Here are a few things to consider while putting together weekend trips from Cincinnati:

The Weather

The season you are traveling in can make a difference in pricing, activities, and events. Cincinnati locals are familiar with it being 20 degrees in the morning and 68 degrees that afternoon. Winter weather can close many hiking trails in Hocking Hills, while the 4th of July weekend is one of the busiest for amusement parks such as Cedar Point.

Weekend trips from Cincinnati don’t have to break the bank. Many nearby destinations offer an abundance of free activities. Depending on your traveling party’s number of people, things can get pricey quickly. If there is a particular destination or hotel you are looking at staying at, start following them on social media or sign up for their newsletters to receive discounts or deals. For example, the Mohican’s Treehouse Resort will offer last-minute treehouse deals at half the cost!

Feel free to search Groupon for deals as well. Great Wolf Lodge will often put out a winter deal once a year for those who can visit during the week.

Once you're on the island, head to The Loren at Pink Beach if you're in the mood for a little solitude. The property's one- and three-bedroom villas have their own private pools, making them prime spots for lounging and sipping on Bermuda's famed rum swizzles.

The South Fork of Long Island (aka the Hamptons and Montauk) may be buzzier, but for a more low-key, quiet, and down-to-earth alternative, head to the North Fork. Oysters at Little Creek Oyster Farm in Greenport are a must, as are the homemade pies at Briermere Farms in Riverhead. Then spend your afternoons visiting the area's many wineries, such as Bedell, Sparkling Pointe, and Kontokosta before retiring to the Sound View Greenport , a chic hotel where every room looks out onto the Long Island Sound and has direct access to the private beach.

Drive the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway on your way to Asheville—the fall foliage is particularly spectacular, though the views are majestic no matter the season. There, you'll want to spend plenty of time at the impressive Biltmore Estate, the largest private home in the country, built by George Vanderbilt at the end of the 19th century. While you can't stay in the home itself, you can stay on the property at the Inn on Biltmore Estate , which grants you access to the Biltmore gardens, Antler Hill Village, and the Biltmore Winery.

When the Asbury Hotel opened in 2016, it promised to bring about a much classier era to the oft-maligned Jersey Shore—and, in particular, the city of Asbury Park. It's just an hour away from New York City, but will feel like a proper vacation. Aside from the beach, which is a block away, the Asbury has plenty of al fresco spaces fit for play, including an expansive rooftop space that screens outdoor movies.

Two stand up paddle boarders on misty morning Taken off the mountainous coast of Catalina Island California

Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

Take the one-hour journey to this island 22 miles or so off the coast via the Catalina Express ferry , which departs from San Pedro, Long Beach, or Dana Point daily; once you’re here, biking and walking are the main transport modes (or you can rent a golf cart for longer drives). Catalina Island is a startling contrast to the mainland, with more than a whiff of East Coast hideouts like Nantucket: Start at the quaint main town, Avalon, and gorge on seafood that’s barely minutes from the water—try Bluewater Grill , right on the dock.

Then head inland to El Rancho Escondido , which earned acclaim for its Arabian horse-breeding program. The ponies are gone now, though, and much of the land has been deeded over to vines, where Rusack Vineyards focuses on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Outdoorsy types can hike the entire length of the 38.5-mile Trans Catalina Trail in about four days, too, with campgrounds for overnighting along the route. The Bellanca Hotel in Avalon is the plushest perch if you’d rather have someone else make your bed—or sleep in a bed, period.

Best Weekend Getaways Palm Springs CA

Palm Springs

Palm Springs, California

Around 50 percent of the locals in this Coachella Valley hub identify as LGBTQ+, adding appeal for any open-minded, easy-going visitor. The main drag of gay bars, along Arenas Road, is a rollicking night out for anyone—and just 90 mins from Los Angeles , as long as you avoid the peak times for the drive, like Friday evenings. Come here, too, to explore the design style which was popular when Palm Springs was in its heyday: Midcentury modernism is celebrated everywhere, from antique stores specializing in sleek Danish sofas to the soon-to-open Modernism Museum, which will include installations like a 1950s-era RV, plus a gift shop (of course). Dive deeper into the history of this style via a three-hour tour with architectural historian and author Michael Stern , which includes the chance to visit private homes. Among the countless hotels decked out in midcentury-modern stylings for an overnight, the Parker Palm Springs remains the standout—a riot of color and witty touches from designer Jonathan Adler.

Just 20 years ago, there were about 50 wineries in and around this charming small town just over three hours from LA; now there are more than 300, and the area’s becoming more widely known for its fine Pinot Noirs and Zinfandels. The self-guided tour run by the Paso Wine Country Alliance is the quickest way to zip between vineyards, but it’s worth hiring local guide Coy Barnes, aka the Wine Wrangler , to drive you for the day if you’re keen to quaff at every tasting room. Some rooms at the Paso Robles Inn have hot tubs on their balconies (a nod to the town’s origins as a spa center) that are fed by water piped in from nearby hot springs.

Hotel Del Coronado San Diego California

San Diego, California

Beaches and green spaces are the defining assets of San Diego , just under a two-hour drive south of LA. There’s the 1,750-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve —kayak through the wetlands for an up-close view—and a namesake golf course with two 18-hole championship courses perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific; stay at the Arts & Crafts-style Lodge at Torrey Pines , right by the 18 th green. San Diego has 75 miles of coastline, featuring plenty of noteworthy beaches , most of them studded with surfers—hit Moonlight State Beach if you want to head out on the water, rent fishing gear, or snap a shot with the iconic Hotel Del Coronado as a backdrop from Coronado Beach. And even if San Diego has 24/7 beach weather, don’t forget: This is the Christmas Capital of America .

From Chicago

Saugatuck Michigan

Southwest Michigan

Saugatuck and its surroundings in Southwest Michigan have recently attracted newcomers due to a focus on the state’s extraordinary produce (Michigan is second only to California in agricultural diversity). Drive two and a half hours to eat at the delicious, diner-like Pennyroyal Cafe & Provisions from chef Melissa Corey, or taste some of the estate-grown vintages at Modales Wines . Work off your meal with a bracing hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for spectacular views. You’ll find all that in this corner of Michigan, plus the perennial bonus of gleaming beaches, charming all-American coastal towns, and the best sundowner spots in the state overlooking the lush waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

It might be three hours north of the city, but a trip here is like stepping decades into the past for a miles-long strip of world-class water parks. The Dells emerged as a family-friendly destination in the 1950s and has changed little since then. The best-known fun fest is the Kalahari , a resort with Master Blaster uphill water coasters plus an outdoor lazy river; but purists vouch for nearby Noah’s Ark , which boasts the largest number of water slides in the area. There are outdoorsy options for an adrenaline-powered weekend, too, like the six-acre, zip-line-filled Chula Vista Resort park. Just save room for some cheese curds—the best come from Carr Valley.

Lake Geneva Wisconsin

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Just 90 minutes north of Chicago , this resort town is the Midwest’s answer to the Hamptons or Newport , made famous by the iconic families that helped build the Windy City (think Wrigley and Sears). The waterfront offers public access for more than 20 miles, thanks to an early treaty that ring-fenced the Shore Path from any development. Otherwise, expect ritzy Gilded Age mansions and over-the-top hotels like the magnificent Queen Anne-style Black Point Estate and Gardens , now a museum, or the turreted Baker House , ranked one of the town’s best hotels. Don’t assume it’s solely a warm-weather destination, though: Winterfest in January and February is a charming, less-trafficked option than midsummer.

Door County Wisconsin

Cave Point in Door County

Door County, Wisconsin

Much like Cape Cod curls into the Atlantic, this 75-mile peninsula juts into Lake Michigan like a raised finger, and it shares much with its New England counterpart. First emerging as an artsy summer colony, it has sandy, family-friendly beaches—more than 50 public ones—and 300 miles of shoreline. Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes. Make this a long weekend, as it’s almost a four-hour drive from Chicago, and don’t leave without making a pilgrimage to the Swedish restaurant Al Johnson’s , famous for the herd of goats grazing on its grassy roof.

From Washington, D.C.

Boonsboro Maryland

Crystal Grottoes in Boonsboro

Boonsboro, Maryland

A little over an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. , Boonsboro combines natural wonders with a sobering role in American history. Explore the stalactite-crusted Crystal Grottoes here—the Fairyland cave’s red tinge is thanks to iron oxide—or go whitewater rafting and tubing in the waters near Harpers Ferry. Then squeeze in a trip to the site of Antietam, the bloodiest battle on U.S. soil where 23,000 Civil War soldiers were killed or wounded within just 12 hours of fighting in 1862. Planning a romantic weekend? Nowhere better to overnight than Inn Boonsboro , owned by novelist Nora Roberts, where each of the eight rooms is named after a fictional couple like The Princess Bride’s Westley and Buttercup.

Alexandria Virginia

Alexandria, Virginia

It might only be a 20-minute drive away—or shorter, if you hop on the metro—but this historic town still feels like a getaway and consistently ranks among the top five small cities in the country in our Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s easy to see why: Historic architecture and cobbled streets are a glimpse back past the American Revolution to European settlers’ earliest days. Board the replica 18th-century, 110-foot sloop Providence, a Pirates of the Caribbean prop now moored here as a museum, or head to the Del Ray neighborhood for an assortment of street art that shows the city isn’t simply resting on the past. Stay at the Alexandrian, an Autograph Collection hotel right in the center of Old Town that overlooks the river from National Harbor.

Cape Hatteras North Carolina

Bodie Island Light Station in Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

It’s a long drive—around six hours—Cape Hatteras is still one of the best weekend getaways from D.C., thanks to the astonishing views and bracing air of the Outer Banks . The 70-mile-long National Seashore here was the first in the country and is anchored by the landmark Bodie Island Light Station, the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. with more than 200 stairs. Head to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum for a glimpse as to why these waters earned that nickname—more than 600 shipwrecks caused by treacherous, shifting shoals. Then again, with the right captain, you can brave those waters yourself on a fishing charter that can easily reach the Gulf Stream. The choice hotel is the charming Inn on Pamlico Sound ; wake up with its seaside view, and you’ll understand how worthwhile it is to splurge on a sound-front room.

Great Smoky Mountains West Virginia

Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Yes, it’s an eight-hour drive to reach this ridge, but the jaw-dropping scenery will make the effort more than worthwhile—and we’re not just talking about the sight of a statue of Dolly Parton as you reach the end, erected in her honor in the legend’s hometown of Sevierville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the NPS network (and free to enter, too). It spreads across 500,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains, straddling two states; the easiest entry point from D.C. is the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg. Once you’re in the park, start walking: There are 800 miles of trails in total, including a portion of the official Appalachian Trail. You can also enjoy a guided tour on horseback operated from several stables dotted around the reserve; just make sure to call ahead and book . The peak times for visiting include leaf-peeping season, of course, plus early summer, when the flame azaleas are in bloom. This is a year-round park, though, with plenty to enjoy even in winter, when the views from high perches like Clingman’s Dome are particularly impressive. In season, you can camp at one of ten different grounds (reserve a spot here ) or book a room at one of the hotels in Gatlinburg, which effectively serves as a resort community adjacent to the park.

Lake and wetlands with greenery and shrubbery and a small river leading to a small pond against a larger body of water...

Cassadaga, Florida

The hub of Volusia County, just east of Orlando and around four hours from Miami , is Cassadaga—a town whose residents will likely know you’re coming. Homes here are occupied by psychics and folks who generally believe in life after death, reincarnation, and the power of the spirits. Come to the Spiritualist Camp and check out the list of mediums and healers taking bookings that day, working on everything from past life regression to aura photography. One standout is Louis Gates , who grew up here as the child of two psychics; ask him about his childhood, as he has intriguing stories about life in Cassadaga, as well as a sixth sense ($50 for a half-hour session). There’s also a hotel in town .

Combine a look into your future with a glimpse at Orlando’s past: The Downtown Orlando Historic District is full of grand old mansions that offer a glimpse of how things used to be. This self-guided walking tour will let you explore all the best landmarked properties at your own leisurely pace.

Florida St. Petersburg Salvador Dali Museum

Dali Museum in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Florida

Is there anywhere that captures the essence of Florida more completely than St. Pete? It’s relaxed, rimmed by gorgeous beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, and resolutely determined to let any visitors shuck off their worries within minutes of arriving. If you haven’t decompressed over the four-hour drive, make for Paradise Grille immediately, where you’ll find dinner, ice-cold drinks, and acoustic music. Spend the rest of the day at Honeymoon Island or Caldesi Island State Parks, two of the area’s best waterfront spots. There’s another side to the city, too: The Dalí Museum , a longtime anchor of the culture scene, was recently joined by the Imagine Museum, which showcases the studio glass movement of the 1960s.

Key West Florida

Key West, Florida

The so-called Conch Republic has made its name as a kooky hideaway for America’s eccentrics—it even declared independence from the U.S. for a few days in 1982. It retains that offbeat, end-of-world appeal thanks to enduring sights like BO’s Fish Wagon, a bar on the waterfront that could be mistaken for a junkyard; but the last decade has seen a major upgrade in the accommodations on offer here. Try The Reach , the adult-aimed sister spot to the Waldorf Astoria located next door, which has its own private beach. Walk over to the Bahamian Village, with its ice cream-colored cigar makers’ cottages, and spend a lazy brunch (heck, the whole afternoon) al fresco at Blue Heaven , surrounded by its flock of resident chickens.

Aerial view of Florida Everglades

The Everglades

The Everglades, Florida

It takes barely an hour to hit the entrance of Everglades National Park from Miami, an almost 4 million-acre swampy prairie filled with rare crocodiles and dozens of remarkable birds. Skip the most popular route along the Tamiami Trail, and instead duck in just past Homestead at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance , which is the best way to reach Flamingo , the only settlement actually inside the park. From there, it’s a windy, 40-minute drive south to the tip of the Everglades. There are trails en route—Nine Mile Pond is a canoeing trail even newbies can manage—before you hit the 19th-century settlement, named after the pink birds that flock here (likely not actually flamingos, but  roseate spoonbills, though that’s not quite as snappy a placename).

Take boat tours of the backcountry from the marina in Flamingo, or book a houseboat to get some sleep and keep exploring the next morning. Just remember to wear long pants and pack industrial-strength bug spray in abundance—the mosquitoes can be a menace here, year-round.

From Dallas

The water in Buffalo Springs at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma is full of green plant life

Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma

Chickasaw Country, Oklahoma

Drive just two and a half hours and cross state lines to explore one of the most noteworthy Native American areas in the U.S. It was here, in South Central Oklahoma, that the Chickasaw Tribe relocated after being forcibly driven from their ancestral lands near the Lower Mississippi in the 1830s. In the almost 200 years since, they’ve established a new homeland in Chickasaw Country, including an impressive center to learn about their culture, where there are artifacts, stomp dance performances, and a historically accurate recreation of a village from the 1700s.

Stay at the Chickasaw-operated Artesian Hotel , with views out across the countryside, and be sure to pack your hiking boots. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area is Oklahoma’s oldest national park area, with plenty of activities for travelers: It has plenty of short and easy trails like Bison Pasture and Veterans Lake, as well as superb fishing in the manmade Lake of the Arbuckles, with catfish, perch, and bass in abundance.

Fredericksburg Texas Downtown

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg and wine country, Texas

Fredericksburg is the best base for exploring Texas wine country , just over a four-hour drive from Dallas . A 14,000-square-mile stretch with more than 30 wineries, it’s the second largest wine region in America after Napa. Bending Branch, south of town, is known for its vintages of Tannat, a grape that thrives in the hot, dry climate. Don’t miss the chance to stroll around the charming, historic downtown founded in the 1840s by a Prussian baron—stay at the Hoffmann Haus , a German-inflected B&B, to feel the history.

Round Top Cafe in Texas. Image shot 2005

Round Top, Texas

If whimsy were a place, it would be this offbeat town three hours south of Dallas . It becomes an antiquing hub each spring, luring 200,000 or more shoppers to browse the bric-a-brac, but there’s also superb shopping year-round at stores like the 1920s-era farmhouse Townsend Provisions . Hotel Rancho Pillow is the mascot for Round Top, a riot of bohemian color where owner Sheila Youngblood rents an eclectic assortment of accommodations on her 20-acre homestead. Ask about the sheet-rocked teepee, and try riding the mechanical bull if you dare.

Palo Duro Canyon. Texas

Palo Duro, Texas

This, the second largest canyon in America after the Grand Canyon , is a suitably epic Panhandle destination about a six-hour drive from Dallas. It’s worth every minute on the road once you’re standing by the 120-mile gash in the earth that plunges almost 1,000 feet. Come to hike, bike, and ride horses; there are almost 90 miles of trails in the state park, with the most popular runs located along the floor of the canyon. Offset the exertion by hunkering down at one of the chic cabins at Dove’s Rest , with a superb view out across the canyon proper. Each cabin has a propane grill and fire pit so you can BBQ each night under the stars.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your partner, a fun trip with friends, or a memorable escape with the kids for a long weekend, these road trips from Houston have a lot to offer–and several of them aren’t even in Texas.

How We Structured This Houston Weekend Getaways Guide

We’ve intentionally structured this guide to the best weekend getaways from Houston to cover destinations between roughly 3 and 8 hours from the city (emphasis on roughly, of course–Houston area traffic doesn’t always cooperate).

While there are dozens of destinations closer to Houston that could certainly justify a fantastic short road trip (hello Brenham , Conroe , Galveston , and College Station !), we’ve already covered those in our Houston day trips guide , so chose not to include them here.

However, for incredible weekend trips close to Houston, be sure to peruse that post as well.

Small Town Weekend Getaways from Houston

While there are dozens of delightful small towns located within a couple of hours of Houston, go a bit further afield, and you’ll find even more–including some of the most cherished towns of the Texas Hill Country.

Fredericksburg

Known for its German heritage and location in the heart of Texas wine country, Fredericksburg is not only one of the best weekend getaways from Houston, it’s one of the most beloved weekend destinations in the state!

If you love events, consider heading to town for Oktoberfest or the town’s many Christmas events, but no matter when you choose to visit, you’ll find tons to do.

Be sure to go for a wine tasting or two, try your hand at antiquing downtown, hike Enchanted Rock , eat at least a few plates worth of delicious German food, and stay in one of the town’s charming bed and breakfasts during your stay!

Side trips to Luckenbach and Old Tunnel State Park also make delightful additions to a weekend in Fredericksburg.

Driving Distance from Houston

Another beloved gem of the Hill Country, Wimberley is known for its artsy downtown packed with galleries and unique boutiques, its natural beauty, and–most of all–its swimming holes.

Two of Wimberley’s swimming holes ( Jacob’s Well and the Blue Hole ) rank among the most sought-after places to swim in Texas, and you’ll need to plan weeks in advance to score reservations to jump in during the summer!

While in Wimberley, be sure to also browse the downtown shops, climb Old Baldy (aka Prayer Mountain), enjoy a wine tasting, and keep an eye out for the many whimsically painted boot statues around town.

Jefferson (+ Caddo Lake)

The small town of Jefferson, Texas, combined with nearby Caddo Lake State Park, makes one of the best and most diverse Houston getaway ideas (for the lovebirds out there, it’s arguably one of the most romantic getaways from Houston, too).

The best things to do in Jefferson itself include antiquing in the historic downtown center, shopping at the famous Jefferson General Store, staying in one of the many bed and breakfasts that the town is famous for, and learning about Jefferson’s railroad history–touring Jay Gould’s opulent private rail car is a great place to start.

From there, head to Caddo Lake, where you’ll find a very different side of the Lone Star State–one dotted with giant cypress trees that drip Spanish moss and leisurely canoe rides.

This isn’t a lake for swimming–the alligators who live in the lake are best avoided–but it is utterly beautiful, and a fantastic road trip from Houston for those looking to leave city vibes behind entirely.

Nature-Focused Road Trips from Houston

Featuring several state parks and even a national park, these short weekend trips from Houston are perfect for those looking to enjoy the great outdoors.

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Fun fact: while both of Texas’ official national parks are further than an 8-hour drive from Houston, there is a US national park accessible on a weekend trip for Houston–it’s in Arkansas!

Aptly named Hot Springs National Park is the perfect Houston getaway destination for those looking for a relaxing weekend complete with a soak in a natural thermal spa.

Located in an urban setting surrounded by shops, restaurants, and more, Hot Springs offers a fantastic mix of natural highlights and small-town charm.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Known for having the most magical fall foliage in Texas, Lost Maples State Natural Area is one of those remarkable places that makes you appreciate the sheer diversity of beauty that you can find in the Lone Star State.

While the fall foliage season is, hands down, the best time to visit (it generally runs from late October through mid-November), Lost Maples is a year-round destination known for its hiking, fishing, and beautiful views.

The East Trail, while a bit of a challenge, is a must-do if at all possible to seek out the best views in the park.

Whatever trail you choose, though, you’ll find gorgeous views of the Sabinal River, stunning maple trees, and lovely wildlife throughout the park.

4 hours, 45 minutes.

Garner State Park

Encompassing more than 1700 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country, nearly 3 miles of the stunning Frio River, and roughly 16 miles worth of trails, Garner State Park is absolutely one of the best weekend getaways from Houston!

Whether you’d like to hike, camp, float the river, or simply enjoy a picnic and a swim, Garner State Park’s unforgettable beauty will be on full display.

Broken Bow, Oklahoma

As the gateway to beautiful Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow is one of the best weekend trips from Houston for those looking for a quiet retreat into nature near a small town.

Here, you can go canoeing on the lake, take a hike, stay in a cozy cabin, and enjoy a relaxing trip that feels worlds away from the city.

If your goal is to find peace and quiet among the trees and rivers, you can’t beat the beauty of Broken Bow.

Best Cities for Weekend Trips from Houston, TX

Every city has an energy all its own. If you want a change of pace from Houston without sacrificing the convenience and excitement of city life, here’s where to go!

If you get lucky with traffic, you  may  be able to drive from Houston to Austin in just under 3 hours, but since Austin is difficult at best to pull off as a day trip from Houston, it deserves to be featured as one of the best Houston weekend trips!

As the official capital of Texas and the self-appointed Live Music Capital of the World, Austin is positively bursting with fun things to do and see.

During your weekend in Austin, stroll down South Congress, see a show, decide for yourself where you can find the best breakfast tacos in Austin (biased hint: they’re at Veracruz All Natural, though Juan in a Million is a close second), snap the iconic photos with the Greetings from Austin mural and I Love You So Much mural, watch the sunset from Mount Bonnell , and try your hand at kayaking or SUPing on Lady Bird Lake.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Featuring some of the best food, music, and culture in all of the country, having a city as incredible as NOLA reachable as a road trip from Houston is definitely something to take advantage of!

While you’re there, be sure to enjoy Bourbon Street, but get off of it, as well: NOLA is more than just its incredible partying (though the partying does indeed live up to the legends).

Consider visiting the Garden District, taking a ghost tour, visiting the nearby bayou, taking a steamboat cruise, and of course, eating plenty of excellent food, from po’ boys to beignets, during the course of your weekend in NOLA .

5 hours, 10 minutes.

Bourbon Street in NOLA as seen from above at night. New Orleans is one of the best road trips from Dallas!

Often lumped in with its next-door neighbor of Dallas, Fort Worth is a distinct city all its own.

On short road trips from Houston, you probably won’t have time to see both cities–so that’s all the more reason to plan more than one weekend escape to North Texas!

During a weekend in Fort Worth, be sure to watch a cattle drive at the Stockyards, pay a visit to famous Sundance Square, watch US currency being printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (yes, really–it’s even free to visit!), and check out the beautiful Fort Worth Water Gardens.

Want to get a bit of a thrill during your trip?

San Antonio

As the most-touristed city in Texas, San Antonio knows how to show visitors a good time, and it is absolutely one of the best weekend getaways from Houston.

Be sure to visit the famous Alamo, as well as the rest of the San Antonio Missions. All five missions, including the Alamo, are recognized together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site–the only UNESCO site that exists in Texas!

You’ll also want to sample the Riverwalk, of course, as well as visit the San Fernando Cathedral, stroll through the King William Historic District, go shopping at the Historic Market Square and in La Villita, and visit one of San Antonio’s incredible museums.

During December in San Antonio , holiday events and 100,000 Christmas lights along the Riverwalk transform the city into one of the best places to celebrate Christmas in Texas–and the fact that the weather finally cools off then doesn’t hurt, either.

If you’ve heard of one thing about Tyler, it’s probably about its flowers: not only is the stunning Tyler Rose Garden one of the most magnificent rose gardens in the country, but Tyler’s Azalea Trails also draw plenty of visitors each spring.

Add in beautiful historic homes to tour, a handful of local distilleries, a cool planetarium, and one of the top barbecue joints in Texas (Stanley’s BBQ), and you have the makings of an incredibly fun Houston weekend getaway.

Be sure to also stop by Tyler State Park to hike or fish, and to browse this small city’s charming downtown while you’re there.

3 hours, 30 minutes.

Known for big hair, big (oil) money, and big buildings, Dallas is a quintessentially Texan city that has a distinctly different vibe from Houston.

It also happens to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the USA, with an excellent food scene and a plethora of things to do–and while the Houston vs Dallas rivalry may run deep, even the most loyal Houstonites will enjoy spending a long weekend in Dallas.

Of course, no weekend trip to Dallas would be complete without a somber exploration of the assassination of President Kennedy, whose murder in Dallas in 1963 is one of the most haunting in the USA’s collective memory.

On a lighter note, though, Dallas offers far more than morbid history: with phenomenal shopping, excellent skyline views at Reunion Tower, walkable neighborhoods like the Bishop Arts District, and great gardens and museums (the Dallas Arboretum is stunning), you’ll find plenty of fun things to do during a weekend getaway from Houston in Dallas.

With enough time, you can even stop in small towns like Huntsville, Centerville , and Corsicana on your way to Dallas!

3 hours, 45 minutes.

Long known as the home of Baylor University, Waco has become one of the most popular road trips from Houston in recent years for a very different reason: the opening of Magnolia Market, owned by Chip & Joanna Gaines of HGTV fame.

Even beyond the incredibly popular Silos District , though, Waco has plenty to see.

Consider also stopping by the Dr. Pepper Museum, enjoying Baylor’s beautiful campus, or checking out the Wooly Mammoth National Monument during your visit.

Fun Beach Road Trips from Houston

Galveston may be the most accessible beach for a weekend trip from Houston, but it’s far from the only one!

Unlike the rest of Texas’ major cities, Houston is even within reach of beach towns beyond Texas that you can enjoy on a short road trip from Houston!

Pensacola Beach, Florida

The legendary beaches of Florida–the ones on the very western edge of the panhandle, anyway–just barely squeeze into our criteria for these weekend trips from Houston.

While you’re there, be sure to check out Fort Barrancas, the Pensacola Lighthouse, and the National Naval Aviation Museum. Most importantly, though, make sure to spend plenty of time on the absolutely stunning beach!

If you’re visiting over a long weekend, you might even want to squeeze in a day trip to nearby Destin.

pensacola beach florida as seen from the water, one of the best weekend getaways from houston tx

South Padre Island

As the only tropical island in Texas, South Padre Island definitely ranks among the best weekend trips from Houston.

Here, you’ll find 34 miles of sandy beaches with calm, beautiful water, dolphins to watch, recovering sea turtles to visit, the opportunity to take a horseback ride on the beach, and some stupendous sunrises.

South Padre Island is one of the most popular beaches in Texas for good reason, and though it is known for its raucous Spring Break parties during March, outside of those weeks, the island is a far more laid-back escape.

5 hours, 45 minutes.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Want to enjoy some of the best gulf beaches in the south, but don’t want to drive  quite  as far as Pensacola Beach?

Consider heading to Gulf Shores, Alabama, where you’ll not only find stunning beaches at incredibly affordable prices but excellent seafood, a wildlife refuge, and a couple of state parks to visit.

  • Don’t Let Rain Dampen Your Camping Plans: Hipcamp Now Offers a Weather Guarantee for Camping Trips

Gloomy camp setting with rain clouds in the background

Photo by Viresh Thakur on Unsplash

Continuing to make your camping trips memorable despite Mother Nature’s plans

We know all too well the wave of panic when you hear the pitter patter of rain drops on your tent or how disappointing it can be when rain washes out your much-anticipated camping plans. That’s why we’re excited to announce that Hipcamp now offers a Weather Guarantee.

Now, if it rains on your trip, we’ll automatically reimburse you for your trip cost. It’s peace of mind for a small fee and no claims or paperwork are required.

Curious about how we come up with new features here at Hipcamp? We caught up with Hipcamp’s product manager, Mike Kolarik, to learn more about why the team’s so excited about bringing this feature to campers.

How often does rain affect camping trips?

While campers cancel trips for a variety of reasons, the most common by far is the weather. According to our data, weather is the reason behind 20 to 40% of cancellations! And, who knows how many people decided not to book because they were worried about weather spoiling their trip?

How did this feature come to life?

We worked with the great folks over at Sensible Weather, a group of climate scientists, technologists and designers dedicated to understanding climate risks. Combining their expertise with our own understanding of campers’ needs, we were able to develop a product to help more people get outside with peace of mind.

How does this feature help Hipcampers?

The Weather Guarantee is an optional purchase during online booking that proactively reimburses up to 100% of the total trip cost if rain is forecast during their stay. Reimbursements are made automatically, with no claims required. And, what’s more is that campers can still enjoy their trip! They’re still reimbursed even if they decide to brave the elements.

How does this feature help Hipcamp Hosts?

Whenever a camper adds a Weather Guarantee to their booking, whether they know it or not, they’re protecting their Host as well! That’s because when campers cancel bookings due to whether any refunds they receive come directly out of Hosts’ earnings. With the Weather Guarantee, not only does the camper get reimbursed completely, but the Host also keeps all of their earnings.

Anything else you want to share?

Yes! We’re excited about the potential to bring the feature to more countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia, as well as covering other weather events, such as extreme heat and air quality.

Any other new features you can tease?

Stay tuned for more weather-related features that will bring real-time weather forecasts and historical weather to our campers to help them make the best decisions. We’ll also roll out more options for trip protection unrelated to the weather.

That’s all from Mike! Ready to book your next Hipcamp with a Weather Guarantee? Learn more about this new feature below.

Book your next camping trip

How does the Weather Guarantee work?

When you book a qualifying Hipcamp stay, you’ll have the option to add the Weather Guarantee to your booking for a nominal fee. If there’s forecasted rain during your stay, you’ll automatically get money back. The fees and reimbursement amount vary depending on your booking and the terms will be laid out for you to review before purchasing.

Here’s an example of what that looks like:

What types of weather does the Weather Guarantee cover?

The Weather Guarantee covers precipitation determined by the official daily NOAA forecast for each day of your camping trip. Don’t worry, Sensible checks in to let you know if your stay qualifies for reimbursement.

How much reimbursement do I receive with a Weather Guarantee?

Weather Guarantee payout amounts vary and are defined at the time of booking your Weather Guarantee. You’re eligible to receive a daily payout equal to the average daily cost of the qualifying reservation, meaning you might receive multiple payouts throughout your trip that equal your entire trip cost.

Can I still go on my Hipcamp booking if I get a reimbursement?

Yes, the Weather Guarantee doesn’t result in any cancellation of your trip, and you only get reimbursed for forecasted rain if you keep your Hipcamp reservation. That means you can continue with your camping plans, even if you get a reimbursement.

What’s the difference between a Weather Guarantee and insurance?

Weather Guarantees aren’t insurance products. Traditional travel insurance policies cover catastrophic events that cause cancellation of your trip. While insurance products typically cover cancellations leading up to a trip (such as sickness or injury), Sensible guarantees specific weather during the dates of your trip, protecting you in the event that the forecast doesn’t align with the guaranteed conditions.

For more info on how the Weather Guarantee works, visit our support page for more information .

This Lamp Turns My Bedroom Into a James Turrell Installation

Portrait of Jordan McMahon

When I started testing alarm clocks earlier this year, I had high hopes that either the Loftie or Hatch Restore 2 — both newer, feature-packed smart clocks that frequently make appearances on TikTok — could provide my room with some gentle but much-needed lighting. While both did a great job simulating that early-morning glow that can ease you into your day, neither provide the right kind of light to help me find my phone charger while keeping my room dim or to read a book before bed. But then Loftie sent me the Loftie Lamp. It can be paired with the company’s alarm clock or used on its own, and besides automatically turning on and gently increasing in intensity to wake you up, it can be set to turn on when it’s time to start your nighttime routine. But most important for me, it works just as well as a stand-alone light as it does for keeping me in a circadian rhythm. Plus I love having my room already lit before I head in to brush my teeth.

Without any lights turned on, the lamp looks like most others with a shade but on the more minimalist, high-design side. The white polycarbonate base is particularly nice looking, almost like frosted glass, and the decorative metal mesh shade provides an accent color (you can get it in white, black, silver, peach, and a limited-edition pistachio). The magic happens when the lights — which illuminate the entire cylindrical base — turn on, which you can do via a button on the back or with the automated routines you set up through the phone app.

Unlike most bedside lamps, which use a single bulb at the top to emit light, the Loftie’s entire base is translucent, allowing light to emit from the entire thing. The app has two color wheels you can use to set either solid colors or custom gradients. One wheel is a standard rainbow spectrum, allowing you to choose nearly any color you’d like. Even vibrant colors like hot pink end up looking like pastels thanks to the translucent base, and they all made my bedroom feel like a scene from a Wes Anderson film or a James Turrell installation. The other wheel goes from blue to orange, sort of like the light you’d find on a Kindle or another e-reader with a built-in light, if you’re looking to produce a cooler or warmer tone in your room. The lamp looks good in each color and gradient setting, and the light it casts is pleasant and can completely transform the room.

At its brightest, it’s enough to be my sole source of light in the evenings. At its dimmest, the light glows just enough for me to make it to the bathroom without bumping into things or tripping but wouldn’t wake someone else up, and there are plenty of settings in between. Loftie has 33 presets, including solid colors and gradients that evoke the feeling of sitting on a beach or watching a sunset.

I could get a cheaper automated light for my nightstand with a traditional bedside lamp and a smart LED bulb , but even with adjustable brightness, there’s something about the translucent shell of the Loftie that softens the harshness of the LEDs. And a regular lamp with its lone bulb can’t produce as much light as the Loftie Lamp can.

Wayne’s world: how a dim sum treat can beat a trip to the beach.

trips close to me

The operative word is “family” because for me, that’s what it was.

The reunion was between myself, my brother Steve, and Jim, a person I’ve known for nearly my entire life, as well as his wife Gloria.

Wayne Chan

Jim, or “Jimmy” as he will always be known to me, grew up on the same street as we did in the San Diego suburbs. Jimmy was the youngest in his family, with some older brothers. Being the youngest in his family, Jimmy didn’t spend a lot of time with his older brothers, who had interests of their own.

We met Jimmy when we moved into our home. I was about 12 years old and about three years older than my brother Steve and Jimmy. Jimmy was a skinny, blond-haired kid, but full of life and loved to laugh. Soon enough, we all became fast friends, hanging out with each other after school, and on weekends.

We played football in our front yard, or basketball in his backyard. We’d play “Marco Polo” in their pool. We’d watch TV together and get in trouble together. In our front yard we had an olive tree, and we’d climb the tree and pretend it was our secret fort and we were superheroes. I always wanted to be Batman.

We were inseparable.

My parents saw how close we were and unofficially adopted Jimmy as the “third Chan son”. On Sundays, when we would go out to lunch, Jimmy was usually with us, because he knew he was always invited.

One of our favorite restaurants was a dim sum restaurant, and Jimmy scarfed up all the various dim sum snacks like a pro. His favorite delicacy was the barbeque pork buns, a steamed bun with a sweet and savory pork mixture inside.

Years go by, and it’s time for me to go to college. Life changes and time moves on. After a few years, Jimmy moves to Arizona and starts a new life. We try and stay in touch, but for the past 25 years, we see each other sparingly, and usually only for milestones, like a wedding or my mother’s memorial.

This last week, my brother Steve texted me and told me that Jimmy was coming back into town and wanted to see if we could have lunch together. I said I was available, and we started going back and forth about where we should go.

Steve suggested that we find a place by the beach, since there aren’t that many beaches in Arizona.  After a minute, I suggested that instead of the beach, maybe Jimmy would appreciate us going to a dim sum place where he could try one of the barbeque pork buns again.

A recent photo of my longtime friend Jimmy Haverly. (Wayne Chan)

We decided to let Jimmy decide.

He chose the pork buns.

It’s amazing that even after 30 years, while we might not all be aware of the specifics in our lives, after catching up, the same connection is there, even after all this time.

We reminisced about days gone by, and laughed at some of the same things we laughed about all those years ago. And we did it over a plate of steaming hot barbeque pork buns. At the end, Jimmy took a moment to thank us for including a scrawny little kid to be part of our family, and we told him how much we appreciated him being our 2 nd brother.

The one thing we missed was to take a picture of our reunion. I guess that just gives us another reason to get back together soon…and share another plate of pork buns.

I was surprised and immensely pleased by the response to my previous column about turning 90. We are, for the most part, a society that aspires to personal growth and social engagement. And we are the better for it. Yet, at a birthday party for 65 friends and family, I spoke of my underlying sadness about the state of affairs in our country. How can we tolerate conditions that leave a large part of the population struggling to partake in our country’s bounty and another huge segment so at odds with each other that they cannot come together to help […]

Scorching temperatures, humidity making life miserable for millions from Midwest to Maine

Even before noon on Wednesday, the heat index in Maine soared to 100 degrees in Portland and Waterville with 103 in Sanford and Fryeburg, according to News Center Maine meteorologist Jason Nappi.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A blistering heat wave Wednesday extended from the Midwest to New England, leaving millions of people sweltering through the Juneteenth holiday, including in places like northern Maine where they rarely experience such conditions this early in the year.

The city of Caribou, Maine, just 10 miles from the Canadian border, saw a record 103 degrees on the heat index, which combines heat and humidity. The region was under a heat advisory until Wednesday evening. Several residents said they were used to temperatures in the 70s and 80s in June and rarely this humid.

“I’ve seen this maybe one time before where it’s been this hot in June,” said Hannah Embelton, 22, a server at an ice cream store in Caribou, adding that customers were staying away from the soft serve options because they melt too quickly.

Heat wave trips up power plants, prompting New England grid operator to issue warning

Even before noon on Wednesday, the heat index in Maine soared to 100 degrees in Portland and Waterville with 103 in Sanford and Fryeburg, according to News Center Maine meteorologist Jason Nappi. Thursday is forecast to be just as hot.

We usually never get the brunt of all this heat and humidity because we are so north. Just how hot it is, that is all everyone is talking about,” she added.

Over at Moose River Campground, about 13 miles from the border, owner Lisa Hall was fixing a cabin faucet amid the sizzling temperatures and said such conditions are more common in mid July or early August. Advertisement

“I am sweating like crazy and it’s way too hot,” she said.

The dangerous temperatures were expected to peak in the eastern Great Lakes and New England on Wednesday and Thursday, and in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic on Friday and Saturday, the National Weather Service said. Heat index readings were expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees in many locations.

“We are seeing a ridge of upper level high pressure, which is bringing all this heat from the southern United States,” said Kyle Pederson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boston.

“That is just causing lots of hot temperature in the mid- to upper 90s and the heat index to reach over 100. It’s just going to make it feel warmer than it is outside,” he said. “You will really feel that humidity and feel the heat quicker.”

The conditions were expected to scale back some Juneteenth activities and limit options for relief. Cities that opened cooling centers this week advised that Wednesday’s Juneteenth holiday meant some public libraries, senior centers and pools where residents could beat the heat would be closed.

Officials have urged people to limit outdoor activities when possible and to check in with family members and neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat. Advertisement

In New York, state parks have free admission Wednesday and Thursday, and select state-run pools and beaches opened early for swimming, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

New York City beaches were open but public swimming pools there were closed until next week. The city has a list of hundreds of air conditioned sites that are free and open to the public. Public libraries, which have been used as cooling centers during other heat waves, were closed Wednesday because of the Juneteenth federal holiday.

Anne-Laure Bonhomme, a 43-year-old health coach, was visiting sites in New York with her family. “The humidity is pretty insane,” she said.

People and even zoo animals were forced to find ways to thwart the muggy weather.

An organization that provides produce to areas with limited access to fresh food in Columbus, Ohio, prepared frozen towels and packed cold water for their workers.

“Hydration is the key,” said Monique McCoy, market manager for the Local Matters Veggie Van. Advertisement

High humidity lingered over Indianapolis Wednesday making the deceptively cloudy day warm and unenjoyable. Parks and walking trails were sparsely populated despite the holiday.

The Bennett family considered taking their 7-year-old and 4-month old to the pool or a splash pad on their day off of work, but decided it would still be too warm for the kids. Instead, Kayla and Sarah drove from Muncie to the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis to visit the indoor exhibits in the air conditioning.

A recent study found that climate change is making heat waves move more slowly and affect more people for a longer time. Last year, the U.S. saw the greatest number of heat waves – abnormally hot weather lasting more than two days – since 1936.

Chicago broke a 1957 temperature record Monday with a high of 97 degrees. A cold front was expected to bring relief to areas near Lake Michigan on Thursday and Friday, the National Weather Service in Chicago said.

In California, wildfires erupted east of San Francisco in the state’s historic Gold Country region and in the mountains of northern Los Angeles County after what had been a quiet start to fire season. Wildfires in southern New Mexico damaged 500 buildings Tuesday in a mountain village of 7,000 people that had been evacuated with little time to spare.

Meanwhile, a fresh batch of tropical moisture was bringing an increasing threat of heavy rain and flash flooding to the central Gulf Coast. Hurricane season this year is forecast to be among the most active in recent memory.

Anthony Izaguirre in Albany, New York, and Isabella Volmert in Indianapolis contributed to this story.
