The Ultimate Dead Sea Day Trip from Tel Aviv

Route 90 to Dead Sea

In southern Israel, on the western edge of the Judean desert lies the Dead Sea – a hyper-saline lake which is also the lowest point on Earth. This is, without a doubt, one of the must-visit places during your trip to Israel. While Tel Aviv offers a vibrant nightlife, endless restaurants, and a stunning coastline, the true natural beauty of Israel is found not in the cities, but in its deserts, hills, and nature reserves.

The Dead Sea is perhaps the most remarkable body of water in the world. The high salt concentration makes your body more buoyant and allows you to float effortlessly across the water, and the Dead Sea floor contains mineral-rich mud which provides tremendous benefits for your skin.

Traveling from Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea

Getting to the dead sea from Tel Aviv via public transport is very straightforward. The no.421 bus from the Tel Aviv bus terminal (more commonly known as Arlozorov Terminal) departs twice daily at 9 AM and 12 PM. Reservations can be made using the Egged website , up to 14 days in advance.

In addition, there is also the option of a private shuttle bus, guided dead sea tours, and taxis. For more information and reviews, please see TripAdvisor.

However, if you have the means, traveling from Tel Aviv to the dead sea by car can be an unforgettable experience. This is our recommended method of travel to the dead sea as it offers the most independent journey.

Attractions between Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea

Along the way, you will encounter plenty of natural landmarks, archaeological digs, nature reserves, and historically preserved sites. By car, the journey takes approximately two and a half hours, so we advise that you leave Tel Aviv early in the morning so that you have plenty of time for stop-offs along the way, and still arrive at the dead sea long before sunset.

Here are a few places that you should visit while traveling from Tel Aviv to the dead sea. Please, keep in mind that some attractions can be closed or have limited access on Friday and Saturday, so make sure to check opening hours beforehand.

( Note: This list is based on traveling via Route 90 – through the West Bank, and arriving at Ein Bokek)

Jericho Valley

The first portion of the journey is between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, lasting approximately 45 minutes. Afterward, as you continue South, beyond Jerusalem and past Maale Adumim, you will enter the breathtaking Jericho Valley.

Here, the road winds between golden desert hills, and it’s one of the most scenic views in the entire country. There are several small settlements along the road, each offering places to eat, relax, and enjoy the warm desert climate. These include Mitzpeh Jericho, Kalya, and Almog .

Qumran National Park

Qumran Caves Dead Sea

As you continue South along route 90 towards Ein Bokek (the main tourist beach of the dead sea) you will reach Qumran National Park – home of the Dead Sea Scrolls . This is one of the most prominent archaeological sites in the world, and visitors are given a remarkable insight into the Hellenistic and Herodian eras of ancient Israel.

35 KM south of Qumran is the Ein Gedi reserve –  a desert oasis and one of Israel’s premier hiking spots. The reserve is a natural sanctuary for many animals, and several rare species of hyrax and ibex can be found here.

In addition, the neighboring Kibbutz is home to an internationally acclaimed botanical garden, spread across almost 24 acres and containing over 900 species of plants.

Masada National Park:

Finally, the last stop we recommend before arriving at Ein Bokek is the Masada National Park . Atop a large desert plateau lies the ruins of the ancient Masada fortress, where, according to Josephus, the final battle between the Judean rebels and the Roman Empire occurred. The plateau is also a natural observation point where one can witness the entirety of the Judean desert and the dead sea bank

A few extra tips:

Aside from leaving early and making the most out of your day, here are a few things to consider before you travel from Tel Aviv to the dead sea:

  • Bring water: The climate is hot and humid, and dehydration is a genuine concern. Make sure to pack plenty of water for the journey.
  • Bring flip flops: The beach sand gets scorching hot, especially during summer. Be sure to bring flip-flops so you don’t burn your feet!
  • Don’t go underwater: The dead sea is not the place to practice your diving skills. If the water gets into your eyes they will sting ferociously.
  • Don’t swim with your jewelry. The salt levels will corrode your expensive watches, bracelets, and necklaces – take them off before entering

Qumran Caves

This is the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls, now on display in the Israel Museum, were discovered. Frequently asked questions.

There is no question that the Dead Sea is worth visiting. Haven’t you ever wanted to float on water instead of sinking? Aside from that, it contains minerals with healing properties, mud that leaves your skin feeling smoother than after a day at the spa, and a view of Jordan.

Here at Egged Tours, we provide a large selection of half-day, single day and multiple day guided Dead Sea tours. Major destinations include Jerusalem, Masada tours , the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, Galilee, and the Golan Heights. If you prefer to combine several destinations, we also offer Israel tour packages for your convenience.

April and May are the best months to visit Jerusalem. Spring is the ideal season for Dead Sea tours because the weather is pleasant and fewer tourists come to visit. October through November are also mild months when crowds are thin.

Yes! Masada and the Dead Sea are practically neighbors, making these two locations the perfect combination for a day trip. Explore the ancient fortress of Masada with a qualified and licensed tour guide and relax at the Dead Sea with our Masada and Dead Sea trip , full-day tour.

You can spend as much time as you want at the Dead Sea. Fully relaxing and taking in its miraculous nature is the whole point! It is best to combine your visit to the  Dead Sea with Masada to truly get the most out of your day.

You can relax at the Dead Sea on your own, but it is much easier to explore the area (including Masada), with a tour guide.

Guided Dead Sea tours enhance your trip in so many ways:

  • They know the best routes: There is a lot to see and only so much time. Tour guides will plan the trip in the way that makes the most logical sense. Instead of taking circular routes to see all the sites you want to see (and then being disappointed when you miss something), tour guides make sure you see all the places that matter most to you.

Amman to Dead Sea Guide (2024): Car, Bus, Taxi, Day Tour

Getting from Amman to the Dead Sea is not too complicated, as there are limited options on how to do it. Whether you are planning on going to the Dead Sea from Amman as a day trip or as part of a one-way itinerary through Jordan, it is all highway driving (once you are out of Amman).

Amman to the Dead Sea distance is only about 45 minutes by car, but unfortunately for visitors, there are no reliable and frequent public transit options . But do not worry, I have been to the Dead Sea several times while in Jordan. In my guide to getting to the Dead Sea, you will find options for getting there by car, bus and private transfers. I rent a car , but there are other ways to do it.

Lindsay Guide from Amman to the Dead Sea

How to Get from Amman to the Dead Sea

So I wanted to start with why the Dead Sea is so popular for those who are starting their research. It is one of the top things to do in Jordan. It offers more than ticking off a bucket list and taking a salty dip as a curious tourist. The air has a higher oxygen concentration in this area and its mineral-rich properties bring people from all over the world who are suffering from various types of skin diseases and rheumatism. SOme visit and stay for quite awhile. Most tourists however, come and explore the salty shores, take a dip, enjoy a resort and then move on on their travels.

Amman to the Dead Sea by Rental Car

My suggested method for visiting the Dead Sea from Amman is to rent a car and drive yourself there. A rental car in Jordan is about 25-30JD per day (depending on the car size etc) and once you are out of downtown Amman, it is highway driving from the 7th Circle in Amman to the Dead Sea. There are various checkpoints on the way, and as a visitor, I have never had more than a glance at my Canadian passport (and my kids in the back) and been waved through to continue.  I suggest that if you have time, to spend a night at one of the many Dead Sea Hotels so you can enjoy a dip, then enjoy the amenities of the resort as well before returning to Amman or continuing on your Jordan self-drive itinerary!

But if you only have time for an Amman to Dead Sea day trip, it is only about 45 minutes by car and you can easily visit for a few hours and then drive back to Amman the same day! It is also the perfect way to start or end an entire itinerary in Jordan.

Get more info on renting a car in Jordan.

Amman to Dead Sea Taxi

It is possible to hire a taxi to take you for an Amman to Dead Sea day trip. You can also take a one-way fare, but it would probably be easier to negotiate to hire the driver for the day and then you have a ride back to Amman after you have finished visiting the Dead Sea. They might even be able to stop at a few souvenir shops outside of the hotel strip where you can purchase Dead Sea mud, as well as a lot of other souvenirs from Jordan .

It is very difficult to get a taxi out of the Dead Sea area unless arranged in advance, so I highly suggest you negotiate a round-trip fare if you choose this route. Prices can vary but expect about JD75 for a day rate.

Private Driver

Similar to a taxi, you can hire a driver for the day to take you to the Dead Sea. I have been stopped on the street and offered cards from drivers, but your hotel can help you find something suitable most likely. Similar to taxi’s expect about JD75 for a day rate.

Here is an example of a private driver you can book online .

Amman to Dead Sea Day Trips

If you are not comfortable renting a car to drive to the Dead Sea, this would be the second option I would suggest. You can prebook a day tour from Amman to the Dead Sea and you will probably get more bang for your buck if you do a Madaba, Mount Nebo, Dead Sea tour.

Check out Tour Options:

Madaba, Nebo and Dead Sea Private Tour: This tour gives you entrance to Dead Sea Beach, as well as a visit to Mount Nebo and Madaba in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

Amman and Dead Sea Tour:  This tour offers a driving tour through Amman including a visit to the Amman Citadel and the markets. The tour then makes its way to the Dead Sea. It does not include entrance fees however so expect to pay entrance fees to the Amman Citadel and a private beach at the Dead Sea.

Madaba and Dead Sea Tour: This one includes a visit to Madaba and Saint George’s Church, as well as Mount Nebo, the baptism site and the Dead Sea. It does not include any entrance fees.

Visiting the Dead Sea as a stop on an Organized Tour

I love tours. I am not afraid to say it. All I have to do is choose a destination and let someone figure out all of the logistics for me! If you are like me and like this kind of travel, then a visit to the Dead Sea is likely on your itinerary! You will not have to worry about the logistics of getting there as your tour will likely include a day pass in one of the resorts where you can enjoy the amenities of the resort (like the pools etc) after you have experienced the Dead Sea!

Amman to Dead Sea Bus

It is often hard to remember that Jordan is still an emerging tourism market. While it seems like a no-brainer that there would be busses around the country, moving tourists by bus has not developed much. Recently JETT has made mention of a dailly bus from Amman to the Dead Sea. However, I have not seen recent options to book this online. You can inquire at JETT when you are in Jordan.

There is an Amman to Dead Sea local mini-bus service for those wanting a local option or are on a backpacker budget. While I find this a bit of a hassle, you can take a bus from Mujaharin Station in downtown Amman to Rame and then taxi to wherever you wish to go at the Dead Sea. It is best to know a few words of Arabic if you plan on using local transportation in Jordan as each time I have hopped on one, the driver has not spoken any English! This is your cheapest option for a bus from Amman to the Dead Sea.

Where to Stay at the Dead Sea

Each of these hotels is located on the Dead Sea and has frontage at the beach. Many other hotels offer shuttles to the beach. If you want to be able to walk from your hotel room to float at the Dead Sea, choose one of these hotels! Many also offer day rates to use the pools and the beach. It is impossible to book online but you can call the hotels in advance to ask about the day rate. If you want my suggestion, spend a night at the Dead Sea Spa.  By the time you pay for beach access for the day, you could book a room for the night for just a few extra dollars.

Super shores to see sea shells

Many will want to have a beach day this summer, but you don't have to make the long drive to Myrtle Beach or Florida to get some sand and sunshine. Georgia has multiple fun-filled beaches. Here are some of the best ones, according to U.S. News & World Report :

  • Sea Island is home to the only resort in the world to earn four Forbes Five-Star awards for 15 years in a row. Among the more unique experiences are horseback riding on the beach at sunset and searching for nesting sea turtles at dawn from May through August.
  • Cumberland Island National Seashore is only accessible by passenger ferry or private boat. Once there, you'll find maritime forests, wetlands, and more than 17 miles of untouched beachfront. It's possible you'll see horses running free, nesting sea turtles, and foraging armadillos.
  • Tybee Island is just a brief drive outside Savannah. The North Beach section is home to the island's historic lighthouse, and there are several secluded areas for a less commercial beach day. Boat trips to see dolphins just off shore are also available.
  • St. Simons Island is the biggest barrier island of Georgia's Golden Isles. Collect sand dollars at the pet-friendly East Beach, or take a bike ride at the beach during low tide. You can fish off boardwalk at Gould's Inlet. On the southern tip of the island is a lighthouse and museum.
  • Jekyll Island is a former private retreat turned state park with 10 miles of coastline. Driftwood Beach has weathered trees and branches all over the sand, providing one-of-a-kind photo ops and backgrounds for shows like "The Walking Dead" and movies like "X-Men: First Class."

Hiking trails to try

Looking for a break from the Delaware beaches? These trips can all be done in a day

day trips from the dead sea

The Delaware beaches are always a good time.

But maybe you got a little too much sun and a day in the sand doesn’t sound appealing. Or maybe you’re one of those people who can only sit still for so long, and a few days of lounging around has you antsy.

No matter the reason for your departure, these day trips — all within driving distance of the Delaware beaches —will give you a temporary break from the salt and sand.

Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Consisting of all counties east of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland’s Eastern Shore is full of small, cobblestone-filled towns that are perfect for a day visit.

First on the list is Cambridge , which dates back to 1684, making it one of the oldest colonial cities in Maryland . Originally a seaport community, it celebrates its rich maritime history with the Richardson Maritime Museum and Ruark Boatworks, part of the museum.

Visitors can watch as volunteers restore and build traditional wooden boats or hop across the creek for a ride on Skipjack Nathan of Dorchester, an oyster dredge boat.

For history nerds, there’s a museum honoring Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman, who was born near Cambridge.

5 Maryland Day Trips: Quick summer getaways close to Delaware

About an hour north of Cambridge is the charming Rock Hall , a waterfront town located directly on the Chesapeake Bay. Known as the Pearl of the Chesapeake, you’ll find some of the freshest seafood around along its numerous waterfront restaurants, such as the funky Harbor Shack.

Other popular towns include St. Michaels , Easton and Oxford .

Elsewhere along the Chesapeake Bay

Located at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of Chesapeake Bay, Havre De Grace is a must-see.

Another waterfront village, you'll be sure to find some top-notch seafood. Not a seafood lover? The village has many other options, too!

This wouldn’t be a proper list without mentioning Annapolis , Maryland’s capital city.

Known as the sailing capital of the U.S., visitors can explore the area by foot or by boat.

Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, and visitors can take a stroll around the beautiful grounds. Or, take a tour of the Maryland State House.

Main Street is also bustling, with numerous eateries, shops and galleries.

Chincoteague, Virginia

This island — and town by the same name — is located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Its national wildlife refuge is known for wild ponies, which reside on Assateague Island. Two herds call the island home, one of which is located in Maryland and the other in Virginia. The Maryland herd is managed by the National Park Service, while the Virginia herd is owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

Each year, there’s an annual pony swim where “Saltwater Cowboys" on horseback round up the ponies and swim them from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.

This year’s 99th annual swim will be on Wednesday, July 24, though festivities kick off in late June with the Chincoteague Fireman's Carnival. The town’s annual pony auction will be held July 25.

For a complete guide to the events, visit chincoteaguechamber.com/pony-event-schedule .

Aside from the ponies, the town boasts numerous waterfront eateries, farmers markets, a blueberry festival , a water park, minigolf and many other outdoor activities.

Cape May, New Jersey

If you’re already at the Delaware beaches but you’ve never been to Cape May, New Jersey, this is the perfect time to check it out.

A ferry will take visitors between the town and Lewes. The ride is about 85 minutes. Reservations are required year round and can be made at cmlf.com .

Cape May-Lewes Ferry guide: What to know about pricing, schedules, amenities and terminals

The town is known for its beaches, but has plenty more to do.

Its downtown area is bustling with shops and restaurants, as well as eye-catching Victorian homes .

A little further out is Willow Creek Winery and Farm , which offers tours, tastings and fire pit Fridays and Saturdays, often accompanied by live music.

And don’t forget to check out the Cape May Lighthouse , located in Cape May Point, where visitors can climb the 199-step cast iron spiral staircase to a remarkable view of the Delaware Bay.

Mt Etna and Stromboli volcanoes erupt over Italy

Clouds of smoke rise from a volcano set over the sea.

The Mt Etna and Stromboli volcanoes erupted on Friday, sending hot ash and lava into the skies of Sicily.

The eruptions forced a temporary shutdown at Catania Airport and prompted Italy's civil protection agency to issue a red alert for Stromboli.

What's next?

Representatives for the airport say operations are expected to resume at 3pm local time.

Italy's Mt Etna and Stromboli volcanoes erupted on Friday, spewing hot ash and lava into the skies of Sicily.

Etna, located near Catania on the Italian island's eastern coast, is one of the world's most active volcanoes and has seen intense activity in recent days.

The smaller Stromboli volcano, located on Sicily's northern coast, spilled lava into the sea.

A red burst of lava erupts from a crater.

The volcanic ash fall forced a temporary shutdown of Catania Airport on Friday, while Italy's civil protection agency issued a red alert for Stromboli.

Warning the situation could deteriorate, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said Stromboli was "under surveillance" and authorities were making sure evacuation plans were ready in case of emergency.

The fire brigade said they had pre-emptively doubled the number of firefighters on the island.

Following the eruption, Catania residents and authorities moved to clean up streets and cars which had been left smothered in black volcanic ash.

Representatives for the airport said in a statement that operations were expected to resume at 3pm local time.

Seattle sits on the slip of land between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with the Olympic and Cascade Mountains serving as a dramatic backdrop for this oh-so cosmopolitan city. Soar up the futuristic Space Needle and experience the views atop this stunning landmark created for the 1962 World's Fair.

Sitka is a charming island community surrounded with stunning mountain and seaside panoramic views. The vast and rich wildlife boasts sightings of whales, brown bears, deers, sea otters, and various birds flock here. This destination offers superb fishing, and plentiful historical attractions.

/sites/default/files/MI.NB-Juneau-lighthouse.jpg

Juneau has been called “ Alaska's peak experience,” certainly due in part to its unparalleled glacier viewing from such places as Tracy Arm Fjord, the Juneau Icefields and Glacier Bay National Park. Kayak up one of the area's many protected waterways, go flightseeing, tour historic downtown or try your hand at panning for gold. The majestic Mendenhall Glacier lies nearly 12 miles outside Juneau, a treck worthwhile.

/sites/default/files/881x400-dawes-glacier-alaska.jpg

This is why visitors come to Alaska-to see glaciers as magnificent as Dawes-and getting there is half the excitement. From Stephens Passage, your ship will turn into the glacially carved fjord of Endicott Arm, the southern sister fjord to Tracy. However, Endicott is special. It's the fjord less travelled, and at its head, Dawes Glacier. But first, the 31-mile fjord. Sheer granite walls. Plunging waterfalls. Spruce and hemlock trees clinging to the steep sides. It is the definition of pristine. Look for "bergy bits," floating chunks of glacial ice, some looking more like sculptures, some with resting seals on top. Keep an eye open for bears, mountain goats and whales, too. As we approach the glacier, listen for thunderous cracks and have your camera ready. Dawes is an active tidewater glacier that recedes daily causing calving, where huge hunks of ice plunge into the sea. At 600 feet tall and a half-mile wide, this blue-hued, powerful glacier may be the highlight of your Alaska cruise.

Venture “where the north wind doesn’t blow.” Known for this famous saying, Icy Strait Point is the ideal landing spot for adventurers seeking a new experience. Breathtaking and exciting, Icy Strait Point truly takes you where the wild things are. It’s one of the few places in the world where wildlife outnumbers the human population. A trip here certainly satisfies your taste for adventure. Take a cruise from Icy Strait Point and enjoy Alaska's awe-inspiring scenery and the many excursion options that Norwegian Cruise Line has to offer.

Thanks to its abundant rainfall, Ketchikan is surrounded by some of the world's most lush wilderness. Its Tlingit Indian name, Kach Khanna, means "spread wings of the eagle." Chances are you'll see one of these magnificent birds perched atop a Sitka tree during your Alaska cruise to Ketchikan (Ward Cove).

How dangerous are Fourth of July fireworks? Here's a look at the numbers.

day trips from the dead sea

As Independence Day rolls around, bookended by days of bangs and pops from professional and store-bought fireworks, it's worth a reminder to play it safe before lighting off that fuse.

We're in the middle of the Consumer Product Safety Commission's annual window for studying the safety and injury impact of fireworks. The numbers, while down slightly, still signal a need for safety reminders.

“While it is a great American tradition to enjoy fireworks around the 4th of July, it is important to remember that all fireworks, even sparklers, pose dangers to consumers," Alex Hoehn-Saric, chairman of the CPSC, said in the agency's annual statement on fireworks safety . "The safest way to view fireworks is to watch professional displays.”

Fireworks present dangers of physical injury, particularly to the hands and face, and environmental concerns in drier areas of the country.

Last year, fireworks accounted for an estimated 9,700 injuries resulting in hospital emergency room visits.

How many people were injured or killed by fireworks in 2023?

Roughly 9,700 people were injured by fireworks in the U.S. in 2023, according to the report. This represents a third straight year of declines in injury numbers after a record 15,600 injuries in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the eight deaths that occurred in 2023 – all male victims ranging in ages 15 to 51 – five deaths were determined to have resulted from misuse of fireworks.

What body parts are commonly injured by fireworks?

In the 2023 study period, which ran from June 16 to July 16, hand and finger injuries made up more than a third of the 6,400 fireworks injuries that resulted in emergency room visits. Injuries above the neck – eyes, ears, face and head – accounted for a combined 41% of those injuries.

Of all the injuries in the study period, 42% of them were burn-related.

Fireworks sales, 1998 to 2023

According to figures from the American Pyrotechnics Association, spending on consumer-grade fireworks dipped slightly last year, while spending on professional display fireworks continued growth from the 2020 low caused by the pandemic when public gatherings were limited.

Russia sent a fighter jet to escort a Norwegian patrol plane away from Russian airspace over the Barents Sea, the Russian defence ministry says.

There was no violation of the air border by the Norwegian patrol plane, the ministry said.

Russia has reported similar incidents before when its planes have confronted military aircraft from NATO countries.

Interfax reported this morning that Russian jet fighters also conducted drills over the sea and the Kola Peninsula.

It is unclear exactly when each of these incidents occurred.

NATO allies will announce at its summit today a minimum baseline of €40bn (£33.8bn) in funding for Ukraine within the next year, the White House says.

A senior civilian NATO representative will be stationed in Kyiv as part of its bridge to membership, it added.

Meanwhile, Norway has said it will donate six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, daily newspaper Verdens Gang reported, citing the Norwegian prime minister at the summit.

Leaders from NATO's 32 member states are meeting in Washington until tomorrow to mark the 75th anniversary of the alliance, with support for Ukraine at the top of the agenda.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been invited to attend and discuss further support.

By Nicole Johnston , Asia correspondent in Beijing

NATO will appear focused on the Russia-Ukraine war this week, but there is another potential theatre of conflict in its sight - the Indo-Pacific.

NATO leaders understand that stability in the Indo-Pacific is essential to security in Europe and beyond: A war here would ripple across the world.

For that reason, representatives from Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand (called the IP4) are also at the NATO summit.

Secretary-general of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg wrote in Foreign Affairs this week that NATO had entered an era of "enduring competition with China".

The Indo-Pacific is being carved up by alliances and partnerships.

There is the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal between Australia, the UK and the US to counter China's military expansion.

The "Quad" is a security forum between India, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

This year the US held military training exercises with Japan and South Korea.

China's Communist Party feels hemmed in by these blocs. These alliances are taking shape in a region China regards as its own backyard. US influence here is not welcome.

The naval ships of Western countries are sailing through the East China Sea and South China Sea, off the coast of Taiwan and across the Pacific. China claims most of the South China Sea as its own.

The Chinese military is operating on the sea and in the skies close to forces from the US and Australia. There have been close calls. The risk of miscalculation is high.

China is alarmed by the strengthening ties between the IP4 and NATO.

On Monday, Lin Jian, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, accused NATO of "breaching its boundary, expanding its mandate, reaching beyond its defence zone and stoking confrontation".

China's argument has overtones of the rhetoric used by Russia in its justification for launching a war on Ukraine.

Russia blamed NATO's eastward expansion. China compares US alliances in this region as being akin to a "NATO" in Asia.

China is also entangled in the Russia-Ukraine war. Officially it is neutral and calls for peace. But its ongoing trade with Russia allows President Vladimir Putin to continue the war.

The Chinese military has started 11 days of joint drills with Belarus close to the Polish and Ukrainian border, only a fortnight after the Polish president, Andrzej Duda, was in Beijing.

The big question here is what happens in Taiwan. Japan has said the "Ukraine of today may be East Asia of tomorrow".

China is adamant Taiwan will unite with the mainland eventually.

What's unclear is how the myriad of US-led alliances in the Indo-Pacific would respond.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has demanded the immediate release of a British national being held in "deplorable" conditions in Russia.

He branded the sentencing of opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison "absurd".

Mr Kara-Murza, 42, was convicted of treason last year over public remarks critical of the Kremlin.

News broke last week that he was being transferred to a prison hospital and his lawyers had been unable to visit him there since Thursday.

"I am extremely concerned that Vladimir's lawyers are being denied access to him in prison hospital, and that the Russian authorities continue to refuse him consular assistance from the British Embassy," said Mr Lammy.

"Vladimir is being held in deplorable conditions in prison for having the courage to tell the truth about the war in Ukraine.

"His absurd 25-year sentence shows the Kremlin's deep fear that more Russians will know the reality of Putin's illegal war – and is further evidence of the targeted repression of the opposition."

Mr Kara-Murza has rejected the charges against him and likened the proceedings to the show trials under Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

A man has been killed and seven people wounded in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian region of Belgorod, according to its governor.

Vyacheslav Gladkov said three apartment buildings were damaged in Shebekino as well as five commercial facilities and 20 cars.

Three civilians were killed and several others wounded on Monday, he said, when Ukrainian shells hit a village in the region called Nikolskoye.

Earlier today, the Kremlin said Russia's military was still working to create a "buffer zone" in Ukraine's Kharkiv region but this would take time.

Vladimir Putin said in May that Russia was creating such a zone in order to protect its border regions from Ukrainian attacks - while continuing to launch rockets and missiles into Ukraine.

A Ukrainian cyclist who competed in international competitions has been killed while serving in Ukraine's armed forces, authorities have said.

Andriy Kutsenko was killed in battle with Russian forces on 3 July, the local administration of Ukraine's western Lviv region confirmed.

Mr Kutsenko spent a decade in the national track cycling team and later moved to Italy.

When Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, he returned as a volunteer fighter, the administration said. He reportedly died during a combat mission.

Surgeons have recalled scenes of chaos after a missile hit Okhmatdyt children's hospital during one of Russia's heaviest attacks on Kyiv for months.

Oleh Holubchenko, a paediatric surgeon, was preparing to operate on a five-month-old patient on Monday morning when air raid sirens started ringing out.

A missile then struck the hospital in daylight, levelling one of its wings, killing at least two adults and injuring 50 others.

Mr Holubchenko said it took him 15 minutes to realise he was covered in shrapnel wounds as he was focused on evacuating patients.

"I immediately got up and asked if everyone was okay," he said.

"After that, with the anaesthesiologist, we manually ventilated the lungs because the machine was completely punctured and the tubing was disconnected."

Meanwhile, maxillofacial surgeon Ihor Kolodka said he was "hit in the face" with glass shrapnel, which injured "most" people around him.

He said he quickly joined in the emergency operation to look for people under the rubble of the hospital's collapsed toxicology building.

"No one thought about anything else; everyone just wanted to do something useful, to save people," Mr Kolodka said.

Donald Trump being re-elected to the White House would result in a Putin-Trump summit where Ukraine is "told what is going to happen", a military and security analyst has said.

Professor Michael Clarke said it's clear that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is "worried" about what the outcome of the ballot in November will mean for his country.

In Washington yesterday, the Ukrainian president said "everyone is waiting for November", including Vladimir Putin.

"It is time to step out of the shadows, to make strong decisions... to act and not to wait for November or any other month," Mr Zelenskyy said.

Prof Clarke said the US and the Biden administration "will want to bake in to the American approach" as much as possible before US voters head to the polls.

He said NATO would "take a deep breath" if Mr Biden won again in November - but cautioned that a Trump win could lead to a change in "the whole demeanour of the war in Ukraine".

"If Trump wins in November it won't be a cliff edge, because he won't become president until January 2025 and it will take some time for his policies to work their way through. But undoubtedly, NATO will start to anticipate some changes," he said.

Prof Clarke added: "Clearly Zelenskyy is worried about that - and why wouldn't he be worried?

"If Trump becomes becomes president, then almost certainly there'll be a Putin-Trump summit which will try to impose some sort of negotiated settlement on Ukraine."

Any meeting between the pair could result in Ukraine being "told what is going to happen", Prof Clarke said, adding: "That's the danger that Zelenskyy sees."

The Kremlin has responded after Sir Keir Starmer signalled that Ukraine can use UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to strike military targets inside Russia (see previous post).

Asked for his thoughts on the UK prime minister's comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "if it's true" then "this is another irresponsible step towards increasing tension and escalating the situation".

Signalling that Russia would respond if the UK permitted the use of its missiles in Russian territory, Mr Peskov said: "We will carefully record everything and take measures."

Sir Keir Starmer has said it's up to Ukraine to decide how it uses UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles, in an indication that its forces would be allowed to strike targets inside Russia.

The prime minister said aid supplied by Britain was "for defensive purposes" but Kyiv can "decide how to deploy it for those defensive purposes".

Bloomberg reported a little more detail of Sir Keir's answer to the question, which came as he spoke to journalists en route to the NATO summit in Washington.

The outlet quoted the Labour leader as saying the long-range cruise missiles should "obviously to be used in accordance with international humanitarian law as you would expect".

Former foreign secretary Lord Cameron, who was part of the previous Conservative government, made similar comments about Ukraine's use of Storm Shadow missiles earlier this year.

At the time, Russia branded it a "very dangerous statement".
