TOMTOM Go Camper Review - Motorhome and Caravan Sat nav device… from TomTom!

When it was announced by TomTom that they were releasing a new “Camper” model, we thought “At last TomTom is back with an all new Caravan and campervan sat nav device!” We were very excited to get our hands on this new device to give it a try.

The TomTom Go Camper being specially designed for using with motorhomes, campervans and caravans includes a lot of useful features that will be helpful to campervan and caravan drivers.

This model comes loaded with millions of POIs (points of interest) although not all of these POIs are dedicated to campers, as TomTom also intends the device to be used with cars. There is however a large number of POIs which will be very useful for trips with campervans or caravans. As with all Motorhome and caravan sat nav devices, the itineraries are planned by the Go Camper using the size and weight of the vehicle.

Caravan and Motorhome sat nav, the Go Camper manages vehicle’s weight and size

As you turn on the Go Camper for the first time, it will launch a configurator which will ask you to enter the profile information of the vehicle you’ll be using. This can be a car, a car with caravan, a light camper, or a heavy camper (motorhome). You can then enter all the appropriate information regarding the size and weight of the vehicle. Setting this information is easy but is a very important step as it will allow the system to provide you with appropriate itineraries.

The TomTom Go Camper, unlike the other caravan and motorhome sat nav devices we’ve reviewed, offers very detailed worldwide maps . These maps include all the restrictions you may face with your motorhome / campervan or caravan, such as weight limits, narrow roads, and height restrictions.

The motorhome sat nav Go Camper offers good lane guidance

This new Go Camper includes the Advanced Lane Guidance feature that can now be found on most of the models from the TomTom range. It is very similar to the “Active Lane Guidance” from the Garmin models. Thanks to this feature, the device is able to create a display that makes it easy to be in the correct lane at complicated junctions and exits. It splits the screen adding synthetic images with animations such as arrows pointing in the right direction and vocal indications.

Lifetime World Map updates for the TomTom Go Camper!

This new caravan and motorhome sat nav offers free world map updates. Updating maps on a sat nav can be expensive so this is something you should consider when comparing caravan and motorhome sat nav devices. Having the possibility to update the maps for free means you are always up-to-date with the latest maps and points of interests and therefore you know you will be getting reliable information on campgrounds, campsites, equipments, and accurate itinerary planning.

A great feature we really like on the Go Camper is the ability to update maps without having to use a computer . Indeed, this caravan and motorhome sat nav comes with built-in Wi-Fi which means you can connect the device to your home network (just like with a tablet or a smartphone) and download all updates straight from the screen using the built-in interface. This is very convenient as it makes updating the sat nav a lot easier and quicker!

Live services with a built-in SIM card : the great feature of this caravan sat nav

Having access to real time information when on the road with your caravan or campervan is very helpful. Most motorhome and caravan sat nav devices now offer live services. These can sometimes require a subscription, or as with the Garmin models, you sometimes have to use the data plan on your phone to provide the sat nav with internet via Bluetooth. This new model from TomTom comes with a built-in SIM card which is, we believe, the most convenient and efficient way to get live information. Indeed, there is nothing you have to do (no apps to install, no settings to touch, no phone to pair) the device automatically connects to the available network and thus has access to internet to provide you with live information. The service is free and TomTom also say there will be no extra charges when using the live services abroad (no roaming charges). We double checked and live services are actually limited to the countries included in the map installed on the device when purchased.

The live services provided include traffic information which we found to be pretty accurate. This service gets traffic information when planning an itinerary and during the journey in order to allow us to avoid congestion.

The live services also include information on speed cameras . We found this to be very accurate with fixed cameras (tested in the UK and a journey in France) but didn’t have the opportunity to see it in action with mobile cameras although it does claim to warn you of those cameras as well. The system can also warn the driver when entering a zone with an average speed camera, reminding you of the current speed limit and indicating the average speed of the vehicle in the zone.

Is the Motorhome sat nav TomTom Go Camper easy to use?

TomTom sat nav devices have often been known for their ease of use and intuitive interface. This new generation model is indeed true to the TomTom reputation adding also modern technology such as the new fully interactive screen. This multitouch display is similar to the ones we are now used to on our phones and tablets in that it allows you to swipe, pinch and zoom.

The TomTom Go Camper also does a good job at displaying the current useful information like the true current speed, the specific speed limits for the vehicle, and very reliable estimated time of arrival (using the real time traffic information).

Efficiency of the Voice control and Hands free features

This TomTom model offers a voice control feature that is also compatible with Siri and Google Now . You can press a button on the screen and control your phone using the built-in microphone on the device. Pairing the phone to the Go Camper via Bluetooth is also pretty straightforward. To activate voice control on this model you simply say “Hello TomTom!” and the motorhome sat nav will display a list of voice activated controls. There are dozens of commands available for navigation such as “When will I get there?” or “Got to a car park”, and also many commands for the device’s settings like “Volume up / down”, “Day / night colours”, etc. We thought the voice control feature on the Go Camper was comprehensive and efficient.

The Bluetooth hands free feature enables the user to make phone calls. As with most sat nav devices it is decent but not as good as dedicated devices such as factory mounted units. The TomTom Go Camper also offers a Text to Speech feature which enables the device to read aloud messages received on the paired mobile phone. This is a great safety feature.

The Weaknesses of this Caravan and Motorhome Sat nav

• Having World Maps is great but it is important to note that the device comes pre-loaded with one map (Europe,for example). Thus you will need to add new maps manually using the built-in Wi-Fi when using the device in other parts of the world.

Our opinion on the Caravan and Motorhome Sat Nav TomTom Go Camper

The fact that TomTom is back in the world of Motorhome and Caravan sat navs is great news and we know many camping enthusiasts had been waiting for this device! This new Go Camper is a modern version of the previous model that was manufactured quite a few years ago now. It is a very comprehensive device and will definitely meet a great success especially with users who love the TomTom brand. It is intuitive and easy to use, on the road as well as at home thanks to the Wi-Fi connection and the TomTom MyDrive application which allow to prepare for upcoming journeys. This Motorhome and caravan sat nav device is however quite expensive at this time when compared to its main competitor, the Garmin 660 LMT D .

What is it?

A TomTom sat nav for camper van drivers and those towing a caravan. This means you get all of the route and traffic features of the standard TomTom, with the peace of mind that the Go Camper won't take you on a route that will leave you stuck down a small road that isn't suitable for the weight and/or size of your van. 

As with the majority of TomToms, world maps and traffic updates and safety camera locations are included at no extra cost for the lifetime of the device. The Go Camper also has full access to TomTom MyDrive, which allows you to download roadtrips, camping sites and stopover locations. 

As well as featuring built-in WiFi, the TomTom doubles up as a handsfree unit for your smartphone via Bluetooth. It'll also connect to your phone’s data, to download new maps and updates. If you don't want to lose your mobile data allowance in a haze of sat nav updates, you can complete this process with the built-in WiFi each time you connect to compatible network.

What's it like?

The TomTom Go Camper is a smart little device. The six-inch touchscreen is wide, colourful and bright - which makes it simple to read when on the move. The 6.0-inch, touchscreen nav can be attached to the windscreen or dashboard via a magnetic mount, which attaches the device to the screen with a simple twist of the mount.

You can also fit the TomTom to the dashboard with a sticky plastic disc that connects to the mount and releases in the same fashion. Just be sure not to fit the sticky disc to the windscreen by mistake - it's super, super sticky and in all likelihood won't come off. The built-in battery provides one hour of use and can be recharged by plugging the device into the vehicle’s 12V power outlet or USB socket.

Once plugged in and attached, you need to enter some vital stats about your camper van. This means the length, width and weight. You'll also need to tell the TomTom about the van's legal maximum speed. Once armed with this data, the router will do its best to avoid any roads that are not suitable for your van.

It'll also calculate the best route to fit your van's speed restrictions (if it has any) to ensure you get to your destination in the quickest, stress-free fashion. The Go Camper can be set to accommodate a light or large camper, as well as a car with a caravan.

Using the Go Camper is easy, thanks to the large screen that has a light touch sensitivity that means you don't have to press particularly hard to use it. The route directions are among the best of any sat nav unit on sale today, with the device giving plenty of time to inform the driver of a turn or junction.

The little unit comes into its own when several turns in succession are needed, which means - for example - if turning left after a roundabout, the device will say: "take the first exit at the roundabout and then take the first left onto King's road before turning immediately right". This is particularly useful on busy roads, where sudden lane changes in a long wheelbase, high roof van might be difficult.

However, while the TomTom is great in town and on the motorway with live traffic updates and reroute options to avoid delays, it struggles when you reach the open countryside. During our test the TomTom lost signal on two occasion, with one instance lasting 25 minutes. This forced us to stop and revert to the old fashioned paper map to find our destination.

The camper routing - which is based on the van's size - was also problematic. The Go Camper took us down a few narrow county lanes and, admittedly, the roads were wide enough for the van but it became somewhat difficult when we met a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

Should I buy one?

The TomTom Go Camper is a slick bit of kit with lots of useful features that take a lot of the hassle out of a long distance drive. The touchscreen tech in particular is impressive. In our view, TomTom’s touchscreen tech is as good as anything you’ll find in a modern car. The route directions are also accurate and well-timed, which makes the Go Camper a great companion on a busy motorway or town centre.

However, we found the signal drop to be a real pain when driving in rural areas. The camper van routes - which are customised to fit the van's size and weight - were mostly fine, but again the Go Camper was prone to the odd bout of confusion as it sent our van down single track B roads that would leave the door mirrors brushing against hedgerows and trees.

That said, route directions to camp sites and places of interest were faultless. We found the parking feature to be great for finding camper van friendly places to park up for a couple of hours to explore a town or village.

Priced at £380, the TomTom Go Camper is an expensive bit of kit and we’re not sure the additional functions really justify the extra cost compared to the cheaper Go 520 (£220) or Go 6200 (£299). If you own a smart phone and windscreen dock, you can access some excellent apps, which include the accomplished CoPilot Caravan that provides a similar camper van routing system as the TomTom for just £35.

TomTom Go Camper Review – A Vanlifers Dream SatNav

As Vandwellers we love the notion of wanderlust; there’s no other feeling like getting off the grid and experiencing all of the hidden gems that the wilderness has to offer. But sometimes we all need a helping hand when we’re creating our own van life stories , especially when we’re delving into different countries and unknown territories. Sometimes you need a little calming voice to tell you which way to turn and points of interest that you might have missed along the way. That’s where the TomTom Go Camper comes in, and it’s one serious bit of kit!

TomTom Go Camper – Bring The Road Trips Of Your Dreams To Life!

You know that we can’t get enough of our gadgets and van life essentials , so when we received the brand new TomTom Go Camper to test out we immediately downloaded the Brian Blessed voice pack and hit the open road in search of adventure (GORDON’S ALIVE…go straight ahead to carry on reading).

Sat Nav’s have been around for a long time now, but there hasn’t been one that has stood out as being specifically for campers and the van life movement, until now that is. The TomTom Go Camper doesn’t just get you from A to B in the quickest possible time, it’s purposely designed to get you driving down the best roads for your vehicle and on routes that have some interesting features that you might have otherwise missed.

The device itself is smooth and ergonomically designed, easily being held in one hand whilst you tap away with the other. The first thing you notice if you’re a regular Google Maps user is that the TomTom Go Camper is like a miniature widescreen tv, and the information on the screen is simple yet detailed enough for you to able to make out individual streets, avenues, blocks, and those all important hard to spot turn-offs that take you to the secret spots of legend.

It’s pretty rugged too; we brought a case along for the TomTom to sleep in to keep it from getting damaged, but it soon got stuffed inside bags and fell off the car seat when we were scrambling for our keys and it was perfectly fine! The outer casing is hard and the touch screen is nice and tough, so don’t worry too much if you’re a heavy handed navigator!

How Does It Work?

Before you get to typing in your favourite locations or searching for quiet country lanes to stop off and have a little snooze, there’s lots of ‘behind the scenes’ settings that you can set up to make your driving experience even better. The TomTom Go Camper allows you to enter your vehicle size, height and weight, as well as maximum speed limit and a whole host of other measurables to make sure that the route it provides is right for your individual vehicles. Now you no longer have to worry about your camper van conversions  or tiny homes  getting stuck under bridges or on narrow roads without a passing place!

When you get into the navigation mode itself you’ll find that it couldn’t be easier to use, with making and saving routes as easy as feeding Fruit Loops to a squirrel…(don’t try this at home). You can pick a location to drive to or use that location as a starting point for another route to work out potential future journeys. And not only that, but you can save journeys from your phone and laptop to your device to use later too. The TomTom Go Camper basically turns your tiny house  into Kit from Knight Rider – who doesn’t want a talking car?!

Whether you’re making routes on your phone to sync to your device or keying it straight into the TomTom itself, you have the option of adding extra stop off points and making your journey longer should you wish. One of the biggest selling points of the TomTom Go Camper is the fact that it lets you know points of interest along the way, expanding the experience of your best road trips tenfold! Now things that you might have missed and ancient burial grounds that you never knew existed can be explored on your way to the campsite, making you the number one explorer in your family or party (as long as you’re doing the navigating of course).

How Do I Update The Tom Tom Go Camper?

One of the best bits about the TomTom Go Camper is that it has built in WiFi. Now I know what you’re thinking and no, you can’t use it to watch the latest season of Man In The High Castle, but what it does mean is that you don’t have to have a computer to update it or download new maps. I tested this out and downloaded a few extra settings such as different voices and a map of Asia (you never know where the road might take you!) just by using the mobile tethering from my iPhone. As long as you have access to internet then you can download new maps and update traffic settings, but don’t worry too much if you don’t have the latest settings, it still works fine!

What’s The Best Feature?

There’s a number of different ways that you can view where the nearest petrol station or parking spot is whilst on your travels. First off, when you select your preference it will show you where the nearest ones are on a zoomed out map, giving you an instant indication of which one is closest. Then when you go into drive mode, theres a little side menu on the right hand side that tells you how many miles there are between your current location and the next station or parking spot. If you miss it then it instantly updates and brings the next one up, and when you get nearer the logo pops up bigger on the correct side of the road so that you know whether you need to safely cross oncoming traffic or stay in your lane.

Other great features come to life on motorways. Motorway driving can get incredibly confusing, especially if you’re somewhere new or on the wrong side of the road (or the right side of the road depending on where you come from!). The TomTom Go Camper helps you to understand which lane to come off on by using an arrow system at the top of the screen. If you’re on a four lane road and the left three go forward, only those arrows will light up so that you know where you’re going in good time. If there’s a complicated turn off  after an exit then the Sat Nav will also split the screen and show you what’s coming up next so that you don’t get any nasty surprises, and it also tells you when exits and toll gates are coming up on your route too.

Sometimes the blue ‘follow’ line disappears on long roads which took me a little while to get used to (the first time it happened I might have gone into a slight semi-Italian meltdown), but then I realised that this is so that you don’t get confused with the arrow system above. It removes one constant so that you don’t get confused with the new information that is being given to you which is pretty clever – IT’S ALIVE!

Final Thoughts…

The TomTom Go Camper is one of our van life essentials for any off grid camper , whether you’re considering living off the grid long term or just jetting off in your tiny home for the weekend. It’s a great way of discovering new places and landmarks as well as getting you from A to B in a safe and timely fashion. It’s easy to use and easy and even easier to update, just make sure you turn the key button sound off as it will annoy your passengers no end!

On Test: The New TomTom GO Camper SatNav

Anyone who lives in South or North Wales will tell you how hard it is to get from one to the other – so we thought navigating the route would be a good test for the new TomTom Go Camper .

Who is the Go Camper for?

TomTom is one of the best known UK SatNav manufacturers, with a good pedigree and a solid reputation for reliability and accuracy.

Targeting RVers and Caravan owners, this new model is designed to offer customised guidance based on the vehicle size and weight, avoiding unsuitable roads – less of a problem for us tent dwellers, but absolutely critical for large RV owners and caravanners.

It also features camping-related points of interest including campsites, live traffic info, wifi, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and lifetime map updates.

Interestingly, like many other AIs, the GO Camper has a choice of voice and will also accept voice commands in the car, activated by saying ‘hello TomTom’ – we opted for the female Irish accent (mainly because it made us smile and reminded me of my hilarious former colleague Alice, who always made me laugh with her Belfast lilt and funny one liners!)

Route Planning

Driving from South to North Wales is always a challenge. With no single connecting road, often the choice is to drive to England, then head North up the motorway then back into Wales… indeed this was the fastest route as suggested by our new friend TomTom, but let’s be honest, that’s no test. It’s also a pretty dull drive, whereas the middle route offers spectacular scenery, quaint little towns and plenty of nice places to stop for a breather.

We put our trust in TomTom and asked the AI, which by Brecon, we’d affectionately renamed Alice, to navigate a path though a series of higgledy piggledy roads right up through the middle of Wales.

Alice proceeded to navigate – perfectly. What we really liked about it is that as well as just the route, we could clearly see the quirks and landmarks of the road in a live display to the right of the map. We were only in a normal car, but had we been in a caravan or large RV, this would have been even more helpful, with sharp bends and tight turns given plenty of advance warning.

The road speeds are also marked on maps, however, as we drove through Brecon’s roads, some of the speeds were different to those marked, so our advice is to treat these as advisory – many of the roads marked as 40 were recently reduced to 30. It is possible that councils have failed to notify the map owners of any recent changes.

Helpfully, though, the TomTom GoCamper advises you in plenty of time where common speed cameras are – and on at least one occasion, it’s timely warning definitely helped us avoid a penalty – cheers Alice!

All went fantastically well until we got to Newtown, where a new bypass opened earlier this year. The map had been updated to the latest version, just 3 days old, but it seems work on the new bypass has continued – many of the roundabouts and exits looked brand new and were not mapped – we saw nothing as we approached on the map. This wasn’t a problem to guess on the way up, but on the way back our guesswork was a little less accurate, causing us to arrive in the middle of a residential area. Not at all a problem and all part of the travelling fun, we managed to find our way back as we eventually reached a mapped area. I’m sure by now this will have already been updated, the rest of our journey was spot on and incredibly smooth.

So how did the TomTom GO Camper perform overall?

TomTom clearly knew North Wales much better than us and enabled us to be a little more adventurous than normal, taking in many of the beauty spots in North East Wales – and we didn’t wind up in the sea. Or stuck in a ditch. (Our new friend Alice would have come in handy last week when we explored Gower, took a wrong turn and got stuck in a ditch just outside Llangennith!)

The travel times were pretty much spot on every time, and as she gently guided us back to South Wales, we didn’t seem to hit any huge traffic jams or major problems. TomTom navigated us through the heart of some of Wales most beautiful scenery, across the Brecon Beacons, with ease.

It is not the easiest of road journeys, but it is one of the most beautiful. With barely a foot wrong, TomTom GO Camper took us safely through more than 450 miles, from door to door and back again.

Of course, you can’t give SatNav credit for the views, but the timing was perfect. we set off just after sunrise, enjoying spectacular views of Pen y Fan and drove through Brecon at sunset on the way back. It was one hell of a trek and we loved it.

Would we buy one?

In recent years, SatNav has become available on just about any device, from phones to tablets, thanks to Google and iMaps. However a good SatNav like this is superior because it isn’t reliant on a phone signal and has useful information for campers that you wouldn’t have easy access to elsewhere.

Furthermore, travelling through mid-wales, where coverage can be patchy at best, has proved problematic on phones in the past, with frustration building as you wait for a signal. Priced at £379.99, it’s a lot less than repairing a dent because your RV or caravan went wide in a narrow turn.

Our Alice simply got on with the job of navigating and carried on like a trooper, steering our path effortlessly and over the course of the journey, she became an extra family member. Not least because every time she said ’roundabout’ in an irish accent, it made us laugh. Neither Google or Apple maps has ever done that, and they also don’t sit perfectly on the dashboard with the kind of detail normally only visible to rally drivers.

So yes, we’d buy one and we can happily recommend the TomTom GO Camper to our readers. But we won’t ever call her TomTom again – to us, she will always be Alice!

Review of the TomTom GO LIVE Camper and Caravan Sat Nav

We had been using a TomTom Go 960 for five or six years and hadn’t really any problems with it until we went to France, where in it decided to become French and in the best Gallic tradition went on strike with no notice ( here’s the story ). That set us on the path of looking for a new GPS.

Being a pilot, I had ‘grown up’ so to speak with Garmin over nearly 20 years and trusted Garmin products to navigate me round the world and drop me on a runway centreline from 1200 nautical miles away… including crossing the Atlantic a few times. But looking for a GPS for caravanning, Garmin didn’t a offer a product that fitted the my idea of what I wanted.

We did consider the Snooper unit and looked closely at it at the Manchester Caravan Show, but it had two major drawbacks for me. One, you can’t load your own POI’s (Point Of Interest) and second, the software didn’t run natively on an Apple Mac. As we havent had a PC in the house for over 7 years, I wasn’t going to get a PC just to update a GPS, nor did I want to install a Microsoft emulator on any of the Mac’s and buy a copy of Windows. ( I also believe you can’t enter a LAT & LONG to navigate to, but that my be hearsay)

As we had been happy with our old TomTom up to the point it went on strike, we looked at the TomTom Go Live Camping & Caravan unit. Specification  wise it ticked all the boxes. It allowed us to enter our own POI’s, transfer our POI files from our old TomTom and for some sites (  La Tournerie near Montignac comes to mind) I’d done custom approaches based on specific instructions on how to get there.

After looking at various websites for pricing, it seemed like buying direct from TomTom  would not cost much more and it would probably easier dealing direct with the manufacturer if we had any problems.

I won’t go through unboxing it, but in the box you get everything you need – a 12 volt plug for your accessory socket that has a USB output, a USB to TomTom connection lead and the unit itself. You don’t get a manual…. you need to down load it from here –  http://download.tomtom.com/open/manuals/go1015_2050/refman/TomTom-GO-LIVE-en-gb.pdf

There is a quick setup document in the box that I suggest you follow first.

Unlike the older TomTom units that used TomTom Home software installed on your computer, this needs a different piece of software… more like an app. You open your browser window and download it from here –  tomtom.com/getstarted

It’s a fairly quick download and install.

Once set up, one of the first things to do in the device is to enter the tow vehicle and caravan dimensions. I also added the axle weights for the tow car and the MTPLM for the caravan as an axle weight. This ensures the unit will not route you over some of the small weight restricted bridges or roads. I suspect this is more important for large 4 x 4’s towing big twin axle caravans – but the facility is there so why not use it. By entering the weight I think it also cautions you if there are any steep hills on your planned route, but I have not verified this. You can also select the maximum speed of the combination at this point as well. This will make the journey time more accurate. Information on how to do all this starts at page 110 in the downloaded manual.

When you have done all that, you can connect your TomTom to your computer. The app will launch and it takes a minute or two to connect to TomTom and your device. It will open a new window in your browser…. and this is where everything is now done. If you havent already got a TomTom account, you will be prompted to create one, which is free. Once that is done and you are logged in, it will download any updates required, you have 90 days to update to the latest map free of charge.

The whole idea behind the Go Live version is the unit has built-in a GSM module which communicates via the mobile phone network to update the unit and to send information back to TomTom. The info that it sends back is about routing and road conditions, so if you are only moving at 20 MPH on the motorway, it sends this back to TomTom and that information is used to update other Go Live devices with road delays. It’s a bit more complex than that… but I think that’s the gist of it.

Bundled with the Go Live service are map updates, speed camera updates. quick fix updates and Map Share. However, to get the “Go Live” bit to work…. you have to subscribe, the first year is free – it comes with the device and currently it costs £47.50* per year after that.  (*correct at time of writing)

Updating the GPS

Once you have downloaded and installed “My TomTomSA” it can either run in the background or just started like any other bit of software. On a Mac it sits as an icon in the top bar and if you click on it a small window opens (see below). If there are any updates it lets you know and provides a link for details.

When you plug in the device using the supplied USB lead, it opens a new window in the browser (below)…. All the screenshots can be opened full size by clicking on them. NOTE: These screenshots are of Safari on a Mac, IE on a Windows machine might look slightly different.

When you click on “Get Updates” it will connect to your TomTom and invite you to log in to your TomTom account (below)

Once you have logged in to your TomTom account, it lists all the updates available in a little more detail and you click on the “Install” button to download each instance of an update. At this point you have to be patient. The download from TomTom and subsequent upload to your device are not particularly quick. If you have to download a 3Gb map update expect the download time counter to initially show two or three hours. This is a bit misleading the clock does reduce quicker than real-time, but in comparing the old TomTom Home download times, I think the new system is similar or even a little slower. However, gone are the multiple downloads for speed cameras for each country, these now come down directly to your device via the GSM link, so when you turn on your device, it initially takes a couple of minutes to download the speed camera updates and the traffic information. This does not slow down the use of your GPS. On start-up it is a lot quicker than our old TomTom 960 and can be used within 10 to 15 seconds once you have touched “OK” to acknowledge the information screen about data sent to TomTom.

OK, the next screen shot (below) is the actual download process. It shows what files are being downloaded and the file size. IN the example shown, I only had two updates so it took less than two minutes to download and send the updates to the device.

While in this screen, you can also check on the dates of your subscriptions to Go Live, and the currency of the map.

In the screen shot below, I opened the drop-down section to show the subscription to “My Speed Cameras”, it again tells you your subscription valid to date and at the foot of that box it tells you that speed cameras will be downloaded directly to your device.

If you are used to the old TomTom Home software for updating, this new software takes a little getting used to, but it is reasonably intuitive.  However, for me there is one big drawback. As all the updates are now done in a browser window, there is no progress bar to show you how the download and update is progressing. Instead all you get is a rotating circle of dots. The reason they have done this is understandable, it’s easy to run a bit of java script in a window to animate the dots, to actually move a progress bar along a box is a little more complex and would probably involve a lot more screen refreshes, which would slow the download process. A couple of times I thought that the software had actually stalled…. the key is a bit of patience and going putting the kettle on… a lot!

Once you get the hang of it, the update process is quite simple. One other thing I did notice with this device compared to the old TomTom 960 when updating, is the fact it works in the office. The old unit would rarely get a GPS satellite fix when sat on my desk while being updated. This TomTom however always gets a satellite fix within a few seconds when it is in exactly the same place on the desk.

Installation in the vehicle

The mounting for this device has moved on in technology terms. The power/data connector is similar to Apple’s “MagSafe” laptop connectors, in the fact that it uses magnets to stay connected. Magnets are also used to hold the device to the stand. Unless you actually see and feel it in action it sounds a bit dodgy using magnets, but the stand is well constructed and its as simple as placing the device on the lower lip of the stand and the power/data connector snaps itself into position as you lean the device back slightly you can feel the magnets pulling it back into the stand. So far I have not had any problems with the device falling out while being bounced about in a 4 x 4.

Another feature is when you turn your ignition on, the device turns on as well, so no button to press. When you turn your ignition off, it comes up with a screen “Shutting down in 5 seconds” and counts down unless you touch the cancel button.

The actual stand for the device is quite neat and comes with the option of a suction screen fitting, or a round plate that can be stuck to almost any surface to allow the suction cup to work. I opted for this method and routed the power cable down through the dash to a hidden accessory socket under the dash so I can leave the lead permanently plugged in and no trailing wire.

Once the device is in the stand, it’s quite a neat installation (or so I think!)

In use the screen is bright and clear and the stand can twist and tilt to give the driver the best viewing position. So far in the few weeks we have been using it I have not been in a position where I could not see the screen because of bright sun.

The screen renders images sharp and the touch screen is sensitive but not overly so. The area of contact is also quite accurate so hopefully no miss typed addresses.

The audio quality is quite good as well. The volume can now be increased to something you can hear clearly while doing 60 MPH on the motorway with the window open. If you use the standard computer generated voice rather than the recorded voices the pronunciation for some place names has improved remarkably, although not perfect by any means. It has all the usual features as many other devices on the market…. bluetooth linking to your phone for hands-free calling, the ability to store pictures and play music – features I have not explored.

The first few time we used it, we had it set as though we were towing a caravan although we were solo. It did route us successfully round all the locally known places where you couldn’t get with a caravan and I tried a route from home to our friends that live on the North Yorks Moors. Normally our old sat nav would route us via Sutton Bank, this time we got a route around Sutton Bank.

Live Traffic

The live traffic updates are quite accurate. As well as direct warnings for delays on your route, you can also see delays on roads around you. These take the form of hi-lighting the road with a ribbon in various colours depending on the type of delay with what looks like tiny marching dots. Now what is clever is if you look closely the ribbon will be to one side or the other of the road and the dots seem to move in the direction of the traffic. On the A66 we had some road works that were controlled by temporary traffic lights, on the screen it showed delays on the opposite direction to us. We got to the traffic lights and there were maybe five or six vehicles on our side, but in the other direction there must have been 100 to 150 vehicles in the queue. This is where the advantage of the “Go Live” bit comes in… other Go Live units feed back traffic flow information by virtue of where they are and how fast they are moving, this is processed and sent back as traffic delays to other users, so TomTom are not just taking traffic flow info from national traffic information services they are adding detail to it as well.

Things I don’t like

With our old GPS, sat on my drive I could go to one my POI files and it would bring up a list of all the POI’s in the file, so for example sat on the drive I could open my POI’s and scroll down the list and select Dover Docks that I had programmed in. With this device I can still go to my POI’s and open up my list, but it will only show my POI’s within a 50 mile radius of where I am. If I want to select my Dover Docks POI, I have to enter the town “DOVER” and it will show me all my POI’s within a 50 mile radius of Dover. I’m not sure if this can be changed so it shows my POI’s within say a 100 mile or 200 mile radius… something I have to investigate.

Other than that, I haven’t found anything else really to complain about so far.

Is it worth it?

At a list price of £329.99 at the time of writing, it’s not the cheapest of Sat Nav’s out there, but the question is “If I lost it would I buy another one?” Well the answer to that is ‘YES’ unless someone else brings out something to beat it, but for the moment there is nothing currently on the market for me that ticks all my boxes.

Thanks for this review. I have tomtom go a few years old and have had nothing but problems. It falls off the stand regularly. It cannot pick up satellite at my house in London suburb. It takes me down tiny roads as kind of short cuts between same A road, so decided to start afresh now I have a camper..

Have been looking at the Aguri, Snooper and Tomtom (to give them a chance that I got a rogue one) the Aguri is advertised in Camping and Caravanning club and I have spoken to them and it sounds good.

I am now deciding between these three. Comments on here about Snooper are veering me towards the other two.

My question is have you seen the spec for the Aguri RV700 with built in dash cam and if so what do you think? I have to have something simple to use. If not, is the TomTom easy to use and plot own route, can you use Long and Lat coordinates to plan a route? Can you tether it to your phone to check road conditions and up date maps on the go(I am a bit out of my depth with this but it is what the chap at Aguri told me)

We have the Tom Tom go live camper which we are happy with. Not happy that we have to pay for map updates every year after such a large outlay to begin with so are now looking at replacing with Tom Tom to the free map updates. We looked at the Aguri as friends of ours had it and liked the idea it had a camera on it but our friends couldn’t get it to work. They rang Aguri while in Spain and had a replacement sent out but that too is not working. We thought we would do a little research while we were on our European trip last month and asked all those we got chatting to what nav they used. There was a mix of Garmin, snooper, Tom Tom and Aguri. Problem was though 3 more Aguri users were having problems with there’s and one had also had a replacement sent out but was still experiencing problems. We borrowed our friends Aguri to see if we could get it to work but couldn’t. We found it flimsy and not as good quality also sound turned up was not loud enough.

I’ve just had a conversation with TomTom and asked if I could put the caravan map on my Go Live 820. It seems that you can (on certain devices) and mine is compatible.

We have a new Snooper Ventura – thinking it must be worth the price as it’s Caravan Club approved – but it took us miles out of our way through mountain roads and single track villages to avoid Narbonne in France, where the main road is straight, wide and with no hazards. It also tried to put us on to cart tracks, instructed us to take the next turning on the right which was the entry lane to the road we were on, and omitted to tell us take the next right exit to go south in Orleans rather than back to Paris – I could go on. Snooper is going back, but the larger size was a bonus. Any upgrade on the size of the TomTom would appeal to us. We have an ordinary museum-piece TomTom, which has seen us through France before, but it is ailing. I wish we could find something that doesn’t cost as much as the Snooper and the TomTom, but which does what it is meant to do.

The other option to consider is an iPad or tablet running the Tom Tom sat nav software. This would give you a larger screen. A tablet can be bought for around £120 plus the cost of the software and car charger.

I am considering the Tom Tom satnav but am tempted by the latest Snooper Ventura Pro 8500 with built in DAB TV etc. this seems to have good reviews online? In light of your second review on the Tom Tom would you consider the Snooper to replace your Tom Tom?

Hi Mark The latest Snooper does look a great product, however the limitations of not having any software for Mac’s only PC’s and the fact you cannot load your own POI’s would still mean I would go for the TomTom device.

TomTom in the last 12 months have made great efforts to address some of the issues and their MyDrive has changed completely and update issues have been resolved. As you can now get the TomTom with lifetime map updates, the total cost of ownership has also dropped dramatically.

To answer my own question… “If I lost it would I buy another one?”.. well the answer to that is now YES (again!)

I hate the clip that remains when you de-attached your sat nav. Surely its just a massive advertisement to any local thief’s in the area that there is a sat nav in the car.

I bought a GoLive Caravan&Camper in August 2013. This year it directed me twice in a road with low bridge, too low for my Camping Car wich height I had duly notified to the device. Sometimes it suggested a path very intricated, crossing several times the same way, practically a series of knots….! Th Camping Car rest areas, road works and traffic problems are treated quite well.

Hi Ian When I started to write my SAT NAV review, I asked if I could borrow one to compare the two and was refused point blank. They wouldn’t even answer my questions. I did find out that as you say it is not MAC compatible and it did have other limitations – it cannot pick up weight restricted data from the map database to stop big motorhomes going down weight restricted roads amongst other things. I have also had feedback that it has sent long units down roads that have turns that are too tight – especially in Spain & Portugal.

I have not had anyone reporting routing issues with the TomTom… mainly updating problems which now seem to have diminished as I’ve not had one for quite a few months.

Having used GPS units for over 20 years for flight navigation I ‘grew up’ with Garmin units which for aviation set the standard. The TomTom comes very close in functionality and performance.

I would definitely pursue the retailer for a suitable resolution with your issue.

I purchased a TomTom GoLive Camper version on recommendation by the Caravan Club in late 2102 at a cost of £400 from their recommended supplier. It was ok until just over a year later when it strarted freezing. The tom tom site says to reset if this happens which I did. It worked ok again for a while and then started freezing again. I continued resetting whenever this happened but it got to the stage where the device was basically useless. I contaced customer services and was told to reinstall the software from their website. This was accomplshed successfully and again it was ok for a while. Then it became useless again freezing at very unhelpful moments. Again I contaced customer services and was told the memory was corrupted – how? No response to how it may have been. I was then told to send it back and it woud be ‘repaired’ at a cost of £105. This for a relatively new device costing £400 which had been going wrong for some considerable time. I put this to customer services but have had no reply. I will not be purchasing a TomTom again and certailny will not be recommending them to anyone.

Hi Ian Sorry to hear you have had problems.

I know there were some issues with the upload software for a while which caused the unit to lock up while updating, I had quite a few problems with it, but since the release of a later version of the software I haven’t had any further issues.

I know from some GPS forums that TomTom customer service can be slow to respond so it would be worth trying again. As with any product or service you buy, the first place to contact should be the retailer that sold the unit as under the sale of goods act, it is with the retailer that you have a ‘contract’ with when they sold the product or service to you. Have a look at “Which?” magazine’s web site for very useful info about returning goods that are faulty.

I was unaware that The Caravan Club promoted the TomTom unit, I thought they preferred to promote the Snooper unit as it carried their club site database.

Hope you get a satisfactory resolution.

My Garmin 2595 recently routed me in my camping-car over a dangerous mountain road, e.g. it had no guard rail and was less than two car widths wide.

Does TomTom either warn you or have the option of avoiding dangerous mountain roads?

The TomTom will only route you on suitable roads for the size of motorhome or caravan set in the vehicle preferences. If you add the axle weights, it will also avoid any weight restricted roads or bridges.

Just done a bit of checking…. I can find the Europe Map on a lifetime update, but not the Europe Camper Map.

This was what I understood when I originally bought our “TomTom Go-Live Camper and Caravan” when I wrote the review. It did come with a free 12 months subscription to the ‘Go-Live’ service and all updates for speed cameras etc.

It may be worth double checking you have the ‘Europe Camper’ map on lifetime updates.

Just a quick update. I have spoken to Tomtom who tell me the product bought from them comes with lifetime map updates. Halfords advertise this model as including lifetime map updates as does one supplier via Amazon. Curry’s advise me no lifetime updates with their version and several Amazon suppliers also exclude the updates. It seems that there is more than one version on the market and this was the inference from Tomtom themselves. Obviously caution needed when doing price comparisons.

Great help to me as i am looking to replace my Snooper. Two quick points: 1 Does it allow you to “Avoid Toll Roads” (Essential for France) and 2 Is the Free lifetime map service included or are maps, like Cameras, an additional paid for service? Any info on these two items appreciated as TomTom website is less than clear on this.

Hi 1. Yes it does allow you to avoid toll roads. 2. The free lifetime map service does not apply to the Camper & Caravan edition (as far as I know). The “Go-Live” service is a yearly subscription (first year free) and includes all maps and speed camera updates etc.

One thing to note is the map has far more info in it as it includes weight restrictions, height restrictions, width restrictions and a host of other details that are not on the normal TomTom Europe maps (I think it’s the Commercial Vehicle version). Without this info, the unit could not plan routes specifically for caravans and motorhomes avoiding these restrictions.

PS… One of the best features of the ‘Go-Live” service is the live traffic information. It is very accurate and it obtains data not only from national services, but other ‘Go-Live’ users. So if another user a few miles ahead of you encounters slow moving traffic, that information is sent to TomTom and relayed back to other Go-Live users. The more users out there, the more accurate it becomes.

What a breath of fresh air; an honest review which is useful to the likes of me considering such a purchase. Thank you sincerely. I recently traded my TomTom GoLive 750 for a Snooper Ventura Caravan Club Edition and it was returned within 2 weeks. It was slow, inaccurate and not worthy of the premium price tag. Even the TMC aerial was an extra to be plugged in a trailed across the dash. As a result of your review, I have just placed an order through Amazon, and got it for £304 which I don’t think is too bad. Thanks again Carl

Thanks for this review. My TomTom 730 is no longer recognised by my computer so can’t update etc. TomTom help say new device is required as the internal hard drive will be failing. It’s very old so not unexpected! They are offering me a 20% discount on the £329.99 current rate which is fantastic. I was concerned about a few issues such as being able to create Itineries using Tyre but I’m told this is still possible although the device does not show up in Windows Expolorer as the old 730 did. This means I can’t simply drag and drop the Itineries into the appropriate place but must use the software to install them. I was also concerned that I could no longer create Favourites or POIs as coordinates but it seems this is still possible. The only thing I must now do is check my phone is compatible then I’ll buy. Again – thanks for a useful review. John

I had hesitations at first with the Go Live Camper & Caravan sat nav after first investigating the Snooper and finding out its limitations, I could not find a definitive answer to my questions at the time about the TomTom product. SO I took the plunge and found that I could do everything I wanted to and had done on my previous TomTom. Thats one of the reasons I did my little review to cover bits that other reviews didn’t!

My iPhone 5 and Sue’s iPhone 4 work OK if that is any help.

I’m in the process of writing an article about creating POI’s and custom routes using Google Maps – so you can look at the approved ‘approach’ recommended by one of the clubs and simply click on each of the road junctions in Google Maps and automatically create the same route to the site. When you upload the POI for the site to the TomTom it automatically adds the club’s approved approach. I’m using http://www.poieditor.com/ which is actually quite easy to use… eventually!

Get Started with GO Camper

Congratulations on your new TomTom GO Camper! This article will take you through the steps to set up your new device and get you moving. You will learn how to set up your Wi-Fi connection to check for software and map updates and get connected to TomTom services. You will see how to show Camper POIs. Getting to know your GO Camper

• Back Button
• Switch view button.
• Zoom buttons.
• Current location.
• Selected locations.
• Main Menu button.
• Map symbols.
• Traffic Information.
• Your route.
• Speed cameras on your route.

Setting a destination

• Open the main menu.
• Tap Search and enter an address, the name of a place or its type, for example, Restaurant. Address and city matches appear on the left, while places and points of interest appear on the right.
• Tap on a search result to select it.
• Tap on the Drive button to plan a route.

Saving your favourites

• Tap a map symbol or press and hold on the map to select a location.
• Tap the pop-up menu button.
• Tap Add to My Places and give the place a name.

All of your saved locations are shown as markers on the map. This allows you to quickly navigate using the map. See your favourite places on your phone or computer with Plan.TomTom.com .

Connecting your phone

• Connect your phone to get accurate traffic information and other TomTom Services*.  You can also connect for hands-free calls and smartphone messages.
• To set up the connection to your phone, open the main menu. Tap Settings , then tap Bluetooth® . Tap Add Phone .

Wir erklären zunächst die Besonderheiten eines Navigationsgerätes für Camper und stellen das TomTom Go Camper als aktuellen Vertreter dieser Produkt-Kategorie vor – das ist Teil 1 dieses Artikels. Und testen es anschließend in der Praxis – das ist Teil 2 dieses Artikels .

Fazit: Zuverlässiges Routing, aber umständliche POI-Suche

Nach über drei Jahren Dauertest beeindruckt das TomTom Go Camper durch seine Zuverlässigkeit und die häufigen Karten- und Radarwarner-Updates. Das Navigationsgerät schlägt uns morgens nach dem Start sofort vor die Route zur Arbeit zu berechnen und abends schlägt es automatisch nach dem Einschalten die Route nach Hause vor. Beide Vorschläge lassen sich sowohl per Sprachbefehl als auch per Fingerdruck sofort annehmen. Auch die Sprachsteuerung funktioniert die gesamte Zeit über zuverlässig. Dank der Echtzeitverkehrsinformationen kennen wir immer recht genau unsere voraussichtliche Ankunftszeit.

So bleiben als einzige Mankos die Leistungsschwäche des Prozessors, insbesondere nach dem Start des Navigationsgerätes, sowie die umständliche POI-Suche. Zwar hat ein Firmware-Update, das wir auf dem TomTom Go Camper installiert haben, bei der Performance eine Verbesserung bewirkt. Das TomTom ist jetzt schneller betriebsbereit. Doch mitunter dauert es immer noch eine gefühlte Ewigkeit, bis man das Navigationsgerät nach dem Losfahren benutzen kann.

Wir haben die Navigationsleistung des TomTom Go Camper ohne die spezifischen Camper-Funktionen in Deutschland, Frankreich und England getestet. Das PND hinterließ dabei durchwegs einen sehr guten Eindruck und lotste uns zuverlässig von Süddeutschland bis nach Süd-England und wieder zurück.

1. Produkt-Beschreibung: Navigationsgerät für Camper

1.1 Vorab: Das muss ein Navigationsgerät für Camper bieten: Bei einem speziell für Camper mit Wohnmobil oder Wohnwagen entwickelten Navigationsgerät kann der Fahrer die Abmessungen und das Gewicht seines Fahrzeugs beziehungsweise des Gespanns eintragen, damit das Wohnmobil oder das Gespann nicht an einer zu niedrigen Unterführung hängenbleibt oder sich in einer engen Kurve festfährt oder an einer zu starken Steigung scheitert. Außerdem sollte die Navigation Streckenabschnitte ausschließen, auf denen Wohnmobile oder Wohnwagen-Gespanne verboten sind. Die Navigation sollte zudem Überholverbote für Anhänger-Gespanne und die gewichtsabhängigen Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen berücksichtigen. In den POIs wiederum sollten natürlich Campingplätze enthalten sein.

1.2 Navigation für Auto, Wohnmobil und Wohnwagen-Gespann: Das TomTom Go Camper soll all das bieten: Neben der Camper-spezifischen Routenplanung und den passenden Points-of-Interest sollen zudem TomTom Road Trips und My Drive auf der Urlaubsfahrt helfen. Sie legen im Navi fest, ob Sie mit PKW, Wohnwagen oder Camper unterwegs sind – für letzteres stehen zwei unterschiedliche Größen zur Auswahl. Danach berechnet das Go Camper alle Routen unter Berücksichtigung von Größe und Gewicht Ihres Fahrzeugs oder Gespanns, verspricht TomTom. Diese Voreinstellung können Sie jederzeit ändern: Wenn Sie also nur mit dem PKW unterwegs sind, dann stellen Sie das einfach im TomTom Go Camper ein. Neben diesen Camper-spezifischen Funktionen stellt das Go Camper die gewohnten Funktionen wie Echtzeit-Verkehrsinformationen TomTom Traffic, Warnungen vor Geschwindigkeits-Überwachungen, Abbiege-Assistenten und Turn-by-Turn-Navigationsanweisungen sowie einen Nachtmodus zur Verfügung. Die POIs für die Campingplätze liefern ADAC und ANWB .

Die aus dem Internet heruntergeladenen Karten-, POI- und Software-Updates gelangen per WLAN auf das TomTom Go Camper. Sie müssen es also nicht mehr per Micro-USB-Kabel an den PC anschließen. Ein bequemes Over-The-Air-Update (OTA) wie bei Tesla gibt es bei TomTom aber nicht. 1.3 SIM-Karte integriert: Sie empfangen die Verkehrslage-Informationen sowie die Radarwarnungen während der Fahrt auch ohne gekoppeltes Smartphone, denn TomTom verbaut eine SIM-Karte in dem Gerät. Für die reine Navigation können Sie das Go Camper also völlig autark verwenden, ohne dass Sie ein Smartphone anschließen müssen.

1.4 Freisprecheinrichtung und Nachrichten vorlesen: Wie viele moderne PNDs (Personal Navigation Device) beschränkt sich das Go Camper aber nicht auf die reine Navigation, sondern bietet während der Fahrt Zusatzfunktionen für das via Bluetooth gekoppelte Smartphone. So können Sie das PND dann als Freisprechanlage für Ihr Smartphone verwenden und sich eingehende Nachrichten (SMS, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger) vorlesen lassen und deren Absender zurückrufen. Zudem unterstützt das TomTom Go Camper Siri und Google Now, nicht aber Alexa. Sie können also über die entsprechenden Sprachbefehle auf Ihr Smartphone zugreifen, sofern es mit dem Go Camper gekoppelt ist.

2 Tipps vor dem Start in den Urlaub

Tipp 1: Bevor Sie in den Camping-Urlaub aufbrechen, sollten Sie zu Hause alle Updates auf das TomTom Go Camper aufspielen, die zur Verfügung stehen. Damit Sie unterwegs aktuelles Kartenmaterial nutzen können.

Tipp 2: Schalten Sie die Radarwarn-Funktion in Deutschland und in allen anderen Ländern aus, in denen Radarwarner und Radarwarnapps verboten sind. Mehr dazu lesen Sie in dieser Meldung:   Radarwarner-Funktion – Tomtom empfiehlt abschalten .

1.5 Lebenslange Updates für Karten, Traffic und Radarwarner: Wie gewohnt verspricht TomTom (ebenso wie Konkurrent Garmin) lebenslange Karten-Updates. Wobei noch einmal betont werden muss, dass das „lebenslang“ nur so lange gilt, wie TomTom die Produktreihe unterstützt. Falls die Hardware irgendwann einmal nicht mehr ausreichend dimensioniert ist, um mit neuen Firmware-Versionen oder Karten-Updates zusammenarbeiten zu können, stellt TomTom den Support ein. Das passiert aber erfahrungsgemäß erst nach vielen Jahren. Dieses „lebenslang“ gilt außerdem auch für den Empfang von TomTom Traffic und für die Radarwarner-Informationen.

Im Juli 2020 hat Tomtom passend zur anrollenden Sommer-Urlaub-Campingwelle zusammen mit dem Campingplatzexperten ACSI eine Sammlung mit laut Hersteller mehr als 9.000 Sonderzielen für das TomTom GO Camper Navigationssystem ausgerollt, um damit Camper und Wohnwagenbesitzer bei der Planung ihrer nächsten Reise und unterwegs zu unterstützen. Das Update ist kostenlos und wird automatisch angezeigt, wenn das TomTom GO Camper in einem WLAN-Netz eingebucht ist. 1.6 TomTom Road Trips und My Drive: Mit TomTom Road Trips sollen Sie auf Ihrer Reise besonders attraktive Routen entdecken, und zwar ganz nach Ihren persönlichen Vorlieben. TomTom My Drive wiederum soll die Routenplanung am PC, Tablet oder Smartphone erleichtern. Diese Routenplanungen landen dann über die verbaute SIM-Karte im Go Camper. TomTom erweitert Road Trips im August 2018 zu einer Routen-Sharing-Plattform mit neuen Funktionen. Sie können dann Routenvorschläge mit anderen Nutzern teilen oder Routen bewerten.

1.7 Hardware: Der kapazitive Touchscreen fällt mit sechs Zoll (15 cm) Bildschirmdiagonale normal groß aus, das entspricht zum Beispiel der Größe der von uns getesteten Garmin Nüvicam. TomTom spendiert dem speziellen Camper-Navi also keinen größeren Bildschirm, obwohl in einem Wohnmobil-Cockpit ja vergleichsweise viel Platz vorhanden ist. 6 Zoll sind aber immerhin größer als die Bildschirme eines iPhone 8 Plus (5,5 Zoll), iPhone X (5,8 Zoll) oder Galaxy S9 (5,8 Zoll), aber bereits kleiner als bei einem Galaxy S9+ (6,2 Zoll) und deutlich kleiner als die fest verbauten Touchscreens moderner Infotainmentsysteme wie Audi MMI, BMW Connected Drive oder VW Discover Pro, sofern die jeweils teuerste Variante gewählt wird.

1.8 Preis und Verfügbarkeit

Die UVP für das TomTom Go Camper liegt bei 399 Euro. Auf Amazon bekommen Sie das Gerät für 338 Euro. Laut unserem Preisvergleich ist das ein fairer Preis für das Go Camper, eventuell zuzüglich Versandkosten.

1.9 Darum bringt TomTom das Go Camper, Konkurrenzumfeld und Alternativen

TomTom sucht die lukrative Nische. PNDs/Stand-Alone-Navigationsgeräte für PKWs sind schon seit einiger Zeit auf dem Rückzug, weil Autofahrer entweder Smartphones – mit kostenlosen Navigations-Apps wie Google Maps Navigation oder Here we Go – oder die immer besser werdenden und ab Werk fest verbauten Infotainmentsysteme mit großem Bildschirm zur Navigation verwenden. Oder das Smartphone mit den Infotainmentschnittstellen Apple Carplay oder Google Android Auto verbinden und dann mit der Apple Karten-App ( und ab iOS 12 auch mit Google Maps ) oder Google Maps navigieren. Allenfalls Navigationsgeräte mit einer Zusatzfunktion wie einer integrierten Dashcam und Auffahr-Warnung – Beispiel: die Garmin Nüvicam, die wir ausgiebig getestet haben – können sich gegen die meist kostenlose App-Navigation noch behaupten.

Andererseits boomt der Markt für Wohnmobile und Wohnwagen, deren Verkaufszahlen steigen. Doch genau für dieses Wachstumssegment gibt es kaum spezialisierte Smartphone-Apps, außer vielleicht die kostenpflichtige App Copilot Wohnmobil. Und gerade die beliebte und leistungsfähige Gratis-Navigation Google Maps bietet keinen speziellen „Camper“-Modus. Das gleiche Manko gilt auch für Apple Karten.

Obwohl moderne Navigationssysteme wie Audi MMi oder BMW Connected Drive+ oder VW Discover Pro oder Mercedes-Benz Comand Online mehrere Tausend Euro kosten, versagen diese teuren Systeme bei der Camper-Navigation meist völlig. Wie uns zum Beispiel BMW für dessen Infotainmentsystem Connected Drive bestätigte, ist es „in der Navigation nicht möglich, die Abmessungen eines Wohnwagens einzutragen und somit zu berücksichtigen.“ Ebenso bei Audi: “Nein, das MMI bietet keine Möglichkeit die Abmessungen eines Wohnanhängers einzutragen.” Genauso sieht es auch beim aktuellen Comand Online von Daimler aus: Auch hier sind alle schweren Limousinen und SUVs, die mit einem Wohnanhänger an der Anhängerkupplung in den Urlaub düsen, ohne spezielle Navigation unterwegs.

Allerdings hat Daimler das Problem erkannt und bietet in der neuen A-Klasse mit dem Infotainmentsystem MBUX eine Lösung an, wie uns Daimler auf Nachfrage erklärte: „Mit der neuen A-Klasse und der MBUX haben wir eine neue Funktion für Anhänger. Das heißt, sobald ein Anhänger an das Fahrzeug angeschlossen wird, erscheint im Navigations-Bildschirm neben der Routen-Einstellung ‚schnell‘, ‚kurz‘, ‚eco‘ auch die Einstellung ‚trailer‘. Somit wird die Routenkalkulation und Ankunftszeit für Anhängerbetrieb kalkuliert.“

Volkswagen wiederum teilte uns mit, dass das Navigationssystem Discover Pro Anhänger grundsätzlich berücksichtigen würde, allerdings keine Durchfahrtsbreiten. Wie auch immer sich das in der Praxis auswirken wird. In diese Lücke wollen die Niederländer mit dem TomTom Go Camper stoßen. TomTom ist mit dieser Strategie nicht allein, Erzrivale Garmin bietet bereits mehrere für Wohnmobile und Wohnwagen-Gespanne spezialisierte Navigationsgeräte an: das Garmin Camper 770 LMT mit 6,95 Zoll Bildschirm und das Garmin Camper 660LMT mit 6-Zoll-Display.

2. Test des TomTom Go Camper

2.1 Einfache Inbetriebnahme: Das TomTom Go Camper ist rasch in Betrieb genommen, alle Menü-Punkte sind selbsterklärend. Die Heimatadresse ist schnell eingetragen und die gewünschten Routenoptionen rasch ausgewählt. Auch die Koppelung mit dem Smartphone via Bluetooth klappt auf Anhieb. Das Navigationsgerät lässt sich gut ablesen und hat eine klare Menüstruktur.

2.1 Benutzerkonto und Online-Updates : Erstellen Sie unbedingt ein TomTom-Benutzerkonto. Sie brauchen es für My Drive. Und My Drive ist wichtig, siehe unten. Außerdem erhalten Sie nur dann Updates – wir bekamen das erste Update für die Radarwarnerdaten bereits einen Tag nach Inbetriebnahme. Tipp: Das TomTom Go Camper zeigt sich knausrig mit Informationen, falls die Erstellung eines Benutzerkontos mit der von Ihnen gewünschten Mailadresse scheitert. Haben Sie vielleicht vor Jahren schon mal ein TomTom-Benutzerkonto mit Ihrer Mailadresse erstellt und das vergessen? Dann können Sie jetzt natürlich kein weiteres Konto damit erstellen, TomTom sagt Ihnen das aber nicht explizit. Versuchen Sie in diesem Fall, das Passwort zurücksetzen zu lassen. Wenn Sie dann tatsächlich eine Mail zum Zurücksetzen bekommen, haben Sie Ihr Problem mit dem Erstellen des Benutzerkontos gelöst. Nur schade, dass TomTom auf diese Fehlerquelle nicht hinweist, sondern sich nur wortkarg weigert, mit der von Ihnen angegebenen Mailadresse ein Benutzerkonto anzulegen.

2.2 Bedienung : Der Touchscreen des Go Camper reagiert ausreichend schnell auf Fingereingaben, ist aber nicht so flott wie ein modernes Smartphone wie etwa das iPhone 8 oder das Samsung Galaxy S9. Bei der Performance können Navigationsgeräte Hightech-Smartphones nun einmal nicht das Wasser reichen. Das gilt auch für das Wechseln durch die Menüs, für die Eingabe von Adressen und für die Routenberechnung – das geht auf einem modernen Smartphone schneller über die Bühne. Übrigens sollte man die Fingereingaben mit Nachdruck vornehmen, einen flüchtigen Tipp erkennt das Go Camper nicht. Solide Sprachsteuerung: Die mit „Hallo TomTom“ gestartete Sprachsteuerung ist ebenfalls nicht so flott wie Siri oder Google Now. Zudem können Sie nicht frei sprechen, wie Ihnen der Schnabel gewachsen ist, sondern müssen die vorgegebenen Befehle verwenden. Insgesamt funktioniert die Sprachsteuerung aber zuverlässig und ist eine wichtige Alternative zur Fingerbedienung.

Tipp: Geduld mit Sprachsteuerung während des Hochfahrens

Nach dem Einschalten beziehungsweise Hochfahren reagiert das TomTom Go Camper bekanntlich sehr, sehr langsam. Die recht zuverlässig funktionierende Sprachsteuerung steht aber auch während dieser „Warm-up“-Phase zur Verfügung – Sie müssen sich nur in Geduld üben.

Sagen Sie zunächst den Weckruf „Hallo TomTom“ und warten Sie dann. Es kann durchaus etliche Sekunden dauern, bis sich der Bildschirm des TomTom abdunkelt und die Sprachsteuerung sich meldet. Warten Sie dann unbedingt, bis der Signalton ertönt – erst danach versteht das TomTom Ihren Sprachbefehl.

Sagen Sie jetzt zum Beispiel „Fahre zur Heimatadresse“. Und dann dauert es wieder eine Zeitlang, bis das TomTom die Route zur Heimatadresse endlich einblendet.

Doch letztendlich funktioniert das Ganze und das TomTom führt unseren Sprachbefehl auch während der langatmigen Hochfahrphase korrekt aus. Wichtig ist nur, dass Sie wirklich erst nach dem Signalton sprechen und dem TomTom genügend Zeit geben, sich zu sortieren. Bei unserer gestrigen Testfahrt brauchte das TomTom ab dem Moment, an dem wir es mit Strom versorgten und es aus dem Schlafmodus aufwachte bis zum fertig gestarteten Routing zirka drei bis vier Minuten.

In der Ruhe liegt also die Kraft. Wohlgemerkt: Diese langsame und ziemlich nervige Reaktion des TomTom gilt vor allem für die Startphase. Ist das TomTom einmal in Betrieb, dann reagiert es deutlich schneller.

Langsames Hochfahren: Das TomTom Go Camper braucht relativ lange, bis es aus dem Ruhemodus wieder betriebsbereit hochfährt, wenn man sein Stromkabel mit der 12-Volt-Steckdose des Autos verbindet. In diesen Ruhemodus geht es automatisch, sobald man es von der Stromversorgung trennt. Konkret bedeutet das: Sobald Sie das Go Camper mit der Stromversorgung verbinden, sollten Sie mindestens eine Minute warten, bis Sie Eingaben vornehmen. Schnell ins Auto springen, TomTom einstecken und sofort losnavigieren geht definitiv nicht. Ein Firmware-Update von Anfang 2019, das wir auf dem TomTom Go Camper installiert haben, hat hier aber eine positive Änderung bewirkt. Das TomTom ist jetzt spürbar schneller betriebsbereit und nervt deutlich weniger mit Zwangspausen.

Falls Sie es also ganz eilig haben, dann nehmen Sie besser Google Maps auf dem Smartphone. Speziell auf einem Camper-Navi, das ja vor allem für den Urlaub gedacht ist, sollte diese Verzögerung aber kein Problem darstellen. Im Urlaub hat man in der Regel morgens ja doch die nötige Zeit, um das Hochfahren des Navigationsgeräts abwarten zu können. Wer dagegen jeden Tag beruflich und unter Zeitdruck damit pendeln muss, sieht die lange Hochfahrzeit vermutlich weniger entspannt.

2.3 Sehr genaues Routing und zuverlässige Karten : Das TomTom Go Camper stellt die Route übersichtlich dar. Mit einem Fingertipp können Sie zu einer Übersichtskarte für die gesamte Route wechseln und wieder zurück gehen. Die Stau-Lage und POIs wie Parkplätze oder Tankstellen zeigt das Navi rechts aber ziemlich gedrängt an. Mit einem kurzen Fingertipp auf diese Leiste verschaffen Sie sich etwas mehr Übersicht. Ein weiterer Fingertipp auf eines der Icons zeigt Details dazu an. Sie sehen dann also beispielsweise, wo genau der Stau auftritt oder um welches besondere Ereignis – Tiere oder Menschen auf der Fahrbahn etc. – es sich handelt.

Auf einer über 3000 Kilometer langen Fahrt nach England stellte das TomTom Go Camper seine sehr guten Routing-Fähigkeiten unter Beweis. Das Navigationsgerät lotste uns exakt zu unseren Zielen und führte uns dabei über teilweise sehr idyllische, aber immer noch geteerte Straßen, die bei uns die Einstufung Forstwege oder landwirtschaftliche Straßen bekommen würden. Das Kartenmaterial zeigte keinerlei Fehler, lediglich zwei Tempolimits in Baustellen wurden nicht exakt angezeigt. Mit dem Kartenmaterial und der Route gab es auf der langen Reise keinerlei Probleme.

Gut: Das Go Camper zählt die Entfernung zum Stau-Ende runter, sobald man sich diesem nähert. Sie wissen dann also ziemlich genau, wann Sie auf die Bremse treten sollen. Das hilft vor allem vor Kurven und an schlecht einsehbaren Streckenabschnitten.

Zu einer bestehenden Route lassen sich jederzeit Zwischenstopps hinzufügen. Das klappt auch mit mehreren nachträglich hinzugefügten Zwischenstopps ohne Probleme. Das Routing zu den nachträglich eingefügten Zwischenzielen und das anschließende Routing zum finalen Ziel funktionierte auf Anhieb.

Tankstellen und Rastplätze zeigte uns das TomTom zuverlässig an. Auch vor Baustellen warnte es in der Regel ziemlich gut.

Das Go Camper arbeitete auf der gesamten 3000-Kilometer-Route zuverlässig und absturzfrei. Kurios: Das TomTom Go Camper navigiert in der Regel sehr zuverlässig, selbst auf kleinen Nebenstraßen. Doch ausgerechnet auf auf dem Mittleren Ring in München lieferte es zwei schwere Fehler. Einmal wollte es uns grundlos eine 360-Grad-Schleife fahren lassen, ein anderes Mal im schon länger bestehenden Luise-Kiesselbach-Tunnel rechts abbiegen lassen, wo überhaupt keine Ausfahrt war.

TomTom bekommt häufige und unkomplizierte Karten-Updates : Für das Kartenmaterial und auch für die Radarwarnereinträge bekommen wir nahezu jede Woche Aktualisierungen, die via WLAN zuverlässig und unkompliziert auf unser Testgerät kommen. Top!

Tipp: Vor einer längeren Reise sollten Sie unbedingt ein Update durchführen, damit alle Karten und POI-Informationen sowie die Radarwarnungen auf dem aktuellen Stand sind.

Test in Österreich: Bei einem mehrtägigen Test in Österreich bewies das TomTom Go Camper erneut seine guten Lotsen-Qualitäten. Allerdings mit einer wichtigen Einschränkung: Es kannte eine wichtige Voll-Sperrung nicht, die für Urlauber, die aus München Richtung Großglockner wollen, ärgerlich und zeitraubend ist. Diese Sperre betrifft also ziemlich viele deutsche Urlauber, umso bedauerlicher ist, dass das TomTom einen direkt in die Sperrung fahren lässt und man dadurch rund 45 Minuten verliert.

Daneben kannte das TomTom – dessen Kartenmaterial wir unmittelbar vor dem Losfahren aktualisiert hatten – auch noch zwei weitere kleinere Sperrungen nicht, aber diese waren lokaler Natur und wurden von den örtlichen Behörden vermutlich einfach nicht weitergemeldet. Dafür kann TomTom nichts.

Aktive Radarwarner sind in Österreich verboten, deshalb haben wir diese Funktion nicht getestet. Allerdings wissen wir aus sicherer Quelle, dass das TomTom in Österreich sehr zuverlässig vor den häufigen Geschwindigkeitskontrollen warnt. Und zwar sowohl vor fest installierten Messstellen als auch vor mobilen Kontrollen durch die Polizei.

TomTom lotst meist korrekt, aber ein fieser Schnitzer

Das TomTom Go Camper lotste im Langzeittest erfolgreich durch Süddeutschland, Österreich, Schweiz und Südfrankreich und bewährte sich bei vielen Fahrten auf auch kleineren Straßen in der Provence. Als besonders praktisch erwies sich wieder einmal der Abbiege- und Spurassistent sowie die (meist korrekte) Anzeige der jeweils gültigen Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung. Die TomTom-Traffic-Echtzeitverkehrslagedaten erwiesen sich in mindestens einem Fall gegenüber TMC deutlich überlegen und halfen einen längeren Stau zu umfahren.

Allerdings leistete sich das Go Camper auf der Autobahn A7 Richtung Avignon einen bösen und unverständlichen Schnitzer. Die Sprachanweisung des TomTom sagte uns klar und deutlich, dass wir rechts von der A7 abbiegen sollten. Doch ein Blick auf das Schild über der Autobahn zeigte uns, dass es geradeaus nach Avignon weitergeht. Wir schauten also auf den Bildschirm des TomTom Go Camper und sahen, dass der Spurassistent des Go Camper ganz klar das (korrekte) Weiterfahren auf der A7 anzeigte. Doch zeitgleich forderte uns die Sprachausgabe erneut dazu auf rechts von der Autobahn abzufahren. Bildschirmanzeige und (die fehlerhafte) Sprachanweisung des TomTom widersprachen sich also!

2.4 Exakte Verkehrslageinformationen von TomTom Traffic: Dank der fortlaufend aktualisierten Echtzeit-Verkehrsinformationen von TomTom Traffic sagt uns das PND die Ankunftszeit ziemlich exakt voraus. Zu jedem Stau-Ereignis sehen wir die dadurch voraussichtlich verursachte Verzögerung. Darauf kann man sich recht gut verlassen, wobei es aber auch Ausnahmen gibt, siehe weiter unten. Das TomTom ermittelt automatisch in Abhängigkeit von der aktuellen Verkehrslage die schnellste Route (wenn Sie diese Option voreingestellt haben). Das führt dazu, dass Sie das identische Ziel an unterschiedlichen Tagen auf unterschiedlichen Wegen erreichen.

Die Verkehrslagedaten waren auf unserer 3000-Kilometer-Tour durch Deutschland, Frankreich und England durchgehend und sehr genau vorhanden.

Übrigens: Die “Verkehrslage” auf Parkplätzen erfasst das TomTom nicht. Falls Sie also bereits auf dem Parkplatz im Stau stehen, dann berücksichtigt das das TomTom nicht bei der Anzeige der voraussichtlichen Ankunftszeit.

TomTom Traffic ist aber nicht perfekt: Das wesentliche Verkaufsargument für TomTom-PNDs sind die in der Regel recht genauen Verkehrslage-Echtzeitinformationen. Doch diese sind nicht perfekt. Am 17. August 2018 gegen 18.45 Uhr hörten wir im Radio eine Verkehrsdurchsage, die uns davor warnte, dass sich kurz vor uns ein durch einen Unfall verursachter Stau befinden würde. Die linke Fahrbahnspur sei gesperrt, wir würden zirka 20 Minuten im Stau stehen. Kurz darauf nähern wir uns einer Autobahn-Abfahrt: Hier könnten wir also von der Autobahn runter und den Stau bequem umfahren, zumal wir die Gegend kennen. Doch das TomTom zeigt uns an: Freie Fahrt, kein Stau voraus. Wem sollten wir vertrauen: Den als zeitlich eher ungenau geltenden und in größeren zeitlichen Abständen ausgestrahlten Verkehrswarnungen im Radio oder den alle Minuten aktualisierten TomTom-Traffic-Informationen? Wir machten den Test und fuhren auf der Autobahn weiter: Wir vertrauten also TomTom und ignorierten das gute alte Radio. Und es klingt wie Satire: Kaum waren wir an der Abfahrt vorbei, blendete das TomTom sofort den Stau ein. In dem wir kaum eine Minute später standen, für rund 20 Minuten, wie im Radio angekündigt. Hätten wir kein modernes Navigationsgerät besessen, sondern uns nur auf die Verkehrsinformationen im Radio verlassen, wären wir da längst am Ziel gewesen. Offensichtlich hatte es eine ungünstige zeitliche Überschneidung gegeben. Tatsächlich war das aber das erste und bisher einzige derartige Versagen auf rund 4000 gefahrenen Test-Kilometern mit dem TomTom Go Camper.

2.5 Sprachanweisungen in der richtigen Menge: Die Sprachanweisungen sind wohl dosiert und nerven nicht, es gibt sie immer in ausreichender Menge. Nur in ein bis zwei Fällen wäre eine etwas genauere Formulierung wünschenswert gewesen: Das Navigationsgerät sagte „bleiben Sie rechts“, tatsächlich mussten wir aber rechts abbiegen.

2.6 POI-Suche mit Licht und Schatten: Bei der POI-Suche zeigt das TomTom Go Camper deutliche Schwächen. So kennt es zum Beispiel das berühmte Rennsport-Spektakel Festival of Speed (FoS) im englischen Goodwood nicht, wenn man diesen Begriff direkt in das Suchfeld eingibt. Das kann Google Maps besser: Die Gratis-Navigations-App von Google findet das FoS auf Anhieb und startet sofort die Navigation.

Sie finden aber auch das FoS in Goodwood auf dem TomTom-PND, sofern Sie wissen, wie Sie suchen müssen. Zunächst einmal ist die Such-Maske auf dem Go Camper folgendermaßen aufgebaut: * Oberer Teil: Eingabefeld * Linker Teil: Zielvorschläge aufgrund der Adresseingabe * Rechter Teil: Gibt man einen Namen im Eingabefeld ein, erhält man Suchergebnisse für POIs, die diesen Namen enthalten (im ersten Schritt werden dann die POIs angezeigt, die im Kartenmaterial hinterlegt sind).

Geben Sie nun den gesuchten Begriff in das Eingabefeld ein. Vielleicht werden Sie unter den rechts angezeigten POIs bereits fündig und können diesen direkt auswählen.   Möglicherweise reichen die angezeigten Ergebnisse aber nicht aus. Dann können Sie die „Places online Suchen“ zu Hilfe nehmen und dort den Suchbegriff eingeben. Das ist zum Beispiel dann erforderlich, wenn es sich nicht um einen POI, sondern um einen Event handelt, den Sie suchen. Beispielsweise eben das Festival of Speed in Goodwood.   Wichtig ist in diesem Zusammenhang, dass Sie die Suche nicht geografisch einschränken und der Suchbereich die gesamte Karte abdeckt (das kann man im „Suche“-Menü oben rechts auswählen mit dem kleinen Kartensymbol) und in der Onlinesuche mit „Places“ „In Ort oder Stadt“ suchen (nicht „in der Nähe“).

Doch selbst falls Sie mit der obigen Anleitung das gesuchte POI finden, so bleibt die POI-Suche im TomTom doch umständlich und ist nicht mehr zeitgemäß. Man muss immer genau wissen, wie das Ziel heißt, nach dem man sucht, andernfalls findet das Go Camper kein Ziel. Ein weiteres Beispiel: Sie wissen, dass sich in der Nähe der französischen Stadt Reims eine alte Formel-1-Rennstrecke befindet und geben „Reims Rennstrecke“ im TomTom ein. Fehlanzeige: Das TomTom zeigt kein Ziel an. Auch die Places-Suche des TomTom hilft da nicht weiter. Gibt man „Reims Rennstrecke“ dagegen bei Google Maps ein, erscheint sofort das Ziel und man kann mit Google Maps los navigieren. Erst wenn man auf dem TomTom den Begriff „Circuit de Reims-Gueux Reims“ eingibt, findet das Go Camper das Ziel und kann dorthin sicher navigieren.

Dieses Problem kennen wir auch von anderen Navigationsgeräten, die nicht auf die Google-Suche zugreifen können: Viele Sehenswürdigkeiten lassen sich direkt auf dem PND nicht finden.

Nutzen Sie Google Maps für die POI-Suche: Aber selbst wenn Sie derart das gesuchte POI finden, ist die Suche auf dem PND doch deutlich umständlicher als mit Google Maps. Zumal die Unterscheidung zwischen Event und POI für den Benutzer die Suche nicht gerade leichter macht. Während Sie bei Google Maps einfach nur ein paar Schlagworte eingeben können und dann sofort die Navigation starten können, müssen Sie beim TomTom immer in Kategorien denken und die korrekten Namen/Adressen der Ziele eingeben. Das ist nicht nur umständlich und zeitraubend, sondern führt oft auch zu Frustration, wenn man das gewünschte Ziel, von dem man weiß, dass es existiert, nicht findet. Unser Tipp: Ermitteln Sie auf dem Smartphones mit Google Maps die korrekte Adresse für das gesuchte POI. Und geben Sie diese Adresse dann im TomTom ein.

2.7 Radarwarner: Das TomTom Go Camper warnt vor Verkehrsüberwachungskameras wie zum Beispiel “Radarfallen”. Das klappt auch im Ausland: In England warnte uns das Go Camper zuverlässig vor den doch recht zahlreichen Überwachungskameras. In Frankreich sind Radarwarner dagegen verboten. Das TomTom blendet dort das entsprechende Icon aus und zeigte uns auch keinerlei Radarfallen an.

2.8 My-Drive-App und -Web-Portal: Das TomTom Go Camper bietet aber eine leistungsfähigere Alternative zur POI-Suche auf dem Navi: Die My-Drive-App auf dem Smartphone beziehungsweise das My-Drive-Portal im Browser. Auch wenn es merkwürdig klingt: Suchen Sie nach POIs besser in der App oder noch besser auf dem PC (wegen der besseren Übersicht) und senden Sie das ermittelte Ziel dann an das Go Camper, anstatt direkt auf dem PND nach dem POI zu suchen. Denn die My-Drive-App kann auf die Google-Suche zugreifen und findet deshalb jedes gewünschte POI. Zur Übertragung von der App zum Go Camper ist keine direkte Bluetooth-Verbindung erforderlich, sondern das geht ruckzuck über die TomTom-Server. Überhaupt eignet sich das übersichtliche Webportal bestens für die Erstellung komplexer Routen. Wenn Sie die Route dann bequem im Browser erstellt haben, speichern Sie diese unter einem aussagekräftigen Namen ab und übertragen sie auf das TomTom Go Camper.

Unkompliziert und zuverlässig funktioniert die Übertragung eines mit My Drive auf der App oder am PC ermittelten Navigationsziels auf das PND. Wir schickten es in unserer Wohnung vom Smartphone ab, gingen dann zum Auto, schlossen das PND an die Stromversorgung an und binnen weniger Sekunden erschien am oberen Bildschirmrand ein Hinweis auf das eingetroffene Navigationsziel, das wir sofort ansteuern konnten.

Nach fast einem Jahr Dauertest beeindruckt das TomTom Go Camper durch seine Zuverlässigkeit und die häufigen Karten- und Radarwarner-Updates. Das Navigationsgerät schlägt uns morgens nach dem Start sofort vor die Route zur Arbeit zu berechnen und abends schlägt es automatisch nach dem Einschalten die Route nach Hause vor. Beide Vorschläge lassen sich sowohl per Sprachbefehl als auch per Fingerdruck sofort annehmen. Auch die Sprachsteuerung funktioniert die gesamte Zeit über zuverlässig. Dank der Echtzeitverkehrsinformationen kennen wir immer recht genau unsere voraussichtliche Ankunftszeit.

So bleiben als einzige Mankos die Leistungsschwäche des Prozessors, insbesondere nach dem Start des Navigationsgerätes, sowie die umständliche POI-Suche. Das letzte Firmware-Update, das wir auf dem TomTom Go Camper installiert haben, scheint aber zumindest bei der Performance eine Verbesserung zu bewirken. Das TomTom ist jetzt spürbar schneller betriebsbereit.

TomTom Go Camper

Zomervakantie 2020; Voor veel Nederlanders ziet de zomervakantie van dit jaar er noodgedwongen nét even wat anders uit dan andere jaren. Geen vliegreis met luxe hotel aan een zonnige costa, maar ultiem avonturieren met eigen vervoer. Is dit de ideale TomTom voor vakanties met de camper of caravan?

TomTom is al vele jaren toonaangevend in navigatieland. Waar veel Nederlanders gebruik maken van smartphone -apps blijf ik een groot voorstander van een navigatiesysteem die je gewoon ‘ouderwets’ op de voorruit plakt.

GadgetGear test de TomTom GO Camper.

Daar is hij dan. De TomTom GO Camper. Relevanter dan ooit, nu hordes mensen er voor kiezen om dit jaar geen dure vliegreis te boeken. Ze kiezen momenteel liever voor een heerlijke (road)trip in de camper of met de caravan aan de trekhaak.

Zoals jullie natuurlijk verwachten wordt deze TomTom afgeleverd met alles wat je nodig hebt om deze TomTom in jouw camper te plaatsen en gebruiken. Met een scherm van 6 inch is het beeldscherm bijzonder goed leesbaar. Dit is een groot voordeel omdat bij sommige campers de voorruit best wel een einde van de bestuurder vandaan zit. Het schem heeft een resolutie van 800×480 pixels. Oke, het is geen HD scherm met kraakheldere beelden, maar voor de navigatie van A- naar B is dit ruim voldoende. We waren toch al niet van plan om de vakantiefoto’s op de TomTom langs te laten komen.

Zodra wij de TomTom aanzetten voor zijn eerste gebruik kom je direct in de installatiewizard zoals wij die kennen van TomTom. Lekker overzichtelijk, geen poespas, heerlijk doeltreffend. Tijdens de wizard vraagt onze TomTom wat ons gebruikelijke vervoer is. Natuurlijk kan je aangeven dat je met de camper op pad gaat. Maar ook voor dagelijks gebruik in een personenauto is een speciale modus op deze TomTom geprogrammeerd.

Als je klaar bent met de wizard, ongeveer 10 minuutjes later, heeft TomTom je inmiddels voorzien in een TomTom account en heb je de app geïnstalleerd op je telefoon. Kinderlijk eenvoudig leidt TomTom je door deze stappen. Ook het koppelen van de TomTom, de TomTom account en de TomTom app is een fluitje van een cent.

En dan is het tijd om aan te geven welke maps je wil installeren. Wij blijven vaak binnen de grenzen van het geografische Europa en kiezen dus vanzelfsprekend voor de Europa-Camper optie. Een updaten van nét geen 10GB. Het blijkt dat deze TomTom GO Camper is voorzien van een geheugen van ongeveer 15GB. Dit betekend dat je dus wél de mogelijkheid hebt om de maps van alle landen over de gehele wereld tot je beschikking hebt, echter, je zult deze niet allemaal tegelijkertijd op de TomTom weggeschreven krijgen. Ben je dus heel erg fanatiek en voornemens zijn een groter gedeelte van de globe te gaan doorkruisen; dan zal je ergens onderweg even de maps op je TomTom moeten vervangen.

Ook dit is een fluitje van een cent. Je hebt binnen no-time de landen die je niet meer nodig hebt van je TomTom GO Camper verwijdert, en je hebt in dezelfde mum van tijd jouw nieuwe benodigde maps geselecteerd. Geselecteerd ja, het initiëren van de update is kinderspel. Het wachten tot jouw cirkeldiagram aangeeft dat hij voor 100% geïnstalleerd is is wél een tijdrovend klusje. Met de maps voor Europa is de TomTom aangesloten op mijn thuisnetwerk (100Mbit) zo’n 5 uur bezig. Doe je dit onderweg? Zorg dan dat je geen haast hebt en een stevige internetverbinding.

Eenmaal geïnstalleerd is deze TomTom Go Camper klaar voor gebruik. En waar de vorige versie van deze TomTom nog wel een wou vastlopen bij het berekenen van een route heeft deze GO Camper mij menig maal naar het einde van de wereld gedirigeerd, zonder enige problemen!

Bevestiging

Bij deze TomTom kan je natuurlijk de Go Camper zoals we allemaal kennen tegen je voorruit plakken. Als toevoeging krijg je een kunststof base meegeleverd die je elders op je dashboard kan plakken. Op deze plaat kan je dan weer de zuignap (180 graden gedraaid) bevestigen zodat je hem overal kan bevestigen waar je wenst. De bevestiging is lekker stevig en, zeker bij een max. snelheid van 100 kilometer per uur trillingsvrij.

Connectiviteit

Live updates.

Je betaald er wat voor, maar de jongens bij TomTom voorzien je bij deze TomTom GO Camper van levenslange updates op de wereldwijde kaarten. Dus ook voor de komende jaren heb je de garantie op recente kaarten en nooit meer verkeerd rijden.

Verkeersinfo

Door middel van een bluetooth verbinding met jouw smartphone krijgt deze GO Camper live alle verkeersinfo door. Flitspalen, wegafsluitingen en verkeersopstoppingen, allemaal worden ze op jouw route weergegeven. Waar nodig maant deze TomTom GO camper om langzamer te rijden en/of om te rijden. Oh ja, dit ook levenslang natuurlijk!

Eenmaal verbonden met jouw telefoon krijgt de TomTom Go Camper ook jouw oproepen, mails en whatsapp -berichten door. Je kan handsfree bellen en jouw geschreven berichten kunnen handig en veilig aan je worden voorgelezen. Eyes on the road people!

Het gebruik van de TomTom app voldoet aan alle verwachtingen. Je kunt gemakkelijk je bestemming opzoeken en deze naar je navigatiesysteem versturen, waarna de TomTom GO Camper jou automatisch is de juiste richting dirigeert. Daarnaast is het mogelijk om de TomTom te voorzien van regelmatig gebruikte plaatsen. Met een snelkeuze voor thuis, werk, camping of welk andere bestemming ook hoef je de plaatsen die je vaker aandoet nooit meer op te zoeken aan de hand van een adres.

Tja. Dit is natuurlijk een beetje een open deur, maar de kaarten van TomTom zijn al jaren dik op orde. Het overgrote deel van de wegen (zeker die toegankelijk met een camper) zijn jouw TomTom GO Camper bekend. De route is correct en overzichtelijk.

Routes Camper

De speciale camper-modus van deze TomTom zorgt ervoor dat je allemaal handige voorwaarden aan jouw TomTom-routeberekening kan toevoegen. Max. doorrijdhoogte, max. snelheid, allemaal zijn ze in te stellen en moet je van A- naar B, dan past deze TomTom die toe op de te rijden route. Nooit meer een zandweggetje over een steile bergpas. En nooit meer zweten of jouw geliefde sleurhut wel onder een brug door past.

Natuurlijk is de TomTom voorzien van ontelbare POI’s die op jouw route worden worden weergegeven. Wil je weten waar overnachtingsplekken zijn op jouw route? Wil je weten hoe ver het volgende tankstation nog verder is? Je hoeft het de TomTom GO Camper eigenlijk niet eens te vragen. Deze informatie wordt standaard weergegeven op jouw te rijden route.

Daarnaast is er zeer recent een update uitgebracht. TomTom en ACSI hebben aangekondigd dat er meer dan 9.000 points of interest (POI’s)* in heel Europa zijn toegevoegd aan de nieuwste update van de TomTom GO Camper. Dit betekent dat het voor consumenten nog makkelijker wordt om bijzondere bestemmingen te vinden via het navigatiesysteem. Voor elke POI heeft ACSI een korte beschrijving toegevoegd inclusief bijzonderheden, telefoonnummer en de URL van de camping op  EuroCampings.eu . Daar vinden kampeerders meer informatie zoals prijzen, openingstijden, beoordelingen van de ASCI-community of details over internet, sanitaire voorzieningen en wasgelegenheden.

*Er zijn in totaal 9.775 ACSI POI’s toegevoegd verdeeld in twee categorieën: ACSI Campings POI’s (6.113) en ACSI CampingCard POI’s (3.662). De POI’s van ASCI Campings omvatten campings in heel Europa, terwijl de POI’s van ACSI CampingCard campings speciale aanbiedingen omvatten en kortingen bieden aan ACSI CampingCard-houders. In Nederland zijn er 1.111 POI’s toegevoegd.

Laat jij die vliegreis ook schieten dit jaar? Kies jij voor een vakantie met de caravan of camper? Dan gaat deze TomTom Go Camper jouw heel, heel, heel erg gelukkig maken.

Oh ja. Doe je updates als je s’middags aan een biertje zit. Niet in de ochtend tijdens jouw pre-drive koffie… 😉

TomTom Go Camper - Campernavigatie - Wereld kopen

Vroeger kon men vragen om alle campings op de route weer te geven , alsook in een opgegeven plaats. is dit nog steeds het geval?

Mij stuurde de tomtom camper over een col, die gemarkeerd was met een “rode stippellijn” bleek bij nazicht, die zelfs niet geschikt was om kleine personen auto’s elkaar te laten kruisen. De pret die wij gehad hebben! Om dit in de toekomst te vermijden stelden wij in dat we met een zware camper +3.5t reden, werden dan meermaals door een verboden +3.5t zone getuurd. Zulke zaken hebben wij met onze vorige camper gps “zoomer 680” nooit meegemaakt.

Voor de caravan navigatie is het een absolute NO GO. De navigatie brengt j gemakkelijk in de problemen. Nu verschillende keren ondervonden.

Heeft deze navigatie ook kaarten van de landen in Midden-Amerika? Wij gaan met de camper naar Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Belize, Honduras, Elsalvador en Mexico.

Bij gebruik liep het de derde keer grondig mis. De GPS liet ons met een 3500kg camper een héél steil en nauw straatje inrijden tot op het einde doodloopt. We hebben doodsangsten doorstaan om er terug uit te kunnen. Er stond wel geen bord aan het straatje maar van deze GPS had ik wel verwacht dat er ergens een alarmbelletje ging afgaan. Het straatje was absoluut niet geschikt voor onze camper. Mijn vertrouwen in deze GPS is ver zoek. Koop maar een gewone GPS

Tomtom-Navi "Go Camper Go" im Test : Tomtom punktet mit den schnellen Wegen

Tomtoms Campernavi findet den schnellsten Weg, führt schwere Fahrzeuge aber nicht immer optimal ans Ziel. Durch kleinere Mängeln bietet das Modell Go Camper ein dennoch passables Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis.

Nach vier Jahren Abstinenz im Segment der reisemobilspezifischen Navigation führt Tomtom mit dem Go Camper wieder ein für Reisemobile optimiertes Navigationsgerät im Programm. Wir sind einige Monate lang mit dem mobilen Navi gefahren und haben es im In- und Ausland getestet.

Mitgeliefert wird ein Halter mit Saugnapf, an dem das Gerät magnetisch haftet. Mit einem leichten Ruck hat man den sechs Zoll großen Bildschirm in der Hand und kann das Fahrtziel bequem eintippen. Das Kabel bleibt in der Halterung eingesteckt. Besonders praktisch ist das in Fahrzeugen mit geräumigem Cockpit, in denen das Gerät nicht in Griffweite platziert werden kann.

Wie von Tomtom gewohnt, funktioniert die Verkehrserkennung auch beim Go Camper hervorragend. Eine integrierte Sim-Karte ruft Bewegungsdaten anderer Fahrzeuge in Echtzeit ab. Darunter Pkws bestimmter Premiummarken sowie über Smartphones freigegebene Bewegungsprofile.

Dadurch wird ein Stau nicht nur rechtzeitig (und zuverlässiger als über TMC) erkannt, sondern auf dem Bildschirm auch nahezu metergenaudargestellt (rot für stehenden Verkehr, gelb für zähfließend). Angebotene Alternativrouten sind jedoch mitunter unrealistisch und nur vermeintlich präzise.So werden teilweise Umfahrungen mit 40 Sekunden Zeitersparnis angeboten.

Straßensperrungen nicht immer erkannt

Ein Algorithmus soll anhand der Bewegungsprofile Straßensperrungen erkennen, selbst wenn diese von den Behörden nicht gemeldet wurden. Während unserer Fahrten hatte das in zwei Fällen nicht funktioniert. Einmal in der Stuttgarter Innenstadt, wo wir ohne Ortskenntnis immer wieder zum gesperrten Abschnitt geleitet worden wären. Ein anderes Mal erkannte das Go Camper eine gesperrte Auffahrt aufder Gotthard-Autobahn, kurz vor dem gleichnamigen Tunnel, nicht. Uns blieb nur die Fahrt über den Pass, welche zumindest durch die traumhafte Aussicht entschädigte.

Aber nicht immer können Fehler in der Routenführung dem Gerät selbst angelastet werden, da sie teilweise auf lückenhaftes Kartenmaterial zurückzuführen sind. So werden straßenbauliche Veränderungen nicht immer umgehend an die Kartenhersteller gemeldet.

Campingplätze lassen sich aus der vorinstallierten Datenbank auswählen (die promobil -Stellplatzdaten lassen sich im OV2-Format nachträglich aufspielen). Bei der Anfahrt zum Stellplatz Lido Beach in Novate Mezzola wollte uns das Gerät jedoch trotz hinterlegter Fahrzeughöhe unter einer viel zu niedrigen Bahnunterführung hindurchführen. Der nur 50 Meter entfernte offizielle Anfahrtsweg wurde ignoriert. Auf ein weiteres Manko machten auch bereits einige Leser aufmerksam: Wählt man die Einstellung „Reisemobil schwer“, verschwindet die Option „Autobahn vermeiden“ aus den Routeneinstellungen. Ärgerlich für alle, die auch mal gemütlich über Bundes- und Landstraßen tingeln möchten. Wenig durchdacht sind zudem die Parkplatzvorschläge, denn auch im Reisemobilmodus empfiehlt das Navigationsgerät Tiefgaragen und Parkhäuser.

Hilfreich bei der Tourenplanung ist das browserbasierte Tool mydrive. Darin lassen sich Routen mit mehreren Etappen auf Computer oder Tablet planen und anschließend via Wifi auf das Navigationsgerät übertragen. Die Preisempfehlung liegt bei knapp 400 Euro, wobei das Go Camper bei manchen Händlern bereits günstiger zu haben ist.

Wer schnell ans Ziel möchte, trifft mit dem Tomtom Go Camper eine gute Wahl. Karte und Routenanweisungen sind übersichtlich gestaltet, Schwächen zeigt das Navigationsgerät insbesondere bei schweren Reisemobilen über 3,5 Tonnen. Nicht nachvollziehbar ist der Umstand, dass einen die Routenführung dann auf die Autobahn zwingt und trotzdem einen Parkplatz in der Tiefgarage empfiehlt.

Het navigatiesysteem TomTom Go Camper voorkomt dat je door een tunneltje wordt gestuurd waar een personenauto wel doorheen past, maar jouw veel grotere camper niet. Het is een kwestie van de juiste afmetingen invoeren en zorgeloos de bestemming bereiken, zo beweert de fabrikant. Wij nemen de proef op de som. 

Inhoud van de doos met TomTom Go Camper

Het gebruik van de TomTom Go Camper begint thuis, aan de keukentafel. Als het apparaat is opgeladen, licht het scherm op en weerklinkt het inmiddels vertrouwde TomTom-tromgeroffel. Je kunt meteen jouw persoonlijke instellingen vastleggen, zoals het gewicht, de lengte, de breedte en de hoogte van de camper. Met deze waarden houdt de TomTom rekening bij het uitstippelen van elke route. Updaten is ook belangrijk; na het intikken van het wachtwoord van de wifi thuis begint het apparaat zichzelf eerst te verversen. Dan heb je voldoende tijd om een kopje koffie te gaan zetten. Van latere updates krijg je automatisch bericht. Een van de updates die je helaas niet kunt uitzetten, is die van laadpunten voor elektrische voertuigen. Daar heb je als camperaar nog niet zo veel aan. Bij een grotere update, zoals een compleet nieuwe kaart, werkt updaten via de kabel betrouwbaarder dan draadloos. En gebruik dan de meegeleverde TomTom-kabel, want niet alle gewone usb-kabels werken op de TomTom, zo is mij gebleken. TomTom bevestigt dit. Er zijn bij een recente kaartupdate in totaal 9.775 ACSI POI’s (points of interest: interessante bestemmingen) toegevoegd, verdeeld in twee categorieën: ACSI Campings POI’s (6.113) en ACSI CampingCard POI’s (3.662). De eerste bevat campings in heel Europa, de tweede speciale aanbiedingen en kortingen voor kaarthouders. In Nederland zijn er 1.111 POI’s toegevoegd.

POI's zelf aanpassen of toevoegen

De POI’s die je kunt aan- en uitzetten zijn ASCI CampingCard, ACSI Campings, ADAC camperplaatsen en campings, ANWB camperplaatsen en campings en Campercontact camperplaatsen en campings. Laatstgenoemde vernieuwde recentelijk de eigen app, waardoor je nu online altijd de meest actuele stand van zaken op je telefoon hebt. Een categorie POI’s die node wordt gemist, is die van de Autohöfe in Duitsland. Veel camperaars komen daar graag om goedkoop te tanken, rustig te pauzeren, niet te hoeven zoeken naar een parkeerplaats en ook wel om – op doorreis – te overnachten. POI’s van andere partijen – zoals Campercontact – worden aangepast zodra TomTom deze binnen krijgt. Dit is doorgaans één keer per jaar. De laatste aanpassing van Campercontact voor de test dateert van 1 juli 2020. Een TomTom-woordvoerder: “Campercontact past hun database waarschijnlijk dagelijks aan, maar daarmee is geen directe verbinding. Daarnaast hebben wij ook onze eigen POI’s, die elk kwartaal worden aangepast zodat ze accurater zijn. Wanneer POI’s ontbreken, zijn veranderd of juist niet meer bestaan, dan heeft TomTom een portal om die informatie door te geven: tomtom.com/mapshare/tools .” Zelf een categorie POI’s toevoegen kan niet.

Stembesturing TomTom Go Camper en smartphone

We gaan nog even door met installeren. Na het downloaden van de juiste app (mydriveapp) kun je een verbinding tot stand brengen tussen de TomTom Go Camper en je smartphone. Handig wanneer je routes wilt uitzetten, omdat je die naar de TomTom kunt verzenden. Ook handsfree bellen kan op deze manier. Het navigatie-apparaat kent ook stembesturing: met ‘Hallo TomTom’ activeer je het menu met opdrachten zoals Ga naar huis, Zoom uit, Meld flitser, Ga naar een parkeerplaats en meer. De TomTom kent een aantal themakleuren, die de te volgen weg markeren en in het menu terugkeren. Ze dragen namen als knalroze, knalpaars, kosmisch blauw, kalm groen en glorieus geel. Deze kleuren zijn al vele jaren hetzelfde en ik mis daarom nog steeds rood. De route kun je in 3D zien, of in 2D in de rijrichting. Dat laatste heeft doorgaans mijn voorkeur, maar ik weet dat ik daarmee tot een kleine minderheid behoor. Als ik naar het zuiden rij, zie ik dat ook graag op mijn ‘kaart’ terug. Onderweg kun je van modus wisselen door boven de plus/min links in beeld op het pijltje te drukken. Daarna kun je met de plus inzoomen, tot ook alle POI’s zichtbaar worden. In de 3D-modus geeft het pijltje boven de plus/min de windrichting aan waarin je rijdt. In het menu kun je verder tal van instellingen aan je eigen voorkeuren aanpassen. Zoals de volgorde waarin je zaken als Zoek, Recente bestemmingen en Mijn plaatsen wilt zien. Je kunt een brede informatiebalk rechts in- en uitschakelen met de nog af te leggen afstand, de tijd, de verwachte aankomsttijd, tankstations en meer in beeld. Soms vallen icons hier over elkaar: door er even op te klikken krijg je ze tijdelijk apart te zien. De weg in de brede balk wordt daarin links weergegeven: alle icons (tankstations en meer) komen dus rechts van die weg. Met de weg getekend in het midden van die balk zouden de icons aan beide kanten geplaatst kunnen worden. Dat geeft minder overlappingen zodat je minder het scherm hoeft aan te raken. En dat is veiliger.

Tunneltje - let op bij omleiding

Er nadert een ASCI camperplaats, opgenomen in Campercontact.

Eenmaal op pad, met de zon in het gezicht, krijg ik spijt van mijn rode T-shirt. Het scherm van de TomTom is niet ontspiegeld en ik zie daarom een rood scherm en nauwelijks nog de te volgen route. Een beetje draaien aan het scherm helpt. Ontspiegeling – zoals bij eReaders – zou wel fijn zijn. Als je alle POI-opties aan hebt, kan het aardig druk worden op je scherm. Maar tijdens het rijden heb je daar gelukkig geen last van. Een POI-icon aanraken op het 2D-scherm resulteert in korte informatie met de naam van de camping of camperplaats en de mogelijkheid om daarnaartoe te navigeren. Dat is, wanneer je geen zin meer hebt om verder te rijden, wel heel erg handig. Overigens vindt het apparaat in Zoek ook veel campings al op naam of zelfs een gedeelte daarvan. ‘Kleine wo’ intikken is voldoende om camping De Kleine Wolf in Stegeren (Ommen) te vinden. In de TomTom heb ik inmiddels de maten van de camper ingevoerd. Met een hoogte van 258 cm zou hij mij nu niet een tunneltje door moeten sturen dat 255 cm hoog is. Welnu, dat gebeurt ook niet. Maar het kan gebeuren dat je, al rijdend, van de voorgestelde route afwijkt. Zit er in die afgeweken route het eerst zo keurig vermeden tunneltje van 250 cm hoog, dan heb je pech gehad: TomTom past de route gewoon aan door dat tunneltje. Op zo’n moment zou ik een noodsignaal willen zien, een rood blinkend scherm, een stem die schreeuwt STOP! Maar nee: TomTom ververst doodleuk de route en stuurt je door het te lage tunneltje. Oppassen dus! TomTom Mydrive op de PC werkt goed in de laatste versies van Firefox en Chrome en Safari. Maar niet in Vivaldi, een veelgebruikte browser in Windows. Een alleraardigste optie is die van de Roadtrips. Routes die anderen al reden of die door TomTom zijn ontwikkeld en die je kant-en-klaar naar je navigatieapparaat kunt uploaden. Zoals de Deutsche Weinstrasse, de Elfstedentocht, een rondje Denemarken/Zweden, de Deltawerken en nog vele andere. Het aanpassen van zo’n route op de PC kan ook. En rijdend kun je ook zelf weer een route opnemen om die later met de wereld te delen.

De TomTom Go Camper is mij al met al prima bevallen, maar ik maak enkele kanttekeningen. Zo merkte ik in Duitsland dat twee in mijn herinnering al heel lang bestaande tankstations helemaal niet op de TomTom-kaart voorkomen. En wil je graag een nieuwe camperplaats bezoeken, dan is de altijd actuele app Campercontact ideaal om het adres te achterhalen. De TomTom navigeert je wel naar het adres. De herhaalde foutmelding ‘Oeps Er is iets misgaan' bij het via wifi-updaten is helaas heel irritant.

Lors du premier lancement du GO Camper , celui-ci lancera un configurateur qui vous demandera de saisir les informations du véhicule  que vous utiliserez.

Vous pouvez ensuite saisir toutes les informations concernant la taille et le poids du véhicule. La définition de ces informations est facile mais constitue une étape très importante , car elle permettra au système de vous fournir des itinéraires appropriés .

Le TomTom GO Camper  propose des cartes mondiales très détaillées . Ces cartes incluent toutes les restrictions auxquelles vous pouvez être confronté avec votre camping-car/caravane, telles que les limites de poids, les routes étroites et les restrictions de hauteur.

Ce GPS GO   Camper inclut la fonction G uidage Avancé sur Changement de Voie , que l’on retrouve sur la plupart des GPS TomTom.

Il est très similaire au «guidage actif de voie» des modèles Garmin . Avec cette fonctionnalité, l’appareil est capable de créer un affichage, qui vous permet d’être dans la bonne voie aux jonctions et sorties compliquées. Il divise l’écran en ajoutant des images synthétiques et des animations, telles que des flèches pointant dans la bonne direction et des indications vocales.

Une fonctionnalité intéressante sur le GO Camper est la possibilité de mettre à jour les cartes sans avoir à utiliser un ordinateur .

J’ai vérifié et les services en direct sont en fait limités aux pays inclus dans la carte installée sur l’appareil lors de l’achat.

Services en direct

Les services en direct comprennent également des  informations sur les radars . Le système peut également avertir le conducteur lors de l’entrée dans une zone avec un radar de vitesse moyenne, vous rappelant la limite de vitesse actuelle et indiquant la vitesse moyenne du véhicule dans la zone.

TomTom GO Camper : Planification des voyages

Le TomTom GO Camper  peut être synchronisé avec TomTom MyDrive , qui vous permet de créer et de planifier de nouveaux itinéraires sur votre ordinateur et de les envoyer à l’appareil.

L’application permet aux utilisateurs de télécharger des points d’intérêts, et de partager des emplacements avec la communauté en ligne.

L’application comprend également la collection  TomTom Road Trips qui propose des centaines de voyages pré-planifiés, créés par TomTom et sa communauté.
