Stunning Costa Brava day trips from Barcelona
Tossa de mar.
Tossa de Mar is a beautiful coastal town and one of Costa Brava’s villages closest to Barcelona. It offers panoramic views across the Mediterranean Sea and is famous for its sandy beaches, lighthouse and, of course, historic fortified medieval village, the only example of a fortified medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast!
You can travel to Tossa de Mar on your own or join a trip from Barcelona that includes transportation, food, and activities.
There are several guided trips we recommend in Tossa de Mar depending on what you like to do:
- Kayaking and snorkelling trip : This is an excellent option if you want to combine some exercise with a visit to Tossa de Mar Old Town. This trip lasts 12 hours and includes kayaking, snorkelling, eating in a traditional restaurant, and exploring the beautiful medieval town.
- Sightseeing and hiking trip : Join a local guide and explore Tossa de Mar and its surroundings in this 9-hour trip . It’s a great way to learn about the city’s history and hike to the nearby coves (level easy). The trip includes transportation and guiding, and you can either bring your lunch or book a local restaurant.
If you’d prefer to go on your own, you can get to Tossa de Mar by bus from Barcelona . The journey takes 1 h 15 min, and there are many buses daily.
And what can you do once there? Check our Tossa de Mar guide for everything you can do, from hiking and scuba diving to chilling at the nearby coves or wandering around the medieval street. In the guide, you’ll also find restaurant recommendations where you can try authentic local foods from the area, like fideuĂ , arrĂČs negre , or tapas.
Cycling trip through medieval villages
Besides crystal-clear coves and fisherman towns, Costa Brava is also home to many charming and well-preserved medieval villages . Up for discovering them on two wheels?
Take the bus from Barcelona EstaciĂł del Nord to Palafrugell , which takes 2 h 15 min. Once in Palafrugell, head to BikeOn (a 20-minute walk), a bike rental service with super friendly staff and great bikes (gravel, road, and e-bikes).
They have designed several routes to explore the area, and we recommend this cycling route that will allow you to discover Pals , Gualta , and Peratallada , three of the most beautiful medieval villages in the area.
If you find yourself more comfortable with a guide than a self-guided tour, BikeOn also offers a guiding service.
If you opt for this trip, we wouldn’t recommend doing it in July and August, as the temperatures are scorching during the day and the villages are most crowded. May, June, September, and October are excellent months for this cycling adventure .
DalĂ-themed trip
As you might know, the famous surrealist artist Salvador DalĂ was born and lived for a long time in Costa Brava. The region’s landscape inspired him and can be observed in his paintings.
If you want to know more about this eccentric surrealist painter, you can’t miss the DalĂ Theatre Museum in Figueres and his house in Port Lligat .
The first is one of the world’s best museums dedicated to the artist. The inside is full of works from DalĂ, but the building is also a piece of art! It’s a quirky pink castle-like building with giant eggs on the rooftop, known as the world’s largest surrealistic object .
The second is a house in the little village of Portlligat, north of CadaquĂ©s, where DalĂ lived from 1930 to 1982 . During that time, he turned what used to be a fisherman’s hut into a surrealist house! There is a pink-lips sofa in the garden, egg sculptures on the rooftop, quirky sculptures in the interior… You get the idea!
To take this day trip, you have two options: join a guided tour or do it on your own . The first option is more comfortable and relaxed because you don’t need to worry about transportation or tickets. And, of course, going by van is much faster than by bus.
However, if you prefer the second one, you’ll have to take the train from Barcelona to Figueres (approx. 2 h journey), spend the morning in the museum, and later take the bus to CadaquĂ©s (1 h 15 min journey and only 4 buses a day!). DalĂ’s house in Portlligat is 15 minutes (walking) from the centre of CadaquĂ©s. To get back to Barcelona, you can take a bus from CadaquĂ©s (approx. 3 h).
Adrenaline trip to Sant Feliu de GuĂxols
If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush and excellent panoramic views of the Costa Brava , you’re in for a treat!
In Sant Feliu de GuĂxols, you’ll find the only via ferrata on Europe’s coast . The route is 480 meters long and can go as high as 20 metres , offering impressive views of the Mediterranean Sea.
This activity is 100% suitable for beginners. However, we highly recommend going with a guide if you’ve never done a via ferrata before or feel more secure with an instructor. For more info on this via ferrata, check our “ Via ferrata Cala del MolĂ guide “.
To get to Sant Feliu de GuĂxols, you can take a bus from EstaciĂł del Nord in Barcelona , and you’ll be there in 1 h 30 min. The buses run approximately every two hours.
â ïž Important!
We recommend climbing the via ferrata early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the high temperatures during midday.
To complete your day trip, you can get lunch at one of the many delicious restaurants in the city centre . Great ones are El PĂcaro (tapas), 220 sushi (Japanese food), and Taverna La Cava (Catalan food).
You can also grab some takeaway food at OrgĂ nic (healthy food like poke bowls, quiche, and smoothies) and eat it at the main beach.
If you’re up for a challenging hike, you can walk to Tossa de Mar following the CamĂ de Ronda  (it takes around 6 hours!) and then take the bus back to Barcelona.
Multi-adventure trip
Can’t decide if you want to hike, snorkel, kayak, or cliff jump? Why not do everything?!
We bring you an activity-packed day trip to explore Costa Brava in an adventurous way.
The trip includes sea kayaking  in Sant Pol de s’AgarĂł’s crystalline waters, picnicking in a hidden cove , snorkelling , and cliff jumping . You then have free time to explore the city, enjoy a drink, or hike the beautiful coastal path known as CamĂ de Ronda.
This trip lasts 10 hours, and you don’t need to worry about equipment, transportation or photos; it’s all included.
We joined this trip in July 2024 and had a wonderful time. Our guide, Tim, taught us many things about our country and marine life that we didn’t know, and he also showed us some pretty incredible spots (like a hidden cave in the sea and a secret cove). All in all, it was a really complete and wonderful day (it felt like we were on holiday in another country!đ).

Girona and Costa Brava trip
Costa Brava’s capital, Girona, is a gorgeous city with an incredible historical centre and a vibrant atmosphere. It was also one of the popular Game of Thrones filming locations!
But the best is yet to come. Girona is strategically located between the sea and the mountains and is close to many Costa Brava villages. So, if you only have one day to escape Barcelona and venture to Costa Brava, you can mix a trip to Girona with a coastal town and experience both.
The easiest way to do so is to join a guided tour. We recommend this small-group 9-hour tour with a local guide and transportation to and from Barcelona. In the morning, you’ll spend time in the coastal area of Costa Brava, moving then to Girona to discover the city.
If you’d rather discover Girona and Costa Brava on your own , you have many options. Many buses link Barcelona with several coastal towns, so you can spend the morning exploring the beaches and coastal paths. After lunch, you can take a bus to Girona and discover the city in the afternoon/evening. Check our Girona guide for our favourite things to do there.
To get back to Barcelona, hop on the high-speed train from Girona station , and you’ll reach the capital in less than 1 hour! It will be an intense date, but 100% worth it!
Foraging and kayaking trip
Are you curious about edible plants and algae? Do you want to discover the Costa Brava in a unique way? Then, hop on a bus from EstaciĂł del Nord to PalamĂłs and sign up for a Marine tapas in kayak adventure.
This guided tour involves kayaking along the coast of PalamĂłs , snorkelling , and hiking the CamĂ de Ronda with an expert botanist . During the experience, he explains which algae and plants are suitable for foraging and how they can be eaten and cooked.
Actually, you won’t be doing this activity with any botanist; you’ll do it with the gastro botanist of the Celler de Can Roca , a famous 3-star Michelin restaurant in Catalonia!
For more info on this activity and to learn about our experience, check our “ Herbocaiac, a foraging and kayaking adventure in the Costa Brava ” guide.
After paddling and swimming, we’re sure you’ll be pretty hungry! Nice options for lunch are Kaos PalamĂłs (innovative tapas and rice dishes), Txoko Donostiarra (tapas) and Nonna Paquita Ristorante (pizzeria).
Is Costa Brava worth visiting?
Absolutely yes ! It’s a wonderful area with charming villages, hidden emerald coves, and plenty of adventure opportunities. Also, the food is delicious there, and it’s sunny all year round!
Although we recommend spending more than one day in Costa Brava to fully live the Mediterranean life, we understand that not all travellers have the time. Therefore, day trips to the Costa Brava from Barcelona are an excellent option for getting a taste of this coastal region.
Costa Brava travel tips
The primary language spoken in Costa Brava is Catalan . However, all locals speak Spanish, and due to its popularity as a tourist destination, many people also speak English.
Costa Brava enjoys sun all year round . Temperatures are pleasant in spring, autumn, and winter, whereas it gets pretty hot in summer. We’re talking 30-38 ÂșC.
đ Best time to visit
It depends on your preferences and activities.
Summer (June to August) offers great temperatures for water sports like scuba diving, kayaking, and swimming. However, it’s when you’ll find more crowds, and you need to book everything way in advance.
Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) provide pleasant temperatures for cycling, hiking, and sightseeing with fewer crowds. To us, April, May, June, September, and October are the best times to go .
Winter (December to February) is the lowest season. No crowds at all and pleasant temperatures, so it’s perfect for hiking! However, you might find some restaurants and accommodations closed.
Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, such as sneakers or hiking sandals , as there will be a lot of walking and hiking on most of the Costa Brava day trips from Barcelona we’ve mentioned before.
CamĂ de Ronda is a hiking path, so we don’t recommend doing it in flip-flops.
If you’re eating out, it’s good to know that tipping is not mandatory in Spain. But, if you love the food and service, then by all means, tip! It will be greatly appreciated.
We hope this post makes you want to squeeze a day outside Barcelona and discover the beautiful Costa Brava region! We’ll assure you won’t regret it. If you think about any other day trips to Costa Brava from Barcelona, let us know in the comments! đ

Where is the best place to stay in Costa Brava?
The best place to stay in Costa Brava really depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re after luxury and relaxation, consider towns like Tossa de Mar or Lloret de Mar, known for their upscale resorts and beautiful beaches.

On the other hand, Cadaqués, a bit further north, is famous for its association with Salvador Dalà and has a more artistic, laid-back vibe. Begur, tucked away in the hills, is great for those who love exploring small cobbled streets and hidden coves.
Each of these towns offers a range of accommodations, from luxury resorts to cozy bed and breakfasts, catering to all tastes and budgets.
What are the best beach towns to stay in Costa Brava?
The best beach towns in Costa Brava are Llafranc, Calella de Palafrugell, and Roses. Llafranc is known for its elegance and tranquil beach, making it ideal for a relaxing seaside getaway. Calella de Palafrugell boasts beautiful coves and a traditional fishing village atmosphere.
Roses, on the northern edge of Costa Brava, offers a stunning bay and a lively beach scene.
Llafranc isn’t just about its beach – it’s also about the lovely promenade lined with cafes and restaurants. Calella de Palafrugell is perfect for those who enjoy scenic walks and exploring rocky coves. Roses, apart from its expansive beach, is a great base for visiting the
Cap de Creus Natural Park and the nearby Aiguamolls de l’EmpordĂ wetlands. These towns not only offer beautiful beaches but also a rich cultural and natural experience, making them ideal for both short and long stays.
What is the easiest way to get from Barcelona to Costa Brava?
The easiest way to get from Barcelona to Costa Brava depends on your destination within the region. For most towns, driving is the most convenient option, especially if you plan to explore multiple spots along the coast. Regular bus services are available to major towns like Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, and Blanes.
For towns further north like Cadaqués, a combination of train and bus might be needed.
If you’re driving, the coastal towns of Costa Brava are easily accessible via the AP-7 motorway and various coastal roads. This gives you the flexibility to stop at different towns and beaches along the way.
For those who prefer public transport, the bus network offers direct or connecting services to major towns from Barcelona’s EstaciĂł del Nord.
And for destinations like Cadaqués, you can take a train to Figueres from Barcelona, and then a bus to Cadaqués. This journey offers a chance to experience the scenic beauty of the region, although it takes longer than driving.
How do I get from Barcelona to Costa Brava without a car?
Getting from Barcelona to the Costa Brava without a car is quite straightforward thanks to the region’s good public transport connections. The main options are buses and trains, which serve different parts of the coast.
Buses are generally more direct for most beach towns, while trains can be a good option for reaching towns close to railway stations.
The buses from Barcelona to various Costa Brava towns depart from Estació del Nord bus station. Companies like Sarfa offer regular services to popular destinations like Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, and Cadaqués.
The journey times vary depending on the destination but expect anything from 1 to 2 hours. For towns not directly served by bus, you can take a bus to the nearest major town and then a local bus or taxi.
How do I get to the Costa Brava from Barcelona by train?
To reach the Costa Brava by train from Barcelona, youâll primarily be using the Renfe, Spainâs national railway company. The main line to consider is the R1, which runs along the coast. It connects Barcelona to towns like Blanes, Malgrat de Mar, and Pineda de Mar, which are on the southern end of the Costa Brava.
From these train-accessible towns, you can catch a local bus or taxi to get to other destinations along the coast. The trains run frequently throughout the day, and the journey can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours depending on your destination.
Remember, while trains are a comfortable and scenic way to travel, they don’t serve the entire Costa Brava, so you might need additional transportation to reach some of the more remote towns.
How do you get around in Costa Brava?
Getting around in Costa Brava varies based on where you are. In larger towns like Lloret de Mar or Blanes, there are good public transport options including local buses and taxis. In smaller towns or to explore more secluded beaches and coves, renting a car or using taxis is more practical.
The local bus network in Costa Brava is quite extensive and can connect you to various towns and beaches. It’s a cost-effective way to travel, especially if you’re sticking to the more popular destinations.
For exploring off the beaten path or if you value flexibility, renting a car might be your best bet. This gives you the freedom to visit remote coves, hilltop villages, and other hidden gems at your own pace.
Just remember that parking can be challenging in the smaller towns during peak season. For short distances within towns, walking or cycling can be delightful ways to soak in the local atmosphere. Many towns have bike rental services, and the scenic paths along the coast offer stunning views.
Do I need a car in Costa Brava?
Whether you need a car in Costa Brava depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. If you plan to explore beyond the main towns and beaches, a car can be quite handy. However, if you’re sticking to major towns or don’t mind using public transport, you can get by without one.
Having a car in Costa Brava gives you the flexibility to discover lesser-known villages, secluded beaches, and stunning viewpoints at your own pace. It’s especially useful if you’re staying in one of the smaller towns or planning to hop between several spots along the coast.
On the flip side, during peak season, parking can be a challenge in popular areas, and some of the coastal roads can be quite narrow. If you’re not comfortable driving in such conditions or prefer a more relaxed trip, the region’s buses and trains connect the main tourist destinations efficiently.
Many travelers enjoy a mix of both, using public transport for easy-to-reach places and renting a car for a day or two to explore off the beaten path.
Is it worth going to Costa Brava?
Absolutely, it’s worth going to Costa Brava! This region offers a rich blend of beautiful beaches, charming towns, cultural heritage, and fantastic cuisine. It’s a versatile destination, appealing to beach lovers, history buffs, foodies, and adventure seekers alike.
Costa Brava is more than just its coastline. The region is dotted with medieval towns like Pals and Begur, where you can wander through ancient streets and soak in centuries of history.
For art enthusiasts, Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador DalĂ, is a must-visit. The area’s culinary scene is another highlight, with fresh seafood, traditional Catalan dishes, and superb local wines.
Plus, there are plenty of activities, from hiking and snorkeling to exploring hidden coves and relaxing in seaside cafes. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed beach holiday, a cultural journey, or outdoor adventures, Costa Brava has something to offer everyone.
(And if you’re not a huge fan of beaches but still want some outdoor experiences? Why not head from Barcelona to Andorra for an easy mountain escape!)
Why is Costa Brava famous?
Costa Brava is famous for its stunning Mediterranean coastline, which features a mix of rugged cliffs, secluded coves, and sandy beaches. The region is also known for its charming towns, rich cultural heritage, and culinary delights.
The natural beauty of Costa Brava is unparalleled, with places like Cap de Creus and the Medes Islands offering breathtaking landscapes and excellent opportunities for outdoor activities. The region’s beaches range from wide, sandy stretches to hidden bays accessible only by foot or boat.
Beyond its natural appeal, Costa Brava has a deep cultural and artistic heritage, most notably associated with Salvador DalĂ. Towns like CadaquĂ©s and Figueres are integral to the DalĂ story.
Furthermore, the region’s gastronomy is renowned, characterized by fresh seafood, traditional Catalan dishes, and locally produced wines. All these elements combined make Costa Brava a unique and enchanting destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.
Can Costa Brava be a day trip from Barcelona?
Yes, Costa Brava can be a day trip from Barcelona. It’s close enough and there are plenty of beautiful spots within a 1-2 hour drive or bus ride from the city. For a day trip, you might want to focus on one or two nearby towns or beaches to maximize your time.
Popular day trip destinations include Tossa de Mar, with its stunning beaches and medieval castle, or Calella de Palafrugell for a quieter, more traditional vibe. If you start early, you can spend a good part of the day exploring, whether it’s lounging on a beach, strolling through old towns, or enjoying some local cuisine.
Keep in mind that while a day trip gives you a taste of the Costa Brava, it won’t cover the diversity and breadth of experiences the region offers. If you’re keen on seeing more, consider staying for a night or two.
How many days is enough in Costa Brava?
Ideally, spending 3 to 5 days in Costa Brava gives you enough time to explore and appreciate the region without feeling rushed. This allows you to visit several different towns and beaches, and maybe even venture into some of the inland attractions.
In three days, you could explore the southern towns like Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar, as well as some of the northern gems like CadaquĂ©s or Begur. Adding a couple more days lets you enjoy more leisurely experiences, like boat trips, hiking in the Cap de Creus Natural Park, or even visiting some of the region’s famous vineyards.
Each town in Costa Brava has its own unique charm, so spending a little extra time lets you soak in the atmosphere and discover hidden treasures at a relaxed pace.
What are the best months to visit Costa Brava?
The best months to visit Costa Brava are May, June, September, and October. During these months, the weather is warm and pleasant, perfect for beach activities and exploring, but without the intense heat or crowds of July and August.
May and June offer the beauty of late spring and early summer, with blooming landscapes and comfortably warm days. The water temperatures are getting warmer, making it nice for swimming.
September and October are great for those who prefer a quieter experience, as the summer crowds have left, but the weather is still mild and enjoyable. These months are also excellent for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling, as the temperatures are cooler than the peak summer months.
While July and August are also popular due to the summer holidays, they can be quite crowded and hot, so if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, the shoulder months are your best bet.
Is the sea warm in Costa Brava?
The sea in Costa Brava can be quite warm, especially during the summer months. From June to September, the water temperatures are typically comfortable for swimming, often reaching around 20-25°C (68-77°F). However, outside of these months, the sea can be a bit cooler, so it’s less ideal for those who prefer warmer water.
The water temperature starts to warm up around late May and remains pleasant through early October. The warmest months for swimming are usually July and August.
For water sports like snorkeling or scuba diving, many people wear wetsuits outside the peak summer months to stay comfortable. The sea temperature varies slightly depending on which part of the Costa Brava you’re in, with the southern areas generally being a bit warmer than the northern parts.
What is the most scenic part of Costa Brava?
The most scenic part of Costa Brava is arguably the stretch between the towns of Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués. This area is renowned for its rugged coastline, picturesque coves, and charming seaside villages. The Cap de Creus Natural Park, near Cadaqués, offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the region.
The area around Cap de Creus is particularly stunning, with its dramatic cliffs and unique rock formations. The coastal path known as CamĂ de Ronda offers incredible views and connects many of the small coves and beaches along the way.
Additionally, the medieval towns like Pals and Begur add to the scenic charm with their historic architecture and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and coastline.
Where to stop in Costa Brava?
When traveling through Costa Brava, there are several must-stop places that offer a mix of beautiful scenery, cultural experiences, and relaxation. Tossa de Mar is great for its blend of beaches and history, including a well-preserved medieval castle. Calella de Palafrugell is perfect for experiencing a traditional fishing village atmosphere and beautiful coves.
For art lovers, CadaquĂ©s is a must-visit, known for its connection to Salvador DalĂ. Additionally, Llafranc is a charming town with a lovely beach and promenade, ideal for a relaxed day by the sea.
Begur is another stop worth considering for its medieval castle and stunning views of the coast. For nature enthusiasts, the Cap de Creus Natural Park offers excellent hiking opportunities and some of the most unique landscapes in the region.
Which is nicer: Costa del Sol or Costa Brava?
Choosing between Costa del Sol and Costa Brava really depends on what youâre looking for in a vacation. If you prefer warmer weather and a more lively beach scene, go for Costa del Sol. If you’re interested in a more diverse landscape with cultural richness, Costa Brava is the better choice.
Costa del Sol, in the south of Spain, is famous for its warm climate, sandy beaches, and vibrant nightlife. It’s a great choice for those looking for a classic beach holiday with plenty of sun and lively towns like Marbella and Malaga.
Costa Brava, on the other hand, offers a more varied landscape with its rugged coastline, hidden coves, and charming medieval towns. It’s ideal for travelers seeking a mix of beach relaxation, cultural experiences, and natural beauty.
The region is also known for its artistic heritage, particularly the town of CadaquĂ©s and its connection to Salvador DalĂ.

Roger (as in Roger Rabbit) and Katja hosted an awesome trip. One might even say it was âdivertida â. The bus was clean: 5 stars! I spilled a cervesa on my pantalones⊠and a little also got on my camisa. ZERO stars⊠for myself. I should have been more careful. My mother-in-law tripped and scraped her rodilla⊠zero stars⊠but Katja was very helpful and made sure she was comfortable. SEVEN stars! Montserrat is asombroso! Four stars. My youngest son thought his tapas in the restaurant in Girona was too caliente⊠minus TWO stars! I took my picture with a bronze statue of Ava Gardner⊠back to FIVE stars! Overall, it was an incredibly excelente time! CINQUO ESTRELLAS!!!
Great tour of some amazing places

Great tour, our tour guides Bosco and Roger were fantastic and very helpful. This is the perfect tour if you want to combine the Monserrat Monastery with a Costa Brava visit plus the amazing Girona in one day, lots of walking but so worth it! Everything was very well organized with free time in all three locations. 100% recommend!
Beyond our expectations!

We loved our three destinations. Our guide Bosco was excellent. The only issue was the air conditioning on the bus went out and it was very warm.

Marco was a great tour guy. He has a lot of patience with your typical tourist. He's very informative and he handled the whole trip with care and grace. Our touring group witnessed a deadly car collision and he handled it with compassion. Will definitely book again with him.

My family had a great time on this tour! Although we went to Tossa de Mar for our third visit, we were hoping to get a little more into the smaller sleepy fishing town feel for our final stop vs. the hustle and bustle of a large beach town. That said, out tour guide was great, personable and took family photos as well. I will definitely recommend this trip to others!

This trip was phenomenal, the three locales were all great. The last one, Tossa de Mar, was stunningly beautiful. Marco, our guide, was also great- his English was great, and he paced the tour beautifully. Monserrat and Girona are also canât-miss.
What a deal!

We were skeptical when this tour was listed at 50% off, but realized it was a promotion since it just got listed on The Tour Guy. What a value! Would have paid full price if I had known how good it was, but loved the deal!
Lots of Great Stops

Barcelona Day Trip on: Barcelona Magic Fountain 2025
Barcelona day trip on: best barcelona markets 2025, best barcelona restaurants, exceptional food in 2025, barcelona viewpoints, our top 5 incredible cityscapes, museums in barcelona, city festivals barcelona 2025, frequently asked questions, is 1 day enough for barcelona / how many days do you need in barcelona.
1 day is enough in Barcelona.. if you want to fall in love and spend money on many more trips here in the future! We'd recommend at least 2-3 days in any city, especially in Barcelona.
There is so much on offer, to visit and to see, that 1 day will leave you wanting more. Understandably, it's often the case that people are coming here for work, or simply to catch a flight out of the city after being elsewhere in Spain.
If that's true for you, then yes, you can have a blast in 1 day, but if you're asking this particular question.. we hope you have the choice to stay a little longer and join us for one of the best Barcelona Day Trips you can find!
If you do choose to join us on a Barcelona Day Trip to the Costa Brava, you'll arrive back in the city at around 8pm with time to explore, have a meal and maybe a little dance in the city!
Can Barcelona be a day trip?
Barcelona can be a day trip yes! If you're staying in one of the surrounding villages, Girona, or another close province and don't have much time to visit the city, there are many options for day trips from most of the surrounding areas.
As we recommend above, ideally, you'd want to spend around 2-3 days exploring the city and visiting some of the main sites. However, if that's not an option then yes of course you can. We'd recommend only booking in a couple of things to not over exert yourselves, or be in a rush.. Everything will be here the next time you visit!
Pick 1 monument / building to visit Have a walk along the beach Explore El Born or the Gothic quarter (either solo or on a 'Free' walking tour for some history and context Have a bite to eat or lots of bites to eat in a local market Find a bar to try some Sangria / Vermouth and local tapas
And of course.. book a fantastic Barcelona Day Trip out of the city and come with us to kayak the Costa Brava!
What is there to do in Barcelona in 4 hours?
There is a lot to do in Barcelona in 4 hours! We have this question a lot from people coming on shore leave, from Cruise Ships. Although we are not able to provide any 4 hour tours from Barcelona to the Costa Brava, we can safely say that you will have a fun choice of activities to choose from.
We'd recommend choosing 1 activity and then finding a lovely little terrace (bar / restaurant), for some drinks and tapas. The 3 best short actives we think you could try within 4 hours are:
A Paella cooking class or a cooking school in Barcelona city centre. Learning to cook Paella in a small group is fun, interactive, inclusive and memorable. Available for all ages and all dietary needs the whole class will be about 2.5-3 hours long.
That includes meeting a chef at a market to collect your ingredients, cooking (together) your delicious paella, drinking lots of Sangria and of course, eating your professionally made dish.
Luckily, Barcelona Day Trip can recommend a class (with confidence), for you to try: https://www.gastronomicartsbarcelona.com/
A Free walking tour. Barcelona Day Trip Free walking tours are coming in 2024! You can find free walking tours all around the world and Barcelona is no different! The word 'Free' means, it's free to sign up however the guides have to make money somehow so there is always time at the end of the tour to leave a contribution or tip as a thank you.
There are many free guided tours in Barcelona so have a quick google and see which one takes your fancy. Normally they are between 1-2 hours long and cover various points in history, architecture, and even the supernatural.
Choosing 1 building / monument to visit. We'd always recommend visiting La Sagrada Familia as it is truly majestic inside.
Literally, it will take your breath away, and even if you're not a religious person, there is something incredibly spiritual about the way the sun light transforms into the main room.
It's very impressive from the outside but if you can book a guided tour and visit the inside, you will not be disappointed.
What are the best Day Trips in Barcelona?
The best Barcelona Day Trip? Well.. I mean.. obviously a 'Barcelona Day Trip' to kayak the Costa Brava is the best Day Trip!
But seriously, we are so happy to provide amazing trips to the Costa Brava, it's a privilege, and while we aspire to give and maintain 5* experiences to all our customers we couldn't say that we're the best day trip for everyone... especially if you can't swim đ
There are many day trips to choose from and it totally depends on what you're interests are (of course). Also, age, group size, occasion and budget.
However we are happy to give an idea of some spectacular day trips you can try from Barcelona. (As long as you promise to check out our kayak Barcelona day trip to the Costa Brava).
Kayaking and snorkelling on the Costa Brava from Barcelona Day Trip! haha ok, ok, you know this one..
Girona city - Girona is a super beautiful small town, also the set location for a few scenes in Game of Thrones! You can reach Girona (the province that homes the Costa Brava, the city of Girona is in land), by fast train from Barcelona.
The journey by train is just shy of 40 minutes and you can walk easily into the centre from the station. A river divides the city and the old city walls surround it. There is a fantasic tourist information office that can help you discover many hidden treasures.
Sitges - Just down the coast from Barcelona is coastal town of Sitges. It's a lovely little spot and if you're lucky enough to be here during a festival, it's well worth a visit to see the parade and enjoy a super fun street party!
There are loads of beautiful little streets, old buildings and of course, the beach so you can swim. Bare in mind, there are parts that are nudest so maybe check beforehand if you have Grandma along on the holiday..
Montserrat Monastery - A short train ride away or a wide choice of guided tours from Barcelona, Montserrat is the huge mountian visible from planes flying into the city. It's home to an incredible Monastery built into the rocks of the mountian.
You can choose a few different ways up, either hiking, a cable car (not on windy days), or a Funicular train from the bottom of the mountain. We'd recommend giving yourself time for a little hike around the top if you choose an 'easy' way up the mountain.
Vineyard tour - There are many vineyards on the other side of Montserrat, which is only possible because of the mountain itself. Montserrat blocks much of the cold air from the Pyrenees mountain range (that separates Spain and France), making the other side of Montserrat a perfect area for growing grapes.
There are many vineyards to choose from so we recommend a little digging into the type of wine you like and the vibe from the vineyard itself before you book.
Obviously we would love to have you along on one of our 5* rated Barcelona Day Trip tours to the best places in Costa Brava, so if you have any questions feel free to get in touch đ

Costa Brava Coastal Path Hike
If the idea of literally hiking your way across town is something that excites you, this is the tour for you. From Tossa de Mar in the center of Costa Brava, youâll make your way through the cliffs and coves of the Cami de Ronda coastline pathway.
Following your guided hike across the best parts of town, youâll then be able to have your lunch at one of the traditional restaurants. Explore local fishing villages and take a dip in the clear beach waters of Costa Brava.

Locals Love This Spanish Beach Gem Packed With History And Crystal Clear Water
Spain beckons visitors with its historic cities, vibrant culture, and tasty cuisine, not to mention hundreds of miles of stunning coastline. While many flock to the shores of Spain's Costa del Sol for beach bum bliss , you don't want to miss out on Sa Riera, a hidden gem on the Costa Brava with crystalline waters and history galore. The Costa Brava is a region in Spain's northeastern autonomous community of Catalonia. This idyllic coastal area is found north of Barcelona and extends to the French border. The area is characterized by its striking, rugged coastline, which offers views of white-washed cities, sparkling sea coves, rich history, and a delightful Mediterranean climate.
Of Costa Brava's many beaches, Sa Riera is a glittering Mediterranean jewel, complete with golden sand and turquoise waters. This stunning cove is 1.7 miles from Begur, a town just a few hours outside Barcelona with charming historic streets and medieval buildings. Not far from Sa Riera are two cultural powerhouses that make perfect day trips to boost your holiday: the wild and wacky DalĂ Theatre Museum and the ancient Ruins of EmpĂșries. Pack a swimsuit and a guidebook with the most important Spanish phrases tourists should know for a vacation to Spain , and get ready to explore one of the Costa Brava's most tantalizing regions.
Swim, snorkel, and snack at Sa Riera
As a crescent of golden sand with the texture of sugar, Sa Riera is the perfect spot to spread out a towel and relax for the afternoon. The beach is named for the small stream that slices it in two â the right side bears moored sailboats, while the left side is open for beach-goers. The cove is hugged by rocky cliffs with white houses peeking out from the dense Mediterranean vegetation. Go for a dip in the refreshing aquamarine waters, or grab a mask and fins to snorkel along the rocky bay. Dive enthusiasts should check out Sa Barraca Waterhouse, a certified diving center offering courses and diving trips around the Sa Riera area. Swim through schools of fish or explore the bottom of the sea under the guidance of excellent instructors.
If you've worked up an appetite after your snorkel or dive session, head over to Recer de la Mar for elegant dining and attentive service. The restaurant's cuisine is Mediterranean with a twist, with Spanish classics, like ham croquettes, and exploratory dishes, like handmade Monkfish ravioli and spicy prawn dim sum. If you need a snack but can't be bothered to leave the beach, the seaside La Gandula has you covered, serving food and drinks right on Sa Riera. Enjoy a ration of patatas bravas (potatoes with a smoky sauce) and an ice-cold Spanish beer while gazing out over the sparkling Mediterranean. In addition to a beach bar, Sa Riera's amenities include showers, toilets, and lifeguards during the summer, creating a pleasant experience at this Costa Brava gem.
Day trips from Sa Riera
Venture beyond the beach to enjoy the cultural richness of this coastline. Art lovers can't miss the DalĂ Triangle, three interconnected museums dedicated to the mustachioed Spanish surrealist painter Salvador DalĂ. The most popular of the three is the DalĂ Theater-Museum, just over 30 miles from Sa Riera in the town of Figueres. The hot pink facade is adorned with large egg sculptures and a massive glass globe, being crowned as "the world's largest Surrealist object." Once a former theater, DalĂ reimagined this space as a testament to his artistic career and donated the museum to his hometown of Figueres. Venture inside for an immersive, multi-faceted experience, as the eccentric world of DalĂ is portrayed through his sculptures, paintings, photography, and even holograms.
The Ruins of EmpĂșries are another must-see along the Costa Brava, a testament to the millennia of history along this coastline. Just a 40-minute drive from Sa Riera, these Greco-Roman ruins will transport visitors back in time. The area around the seaside town of Sant MartĂ d'EmpĂșries was once used as a Greek trading post before the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Visitors can tour the ancient ruins, walking past defensive walls, a center dedicated to the Greek god of medicine, Roman public baths, a forum, and striking black and white mosaics. Instead of heading back to Barcelona once you're done, visit Valencia for spacious beaches and excellent restaurants .
