7 Best Things To Do In Japan During The Autumn & Winter Seasons

With Japan opening up to tourists again, it is no surprise that many of us are hurriedly booking flights to Tokyo , Osaka, and Hokkaido . It’s been a while since any of us has traveled to Japan during the autumn and winter seasons, so we’ve put together a helpful travel guide on all the sights, attractions, and experiences you should check out - from the breathtaking fall foliage in Kyoto to the magical winter wonderland that is Shirakawago !

#1 Kyoto: Picturesque scenery and dress up in a kimono

Arashiyama Morning Walking Tour with Sagano Romantic Train in Kyoto.

Kyoto is beautiful in all seasons, but it is especially stunning during autumn when all of its foliage takes on majestic hues of red and gold. You can easily spend a full day here just soaking in the sights, and make sure not to miss iconic locations such as Arashiyama, the bamboo groves, and the Tenryuji, a UNESCO-listed Zen monastery. Better still, book a walking tour ($82 on Klook ) which includes an English-speaking guide and a romantic train ride through the Hozukyo Ravine!

Lovely Kimono Experience in Kyoto.

To truly immerse yourself in the fall experience, try exploring Kyoto in a rented kimono! Here’s a highly-rated one that we found ($42 on Klook ), and comes with free hairstyling services and locker storage.

#2 Kyoto: Soak in an onsen

Fu Fu No Yu Onsen in Kyoto.

After soaking in the sights, it’s time to soak in an onsen. You’d definitely need it after a day of walking around Kyoto! Contrary to popular belief, a Japanese onsen experience can be very affordable. In fact, we found one on Klook for less than $10! According to the reviews, Fu Fu No Yu Onsen boasts clean facilities and has open-air baths, a sauna, a steam room, a cold plunge bath, and a small zen garden.

#3 Tokyo & Osaka: Experience the Halloween festivities

Tokyo Disney Resort Park.

Trust us when we say that the Halloween festivities in Japan are next-level. If you’re in Tokyo, don’t miss the street parties happening in Roppongi Hills, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro, where you’ll find everyone dressed in the most elaborate costumes. And of course, you have to drop by Tokyo Disneyland for its annual Halloween event (happening from now till 31 Oct), where there’ll be Halloween-themed performances, merchandise, food, and drinks!

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Japan.

And if you’re in Osaka, don’t miss out on Universal Studio Japan’s Halloween Horror Nights (happening from now till 6 Nov). This year’s iteration returns with a bang and features 3 immersive horror mazes, 1 horror theatre show, 1 zombie area, 1 horror-themed ride, and of course, plenty of special performances. If you’re not a fan of horror, do still visit Universal Studio Japan during the day for the newest SUPER NINTENDO WORLD that was just opened last year!

#4 Mount Gozaisho: Red maple trees in autumn and frosted trees in winter

Nabana no Sato & Osaka Maple Viewing Day Tour.

Just an hour away from Nagoya, Mount Gozaisho is a must-visit spot for nature lovers. You’d get to see red maple leaves in the fall, and come year-end, the entire area landscape transforms into a winter wonderland, with pristine white snow and intricate layers of frost adorning the bare trees.

The best way to admire the scenery? Take a leisurely cable car ride up to the peak of Mount Gozaisho, of course! Here’s a super value-for-money sightseeing tour ($124 on Klook ) that includes admission to the Gozaisho Ropeway, Nabana no Sato Flower Park (which lights up at night during the winter season), and Begonia Garden. Plus, it comes with a luxurious Sukiyaki beef set for lunch!

Book a Nabana no Sato & Osaka Maple Viewing Day Tour on Klook here .

#5 Hokkaido: Blue pond in Biei, Farm Tomita & Asahiyama Zoo

Asahiyama Zoo, Hokkaido.

Traveling with your family? Then here are 3 must-visit tourist spots in Hokkaido that will appeal to both the young and old! First up is Asahiyama Zoo, where in winter, you’d get to see polar bears, tigers, and wolves frolicking in their snowy habitats. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the famous penguin walk, which happens twice a day at 11am and 2:30pm during the winter season, which allows you to observe these playful birds up close!

Biei Blue Pond, Hokkaido.

Next is the Biei Blue Pond, where the waters are a striking shade of electric blue. It is truly a sight to behold in real life and makes for a whimsical photo spot - especially with the soft powdery snow in winter.

Farm Tomita, Hokkaido.

Make your final stop at Farm Tomita, which is famed for its lavender and rainbow flower fields. Of course, the whole farm is covered in a blanket of white snow during winter, but the view is equally breathtaking. And don’t worry, you can still catch a whiff of fresh lavender in Farm Tomita’s greenhouse, no matter the season.

These 3 attractions are doable in a day, but they’re quite some distance from each other so we’d recommend driving. Alternatively, you can book a fuss-free day tour! This one on Klook ($75) covers all 3 spots and has gotten good reviews on how it didn’t feel too rushed.

Book a Asahiyama Zoo, Biei Blue Pond & Farm Tomita Day Trip In Hokkaido on Klook here .

#6 Gifu: Takayama Old Town and Shirakawa-go

Takayama & Shirakawa-go Day Trip From Nagoya.

If you’ve been to Japan a few times before and would like to explore outside of the usual cities, try this day trip ($70 on Klook , available to book only from Feb onwards) which will take you to the more rural areas of Takayama and Shirakawa-go.

Takayama is an old town that has retained most of its traditional architecture, with some buildings dating as far back as 200 to 300 years ago! While you’re there, don’t forget to try some Hida beef - Hida beef comes from cattle raised in the Gifu prefecture (where Takayama is), and is said to be more tender and have a sweeter flavour compared to other types of wagyu beef.

Takayama & Shirakawa-go Day Trip From Nagoya.

After a couple of hours in Takayama, head on down to the quaint village of Shirakawa-go. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the small village is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses with sloping roofs. It is said that these roofs resemble hands that are clasped in prayer, and during winter, these houses are covered in a blanket of snow, making the entire landscape even more mesmerising.

#7 Jigokudani Monkey Park: Watch monkeys enjoying an onsen in winter

Jigokudani Monkey Park.

Located in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, Jigokudani is well-known for its large population of wild Japanese macaques. When there’s snowfall - and especially during the cold winter months - the monkeys would come out in droves to soak in the natural onsen. This adorable sight will definitely be a highlight of your Japan trip!

The Jigokudani Monkey Park will take about an hour to cover, so definitely plan to visit some other attractions around the area. This guided tour we found ($148 on Klook ) includes a sumptuous buffet lunch with a view to fuel you for the trek to the monkey park and concludes with a visit to the nearby Shiga Kogen Roman Museum.

Japan Welcomes You

Is Klook Legit? Reviews & Tips For Your Booking

  • Booking Companies

As an avid traveler, I’m always on the lookout for the best deals on flights, hotels, and activities. One platform that I’ve come across is Klook, which offers a wide range of travel experiences at competitive prices. But with so many online travel agencies out there, it’s important to know if Klook is a legitimate platform that travelers can trust.

Klook is no doubt a popular travel booking platform that offers a wide range of activities, tours, and travel services.

But the question remains: is Klook legit?

In this comprehensive review, we’ll take a closer look at the platform to help you decide if it’s a trustworthy option for your travel needs.

What is Klook?

Klook is an online travel booking platform that was founded in 2014. The platform offers a variety of services, including tours, activities, transportation, and attraction tickets, in over 300 destinations around the world. The company is based in Hong Kong and has offices in 13 countries.

How Does Klook Work?

Klook works by partnering with local tour operators, activity providers, and transportation companies to offer a variety of services to travelers. Customers can browse the platform’s offerings, read reviews and ratings from other travelers, and book their chosen activity or service online. Once a booking is confirmed, customers will receive a voucher or e-ticket that they can present to the service provider.

With the rise of online travel booking platforms, it can be difficult to know which ones are legitimate and which ones are scams. Klook is a popular travel booking platform that offers a wide range of activities, tours, and travel services.

My Personal Experience with Klook

I’ve used Klook for several trips in Japan, including booking tickets for theme parks, transportation, and tours. My personal experience with the platform has been overwhelmingly positive. The booking process is straightforward, and the prices are often cheaper than booking directly through the attraction or transport provider.

I was able to save time and money by booking everything in advance, which made my trip more enjoyable. Additionally, the mobile app was very convenient to use and had all the information I needed in one place. Overall, I highly recommend using Klook for anyone planning a trip to Japan.

Another thing I appreciate about Klook is the transparent pricing. The platform clearly states what is included in the price and what isn’t, so there are no surprises when you arrive at the attraction or board your transport. Additionally, Klook offers a Best Price Guarantee, which ensures that you get the best price for your activity or experience.

Booking JR Rail Passes with Klook

One of the best ways to explore Japan is by train, and the JR Rail Pass is a popular option for travelers. I’ve booked the JR Rail Pass through Klook multiple times, and the process has been seamless.

The pass was delivered to my hotel or residence, and I was able to start using it right away. I appreciated the convenience and cost savings of having it shipped to me before traveling and the cost was cheaper than buying passes directly from the Japan Railways Group once arriving in Japan.

With Klook, you can easily purchase the JR Pass online and receive a voucher that can be exchanged for the actual pass upon arrival in Japan.

Note: If you are getting your pass shipped to you, make sure to order early to give yourself enough time to receive it.

Booking Hotels with Klook

In addition to booking experiences, Klook also offers hotel reservations. This looks to be a new addition to their lineup and I haven’t used Klook to book hotels as I usually go with booking.com which has now expanded its reach in Japan and more often than not offers the best price.

Is Klook a Travel Agency?

Klook is considered an online travel agency, which means that it offers a wide range of travel-related products and services. The platform partners with attractions, transportation providers, and hotels to offer travelers competitive prices and a one-stop shop for their travel needs. As a travel agency, Klook is regulated by the appropriate government agencies and must meet certain standards for consumer protection and safety.

Is Klook Legit?

Yes, Klook is a legitimate travel booking platform. The company has a strong reputation in the travel industry and has received positive reviews from customers around the world. In addition, Klook has partnered with reputable travel brands and operators to offer a wide range of services to travelers.

Is it Safe to Book on Klook?

Based on my personal experience, I believe that it is safe to book on Klook. The platform uses secure payment methods and partners with reputable travel providers. Klook also offers a 24/7 customer service hotline, which is helpful if you encounter any issues with your booking. Additionally, the platform has a robust review system, which allows travelers to leave feedback on their experiences. This transparency helps ensure that other travelers can make informed decisions about their bookings.

Using Klook in Japan

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, Klook can be a good site for booking activities, tours, and transportation. The platform offers what is probably the largest range of tickets. Some of the benefits of using Klook in Japan include:

  • Easy-to-use platform with clear descriptions and pricing
  • Most tickets have a lot of reviews that are often helpful to read
  • Option to purchase JR Pass and other transportation passes
  • Some really good Discounted prices on popular activities and attractions
  • Customer support is highly rated.

When using Klook in Japan, be sure to check the terms and conditions for each activity or tour. Some options may have specific requirements, such as minimum age or height, or may be subject to cancellation due to weather or other factors.

It’s also important to double-check the dates, times, and meeting points for each booking to avoid any confusion or delays.

One time, I accidentally booked the wrong type of rail pass, but Klook’s customer service team was quick to respond and helped me resolve the issue in no time. They were professional and friendly, and I appreciated how efficient they were in addressing my concerns.

Pros of Using Klook

There are several benefits to using Klook for your travel needs:

  • Wide range of services: Klook offers a wide variety of tours, activities, transportation, and attraction tickets in over 300 destinations around the world.
  • Easy to use: The platform is user-friendly and easy to navigate, making it easy to book your travel services.
  • Competitive pricing: Klook often offers discounted prices on tours and activities, making it a budget-friendly option for travelers.
  • Convenience: By booking through Klook, travelers can save time and hassle by booking all their travel services in one place.

Cons of Using Klook

While Klook is a legitimate and convenient travel booking platform, there are some potential drawbacks to keep in mind:

  • Not always the cheapest option: While Klook often offers competitive pricing, it’s not always the cheapest option for every service.
  • Service limitations: Klook’s offerings are limited to the services that the platform has partnerships with, so travelers may not be able to find every service they need on the platform.
  • Language barriers: Some of Klook’s partners may not speak English fluently, which could cause communication issues for non-native speakers.

Customer Reviews of Klook

Klook has received generally positive reviews from customers around the world. On Trustpilot, a popular review website, Klook has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on over 15,000 reviews. Customers praise Klook for its ease of use, competitive pricing, and wide range of offerings. However, some customers have noted issues with service providers not being aware of their Klook bookings, and others have reported difficulties with cancellations and refunds.

Where is Klook Based?

Klook is a Hong Kong-based travel platform that offers a wide range of services to travelers around the world. Since its founding in 2014, Klook has expanded its offerings to include attractions, tours, transportation, and hotel bookings in destinations across Asia, Europe, and North America.

While Klook is based in Hong Kong, the company has a global presence with offices in more than 10 countries and a team of over 2,000 employees. With its user-friendly platform and extensive selection of travel services, Klook has become a popular choice for travelers seeking convenient and affordable options for their trips.

Klook is often referred to as an online travel agency, but it is not technically a travel agency in the traditional sense. Instead, Klook is a travel booking platform that connects travelers with a wide range of travel products and services, including attraction tickets, tours, activities, transportation, and more.

Klook partners with various travel operators and service providers to offer its users a comprehensive range of travel products, but it does not typically offer bespoke travel planning or other services that are often associated with traditional travel agencies.

That said, Klook does offer helpful features like user reviews, detailed descriptions, and customer support, which can be invaluable when planning and booking a trip.

After using Klook for multiple trips in Japan, I can confidently say that it is a legitimate platform that travelers can trust. The prices are competitive, the booking process is straightforward, and the platform offers a wide range of experiences and services.

The booking process was simple and straightforward, with instant confirmation and e-tickets delivered straight to my email. The prices were even sometimes more affordable than booking directly through the activity provider or on-site (I’m looking at you Sanpuroland!).

During my travels to Japan, I found Klook to be an excellent resource for booking activities and experiences such as a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto to a day trip from Tokyo to Mount Fuji and each experience has been smooth and hassle-free. The process of booking is straightforward and easy to navigate, and I have always received my e-voucher within a few hours of making the purchase.

Applying Promo Codes

Who doesn’t love a good discount? Klook offers various promo codes that you can apply during the checkout process. Remember, each booking allows the usage of only one promo code, which can be selected from your Klook wallet or entered manually; some promo codes might also have a minimum spend requirement.

Before proceeding to payment, it’s essential to:

  • Check the promo code’s validity
  • Ensure the correct discount has been applied
  • Double-check the cart before completing checkout to ensure all details are correct and that any promo codes or Klook credits are applied at this stage.

Payment Options and Security

Once your cart is ready, it’s time to make the payment. Klook supports a wide range of payment options, including:

  • Major credit and debit cards like Visa, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, and Union Pay
  • E-wallets and mobile payment services like Apple Pay, Google Pay
  • Multiple other region-specific options, such as Line Pay, JKOPAY, GrabPay, and Alipay

Your transactions are secure with Klook, thanks to encryption technology. And the best part? There are no service fees charged for any transactions made on Klook, and the platform supports bookings in 41 different currencies to cater to global users.

Maximizing Klook Credits and Rewards

As you navigate through Klook, you will find more Klook rewards waiting for you. Klook users can earn and redeem credits for discounts on future bookings through bookings, reviews, and referrals.

Are you excited to know more about this? Let’s dive in!

Earning Klook Credits

Every activity you book and complete on Klook translates into Klook credits. After experiencing an activity, you can earn additional Klook credits by leaving a review, with bonus credits available for those including photos in their review. Through the Klook referral program, you receive credits each time you successfully refer a friend.

Accumulated Klook credits can be redeemed for discounts on future bookings. The conversion rate is 10 Klook credits to 1 Hong Kong Dollar, subject to the prevailing exchange rate. What an excellent way to earn while you travel!

Redeeming Klook Credits

Now that you’ve earned Klook credits, it’s time to redeem them! Klook credits never expire as long as a purchase is made at least once every 12 months. You can use at least 10 Klook credits for discounts by selecting the ‘Klook Credits’ checkbox under the ‘Discounts’ section during the booking checkout process.

Klook credits can offset the cost of most bookings on the platform, except for Klook Passes, which cannot be purchased with credits. So, are you ready to start earning and redeeming Klook credits?

Managing Your Klook Vouchers and Tickets

Once you’ve made your bookings, you may wonder how to manage your Klook vouchers and tickets. We’ve got you covered! You can access your Klook vouchers and tickets via email, the Klook app, or by logging into your Klook account on the website.

Accessing Your Vouchers

After completing a booking, you will receive an email with your order summary, followed by a confirmation email containing the Klook voucher(s). The voucher comes with instructions on how to use it, which can be found in the confirmation email and under the ‘How To Redeem’ section of the activity page.

You can also access your vouchers by managing your bookings on the Klook website or app or the mobile app under ‘Mine’ > ‘Vouchers’.

Redeeming Your Tickets

Now that you have your vouchers, it’s time to redeem your train tickets. Klook offers a mobile voucher redemption process, which includes steps for exchanging a mobile voucher for physical tickets if necessary. Specific activities, like the Taoyuan Airport MRT, have detailed instructions for voucher redemption, such as redeeming the mobile voucher at airport service counters.

To ensure successful service or product redemption, follow the instructions in the confirmation email or under the ‘How To Redeem’ section on the activity’s Klook page.
