tourist super mario odyssey

Earn extra Power Moons and follow the travails of the Desert Wanderer as he explores the many fanciful kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey .

This humble dweller of Tostarena Town wants to see the big, wide world — and he doesn’t have a hat-shaped flying machine like Mario. Instead, he settles for a taxi. How does the taxi reach kingdoms on the other side of the ocean? Your guess is as good as our’s.

Like Princess Peach and other explorers, the Desert Wanderer will appear in a series of locations. You’ll want to make a quick pit-stop and find him for the bonus Power Moon collectibles he provides, and to simply enjoy his little side-story. Here’s where to find him.

The Desert Wanderer won’t start, ahem, wandering until after you’ve defeated the Sand Kingdom boss and freed the desert from an chilly predicament. When the giant blocks of ice are gone, the taxi driver will appear in Tostarena Town, and the Desert Wander’s journey will begin.

Sand Kingdom

  • Desert Wanderer #1 : The first location for the Desert Wanderer is right outside Tostarena Town. Go for a return trip and talk to the Sand Kingdom NPC — he’ll make his next destination pretty obvious.

Metro Kingdom

  • Desert Wanderer #2 : Again, defeat the boss and return to the Metro Kingdom when the area is sunny. The Desert Wanderer is beside his taxi, near the Odyssey landing zone.

Cascade Kingdom

  •   Desert Wanderer #3 : No bosses to defeat this time. You’ve already got the job done! From the Odyssey, run towards the Crazy Cap store to find the tourist next to his taxi.

Luncheon Kingdom

  • Desert Wanderer #4 : Next stop — the festival in the Luncheon Kingdom. Warp to the Central Plaza flag and these two are impossible to miss.

Moon Kingdom

  • Desert Wanderer #5 : Take a trip to the Moon Kingdom when you’re done enjoying the sights and implied-smells of the Lunchon Kingdom. From the Odyssey, swivel left to spot the Desert Wanderer’s taxi near a mess of NPCs from every other level.

Mushroom Kingdom

  • Desert Wanderer #6 : The dancing fool finally arrives at the Mushroom Kingdom. This is his last stop, and you’ll find him in the Fountain Square area outside the castle. Give him a talking to, and you’ll unlock his final location.
  • Desert Wanderer #7 : No more adventures for the Desert Wanderer. He returns to his home, the Sand Kingdom, and he’s right back where he started outside Tostarena Town. Give him a final talking to for another Power Moon prize.

Where to find the Desert Wanderer in Super Mario Odyssey

Lots of you reading this probably wouldn’t mind taking a quick holiday. Using a taxi to shuttle you from country to country, though? Probably works out as being just a *tad* expensive. That doesn’t bother the Desert Wanderer, who can be found in Super Mario Odyssey drinking in the sights and sounds of its varied and, frankly, astonishingly imaginative countries. Who wouldn’t want to visit the colourful Luncheon Kingdom, or wade through pure white sand on the Moon Kingdom? Anyway, here’s where to find the Desert Wanderer.

  • Super Mario Odyssey guide: everything you need to know to save Peach
  • 17 things I wish I knew before playing Super Mario Odyssey
  • Hidden mechanics that Super Mario Odyssey never tells you about

To start with, you’ll have to defeat the Ice boss in the Sand Kingdom . See, while he’s still around there’ll be ice blocks all around the desert, one of which has frozen a taxi. After he’s defeated this taxi will be freed up, meaning it can take the Desert Wanderer wherever he wishes. After defeating the Ice boss, run to the front of the town and you’ll see a the Desert Wanderer standing beside the taxi. Talk to him and he’ll tell you that he wants to go to Metro Kingdom...so guess where you’ll find him next?

tourist super mario odyssey

Hop on the Odyssey and journey to - yes, you guessed it! - Metro Kingdom . Defeat the kingdom’s boss (to unlock the much sunnier, more pleasant version of Metro Kingdom) and then warp to the entrance. There you’ll see the Desert Wanderer and his driver buddy chatting away. Simply hop into their conversation and you’ll hear that next our friend from the Sand Kingdom wants to go to somewhere with an amazing waterfall.

tourist super mario odyssey

Which means you’re heading to the Cascade Kingdom next. Once you’re there, all you have to do is run up as if you’re going towards the Cap Shop. It’s practically impossible to miss the fella by his taxi, and you know the routine by now: talk to him, and he’ll spin rhetoric about the next location on his holiday extravaganza. Sounds like his belly is rumbling, as he’s off somewhere delicious...and so are you.

tourist super mario odyssey

Fly to the Luncheon Kingdom (and try not to look at the clock while reading this). Warp yourself towards the central plaza and before you’re able to get close to the festival guess what will come into view? That’s right: Mr. Desert Wanderer. While the smells of the delicious stew are floating through Mario’s nostrils, have a brief catch-up with the tourist extraordinaire and then head off and up, up, up and away to the Moon Kingdom.

tourist super mario odyssey

Far above in the sky in the Moon Kingdom - and more importantly, to the left of the Odyssey - you’ll see a group of characters from various worlds talking about how beautiful Earth looks from so far away. Right beside them is the person who would make most travel agencies jump for joy. Once you’ve spoken to him and his taxi driver buddy, he’ll not-so-subtly imply that he wants to see mushrooms next. Like, a lot of them.

tourist super mario odyssey

I don’t even think I need to spell out where you go next. Once you feel Mushroom Kingdom ’s lush grass below your feet, sprint to the other side of the fountain to see the familiar yellow vehicle and our maraca-shaking friend. This time the Desert Wanderer has finally sated his wanderlust and he’s heading home. Which means it’s time for you to return to…

tourist super mario odyssey

...the Sand Kingdom ! Go to the same place where you started this whole wild goose chase (in front of the town) and there you’ll see our globetrotting friend. Have one final talk with him (hold back your tears, everyone). And that’s it! Your quest is now done, and you should be about 7 Power Moons richer. Hooray!

How to find all Mushroom Kingdom power moons

Our power moons guide puts the collectibles in the same order as Super Mario Odyssey .

1. Perched on the Castle Roof

 alt=

Throw Cappy at the scarecrow to the west of the castle, and walk up to the roof. There’s a power moon on the northeast spire (which is at the far left side from where you arrive on the roof). To get it, we hopped onto a nearby tower in the center of the roof and hat jumped to our destination.

2. Pops out of the Tail

tourist super mario odyssey

From the fountain right in front of the Odyssey, turn west and follow the stream. Just past Talkatoo on the south bank, you’ll see a tree with a strange branch. Jump up and spin Cappy on the Tanooki-tail-looking branch to get this moon.

3. Caught Hopping at Peach’s Castle!

tourist super mario odyssey

Just to the east of Peach’s Castle, there’s a Toad in a hedge maze. This kingdom’s rabbit is also hopping around here. Jump up on the hedges to get the drop on him.

4. Gardening for Toad: Garden Seed, 5. Gardening for Toad: Field Seed, 6. Gardening for Toad: Pasture Seed and 7. Gardening for Toad: Lake Seed

tourist super mario odyssey

In the center of the hedge maze where you got moon 3, there’s a Toad with four pots around him. You have to wander the kingdom to find all four seeds and return them here.

  • The Garden Seed is to the west, just down the hill from the maze.
  • Head south from the maze toward the Crazy Cap shop. There are two trees behind the shop. The Field Seed is between them.
  • The Pasture Seed is all the way across the kingdom. Head southwest from the maze, past the Talkatoo, generally in the direction of the lake. There’s a tree on the edge of the kingdom just south of the sheep pen (see moon 12). The seed is right behind the tree.
  • The Lake Seed is, unsurprisingly, in the lake. Head to the Mushroom Pond, swim to the bottom, and take a look around for the seed. Follow the stream back up toward the maze and plant your final seed.

Once you’ve planted all of the seeds, wander off for a little bit. The seeds will blossom in about 15 (real world) minutes.

8. Grow a Flower Garden

tourist super mario odyssey

Between the Odyssey and the Goomba Woods — just a little north of the hedge maze — look for a double ring of flowers. Do a spin toss to get them all to bloom and you’ll get a moon.

9. Mushroom Kingdom Timer Challenge

tourist super mario odyssey

Just north of the hedge maze, there’s a Toad admiring a scooter . Grab the scooter and drive over next to the nearby scarecrow. Park it pointing generally northwest. Hop off, toss Cappy onto the scarecrow, then climb back onto the scooter. Ignore everything and just drive straight for the moon. You’ll have plenty of time with the speed of the scooter.

10. Found at Peach’s Castle! Good Dog!

tourist super mario odyssey

Befriend the dog hanging around the Crazy Cap shop, then lead him to the top of the hill to the southeast of the Odyssey.

11. Taking Notes: Around the Well

tourist super mario odyssey

To the west of Peach’s Castle, there’s a large well with an 8-bit pipe sticking out of the side. Head in and run all the way around the well counterclockwise to find the note. Sprint back around clockwise, then exit the 2-D world. There will be another ring of notes outside. Just run into the middle of the ring and spin toss Cappy.

12. Herding Sheep at Peach’s Castle

tourist super mario odyssey

On the far western edge of the kingdom, basically straight west from the fountain in front of the Odyssey, you’ll find a lonely Toad in an empty sheep pen. Your job is to bring his six sheep back.

  • There’s one just to the east of the pen.
  • There’s another straight north of the pen, next to the well from moon 11.
  • There’s one just to the southeast of the Odyssey near the painting that takes you to the Snow Kingdom.
  • There’s another on the eastern side of the kingdom, northeast of Crazy Cap.
  • One is hiding on the western side of the Goomba Woods in the far north of the kingdom.
  • The final sheep is at the eastern side of the Goomba Woods, next to the rocket that takes you to the Picture Match and moons 23 and 24.

Drive all six sheep back into the pen and you’ll get your moon.

Drain the moat

tourist super mario odyssey

To get moons 13-16 and 38, you to move around in the moat surrounding Peach’s Castle. There are posts around the bottom of the moat. Swim around and pull them all out to drain the moat.

13. Gobbling Fruit with Yoshi, 14. Yoshi’s Second Helping! and 15. Yoshi’s All Filled Up!

tourist super mario odyssey

For these three moons, you’ll need to be in control of Yoshi. You’ll find his egg on the roof of Peach’s Castle. The easiest way up is to head to the west side of the castle. You’ll find a scarecrow there, but this one doesn’t start a Timer Challenge — it just creates some stairs you can climb up to the roof. Once there, find Yoshi’s egg, hatch it and capture him. Now all that’s left is to collect all 30 pieces of fruit around the Mushroom Kingdom. For every 10 Yoshi eats, you’ll get a moon.

  • Do a loop around the Castle roof and the moat.
  • Make sure you get the large one blocking the pipe in the moat.
  • You’ll find another large fruit blocking another pipe at the north end of the stream.
  • Goomba Woods in the north is full of fruit.

16. Love at Peach’s Castle

tourist super mario odyssey

Now that the moat is drained, you can bring the Goombette on the north side of the castle a boyfriend. Hike straight north from the castle down into Goomba Woods. Capture and stack up all of the Goombas there. Walk them all the way back to the north side of the castle, then drop down into the moat to make a love connection.

17. Toad Defender

tourist super mario odyssey

On a ledge above the Goomba Woods, a little to the northeast of Peach’s Castle, there’s a brave Toad guarding a moon in a small alcove. His weakness, though, is Goombas. Drop down into the Woods and capture one or two. Do a wide loop to the east around the pool to return to the Toad. He’ll get out of the way, and you can claim your moon.

18. Forever Onward, Captain Toad!

tourist super mario odyssey

Captain Toad is in this kingdom, too. This time, he’s right on top of the Crazy Cap shop. Use the crates nearby to backflip up and dive onto the roof. Talk to Captain Toad for your moon.

19. Jammin’ in the Mushroom Kingdom

tourist super mario odyssey

Talk to the headphones-wearing Toad just to the west of the Odyssey. He’ll ask to hear some flat-n-blocky classic tunes. Play him something 8-bit from your library to earn your moon.

20. Shopping Near Peach’s Castle

tourist super mario odyssey

Just like every other kingdom, you can grab this moon from the Crazy Cap shop for 100 coins.

21. Mushroom Kingdom Regular Cup and 22. Mushroom Kingdom Master Cup

tourist super mario odyssey

The trick to winning both the regular and master cups in the Mushroom Kingdom is using Rocket Flowers . As you can see in the image above, they’re peppered throughout the course. Just keep grabbing them with Cappy and rocketing toward Peach’s Castle, and you’ll beat the competition.

23. Picture Match: Basically Mario

tourist super mario odyssey

In the northeast corner of the kingdom, there’s a rocket that will take you to this challenge. All you have to do is replace all of Mario’s facial features even though you can’t see them after you place them. Take a close look at the image (and use the image above) to place the correct facial features in roughly the right place. Use the features you can still see — like Mario’s hair or his hat — to help you. You need to get at least 60 points to get your moon.

24. Picture Match: A Stellar Mario!

tourist super mario odyssey

Getting the second power moon from the Picture Match is a lot harder. You don’t get any landmarks this time (like Mario’s sideburns or hat) to help you out. All you get is the outline. It’s intimidating and very frustrating, but it’s doable. The images in the gallery above have some helpful guide lines to get each feature to the right location. But first, and absolutely most importantly, look at the eyes.

tourist super mario odyssey

If you look closely at Mario’s eyes, you’ll see that the iris is off-center. There’s a thin crescent of white on one side and a thicker crescent on the other. The thin crescent goes down. Just getting the eyes right will make your score a lot higher, as you can see in the second and third images above. In fact, getting the eyes on the right sides gives you a lot of wiggle room.

25. Light from the Ceiling

tourist super mario odyssey

As soon as you walk into Peach’s Castle, there’s a sun-themed rug on the floor. Stand in the middle of the rug, then switch to 1st-person view (by clicking the right thumbstick). Look straight up at the ceiling at the glowing light above you. When you get it centered, the moon will pop out and drift down to you.

26. Loose-Tile Trackdown

tourist super mario odyssey

Look for a tile that’s sticking up on the ground floor of Peach’s Castle — it’s between the two sets of stairs on the left. When you ground pound the tile, another will pop up. And another. There are eight tiles total. When you ground pound the last one, you’ll get a moon. Use the image above to guide you to the tiles in order.

27. Totally Classic and 28. Courtyard Chest Trap

tourist super mario odyssey

For these two, you’ll need the Mario 64 Cap and Suit from the Crazy Cap shop — they’ll cost you 35 purple coins. Head to the cliffs between the north side of Peach’s Castle and the Goomba Woods. There’s a Toad watching a locked door — he’ll only let you in if you’re wearing the Mario 64 outfit.

Inside, you’ll find eight chests you have to hit in a certain order. Use the image above to find the correct order. When you hit the eighth chest, you’ll get moon 28.

While you’re here, jump into the fountain in the middle of the room. Spin Cappy on the top of the star to reveal moon 27.

29. Yoshi’s Feast in the Sea of Clouds and 30. Sunken Star in the Sea of Clouds

tourist super mario odyssey

For these two moons, you’ll need Yoshi. Use the scarecrow on the west side of Peach’s Castle to get to the roof where you can find Yoshi’s egg. Once you’ve captured him, head toward the mouth of the stream. There’s a tunnel with a pipe inside. A large piece of fruit blocks access, but Yoshi can (happily) eat it. Enter the pipe to travel to a new challenge area.

You’ll have to recapture Yoshi from the egg provided right there in the entrance area. To earn this area’s moon, you’ll have to eat every piece of fruit in the area.

Before you get started, though, go to the left side of the pipe platform. There are two fruits floating just off the platform. Eat them, then step off of the platform into the clouds. There’s a walkway below you. Use Yoshi’s tongue to clear the clouds, then keep walking forward. When you run out of walkway, moon 30 will be on your left.

Head back to the main area. Collect all of the fruit, and you’ll receive moon 29.

31. Secret 2D Treasure and 32. 2D Boost from Bullet Bill

tourist super mario odyssey

Head to the well on the west side of the kingdom where you collected moon 11. Hop down inside to the 2-D challenge below. The trick to this one is staying in front of the moving dark background (otherwise, you’ll get ejected back into 3-D space and have to start over). You’ll see moon 32 as you make your way through the Bullet Bill-filled area. Use the numerous Bills to give you a boost up to it. Continue through the area to the end to find moon 31.

Power moons 33-38

Mushroom Kingdom power moons 33-38 pit you against all the non-Broodal bosses you’ve faced once again. You access each of these fights via paintings in stone towers scattered around the kingdom. There’s nothing special about these fights — they’re very similar to the first time you fought these bosses, just … more.

33. Tussle in Toastarena: Rematch

tourist super mario odyssey

This tower is on the west side of the kingdom. The rules of the fight against Knucklotec are the same — capture a fist and punch him in the face. This time, you have to avoid Chinchos while doing it.

34. Struggle in Steam Gardens: Rematch

tourist super mario odyssey

This tower is in the Goomba Woods, but it’ll take a little extra work to get to it. Warp to the Goomba Woods flag, then look for a large seed on the ground just to the west. Carry it further west and plant it in the pot. Climb up the vine to find the tower and the painting.

You’ve got a lot more energy waves to avoid in this fight, but it’s still very much the same fight. Whenever possible, get to the middle of the room directly under the Torkdrift — there’s a sweet spot right in the center that is out of reach of all the pulse mines.

35. Dust-Up in New Donk City: Rematch

tourist super mario odyssey

The tower for this fight is on the east side of the kingdom, just south of the hedge maze. This fight is very similar to the first one, but there’s more to shoot. Just keep moving to keep out of reach and keep shooting.

36. Battle in Bubblaine: Rematch

tourist super mario odyssey

The entrance to this fight is the pipe at the bottom of Mushroom Pond. This is a bit of a shift from the first time, but the mechanics work the same. There’s no ground (or sea) beneath you this time, but the rain will keep your Gushen charged. These changes mean the fight is a lot more straightforward. Just use your Gushen to charge in and deal as much damage as you can before Brigadier Mollosque-Lanceur III, Dauphin Of Bubblaine can run away. This time, you don’t have to ground pound his head. You can deal all of the damage from your Gushen.

37. Blowup at Mount Volbono: Rematch

tourist super mario odyssey

The tower for this fight is straight southwest of the Odyssey. This fight against the Cookatiel just has some Moonsnakes to avoid. Beyond that, it’s the same fight.

38. Rumble in Crumbleden: Rematch

tourist super mario odyssey

The entrance to this fight is the pipe on the east side of Peach’s Castle at the bottom of the moat. Drain the moat by pulling the posts, then get to the roof to collect Yoshi. Drop down with Yoshi to eat the fruit blocking the pipe, then head inside. The only change in this fight is that the lightning that lashes out when the dragon drops its head is a lot more intense and wavy — making it harder to avoid.

39. Secret Path to Peach’s Castle!

tourist super mario odyssey

The Secret Path painting that brings you to the Mushroom Kingdom is in the Luncheon Kingdom . Head to the Remote Island in the Lava (in the far northeast), then down the natural steps on the right side of the island. The painting will take you to Yoshi’s House. Use Cappy to put out the fire in the chimney, then wall jump your way up to the top. You’ll find the moon just above the top of the chimney.

40. A Tourist in the Mushroom Kingdom

tourist super mario odyssey

To get this power moon, you need to beat the game and return to the Sand Kingdom . Remember the taxi that’s always been there, just south of the town? Speak to a sombrero-wearing little guy near the taxi, who’ll tell you that he can’t wait to take a ride. Then go to the Metro Kingdom and find him again. Follow him through kingdoms (speaking to him will tell you where he’s going next), and eventually his tour will lead him to the Mushroom Kingdom, right by the Odyssey.

41. Found with Mushroom Kingdom Art

tourist super mario odyssey

This Hint Art is inside of Peach’s Castle, on a wall to the northeast of where you walk in. Travel to the Cap Kingdom and head to the center of town, stopping on the bridge that gets you there. Line up the camera so that the moon is behind the large tower, and then ground pound to reveal this power moon. Check out the gallery above to see exactly what it should look like.

42. Hat-and-Seek: Mushroom Kingdom

tourist super mario odyssey

To the left of the entrance to Peach’s Castle, a Bonneter is fretting. Speak to him, and then head to the northwest of the Mushroom Kingdom. There, between a few trees, you’ll see a Toad wearing a hat that has eyes. Approach from the back and speak to the hat to get this power moon.

43. Princess Peach, Home Again!

tourist super mario odyssey

To the west of Peach’s Castle, you’ll find a scarecrow. Throw Cappy at it, and you’ll reveal a staircase that leads to the castle roof. Walk up, and make your way to the balcony in the front of the castle. (It’s the one in front of the stained glass window.) Speak to Princess Peach, and you’ll receive her final power moon.

If she’s not there, then you haven’t found and spoken to her in every other kingdom. Check your power moon menu for a power moon called “Peach in the [kingdom name] Kingdom.” If you don’t see one, head to that kingdom and find Peach there. Then return to the Mushroom Kingdom, and speak to Peach.

Sand Kingdom

The Sand Kingdom is the third kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey, and the first that allows the player a large degree of freedom in how to approach it. Because none of the story moons are required to exit the kingdom, the player can collect any moons they choose.

First, could you briefly introduce yourselves?

Takashi Tezuka (referred to as Tezuka from this point on): Hello. I'm Takashi Tezuka. I've been involved in 2D Mario (1) games in many ways for a long time, but I joined as the producer for this title. This year marks the 39th year that I've been involved in the development of Mario games.

( 1 ) A term that refers to a side-scrolling 2D platformer in the Super Mario series. In contrast, 3D Mario games refer to Mario platformers in which Mario moves around in a 3D space.

Shiro Mouri (referred to as Mouri from this point on): Hello, I'm Shiro Mouri. I joined as the programming director for New Super Mario Bros. U (2) and the director for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe . For this title, I served as the director again.

( 2 ) A Wii U™ game released in November 2012 in North America and Europe. This side-scrolling 2D platformer offers a unique gameplay experience on the Wii U GamePad, which can be used as a second screen with touch-screen functionality. Yoshis, with various abilities, support their adventure. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Nintendo Switch, which included new characters and New Super Luigi U, was released in January 2019.

Koichi Hayashida (referred to as Hayashida from this point on): Hi! I'm Koichi Hayashida, and I worked on the game design. I've served as a director for games including Super Mario 3D World (3) and as a producer for Super Mario Odyssey (4) and other games. My mission in this project was to apply my experiences from the development of 3D Mario games to a 2D Mario game.

( 3 ) A Wii U game released in November 2013. In this 3D platformer, up to four players can explore the Sprixie Kingdom, a land full of surprises, where new transformations, such as Cat Mario and Double Mario, were introduced. Additional accessories may be required for multiplayer mode. Sold separately. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury , which includes new modes, was released on Nintendo Switch in February 2021.

( 4 ) A Nintendo Switch game released in October 2017. In this 3D platformer, players join Mario and his hat-shaped ally Cappy on a globe-trotting adventure, exploring ancient ruins, big cities, and much more.

Masanobu Sato (referred to as Sato from this point on): Hi, I'm Masanobu Sato, the art director for this game. My first involvement in the development of 2D Mario games was when I created animation for the Koopalings, the bosses in New Super Mario Bros. Wii (5). I've been involved as the design leader since New Super Mario Bros. U.

( 5 ) A Wii™ game released in November 2009 in North America and Europe. In this 2D side-scrolling platformer, new transformations such as Propeller Mario, Ice Mario, and Penguin Mario were introduced.

Koji Kondo (referred to as Kondo from this point on): Hello, I’m Koji Kondo. As the sound director for this title, I was responsible for the approach we took for the sound and for making the final judgment on its quality. I also composed some of the game's music myself. I've been involved in Super Mario games since the first Nintendo Entertainment System (6) game.

( 6 ) A video-game console released in 1985 in North America. It came bundled with two controllers featuring a Control Pad and A and B buttons. Players could swap game cartridges to play a variety of games.

Thank you very much. Mouri-san, could you give us a brief introduction to this new game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

Mouri: Sure. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first entirely new installment in the side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. series in almost 11 years. Whenever you collect the new item, the Wonder Flower, the course and its gameplay transform dramatically, and a variety of "wonders" occur that would've been unimaginable in previous titles in the series.

So it's been almost 11 years since the release of the previous title, New Super Mario Bros. U.

Mouri: Yes. While Super Mario Maker (7), Super Mario Maker 2 , and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe were released after the launch of the previous title, this is the first new 2D Mario game in almost 11 years.

( 7 ) A Wii U game released in September 2015. In this 2D platformer, players can create and play their own courses by combining different parts. The sequel, Super Mario Maker 2, was released on Nintendo Switch in June 2019.

Where did you get the idea for this new game, which has been a long time coming?

Tezuka: I was already thinking about what kind of Mario game we should make next when we were developing Super Mario Maker 2. At the time, some journalists and players were saying that Super Mario Maker had eliminated the need for another 2D Mario game. But I kept saying that the next Mario game would be completely different from Super Mario Maker, so there was no need to worry. In hindsight, those kinds of sentiments may have been what motivated me to come up with ideas for this game.

tourist super mario odyssey

So during Super Mario Maker 2's development, you were already confident that you could create something completely fresh.

Tezuka: Well, yes.

Hayashida: No, no, I wasn't! (Laughs) Players have created so many different courses in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2 that I was worried about whether we could do anything new that would go beyond that. ...But apparently, Tezuka-san thought it would be fine. (Laughs)

Tezuka: I'm an optimist. (Laughs)

Hayashida: Yes, I remember Mouri-san saying during the early stages of development that we shouldn't use the same game engine as in the New Super Mario Bros. series but rather create a new game engine that would serve as a foundation for future 2D Mario games. Thankfully, Tezuka-san also told us to prioritize content over schedule.

Tezuka: We wanted to create a game with much more to offer than ever before, so this time, we didn't set a fixed time period for development, which is usually decided before we kick off. To create something truly enjoyable, we decided to take our time and dedicate ample budget for development without having to worry about the production schedule. So at first, we only had a small group working on the development.

With a small number of people and no set deadline, I imagine the development team felt a bit uneasy. Did you have a clear direction of what you wanted to achieve?

Hayashida: Tezuka-san gave us the task of creating a Mario game full of hidden surprises and wonders.

Mouri: When I think back to the first time I played the original Super Mario Bros. (8) game, I remember feeling that it was full of hidden surprises and wonders. Coins would come out when you hit the blocks, and your body would grow bigger with Super Mushrooms. Back then, everything was new and packed with unexpected delights. However, now that the Super Mario games have been enjoyed by players for many years, those things have somehow become ordinary. That's why Tezuka-san's goal was to create moments that even modern players would find unexpected and wondrous.

( 8 ) A game released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first title in the Super Mario series, which continues today.

Hayashida: What used to be wondrous back then is no longer wondrous today, neither for players nor for us developers.

Mouri: But the reality of coming up with something that would elicit a sense of wonder from a modern audience was quite difficult. We did a lot of prototyping, but because the development team was small then, it took us time to find the core of what we wanted to achieve. Previous 2D Mario games featured variations of challenges that would scale up in difficulty as players progressed. This time, though, we decided not to focus on creating such variations but rather on offering a large number of surprises that we thought would be fun. Frankly speaking, I wanted to include at least one element in each course that would surprise or delight players. So I decided to consult Hayashida-san who had been involved in the development of 3D Mario games and ask him how he included such elements in Super Mario Odyssey .

Hayashida: 3D Mario games are sometimes described by the media and players as a "toy box of ideas," so I decided to apply some of the ideas we used to create 3D Mario games to a 2D Mario game. With these things in mind, we decided to have an idea-sharing session . Everyone from programmers to designers and sound designers joined in and wrote down gameplay ideas on sticky notes, which could be unrelated to their field of expertise, and we made prototypes on the spot. There were just so many ideas. Before this interview, I counted the number of sticky notes we had, and there were over 2,000! (Laughs)

Wow, over 2,000! With so many ideas, could you find the core element you felt was right for this game?

Mouri: Sato-san proposed the idea of players warping to another world by collecting an item. This is what he came up with.

tourist super mario odyssey

Mouri: When I was playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES, I was amazed that you could warp to different places. You could go underground by entering a pipe or go up to the sky by climbing up vines that appear when you hit a block. So I wanted to utilize this idea to create a game with new wonders.

I remember getting really excited about entering a pipe and warping somewhere else. What was Tezuka-san's reaction to that idea?

Mouri: Tezuka-san said, "Warping somewhere else would be no different from previous games. Can't we make it so that the course itself transforms without players having to warp?" I was like, "No, no, how is that even possible?" (Laughs)

Hayashida: I also thought it was asking the impossible to make the course itself move. (Laughs) But then I remembered that we had come up with the idea of twisting and bending the pipes, so we made a prototype, and it turned out to be quite an interesting gameplay mechanic.

Mouri: This got me thinking, let's make huge changes in a way that would have been unimaginable in previous 2D Mario games!

Twisting and bending pipes are certainly things we've not seen in past Super Mario games. Was this how the concept of Wonder started?

Mouri: Yes. We went through a lot of prototyping, and once we finally discovered the "core" of this game, the team became more confident and started to move forward. This is a rather drastic approach, but first, you've got to take everything to the extreme. If you think you've gone too far, you can make adjustments later.

Kondo: I also contributed a lot of suggestions at the idea-sharing session.

You shared ideas too, Kondo-san?

Kondo: Yes. I shared the idea of an eight-heads-tall, life-sized, live-action Mario humming along with the background music as he goes along.

Eight-heads-tall, life-sized Mario?!

Kondo: Yes. When he jumps, he says to himself, "Boing!" ...The idea was never used, though.

Everyone: (Laughs)

Kondo: I felt I had to take the lead in going to the extreme. (Laughs)

Maybe an eight-heads-tall, life-sized Mario was a step too far, but I see how you've expanded the gameplay through trial and error. However, if you take an idea too far, it could break the standards you've established over time for the world of 2D Mario games. Wasn't that a concern from an art-direction perspective?

Sato: Yes, there are some deviations from the rules of the Mario world we've seen in the past. For example, we all know pipes are solid, so we're confident that shells we kick will bounce back if they hit one. We also know that we can safely jump on pipes. Keeping this feeling of trust in a side-scrolling 2D Mario game was crucial.

Then came along the idea of twisting and bending pipes...

Sato: Yes. But we didn't want to give up on an idea that people had spent a lot of energy on, just because it wouldn't fit in and look right. So we took great pains to create a world that could incorporate this idea. We decided to incorporate this major transformation as a mysterious phenomenon called the "Wonder effect" and use unconventional visuals.

Hayashida: From then on, we held Wonder prototype meetings, where we selected ideas from the more-than-2,000 sticky notes and other materials produced in the idea-sharing session and created prototypes that matched the world of Wonder. Various ideas were incorporated into the game as we went along.

Kondo: We were also conscious of this major transformation when creating the sound. To make the sound of activating the Wonder effects more unconventional, we used a lot of up-tempo background music. We also made the environmental sounds and sound effects more dynamic to give a sense of complete change from the regular course. The course background music has also been redesigned. Instead of the analog synthesizer-like (9) sounds used in New Super Mario Bros. (10), we've incorporated the sounds of musical instruments and digital synthesizers (11) to introduce a musical genre that has never been heard in Mario history.

( 9 ) An instrument that synthesizes sounds using electronic circuits. It generates simple sounds like those used in Super NES™ games.

( 10 ) A Nintendo DS™ game released in May 2006. Simple controls using the +Control Pad and two (A and B) buttons are all it takes to experience this side-scrolling 2D action platformer.

( 11 ) An instrument that synthesizes sound by processing sound data digitally using a computer.

Mouri: Looking back, I remember Kondo-san also talking about this “major transformation” in the idea-sharing meeting, even before we aligned on the concept of Wonder effects.

Kondo: Huh? I did?

Mouri: Yes, it was when the idea for Elephant Mario came up. We were experimenting with the water-spraying action and trying out ideas for sprinkling water, and Kondo-san said, “Wouldn't it be better to transform the entire screen more dramatically so that we get heavy rainfall?”

Kondo: Oh yes, I did say that.

Hayashida: I felt that transforming the entire screen fit in well with Tezuka-san's theme of "transformation." There's the world of Mario that Tezuka-san and Kondo-san have in mind, and if you don’t have a clear understanding of their vision, it might seem like they're asking the impossible. However, there is a clear goal at the end.

tourist super mario odyssey

Sato: I’m sure that from the producer’s point of view, he knew that players wouldn’t see much difference if we didn’t do something as drastic as what he'd asked. I believe he didn't want us to do just what we were told but rather to come up with our own ideas that aligned with his vision. I was always thinking about his intent as I worked on the game.

Mouri: In hindsight, "asking the impossible" was exactly what we needed.

Bowser's Kingdom

Bowser's Kingdom is the thirteenth kingdom visited in Super Mario Odyssey . It is the home of Bowser and the greater location of Bowser's Castle . Unlike most games, which feature a Western-European design for his castle, Bowser has constructed a new castle for his wedding with Princess Peach [1] , resulting in a lush, flowering traditional Japanese castle, with a concentric series of walls and baileys, a traditional garden and tea house, and a central keep. Instead of the usual lava , its moats are filled with poison .

At the end of the kingdom, Mario and Cappy must defeat RoboBrood , a giant robot piloted by the Broodals . After defeating the Broodals, Mario and Cappy visit the Moon Kingdom to chase after Bowser and Princess Peach.

Terrifying Gatekeepers

Don't run afoul of the Stairface Ogres that guard this kingdom. When they spot an intruder, they bring their huge mallets down, no questions asked. On the other hand, you have to admire their tenacity and work ethic. The scars on their faces show they don't give up easily.

tourist super mario odyssey

Beautiful Tile Work

This kingdom's architecture is unique. Roofs are made of heavy, layered tiles that will not budge even if walked upon. They also create a uniformity in the overall design, enhancing the beauty of the palace.

Though you can move along the roofs, this palace rests quite high in the sky, and if you fall off, you will most definitely die. It's not the surest footing either, so be careful.

tourist super mario odyssey

Statues Guard the Court

The palace tower highlights the inner citadel, and the gate leading to it is guarded by fearsome statues.

The statues are fashioned after gods of wind and thunder, the perfect motif for a sky palace, and since they are modeled on Bowser, the ruler of this kingdom, they serve as a warning to foes here and abroad.

tourist super mario odyssey

Impressive Fortifications

Surrounding the inner citadel are the second and third courts. The second court is especially fortified, with many cannons to repel invaders. Cannonballs often roll along the ground, and many tourists fall trying to evade them. Legends speak of invaders repelling the cannonballs with spears , but no mere mortal could hope to do this, so try not to get too close!

Checkpoint Flag locations [ edit ]

Odyssey [ edit ].

The Odyssey's location in Bowser's Kingdom

The Odyssey lands in the southwestern corner of the kingdom. Hint Toad and Uncle amiibo are nearby. Mario can throw Cappy onto one of the Bowser heads on the fence behind the Odyssey to spawn a Power Moon. After completing this kingdom's story objectives, Banktoad will appear near the front gate along with a Warp Pipe that leads to the left of the Beneath the Keep checkpoint.

Third Courtyard (Front) [ edit ]

Checkpoint Flag in the Third Courtyard in Bowser's Kingdom

At the start of the area are two torches, a Checkpoint Flag , and two Pokios . Further to the right is an area with some crates, two Spinies , and three ? Blocks . The middle ? Block contains a Heart . If Mario captures a Pokio, he can fling himself to the upper level, where there is another Spiny, some crates, and a spark pylon which leads to Third Courtyard (Rear) . A wall with another Spiny and some regional coins on it can also be found up here; if Mario falls off the right side of this wall, he finds a hidden platform with a Pokio and Power Moon #5, " Behind the Big Wall ".

Names in other languages [ edit ]

Third courtyard (rear) [ edit ].

SMO Bowser's Moon 54.png

This area is reached after leaving Third Courtyard (Front) via a spark pylon. After some stairs, Mario reaches an enclosed area with two Spinies, three ? Blocks, and a rainbow treble clef on the left. The middle ? Block is a Coin Block . Above the middle ? Block is a Hidden Block containing a Heart . If Mario touches the treble clef, Notes appear in the pen. Collecting all of them before time runs out makes Power Moon #18, " Taking Notes: Between Spinies ", appear in place of the treble clef. To the right of the pen are three coin rings over a pit. After that is a Stairface Ogre . Once Mario defeats it, Power Moon #1, " Infiltrate Bowser's Castle! " appears from behind. After collecting this Power Moon, the doors ahead open and stairs rise, taking Mario to an area with crates and a spark pylon which takes him to the Second Courtyard. In the crate section, Mario is able to get up onto the roof, where he can find some regional coins, as well as a Pokio on the side. Mario can capture the Pokio and poke the hole in the middle of the wall to reveal Power Moon #21, " Poking Your Nose in the Plaster Wall ".

After opening the kingdom's Moon Rock , a second rainbow treble clef appears over the roof, on the side of the courtyard. Mario can touch this treble clef for notes to appear on the wall, which he must use a Pokio to collect. After collecting all of the notes in the given time, Power Moon #54, " Taking Notes: On the Wall ", appears for Mario to collect.

Second Courtyard [ edit ]

The Checkpoint Flag in the Second Courtyard in Bowser's Kingdom

The spark pylon at the end of Third Courtyard (Rear) leads here. This area is armed with cannons that fire rolling bombs , which can be used to destroy metal crates by using Cappy to alter their trajectory. The second story mission, Smart Bombing , takes place here, in which Mario must collect five Moon Shards to spawn a Power Moon.

Souvenir Shop [ edit ]

Crazy Cap found in Bowser's Kingdom

This island is in between the Second Courtyard and Main Courtyard Entrance, and it consists of a Crazy Cap surrounded by a small garden. Behind the shop is a small sitting area. A New Donker stands next to a locked door in the back of the shoppe, granting Mario access to a secret area if he is wearing the Samurai Helmet and Samurai Armor.

There are two Jizo statues on the side of the shoppe. Mario may capture one and put it in place with the others in the garden to reveal a Power Moon . He may also break through a cracked stone slab nearby to find a hidden area with a missing Jizo. Once again, getting the Jizo into the correct position reveals a Power Moon. There is then a Warp Pipe taking Mario back to the surface. In the post-game, Princess Peach and Tiara visit this area.

Main Courtyard Entrance [ edit ]

SMO Bowser Brochure D.png

Hariet and Topper are fought in this area. The Checkpoint Flag is on the bridge in the middle. A Jizo statue is installed behind the building on the right. Mario may capture the statue and hop around a bit to find glowing spots have appeared in the ground. Moving the Jizo over these spots often reveals coins , hearts , and possibly a Life-Up Heart . There is a painting behind the building on the left leading to either the Snow Kingdom or Seaside Kingdom depending on the order in which they were visited. Three regional coins may also be found atop this building. There are two large, round platforms on either side of the large, golden Bowser Statues . Mario must fight Topper on the platform on the right and Hariet on the platform on the left. Defeating both of them reveals a Power Moon between the platforms Mario must collect to complete the mission and open up a bridge to the Main Courtyard.

After this kingdom's Moon Rock has been cracked open, a few additional Power Moons become available in this area. Mario may return to where Topper was fought to find Yoofoe , which must be defeated to earn a Power Moon. A lock also appears near the spark pylon here, in front of the flags floating nearby. Mario may grab on and use them as flagpoles to reach a key he must collect to unlock this Power Moon. The final Power Moon involves collecting all of the notes that appear over the platform on which Hariet was previously fought. Collecting them all in the limited time awards Mario this Power Moon.

Main Courtyard [ edit ]

The Checkpoint Flag in the Main Courtyard in Bowser's Kingdom

This Checkpoint Flag is right beyond the door that opens after fighting Hariet and Topper. The kingdom's Moon Rock and Hint Art are found here. Up ahead is a bridge leading to the main part of the castle, where Mario must capture Pokios and scale walls while dodging bombs.

Outer Wall [ edit ]

SMO Bowser's Moon 14.png

This Checkpoint Flag is found right after getting past the bombs in the Main Courtyard. Up ahead is a Stairface Ogre guarding a tall wall with rotating circles that Mario must scale with a captured Pokio. Nearby metal crates, one of which contains a Power Moon, can be broken by having the Stairface Ogre crush them.

Inner Wall [ edit ]

The Checkpoint Flag in the Inner Wall in Bowser's Kingdom

This Checkpoint Flag is at the top of the Outer Wall. Up ahead is another Pokio wall, this one featuring horizontally sliding rectangular panels and columns of spikes Mario must avoid.

Beneath the Keep [ edit ]

SMO Bowser's Moon 11.png

At the top of the Inner Wall, Mario will find a Checkpoint Flag on a bridge over a pool of poison. Talkatoo is found here, as is the leader of the Roving Racers later on. Up ahead is a spark pylon that takes Mario to the roof of a Tenshu with a massive golden model of Bowser's head within it. This is where Mario encounters Bowser and initiates the battle with RoboBrood over the arena.

Though most of the area surrounding the Checkpoint Flag is surrounded by poison, there are a few additional Power Moons as well as regional coins Mario can pick up. One of the buildings near the keep has a frame with Japanese writing. Mario must throw Cappy at it to knock it down, making the Power Moon appear. Another building in this area has a scarecrow initiating a timer challenge over the poison. Lakitu can also be found in this area, and may be used to "fish" in the poison moat. Reeling in the largest fish reveals Poochy , and subsequently, a Power Moon.

Showdown Arena [ edit ]

Bowser's Kingdom [ edit ]

Bowser's castle [ edit ], trivia [ edit ].

  • Many ornaments strewn throughout the kingdom, such as the nobori and the chōchin , contain the kanji 寿 ( kotobuki ), which means "long life". Some chōchin additionally contain the compound 空覇 (can also be read as kuppa , Bowser's Japanese name), literally meaning "celestial supremacy". Put together, the kanji translates as "Long live King Bowser!"
  • The kingdom's industry (hanafuda cards) may be a reference to Nintendo's origins as a card company.
  • The Bowser statues seen during the boss battles against Topper and Hariet are based on the Japanese gods Fūjin , the god of winds, and Raijin , the god of thunder, respectively.
  • While capturing a spark pylon in this kingdom, the sound it makes to the music is replaced by koto samples to reflect its Japanese theme. Additionally, if specific music is played in the Music List , the sound will slow down.
