List of Carnival Cruise Directors by Ship for August and September 2023

by Prof. Cruise · August 2, 2023

A cartoon "cruise director" with text that reads: List of Carnival cruise directors by ship for Aug and Sept 2023.

One of the most common questions I receive and see asked on cruise boards and social media sites is: Who will my cruise director be? To which there are always several follow up questions asked by new cruisers to the effect of: What the heck is a cruise director? Well I’m here to answer both of those questions! First…

What does a Cruise Director do?

Besides not sleep, smile through exhaustion and frustration, and dish out almost as many corny jokes as yours truly? Quite a lot! In fact, cruise directors are the most visible crew members onboard a cruise ship and often work up to 16 hours per day with no days off during their contract period (usually lasting around 4 months, but up to 9 months in some cases). While passengers will see them constantly out and about introducing shows, MC’ing activities and events, and interacting with guests, they are also responsible for behind-the-scenes scheduling and coordination of all entertainment and activities and certain safety protocols.

Many regular Carnival cruisers have a favorite cruise director they look forward to sailing with. So, let’s get to our second question, who will the cruise director be on my Carnival cruise?

Who will the Cruise Director be on my upcoming Carnival Cruise?

Wondering who the cruise director will be on your upcoming Carnival cruise? Find the list of cruise directors by ship for the months of August and September 2023 here.

Important notes: * There is usually a week of overlap in the contracts of a current cruise director and their replacement. So, if you’re booked on the last sailing of a certain cruise director, you may actually see more of their replacement who is gearing up to take over. I’ve noted the exact “sign-off” and “sign-on” dates during August and September for each cruise director where there is overlap. ** While I try my best to keep this up-to-date, schedules sometimes change at the last minute, so I can’t guarantee this will always be 100% accurate. If you need 100% certainty as to who your cruise director will be, I recommend asking John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, via the “community” tab on his Facebook page a week or so before your sailing date. ***All photos courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Fleet Overview

I’m excited to learn more about the Carnival fleet and which ships have which cruise directors on the 2023 schedule!

Carnival operates a fleet of 24 ships, each with its own unique style and personality. From the Mardi Gras and Carnival Miracle to the Carnival Radiance and Carnival Valor, there’s a ship to suit every traveler’s needs.

Some of the top Carnival cruise destinations include the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Bahamas, with ports of call in popular destinations like Cozumel, Nassau, and Grand Cayman. With so many ships and destinations to choose from, guests are sure to find the perfect itinerary for their dream vacation.

And with the cruise directors bringing their engaging personalities and talents to each ship, guests are in for an unforgettable experience.

Cruise Director Role

Managing the entertainment team and closely collaborating with the hotel director and entertainers, my role as a cruise director is crucial to ensuring every guest has an unforgettable experience onboard.

As a cruise director, I’m responsible for hosting various events like trivia contests, gameshows, and deck parties. However, my role is not limited to just hosting events. I also act as a liaison between the guests and the ship’s crew, ensuring that all their needs and concerns are addressed promptly.

Cruise director job satisfaction is high as it’s an exciting and rewarding job where I get to travel the world and meet new people every day. However, it’s not without its challenges. One of the most significant challenges faced by cruise directors is managing the entertainment team and ensuring that they deliver high-quality performances consistently.

Additionally, it can be challenging to deal with unforeseen circumstances such as adverse weather conditions or unexpected changes to the itinerary. Despite these challenges, being a cruise director is a fulfilling job, and I take pride in ensuring that every guest has a memorable experience onboard.

Cruise Director Salary and Benefits

Receiving free travel, food, and accommodation, as well as other benefits, is one of the perks of being a cruise director at Carnival Cruise Lines.

As for my salary, it’s around $60,000 per year. Of course, the salary varies depending on the level of experience and the size of the ship one is working on. But even with the lower end of the salary range, the benefits that come with the job are already a great deal.

However, being a cruise director is not just about the salary and the benefits. It’s a job that requires hard work, dedication, and passion for entertaining people. It’s a job that demands one to have excellent communication skills, creativity, and the ability to work well under pressure.

So, is it worth the job? If you love traveling, meeting new people, and making a difference in someone’s vacation, then it definitely is. And if you’re interested in becoming a Carnival Cruise Director, my tip is to gain experience in the entertainment industry, build a strong network, and showcase your skills and personality in your application.

Cruise Director Personality Traits

Being a successful cruise director requires having a personality that shines as bright as the sun. It’s not just about hosting events and making announcements, but also about creating a memorable experience for every guest.

Here are some personality traits and job requirements that make a great cruise director:

  • Engaging: A cruise director needs to be able to connect with people from all walks of life and keep them entertained throughout their trip.
  • Energetic: The job often requires long hours and the ability to keep up with a busy schedule of events and activities.
  • Talented: Cruise directors may need to have skills in areas such as singing, dancing, or comedy to add an extra level of entertainment to their events.
  • Charismatic: A great cruise director has the ability to make guests feel special and create a sense of community on board the ship.

In addition to these traits, a successful cruise director must also be able to work closely with the rest of the ship’s staff, including the entertainment team and hotel director. They must be able to manage their time effectively and handle unexpected situations with grace and professionalism.

With the right combination of skills and personality traits, a cruise director can create a truly unforgettable experience for every guest.

To do this, I organize and host various events like trivia contests, gameshows, and deck parties that cater to different age groups and interests. I also make sure that all guests feel welcome and included by being approachable, friendly, and accommodating.

If you’re going on a Carnival cruise, here are some tips for getting the most out of your cruise director:

  • Follow your favorite director on social media to stay updated on their schedule and activities.
  • Be open to last-minute changes in the schedule, as they’re sometimes necessary to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all guests.

Carnival Legend Itineraries

Carnival legend review, review of carnival legend.

The 2002-built Carnival Legend cruise ship is the 3rd of four Spirit-class CCL liners, with sisterships the fleetmates Miracle , Spirit and Pride , as well as Costa 's liners Atlantica and Mediterranea .

CCL Legend was last refurbished in 2018 and extensively in 2014 - before its debut on the Australian market.

The vessel (IMO number 9224726) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 229857000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

The 2124-passenger ship Carnival Legend introduced some significant firsts for the company, including onboard wedding chapels and alternative restaurants. Spirit-class ships also boast an impressive 80% ratio of outside cabins and lots of nice little touches such as 'designer' martinis and museum-quality artwork.

Legend's US$47 million refurbishment in 2014 added the Australian-only slide Green Thunder, Splashdown kids' waterslides and drenching bucket, Bonsai Sushi restaurant, Serenity Retreat for adults, Cherry on Top candy store, RedFrog Pub and brand new Aussie beers (including the Thirsty Frog Summer Ale).

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Legend staterooms (1062 total, in 28 categories) include 50 Suites, 634 Balcony, 171 Oceanview and 215 Inside cabins. The ship has 17 wheelchair-accessible cabins but no Spa cabins. On May 6, 2013, was announced that starting September 2014, Legend becomes the second Carnival Australia ship. The vessel was seasonally deployed (since September 24, 2014) to Sydney NSW, joining there Carnival Spirit (deployed permanently to Australia since 2012). Carnival Legend started its schedule from Sydney Harbour with a maiden Australian voyage on September 24, 2014. The 2014 Australian program included roundtrips to the Pacific Islands (8- to 12-day long itineraries). Carnival Australia cruise deals were available for booking in June 2013. The vessel became the newest and largest Carnival ship homeported in Sydney AU. The ship entered dry dock for refurbishment works in 2014 (Jan-Feb) in order to be “Aussified” accordingly.

In May 2016, Carnival Australia officially confirmed Carnival Legend's homeporting in Melbourne in 2018 (February-March) for a total of 16 roundtrip itineraries. In the period February 6 - March 24, the liner operated on roundtrips from Station Pier. The scheduled itineraries ranged from 3-day short breaks ( Cruise to Nowhere ) to 4-day Tasmania, 10-day South Pacific Islands (New Caledonia and Vanuatu) and 11-day Around New Zealand. For the last time, Carnival Australia homeported a ship in Melbourne Victoria in 2013.

In October 2019, the ship was homeported in Tampa Bay Florida, replacing Carnival Miracle .

  • From Tampa were offered 7-day Western Caribbean roundtrips to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Roatan, with Belize or Costa Maya.
  • On January 25, 2020, departed the 8-day voyage including a partial Panama Canal transit, with visits to Limon and Grand Cayman.

In 2020, Carnival Legend was scheduled for deployment in Europe (9- to 16-day itineraries) visiting 34 different ports in 16 countries.

  • Legend's inaugural European season (2020) had to start with a 16-day Transatlantic crossing (NYC to Dover/June 3-19) visiting Qaqortoq (Greenland), Reykjavik (Iceland), Lerwick (Shetland Islands) and Ireland (Belfast, Cobh- Cork).
  • 9-day "Norwegian Fjords" roundtrip from Dover (June 19-28) visited Norway (Bergen, Olden, Molde, Trondheim, Alesund, Stavanger).

The European season 2020 was planned to end with a 16-day Transatlantic crossing (Barcelona-Tampa/Oct 30 - Nov 15) visiting Malaga, Funchal Madeira, Tenerife Canaries, Antigua, Puerto Rico, and Dominicana (Amber Cove).

However, all these plans were canceled due to the pandemic. The boat restarted operations in November 2021, with homeporting in Baltimore and roundtrips visiting Bermuda (6-day), Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas (7-day, 8-day), Southern Caribbean (14-day), as well as Gatun Lake-Panama Canal (14-day)

Carnival Legend's European program was eventually rescheduled for 2024 (17 voyages, homeports Barcelona, Civitavecchia-Rome, Dover-London) followed by a new USA-Caribbean program with homeporting in Tampa FL. Europe 2024 schedule started on April 15th (12-day Transatlantic crossing Baltimore to Barcelona via the Azores) and ended on October 26th (15-day Transatlantic from Rome to Tampa via Madeira and Azores).

In September 2021 CCL announced Carnival Legend's unique voyage from the USA to Greenland.

  • The 14-night "Greenland and Canada" roundtrip from Baltimore is in 2023 (September 2-16). This ever-first for CCL itinerary to Greenland visits Nanortalik and Qaqortoq , as well as Canada's St. Anthony NF ,  Corner Brook NF and Sydney NS , and features 8 sea days.
  • Curiously, as the North Atlantic cruise was sold out within just 24 hours, on the next week CCL added a second 2-week long crossing from the USA to Greenland and Canada (departure August 13, 2023, roundtrip from Baltimore, same itinerary/call ports) with prices starting from USD 2100 pp (inside cabin with double occupancy) and USD 3000 pp (balcony cabins).

Carnival Legend Wiki

The Carnival ship Legend is of the company's Spirit-class liners, with sisterships the fleetmates Miracle , Pride , Spirit , and also Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea . When debuted in August 2002, Carnival Legend was the first-ever "Fun Ship" with an onboard wedding chapel and alternative options for dining. From New York, the ship was repositioned to Tampa Florida and since September 2014 started its Australian cruise program.

In 2021 (July-August) the ship entered drydock at Chantier Naval de Marseille ( Marseille France ) for regular maintenance and hull repainting (colors change).

“When our guests board a Carnival cruise, they look forward to the unparalleled entertainment they can experience all day every day, and our cruise director and entertainment director duo are at the core of that fun,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line. “The Carnival Radiance is our newest Fun Ship, and we know that Ryan and Bradley are the perfect team to bring this beautiful new vessel to life.”

The Carnival Radiance will make her Southern California debut on Monday, Dec. 13, kicking off a year-round schedule of Baja Mexico cruises from the Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

She features all of the line’s popular Fun Ship 2.0 dining, beverage and entertainment spaces as well as Big Chicken, the second seagoing restaurant created by Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal that debuted on the Mardi Gras earlier this year. Lucille O’Neal, Shaq’s mom, will serve as the Carnival Radiance’s godmother.
