Yes Kicks Off 2024 ‘Classic Tales of Yes’ Tour: Set List

Yes kicked off their 2024 tour with a sprawling performance in Lisbon, Portugal on April 30.

Dubbed the Classic Tales of Yes Tour – the same name that was given to the band’s 2023 trek – the tour sees the prog rock legends dipping into material from throughout their vaunted career.

In a press release issued prior to the tour’s launch, longtime keyboardist Geoff Downes said the trek would feature “one of our most interesting sets to date, scanning through much of Yes’ history and with some previously unheard pieces together with music from out latest album, Mirror to the Sky . As always, we’re committed to pushing new boundaries and are very excited to be performing another chapter in the rich legacy of the band.”

That commitment was on full display at the Lisbon show, as Yes delivered a wide assortment of tunes. They began with "Machine Messiah," the opening track from their 1980 LP Drama . Next came "It Will Be a Good Day (The River)" from 1999's The Ladder , followed by the 1977 classic "Going for the One."

Other highlights from the set included a sprawling live rendition of the the four songs which made up 1973's Tales from Topographic Oceans . The evening ended with the band's beloved classic, "Starship Trooper."

The full set list from Yes’ tour opener can be found below.

When is Yes Touring in America?

Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late, and much-missed, Chris Squire , YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in Rock music history. Their 1970s albums “ The Yes Album ,” “ Fragile ,” “ Close To The Edge ,” “ Yessongs ” (a triple live album set), “ Tales From Topographic Oceans ,” “ Relayer ” and “ Going For The One ” were ground-breaking in musical style and content. Their music also became synonymous with artist Roger Dean whose distinctive YES logo design and artwork adorned the lavish gatefold presentation sleeves of many YES albums.

With sales of over 50 million records, the Grammy-award winning YES were inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017 where they performed “ Roundabout ” from the album “ Fragile ” and the FM radio-friendly “ Owner Of A Lonely Heart ” from the 1985 album “ 90125 .”

YES released their 22nd studio album in 2021, “ The Quest ,” produced by Steve Howe and which went to No. 1 in the UK Rock Albums Chart and entered the Official UK Album Chart at No. 20.

In 2022 came the sad news that drummer Alan White , ever-present in the YES line-up for 50 years, had passed away. The news came shortly before the band embarked on their classic, genre-defining album “ Close To The Edge 50th Anniversary Tour ” which they dedicated to Alan .

In February 2023, ahead of the news of the new studio album “ Mirror To The Sky ,” YES confirmed Jay Schellen as the new permanent drummer with YES , hand-picked to step into his mentor and friend Alan White ‘s role. “ I had done the 2016 tour on my own for Alan, ” says Jay . “ From late 2017 onwards, we had a beautiful partnership. I learned and discovered so much about Alan’s style. His passion and creativity was phenomenal. The new album has Alan’s presence all over it. It is inside of us. So, this is still, in my heart, Alan just being present and with us, and with me, in a big way. “

“ Mirror To The Sky ,” YES ‘ 23rd studio album, was released on 19 May 2023 to universally positive reviews in the music press. “ These artists manage to come up with a fresh and modern album, without losing their distinctive traits that have characterised their style over the years ,” stated Progressive Rock Journal .

yes tour europe

Yes – Bridgewater Hall, Manchester – Thursday 23rd May 2024

Yes return to Manchester and we’re back too, for the Classic Tales Of Yes tour that’s travelled through Europe and begins the UK run at the smart Manchester venue.

It’s been close to a couple of years since Yes played Manchester with the Close To The Edge 50th Anniversary show . We were there, as we/the team, have been in some form, ATB or otherwise, since 1980 or even before. Almost seems like yesterday yet the constantly evolving line up and a current wave of activity resulting in new material finds the 2024 Yes in pretty rude health. As some would say, the journey continues.

Classic Tales – there’s a clue in the title. A clear hint that we can expect some ‘Tales’ in the form of a toe dipped into the Topographic Oceans and also expectation of some crowd pleasing ‘classic’ Yes is hardly rocket science. However, there’s no Close To The Edge material making the set on this cycle, having formed the basis of the 2022 tour. Room then for a setlist shuffle…

A quick scan of said setlist sees a balance in favour of the early years, ie, the Seventies, where Steve Howe began his tenure with the band and the era and music in which he places his most faith. The Trevor Rabin period is almost naturally bypassed and the 13/14 albums from 1980-2024 represented by the opening two cuts and a nod to their latest Mirror To The Sky album. To be fair, it must be a thankless task to put together a set that meets the criteria for the classics, bearing in mind the songs that didn’t make the final cut. Some naysayers will be sounding off in the forums how there’s no Awaken this time (although Going For The One is well represented) and Relayer is once again notable by it’s absence.

However, there’s more than enough to acknowledge the fifty plus years legacy and the tweaks begin right away as the band enter in darkness as the intro music sees Stravinsky make way for Britten. Ten minutes of Machine Messiah (that along with second set opener, South Side Of The Sky representing the heavier side of Yes) kicks off. There’s also a swing toward the more accessible and red restrained elements with It Will Be A Good Day and Time And A Word – no big prog epics or masterworks, which has Howe declaring that after the “ electrifying Drama and a trip up The Ladder ” we get a well executed Your Move/All Good People and a brief inclusion of Simon & Garfunkel’s America in the jazzed up, Yessifed format as an amuse bouche workout.

Unusually, given he’s the longest serving current band member and a Yesshow feels odd without it, Howe doesn’t get a solo spot. Instead he sits with an acoustic for the beginning of the sublime Turn Of The Century that brings an emotional close to the first set. It’s a sublime version filled with finesse, each member adding a delicate touch and the highlight of the first half. It has the Manchester crowd on its feet for a deserved ovation.

Having spotlit Howe, over on the other side of the stage, the presence of Billy Sherwood and Jay Schellen might define the current line up as the ‘Sherwood/Schellen era’. Replacing two iconic yet sadly departed members, they keep the Yes machine on the move. Sherwood, as noted previously, has work his socks off to channel the power and grace of Chris Squire, almost constantly on the tips of the toes of his right foot as he eases into the famous basslines.

Bringing the Yesstory all the way to present day, Cut From The Stars is a reminder that Yes is still a creative beast, but the bulk of the second set is taken up with a lengthy, but manageable, medley from the four sides – yes, the LP still rules – or four movements given its classical structure, of Tales From Topographic Oceans. Both finale and centrepiece, it allows for another Howe ‘solo’ spot on acoutsic as he works the Leaves Of Green duet with Jon Davison in the middle of what he calls “ a revisitation ” to Topographic, “ all the bits in one side ” – and they do a fine job too to be fair, dropping the needle at the start of Side One and segueing in an out of familiar parts without the unnecessary doodling for which the album is criticised. Some parts are played for the first time in a l-o-n-g time and how wonderfully warming it is to hear sections of The Remembering and anything to do with Ritual is a thrill from the powerful to the pastoral as along with Turn Of The Century, Anderson’s original “ We hear a sound and alter our returning, We drift the shadows and course our way on home ” lyrics in particular induce a stingy eyed sentiment.

Encores of Roundbaout and Starship Trooper between standing ovations, see Sherwood stepping up to centre stage once Howe has taken a seated break after introducing Wurm and not for the first time, some bass pedals from Geoff Downes fill out the bottom end of the sound. The audience may have been at their respectful best but there’s no doubt that opening the UK jaunt in Manchester – which has Howe acknowledging the ‘hometown’ feel with Jon Anderson being from up the road in Accrington – is a smart move.

They say you can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends and your bands and Yes are always seemingly going to be one of those old, occasionally unreliable but constant companions who’ve been there. You can find a Reddit where someone asks “ is it worth seeing Yes live now? ” The evidence suggest there are still many, a fact recognised by Steve Howe – not the masses who saw them at QPR and Stoke City FC in 1975 – who still religiously continue to support a band that’s gone through thick and thin and whose music has soundtracked many lives.

Well put together Mike! I spotted you taking the photos up front as I was just 3 rows back! I always enjoy a concert review from where I’ve also been. It’s great that you’re a ‘long term’ YES fan also, so that you can give a ‘rounded’ appraisal of the band and their efforts! I wholly agree about ‘Turn of The Century’ being a ‘highlight’. During the ‘Tales’ medley, I found myself continuing the song in my head where they then broke into the next piece. It probably works better for someone who hasn’t heard the album! …but only someone coming along for the first time with their Dad would probably hear that! Great photos by the way!

Cheers Anthony. Turn Of The Century I think is an underrated classic and it might sound a bit soppy but I found myself filling up a couple of times at the sentiment of those words last night, remembering ‘all those many years ago…’ I guess TFTO still divides! After last night’s version i’d be interested in a final attempt to commit a trimmed down version before it’s too late but agreed about ‘continuing’ the song whilst it was interesting to wonder what was coming next!

Yes-Relayer-European-Tour-2023

Prog-rock legends Yes have announced they have rescheduled their European ‘Relayer’ tour dates for 2023, on which the band will perform their 1974 album in full, along with a selection of classic Yes material.

In March the band announced that they would alter their live plans in the UK to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Close To The Edge , and had hoped to reschedule the ‘Relayer’ dates for later this year. Logistical issues mean they’ve had to move those dates to 2023, although that does mean that the show at the Rockhal in Luxembourg has been added back in. Tickets remain valid for the rescheduled shows.

“We’re really looking forward to getting back onstage and performing for our fans,” says keyboard player Geoff Downes. “Relayer will be special.”

Jay Schellen : drums and percussion

Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late, and much-missed, Chris Squire, YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in rock music history. Their 1970s albums  The Yes Album ,  Fragile ,  Close To The Edge ,  Yessongs  (a triple live album set),  Tales From Topographic Oceans,   Relayer  and  Going For The One  were ground-breaking in musical style and content. Their music also became synonymous with artist Roger Dean whose distinctive YES logo design and artwork adorned the lavish gatefold presentation sleeves of many YES albums.

With sales of over 50 million records, the Grammy-award winning YES were inducted into  The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame  in 2017 where they performed  Roundabout  from the album  Fragile  and the FM radio-friendly  Owner Of A Lonely Heart  from the 1985 album  90125 .

YES released their 22 nd  studio album in 2021,  The Quest , produced by Steve Howe and which went to No. 1 in the UK Rock Albums Chart and entered the Official UK Album Chart at No. 20.

In 2022 came the sad news that drummer Alan White, ever-present in the YES line-up for 50 years, had passed away. The news came shortly before the band embarked on their classic, genre-defining album  Close To The Edge   50 th  Anniversary Tour  which they dedicated to Alan.

In February 2023, ahead of the news of the new studio album  Mirror To The Sky , YES confirmed Jay Schellen as the new permanent drummer with YES, hand-picked to step into his mentor and friend Alan White’s role.  “I had done the 2016 tour on my own for Alan,”  says Jay.  “From late 2017 onwards, we had a beautiful partnership. I learned and discovered so much about Alan’s style. His passion and creativity was phenomenal. The new album has Alan’s presence all over it. It is inside of us. So, this is still, in my heart, Alan just being present and with us, and with me, in a big way.”

Mirror To The Sky , YES’ 23 rd  studio album, was released on 19 May 2023 to universally positive reviews in the music press. ‘ Mirror to the Sky  is very much a band album, where all five members…  have been at the top of their game’ , stated The Progressive Aspect.  ‘YES will continue to have a role to play in shaping the future sounds of prog.’

They're getting old... but they weren't bad at all. I just hope this is their last tour. Starship Trooper was a good way to go out, and tbh Anderson Rabin and Wakeman is more yes than they are at this point member-wise... anyway, good concert, and I'd catch them if I were you just cuz I think this is it for them.

The concert was excellent. The band line-up performed excellently, with Geoff stepping in brilliantly for Chris Squire, and Jon Davison has an excellent voice as well, keeps up the quality of Yes' amazing music.

I wish I could go back and time and re-live the concert!! This is a definite must-see!! I can't wait till next time!!

Great band with great songs and a great history - it was great to see them purely for that reason. However, when I saw them at Oxford this year they seemed really under-rehearsed. I don't know if they had sound issues on stage but the drummer was in his own tempo for a lot of it. Even my Dad noticed and he's not musical!

It doesn’t hurt that there’s a lot of exciting newness in hospitality throughout both perennial hot spots and quieter cities that are now being thrust into Swifties’ consciousness. Because Europe is so easy to get around — remember those trains! — a pilgrimage to see the megawatt singer is also an invitation to explore further. For example, even if you missed her recently in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital is a worthwhile side trip as a slew of hotels are all ultra-attractive newcomers, including 100 Princes Street ( 100princes-street.com or via priceline.com ), the W Edinburgh ( marriott.com ) and the soon-to-open inland surfing destination Lost Shore Surf Resort .

Here, we round up a dozen of the most beautiful new hotels along Swift’s upcoming European tour dates .

Liverpool, England: June 15

The Halyard Liverpool Hotel : Just opened in March, this IHG Vignette Collection boutique hotel sits in the center of the city’s boho Ropewalks district for easy access to everything, including art, music and bazaars in Victorian warehouses. Charming and lush, the property features plenty of touches that reference the area’s mercantile history, but it’s also perfectly modern with amenities such as Temple Spa night creams and bath oils in the 133 rooms. The Halyard Liverpool, 123 Duke St., rooms from $273/night .

Cardiff, Wales: June 18

London, England: June 21, 22 and 23

Broadwick Soho : One of London’s buzziest — and most flamboyant — new hotels is this independent 57-room entry from November 2023, designed by illustrious Swedish interior designer Martin Brudnizki (Pendry West Hollywood, The Beekman). Its West End location makes it feel like an instant icon and its design references range from Jazz Age to disco era fabulousness with some English quirk. Among eating and drinking outlets there’s a basement-level, modern-meets–classic Italian restaurant and also a top-floor terrace bar, Flute. Broadwick Soho , 20 Broadwick Street, rooms from $757/night, via booking.com .

The BoTree : Not far from there is butler-staffed The BoTree, which opened in September 2023 with 169 vivid rooms and 30 opulent suites (think Dyson hairdryers, cocktail stations and balconies) all embodying an ethos of conscious luxury. The BoTree , 30 Marylebone Lane, rooms from $839/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Art’otel London Hoxton : Another appealing new getaway that opened in April with rooftop yoga, art workshops and aqua aerobics. Art’otel London Hoxton , 1-3 Rivington St., rooms from $391/night, via radissonhotels.com and booking.com .

Amsterdam, Netherlands: July 4, 5 and 6

Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam : This just-opened hotel combines the best of Amsterdam — a canal-side location in the museum district — with a heavy art influence via Stedelijk Museum to create a unique and colorful atmosphere behind a brick and glass facade. A ‘60s vibe pervades the 163 guest rooms, which are equipped with yoga mats. Perhaps even more enticing: the partnership with Girls Who Magazine that has produced experiences including a street art tour and a standup paddleboard adventure down a canal with stops for pizza and craft beer plus a local swimming spot. Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam , Hobbemakade 50, rooms from $210/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Zurich, Switzerland: July 9 and 10

Milan, Italy: July 13 and 14

Park Hyatt Milano : Fresh off a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Park Hyatt Milano debuted its refresh in late March, just in time for its 20th anniversary. Much inspiration for the chic new look came from the nearby legendary Duomo Cathedral, while Milanese architectural details are visible — from the facade to the bright, airy guest rooms. Fine dining is on offer at Pellico 3 Milano. However, the prettiest space may just be Mio Lab Cocktail Bar, where every great night should end. Park Hyatt Milano , Via Tommaso Grossi 1, rooms from $1,745/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Munich, Germany: July 27 and 28

Rosewood Munich : Before last October, Munich hadn’t seen a new luxury hotel in more than a decade, so the Rosewood opening in two Old Town landmark buildings (one a grand aristocratic residence) with interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners was anticipated, to say the least. The gracious hotel spans 73 generous rooms, 59 suites and five exclusive houses that are sumptuous odes to the Bavarian royal family. See-and-be-seen outlets include an Alpine-esque brasserie and a bar with live music, while the Asaya Spa takes up two floors and offers integrative wellness experiences. Rosewood Munich , Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse 1, rooms from $869/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Vienna, Austria: August 8, 9 and 10

Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection : This May 2024 opening takes its theme and name from its building’s 19th-century origins as the Austro-Hungarian military’s equestrian school. It was later a cinema, and now it’s home to 342 bedrooms that feel contemporary and warm, along with a lush green space in the Garden Palace Harrach’s former orchards. A 4,800-plus square foot wellness area, including an indoor swimming pool, gives guests ample opportunity to relax. Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection , Ungargasse 60, rooms from $270/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

In its announcement about Laug 's addition to the band's Power Trip lineup, AC/DC offered no explanation for the absence of the band's longtime drummer Phil Rudd , who rejoined AC/DC for the recording of the group's comeback album, "Power Up" , which came out in November 2020.

Rudd was ousted from AC/DC when he was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a New Zealand court in 2015 after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. He was replaced on the band's "Rock Or Bust" tour by Chris Slade , who had previously served as AC/DC 's drummer between 1989 and 1994, playing on the album "The Razor's Edge" .

Rudd , who appeared on all but three of AC/DC 's 18 previous studio albums, toured in support of his 2014 solo debut, "Head Job" . It was the release of that album that led indirectly to Rudd 's arrest, with the drummer allegedly so angry at a personal assistant over the way the record was promoted that he threatened to have the man and his daughter killed.

AC/DC postponed the last 10 dates of its spring 2016 North American trek after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss." The band went on to complete the European and North American legs of its "Rock Or Bust" tour with GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose as a "guest vocalist." At the time, Johnson had been AC/DC 's singer for 36 years, ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album.

To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again, the now-76-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose , who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems.

Ambrose , who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today, claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums. After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment, Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again.

Chaney is best known as the bassist of JANE'S ADDICTION and as a member of Alanis Morissette 's touring and recording band. Chaney was also a member of TAYLOR HAWKINS AND THE COATTAIL RIDERS and CAMP FREDDY , as well as being a prolific and versatile session musician, having played with artists including Joe Cocker , Shakira , Slash and Avril Lavigne to Sara Bareilles , Gavin Degraw , Cher , SHINEDOWN and Celine Dion . Chaney is also a founding member and partner in the all-star supergroup ROYAL MACHINES along with Dave Navarro ( JANE'S ADDICTION ), Mark McGrath ( SUGAR RAY ), Josh Freese ( FOO FIGHTERS ) and Billy Morrison ( BILLY IDOL ).

Bassist Cliff Williams announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC 's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour, which also saw Johnson leaving. However, Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" . Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip .

During an October 2020 interview with Dean Delray 's "Let There Be Talk" podcast, Cliff was asked if Johnson 's departure from the road was what led to his desire to stop touring. Cliff responded: "It was before then. I spoke to Angus about it initially. I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the 'Rock Or Bust' tour — that I just felt, for me, it was time to hang it up. I knew that I didn't wanna keep doing these two-year tours, and I didn't wanna hold them back, so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round. It was a tough tour to finish. God bless Axl for coming in and helping us out, finish it up. He did a great job. And at the end of that, I was definitely — that was it for me. Done — just done. That compounded the whole thing."

According to Williams , he wanted to take part in the recording sessions for "Power Up" as a tribute to Angus 's late brother, founding AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64. Malcolm is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks on "Power Up" .

"If 'Back In Black' has [late AC/DC singer] Bon Scott all over it, for me, 'Power Up' has got Malcolm Young ," Cliff said. "This is for him. And it's the band that we played together with for 40-plus years. And I wanted to do that — I wanted to come back and do that.

"We did some rehearsals earlier [in 2020] before this darn COVID thing popped up, and we had great rehearsals," he continued. "The band was playing really well. So [they asked me], 'Do you wanna do a few shows? 'Sure'. A few shows. We were planning on doing that. Everyone goes home to their respective homes, and bang, we've been here ever since [because of the coronavirus-related shutdown]."

Cliff went on to confirm that his commitment to AC/DC was only for "a few" dates in support of "Power Up" .

"For both [my mental and physical] health," he said. "I definitely have some physical issues, which I won't bore you with the details of. But, yeah, it's tough. I'm very grateful for everything. It's been fantastic. But I just don't wanna do that anymore."

Williams previously revealed that a "terrible" bout with vertigo contributed to his 2016 retirement. He also admitted the return of both Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd convinced him to rejoin the group. "It was like the old band back together," he told Rolling Stone . "It was not like starting over again, but as close to the band that's been together for 40-plus years as we can possibly make it. I didn't want to miss that."

The follow-up to 2014's "Rock Or Bust" , "Power Up" was recorded over a six-week period in August and September 2018 at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien , who also worked 2008's "Black Ice" and "Rock Or Bust" .

Geoff Downes: keyboards (1980–1981, 2011–present)

Jon Davison: lead vocals, acoustic guitar (2012–present)

Billy Sherwood: guitar, backing vocals (1994, 1997–2000), bass guitar, backing vocals (2015–present)

Jay Schellen: drums and percussion (2016–present)

Formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson and the late, and much-missed, Chris Squire, YES have been one of the most innovative, influential and best-loved bands in rock music history. Their 1970s albums The Yes Album , Fragile , Close To The Edge , Yessongs (a triple live album set), Tales From Topographic Oceans,Relayer  and Going For The One  were ground-breaking in musical style and content.

YES released their 22nd studio album in 2021, The Quest , produced by Steve Howe and which went to No. 1 in the UK Rock Albums Chart and entered the Official UK Album Chart at No. 20.

In 2022 came the sad news that drummer Alan White, ever-present in the YES line-up for 50 years, had passed away. The news came shortly before the band embarked on their classic, genre-defining album Close To The Edge 50th Anniversary Tour which they dedicated to Alan.

Mirror To The Sky , YES’ 23rd studio album, was released on 19 May 2023 to universally positive reviews in the music press. ‘ Mirror to the Sky is very much a band album, where all five members…  have been at the top of their game’ , stated The Progressive Aspect. ‘YES will continue to have a role to play in shaping the future sounds of prog.’
