipse . Can you help the Traveler snap photos of an eclipse?

About Eclipses

Total solar eclipses happen when the Moon gets between us and the Sun . During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts its shadow on part of Earth.

A diagram shows the Moon between Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth. Near the Sun, a spacecraft is also seen.

Credit: NASA/Krystofer Kim

If you're in the center of the shadow, you can see the Sun's upper atmosphere appear around the Moon!

At the center of the image, the Moon blocks the Sun during a total solar eclipse. The Sun’s wispy upper atmosphere can be seen around the edge of the Moon.

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse crosses North America. It passes over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Anyone along the eclipse’s shadow path can see the total eclipse if the skies are clear. During the total eclipse, the sky will darken. It will look as if it were dawn or dusk. This total solar eclipse will be the last one that many people in the United States will be able to see for many years.

If you want to look at a solar eclipse, make sure you have solar viewing or “eclipse” glasses! These glasses are much darker than normal sunglasses. They block most of the Sun’s light. Looking directly at the Sun without eclipse glasses can damage your eyes. Remember to also use special filters over the lenses of cameras, telescopes, or binoculars when looking at the Sun. The only time during a solar eclipse when it’s safe to look at the Sun without eclipse glasses is during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face. Ask an adult for help looking at the Sun.

Total solar eclipses happen somewhere around the world about once a year. But because the Moon casts a fairly small shadow, these eclipses can only be seen from a small area on Earth each time.

Other things can also pass between us and the Sun and block some of its light. When this happens, it is called a transit . Different things like planets, comets, spacecraft, and even birds can transit the Sun.

How to Play

The goal of this game is to snap photos of eclipses and objects that transit the Sun. Here’s how to play on your desktop:

  • Use your cursor to center on objects passing in front of the Sun.
  • Press the spacebar to take a picture.
  • To take a close-up picture you can zoom in and out using your laptop trackpad or scroll wheel on your mouse, or by pressing the W and S buttons on your keyboard.
  • To change the camera filter and get a different view of the Sun, press the A and D keys.

A view of the game shows an object crossing in front of the Sun, surrounded by icons related to gameplay.

Credit: NASA

Since the Sun is very bright, transiting objects look like dark shapes. During the game, you might notice some objects are bigger than others. That’s because the objects are different sizes and different distances from you. Objects that are far away, like Mercury, look smaller — even though Mercury is an entire planet that’s even larger than the Moon. Objects that are closer to Earth – or even in Earth’s atmosphere, like a plane – look bigger. Here are some examples from the real world:

A tiny dot on an orange semicircle shows Mercury as it crosses in front of the Sun.

Mercury can be seen crossing the face of the Sun at the bottom of this picture. Credit: NASA/Bill Ingalls

The International Space Station can be seen transiting an orange Sun in this combined photo.

After the time is up, you’ll be able to review your photos. You’ll also find information about the objects you captured. Select your favorite snaps to make postcards. You can decorate and save them to share with your friends and family. Play again to discover rare objects and take more photos!

Boeing Starliner with crew reaches International Space Station

  • By VOA News

Boeing Starliner spacecraft prepares to dock, for the first time, with the International Space Station, June 6, 2024. (NASA via AP)

Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, carrying crew on board, safely docked at the International Space Station after trouble in the propulsion system and two helium leaks since entering orbit.

While the original docking was scheduled for 12:15 p.m. EST, the spacecraft autonomously docked at 1:34 p.m. EST.

The thrusters of the reaction control system (RCS), which provide nuanced maneuvering ability, were having issues. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, the two astronauts on board, were manually piloting the Starliner.

It is currently unclear if the helium leaks and the thruster issues are related.

After years of delays and two failed launches, Starliner lifted off from Florida on Wednesday. Previous setbacks included software that placed the Starliner on a bad trajectory during an uncrewed test, as well as finding flammable electrical tape in the cabin.

Boeing's Starliner capsule, seen atop an Atlas V rocket, lifts off from its launch pad at Space Launch Complex 41 in Cape Canaveral, Florida, June 5, 2024.

NASA and Boeing were aware of one helium leak in a Starliner thruster upon the first failed launch in May.

The teams decided not to repair the leak, stating that testing showed the leak rate to be within safety limits. Repairing the leak would have involved a complicated process with disassembling the Starliner in the factory.

Since beginning the mission, the Starliner has developed two more helium leaks, as posted on the NASA X account.

"Two of the affected helium valves have been closed and the spacecraft remains stable," said the post.

FILE - NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams walk at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, June 5, 2024.

Boeing spokesman Jim May also said that the leaks do not pose a safety concern for the test pilots or the overall mission, stating that the Starliner has helium reserves and that the thrusters will not be needed upon docking at the space station when the propulsion system is disabled.

The helium pressurizes the fuel lines of the thrusters for maneuvering the spacecraft, and engineers created a plan in case of additional leaks. The original leak was likely caused by a small faulty rubber seal.

Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, the two astronauts on board, are the first crew members to fly on the Starliner.

Boeing and NASA are hoping to add a second provider with SpaceX having regular trips to the space station already. The current trip goes toward the certification process for Boeing. This is also the sixth type of spacecraft built by the United States flying NASA astronauts.
