After a prolonged period of being stuck at home, some families are looking to travel again. And while the COVID-19 pandemic means that precautions still have to be taken, and not every destination is up and running at 100% capacity, there's still plenty of unique experiences out there that are once again open to the public.

The following factory tours and appropriate for kids, are well-reviewed by families and are currently open to visitors (or will be opening soon). But you might want to book ahead — some require timed tickets or reservations before you visit. But when you're done, you'll all know a little bit more about how the world around you is made.

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory (Louisville, Kentucky)

Swing by to see how baseball bats are made — this company has been churning them out since 1884. Your family can walk through the factory production line and watch the wood chips fly! Everyone can try out bats from iconic players, like Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter. With plenty of photo ops (including your crew inside a giant baseball mitt) and a free mini bat souvenir for every guest, this tour will be a home run. Open daily; $ 18 for adults, $11 for ages 6 – 12, free for ages 5 and under

Jelly Belly Visitor Center & Factory (Fairfield, California)

From your perch above the production line, you’ll witness all the steps — slurry, steam bath, glossy application — it takes to create the gourmet jellybeans that have been a thing since the late 1800s. Video screens provide close-ups and fun facts (like it takes 1 – 2 weeks to make a jellybean). Feeling hungry? Stop at the café for a jellybean-shaped pizza. Open daily (but factory workers are typically there only on weekdays), $5 for adults, $2 for ages 2 and up, free for younger kids

The Kazoo Factory Tour Experience (Beaufort, South Carolina)

Polaris Experience Center (Roseau, Minnesota)

School-age kids who love to build things will have their mind blown going behind-the-scenes at this maker of snowmobiles and ATVs. Kohler Design Center Factory Tour (Kohler, Wisconsin)

Got a teen whose interested in manufacturing? They’ll be fascinated by this detailed two-hour, 3 ½-mile foray behind the scenes of how the brand’s famous plumbing products are created. Open Monday – Friday, children under 14 not permitted, free

Sweet Pete’s Candy Shop (Jacksonville, Florida)

Willy Wonka vibes are strong at this mansion that takes guests from room to room of candy-making demos. You’ll get to design your own chocolate bar, choosing from more than 16 toppings. Check availability online; $6.45 per person

Henry Ford Rouge Factory Tour (Dearborn, Michigan)

One truck per minute rolls off the assembly line at this famous automotive factory — and your crew gets a birds-eye view of the goings-on from a 1/3-mile observation deck. Since you can’t tour an actual Coke bottling plant, this attraction is the next best thing. Its Bottle Works exhibit, showcasing real equipment, explains the packaging process. Tillamook Creamery Tour (Tillamook, Oregon)

From a viewing gallery above the factory floor, you’ll see how milk becomes cheese. Then hit the dining hall for gooey faves, likes grilled cheese and mac ’n cheese. Your fam can even share a “flight” of ice cream. Open daily; tour is free, you can add tasting experiences for a charge

Warner Bros. Studio Tour (Los Angeles, California)

Your crew will be star-struck hanging out at a working movie studio. During the hour-long guided portion, you’ll see backlots, movie sets and maybe even spy someone famous. Then you’ll have two more hours to explore on your own — plenty of time to snap a pic of your family in front of the fountain from Friends . Open daily: $69 for adults, $59 for ages 5 – 10

The Great Utz Chip Trip Tour (Hanover, Pennsylvania)

Kids will discover how potatoes get turned into chips at this famous maker’s plant near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. They can watch factory workers from an observation gallery; closed-circuit TV monitors provide close-ups. Everyone receives a free sample of chips at the end. Open Monday – Thursday, free

Ben & Jerry’s Factory Experience (Waterbury, Vermont)

With a tentative re-opening planned for the end of June 2022, this beloved attraction wets appetites with a short movie about how Ben & Jerry got their start. From there, it’s off to the mezzanine where you’ll watch how the ice cream is made. Samples of ice cream (sometimes a flavor that’s exclusive to the factory) is the proverbial cherry on top. On your way out, visit the “ice cream graveyard” of flavors that are no longer made. Check back for ticket info

The Crayola Experience (Easton, Pennsylvania)

There are many activities to take part in at The Crayola experience, including a live show where a "crayonologist" demonstrates how crayons are made. The 65,000-square-foot attraction also includes a toddler and a big-kid playground, interactive games and a studio for art projects, among manny other stations — they recommend blocking out three or four hours for a visit. Open daily. Admission is $25 if you buy tickets in advance; a timed ticket is required for all visitors ages 3 and up. There are also Crayola Experience locations in Chandler, Arizona; Mall of America, Minnesota; Orlando, Florida and Plano, Texas, but offerings may vary

Taza Chocolate Factory Tour (Somerville, Massachusetts)

Specializing in stone-ground chocolate, this candy maker explains the production process and hosts a sampling. On weekends, there’s a scavenger hunt-themed tour for kids under age 10 . Open Wednesday – Sunday; $8-$12 per person

The White House (Washington, DC)

Though not a factory in the traditional sense, White House tours are back, and you can meander around the famous Blue Room, Red Room, State dining room and — best of all — the Rose Garden. But you can’t wait until the last minute to book. Twenty-one to 90 days before you’d like to visit, you need to request one of the free tours by contacting your congress member’s office. The perfect length of time to spend in the USA actually depends on you. If you’re looking for a quick trip, maybe three or four days will do it. However, to explore everything in detail, you might need a week or two.

National Air and Space Museum

Take your kids to the National Air and Space Museum; they’ll love all the exhibits there. You can find it at Sixth Street and Independence Avenue SW. The best part is that you can enter the museum for free, which is a plus when you’re traveling with kids.

The museum has more than 21 galleries that cover everything from aviation history to space exploration. There are also interactive exhibits where kids can learn about flying by playing with tools that have been used by real pilots in the past.

You’ll also find special events at this museum, especially on holidays. An event like Santa’s arrival on Christmas is the most famous one.

American Museum of Natural History

This museum was created in 1874 and is one of the best city landmarks in New York. It’s one of the most visited museums in the world, and it’s no wonder why, since there are more than 34 million artifacts on display here, including dinosaur bones, meteorites, and fossils.

The museum also has a planetarium with shows about outer space every day at noon and 3 pm If you’re looking for something to do with kids that’s educational but not too stuffy or boring, this is a great option for the best family vacations!

Yellowstone National Park

Despite being an active volcano and one of the world’s largest underground volcanoes, this park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the USA. It is known for its geothermal features and wildlife, but there are plenty of other things to do with kids here that don’t involve hiking or camping.

There are plenty of museums and exhibits at Yellowstone National Park that can be enjoyed by kids. The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center has exhibits about how geysers work and how they were discovered by pioneers. The Yellowstone Association Research Library has several books that kids can read while they’re waiting for their parents to finish looking at exhibits.

If you’re looking for something more active, there are many trails across Yellowstone National Park where you can hike or bike with your children. Many of these trails are also wheelchair accessible.

Grand Canyon National Park

A fun fact about the Grand Canyon is that it can be seen from space and is also a popular spot among tourists for pictures and picnics. You can hike down into it or take a helicopter ride over it; either way, it will give you an amazing view.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try going rafting down one of its tributaries, like the Colorado River or Little Colorado River. You’ll see tons of wildlife, including bighorn sheep, deer, and squirrels, along with Native American rock art dating back thousands of years!

Disney World

Disney World is a must for any family vacation. The park offers countless activities and attractions, from rides to shows to character meet-and-greets.

Disney World has tons of different parks, including Animal Kingdom, Epcot Center, Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. You can stay at one park or visit all four! Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow

Near: New York City

The Hudson Valley is one of the most scenic areas in all of New York, and it’s an easy day trip from Manhattan. Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are two of the best day trips from New York City that you can take on your next family vacation.

Tarrytown is a historic village with several attractions, including the Tarrytown House Museum, the Lyndhurst Estate and Gardens, and the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site.

Washington has a very famous legend of Ichabod Crane, who was the headless horseman, and this sleepy hollow is the home of that person. The area also has many scenic drives and trails for hiking or biking.

Near: Boston

Concord is the birthplace of the United States. The Minute Man National Historic Park in this town was made to remember the first shots fired during the American Revolution.

Visitors can tour the house where Paul Revere lived, as well as see his famous statue that stands on Monument Square in front of City Hall. The trip is full of history, but Concord also offers plenty of fun activities for kids and adults alike.

There are several museums in town, including the Harriet Beecher Stowe House (the author’s home), which has been restored to look exactly like it did when she lived there in the 1800s.

You can also visit Walden Pond State Reservation, where Henry David Thoreau wrote his famous book “Walden.” Or you can take a short drive out to Walden Pond State Reservation for great hiking trails through woods full of wildlife like deer and foxes!

Starved Rock State Park

Near: Chicago

If you’re looking for a day trip that the whole family will love, look no further than Starved Rock State Park. This park has everything you could want – hiking trails, waterfalls, beautiful views of the river, and a gorge below. You can also enjoy a boat tour there.

It also has plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife (including bald eagles!). The kids will love climbing around on the rocks and exploring caves while you explore the area’s history.

Starved Rock is located in Utica, Illinois , about two hours from Chicago, so it’s a great destination if you’re planning on visiting Chicago or another city in Illinois. It’s also close enough that you could easily drive down for a weekend getaway if you wanted!

Wilmington, Delaware

Near: Philadelphia

If you’re looking for a day trip that will keep the whole family entertained, Wilmington is your best bet. The city has plenty of attractions to keep everyone entertained.

The first stop on your tour should be the Brandywine River Museum of Art. This museum has several exhibits that include works by artists such as Picasso and Monet. There are also interactive exhibits that allow visitors to create their art using different mediums.

After spending some time at the museum, head over to the Nemours Mansion & Gardens, where you can take in stunning views of the Brandywine River while enjoying breathtaking gardens full of flowers and trees. There’s even an outdoor maze for kids who want something extra fun!

Next up is lunch at one of Wilmington’s many restaurants. One option is The Millworks on Market Street, which offers delicious food at reasonable prices. Plus, they have an awesome view.

If you’re not up for driving yourself, or if you just want to see more than just one part of the country during your vacation, there are plenty of ways to get from place to place!

The trains are great because they go everywhere and they’re cheap! You can get on one in New York City and end up in San Francisco without having to deal with any traffic or tolls.

Buses are another great option if you want to save money on transportation while still getting where you need to go quickly and easily. Some buses even have Wi-Fi so you can stay connected while traveling!

Planes are expensive but worth it if your destination isn’t too far from where you started (like Los Angeles).

Renting a Car

Take a road trip ! The best way to see all of America is by car, so if you have time in your schedule, consider renting one and hitting the road. You’ll be able to stop wherever you want and see whatever catches your eye.

If neither of these options sounds appealing, consider hiring a tour guide who will take care of all your transportation needs while showing you around their favorite spots along the way (and saving money on gas!).

If you are looking for a direct flight, many airlines offer this option. You can also take a train, bus, or car if you want something more adventurous, depending on your country.

If you are traveling by plane, several airports in America serve domestic flights as well as international ones. These include JFK International Airport in New York City, LaGuardia Airport in Queens, and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

There are also large airports such as the Dawson Community Airport, which serves domestic flights only, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which serves both domestic and international flights.

If you prefer taking public transportation instead of driving yourself, then consider taking Amtrak or Greyhound buses instead since both companies offer services throughout most states within America, including Alaska and Hawaii too! You can even take Amtrak from Canada to New York.

Staying safe in the USA when visiting with kids is a top priority for families. Every parent wants to protect their children from harm when traveling abroad, but did you know there are some things you can do to curtail your risk of facing problems on vacation? Here are some worth-noting points for you to add to your checklist, and make sure you mark them too!

Family ID Bracelets 

First and foremost, we recommend using family ID bracelets. These silicone bracelets can contain important information about your family members, including their names, allergies, blood type, and even the phone numbers of their parents or guardians.

If someone finds one of your children who has lost their way, they can use this information to find out who they belong to so they can be returned safely. You can buy them online, and they usually come in a pack with different band sizes.

So, whether you’re taking a road trip, visiting an amusement park, or attending a sporting event, using ID bracelets for the whole family can help keep your children safe.

AirTags or Tiles

AirTags are great because they help keep your family safe. Simply attach them to the outside of your child’s backpack and track that backpack’s location at all times. So, if your children wander off or leave their backpacks behind, you’ll know right away rather than having to get worried.

Tiles or AirTags are easy to attach to your child’s clothing as well. They can be engraved with your child’s name and/or phone number, so you don’t lose track of them in a crowded place. Besides, the batteries last almost a year.

Make a Family Safety Code Word

We all know that kids are frequently oblivious to their surroundings. But, in a situation where you need to communicate quickly and discreetly with your children, having a family password can help remedy that problem.

Use something like an alligator or avocado to alert your children to dangerous conditions. For instance, “We are in an alligator situation” is a phrase your children should be familiar with and know how to respond to.

On hearing this word or phrase, your children should know to respond quietly, leave everything they are up to, and follow what you say.

Use this term to let your child know that if they feel something is dangerous or if they see something that worries them, you want them to tell you about it.

When your child notices something that may be dangerous, they can tap you on the shoulder and use the word “alligator” to get your full attention.

Travel Vaccines

Much like you need all the important paperwork, it is also a good idea to make sure your children are up to date on any travel vaccines. The main ones you need are Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever.

You should always carry a certificate proving that you have had the proper vaccines. When you are traveling outside of your home country, it’s a good idea to double-check with your physician or local travel clinic if you need any booster shots.

First Aid Kits

If you’re traveling with kids, it’s important to have a first aid kit on hand. You never know when someone might need a bandage or an antibiotic. Make sure that the kit contains all the essentials: bandages in various sizes, gauze pads, and rolls; antiseptic wipes and ointments; antibiotic ointment packets; a thermometer (to check for fever); antihistamine tablets (for insect bites); and pain reliever tablets (for headaches).

Take a Family Photo

When you’re traveling with your kids, it can be hard to remember everything you need to do. That’s why we recommend taking a photo of your whole family at the start of each day before you leave.

The picture will remind you of what everyone looks like and help you identify them if they get lost. You can also use it as a reference if someone asks if they are missing anyone. Or if a police officer needs to see identification for all members of your family.

All travelers are required to produce: 

• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
• All children aged 5 to 17 years old must provide proof of vaccination (if eligible), proof of recovery or a negative COVID-19 test.

Getting to California is relatively easy as there are a variety of options available including flying, driving, and taking public transport. You can fly into both big airports, such as LAX (Los Angeles), or small airports like Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) depending on which part of California you're traveling in. You can also drive to California if you're from a neighboring state (or want to go on an epic road trip) or you can take a bus or a train with several routes to all the popular destinations.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Costa Rica. You will not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Costa Rica to determine what travel documentation is required.

The company that operates your Day 4 flight requires that your passport information be provided to us prior to your departure. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your tour.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN:  If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Deposit & Final Payment

The deposit and the fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $350 per person

Final Payment:

Final Payment is due to Tauck 90 days before departure for lands trips, and 120 days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
• Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $299  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

90 days or more before departure = $350 per person

89-8 days before departure = $600 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control,  Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Fee Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for your pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS

Space constraints and weight limitations aboard the flight from Tortuguero to Arenal require you to bring no more than 25 lbs (11.3 kg) of luggage. Therefore, we will provide you with a duffel bag (18 x 12 x 11 in, or 46 x 30 x 28 cm) to carry your clothing and personal items for your two-night stay in Tortuguero National Park. Your remaining luggage will be safely stored with the driver on the coach in the town of Cariari.

If you reside in the continental U.S., the duffel bag will be sent to your home and should arrive approximately two weeks prior to your departure for Costa Rica.

If you reside outside of the continental U.S. or in Hawaii or Alaska, you will receive your duffel bag upon arrival in San José because customs regulations prohibit the easy delivery of your duffel in advance.

Children will also receive a Tauck Bridges backpack in addition to the duffel!

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide water on the motor coaches.

Costa Rica is a smoke free country. No hotels, restaurants or bars have smoke areas.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS  

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Costa Rica family adventure is a very active tour. Our activities include visiting national parks, biological reserves, rainforests and villages. You should be in good health and able to climb into and out of small boats, river rafts, and planes, and also be able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain.

The Real InterContinental Hotel & Club Tower Costa Rica in San Jose has an elevator. Aninga Lodge comprises 32 comfortable jungle rooms stretched along a wooden boardwalk and El Mangroove Hotel suites are situated within two to three-story buildings.

Some roads to beaches and other rural locations are not paved and some out-of-the-way destinations are accessible only by these roads. Roads into, in, and out of the mountains are unpaved and bumpy.

The itinerary includes several early morning starts and leaves little scheduled free time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

What To Pack

Your adventure in Costa Rica is casual. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Comfortable, cotton clothing is suggested. High temperatures and humidity in most areas make lightweight clothing practical. Long pants and long sleeves are suggested for sun and mosquito protection. Evenings in all hotels and lodges are casual with no specific dress code. Casual resort wear is appropriate for dinner on the last night of the tour.

Most importantly, bring comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in. It is important that your shoes have good ankle support as the walking trails can be wet and muddy.

The Real InterContinental Hotel & Club Tower Costa Rica, Tabacón Resort and Spa  and El Mangroove provide valet laundry services; the Aninga Lodge does not.

If you book a summer departure and wish to view the nesting turtles in Tortuguero National Park, you will need to adhere to certain clothing rules and guidelines. Please be sure to bring a black or navy blue long-sleeved, lightweight shirt and pair of pants, and closed-toe shoes. The carrying or use of cameras and video recorders – even those equipped with infrared lights - is strictly prohibited when viewing the turtles. The guides will not allow your participation in the walk if you do not abide by these rules, as light-colored clothing and camera equipment frightens the turtles and disrupts their approach to the nesting sites. Restrictions are necessary to conserve and protect the turtles' beach nesting sites and assure their annual return.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We recommend you pack the following items for travel to Costa Rica:

• Comfortable, cotton clothing
• Shorts and long pants
• Short and long sleeve shirts
• A light sweater or jacket for the evenings
• Lightweight waterproof slicker
• IMPORTANT: Dark clothing for the viewing of the turtles at Tortuguero NP (July - August only)
• Comfortable walking shoes with adequate ankle support
• Shoes that can get wet for rafting, not flip flops
• Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
• Insect repellent
• Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
• Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
• Collapsible umbrella
• Small backpack for long walks
• Pre-moistened towelettes
• Adequate personal toiletries and sundries
• Reusable zippered plastic bags or other waterproof bags to keep important items dry during rainy excursions
• Travel journal
• Tauck Bridges backpack and duffel
• Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Each child 17 and under will be sent a complimentary backpack from Tauck Bridges! Costa Rica's tranquil environment offers stable, tropical weather where the temperature remains fairly constant throughout the year. Average high temperatures range from 75 to 80ºF (24 to 27 ºC) in the Central Valley and 85 to 88ºF (29 to 31ºC) in the Northern Subdivide and the Caribbean regions. Rain is common throughout the year, with more frequent rain occurring in the "wet season" which is typically from May through October.

Central Valley (San José): From November to April the total average rainfall is 10.7 in (272 mm). During the rainy season the total average rainfall is 60.1 in (1,527 mm). April and November are considered to be transition months. In July, there is a diminishing of the rainfall due to the "veranillo de San Juan", a few weeks of hot dry weather that breaks up the rainy season.

• Northern Subdivide and the Caribbean (Tortuguero): These regions do not have a true 'dry season' since the rainfall here is approximately 138 in (3,515 mm) per year. Regardless of when you visit, plan on encountering some rain.

Pennsylvania GOP Senate candidate Dave McCormick unveils ‘pro-family’ agenda — including an IVF tax credit

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. — GOP Senate candidate Dave McCormick spoke with a toned, policy-focused agenda Wednesday as he revealed his plans to “Strengthen Pennsylvania Families” if elected — even proposing a tax credit for in vitro fertilization as Democrats campaign claiming Republicans would ban it.

“America cannot be strong if our families are weak,” the Gulf War vet told the audience at his Delaware County luncheon. “And if our families are in decline, America will decline.”

McCormick’s stop in “DelCo” came as the fourth leg of his “Building America’s Future” tour, an ambitious trek across the Keystone State to iron out policy proposals. McCormick’s three previous events focused on China, energy policy and “shaking up” Washington.

McCormick repeatedly cited inflation as a major issue contributing to the struggles American families face. Costs for pregnancy and postpartum care, as well as a family’s annual spending on each child, have all risen to five-figure levels and caused birth rates to decline under President Biden and incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey — who McCormick noted has voted with Biden’s position 98% of the time.

Of the specific policies McCormick floated, two stuck out.

First, the former Bridgewater Associates CEO discussed his record of supporting in vitro fertilization for his employees before proposing a $15,000 federal tax credit for families using IVF to have children. The credit would be fully refundable and available for up to two tax years per family.

“As a company, we helped pay for fertility services like IVF, which are often not covered by insurance and can be prohibitively expensive,” McCormick said of his time as Bridgewater’s CEO. “As your senator, I will oppose any effort to restrict IVF. But I’ll go even further than that: Every family should get a $15,000 tax credit for fertility expenses like IVF.”

Second, McCormick called for banning social-media use for those under age 16, arguing the correlation of its use to depression and other mental-health issues among children constitutes a “tipping point” and demands action.

“We need to come together in a bipartisan way to address this crisis and protect children by properly treating kids under 16 as minors needing protection from the harmful effects of social media,” he said.

On other issues, McCormick expressed support for giving families more tax incentives — such as creating tax-free flexible spending accounts for families paying up to $10,000 for child-care costs and encouraging scholarship contributions.

“Eligibility for the FSA would begin in the middle of pregnancy and be available to any family with earnings to fund it — and not be tied to a particular employer,” McCormick said.

He also touted school-choice vouchers as a means of upward mobility for poor children and their families.

“Pennsylvania deserves a senator who supports school choice,” McCormick said, attacking Casey for his support of the teachers unions that kept kids out of school during the pandemic. “Because choosing where your child goes to school should not be a privilege only reserved for wealthy and well-connected parents.”

Tour Guide David is very knowledged, provide lots of information. Also food on the ship is amazing, we had try almost all the traditional Ecuadorian food. And some of them are tasted even better than some restaurants on the land. The only part need to be improved will be sound issue and room on the ship. My room is in lower deck, which have huge noise when ship is moving or droping/pulling the anchor. And also dont have good view, but can stay at the sundeck to enjoy the sun light.

It was one of most memorable tours we had among all our international travels. We were amazed by the stunning beauty of the Machu Picchu, Humantay Lake, and Rainbow Mountain, and the rich history of Cusco region. We learned so much about Inca people and their history.

Amazing tour over five countries in a short time. The jungle experience in Muyuna Amazon Lodge Peru with the guide Julio was awesome. Overall this tour was very good organized and coordinated from Aborigen Travel Buenos Aires. I was happy to booked all flights through Aborigen Travel. It was helpful to stay in contact via WhatsApp during the whole trip. Bolivians hospitality is unique, i had such a warm welcome from Alexandra and her family. I can highly recommend this tour to somebody who is in a good condition. The timetable is very demanding. The impressions from all this cities, beautiful and different landscapes, friendly and helpful poeple in Southamerica will be deep in my heart for the rest of my life.

How the royal family, London Zoo are welcoming Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’

Taylor Swift started her first of eight “ Eras Tour ” shows in London on Friday night — and the British city is already ready for it.

The official X account for the royal family posted a video of the British Army performing a rendition of Swift’s “Shake It Off” during the June 21 Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace.

“Can’t stop, won’t stop groovin’,” the royal family said in a post on X with the video.

The London Zoo also commemorated Swift’s arrival in the city on Instagram with three throwback photos from when the singer visited the zoo in 2012.

“A different Era at London Zoo,” the London Zoo wrote in the caption. “She visited us in 2012, and now she’s back in London for the biggest tour of all time.”

The zoo added that Swifties with an “Eras Tour” ticket can get 25% off a walk-up day ticket to the zoo June 21-30, before inviting Swift back herself.

“Whenever you’d like to make your next visit @taylorswift & @taylornation, we’re ready for it,” the zoo said.

Swift, 34, previously visited the Sydney Zoo  two days in a row  while she performed her “Eras Tour” in Australia’s largest city. She was spotted one day with  boyfriend Travis Kelce  and talked about visiting with her opening act, Sabrina Carpenter, during an onstage duet.

“We’ve been 100% of our days off,” Swift said while sitting next to Carpenter, based on a video from the concert. “I’m really all about the red panda. I think you guys don’t understand how cool kangaroos are because you have so many. They are so cool, so strong. So bouncy.”

Swift is scheduled to play eight shows at London’s Wembley Stadium, which has a 90,000-person capacity, in June and August. She most recently wrapped up stops across the United Kingdom, including Cardiff, Liverpool and Edinburgh.

During her 100th “Eras Tour” performance in Liverpool, the singer confirmed the tour would end in December.

“This is the very first time I’ve ever acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December,” she said.
