One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights is the Nine Arch Bridge in the small mountain town of Ella. This viewpoint offers spectacular panoramas of the surrounding area, which is made up of verdant greenery and tea fields.

Visitors can watch trains roll over the bridge as they make their way along the Demodara Loop. Constructed in the early days of the railway expansion in Sri Lanka, the bridge is particularly impressive because it is made of cement, stone and brick, without the use of any steel.

Mihintale is a mountain near the town of Anuradhapura. Its summit has much spiritual significance to the Buddhist community. It’s believed that on this mountain top a Buddhist monk named Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and together this meeting introduced Buddhism to the country.

Monk Mahinda impressed the King with the peacefulness of the Buddhist doctrine and his contented, serene nature. The King subsequently renounced war, and went on to spread peace throughout the nation. There are several impressive religious and historical structures on and around Mihintale Mountain. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the site each year.

This white sand beach in the small seaside town of Unawatuna is a great place to relax. There are a number of snorkeling and diving operators in town who take advantage of the abundance of coral reefs just off the beach.

Colorful fish and plentiful turtles are the norm in these waters. There are a number of great dining options along the beach, which welcome visitors to use their sun loungers and relax the day away with a drink in hand.

Visitors can find Gal Viharaya in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Gal Viharaya is a famous Buddhist site and is celebrated for its many caves and large sculptures of Buddha which are carved into the rock faces. They are extremely well preserved, even though they were crafted in the 12th century.

To the side of one of the statues, a code of conduct is inscribed. The code, when followed, was meant to purify the Buddhist monks and bring them together under one order. It was created by a very famous king: King Parakramabahu the first. Today, Gal Viharaya is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular sites of pilgrimage.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Festival takes place every year in July or August and is dedicated to one of the Hindu gods. It takes place over a two-week period and people from all over the world come to join in.

The festival is jam-packed with parades of elephants and colorfully dressed performers. There are countless traditional dances that take place; with musicians, acrobats, and fire-breathers feeding into the festival’s contagious energy.

There are few places in the world where elephant sightings are so frequent. However, elephants are not the only animals to see within Udawalawe National Park; peacocks, jackals, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys and deer also roam the area.

Safaris are most popular in the early morning hours when animals are at their most active. The biodiversity of the park can be attributed to its varied landscape; it is flanked by mountain ranges to the north with wetlands and rivers hugging the grasslands and forests at the base of the mountains.

The beautiful Ravana Falls are used for bathing in the hot summer months. In the rainy season, the water flow is exceptionally strong and is an impressive sight. The falls are part of the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, and the nearby cave complex is rich in local legend.

Conveniently located on the main road on the way to Ella town, the caves are a common stop off point for visitors during their journey. Many cheeky monkeys live in the surrounding trees and they are often seen on the roadside dining on fruit. However, don’t let them get too close, as sometimes they can get over-friendly with visitors.

8. Dambulla Cave Temple [SEE MAP]

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a sacred Buddhist site. There is no entry fee to get into the temple on full-moon days; however, these days are especially busy because of the religious significance of this lunar phase. Devotees from all over the world make pilgrimage to this place.

There are over 80 caves documented in the area, but the most famous five are outfitted with impressive statues and paintings. Some of the caves date back to 1000 BC, when prehistoric Sri Lankans would have lived within them, so it is unsurprising that they would have created temples inside at that time. If you do plan to visit, please be aware that visitors must cover their shoulders and legs and remove shoes before entering the temple.

Mirissa is the ultimate Sri Lankan beach getaway. The beautiful long beach is flanked by tall overhanging palm trees and lined with modern restaurants and hotels. The restaurants have western style food at Sri Lankan prices. Just off the beach is Parrot Rock. It has a small staircase leading to the top that offers great views of the ocean and coastline.

Day trips from Mirissa include whale watching, snorkeling and surfing. Weligama, just a few kilometers from Mirissa, is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka to learn surfing. Come happy hour and into the evening, many the restaurants turn their venues into beach clubs and pump out drinks and tunes.

Arugam Bay is revered by surfers. This small town on the east coast of Sri Lanka embodies the quintessential laid-back surf lifestyle. The Main Point surf break is within walking distance from the town center, but is only recommended for advanced or intermediate surfers.

Otherwise, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm are two great surf beaches for beginner and intermediate surfers; a short tuk-tuk ride will take you there. Often elephants and peacocks can be spotted beside the road, just outside of town. The main strip in Arugam Bay town is lined with restaurants and hotels where you can dine on anything from traditional Sri Lankan curry to full English breakfasts.

5. Temple of the Tooth [SEE MAP]

The Temple of the Tooth is a highly sacred place. The temple contains one of Buddha’s teeth. Legend has it that the tooth was taken from the Buddha on his deathbed, then smuggled to Sri Lanka from India. It was smuggled in the hair of a princess, after her father’s kingdom had been besieged.

It immediately became an object of great importance and has been celebrated and paraded throughout history. However, many attempts have also been made to steal or destroy the tooth. Twice daily, pujas are held to celebrate the relic and offer visitors and devotees the chance to get a glimpse of the tooth within its casing.

4. Adam's Peak [SEE MAP]

At the summit of Adam’s Peak is a footprint cast in stone. It has spiritual significance to a number of different religions, however, there is currently a Buddhist monastery at the summit. To the Buddhists, the footprint is that of Buddha’s; to Christians, the footprint is Adam’s; and to Hindus, the footprint is attributed to Shiva.

The site is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights. The trek to the top of the mountain to see the footprint is via a steep staircase containing over 5000 steps. The trail is lined with many tea stalls and food shops which act as places of rest. Most people begin their hike at 2:30 am to reach the summit in time for sunrise.

It is easy to get lost in the cobblestoned alleyways and streets within Galle Fort. Today the area is full of modern restaurants, hotels, clothing, and souvenir shops. Meanwhile, snake charmers and buskers line the seawall.

However, the fort was not always such a cosmopolitan spot. A basic fort was constructed by the Portuguese when they made their first landing to the island in 1505. When the Dutch eventually seized control of Galle , they made a number of improvements; including the enormous sea wall that still lines the fort. Galle Fort is an excellent example of what the synthesis between European and Asian architecture looks like.

Yala National Park is made up of spellbinding vistas and a true abundance of Sri Lankan wildlife. It has the highest density of leopards in the world, so chances of seeing them are very high.

Although leopards are the main attraction here, they are followed closely by elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. The park is divided into five blocks; some of which were zoned to hunters until Yala became a national park in 1938. Ensure you make time to visit the very informative visitor center at the entrance of the park for insightful displays about the area.

Sigiriya Rock Fort is utterly impressive. The rock walls rise up 200 meters from the ground, only to give way to a flat plateau at their summit. There are steep stairwells to reach the top and many frescos to marvel at on the way up. At the top, you can find the remains of an ancient civilization, including relics of a palace and monastery.

It would have taken true engineering ingenuity to build a structure at this height so many centuries ago. Around the rock fort are many important caves and gardens; impressively, they are some of the first landscaped gardens in the world.

Sri Lanka is one of our favourite countries, and part of that appeal lies in just how much it has to offer on such little territory.

For a country, roughly the same size as Ireland, this small little island nation boasts an endless array of attractions; white beaches and pumping surf , lush tropical jungle and misty mountain towns , ancient World Heritage sites where elephants and leopards still roam, and enchanting train rides through rolling tea plantations.

To this day we're still amazed that a simple rope swing could have single-handedly turned a country into a travel 'hot spot', yet that's exactly what happened here in Sri Lanka.

Thanks to a couple of well-known travel instagrammers, the rope swings on the southern coast went viral on Instagram and before long every single visitor to the country wanted 'that shot'.

Although a little gimmicky, it really is a heap of fun and, considering the location and stunning tropical setting, is definitely one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka! The best rope swings are located at Dalawella beach and Mihiripenna beach, just south of Unawatuna, although others can be found all the way along the coast.

#2 hike to the top of sri lanka, adam’s peak (sri pada).

Watching the sun rise from the peak of Sri Pada, or Adam's Peak on the cusp of the Sinhalese New Year, remains one of our defining travel moments. 

After climbing the leg-burning 5,500 stairs to the summit, we waited for dawn to approach surrounded by hundreds of pilgrims from all religions. The nearby hill country slowly came into vision, before the sky turned all shades of pink, orange and finally blue. Pilgrims chanted, bells tolled, and tears were shed. 

Rising from the famous rolling hills of Sri Lanka's hill country, the summit of Sri Pada (Adam's Peak), is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the country. It's also home to myth and legend for Buddhist, Islamic, Hindi and Christian faiths; the summit is said to be home to Buddha's footprint, where Adam set foot on Earth after being cast out of heaven, and Shiva's footprint. 

No matter whether you're religious or not, hiking to the top of Sri Pada, or Adam's Peak, is definitely one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka.

#3 LEARN TO SURF IN WELIGAMA

The whole southern coast of Sri Lanka is a surfer’s paradise; awesome breaks at just about every corner attract sliders from all over the world. 

For beginner surfers like us (we know, we’re terrible Australians!), it's also a great place to learn, with warm waters, cheap boards and easy waves the perfect combination to catch that first wave.

The best place to learn to surf along the coast is Weligama, located around 2.5 hours south of Colombo or 30 minutes from the popular town of Unawatuna . Built for surfers, there are hundreds of surf schools located right on the beach - just turn up, speak to a tout and you’ll be learning your way around a board just a few minutes later. 

A 1 - 1.5 hour lesson costs around LKR 2,500 per person, and will teach you the basics of surfing including how to stand up, paddling for a wave, surfing etiquette, and safety. Somehow, we both managed to stand within our first five waves, and the thrill was incredible. We're now 100% converted to surfing. 

If Weligama isn't your jam, you can learn to surf in many places on the south and east coast, including Unawatuna , Hiriketiya , and Arugam Bay. 

After a surf, go a hang out with the legends at Ceylon Sliders , a boutique hotel-cum-cafe-cum-surf store celebrating surf culture in Sri Lanka. They happen to have some of the best food in Sri Lanka, as well as the coolest staff we've ever met.

#4 ADMIRE THE STUNNING NINE ARCH BRIDGE, ELLA

It's weird to think that a bridge could become such an important place to visit in Sri Lanka, yet the Nine Arch Bridge just outside of Ella is exactly that. 

Flanked by verdant forests and tea plantations, the Nine Arch Bridge stands proudly across the valley below. Calling it picturesque would be doing it an understatement, particularly on a misty day when the cloud hangs low in the valley and creates a moody, mystical scene.

Completed in 1921, Nine Arch Bridge is built entirely out of brick, rock and cement, with no metal used in its construction - an incredible engineering feat back in those days. Spanning 91 meters and a height of 24 feet, the bridge is on the famous Kandy to Bandarawela (via Ella) train line , with trains passing around five times a day depending on the ever-changing Sri Lankan train timetable. 

There are plenty of epic viewpoints to see the bridge from. The most popular is the actual bridge itself, another is below from the tea plantation (this is private land, so please ask for permission before entering).

For us, the best views were from above, either looking from the forests surrounding the bridge or from one of the cafe platforms in the surrounding hills. Watching the train slowly make its way across the bridge is a wonderful sight!

#5 hike to the top of ella rock.

High in Sri Lanka's hill country lies Ella , a formerly sleepy town that’s now one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka because of its natural beauty and epic hiking. 

One of the best things to do in Ella is the famous Ella rock hike, which offers spectacular views over Ella, Little Adam's Peak, and the surrounding jungle-clad valley. 

We started our hike at the famous Ella train station, following the Ella to Kandy train line past many beautiful waterfalls, bridges, tea plantations, and homes, before starting our ascent towards the Ella Rock summit, king coconut in hand for some extra energy. We needed it; the hike to the summit is tough!

We sat at the summit for at least an hour, enjoying a vegetarian roti and some well-deserved water while taking in the incredible views.

The route to the summit can be a little complicated, however if you follow the clearly marked paths and ignore the touts, you shouldn't have too many issues (this in-depth post will help you get there). 

All up, the hike takes around 2 hours roundtrip, but remember to pack enough water and snacks to power your journey as the days can get quite hot.

#6 diyaluma falls.

We know, we know, there’s a famous song telling you not to chase waterfalls, but you’re going to need to ignore that advice here as Sri Lanka's second tallest waterfall, Diyaluma, is impressive beyond words.

Cascading from high in the Sri Lankan mountains, Diyaluma falls may be a little off the beaten track, but the epic views and natural infinity pools make the trek worth the effort. After a two-hour tuk tuk ride from Ella to Poonagala, through quintessentially Sri Lankan tea plantations, we set off on foot, hiking downhill through long, dry grass for around 30mins before getting our first glimpse of the upper Diyaluma falls. 

A short walk further and there we were, standing at the lower Diyaluma Falls, above a sheer 220m rush of water to the valley floor below. We watched the sun set over the valley below from top of the falls, joined by a group of young local guys keen to chat about our travels (and cricket, of course!).

We flew our drone, snapped a few insta-bangers, and relaxed before reluctantly commencing our journey back to Ella.

#7 WATCH THE SUNSET FROM LITTLE ADAM’S PEAK, ELLA

Over the last few years, Ella has grown from sleepy hill town to one of Sri Lanka’s best places to visit, and it's not hard to understand why; the steep mountain ranges, unique natural beauty and incredible views make it very popular with tourists.

One of the most popular short hikes in the area is to the top of Little Adam's Peak. A golden afternoon we spent watching the world go by from Little Adam's peak was one of the highlights of our time in Sri Lanka on our first trip to the island in 2016.

The full hike takes about two hours from Ella town and starts in the lush tea plantations before slowly snaking its way to the first set of viewpoints. From here you'll have 360-degree views overlooking the giant Ella Rock and green valley towards Udawalawe , perfect for photos.

We'd definitely advise continuing the hike further down the ridge, as the views become more spectacular and less busy. Here, we sat and relaxed in the grass, eating our lunch while watching storm clouds form in the distance.

The return route follows the other side of the mountain, overlooking the incredible 98 Acres resort before slowly making its way back to Ella. Stop on the return journey back to relax and grab a refreshing king coconut or juice from the little wooden hut near the start of the trek!. 

We recommend hiking up during late afternoon and before watching glorious sunset unfold; and advise against hiking during the middle of the day as there's little shade to hide from the glaring sun (fun fact: our worst sunburns in 3 months of travel through Asia happened from doing this hike at midday!).

Nature experiences | the best places to visit in sri lanka, #8 spot leopards on safari in yala national park.

In our opinion, Yala National Park , which straddles the southeastern coastline of Sri Lanka, is a must-see on any Sri Lanka bucket list.

The 1268sq km park is home to a rich array of dunes, forests, open plains and lush lagoons, which also attracts a huge diversity of wildlife; 44 mammal species (including elephants) and over 215 bird species, to be exact!

Most visit Yala National Park for two reasons; the opportunity to see Leopards and Elephants in the wild. Yala contains one of the largest densities of Leopards in the world, with an estimated 25 leopards roaming Block 1 alone.

If you’ve dreamed of spotting these glorious creatures in the wild, a safari in Yala is absolutely your best chance to witness the elusive cats, while an elephant sighting is basically a given.

We were fortunate enough to see both during our early morning safari, stumbling across a beautiful elephant family at a watering hole, although our leopard sighting was only through a trusty set of long range binoculars. 

As Yala is so popular with locals and tourists alike, the safari routes can get very popular and crowded, especially when a leopard sighting has been reported. We were on safari the first morning that the park was open for the season and actually got stuck in a 30-minute traffic jam to see a Leopard!

To avoid this, we'd suggest visiting during shoulder season, or joining a safari tour group. Note: we actually booked our tour within minutes of arriving in the nearby town of Tissa, as there are plenty of drivers/guides waiting at the station to book passengers for the next day. Easy peasy!

#9 ELEPHANT SPOTTING ON SAFARI IN UDAWALAWE NP

If Yala National Park is the place to spot Leopards in the wild, then Udawalawe National Park is definitely the place to visit in Sri Lanka to spot elephants. In fact, during our early morning safari, we spotted well over 15 elephants including a number of impossibly cute bubs.

Sprawling across the southern lowlands, nestled near the towering Horton Plains, Udawalawe is one of the most popular parks in Sri Lanka. Although the park's landscape is fairly monotonous, it provides the best viewing opportunities for elephants and other fauna. 

It’s also possible to spot buffalo, monkeys, deer, crocodiles and leopards (although the latter is extremely rare). 

In many ways, we preferred our safari in Udawalawe than Yala National Park, mostly due to the numerous elephant sightings, and the lack of crowds which overrun Yala in peak season.

#11 WATCH SUNSET FROM GALLE FORT WALL

There’s just something about that glorious technicolour end to a day that feels more special in Galle Fort than anywhere else we’ve visited.

Each afternoon at around 5:30pm, locals and tourists alike gather along the Fort walls to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. It’s a festive and happy affair; cricket games are played on the grass below, whole families gather to see of the last of the day, and travellers mingle and chat while Mother Nature streaks the sky all kinds of shades of blue, orange, pink and purple.

The best point to watch the sunset from is the Triton Bastion, however you can watch the sunset from pretty much any point on the western side of the Fort walls and be guaranteed a great view.

Don’t forget to keep a lookout for the cliff jumpers at Flag Rock too; each evening a group of locals defy danger by leaping backwards off the ramparts to the ocean below.

#12 hang in mirissa and visit the famous coconut tree hill of mirissa.

Mirissa  is home to one the prettiest beaches on the southern coast, and after spending five nights chilling out in this laidback coastal town we definitely weren’t ready to leave.

Each day we'd swim, eat, and surf. Each night, we'd make our way down to the beach to watch the sunset (a very typical evening during our month in Sri Lanka), marvelling at the kaleidoscope of colours that lit up the sky. 

Although there are plenty of things to see and do in Mirissa, one of our favourite places to visit in Sri Lanka was the insta-famous and delightful Coconut Tree Hill . Although it’s been plastered all over social media, it really is a beautiful and unique place to see with your own eyes, with literally hundreds of palms jutting out of this small, burnt orange hill.

Located at the eastern end of Mirissa beach , the views over Mirissa are spectacular, and there are plenty of places to just chill and watch the world go by. Although it's gaining in popularity quickly, early mornings are relatively free from crowds, while a clear evening will gift you some pretty epic sunset views from here.

For anyone thirsty, there’s a small makeshift bar nearby for a quick sundowner!

How to get to Coconut Tree Hill, Mirissa  | Walk along the Matara Rd out of Mirissa until you reach  Maison D’hotes Sanda Beach .

From there, follow the path on your right and you’ll come to a gate, from which you should be able to walk directly to the palm trees.

#13 ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS OF PERADENIYA, NEAR KANDY

We're huge fans of sprawling city parks, and the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya in Kandy are amongst the best we've visited anywhere in the world. 

Formerly reserved exclusively for Kandyan Royals and with a history dating back to 1371, Peradeniya was turned into botanical gardens in 1821 at the behest of the British.

The gardens are now home to over 10,000 trees spread across 60 hectares (the largest garden in the country), showcasing all of Sri Lanka’s flora and species from around the tropical world, including their famous orchid collection.

We definitely recommend visiting the impressive and insta-worthy avenue of royal palms; a beautiful tree-lined pathway on the interior of the gardens. The unique and otherworldly Cannonball tree, planted by King George and Queen Mary during their visit in 1901, is another must-see on your garden strolls.  

The gardens and its lawns are a great way to escape the hustle, bustle and fierce heat of Kandy’s streets, and are definitely our favourite place to visit in Kandy .

How to get to Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya | You can hire a tuk tuk to the gardens for around LKR 400 or include the gardens in a Kandy day tour itinerary. A cheaper alternative is the #644 bus from the Kandy Clock Tower, which will take you directly to the garden for around LKR 20.

#14 chill and surf at hiriketiya beach.

After a long and sweaty three hour tuk-tuk ride from Unawatuna , we arrived into Hiriketiya Bay on the southern coast of Sri Lanka not sure what to expect. It was love at first sight.

Palm-fringed golden sands, surfers carving up sweet left-handers, cool cafes serving up incredibly fresh brunch worthy of any Melbourne cafe; this was a place so beautiful, so peaceful, and so perfect that we knew we'd definitely arrived in heaven.

What was once a sleepy hidden gem on Sri Lanka’s south coast with little more than a few wooden huts is fast becoming the ‘it’ place for digital nomads and their acai bowls, bronzed surfers riding waves all day long, and salty-haired wanderers chilling into a new level of zen.

There are surf shops that wouldn’t look out of place in any cool coastal town, beachside bars serving up cocktails from mason jars, and even a co-working space, (one of the first in Sri Lanka) has popped up in recent years.

Despite all this progress, Hiriketiya still manages to be the kind of place where thick jungle meets the sea and time becomes totally irrelevant - and we absolutely love it for that.

#15 hike to the summit of pidurangala rock for sunrise.

While there's no doubting Sigiriya's astounding beauty, historical significance, and dramatic features, at USD $30pp, it can be a little expensive for those on a strict budget. 

Fortunately, Pidurangala rock, located adjacent to Sigiriya , provides equally epic views of the surrounding area, a historic cave complex of its own, a tenth of the crowds, and the most incredible view overlooking the famous Sigiriya rock. 

Hiking Pidurangala rock for sunrise has become something of a right of passage for backpackers visiting Sri Lanka, and we definitely recommend waking up early for this - it's a truly magical experience (read our complete guide to Pidurangala here).

Cultural experiences | the best places to visit in sri lanka, #16 explore the ancient rock fortress of sigiriya.

Often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, Sigiriya is one of the 'must see' places on any Sri Lankan bucket list. 

Located right in the heart of Sri Lanka, Sigiriya, otherwise known as Lion Rock, is an ancient palace and fortress built in 480AD atop a unique rock island that rises 200m above the jungle below.

The Fortress, full of abandoned palaces, gardens, waterways and frescoes, has always been an important part of Sri Lanka history, and has seen many wars and invasions play out over the years.

Thankfully, it’s appeal today is a little less gruesome, and it’s become one of the country’s most visited cultural heritage sites (read our guide to Sigiriya here ).

Starting in the gardens, the hike to the summit of Sigiriya is demanding; it is 1200 steps after all. You’ll then pass through ancient frescoes, the 1600 year-old Mirror Wall, and the famous lion paws.

Although arduous and a little sweaty (even at 8am we were drenched!), the hike is absolutely worth it -  the view from the top is awe-inspiring; weathered stone ruins overlook the dense jungle, surrounding plains, and the incredible fortress grounds below.

A note on the entry fee for Sigiriya; there’s plenty of debate around as to whether the (admittedly, very steep) entrance fee of USD $30 for Sigiriya is worth it. We visited in 2016 and splurged on visiting the fortress with absolutely no regrets - it really is a super unique and interesting site.

That said, Pidurangala (above) does provide some pretty epic views over Sigiriya, so if money’s not on your side, we’d recommend visiting Pidu instead.

#17 jump aboard the best train ride in the world, from kandy to ella.

Hotter than the London Underground in a summers day, yet takes eight hours and costs £5. Sounds a little like hell, but trust us, the train ride from Kandy to Ella is the best thing you'll do in Sri Lanka. 

Winding through misty forests, verdant tea plantations; over gushing waterfalls and streams; and past colourful towns and excitable locals, the train ride from Kandy to Ella is, in our opinion, the most picturesque in the world. But it's not just the scenery that makes this train ride so incredible. It's also the vibe. 

Each person you meet greets you with a smile, the local boys play sing, dance and play drums; vendors rush through the train selling chai and snacks, while tourists, head out the windows, stare in amazement at the sheer beauty. Literally everyone you look at is wide-eyed and happy, which in this day and age is hard to find.

The most scenic part of the journey is from Nanu Oya to Ella, through the dense forest of the Horton Plains national park, so we recommend getting the window seat or standing in between the doorways here and enjoying the views as they pass by.

When we first visited Sri Lanka is 2016, the Kandy to Ella train ride was yet to really hit the big time with tourists, however due to its current popularity, you’ll need to book your travel in advance (usually a few days prior). The train may also be quite crowded (especially during peak season), so be warned you may need to push your way onto the train. 

Third class may be the cheapest option but in our opinion it's also the best, as it allows you to sit/hang out of the doorways, and is filled with friendly locals keen to help you enjoy your experience.

#18 explore the magical galle fort.

Galle Fort is unlike any other place we’ve found in Sri Lanka; a vaguely European-feeling city plonked in the deliciously salty tropics, a melting pot of culture and religion bursting with colour, and where, thankfully, the taste of Ceylon tea and cinnamon is never far away.

The Fort is rapidly gentrifying as chic boutiques, cafes, and hotels begin to restore the whitewashed Dutch colonial buildings back to their former glory, but it only takes ducking down a quiet laneway to feel as though you’ve travelled back to the 1700s again.

Alluring, exotic, and totally loveable, Galle Fort is one of the unmissable points of interest on your Sri Lankan itinerary (you can learn all about Galle Fort with our guide ).

#19 walk or cycle through the historical ancient city of polonnaruwa.

Once the capital of ancient Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa now forms part of the famed cultural triangle of Sri Lanka.

Built between the 10th and 12th centuries, it quickly became the thriving commercial and religious epicentre if the country. Made up of a series of temples and religious buildings, the ancient site looks and feels like the Angkor temples of Cambodia, just not as grand or well-preserved. That being said, the site is still wonderful to explore.

The best things to see within the Polonnaruwa complex include:

Gal Vihara | a complete ancient Buddha statue hewn out of solid stone

The Sacred Quadrangle | is definitely the most attractive and intriguing of all the ruins

The Royal Palace | a massive structure dating from 1153

Rankot Vihara | 54m tall large dagoba, still in excellent condition, dating from 1187

Lankatilaka | impressive church-like structure with 17m high walls and huge, standing Buddha

There's also an archaeological museum that's worth a visit to get an understanding of the complex and its long history.

Our visit coincided with the hottest month, April, so exploring the site was tough due to the oppressive heat. We hired a tuk-tuk to drive us to the best spots, which made exploring mildly possible. Alternatively, the best way to explore the Polonnaruwa complex is via bike.

#20 ROAM THROUGH SRI LANKA’S NORTHERN CAPITAL OF JAFFNA

The first thing you'll realise upon arriving into Jaffna is just how different it is from the rest of Sri Lanka.

These northern realms of Sri Lanka beat to their own drum, lead by the Tamils and a strong Hindu culture so entirely separate from the Sinhalese and Buddhist culture of the south.

Colourful Hindu temples dot the region, frequented by sari-clad women and shirtless men praying to the gods. The language is distinct, the people more reserved, and the cuisine influenced strongly by Southern India. 

Despite the lack of rope swings and insta-famous locations, Jaffna has an incredible amount of unique things for you to see and do, including ancient forts and temples, isolated islands, and truly amazing food.

#21 experience an authentic insight into life of delft island, jaffna.

A day-trip to Delft Island ( Neduntheevu  in Tamil, or  Neduntivu in Sinhala) is a totally unique, authentic experience in Sri Lanka - but be warned, getting there is half the fun!

Located about 30kms from Jaffna city, Delft is an outlying coral and limestone island with a history that dates from the ancient  Chola Dynasty , through the Portuguese, Dutch and the British Colonial periods. It's absolutely not your stereotypical postcard-worthy island, but that's all part of its charm. 

Visiting the island was like stepping wayyyyy back in time, with tiny villages and windy dirt roads, ancient rock walls and lush palms swaying in the breeze. While it is still an inhabited island, remnants of the island’s past are dotted throughout. We recommend hiring a tuktuk and visiting the following sites:

Portuguese/Dutch Fort | Ruined ancient Fort, originally built by the Portuguese, and turned into a Fort by the Dutch

Delft Island baobab tree | Huge baobab native to tropical Africa, left by Arab merchants

Old Dutch Hospital | Built by the Dutch and converted into an administrative centre in the early 1900's. In 'The Courts', there's a British Emblem inscribed on the wall

Pigeon Nest | A unique structure used to house messenger pigeons to other areas during the Dutch reign

Where |  Delft Island, off the coast of Jaffna

How to get to Delft island |  From Jaffna you need to get to Kurikadduwan harbour, about an hour away. Take the 776 from Jaffna bus station (LKR 90 per person), departing at 6:30, or a tuk tuk (LKR 2,000). 

The ferry for Delft leaves at 8am or 9am (LKR 100 per person), with a maximum number of 100 passengers, so it's important to get there 30mins before departure.  Returning home, we recommend catching the 14:30 ferry back to Kurikadduwan harbour.

#22 ADMIRE THE ROYAL ROCK CAVE TEMPLE OF DAMBULLA

The famous Royal rock temple complex of Dambulla is home to some of the most impressive historical artwork in Sri Lanka, and a must-see on any Sri Lankan itinerary.

Sitting proudly atop a 160m rock, this UNESCO World Heritage site contains five separate caves with over 150 Buddhist statues and paintings, some dating back over 2,000 years. These are related to Gautama Buddha and his life, with murals covering over 2,100 square metres of cave walls, including depictions of the temptation by the demon Mara, and Buddha's first sermon. 

During the 18th century, the caves were restored and painted by the  Kingdom of Kandy .

The views from atop the rock are incredible, overlooking the surrounding valley, with Sigiriya in the distance; just watch out for the monkeys as they can be rather vicious!

#23 UNDERSTAND SRI LANKA’S SPIRITUAL SIDE AT THE TEMPLE OF THE SACRED TOOTH RELIC, KANDY

Built around a thriving man-made lake and tucked away in lush green hills; Kandy ’s beauty and charm almost makes you forget that this is Sri Lanka’s chaotic second-largest city, not to mention its cultural capital! After all, this is the home of the Temple of the Tooth, the most important shrine to the country’s majority Sinhalese population.

The ornate, golden-roofed Sri Dalada Maligawa (literally, Temple of the Sacred Tooth), houses the most important Buddhist relic in Sri Lanka - a tooth of Buddha brought to the island in the 4th century. Built between 1687 and 1707 to house and honour the sacred relic, the temple has long been a place of spiritual and cultural importance for both Sri Lankan and international visitors. 

The tooth relic itself is enshrined in seven golden caskets, opened briefly during the day for the public to catch a glimpse. Visitors provide offerings and prayers, before moving on to explore the several other temples and museums within the complex.

If you visit Kandy during the annual Perahera (festival of the tooth), you may see the tooth paraded around the city accompanied by 65 decorated Elephants. Note: in no way do we condone, celebrate, or encourage the use of animals for entertainment purposes.

#24 VISIT LIPTON SEAT AND TEA PLANTATIONS

Tea is synonymous with Sri Lanka, and the name Lipton is synonymous with tea.

It was only natural then, that we wanted to visit Lipton Seat, the famous viewpoint whereby entrepreneur and tea mogul Sir Thomas Lipton used to sit and contemplate his vast plantation and the magnificence of Sri Lanka's high country, to sample some of the world's finest tea, straight from its source. 

Despite heavy rain and dense fog surrounding the summit upon our arrival, we managed to enjoy a fresh cup of Sri Lankan tea (LKR 50 per person), while watching the clouds roll by. The tea, we both agreed, was by far the best we've ever consumed. 

Unfortunately we weren't able to enjoy the panoramic views as we would have liked, however our tuk tuk driver said that on a clear day you can see as far as Uda Walawe National park, and all the way to Hambantota port. Despite the weather, the drive from Haputale station through the verdant tea fields and colourful towns was joyous enough. 

If you're looking to visit Lipton Seat from Ella , we advise taking the 6am Ella to Kandy train and jumping off a Haputale (any additional time on that train is well worth it - it's amazing!), and then paying a tuk tuk driver to take you to Lipton Seat from the station (LKR 2,000 - 3,000 for a return trip). We recommend including a tour of the tea factory (more on this below) during your visit. 

A visit to Lipton Seat and the tea plantation tour should take around four hours, providing you with enough time to return to the station for the 11am return train to Ella. 

Alternatively, you can organise a tuk tuk tour from Ella which will include a visit to Nuwara Eliya, Lipton Seat, and a tea factory tour. 

Where | Lipton Seat,  This is located about 18 km from Haputale (7km from Dambetenna Tea Factory)

Cost | LKR 100 per person. If arriving via tuk tuk, a LRK 50 charge applies

How to get to Lipton Seat | Catch the Ella to Kandy train to Haputale, and organise a tuk tuk to take you to Lipton seat. This should cost around LKR 2,000 - 3,000. Alternatively include Lipton Seat as part of a day tour from Ella

#25 EXPLORE SRI LANKA’S MARKETS, EVERYWHERE

Given the incredible range and quality of produce on the island, it's easy to understand why Sri Lanka has vibrant markets on just about every corner.

Not only are these markets a great place to sample some of Ceylon’s finest, they’re a great place to meet and interact with the locals and maybe grab a bargain or two. 

Our favourite markets included Jaffna , which was raw, colourful, unfiltered and full of characters, while the fruit markets just outside Galle Fort were home to some of the freshest and tastiest fruit we've ever eaten. 

#26 CATCH AN AUTHENTIC LOCAL BUS

If you're visiting Sri Lanka, travelling around the country as the locals do is the cheapest way to do it. But besides that, catching a local bus in Sri Lanka is one of the most truly authentic, exhilarating (if not sometimes downright terrifying!) experiences you can have on this little island.

Old-skool Lanka Ashok Leyland buses tear down roads and highways, horns blaring non-stop, pausing momentarily to pick up passengers, before accelerating with gusto to the next stop. Inside, the ambience is festive; Sinhalese pop music is played loudly, while colourful Buddhist deities are proudly displayed on the dash. It's a crazy, chaotic and exciting experience.

Did we mention they’re cheap? Because they’re seriously cheap, ranging from LKR 10 - 100 depending on the distance!

#27 STAY IN A LOCAL HOMESTAY

We can’t stress this enough: skip the hotels and hostels at least once in favour of staying in a local homestay. You absolutely will never regret it.

Sri Lankans are some of the kindest and most hospitable people on the planet, and their generosity is unmatched. They'll bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable, like our hosts in Hiriketiya, who greeted us each morning with a huge smile, fresh Sri Lankan tea and bananas, and provided us with all the local recommendations, including where to eat, surf or explore. All at no extra cost. 

Staying in a homestay in Sri Lanka is the definitely the best way to meet locals, ask questions and enjoy an authentic stay.

Food experiences |  the best things to eat in sri lanka, #28 indulge in rice and curry.

"Rice and curry for my tummy, rice and curry, yummy yummy". Yes, this is an actual song Mark made up during our time in Sri Lanka, much to Mim’s chagrin. But truly, our love of rice and curry for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was seriously real.

Rice and curry is the staple of the Sri Lankan diet, blending warm spices, coconut, vegetables, and occasionally meat (generally fish) to form the most delicious of flavours.  

A typical meal involves a pile of rice, two vegetable curries as well as the option of a meat curry (or a third veggie curry). Curries you absolutely must try are:

Dhal | the staple comprising of lentils cooked in spices with a coconut milk

Brinjal (eggplant) curry | sweet, almost caramelised eggplant with spices

Jackfruit curry | tender baby jackfruit (with an meaty texture) mixed with spices

Just about everywhere serves rice and curry, which costs anywhere between LKR 150 - 500, so for those on a budget, it's not only delicious, but seriously cost effective, too.

For veggies, Sri Lanka is one place you can truly rejoice; considering such a huge portion of the population is Buddhist, vegetarian options are plentiful and delicious.

#29 LEARN HOW TO COOK SRI LANKAN STYLE, IN ELLA

In our humble opinion, Sri Lankan cuisine is amongst the best in the world, so we recommend joining a cooking class in Ella and learning to how to make an assortment of delicious curries. 

We joined a class of eight at Lanka's restaurant and cooking school, and learned to cook an assortment of curries including potato, okra, beetroot, pumpkin and jackfruit; all cooked in traditional clay-pots, as well as sambal to accompany our meals. 

It. Was. Amazing. Not only was the class a lot of fun, our newfound curry-making skills will serve us well in the future.

#30 EAT SRI LANKA’S FAVOURITE STREET FOOD, KOTTU ROTI

You’ll hear Kottu Roti long before you taste it, so ubiquitous is the metal clanging of the hot plates its cooked on. Truly, there’s one thing you need to eat in Sri Lanka, it’s this.

The most popular Sri Lanka street food, kottu is a mix of shredded godamba roti, vegetables and an assortment of spices, cooked quickly on a hot plate and served on just about every street corner. Sometimes mixed with meat or cheese, this is Sri Lankan 'fast food' at it's best. 

Your standard kottu roti will cost about LKR 200 - 500 depending on ingredients, making it ridiculously affordable and extremely filling.

#31 DRINK A MILLION DELICIOUS KING COCONUTS

Perhaps our favourite daily habit in Sri Lanka was devouring a delicious king coconut at every opportunity. So, naturally we recommend you do the same. 

King coconuts, otherwise known as Thambili, can be found just about everywhere in Sri Lanka, and are a huge source of daily vitamin and mineral needs. They also are a great way of replenishing electrolytes from dehydration, which in stinking hot of Sri Lanka, is absolutely necessary.

Not only are thambili coconuts delicious, they're also served naturally (instead of a horrible plastic bottle), so there's no plastic pollution as a result of your hydration.  

They should cost no more than LKR 50 - 100 (around 50c), and remember to refuse a straw, cause, you know, saving the planet!

TRANSPORT IN SRI LANKA | GETTING TO THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SRI LANKA

Due to Sri Lanka’s small size and abundance of transport options, getting around the island is easy, if not a little time consuming and uncomfortable.

Buses and tuk tuks are the most common form of transport on the island, and service even the most remote corners. Buses, however, are a fraction of the cost of tuk tuks and often times make for a much faster method of getting from A to B.

The most picturesque form of transport, however, is Sri Lanka’s train network. The network may be slow, cumbersome, and somewhat unreliable, but it services all the main areas of the island and provides travellers with rich cultural experiences that just aren’t common in western countries.

Accommodation to suit any budget can be found in Sri Lanka, from luxury hotels right through to dorms in budget backpackers. By far the most common type of accommodation is guesthouses, which you can find just about anywhere throughout the island.

Hotels in Sri Lanka range from the most incredible 5* resorts through to standard 3* shoe boxes. Despite this, hotels are much cheaper here than other parts of the world, so if you’ve got a decent travel budget, you can find some incredible accommodations at decent rates.

Guesthouses are the most popular accommodation option in Sri Lanka and can be found just about everywhere on the island. They’re how we choose to travel around the island!

It’s important to note that hostels are rarer in Sri Lanka than in other southeast Asian countries, mostly due to the abundance of wonderful guesthouses. That being said, there are a number of cool hostels in all the main destinations on the island, including Unawatuna , Galle , Ella , Kandy and Colombo.

One of the best is The Doctors House , located in Matara, which is located in a restored colonial building and has a cool outdoor bar and chill area to meet other travellers.

SRI LANKA WEATHER, AND THE BEST TIME TO VISIT

Sri Lanka’s weather, much like its politics, is a complicated beast punctuated by two seperate monsoons, which affect different parts of the island and different times of year.

When the monsoon occurs will define where you should travel to, however it also means that some part of the island will have good weather when you decide to visit!

If you’re wanting to visit the incredible sights of the south and central areas, December to March is the best time to visit Sri Lanka .

Alternatively, if you’re keen to hit the surf breaks of Arugam Bay and Trincomalee, April/May to September is the best time to visit Sri Lanka .

Sri Lanka is an amazing travel destination offering a wide range of places to visit and things to do. This island, located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of India, presents visitors with an incredible array of environments and tourist attractions to enjoy and experience.

This relatively compact island boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites where that history is preserved. The best places travelers can trace the island's fascinating history, from ancient times through the colonial period to the present, are in cities like Colombo and Kandy .

Incredible outdoor landscapes and safari experiences can be found in the country's large elephant- and leopard-filled national parks, like Yala, Minneriya, and Udawalawe. Sri Lanka is also a beach-lover's paradise , ringed by some of the world's most beautiful beaches, and home to a number of luxury beach resorts.

The Hambantota area is the best place to visit for a resort vacation experience. This is also one of the best places to visit for families, as many of the resorts are all-inclusive and there is a lot to see and do without having to leave the property.

When planning a Sri Lankan adventure, keep in mind that the country experiences its rainy season from May through August, making December through April usually the best time to visit. The shoulder season, September, October, and November, is a good time to visit as well.

The capital city combines modern urban amenities with the country's colorful indigenous and colonial history. As a key stop on the world spice trade routes, Sri Lanka has long held strategic importance for European trading powers.

The country has been a colony of Portugal, the Netherlands, and most recently the British, and all these cultures blend with the Indigenous culture to form a wonderful hybrid. You can taste these influences in the food, see them in the architecture and the arts, and you can really feel them in Colombo.

Too many visitors simply use Columbo for its international airport (CMB) and immediately head out to the resort areas on the coast. The city is well worth a visit of at least a few days, even if you plan to head to a beach resort.

The city is also filled with museums and other things to do that can help connect you with Sri Lankan culture. Colombo sits on the coast, and there's a large green space and beach area right in the heart of the city separating an area called Fort from the Indian Ocean. It's the city's public playground and a fun place to visit, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

The city's new mega-tower, the Colombo Lotus Tower , is a great place to visit. The tallest free-standing tower in Southeast Asia, it provides amazing views of the city. Aside from indoor and outdoor observation areas, there's a fancy restaurant at the top and a popular food court in the mall at the tower base.

Kandy is where you go to learn about and experience Sri Lankan history. Located in central Sri Lanka, the city is the former capital city of the Sri Lankan royal dynasty, the country's main capital before the colonial period.

The high point of what's called the "Kandian Era" was between the 15 th and 18 th centuries, when the area remained independent while most of the coastal regions were colonized by European powers.

Be sure to visit the city's National Museum of Kandy , as it illustrates the story of the region and its people via exhibits and artifacts. Nearby, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a very holy Buddhist shrine, part of the royal palace complex. If you visit in August, there is a huge festival celebrating the temple and relics.

Kandy Lake is at the heart of the city and offers a peaceful refuge from the heat. There are hiking paths that circle the lake, dotted with temples and shrines. Venture out to the nearby suburb of Peradeniya and its amazing Royal Botanical Gardens.

Kandy is surrounded by mountains, which are home to many tea plantations. Some can be visited and offer tours and tea tastings. It's also surrounded by rainforests. The Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a forest park located within the city limits. The forest reserve has miles of hiking trails, as well as an excellent nature center with educational information.

This large wildlife park is in the southern part of the country, about an hour's drive from the resort area of Hambantota. The terrain and environment vary, as the park is on the border of the country's wet and dry zones.

Visitors to the park can see elephants, as there's a large population of them, along with crocodiles, water buffalo, and more. In fact, it's one of the best places in the world to see elephants in the wild outside of Africa .

There are leopards there, too, but they can be very hard to track or spot. There are also monkeys and a large assortment of deer and small mammals. It's also an excellent place for bird-watching.

There are some small accommodations and guesthouses across from and even inside Udawalawe. You can also visit as a day trip, the best times to visit are very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon.

The city of Galle is about a two-hour drive from Colombo via one of the country's first modern superhighways. This ancient trading port reflects its colonial history and is focused around a large, 17 th -century seafront fort.

Galle Fort is an entire preserved walled town, now filled with boutique hotels, shops, and restaurants (along with real residents). The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a great place to explore on foot – the entire Fort area is car-free. It's hard to get lost, as you're surrounded on three sides by the sea. It's one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for families, as the area is compact and filled with tourist-centric businesses.

Aside from and outside the fort, the city is surrounded by some amazing beaches . Like others in the country, the wide sand beach leads into clear, turquoise water. There's even a beach right beneath the iconic Galle lighthouse.

Only 90 minutes from Colombo, this beach is all about water sports, surfing, bodyboarding, snorkeling, and scuba diving. All the gear is easily available for rent from one of the beachfront stands. It's one of the country's most popular surfing areas , with the best waves between November and March.

The beach is large, so it never feels too crowded. There are a lot of beachfront stands selling all kinds of delicious local street food and a good number of small hotels and guesthouses if you want to stay overnight. It's also becoming home to more beach resorts, catering to foreign visitors with appropriate levels of luxury and amenities.

It's also known for its coral. The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary is a preserved marine area and part of Hikkaduwa National Park , located just off the shoreline. It was created to protect the area's coral reefs and educate visitors about coral. It can be explored on a guided boat tour or even by snorkeling.

Sri Lanka's version of LA's Venice Beach and NYC's Central Park isn't the place to get away from it all, but it is the place to relax, people watch, and have some fun with other Sri Lankans, whether it's day or night.

Aside from the beach, there's a large grass area where people picnic and play games. For the best energy, visit on a Friday or Saturday night. Come hungry, as every night there is a market with incredible street food to enjoy.

You can enjoy the beach and water or maybe fly a kite in the ever-present wind. You can play some football (soccer) or cricket as there are always pick-up games going on. The beach is fronted by vendors and restaurants, and the area beyond it is filled with hotels ranging in price from budget to luxury.

Be sure to visit the historic Galle Face Hotel, a beachfront colonial remnant that first opened in 1864. Galle Face Green is in the heart of downtown Colombo, just in front of Fort. You have the skyline behind you and the sea in front of you. It's the area between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean.

Located on the island's southeast coast, this national park is known for leopard safaris . Leopards are very rare, but the park has a large population and it's possible to spot them even on a day trip. The park is also home to a large population of Asian elephants, which are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Aside from the fauna, the park is home to some incredible, varied environments and ecosystems. You can visit the marine and beach environment of the coastal areas, follow leopards across vast grasslands, or explore tropical rainforests.

There are also some important Buddhist temples and shrines within Yala, which is not far from the resort area of Hambantota.

A visit to Anuradhapura, one of the country's ancient capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards visitors with a glimpse into the past. The area is unique, as there's a thriving, modern town adjacent to an ancient one — you're not just visiting ruins. The current population makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth (starting in the 4th century BCE).

The ruins are awesome, with many crumbling temples, statues, pools, and other structures. There are modern structures, too, and the temple remains an active place of worship. The core of the complex is a very old tree. The Sri Maha Bodhi is believed to be the world's oldest living tree planted by a human.

Anuradhapura is a fun place to visit, as there are a lot of small guesthouses and cheap places to eat, along with bike rental, tour guides, and other businesses catering to tourists.

This is an important ancient city ruin site, another one of the country's World Heritage Sites . Pollonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's second capital city, after Anuradhapura, thriving about a thousand years ago.

The garden-city is completely preserved, although most of the structures are in ruins. There are gardens, palaces, and temples, and while it's rather compact, it's best explored by bicycle. A bonus, the ruins are inhabited by a large troop of macaque monkeys, also residents of the area since ancient times. Duran Duran fans will recognize the site, as their Save a Prayer video was filmed here in the 1980s.

There's a small, modern town a few miles from the ruins, with guesthouses, bike rentals, cafés, and other tourist services. The town is close to Minneriya National Park, a great place to elephant-watch.

As an island, Sri Lanka is surrounded by beaches, and there really is something for everyone. For a diverse range of beach experiences, head to the Tangalle area. It's in the center of the southern coast of the island and is a popular resort destination.

You''ll find a wide range of beaches, from tropical coves to wide, windswept, seemingly endless stretches of open sand. You can also find beaches with services, vendors, and beachfront stands, as well as remote beaches where you're almost certain to find yourself alone.

At Rekawa Beach , just east of the town, there's a big sea turtle nesting area and conservation center.

This national park and wetland sanctuary, with its dunes, lagoons, and large freshwater bodies of water, is one of the world's best places to visit for bird-watching . There are many species of birds here; some are endemic to Sri Lanka. Many of the birds migrate here seasonally from as far away as Siberia.

Aside from the birds there are many crocodiles, which like to eat the birds, as well as a large population of elephants. The beaches are a popular place for four of Sri Lanka's five species of sea turtles to lay their eggs.

The Bundala park area is along the southern Sri Lankan coastline between Kirinda and Hambantota.

Sometimes it's as much about the journey as it is about the destination. An example of this is Ella, a small, hill-country town set among Sri Lanka's lush tea plantations. It's filled with small guesthouses, amazing food, and very friendly people. It's a fun getaway from the city or a way to enjoy a few days of leisurely hiking in the countryside.

A big reason people visit Ella is to ride the train from Kandy. Slowly, it winds its way up and down hills, through small towns, across green tea fields, until finally arriving in the small mountain town after about six hours. The ride is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world . You can also start the journey in Colombo, which adds three hours to the trip.

Another one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka that's also all about the journey is Adam's Peak. This mountain is topped by a sacred rock formation, and pilgrims traditionally climb to the summit at night in time to watch the sunrise.

The popular hike (which is great for families and children, too) generally takes about three hours, and there are rest stops and food vendors along the path. After the hike, you'll be rewarded by seeing a rock with a footprint-shaped indentation where some believe Adam made his first step. Others believe it's the footprint of Buddha, and some believe it was made by the deity Shiva.

The Adam's Peak hike begins in the village of Nallathanniya in central Sri Lanka. The best times to make the climb are between December and May when the weather is somewhat mild.

Like Machu Picchu or Masada, Sigiriya impresses visitors just with the absurdity of its construction. It's a huge rock formation that's been carved and transformed into a palace. The ruins are near the town of Dambulla in the central part of the country.

Built about 1,500 years ago, the palace complex sits atop a 660-foot (220-meter) rock with sheer walls. Those walls have ancient painted frescoes and carvings transforming the whole structure into a work of art. In the middle of one rock wall, there's a giant gateway carved in the shape of a lion.

Aside from the palace above, the area below is an intricate city complex with gardens and residential and commercial areas. It's a very important surviving example of early city planning from this era.

If you're looking to see elephants in their natural environment, Minneriya National Park near the town of Polonnaruwa , is the best place to go. The lush, protected landscape means the park is a dry-season (May through September) feeding area for the elephants who live in the region's forests. The park is in Sri Lanka's Dry Zone, which sees far less rainfall than the other parts of the island.

Minneriya is a much better option to see elephants than some of the country's elephant orphanages and sanctuaries, which can be tourist traps that mistreat the animals. Various operators offer full- and half-day jeep safaris where you can explore the vast space. You could also visit the park on a day trip from Colombo; it's about three hours away by car.

The Top 10 Destinations in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s rich culture and history, gorgeous landscape and scenery, and plentiful wildlife-spotting opportunities are the main reasons the country tops many travelers’ bucket lists. And due to its relatively small size, many of the best attractions and destinations are within only a couple of hours of each other. In one day, if you’re on a tight schedule, you could spend the morning at one of the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, go on a safari in the afternoon, and then in the evening, relax and enjoy a cup of tea from one of the hill country plantations. Or, with more time, allow the opportunity for spontaneous exploration—road tripping throughout the country offers scenic views almost everywhere, and you might pull over for an elephant sighting or two along the way!

Kandy, a major city in Sri Lanka’s hill country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and one corner of the country’s Cultural Triangle. It’s surrounded by mountains of rainforest and tea plantations and is home to a beautiful lake within the city. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred temple that houses Buddha’s tooth; wander the city’s colorful streets, and admire the architecture while sampling food from the many street vendors; walk around the lake for scenic views of the lake itself and also the colorful buildings that dot the hillsides around it; and make the quick drive outside of the city to the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens to visit its orchid house and its spice garden, the latter of which will take you on an olfactory tour of the country’s native spices. 

This massive rock formation is not only a breathtaking sight to take in as you approach, jutting up from the flat lands that surround it but also a place of cultural and historical significance. The UNESCO World Heritage site was a fort and palace that dates back to the fifth century. A network of winding staircases and paths will lead you to the top of the rock if you’re game to do the 1,217-step climb. Along the way, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley around you, you’ll pass ancient paintings by monks on the rock walls, and learn about the kingdom that once called this rock home. If you plan on making the entire climb (which we highly recommend), arrive at the park at opening time—you’ll avoid the afternoon heat and beat most of the crowds.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, one of the three corners of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and the current capital city of the North Central Province, was the first ancient capital in Sri Lanka, thriving for more than 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993. Tourists visit this UNESCO World Heritage site to explore the well-preserved ruins and significant Buddhist history. Several dagobas, distinctive dome-shaped memorials, remain in the city, one of which is said to house Buddha’s collarbone. Another important site is the Bodhi tree found in the Mahamewna Gardens —it’s the oldest known human-planted tree in the world, and it grew from the southern branch of a sacred fig tree in India, the tree under which Gautama Buddha was said to have gained enlightenment.

Polonnaruwa

The third corner of the Cultural Triangle , Polonnaruwa became the second capital after Anuradhapura was abandoned. Like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is a draw for visitors interested in touring the city’s history and ruins, including those of the royal palace and other royal spaces, the quadrangle (a raised, walled-off area of monuments and Buddha statues), and dagobas. You’ll undoubtedly spot many monkeys (toque macaques) in the area, and that population of native, endangered monkeys was featured in Disney’s nature documentary, “Monkey Kingdom.” 

Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located along the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country, primarily because of the chance to spot the leopards in the area—it is home to one of the largest concentrations of leopards in the world. (The land became a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and then a national park in 1938.) Although it comprises five blocks, only two of them are open to the public for safari to preserve and protect the majority of the land. Between February and July is the best time to visit; during these months, the lower water levels bring more animals out in the open searching for water. However, the park can get crowded in these peak months, and higher traffic through the park can lessen your chances of spotting one of the elusive leopards. Even so, you’ll still have the opportunity to see elephants, crocodiles, and water buffaloes.

Minneriya National Park

Sri Lanka has plenty of safari opportunities, but Minneriya National Park is known for having the world's largest gatherings of Asian elephants. Previously an elephant sanctuary, the land was converted to a national park in 1997, and Asian elephants still freely roam the grounds in large herds. While you'll likely get a glimpse of several whenever you visit, the dry season from June to September is the best time to visit. This is when the elephants (sometimes as many as 300) will congregate around the reservoir. It might be most famous for these elephant sightings, but the park is also home to more than 170 species of birds, leopards, monkeys, and other wildlife.

Many tourists skip Colombo to set off for the country’s beautiful nature destinations, but the capital city deserves some of your time . Colombo comprises several distinct neighborhoods that showcase the old and new—from ancient temples and colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and city parks. It’s easy (and recommended) to wander and simply take in the sights as you go. One impressive architectural sight you won’t be able to miss is the Jami Ul-Alfar Masjid (also known as the Red Mosque), a red and white mosque in Colombo’s Pettah neighborhood. Admiring it from the outside is intriguing enough, but if you want to go inside, ensure you’ve dressed appropriately; women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs. 

This fortified old city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka is another of the country’s impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the best things to do is walk along the fort’s ramparts that give you a view out to the water and inward toward the fort and city. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fort to learn about its history and architecture. Although the fort is the main attraction for visitors to the area, Galle is a prime destination for shopping as well; wander the pedestrian-friendly streets to check out the many art galleries, upscale markets, and boutique stores selling clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and home goods.

Nuwara Eliya

Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest exports, so a trip to the rolling hills of tea country is well worth your time. Nuwara Eliya boasts hundreds of acres of tea plantations and several tea production facilities you can visit to learn about the entire tea-making process, from planting to picking and steeping at home. Once you’ve had your fill of tea, be sure to explore the other gorgeous surroundings of Nuwara Eliya, such as the manicured and well-maintained Victoria Park, Lake Gregory for a day on the water, or a lakeside picnic, or the beautiful, 350-foot tall Ramboda Falls.

As one of the main beach destinations in the country, Mirissa attracts those looking for a laid-back, leisurely vacation of days lounging on the sand and nights out on the town. Among the gorgeous beaches in Mirissa, Mirissa Beach and Secret Beach are two of the best for their beauty and seclusion, but neither one gets too crowded. If you’d rather be out on the water, Mirissa is a surfer’s paradise, especially from October to April, and it’s also a popular destination for whale watching tours to spot blue whales. After a day in the sun, hit some of the casual but lively restaurants and bars, some of which are right along the beach, making them a perfect setting for a sunset cocktail.

Are you planning your trip and trying to figure out what to include on your Sri Lanka bucket list? I get it, there’s a ton of great stuff to see and do!

For years, I had dreamt of visiting Sri Lanka, and when I finally did, wow, it was everything and more.

Even though I did a ton of cool stuff, it feels like I’ve only seen a tiny bit of what this amazing island has to offer. I’m already itching to go back.

If you’re trying to work out the best things to see and do in Sri Lanka, you’re in the right place. I’ve put together this guide from my own adventures to help you catch all the must-sees and hidden gems.

Whether you’re an adventure seeker, wildlife enthusiast or a history buff, I can’t wait to share my top picks with you.  Get ready to fill your itinerary with unforgettable experiences!

24. Explore Polonnaruwa

At the top of your Sri Lanka to-do list is to go on a safari. 

Sri Lanka has 26 National Parks dotted all over the country. You’ve heard of “the big five” in Africa, well Sri Lanka has their own big five list.

• Asian Elephants
• Sloth Bears
• Blue Whales
• Sperm Whales

Granted, you’re not going to see the whales on a safari, but you probably will get to see elephants.

I did an elephant safari at Hurulu Eco Park in Habarana. We got to see a family of elephants up close and personal. It was an unforgettable experience. Other great places to spot elephants in Sri Lanka are Minneriya National Park and Kaudulla National Park.

One thing you might spot if you’re out and about in Sri Lanka is what they refer to as a ‘domesticated elephant’.  You’ll often see them shackled at the ankles, and chained up or in a small enclosure.These elephants have been brought up in captivity and used for rides or shows.Please do not support these and instead opt for a more ethical approach. It’s best to opt for a safari at a national park instead to see elephants in their natural habitat.

2. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic

One of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka is the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.

This temple is believed to hold a tooth relic from Buddha himself and is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. It’s also one of the designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka.

You don’t have to be a Buddhist to visit. However, you do need to make sure you are dressed appropriately – men and women must cover their shoulders and knees, as well as remove shoes.

I highly recommend hiring a guide to explain the history and significance of this temple – signage is limited here.

3. Walk Over Nine Arches Bridge

For an iconic photo opportunity, head to Nine Arches Bridge in Ella.

This stunning bridge was built during the British colonial era and is surrounded by lush greenery and tea plantations.

Because this is one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka it gets busy. To avoid the crowds, try to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

👉 Insider Tip: Nine Arches Bridge is 4km away from Ella. The easiest way to get there is by taking a tuk-tuk from Ella Town. The tuk-tuk will wait for you at a parking spot near to Nine Arches Bridge.

4. Ride the Famous Ella to Kandy Train

Sri Lanka is famous for its scenic train rides and the most popular one is from Ella to Kandy.

This seven-hour journey takes you through tea plantations, mountains, and valleys.

Make sure to book your tickets in advance as this train ride is popular among tourists and locals alike.

If possible, try to reserve a seat by the window for the best views.

👉 Insider Tip: If you don’t have time to do the Ella to Kandy journey, but still want to experience a train ride in Sri Lanka, then opt for the shorter “Calypso” tourist train. This shorter ride does the journey between Badulla and Demodara with a 10-minute stop at 9 Arces Bridge to take photos.

5. Stay in a Jungle Lodge

For a truly unique experience, stay in a jungle lodge during your time in Sri Lanka.

These eco-friendly accommodations offer an immersive and sustainable way to enjoy the country’s natural beauty.

Expect to be surrounded by lush greenery, wildlife, and stunning views.

Plus, many jungle lodges offer activities such as nature walks, and bird watching.

I stayed at a few Eco-lodges in Sri Lanka.

If you’re in looking for one with a bit of an adventurous journey to get there (I’m talking a crazy 4×4 ride AND a cable car to get down to the valley) then I highly recommend visiting Ella Jungle Resort.

For an eco-lodge which is more at the luxury end, then I also suggest checking out Aliya Resort and Spa in Habarana.

6. Explore Galle Fort

Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch. The fortified town is one of the best places to peek into Sri Lanka’s colonial history. 

Walk along the ramparts for stunning views of the Indian Ocean and explore the photogenic streets lined with colonial architecture, boutique shops, cafes and restaurants.

My one regret is that I didn’t spend long enough here (I’d recommend at least a couple of days!) – I loved the vibe of the place and I’ll certainly be spending more time in Galle Fort on my next visit.

7. See the Diverse Architecture in Colombo

Although most people arrive in Sri Lanka, via Colombo – the nation’s capital – it often gets overlooked as people head off to other destinations in the country. But don’t make that mistake!

Colombo boasts a diverse and eclectic mix of architecture, reflecting its colonial history and multi-cultural influences. From the Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences to traditional Sinhalese designs, there is so much to see in Colombo .

Be sure to explore the bustling Pettah Market, visit the famous Gangaramaya Temple, and the British-era buildings in the Fort area and take a walk along the promenade at Galle Face Green.

8. Watch Sunrise Over Sigiriya From Pidurangala Rock

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is one of the most iconic and visited landmarks in Sri Lanka.

If you’re an early riser – and even if you’re not – I highly recommend making the short yet steep trek up Pidurangala Rock for sunrise – it’s definitely worth the effort!

From Pidurangala Rock, you’ll have an outstanding 360-degree panoramic view of Sigiriya Rock and the surrounding countryside as the sun rises.

On the way back down you can explore the ancient ruins of Pidurangala Rock Temple like the giant reclining Buddha sleeping under a rock overhang.

Seeing the sunrise over one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks is one of the things not to miss in Sri Lanka.

👉 Insider Tip: You’ll be starting your hike in the dark, and although it’s a relatively well-defined path with a bit of a scramble over rocks at the top, it is dark and there are plenty of rocks and tree roots to trip over. There are some lights along the trail, but they aren’t great.

I recommend taking a headtorch so you have your hands free from the scramble. 

9. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as Lion Rock, is one of the top places to visit in Sri Lanka.

Built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century, this ancient palace was constructed on top of a massive rock pillar. From the top, you’ll have stunning views over the surrounding landscape.

The climb up to the top may be challenging for some, with steep steps and narrow walkways, but the reward is well worth it.

Once at the top, you can explore the ruins of the ancient palace.

👉 Insider Tip:   Try to visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. Also, be sure to bring plenty of water for the climb!

10. Visit a Tea Plantation

Sri Lanka is known for its tea production, and a visit to one of the many tea estates is a must for your Sri Lanka bucket list.

You can take tours of the plantations and facilities where you’ll learn about the process of growing and harvesting tea leaves.

Some estates even offer the opportunity to pick your own tea leaves and watch as they are turned into the famous Ceylon tea.

After your tour, be sure to sit down for a cup of freshly brewed tea.

The best places to visit in Sri Lanka to experience the tea culture are Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Kandy.

I visited Demodara Tea Estate. They charge $10 per person for the tour.

11. Explore Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada)

Another popular hiking spot in Sri Lanka is Adam’s Peak, also known as Sri Pada.

This mountain is considered sacred by many religions and features a large footprint-shaped impression at the summit believed to be that of Buddha, Shiva, or Adam (depending on your beliefs).

It’s one of the more challenging activities in Sri Lanka – the hike up to the summit is over 5,000 steps –  but it’s well worth the effort for the views at the top.

👉 Insider Tip: The best time to make the climb is during December – May when the weather is better. April is a peak season for the trail as this is the month of the Sinhalese New Year.  The trail also gets busy at weekends and full-moon days.

12. Discover Little Adams Peak

If you don’t want to tackle the steep climb of Adam’s Peak, then Little Adams Peak is a great alternative.

Located in Ella, this smaller peak offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and tea plantations.

The hike is much easier than Adam’s Peak – it takes about 45 minutes to reach the top – making it suitable for most fitness levels.

Along the way, you’ll pass through tea plantations and small villages, giving you a glimpse into rural life in Sri Lanka.

13. Visit Yala National Park

If you’re a fan of nature and wildlife, then Yala National Park in the southeast of the country is a must.

Part of the reserve borders the Indian Ocean, making it a unique location where you can spot both land and marine animals. There are also ancient Buddhist ruins in the park.

The park is home to the highest density of leopards in the world!

Other wildlife includes elephants, crocodiles, and an abundance of bird species.

Take a safari tour through the park with an experienced guide to give you the best chances of spotting wildlife. 

👉 Insider Tip: The best time to visit is from February – June. This is when the water levels are lower making it easier to spot animals so animals come to the lagoons to drink.

14. Climb Ella Rock

Ella Rock is another popular place for hiking in Sri Lanka, located near the town of Ella.

The hike takes about 2-3 hours. From the top, you’ll have views of Ella Gap, a stunning valley between two mountain ranges. 

The trail can be quite steep and challenging at times, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear and take plenty of water.

15. Go Inside Dambulla Cave Temple and Golden Temple of Dambulla

The Dambulla Royal Cave Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also the largest cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.

It dates back to the 1st century BCE and has five caves filled with murals, statues, and paintings depicting Buddha and other important figures in Buddhism.

Next to the cave temple is the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a modern temple complex with a golden Buddha statue looming above.

👉 Insider Tip: This is a sacred site, so to enter you’ll need to remove shoes as well as cover your shoulders and legs.

16. Go Whale Watching in Mirissa

If you’re a lover of marine life, then you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see blue whales and sperm whales off the coast of Mirissa.

The best time for whale watching is from November – April when the seas are calmest.

You might also see other wildlife like dolphins and turtles, so keep your eyes peeled.

Book a tour with a reputable company that follows responsible and sustainable tourism practices and helps towards the conversation of marine life.

17. Try All the Food

Like everywhere in Asia, Sri Lankan food is delicious!

Also, there were plenty of naturally veggie-friendly dishes too, so I never felt like I was missing out on anything. 

Make sure to try out some of the local specialities like kottu roti, hoppers, and string hoppers  (a type of rice noodle).

One of my favourite dishes was the pineapple curry, which is a perfect blend of sweet and spicy flavours.

The food does tend to be on the chilli-hot side, if you’re sensitive to these types of food, then ask your server to point out the milder dishes.

18. Learn to Surf at Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka has some excellent surf spots, and Arugam Bay is considered the best place on the island to ride the waves.

The laid-back beach town has a variety of waves suitable for beginners to experienced surfers.

You can rent boards and book lessons from one of the many surf schools in town.

19. Relax on Mirissa Beach and Coconut Tree Hill

Sri Lanka has dozens of beautiful beaches.

Mirissa Beach, on the southern coast, is one of the most popular places to go in Sri Lanka thanks to its golden sand, crystal clear waters, and plenty of beachside bars and restaurants.

👉 Insider Tip: For an Instagram-worthy moment, head to Coconut Tree Hill located at the end of Mirissa Beach.

20. Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park is home to around 600 elephants.

Take a jeep safari through the park to see them, as well as try to spot other wildlife such as leopards, buffalo, and birdlife. 

The park is also famous for its conservation efforts and elephant transit home, where orphaned elephants are cared for before being released back into the wild.

👉 Insider Tip: Try to book a safari early in the morning or late in the afternoon when animals are most active.

21. Snorkel in Trincomalee

Trincomalee is a coastal town in the northeast of the country, known for its stunning beaches and crystal clear waters.

This is one of the top places to go snorkelling in Sri Lanka, where you can try to spot a variety of marine life including turtles and tropical fish. 

If you’re looking for more adventurous things to do in Sri Lanka, then opt for scuba diving here instead. 

22. Support Local Initiatives

Since covid, there’s been a huge shift towards reducing the impact that mass tourism has on a destination.

If you’re wondering what to see and do in Sri Lanka to support eco-tourism, then check out the various initiatives and organizations dedicated to responsible tourism, conservation, and supporting local communities.

Some options include visiting community-based projects such as taking a mangrove tour while helping with a litter cleanup, or learning about traditional crafts from local artisans.

23. Visit Kandy Town

Located in the central highlands, Kandy is a city that combines culture and nature. The town has plenty of options for accommodation, as well as boutique shops, cafes and restaurants.

Kandy is a great town to base yourself in for several days – there’s a lot to see and do around here.

Some highlights include visiting the Temple of the Tooth, a sacred Buddhist temple that houses a tooth relic of Buddha.

You can also explore the Royal Botanical Gardens, take a walk around Kandy Lake, or visit nearby tea plantations for some scenic views while sipping on cups of freshly made tea.

Another must-visit destination in Sri Lanka is the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the capital of Sri Lanka and is now an archaeological site filled with ruins and temples dating from the 12th century.

If you’re a fan of temples and ruins, this site will be one of the top things to see in Sri Lanka – the site reminds me of Sukhothai or Ayutthaya in Thailand.

It’s difficult to say which is better. I adore both of them. For wildlife, Sri Lanka pips the spot, and for beaches, I’d say it’s Thailand because of the abundance of islands. The people in both are incredibly friendly. Sri Lanka is smaller and easier to travel around, whereas Thailand offers more diverse experiences.

Former Sri Lanka skipper and one-time chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya was appointed on Monday to replace head coach Chris Silverwood, who quit following the country's early exit from the T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka Cricket said Jayasuriya, 55, will be the "interim" coach until a full-time appointment is made for the national team.

Jayasuriya said he would coach the national squad ahead of a white-ball series against India this month and Sri Lanka's tour of England in August.

"I have been asked to take over coaching and I am happy to do it," Jayasuriya told AFP.

Jayasuriya, a former Test and ODI captain, had also been a national selector.

Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive Ashley de Silva said the appointment was with immediate effect.

"Sanath, with his wealth of international cricketing experience, is well positioned to guide the national team, until we find a permanent solution," de Silva said in a statement.

Jayasuriya represented Sri Lanka 586 times across the three formats of the game, hitting 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets. He played his last international in 2011.

Former England coach Silverwood, 49, quit for "personal reasons", according to Sri Lanka Cricket, which thanked him for his "valuable contributions during his tenure".

Sri Lanka won only one match at the T20 World Cup tournament, against the Netherlands, and finished third in their group behind South Africa and Bangladesh.

Silverwood took over in April 2022 and enjoyed immediate success, as Sri Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup later that year.

They reached the final of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023.

But they failed to make it to the knockout stages of the T20 World Cup in 2022 and last year's 50-over World Cup.

Former skipper Mahela Jayawardena also stepped down as "consultant coach" last month.

Michelin is delighted to unveil the new selection of restaurants for The MICHELIN Guide Dubai 2024. This year’s award winners were announced at a ceremony held at One&Only One Za’abeel hotel.

The selection that makes up the third edition of the Dubai Guide includes a total of 106 restaurants . The headline news this year is the awarding of Two MICHELIN Stars to Row on 45 , along with the award of One MICHELIN Star to 4 other restaurants, as well as 6 new Bib Gourmands.

A New Two Star Restaurant

Row on 45 accomplishes the impressive feat of going straight into The Guide with Two MICHELIN Stars. Under the aegis of celebrated British chef Jason Atherton , it serves a multi-course tasting menu to just 22 guests. The name derives from an acronym of ‘Refinement of Work’ and its location on the 45th floor of the Grosvenor House hotel. The Inspectors were hugely impressed by the marriage of French techniques with Japanese ingredients such as Hokkaido scallops and Saroma wagyu to create dishes that are refined and sophisticated. The restaurant brings the total number of restaurants with Two MICHELIN Stars in Dubai to 4.

4 Restaurants Newly Awarded One MICHELIN Star

La Dame de Pic Dubai comes from acclaimed chef consultant  Anne-Sophie Pic and is her debut in Dubai. Her modern French cuisine, which sees a few subtle local influences added to her famous signature dishes, is rewarded with a MICHELIN Star.

Smoked Room is another restaurant that goes straight into The Guide with a MICHELIN Star. In 2024, chef Dani García introduced Dubai diners to this sister restaurant to his flagship in Madrid. The skill with which the kitchen uses fire and grills for the creative dishes is quite something.

Chef Tetsuya Wakuda is another famous name and he has created Sagetsu by Tetsuya . His team offers a sublime culinary experience by fusing Japanese and French culinary influences in chic surroundings and it too goes straight into The Guide with a MICHELIN Star.

Orfali Bros is run by three Syrian brothers and provides globally influenced small plates that are bold and balanced. This deservedly popular restaurant has matured and developed and, having previously received a Bib Gourmand, is now the recipient of a MICHELIN Star.

All the restaurants awarded One MICHELIN Star in the 2023 selection maintain their distinction this year, bringing the total to 4 restaurants with Two MICHELIN Stars, 15 restaurants with One MICHELIN Star and 3 with a MICHELIN Green Star.

6 Restaurants Receive a Bib Gourmand

DUO Gastrobar is a contemporary restaurant offering a mix of Asian and European flavours. Revelry is a little sister to avatāra which is next door; this Indian 'tapas bar' offers a mix of the traditional and the modern. Persian classics are on offer at Berenjak , a sister branch to the London original. Hoe Lee Kow is a Korean eatery specializing in barbecue and is another venture from notable local chef Reif Othman . There’s another branch of REIF Japanese Kushiyaki , this one in Dubai Hills, offering everything from kushiyaki to classics with a modern twist. Finally, the very likeable Japanese restaurant Konjiki Hototogisu , on the second floor of the Mall of the Emirates, receives a Bib Gourmand for its ramen and other favourites.

MICHELIN Special Award Winners

This year, the Young Chef Award goes to Jesus Lobato Suarez who, at just 30 years old, is Head Chef at Smoked Room , which has gained a MICHELIN Star for 2024. This focused young chef has a calming and relaxed demeanor. He leads from the front and has a maturity well beyond his years. The Sommelier Award goes to Michael Mpofu , the South African Sommelier at Celebrities by Mauro Colagreco . His warm, affable and friendly approach is coupled with a clear passion for wine. Michael’s infectious and engaging style and his comprehensive knowledge puts every guest at ease and elevates every dining experience. His recommendations are always spot on!

The Service Award is given to the team at DuangDy by BO.LAN . The wonderfully warm Thai hospitality is led by General Manager Apichaya Khomson and Team Leader Veerawich (Champion) Chanthawatthamkul . The team makes a great effort to ensure everyone feels so welcome and their friendliness and warmth makes dining here a true pleasure. The Opening of the Year for 2024 goes to The Guild . ICD Brookfield is now home to somewhere that really does offer something for everyone. From a coffee shop to a greenhouse-style meeting room, a cocktail bar to a choice of two restaurants, whatever it is you’re looking for, you’ll find it here. The Guild is strikingly designed, deservedly busy, run with confidence and ability, and is a great addition to the city’s dining scene.
