Let’s get into everything you need to know for an ESL holiday lesson. Keep on reading!

ESL Travel and Holiday Activities

Here are the top ESL travel activities that you may want to try out with your students.

#1: Plan a Trip

Have your students plan a dream vacation in English! Instead of researching in their first language, use Google in English. In order to practice writing, keep notes only in English. Here’s an example of how you might plan your trip using English. You can have your students add as little, or as much detail as you’d like. However, the point of the activity is to practice writing in point form which is useful when writing outlines for tests or essays.

Day 1: Monday, January 1

Fly Seoul (3pm) —-> Vancouver (7am) Check in Hotel ABC, 123 Avenue Rest, relax

Day 2: Tuesday, January 2

Stay Hotel ABC Tour Stanley Park Eat Pub XYZ dinner

Day 3: Wednesday, January 3

Check out Hotel ABC Rent car Budget 123 Drive Whistler Rent skis shop ABC Go Skiing Lunch ski lodge Check in Hotel ABC Whistler Bed early

Procedure for one of my favourite ESL travel activities:

  • Give students time to do some Internet research about a place they want to go. It’s helpful to specify the number of days. I generally make a rule that they must do this research in English. Suggest some helpful websites where they might like to start (Trip Advisor, Air BnB, etc.).
  • Students can make a day-by-day itinerary of what they’re trip is going to look like.
  • They can share about their trip with the class or turn it in for a graded assignment.

#2: A-Z Alphabet Game

If you know that your students already know a fair bit about holiday and travel, you may want to try this quick warm-up game. Or, you could consider using it as a review game at the end of a class.

The way it works is that students, in pairs or small groups write down the alphabet on a piece of paper. Then, they have to think of one travel related word for each letter. It doesn’t have to be done in order. For example:

P: Passport

The winner is the team with the most completed letters at the end of the allotted time. Do you want to find out more? Check this out: A-Z Alphabet Game ESL .

#3: Travel Word Association

This is nice ESL activity to do if you know that your students have studied about travel and holidays before. They can shout out vocabulary words related to this and you can make a mind map or sorts on the board. Group similar things together. For example, articles of clothing.

Find out more about this quick ESL warmer right here: ESL Vocabulary Word Association.

#4: Postcards ESOL Travel Activity

If you can get your hands on some cheap postcards or have some laying around your house or teacher’s office, try out this fun writing activity. It may just be the novelty factor, but students seem to love it. This activity is ideal for working on common greetings, the past tense (more ideas here: ESL past tense games ), and using descriptive words, as well as using synonyms to avoid repetition.

Distribute the postcards to the students. You can do one per student, or put the students into pairs. They have to look at the picture on the front of the postcard and imagine that they went on this vacation. Then, they can write about their trip to a friend or family member.

Next, the students trade postcards with another student or group. After reading them, they can write a response back of at least a few sentences. Finally, you may want to display them around the class as they’re colourful and fun and other students may enjoy reading them! Have some fun with this ESOL travel activity.

  • Give each student or pair a postcard. They look at the picture and imagine what they did on that vacation, and then pretend that they’re writing to a friend or family member.
  •  Exchange postcards and another student or group have to write a response to what they read.
  • Display the postcards around your classroom (optional).

#5: Travel or Holiday Videos

I’m ALL about using videos with my ESL/EFL students. They’re fun, engaging and a nice way to grab student’s attention and introduce a topic. Of course, you can base an entire class around one too if you design the activities well.

If you want to find out more about using them in your classes and some activities and games to do with them, you’ll want to check this out: Using Videos for Teaching English .

#6: Dictogloss ESOL Travel Activity

This is a challenging activity that works on listening and writing skills. Find a short story related to holiday or travel. It could even be a description of your own vacation that you took recently.

Then, you read out the story to your students in a way that is a bit challenging for them to catch every word. Students have to take notes and then try to reconstruct what they heard based on their notes in small groups. You can read it again so that students have a chance to make some additions or corrections. Finally, students compare their version with the original.

Do you want to try it out with your students? You can learn more about one of the best ESL travel activities here: ESL Dictogloss Activity .

#7: Holidays ESL Lesson Plan

It’s easy to plan an ESL lesson about any topic, including holidays. Check out this video for the steps to follow:

#8: Yes/No Questions and Answers

If you think about it, holidays and travel lend themselves to a ton of yes/no questions. For example:

  • Did you fly or drive?
  • Did you eat some delicious things?
  • Was the food good?
  • Did you have nice weather?

If you want to see some activities or games to work on these kinds of questions, you’ll want to check this out: Yes/No Activities and Games.

#9: ESL Food Activities and Games

I’m not sure if it’s the same for you, but when I travel, it’s ALL about the food. I want to try all the delicious things where I’m staying! The good news is that I have a ton of fun, interactive games and activities for food. You can easily adapt most of them to focus on holidays.

You can find out more details here: ESL Food Activities.

#10: ESL Surveys

I love to use surveys in my classes because they lend themselves to just about any topic. In the case of travel, they’re ideal for working on the present perfect and simple past together.

For example:

Have you ever travelled to another country?

Where did you go?

If you want to know more about how to design and use surveys in your classes for an ESL travel lesson, then you’ll want to check this out: Surveys for ESL Students.

esl-travel-activities

ESL Travel Games and Activities

I also love to use ESL surveys to get students to express an opinion in English.

#11: Present Perfect Activities Related to Travel

The present perfect is often used to talk about vacations, travel and holidays. For example:

  • Have you ever been to another country?
  • Have you travelled to ______ before?

In order to incorporate this grammatical construction into some of your lesson, you’ll want to check this out: Present Perfect ESL Activities.

#12: Brochure Scanning

This is an excellent travel activity! You’ll have to get your hands on some travel brochures first. The way it works is that students get tons of practice with a reading sub-skill (scanning) because they have to look quickly through the brochures to find specific bits of information. For example, cost or number or days.

Do you want to try out this reading activity? You can find out all the details here: Brochure Scanning Reading Activity for ESL .

#13: Odd One Out ESL Warmer

This is a quick English warm-up activity that you can try out with your students. The way it works is that you write words, in groups of 4 on the board. 3 are similar and 1 is the odd one out. Students have to choose this one and say why it doesn’t fit. For example:

Bathing suit, sunglasses, boots, flip-flops

Answers: Boots because it’s not for a beach vacation. I accept many different answers as long as students support it well.

You can learn more about this ESL warm-up here: Odd One Out for ESL .

#14: Would you Rather?

I’m sure you’ve done this before with friends. You have to choose between two negative things, or two positive things. For example, how you want to die, or what you want to eat. In this case, students could choose between two types of vacation. For example:

Would you rather have a beach or forest vacation?

Would you rather stay in a big hotel, or an AirBNB?

  • 110 Pages - 06/22/2021 (Publication Date)

#15: Task Based Activity: Dream Vacation

I love to incorporate this style of teaching into my holiday lessons. It allows students more freedom to choose what they want to learn about and also builds opportunities for some serious teamwork.

In this case, I’ll have students work in groups of 2-3 to plan a dream vacation. They can do some research to find out all the details including how to get there, food, budget, where to stay, etc. Then, they either have to write a report and hand it in to me and/or do a short presentation to the class.

Need some more ideas for this style of a lesson? Check this out: Task-Based Learning .

#16: Travel Themed Charades

I love to play charades with my students. The way it works is that you can think of some travel-related phrases. For example:

  • Flying on a plane
  • Sleeping on a bus
  • Eating noodles
  • Buying souvenirs

Then, students have to act this out and their teammates have to guess what the phrase is. More details here: ESL Charades.

#17: Travel Journal

Encourage students to keep a travel journal for a fictional trip. They can describe their experiences, sights, and sounds, using new vocabulary.

#18: Eliciting in an ESL Travel Lesson

Unless your students are absolute beginners, then it’s likely that they already know a good amount of travel and holiday vocabulary. That’s often why I like to start off my ESL traveling lesson by using some eliciting techniques. There are two main reasons for this.

The first reason is that it’s possible to find out what the students already know about this topic to avoid wasting class time covering these things. The second is that it helps students activate their prior knowledge about travel/holidays to make the new things they learn more memorable. Learn how to do this tactic for an ESL holiday lesson here:

ESL Eliciting Advice .

#19: Travel Listening Lesson

A nice way to talk about any topic is through a listening lesson. In this case, find a conversation between two people talking about an upcoming vacation plan. Or, someone talking about a favourite vacation from the past (it could even be you). Then, design an entire listening lesson around that. Find out how here:

#20: Idiom ESL Traveling Activity

There are lots of idioms related to holidays, travel and transportation. Here are just a few of them:

  • All hands on deck
  • To send flying
  • Bump in the road
  • Off the rails
  • Train wreck
  • Asleep at the wheel
  • Fall off the wagon
  • Hit the road

One of the best ways to make these idioms super memorable is to do this fun activity. Afterwards, your students will never forget! Learn more about this ESL activity:

Idiom Activity for Language Learners .

#21: Concentration ESL Traveling Vocabulary

One of the best ways to review new words during an ESL holiday or travel lesson is to play this memory game. Depending on the level of the students, make some matching pairs of cards with the following:

  • Word/picture
  • Word/definition
  • Word/clue about the word

Then in small groups, students play the game to find the matches. Find out all the details about how to set it up and play:

ESL Concentration Game .

#22: Speaking Fluency Activity

To use this activity with a unit on holidays or travel, have students talk about a past, or upcoming vacation.

#23: Me Too!

Students have to make a true statement about themselves related to holidays and travelling. For example:

  • I’ve been to Japan.
  • I hate the beach.
  • My family goes on a big vacation every summer.

If other students can agree, they stand up and say, “Me too!”

#24: Labour Day Guessing Game

#25: Holiday Interviews

Pair students and have them interview each other about their favorite holidays. They can then present their partner’s holiday to the class.

#26: Travel Bingo

Create bingo cards with images or words related to travel and holidays. Students mark off the squares as they learn new vocabulary.

#27: Travel-Themed Role-Plays

Set up role-plays where students act as travelers, airport staff, or hotel receptionists. This helps them practice common travel dialogues.

#28: Travel Vocabulary Pictionary

Play Pictionary using travel-related words. Students take turns drawing and guessing the vocabulary words.

#29: Travel Storytelling

Ask students to create and share short stories about a memorable travel experience they’ve had or wish to have in the future.

#30: Travel Debate

Have students debate the pros and cons of traveling. This encourages critical thinking and speaking skills.

Travel and Holiday Vocabulary

Here are some of the most common vocabulary words that you may want to teach your students related to traveling for an ESL holiday lesson.

  • bathing suit
  • boarding pass
  • vaccination
  • The months of the year in English

fun free road trip printable games

Our last road trip activities for kids post has been read more than 50,000 times! And it’s been shared more than 8,000 times.  Wow – people really liked our ideas! It was full of the ideas we came up with to survive travelling with kids on a long road trip.  I’ve got a new tool in my family travel arsenal: Road Trip Printables!

Our last real road trip was 5 years ago and as we plan our next long road trip I’m happy to reread the former one and remember the tips!

I don’t know how I forgot some of them – I’m adding aluminum foil to my list right now. 😜

This year our kids will be older: 11 and 13.  We expect our ride to be smoother than last time – for one they’ve both got bigger bladder capacity now.   (This time I don’t expect our son to need to publicly urinate in front of state troopers .)

But this time around we are spending more total hours in the car travelling from Ontario to Calgary, Alberta and back.  Dang, Ontario is big – it’s going to take two days just to get to the border from home!

We need some new ideas to keep our family amused during these extra long hours in the car.

I decided to find a whole bunch of free printable road trip car games and make a huge folder of them to spread out over the drive.

I plan to also bring some plastic sheet protectors and low odor dry erase markers to reuse the best games.  ‘Cause I ain’t bringing a printer on this trip with us.

It would seem like a waste to just amass such a great list for ourselves when we can share them all with you!   So here’s a list of 25+ great free road trip printables – games worth printing for your long drive ahead.

Watch: Pritchard hits another wild buzzer-beater in Game 5

Watch: Pritchard hits another wild buzzer-beater in Game 5 originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Payton Pritchard continues to be a spark off the bench for the Boston Celtics , once again knocking down a ridiculous buzzer-beater in Game 5 of the 2024 NBA Finals on Monday night at TD Garden.

With four seconds remaining in the first half, Pritchard checked into the game as Luka Doncic shot free throws. After Doncic missed the second attempt, Al Horford hauled in the rebound and made an outlet pass to Pritchard on the wing.

With one dribble to advance up the court, Pritchard heaved up a shot from behind half-court and drilled the 49-footer as time expired to give Boston a 21-point lead going into halftime.

It's Pritchard's second made half-court heave this series, as he also hit a similar shot in Boston's 105-98 Game 2 win . Also checking in for the exact same situation, Pritchard drilled a 34-foot shot before the buzzer.

Pritchard's miraculous shot in Game 5 was the longest made shot in the NBA Finals in the last 25 years, per ESPN Stats & Info .

Stars around the league were quick to react to Pritchard's buzzer-beating ability, while Kansas City Chiefs star and noted Mavs fan Patrick Mahomes was none too pleased.

ICC T20 World Cup 2024

"Travel can't be an excuse.." Rohit Sharma ahead of India's Super 8 game at ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has so far scored 68 runs at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Team India captain Rohit Sharma stated that the Men in Blue will focus on their strengths and what they can do as a team ahead of the Super 8s round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 .

India will face Afghanistan in their first Super 8 match on June 20 at Bridgetown. India’s unbeaten record in the group stage concluded with low-scoring victories over Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States of America, with their final game against Canada on June 15 being rained out.

While the Rashid Khan-led team won convincingly over Uganda, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, they will face India in the Super 8s after losing by 104 runs to the West Indies. On the other hand, India will enter into the contest with high confidence as they played on a difficult pitch in New York.

The 37-year-old India captain Rohit Sharma stated that everyone in the team is excited and is looking forward to the Super 8s and knockout stages of the ongoing marquee event. He also said that experience of playing in West Indies will come in handy in this second stage of the tournament.

“We will look to focus on our skill and what we need to do as a team. We have played a lot of games here. Everyone understands what they need to do. Everyone is looking forward and are excited at the same time,” Rohit Sharma told ICC.

India had made it into the semi-final of the T20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia, only to be decimated by England.

That’s not an excuse: Rohit Sharma on India playing its three Super 8s games in five days

The Men in Blue stayed undefeated in Group A, defeating Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States in low-scoring games in New York, while their last game against Canada in Florida was abandoned owing to a damp outfield.

After a week off, the Rohit Sharma-led team will return to play in the Super 8s. India will begin their Super 8 campaign against Afghanistan in Barbados on June 20, followed by games against Bangladesh and Australia in Antigua and St. Lucia on June 22 and 24, respectively.

While the schedule is tough given the travel time involved, India captain Rohit Sharma does not see it as a challenge.

“There is real keenness in the group to go and do something special. It clearly shows that everyone wants to make a difference and we take our skill sessions quite seriously. There is something to achieve in every skill session that you do. Once we play the first game, we are going to play the next two in 3-4 days. It is going to be a little hectic but we are used to all of this. We travel and play a lot so that is not going to be an excuse,” Rohit said.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj.

Most Celtics fans, with some exceptions, think Monday’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals will be different after the Mavericks took a 122–84 win in Game 4 last Friday.

Celtics fans are coming from all over the country to witness, what they hope, will be history. Carlos Diaz and his wife flew up from Florida Monday morning, and he says he’s not worried.

“I told all my friends the script for this game: I said they go up 3 – 0, take it easy in Dallas, bring it back to Boston and win it in front of all the fans,” Diaz said.

He adds that he hasn’t purchased tickets yet but has plans in the works. The secondary market has the cheapest ticket on sale at around $1,200. Frank Roberts from South Carolina says he anticipated Game 5 and moved fast to plan ahead.

“We got them before they became real expensive, before anyone knew there was going to be a Game 5,” Roberts said. “I think the Celtics are going to blow them out. I think it's going to be a beat down — a revenge game.”

However, not all fans are feeling as confident. Alon Miller came to Boston From Israel and said the Celtics are in for a fight.

“They have to play desperate basketball, because we saw last game. I think tonight is the night, it's going to be hard,” Miller said.

Kevin Clark from Derry, New Hampshire, says the C’s have nothing to worry about. “This team ain't bad at all. When you win 15 out of 18, you're doing good,” he said.

“This is their home, so I'm voting for them,” Mildred Caldron from Puerto Rico said.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Florida Panthers’ decision to spend more time at home and wait an extra day to travel from one corner of the continent to the other during the Stanley Cup Final became the talk of the series when their flight Wednesday got delayed by severe storms in and around Fort Lauderdale.

The plane eventually got off the ground, landed late in Edmonton and got the Panthers to their hotel less than 24 hours before facing the Oilers in Game 3. The travel woes were the buzz of their morning skate Thursday, with players and coach Paul Maurice downplaying them at every turn.

“Everybody else is making it a bigger deal than what it was,” Swedish defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson said. “We got in three hours later than expected, but we got everything done that we wanted to do before bedtime. Sometimes you can’t really do anything about the weather. We can just control what we can control, and it just played out that way. I don’t think it was a big deal.”

The NHL built an extra travel day into the schedule, a good thing because this is the farthest apart two finalists have been in league history: 2,543 miles (4,092 kilometers) between their home arenas.

Typically, the teams fly from the first city to the second after Game 2, and the Oilers followed that plan to go home while the Panthers opted for another night in their own beds and a practice in their own arena.

“We pay a bunch of really smart people to have better answers than we do,” Maurice said. “This is the way we do it. We have reasons for it. It’s reasoned. And I’m 100% good with it.”

Good with it because they arrived but not until after air traffic controllers in Edmonton had a little fun with the situation. According to audio posted on social media, they joked to the pilots that they would be holding up landing long enough to run out of fuel and divert to another airport.

“The last call you guys need is (NHL commissioner) Gary Bettman calling the ATC,” one of them says, laughing.

There was plenty of laughing and joking around going on before and during the flight. Equipment managers returning to the practice rink soaking wet from loading gear got standing ovations, and the food kept coming.

“The coaches put on 7 pounds yesterday, Maurice said. ”That’s the only ramification. We ate 12 meals.”

When players, coaches and staff were not eating, many were playing cards. Poker is one of the regular games taking place on the Panthers plane.

“The guys who played cards had a little bit more time to win or lose some money,” Finnish forward Anton Lundell said. “Everybody had a great time, we had a great sleep and we had a great practice.”

Practice included Aleksander Barkov participating after leaving Florida’s Game 2 victory following a high hit from Edmonton’s Leon Draisiatl, erasing whatever little worry there was about the captain and playoff MVP candidate not being available. The Panthers did their usual gameday routine and turned all the questions about their long travel day into a rallying point.

“We love adversity — we got some more team bonding time,” said Evan Rodrigues, who scored a series-best three goals in the first two games. “We didn’t care. If we had to leave this morning, we would’ve left this morning. It’s no excuses this time of the year, and we would’ve embraced the challenge. It was a unique experience. It was some serious rain coming down but obviously happy to make it.”

Asked about their opponents getting in late, Edmonton’s Dylan Holloway did not have much sympathy.

Quite the opposite.

“Definitely heard about it,” Holloway said. “And not mad about it.”

Caitlin Clark is not an alternate on US Olympic basketball team, but there's a reason

The roster for the United States women's basketball team for the Paris Olympics was named Tuesday, and Caitlin Clark's name was nowhere to be found .

Not even as an alternate.

That's because USA Basketball didn't name any alternates. However any player in the Olympic pool, as Clark is, would be eligible to be considered if someone gets hurt or cannot play for other reasons.

But alternates would be chosen based on the position that needs to be filled. So if a center or forward gets hurt, Clark would probably not be considered. Or wouldn't be among the first players considered. If it's a guard, however, Clark could be in line to replace that player.

The team headed to Paris includes Diana Taurasi, Napheesa Collier, Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, A'Ja Wilson and Jackie Young. The roster combines for 15 Olympic gold medals and 18 FIBA World Cup titles.

Despite shattering numerous college records before being drafted No. 1 overall in April's WNBA draft, Clark will sit this Olympics out.

“I know it’s the most competitive team in the world,”  Clark said Sunday , after news leaked that she had not made the team. "… Honestly, no disappointment."

The Paris Games’ Mascot, the Olympic Phryge, Boasts a Little-Known Revolutionary Past

The Phrygian cap, also known as the liberty cap, emerged as a potent symbol in 18th-century America and France

When France decided on a mascot for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games, it didn’t go with a cartoonish animal , as many other host nations have in years past. Instead, the country chose to honor, of all things, a hat.

The Olympic Phryge (pronounced “fri-jee-uh”), as the mascot is called, is likely to be familiar to any French schoolchild. It’s based on a floppy red cap that became, and remains to this day, an indelible emblem of the late-18th-century French Revolution. (France also debuted the Paralympic Phryge, which has a prosthetic right leg.)

“We chose an ideal rather than an animal,” said Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet at a press conference. “For French people, it’s a very well-known object that is a symbol of freedom.”

Almost lost to history, however, is the fact that the phryge was once a symbol of the American Revolution, too. If not for the hat’s importance to the colonial Patriots, it’s possible their French counterparts would never have adopted the phryge as their own.

A hat with a history

The phryge itself dates back much further than either of these revolutions. Many historians trace it to the pileus , a cap worn by the formerly enslaved in ancient Rome to indicate that they had been freed.

The name phryge comes from Phrygia , an ancient region in what is now Turkey, where similar hats were worn sometime before the seventh century B.C.E. The Phrygian cap was characterized by a distinctive cone on top that could flop over toward the front or back.

While the cap appears on many ancient coins , usually on the head of a god or a goddess, it gradually disappeared from symbolic use as the centuries rolled on. It re-emerged in the 17th century as scholars in England became more interested in the classical world, and it appeared in the future United States as early as 1733, on the official seal of the Georgia Trustees , who governed that colony under a charter from George II.

Phrygian caps gained wider currency in the 1760s as American colonists chafed under British rule. Paul Revere, the Boston silversmith best known today for his midnight ride in 1775, warning of an impending British attack, was largely responsible for this trend.

In 1766, Revere designed an obelisk to be erected on Boston Common in celebration of the repeal of the Stamp Act , a reviled British law that imposed a tax on the paper used in legal documents, newspapers and even playing cards in the Colonies. On one side of the obelisk, a woman representing liberty carries a Phrygian cap atop a pole. American revolutionaries embraced the hat as a symbol, now calling it a liberty cap .

The liberty cap became one of the most ubiquitous images in the colonists’ fight for freedom, frequently pictured either on the head of the goddess Liberty or atop a spiked staff she carried.

After the British surrendered in 1781 and the new nation came into being, the liberty cap lived on for decades, featured on many U.S. coins , state flags and seals. In at least one early rendering, Uncle Sam wears a liberty cap rather than the red, white and blue top hat seen today.

A red liberty cap can still be found on the official flag of the U.S. Army , as well as the seal of the U.S. Senate . The figure of Lady Liberty, often wearing a liberty cap, continued to grace U.S. coins for some 150 years, among them the Mercury dime , which was discontinued in 1945 and replaced by the Roosevelt dime but occasionally shows up in pocket change today.

“When considering options for our first coins, Congress debated over whether to feature George Washington and later presidents,” the U.S. Mint notes on its website . “Many believed that putting the current president on a coin was too similar to Great Britain’s practice of featuring their monarchs. Instead, Congress chose to personify the concept of liberty rather than a real person.”

A controversial cap

But it wasn’t long before liberty caps became the subject of controversy, in part because they were so closely identified with the French Revolution, which had shocked many Americans with its bloodshed. The caps’ “ties to the radical phases of the French Revolution limited their use as symbols for American politicians after the mid-1790s,” says Andrew Detch , a historian at the University of Colorado Boulder. “They became symbolic of both radicalism and political faction, two things that most political leaders in the United States feared.”

In the 19th century, some American politicians found a new reason to object to the liberty cap as a national symbol. When the U.S. Capitol was being designed in the 1850s, the original plan for a statue atop the dome called for a classically garbed woman wearing a liberty cap. But Jefferson Davis, then-secretary of war and soon-to-be president of the Confederacy, strenuously objected, apparently fearing that a symbol that could be traced back to formerly enslaved Romans would send the wrong message, especially to enslaved Black Americans. As a result, the Statute of Freedom wears a helmet instead. Still, the liberty cap remains well represented within the Capitol in murals and other artworks.

In France, meanwhile, the liberty cap—often referred to as the bonnet rouge , or red cap, after its typical color, or bonnet de laine , after its common material of wool—began to appear in paintings and engravings around 1789, at the outset of the French Revolution. Unlike their American counterparts, who used the liberty cap largely as a symbol, many French revolutionaries actually wore the hats.

An early design for the statue at the top of the U.S. Capitol's dome featured a liberty cap

Historian Charles Downer Hazen described one momentous day, June 20, 1792 , when “several thousand men, wearing the bonnet rouge, armed with pikes and carrying standards with the Rights of Man printed on them,” stormed Louis XVI’s palace in Paris to demand that the French king sign two decrees that he’d previously vetoed. Louis refused, but possibly to placate the invaders, he put a bonnet rouge on his head and drank a glass of wine they provided him. “The crowd finally withdrew, having committed no violence, but having subjected the king of France to bitter humiliation,” Hazen wrote.

Satirical engravings of Louis with a wine bottle in his hand and a red cap on his head soon started circulating in France. The revolutionaries still weren’t satisfied, however, and they removed his head altogether by sending him to the guillotine in January 1793. Louis’ wife, Marie Antoinette , followed him to the grave that October.

When Charles Dickens published his fictional account of the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities , in 1859, he outfitted characters in “coarse” or “rough” red caps throughout the book. The novel’s illustrator also featured the caps in several accompanying drawings .

The cap similarly appears in Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel about the Paris Uprising of 1832 , Les Misérables , in which rebels once more donned and displayed the bonnet rouge in their attempt to oust a newly formed French monarchy. “In Burgundy and in the cities of the South,” Hugo wrote , “the tree of Liberty was planted. That is to say, a pole surmounted by a red cap.”

From those days to these, the liberty (or Phrygian) cap has been as celebrated in France as it has been ignored in the U.S. When a female French admirer wished to honor Benjamin Franklin , then the ambassador to France, in 1783, she gave him a cane or walking stick capped with a small gold replica of a liberty cap. Franklin so valued the present and all it symbolized that he willed it to his friend George Washington upon his death in 1790. The artifact now resides in the collections of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History .
