The Ultimate Travel Guide to Christmas Island

  • Getting there
  • eat & drink
  • destinations

The tiny, reef fringed, Australian territory of Christmas Island captured the imagination of wildlife lovers everywhere when Sir David Attenborough, one of the world’s most respected naturalists, showed the world the extraordinary footage of millions of red crabs migrating to the ocean describing it as ‘one of the top 10 most memorable TV moments from his life’s work’.

Yet there’s so much more to experience here than this brief, albeit spectacular event. Thousands of kilometres from the mainland in the remote confines of the Indian Ocean, Christmas Island is teeming with experiences for adventure lovers, with an eclectic mix of flora and fauna above and below the surface; breathtaking nature, with almost two thirds of the island national park; as well as a fusion of Malay, Singaporean, Australian and Chinese food and culture.

By day, you can take a dip in deserted grotto pools or shower under luxuriant rainforest waterfalls, dive into deep-blue ocean drop-offs, thousands of metres deep, and snorkel alongside peaceful whale shark giants.

You’ll find some of the world’s rarest birds here. Going on tours to their nesting grounds, you can creep closer to red-footed and brown boobies, camera in hand. Just remember to bring those spare memory cards. In a natural paradise like Christmas Island, you’re going to need it.

Christmas Island is in the Indian Ocean, 2,600 kilometres northwest of Perth and 350 kilometres south of Indonesia.

You can reach this remote Australian island by taking a flight from Perth with  Virgin Australia  to Christmas Island, which takes three hours and 50 minutes. All major towns in Australia fly to  Perth .

Upon arrival, you can hire a car from the  Christmas Island Visitor Centre , with 4WD recommended.

Best time to visit Christmas Island

Christmas Island’s temperature ranges between 22°C and 28°C. It has both wet and dry seasons, with humidity dropping between May and October.

The migration and spawning of the red crabs is the island’s most famous seasonal event, taking place around October to November.

Indian Ocean Fest

Be one of only 30 people to experience the first Indian Ocean Fest, Australia’s most remote island festival for adventure-loving oceanophiles, in June 2022. The inaugural festival will celebrate the soon to be proclaimed marine park status of an area larger than France and one of the most fascinating and unique ecosystems on Earth.

The exclusive seven-day festival offers guests the chance to immerse themselves in a dizzying array of nature experiences, including encounters with the island’s diverse and prolific wildlife. The carefully-curated program blends adventure-based experiences and one-of-a-kind culinary experiences paying homage to local cultural diversity and Asian heritage. It will also showcase some of the latest innovations in eco-friendly practices, marine science and ocean conservation designed to inspire and provide practical solutions of how you too can help protect the world’s oceans.

The full seven-day program of inspiration, entertainment and adventure with film, art, music, food, talks, treks, trails, hands-on workshops will be released in January 2022.

Nature & beaches

Start with a lazy morning at  Flying Fish Cove, the island’s most popular beach and main hub. From there, hire a 4WD to discover remote beaches and swimming holes like the Grotto.

Two-thirds of the island is a national park, meaning plenty of opportunities for coastal and rainforest walks. Walk up to Margaret Knoll Lookout for spectacular clifftop views. Here, you might spot the Christmas Island flying fox and seabirds.

Diving & snorkelling

Being near the Java Trench means the opportunity to dive incredible drop-offs, as well as in caves and on coral reefs. Between November and May, visitors can even swim with whale sharks. But you don’t need to go far offshore to see marine life. Grab a snorkel at one of the island’s many beaches and wade in to spot turtles and tropical fish. Consult our comprehensive guide to the best snorkelling and diving sites on Christmas Island for a closer look at what’s on offer.

Fishing & wildlife

The island’s most celebrated event is the annual crab migration, which starts as the wet season begins. These fascinating creatures aren’t the only crustaceans of interest here. The robber crab – the world’s largest land crab – can also be seen.

Anglers can take advantage of the island’s steep drop-offs that are close to shore to try their hand at catching big fish like the Giant Trevally.

Christmas Island is also celebrated for its rare birdlife, with tens of thousands of migrating seabirds nesting here every year.

Find the right Christmas Island accommodation to suit your holiday; from a luxury stay with unforgettable views to more modest options with all the conveniences of home.

Luxury accommodation

The  Swell Lodge resort is the national park’s only accommodation, and probably the island’s most famous. Not only is it highly luxurious and exclusive, but it’s also a fully-inclusive stay in one of two glass-fronted eco-chalets.

Hotels & lodges

Captain’s Last Resort  offers a quiet, self-contained stay for two on a sea cliffs edge, close to the centre of town.  Cocos Padang Lodge  has four self-contained apartments in a heritage building. Close to the Settlement, this is a great pick for families.

The Divers Villa  is a refurbished English colonial house surrounded by tropical gardens, where guests can either book individual rooms or the entire house. It has a shared kitchen and dining facilities.

For a three-star hotel stay with ocean views,  The Sunset  is also in the district, with its own swimming pool right on the waterfront.

You can camp on Christmas Island, but you will need to bring tents and other equipment, as there are no ‘for purpose’ campsites built on the island. To apply for a camping permit, contact the Christmas Island National Park office here.

Uncover the best culture and foodie experiences on Christmas Island

The diversity of the language and culture on the island has influenced its identity and made for a beguiling mix of rest...

For your Christmas Island stay, you may wish to opt for self-catered meals a lot of the time. Food on the island tends to be more expensive, due to the cost of transporting it from the mainland and Indonesia. Plenty of accommodation comes with kitchenettes, and there are barbecue sites all over the island for open-air feasts of food bought at the local supermarket.

The whole island operates as a duty-free destination, meaning alcohol is reasonably affordable – hello mixing up our own Mai Tais to enjoy on the deck! Shops also have reduced duty-free items.

That doesn’t mean you should skip eating out entirely. A rich blend of cuisines as varied as Chinese, Malay, Indonesian and Australian fare at the limited number of restaurants make for a scrummy fusion of flavours, albeit at a slightly higher cost.

For breakfast, you can head over to  Idah Kitchen at the Malay Club  for traditional Malaysian breakfast or  Smash Espresso Bar  for eggs and coffee. Grab a sundowner drink and a pub dinner with locals and other tourists down at the friendly  Golden Bosun Tavern.  The  CLA (Chinese Literary Association )  dishes out plates like Hainanese steamed chicken rice.

Note that during Ramadan or Chinese New Year, opening hours may vary, so check ahead of time.

Tours & packages for Christmas Island

Indian Ocean Experiences  offers an inclusive tour, flight and 4WD package to see the  red crab spawning , and smaller  tours that take in natural big-hitters like Hugh’s Waterfall and the blowholes, and bird-watching trips to see the rare abbotts booby birds.

Head out on a fishing charter with companies like  Shorefire , who have full-day trips with lunch and drinks. Common catches include giant trevally, dogtooth tuna and sailfish.

This stunning and eco-diverse island is one of the best places to sharpen your photography skills. Depart from Perth for multi-day trips with  Chris Bray Photography , or head out with  Faulkner Photography  for a personalised day trip.

FAQ: Single, twin-share and more

What is twin-share, triple-share and quad-share.

The share-basis is about accommodation pricing. It does not mean that you share a room with a stranger.

"Twin-share" is where two people occupy a hotel room (open-plan style) or other accommodation such as an apartment, usually a couple or two friends. This is the normal way accommodation is priced. The price is shared between two people. Most accommodation properties (eg. hotels) offer rooms with king, queen or double beds. Most offer the option of "twin" beds as well which actually means two single beds to accommodate singles sharing, couples wanting space and so-on.

"Triple share" is where three people occupy the accommodation and share the price. "Quad-share" is where four people occupy the accommodation and share the price. Family apartments and hotel rooms usually include a king, queen or double bed and one or more single beds to handle triple and quad-share arrangements. Sometimes other bedding configurations are available as well.

What is a seasonal adjustment?

Some accommodation providers, especially in very popular holiday locations, have higher room rates for busy holiday periods (usually spring and summer holidays). We must make an allowance for those price variations if applicable.

What is a single supplement?

A "single supplement" applies to single travellers who want a room to themselves. Because the price is not shared, a "single supplement" applies. This additional amount is based on the single covering the entire accommodation component of the trip that would normally be split between two or more people.

Learn about the island with a fun orientation tour and more

Take the short drive to Territory Day Park, which sits atop a mountain crest and offers spectacular views of Settlement and the popular adjacent swimming spot, Flying Fish Cove, below.

Enjoy a two-kilometre return rainforest walk around the park and get your bearings before taking the visiting Tai Jin House, a grand manor that was originally the residence of the island's British administrator. You'll find a permanent exhibition detailing Christmas Island's fascinating history. In the evening, we recommend dinner with the locals at the Golden Bosun Tavern, a relaxed pub by the water serving tap beer and affordable meals.

With all the new information you learn on your tour, the rest of your day can be spent at leisure. Before sitting down for dinner, drive to nearby Martin Point for spectacular sunset views and loads of frigate (booby) birds.

Activities:

Explore Christmas Island's remarkable underwater world

If you have diving experience and equipment, today you can explore Christmas Island's spectacular underwater world in the area's perfect diving waters. Equipment can be rented if required and must be booked in advance.

Because the island is perched on the edge of the Java Trench (the Indian Ocean's deepest point), it offers some of the world's best wall dives in exquisitely clear water. Divers are likely to see large pelagic fish such as tuna, barracuda, and reef sharks, as well as some of the 88 coral species and 600 fish species living here, spinner dolphins, and green and hawksbill turtles.

During the October to November's red crab migration – a sight that Sir David Attenborough called one of the most memorable moments of his television career, due to the millions of crabs that move down to the water like a giant red carpet – you can take a tour and watch the female crabs spawn.

If you play golf, then try the lush fairways of the nine-hole Christmas Island Golf Course. If you’re not a diver or golfer, just take it easy today or head out for more sightseeing around the island. (Important: Let us know if you would like to book diving equipment.)

Coconut palms and white sandy beaches await

Pack a picnic and drive to the beginning of the Dolly Beach walking track, where you'll take the leisurely one-kilometer boardwalk through rainforest to arrive at this special place.

Dolly Beach is a powdery white stretch of sand framed by a dramatic grove of coconut palms and surrounded by shallow, azure waters, complete with a coral reef. Be sure to take a dip in the natural rock pool in the middle of the beach (it's nicknamed Dolly Beach Spa for the gentle waves that swoosh into it, creating bubbles) and look out for the area's robber crabs as well as the turtles that nest here all year round.

Afterwards, drive south through the rainforest to the Blowholes stopping at the stunning Strangler Fig along the way, where you'll see a dramatic natural performance. The waves here spurt upwards through hundreds of holes in the rocky coastline, creating airborne jets of water in a landscape of black rock pinnacles.

Immerse yourself in the cool waters of the Grotto and visit Mar Chor Nui Nui Temple, then finish the afternoon with a snorkel and barbecue at Flying Fish Cove.

Return to Settlement via the stunning Margaret Knoll lookout, which offers panoramic views of the island's east coast and is a perfect site to watch seabirds soaring.

Eye-to-eye experience with the island's native birds

Birds, birds and more birds! Today you have the opportunity to experience Christmas Island's unique birdlife with an optional 4-hour panoramic tour. Even if you're not a "twitcher" (avid birdwatcher) you are going to love this.

First you will visit Golf Course lookout with stunning views across part of the eastern side of the island. During your eye-to-eye experience with many of the island's bird species, learn more about their unique biology and behaviour and why they call Christmas Island home. You will then visit Lily Beach for a tea break whilst viewing juveniles and nesting birds and then onto Ethel Beach.

Afterwards you’ll venture to the top terrace to view Abbotts Booby birds in their nesting habitat – one of the rarest seabirds in the world! In the evening, kick back and take in an evening movie under the warm, tropical sky at the Outdoor Cinema.

Take the boardwalk through Tahitian chestnut trees, strangler figs and banyan trees

Fifteen kilometers from the settlement you'll find the Dales, one of the few places on the island with permanent flowing water, providing a significant habitat for the island's blue crabs.

Take the boardwalk through Tahitian chestnut trees, strangler figs and banyan trees. On your way, look out for the blue crabs, which are an incredible sky blue colour, and follow the freshwater stream to Hughs Dale waterfall, where you can enjoy a shower in the fresh water.

The Dales is one of Christmas Island's two Ramsar protected wetlands. If you are feeling adventurous, follow another trail from Hughs Dale to Andersons Dale, a small gorge with a stream that flows to the sea.

Relax with a free day to enjoy at your leisure

Today is your last free day to explore the island. Seek out a previously undiscovered cove or simply relax on the beach. The choice is yours. Make sure you bring your fishing gear because there are plenty of shore-based locations from which to launch a bait, fly or lure in front of GT's, bonefish, wahoo and more.

Journey to the gorgeous Cocos Islands

900km from Christmas Island, Australia's last unspoiled paradise lies in the azure waters of the Indian Ocean offering spectacular snorkeling, world-class diving, and excellent fishing.

An almost perfect circular atoll of 27 islands, each blanketed with coconut palms and surrounded by white sand beaches, Cocos, as it's known to locals, is home to only two inhabited islands: Home Island and West Island.

This afternoon you're flying here, so spend your morning doing some last-minute shopping for Christmas Island art at the Wild Papaya gallery, and shopping for souvenirs at the Visitor Information Centre before boarding your 90-minute flight.

You'll disembark onto the Cocos runway which is in the middle of the West Island golf course – your first clue that the Cocos Islands are rather unusual.

After picking up your hire car, check-in to your accommodation and spend the rest of the day relaxing at leisure. We recommend having a sunset drink at the Cocos Club before dinner in the beach garden at Tropika Restaurant, which serves a terrific buffet each night.

Explore nearby Home Island & Direction Island

On the opposite side of the atoll to West Island you'll find Home Island, where a small, unique indigenous population of about 450 Cocos Malay people live.

A two-hour optional cultural tour of Home Island – only 20 minutes by ferry from West Island – offers fascinating insight into the way these friendly locals live. Discover Cocos Malay traditions, try basket weaving, learn a few Cocos Malay words and visit the museum.

On nearby Direction Island you'll find Cossies Beach, which, with its creamy white sands, palm-fringed edges, and bright blue water, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. To get here, take the 30-minute ferry from West Island to Direction Island and orient yourself on the fascinating three-kilometre walk around the island.

You'll find plaques describing the island's history, including the sinking of SMS Emden, a German ship, during the Battle of Cocos in World War I. Cossies Beach is also home to one of the islands' best land-based drift snorkels, the Rip, in which you can drift above corals, giant trevally, turtles, parrot fish, reef sharks and more. Hire snorkelling gear and receive a detailed brief on snorkelling the Rip before you board the ferry, back at West Island's Visitor Centre.

Embark on this exciting and informative 3-hour Cocos Malay History and Cultural Tour. Visit the museum, travel through the Kampong (village) to meet some local elders, learn about coconut husking, basket weaving and woodworking, and so much more.

Embark on a motorised outrigger canoe safari

Today is yours to explore West Island; although home to a relatively small population (about 100 people), there's still plenty to see and do. Start with a takeaway coffee or chai latte, then embark on an ontional canoe safari exploring the southern islands of the huge lagoon, where you'll see lots of marine life including turtles, dolphins and tropical fish.

The four to five-hour tour departs at different times each day (depending on the tide). You might find yourself enjoying a Champagne breakfast on a floating pontoon, learning about the islands’ history and culture, going snorkelling, strolling on deserted beaches, exploring some of the uninhabited islands and viewing turtle breeding sites.

It is estimated there are 30,000 green and hawksbill turtles living in the middle of the atoll. Walk out to the end of West Island's town jetty on the north of the island in the late afternoon to see dozens of turtles swimming in the shallows.

We recommend having dinner this evening at the Flying Fish Cafe, which serves local fresh fish such as coral trout and sweetlip. It is the perfect way to spend the last night of your getaway.

General Tour Package FAQ's

What options or assistance is available for groups to run their own tours..

All tours can be operated on a "Group-guided" basis. A complete "Tour Manager Notes & Guide" manual is supplied to the group leader (trip organizer). Included is a comprehensive daily itinerary, driver instructions and information about each part of your tour to enable you to provide entertaining commentary. Also included are checklists and reminders about daily tasks. The end-result is easy-flowing trip organisation, fewer issues and very happy tour participants. Overall it means less stress and a lot more fun for everyone.

If we are traveling as a group on an exclusive charter, will there be a tour manager or leader?

If a tour director is supplied in an example tour package it will be shown as an inclusion. But this is very flexible and if not included as standard, can be arranged if preferred. If you are part of a social group such as Probus, the trip organiser will often enjoy taking on this role. We provide comprehensive information and guidance for "hands-on" trip organisers. This includes a "how-to" guide and starter information about the places visited on the tour.

Can a tour be tailored to what our group is interested in?

Yes, definitely. All charter tour packages are simply "templates" as a starting point for customising a tour to suit. We then we apply the discounts available to you, your club or corporate group.

Will I be joining an existing shared tour or will this be exclusively for our group?

All tour packages are flexible. Various options are already published. (See the Pricing section for the tour you are interested in.) "Join departure" tour types are tours where you can join a tour group leaving on various departure dates. This suit couples and singles. If you represent a club or other group, please click the "Enquiry" button to request pricing for an exclusive charter to suit your group.

Are all listed activities included in the advertised tour packages or are they extra? Is there any more to pay?

See a list of standard inclusions on the package details page. Some packages have two or three different package classes with different inclusions. Select the optional package class to see included activities. Optional activities are shown separately. Your travel consultant will discuss optional activities with you so you can decide what to include or leave out of your itinerary. You can also swap and change activities. A price variance might apply.

What is the difference between "Self-guided", "Group-guided" and "Fully-guided" tours?

"Self-guided" (self-drive) is a trip designed for singles, couples and groups of up to 8 people (such as two to four couples) traveling together using a single car or 7 to 12-seater van depending on group size. It means that you drive yourself on the trip. "Group-guided" means the tour is for a larger group on a bus with a professional driver and the group leader (trip organizer) as tour director. A professional tour director can be supplied if required. A "fully-guided" bus tour is operated by a driver-guide or tour director. There are usually preset departures that you can join. Fully-guided tours can also be arranged exclusively for a group and this is called a "group charter".

Can I specify the type of accommodation I want?

We will recommend accommodation to meet your preferences. All accommodation is selected using our exclusive hotel rating system . You can then change the accommodation if preferred. Often you will also have a choice of accommodation types at the recommended accommodation properties. We'll find out your preferences in the early stages of planning your trip.

Christmas & Cocos Keeling Islands

  • You are here:

Christmas & Cocos Keeling Islands

They feel like they are overseas but still, a part of WA, Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling Islands, sometimes called Cocos Islands, are the must-visit destination. Situated between the North West Coast of WA and Indonesia, these two island destinations are truly magical.

With a holiday at Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling Islands, you'll feel a million miles away without going very far at all!

Virgin flies to the islands each Tuesday and Friday, first landing at Cocos Keeling Islands then Christmas Island and then returning to Perth. Extend your stay with a visit to both locations!

Cocos Keeling Island

WA Visitor Centre’s Traveller’s tips:

  • Hiring a car will help you explore the islands to their full as transport is very limited.
  • Booking tours before you arrive is a must as places fill quickly.
  • The islands rely on food from the mainland so menus can change without notice and it is not uncommon for only 1 restaurant to be open at a time. Contact the visitor centre for more information when you arrive.
  • You are welcome to bring your own food to the islands. Chat to us for more information.

Christmas Island is in the Indian Ocean, located 2600km north-west of Perth, Western Australia. In 1881 there was phosphate discovered, this drew settlers and workers from many backgrounds and religions creating the foundation of the fascinating cultural melting pot that the community is so proud of today.

The Island is the summit of a submarine mountain, the central plateau is dominated by stands of rainforest where over half of the island is a national park. It has 80 kilometres of coastline made predominantly of volcanic cliffs, there are a few bays of sand, the largest being the Island's only port at Flying Fish Cove. The Island is encircled with a coral reef. A nature lovers dream, where you can experience wildlife in abundance on land and in the sea. Christmas Island is known for its crabs, the annual red crab migration, which usually happens in October or November depending on the first rains, sees millions of crabs move from their forest homes to the coast to breed. It is such a significant event that roads are closed to allow for migration to happen.

The island is also known for it’s whale sharks, marine diversity and bird life.

The Cocos Keeling Islands are located approximately 2700km north west of Perth, Western Australia. The isolated archipelago provides some of the only unspoilt tropical islands in Australia as it consists of two atolls and 27 coral islands, only the two main islands (Home Island and West Island) are inhabited. The first group of settlers were brought to the islands in 1826, they were mostly of Malay decent with a number of people of Chinese, Papuan and Indian heritage. The people are now referred to as Cocos Malay. The breath-taking coral islands that form 'Cocos' create an almost perfect circle. The Islands have forests of tall palm trees that are bordered by clear immaculate sandy beaches with reefs just offshore that are host to an incredible array of marine life. They are your quintessential tropical island paradise, and it is less touristy than other destinations like Bali, Fiji or The Maldives. So, if you are looking for an untouched island paradise with warm weather and azure oceans, Cocos Keeling Islands are for you.

Red Crab Spawning Event

Please note that the exact date of the spawning tour as part of this package will be determined immediately prior to the spawning event. Participants will be contacted upon arrival if any changes are required to the date of operation of the spawning experience.

Details of the Migration

At the onset of Christmas Island's wet season (which can be early as mid November), the crabs are triggered to abandon their burrows on the top plateau and head down to the lower terraces for mating. Generally the males set off first, with the females following a few days or a week later.

This part of the migration is very unpredictable and dependent on the start and continuity of the seasonal rains. The migration may become sporadic or stop if the rain stops. If the conditions are right, the crabs can be viewed migrating in the mornings (before 10am) and in the later part of the afternoon (3.30pm onwards).

There are a few key locations close to the township where the crabs move and the Indian Ocean Experiences' team will advise you of these. There could be a window of 10-14 days of crabs on the move, again, dependent on the rains.

If you plan to travel for this part of the migration, we recommend a minimum 7 day stay to increase your chances of a successful viewing. Crabs may be viewed on a suite of Indian Ocean Experiences tours.

The Spawning

This element of the migration is predictable, as the female crabs need to drop their eggs into the sea using very specific tides, which can be predicted. There are generally two consecutive mornings in November and/or December. The dates change each year and where these tides fall in the month determines the greater likelihood of there being either a November or December spawning, or possibly both months.

The Red Crabs start dropping their eggs around 4am, and stop as the sun rises. Once they have delivered their spawn to the sea, they then head back up to the forest. Spawning tours can only be operated on the mornings of those specific dates. A shorter stay on the island is possible, depending on the flight options.

The Red Crab Migration Sequence

1) Males start migrating to the lower terraces and dig burrows (approx. 4 weeks prior to predicted spawning dates). 2) Females migrate to the lower terraces and mating takes place (approx. 2 weeks prior to spawning dates). 3) Males then leave the females in the burrows to gestate the egg mass and migrate back to the upper terraces. 4) Females deposit eggs into the ocean on the spawning dates and migrate back to the upper terraces.  5) Approx. 21 days after spawning event, baby red crabs may return en masse.

Testimonials

It is rare, in this day and age, to come upon a place so delightful in both looks and temperament that, on the very first sighting, one’s jaw does genuinely drop. Georgia Rickard Australian Traveller
If going with the flow is how you roll, you will love the Cocos Keeling Islands. They have a small – very small – country town vibe. Your activities revolve around the exquisite lagoon whether they be snorkelling, diving, fishing, parasailing, or just relaxing under a coconut palm reading a book while inhaling the frangipani infused air Steve Klein Curious Campers
Scuba diving at Cocos Keeling islands is nothing short of spectacular. Fabulous visibility, pristine coral reefs, abundant marine life and all the trappings of a tropical paradise without the flashy resorts. Yes, it is isolated and it takes some effort to get there, but this is more than offset by the quality of the diving, the friendly locals and the very laid back and relaxing ambience of the entire place. It is quirky, fun and a great place for a holiday. We will return and soon Phillip Tubb Melbourne
Don’t miss this place. My wife and I recently spent a fantastic week on Cocos Keeling Islands. We took the opportunity to take the twice weekly ferry service from West Island to Direction Island... we loved it so much we came back for a second time. Mike G Joondalup
Home Island is definitely quieter than West Island with religion a big part of daily life but the locals were so friendly and welcoming. It was so nice to be able to swim straight off the shore in amazing turquoise water while we cooked BBQs at sunset. Highly recommended! Pete

14 incredible days on Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Island hop between these extraordinary locations on an unforgettable 14-day adventure.

By Sue Gough Henly, Georgia Rickard

Get close to unique birdlife, bizarre crab migrations,  coral reefs , turtles and whale sharks on this 14-day itinerary. Go deep sea fishing and kitesurfing and relax on some of the world's most beautiful beaches. On these islands, closer to Asia than mainland Australia, you'll discover a distinctive Malay culture and dine on unique Chinese island cuisine. The ideal time to visit  Christmas Island  and the  Cocos (Keeling) Islands  is during the south-east wind season between April and November. This coincides with the annual red crab migration on Christmas Island (October to November) and the Hari Raya Puasa (end of Ramadan) cultural celebration on Home Island in the Cocos (Keeling) islands.

What to expect

  • See rare birdlife and an extraordinary crab migration
  • Bask on exquisite white sand beaches
  • Snorkel or dive on pristine, remote coral reefs
  • Time: 14 days
  • Distance: 1,000 kilometres (684 miles)
  • Transport: plane, boat, car and bike

14 incredible days on Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Day 1: Perth to Christmas Island

Take the four-hour flight from Perth to Christmas Island , 135 square kilometres (52 square miles) of steep cliffs, tropical rainforest, rare birdlife, national parks and crabs. Sir David Attenborough labelled Christmas Island the "kingdom of the crabs", and for good reason. This fascinating place is home to an abundance and diversity of land crabs not matched anywhere else on Earth. Tens of millions of endemic red crabs live here, and you'll see them everywhere: in trees, on footpaths, under boardwalks and on beaches. There are also another two dozen species to look out for, including endemic blue crabs (you'll find them inhabiting the island's wetlands), and the harmless, but enormous robber crabs. Named for their propensity to stealing anything that catches their eye, these colourful, basketball-sized creatures are often seen on forest floors and on the island's roads.

Pick up your hire car (4WD is essential as the roads outside the townships are unsealed) and drive to the island's main settlement (known simply as Settlement), where you'll check in to comfortable motel-style accommodation at  The Sunset . Then take the 10-minute drive to  Territory Day Park , which sits at the top of a mountain crest and offers spectacular views of Settlement and the popular adjacent swimming spot, Flying Fish Cove, below. Enjoy a two-kilometre (1.2-mile) return rainforest walk around the park and get your bearings before taking the 10-minute drive to  Tai Jin House , a grand manor that was originally the residence of the island's British administrator. You'll find a permanent exhibition detailing Christmas Island's fascinating history. Enjoy dinner with the locals at the  Golden Bosun Tavern , a relaxed pub by the water serving tap beer and affordable meals.

Day 2: Christmas Island

Today you'll explore Christmas Island's remarkable underwater world in the area's warm, translucent waters. Because the island is perched on the edge of the Java Trench (the Indian Ocean's deepest point), it offers some of the world's best wall dives in exquisitely clear water. Divers are likely to see large pelagic fish such as tuna, barracuda and reef sharks, as well as some of the 88 coral species and 600 fish species living here, spinner dolphins, and green and hawksbill turtles. Between November and April it's possible to swim with whale sharks on their annual migration. During the October to November's red crab migration – a sight that Sir David has called one of the most memorable moments of his television career, due to the millions of crabs that move down to the water like a giant red carpet – you can take a tour with  Indian Ocean Experiences  and watch the female crabs spawn. Afterwards, play golf on the lush fairways of the nine-hole  Christmas Island Golf Course . Or take a short, steep rugged walk to the Golf Course Lookout, where you can watch red footed boobies, endangered Christmas Island frigate birds and golden bosuns soar past as you admire the spectacular views along the north-east coast. Visit the nearby Mar Chor Nui Nui Temple facing out to sea and dedicated to the Sea Goddess. Enjoy dinner at the Chinese Literary Association, which is not a bookstore but a restaurant serving authentic Chinese fare. Christmas Island's population is 60 per cent Chinese.

Day 3: Christmas Island

Today you'll visit the remarkably pretty Dolly Beach. Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation, then pack a picnic and drive 16.5 kilometres (10 miles) to the beginning of the Dolly Beach walking track , where you'll take the leisurely one-kilometre (0.6-mile) boardwalk through rainforest to arrive at this special place. Dolly Beach is a powdery white stretch of sand framed by a dramatic grove of coconut palms and surrounded by shallow, azure waters complete with a coral reef. Pack a snorkel; you can borrow one at your accommodation. Be sure to take a dip in the natural rock pool in the middle of the beach (it's nicknamed Dolly Beach Spa for the gentle waves that swoosh into it, creating bubbles) and look out for the area's robber crabs as well as the turtles that nest here all year round. Afterwards, drive 11 kilometres (7 miles) south through the rainforest to the  Blowholes , where you'll see a dramatic natural performance. The waves here spurt upwards through hundreds of holes in the rocky coastline, creating airborne jets of water in a landscape of black rock pinnacles. Return to Settlement via the stunning  Margaret Knoll lookout , which offers panoramic views of the island's east coast and is a perfect site to watch seabirds soaring.

Day 4: Christmas Island

Hugh's Dale, The Dales, Christmas Island © Tourism Australia

Fifteen kilometres (nine miles) from your accommodation, you'll find the Dales, one of the few places on the island with permanent flowing water, providing a significant habitat for the island's endemic blue crabs. Take the boardwalk through Tahitian chestnut trees, strangler figs and banyan trees. On your way, look out for the blue crabs, which are an incredible sky blue colour, and follow the freshwater stream to Hughs Dale waterfall, where you can enjoy a shower (pictured). The Dales is one of Christmas Island's two Ramsar protected wetlands. If you are feeling adventurous, follow another trail from Hughs Dale to Andersons Dale, a small gorge with a stream that flows to the sea. After spending the day here, drive to nearby  Martin Point  for spectacular sunset views and loads of frigate (booby) birds.

Day 5: Christmas Island

Outdoor Cinema on Christmas Island © Tourism Australia

Spend the day  deep sea fishing  for big sailfish, tuna, marlin, swordfish and wahoo just a few hundred metres off shore from the boat launch at Flying Fish Cove. Back on land, cool off in the sandy-floored pool beneath a sunlit cave entrance at the Grotto, just a 10-minute drive from the Settlement. Enjoy an authentic Chinese meal at Lucky Ho outdoor restaurant in Poon Saan, and, if it's a Saturday, take in an evening movie under the warm, tropical sky at the  Outdoor Cinema .

Day 6: Christmas Island

Lily Beach, Christmas Island © Inger Van Dyke, Christmas Island Tourism

Pack a picnic and drive nine kilometres (six miles) to white coral Lily Beach, one of the island's most accessible and protected beaches, surrounded on both sides by cliffs. At low tide explore the rock pools or swim into the deeper blue water. After lunch stroll the 1.5-kilometre (0.9-mile) limestone karst-lined boardwalk to Ethel Beach. Along the way you'll likely see lots of nesting brown boobies with their fluffy white chicks at close range. These adorable birds are relatively unafraid of humans (and accustomed to cameras), so quietly snap some photos of this rare birdlife encounter, then hop back in your car and take the 20-kilometre (12.5-mile) drive to South Point. This once-thriving community of phosphate mine workers is now a ghost town, but you can see the historic railway station here and visit the Soon Tien Kong Temple, which islanders still visit to practise Chinese Taoism. Stay to catch the sunset before returning to Settlement and enjoy dinner at  Rumah Tinggi Bar and Grill . It's an upmarket restaurant housed in a heritage building on the oceanfront.

Day 7: Christmas Island

West White Beach, Christmas Island © Erica Harrison, Christmas Island Tourism

Pack a picnic lunch and drive the 30-minute 4WD track towards West White Beach on a tour with  Indian Ocean Experiences . From the car it's a solid one-hour walk with a short cliff descent (rope provided) to reach this secluded long beach edged by a series of rock pools, but well worth it. This is one of the most remote beaches on Earth, where few feet have stood. Make the most of the silence by beachcombing, watching the rock pools for tiny blenny fish that play, mate and chase each other, or watching the crabs that run to and fro in the wash.

Day 8: Christmas Island to Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Direction Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands © Cocos Keeling Islands Tourism Association

This afternoon you're flying to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands , so spend your morning doing some last minute shopping for Christmas Island art at the  Wild Papaya  gallery, and shopping for souvenirs at the  Visitor Information Centre  before boarding your 90-minute flight. You'll disembark directly onto the Cocos runway, in the middle of the West Island  golf course  – your first clue that the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are rather unusual. An almost perfect circular atoll of 27 islands, each blanketed with coconut palms and surrounded by white sand beaches, Cocos, as it's known to locals, is home to only two inhabited islands:  Home Island  and West Island. The airport is on West Island. Check in to your accommodation at Cocos Castaway on West Island and have a sunset drink at the Cocos Club before dinner in the beach garden at Tropika Restaurant, which serves a terrific buffet each night.

Day 9: Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Home Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands © Cocos Keeling Islands Tourism Association

Home Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands © Cocos Keeling Islands Tourism Association

On the opposite side of the atoll to West Island you'll find Home Island, where a small, unique indigenous population of about 450 Cocos Malay people live. The Cocos Malay people are believed to have been settled here in 1826 – as slaves and members of the harem of Alexander Hare, an English explorer – from various parts of Asia, predominantly Malaysia and Indonesia. Today, the Cocos Malay people speak a mixture of English, Malay and Cocos Malay, practise Sunni Islam and maintain their own unique dress code. A two-hour  cultural tour  of Home Island – only 20 minutes by ferry from West Island – offers fascinating insight into the way these friendly locals live. Discover Cocos Malay traditions, try basket weaving, learn a few Cocos Malay words and visit the museum. Cultural tours take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; the restaurant is open for lunch daily and dinner only on Wednesdays. You might consider timing your trip to the Cocos (Keeling) islands to coincide with the Hari Raya Puasa celebrations that mark the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, when visitors are invited to join locals in wandering from house to house in the Home Island streets, partaking in celebratory open feasts.

Day 10: Cocos (Keeling) Islands

On nearby  Direction Island  you'll find Cossies Beach, which, with its creamy white sands, palm-fringed edges and bright blue water, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. To get here, take the 30-minute ferry from West Island to Direction Island (Thursdays and Saturdays only) and orient yourself on the fascinating three-kilometre (1.9-mile) walk around the island. Hire snorkelling gear and receive a detailed brief on snorkelling the Rip before you board the ferry, back at West Island's Visitor Centre, or wait until day 12 when you'll snorkel the Rip with a guide on your dive excursion. This afternoon, join the locals for the Thursday afternoon game on the nine-hole golf course, the only golf course in the world located on an international runway. Then enjoy dinner at  Maxi's by the Sea .

Day 11: Cocos (Keeling) Islands

West Island is home to a relatively small population (about 100 people), but there's plenty to see and do. Start today with a takeaway coffee or chai latte from  Maxi's by the Sea , then embark on a motorised outrigger canoe safari exploring the southern islands of the huge lagoon, where you'll see lots of marine life including turtles, dolphins and tropical fish. The four to five-hour tour departs at different times each day (depending on the tide). You may find yourself enjoying a Champagne breakfast on a floating pontoon, learning about the islands’ history and culture, going snorkelling, strolling on deserted beaches, exploring some of the uninhabited islands and viewing turtle breeding sites. It is estimated there are 30,000 green and hawksbill turtles living in the middle of the atoll. Walk out to the end of West Island's town jetty on the north of the island in the late afternoon to see dozens of them swimming in the shallows. Have dinner this evening at the Flying Fish Cafe (located next to the Cocos Club), which serves fresh-out-of-the-sea tropical fish such as coral trout and sweet lip.

Day 12: Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The waters around Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a diver's paradise, and today you'll experience this first-hand on a dive with  Cocos Dive . There are more than 25 different dive sites around the atoll, including some with shipwrecks and historical artillery. Marine life that you might encounter includes sea fans, sea anemones, soft corals, black corals, manta rays, dolphins, sharks, moray eels, nudibranches, parrot fish, wrasse, and if you are lucky, the Cocos pygmy angelfish. You may also see Kat, the only dugong to make Cocos his permanent home; he arrived several years ago and has never left. After you've finished your morning dives you'll stop at Direction Island to enjoy a light lunch at Cossies Beach and a relaxed snorkel at the Rip with your guide before enjoying another dive. At the end of your day you'll be returned to West Island. Head to Tropika Restaurant to enjoy another buffet dinner of Cocos Malay and Western dishes.

Day 13: Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands is one of the best kitesurfing locations in Australia. If you are visiting when the south-east trade winds are blowing, from July to October, join a  kitesurfing clinic . Beginners can learn all the basic safety techniques in flat shallow water, where you can simply stand up if you fall over, while more experienced kitesurfers can practise how to jump higher and do back and front rolls. If it's not kitesurfing season, try your hand at fishing – you can buy hooks and handlines at the Visitor Centre, where you'll also be provided with tips on the best spots to fish that day. Alternatively, dedicated fly fishers will be pleased to know this is one of the best places on Earth to practise bonefish fly fishing. December to March is peak season for this, but fish can be caught all year round. Simply bring your own equipment and you can fish from the shore. As the day moves towards its end, head to "the old jetty", on the north end of West Island, where you can usually spot a variety of larger marine animals swimming around its base, including giant trevally, reef sharks, manta rays and lots of turtles. If you've managed to catch anything, cook your catch for dinner at one of the barbecues at Trannies Beach, the Spot Beach or the Gun Club Beach - there are free public barbecues at almost every beach on West Island, but these three offer great views of the setting sun each day. Alternatively, enjoy the locals' Sunday special at the Cocos Club – it might be pizza, hamburgers or something else altogether.

Day 14: Cocos (Keeling) Islands

Spend your final day exploring West Island at your own speed. Most accommodation offers bicycles, but if you prefer you can hire a car or scooter from Cocos Autos Car Hire in town. Next, head to the Visitor Centre to hire some snorkelling gear, then set out for the day: West Island is just 14 kilometres (nine miles) in length and ringed with beaches worth exploring. As you make your way to the northern end of the island, be sure to stop at Trannies Beach or Pulu Maria Beach, both of which have shallow reefs that are perfect for using your snorkel. The Big Barge Art Centre is a community art space that is a work of art itself. It's housed inside a restored wooden copra boat, and inside you'll find the work of local artists that you can admire and buy if you so wish. Owner and artist Emma Washer offers regular art classes here, though you'll need to  pre-arrange  one. Afterwards, return to town for a final drink at Cocos Club, where you can toast the sunset one last time and vow to return.

If you fancy a holiday that encompasses both adventure and relaxation then these islands are for you. Whether it is enjoying the white sandy beaches of the reef-fringed atoll on the beautiful Cocos (Keeling) Islands or spending time discovering the pristine jungle, picturesque coastline or engaging with the wild life on Christmas Island, these islands will not disappoint!

Cocos (Keeling) Islands offer much in the way of water-based activities. With their stunning lagoon, surrounded by a horseshoe shaped ring of islands, a ferry trip will get you from West Island to Direction Island twice a week, Home Island daily, except Sundays,  and an adventure on a motorised canoe will allow you to island-hop amongst the small islands in the Southern part of the lagoon. Home Island offers a unique insight into Cocos Malay living and culture, through the museum or a wander around the grounds of Oceania House, the old Clunies-Ross mansion.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands offers a slow-paced holiday, with places to explore which you will likely have completely to yourself, or mix with the locals to experience life in one of the remotest outcrops in Australia.

Christmas Island is the remnant tip of an old extinct volcano – having more in common with a lost Galapagos than your typical palm-fringed tropical island. Rugged coastline, lush jungle where only a sprinkle of light penetrates the thick canopy, endemic plants – and our ubiquitous crab life, definitely give you the feeling of being in your own National Geographic  documentary.  Our mixed community of Chinese, Malay & Europeans is a slice of South-East Asia without having to leave Australia. Noodle shops, roti cafés and pub grub has your culinary experience covered. Our culture is alive and easily incorporated into an authentic experience by timing your visit with a God’s Birthday party at a temple, or at the end of Ramadan when the Kampong is lit up with twinkling lights.

Our dual island package ensures you get the best out of Australia’s Indian Ocean Islands.

Our Recommendation: On Christmas Island, book an extra half day tour or a snorkelling trip. On Cocos – add a turtle tour to round out your lagoon experience or the underwater scooter tour.
