Classe 1981, Raphael Gualazzi è cantautore, compositore, arrangiatore, musicista e produttore. Dopo gli studi classici al Conservatorio ha sempre sperimentato diversi generi musicali, dando vita ad uno stile personalissimo, tra stride piano, jazz, blues e fusion.

Gualazzi ha partecipato ai più rinomati festival d’Europa (tra cui l’”International Jazz Day”, presso la sede UNESCO di Parigi, il “Saint Germain Jazz” di Parigi, il “Dìa de la Musica” di Madrid, l’Italian Innovation Day a Bruxelles, testimonial del made in Italy di successo all’estero), ha segnato sold out in Italia e all’estero sempre con formazioni di musicisti internazionali, arrivando a conquistare anche il Giappone e il Canada. Nel 2011, già noto in Francia, ha trionfato al Festival di Sanremo nella categoria Giovani con il brano “Follia d’amore”: primo posto, Premio della Critica “Mia Martini”, premio della Sala Stampa Radio e Tv, Premio Assomusica per la migliore esibizione live. E al successivo all’Eurovision Song Contest ha ottenuto il secondo posto con “Madness of Love”. Sul palco dell’Ariston è tornato altre due volte, sempre con grande successo di pubblico e critica: nel 2013 con “Sai (ci basta un sogno)” (quinto) e nel 2014 insieme a The Bloody Beetroots, con un progetto inedito che ha fuso jazz, elettronica, blues e gospel (medaglia d’argento con “Liberi o no”).

Quattro album all’attivo e tre Ep in Italia, Gualazzi ha pubblicato in tutto il mondo (sempre con la Sugar), dalla Francia alla Germania, fino al Giappone (dove, nel 2018 è uscito “Best of”, una raccolta di successi contenuti nei suoi tre precedenti dischi). Il suo ultimo lavoro, “Love Life Peace”, ha conquistato il Disco D’Oro e il suo singolo di traino “L’estate di John Wayne” è stato in vetta alle classifiche radiofoniche per settimane fino ad arrivare ad ottenere la certificazione del Disco di Platino. Gualazzi ha composto anche per la tv e per il cinema. E’ autore di testo e musica, oltre che interprete al pianoforte, di “Vertigo”, brano contenuto nell’album “Sì” di Andrea Bocelli, candidato ai prossimi Grammy Awards.

A febbraio 2020 è uscito il suo nuovo album “Ho un Piano”, contenente la hit sanremese “Carioca”.

Dopo un’intensa attività live nell’estate 2021, con oltre 20 date in tutta Italia tra recital in piano solo e concerti in trio, il 23 novembre, data del centenario della nascita di Fred Buscaglione, Gualazzi ha pubblicato un EP di tributo in cui reinterpreta 5 brani del grande musicista e attore piemontese.

Il 10 giugno 2022 è uscito il suo ultimo album “Bar Del Sole” per Sugar, disco nel quale Raphael ha reinterpretato 10 brani tra classici e chicche meno conosciute del repertorio cantautorale italiano, da Battisti a Graziani, Lauzi, Morandi, Ornella Vanoni e altri. Il progetto è stato co-prodotto interamente da Vittorio Cosma. Dopo l’uscita dell’album è seguito il tour estivo che lo ha portato in giro per l’Italia.

A ottobre 2022 Gualazzi è volato in Sud Africa, precisamente a Cape Town, Durban e Johannesburg, dove ha tenuto tre concerti organizzati dall’Istituto Italiano di Cultura e dall’Ambasciata Italiana locale.

A marzo 2023 debutta dal vivo in Argentina, con un concerto al Centro Cultural Nueva Uriarte di Buenos Aires in cui si esibisce con dei musicisti locali.

Gualazzi ha composto e interpretato “Il Giro”, la canzone che accompagna lo spot Rai del Giro D’Italia 2023, in rotazione sui canali Rai da fine aprile.

Per l’estate 2023 è previsto un tour che porterà Gualazzi nelle principali località Italiane, oltre ad alcune date in Europa – AthensJazz ad Atene, Preveza Jazz Festival a Preveza (Grecia) e Summertime Music Festival a Jurmala (Lettonia).

Un nuovo progetto discografico è previsto in uscita per l’autunno 2023.

Because of artists like Rapheal Gualazzi we are able to go through a portal to other worlds and times of music experience. Gualazzi’s career incorporates a broad range of sounds. Gualazzi gives life back to and pays homage to classic piano rag, 20s pop standards, Nino Rota inspired melodies and early jazz swing.

Gualazzi is perhaps the most accomplished and technically gifted pianist I have seen and in addition to the clockwork precision he exhibits throughout his performances he adds a level of expression that cannot be simulated. He is truly a miracle to see at work. He not only performs piano pieces that would threaten the most dextrous concert pianists, he sings on top of these incredibly challenging pieces. The interworking between his vocal and instrumental performance seems to feed off of the others energy culminating in an unrelinquishing display of musicality.

Gualazzi is also an incredibly versatile performer and writer. He can play solo pieces that absolutely mesmerize the audience with his great speed and precision and can refrain the verbosity of his performance to work with accompanying musicians like an upright bass player and drummer. He updates vaudeville style piano themes as heard on “Reality and Fantasy” with darkly intense scatting which could draw comparison to expressionistic performers like Tom Waits. Gualazzi shows no hesitation in embracing more confine pop structures. “A Three Second Breath” shows his proficiency as a pop artist and a skillful singer. At his shows you might even hear him perform a Duke Ellington cover one minute and then a Fleetwood Mac cover the next. Almost anything seems fair game at a Gualazzi concert.

Cantautore e pianista, Raphael Gualazzi vinse la sezione Giovani al Festival di Sanremo nel 2011 che lo catapultò nel panorama musicale italiano e internazionale. Uno dei più abili musicisti jazz-blues italiani, dal sound autentico che ricorda i grandi della musica come Steve Wonder e Ben Harper a cui si ispira.

A C T   O N E  SCENE 1

Dr Silbergaus hosts a Christmas Eve party for his daughter Clara.  The guest of honour is Clara’s Godfather Drosselmeyer, arriving with gifts for the young girl, including a book entitled The Nutcracker & the Mouse King.  Clara becomes enthralled with the book as other guests arrive and admire the Christmas tree. Drosselmeyer appears as Santa Clause, with toys for the children and carnival masks for the adults.  Later, he surprises everyone by appearing as a magician.   He orders mechanical toys to be brought into the room.  At the wave of his wand, three puppets appear – a Nutcracker, a Doll, and a Mouse King.  

The Nutcracker starts dancing declaring he can gain victory over everyone.  Everybody joins in the dancing, except Clara who watches the Mouse King come to life and challenge the Nutcracker for the right to dance with the Doll. The Nutcracker and Mouse King are soon fighting, and Clara realises this is just what she read in her book.  The Doll throws a slipper at the fighting pair, who stop just as Drosselmeyer re-appears.  The guests congratulate him on a wonderful show.   Clara’s brother Fritz challenges the Nutcracker to a duel.   In the ensuing fight, the Nutcracker is wounded. Fritz is punished, and the toys are covered up.   Clara is comforted by her Godfather, who tells her that she will see more later that night.   

The guests depart, thanking the host Dr. Silbergaus.  Clara sits in her darkened room with the damaged Nutcracker.  She wonders what her Godfather had meant ….what surprises will be in store for her.   Soon she is awakened by a strange rattling noise. “Mice,” thinks Clara. But these are not ordinary mice they are dressed to celebrate Christmas.  She tries to escape when the clock strikes midnight, the mice are still and Clara sees her Godfather sitting on top of the clock. When she begs him for help Drosselmeyer takes her in his arms.   

As the Christmas tree begins to grow, the Nutcracker comes back to life. He leaps to his feet and calls upon his friends to help fight the mice.  An army of toy soldiers appear.  At the height of the battle, Clara hurls her slipper it at the Mouse King who is knocked down.   Clara faints.   As darkness returns, Drosselmeyer covers Clara and the Nutcracker with a shawl. Minutes later, Clara reawakens to find she has become a beautiful Princess and as her Godfather lifts the shawl, she sees the Nutcracker has turned into a handsome Prince.  She is overcome with joy and hugs her Godfather as the Prince beckons her to follow him.

As Clara sleeps, Drosselmeyer appears and transforms the room into a pine forest.  It starts to snow and Clara awakens and stares in amazement at the magical sight.

Drosselmeyer appears and completes the transformation – flowers appear everywhere.

Clara arrives with the Nutcracker Prince.   She is overjoyed but fails to notice that Drosselmeyer has transformed himself into a young man.  The Flower Fairy appears and hears the Nutcracker boast about his defeat of the Mouse King.   Drosselmeyer is upset by this and once again conjures up the Mouse King.  The fight resumes and the Nutcracker faces defeat.   Clara begs her Godfather to help and with a final wave of his wand a crown of flowers appears on the Mouse King’s head!   The Nutcracker thanks Drosselmeyer for his help and they both ask Clara to dance.  Amazed to see how similar they now look, Clara chooses to dance with the Nutcracker.   Her Godfather feels rejected and turns himself back into the Magician.    Dawn breaks and as the Kingdom of the Flowers fades, Clara finds herself back in the family living room.   She rushes to uncover the Nutcracker but under the clock she finds only a basket of flowers.

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
