Not every traveller heading to Finland needs a visa. Before you travel, check the information below to determine whether you must apply for a visa or not.

Who Needs a Visa?

You will have to apply for a visa when travelling to Finland if you are:

  • A citizen of a non-EU country that has not reached a visa liberalisation agreement with the EU .
  • A citizen of a non-EU country that has reached a visa liberalisation agreement with the EU, but you were rejected from entering Finland or any other Schengen country visa-free.

Exemptions from Visa Requirements

You are exempt from applying for a visa to enter Finland if you fall into any of the following categories:

  • You are a citizen of an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland.
  • You hold a passport from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, or any other country with a visa liberalisation agreement with the EU .
  • You possess a valid residence permit from any country within the Schengen area.

For those exempt from a visa, check out the required documents for entry into Finland. It’s always good to be prepared!

Understand the Type of Visa You Need

If your plan involves a short trip to Finland, lasting up to 90 days, whether it’s for tourism, visiting friends and family, or business purposes, you should apply for a short-stay visa, commonly referred to as a C-type or Schengen Visa.

However, if your visit involves other purposes or you plan to stay in Finland for more than 90 days, you’ll need a long-stay visa, also known as a D-type visa.

Short-Stay Visa Types

A Finland Schengen visa follows a standardised application process, offering a single type of visa that can be granted for various reasons. Those include:

  • Tourism Visa. If you’re planning a sightseeing or leisure trip to Finland, you need a tourist visa.
  • Visiting Family or Friends Visa. For visits to friends or family in Finland, you’ll need this visa type along with an invitation letter from your hosts.
  • Business Visa . If travelling to Finland for professional reasons, apply for a business visa, supported by an invitation from the hosting company or organisation.
  • Cultural Activities Visa . If attending cultural events like festivals, filming, or religious activities in Finland, apply for a cultural visa.
  • Official Visit Visa. If your journey to Finland involves official government duties, you need the visa for official visits.
  • Medical Treatment Visa . If you’re seeking medical care at a Finnish healthcare facility, apply for the medical treatment visa.
  • Short-Term Study Visa . If enrolled in a short-term study program in Finland, you’ll need the visa for short-term studies.

Determine Where to Lodge Your Application

You can lodge your application for a Finnish visa at a VFS Global application centre or at a Finnish embassy or consulate. If there is no Finnish embassy in your country of residence you have to apply for a visa at another Schengen embassy which is representing Finland.

If you live in one of these countries, lodge your application in a VFS Global centre:

  • Philippines
  • South Africa
  • United Arab Emirates

Another Schengen Embassy or Consulate Representing Finland

Here’s where to apply for a Finnish visa if Finland has outsourced visa applications to other embassies or consulates:

Who Should Apply for a Schengen Visa at the Finnish Embassy/Consulate/VAC?

If Finland is the only country in the Schengen Area you plan to visit, it’s straightforward – apply at the Finnish embassy/consulate or the authorized Visa Application Center (VAC) in your country of residence.

However, if your journey includes Finland and at least one more Schengen state, apply at the Finnish embassy/consulate/VAC in your country of residence only if:

You will spend more days in Finland than in the other Schengen countries. You will spend an equal amount of time in each country, but you are starting your Schengen adventure by entering through Finland.

You can’t apply for a short-stay Finnish visa from a country where you are currently on a short-stay visa. You must hold a residence permit in the country where you are applying.

For more in-depth details, please refer to: How to Choose the Right Embassy/Consulate/VAC to Submit the Visa Application

See for example, the VFS centre in Algeria:

Schedule an Appointment With a Finnish Embassy

If you live in a country with a Finnish embassy,  you have to schedule your appointment by contacting the embassy. See all of Finland’s representative offices abroad here .

Click on the Finnish embassy in your country of residence, and you will be redirected to a page containing its contact information and instructions on how to set an appointment.

Schedule an Appointment With Another Schengen Embassy or Consulate Representing Finland

If you live in a country which has no VFS or Finnish embassy, then other Schengen embassies are in charge of processing Finland visa applications. See here for where to apply based on where you live .

Follow the instructions on the specific embassy’s website.

When Should You Set an Appointment?

It takes about 15 days to process your application for a Finland visa. This means, you have to set your appointment at least 15 days before you plan to travel.

Taking into account the waiting time and the availability of appointment slots, we suggest you start checking for available appointments at least one month before your trip, but preferably earlier.

The earliest you can apply for a visa is six months before you plan to travel to Finland.

Appointment Fee

Scheduling an appointment for a Finnish visa application is free of charge. However, there are other fees associated with the application process, which we have outlined below in this article.

We highly advise against scheduling appointments through non-accredited third-party intermediaries, as they may add extra fees.

Can I Change or Cancel my Appointment?

You cannot change your appointment, but you can cancel the current appointment you have and then request a new one.

To cancel your appointment, you need to use the “cancellation appointment services” available on the websites of each visa application centre. Please note that cancellations are available only well in advance (a minimum of one or two days) but not on the day of the appointment itself.

Collect the Necessary Documents for a Finland Visa

To meet the short-term stay visa requirements for Finland, applicants must submit the following documents to the Finnish embassy or consulate:

  • The Finnish Schengen visa application form .
  • Documents generally required for any Schengen visa application .
  • Schengen visa insurance . The insurance should have a minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies and include repatriation in the event of death.

On top of the required documents, you may need to submit any additional documents which the Finnish embassy requests.

Each visa application undergoes a personalized review, so the required documents may differ. The Finnish authorities may also ask for additional documentation in some cases.

Please ensure that you have all the documents with you since you may risk getting your visa denied if something is missing from your application.

Understanding the Requirement for Travel Insurance

Travel Medical Insurance is compulsory for Schengen visas under Regulation (EU) 2009/810 of the European Parliament.

Finnish visa applicants can obtain visa insurance from either Europ Assistance or vti.travel , a European insurance comparison website, comparing insurance policies of AXA, Allianz, Europ Assistance and Mutuaide.

These insurance providers are acknowledged and accepted by Finnish Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Moreover, you can cancel the insurance at no cost by submitting proof of Finnish visa rejection.

Minimum Bank Balance

Other ways to prove financial subsistence for schengen visa, attend your visa appointment.

On the day of your appointment, you have to submit the checklist of required documents along with the signed application form. Make sure to arrive on time and be presentable.

That day, you also have to submit your biometric information (fingerprints), pay the visa fee, as well as have a short interview.

You have to submit your fingerprints and a biometric picture in order for your visa application to be processed. During the online application form, you have to check off whether you have submitted your fingerprints in the last 59 months—if yes, you don’t need to submit them again.

Children under the age of 12 are also exempt from submitting fingerprint scans.

Application Fee

When applying for a Finland Schengen visa, you will be required to pay an €90 visa processing fee . Typically, you can pay in cash or via debit/credit card when you submit your application—sometimes, you have to pay beforehand though a payment slip, in which case you have to submit the payment receipt.

In either case, make sure you check with the VFS centre or embassy website in regards to the payment of the visa fee.

Visa Interview

On the visa appointment, the person accepting your application may ask questions regarding your trip, whether you know someone in Finland, accommodation, trip itinerary, as well as personal information (where you work/study, what you work/study, family-related questions), etc.

See some of the most commonly-asked questions asked during visa interviews.

Can someone else apply on my behalf.

Someone else can apply for a Finland visa on your behalf under certain conditions:

  • You may authorise a representative (like a family member, friend, or visa agent) to submit your application if you provide an official letter of authorization.
  • All required documentation must still be provided, regardless of who submits the application.
  • You might need to appear in person for biometrics (fingerprints and photo) if it’s your first application or if your biometrics are not on file within the last five years.

Generally, the most common third party who applies for a visa on your behalf are travel agencies or visa application centres. These are authorised by embassies to submit applications on behalf of applicants.

Wait for the Visa to Process

After you submit your application, the processing time for your visa is typically up to 15 days. However, this duration may be extended to 30 days for various reasons, such as the need for additional review of your application or a high number of applications, among others.

Track Your Application

If you applied through a VFS application centre, you can track your application online through the VFS website. The Track your application button is on the navigation bar at the top of the website.

You have to enter the Reference Number present on the invoice/receipt issued by the Visa Application Centre as well as either your birth date or last name (depending on the centre).

If Your Visa is Approved

If your Finland visa is approved, you can enter Finland within the dates specified on your Schengen visa sticker—the sticker also contains how many days you can stay in Finland or the Schengen Area in total.

If Your Visa is Rejected

If your Finland visa application is rejected, the reason for the rejection will be stated on the decision letter . You can either:

  • Apply for the visa again. If you had a mistake in your application which led to the refusal, you can just fix it and submit another application, hoping for a positive outcome.
  • Request a review of the visa decision. If you feel your visa was unfairly rejected, you can request an administrative review of the decision from the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Requesting Review of a Negative Visa Decision

If you are unhappy with the decision made by a Finnish mission regarding your visa application (refusal of the visa), you can request an administrative review of the decision from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Submit a written request for review. This request should be made in Finnish or Swedish within 30 days of receiving the visa decision. Instructions for submitting the request will be included with the decision you received.
  • Pay the processing fee . The fee for an administrative review is EUR 255. You must pay this fee before your request will be processed.
  • Wait for the Ministry’s decision. The Ministry will review your request and issue a decision.

If you disagree with the Ministry’s decision on your review request, you can appeal to the Helsinki Administrative Court. The appeal process also has specific requirements and fees, so be sure to consult the instructions provided by the Ministry for more details.

Will I Get a Refund If My Visa Is Rejected?

No, even if your visa application is rejected, you will not get a refund of the visa fee. Visa fees are non-refundable.

Collect Your Passport

After a decision is made, you can collect your passport from the embassy or visa application centre where you applied. You can pick it up in-person or—if it is available—they may send it to you via courier. For this, there is an additional fee.

How to Enter Finland?

To enter Finland, you must present the following documents on the day of your travel to the country. These documents include:

  • Valid passport together with the visa sticker.
  • Valid travel health insurance.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Documentation of sufficient financial funds.
  • Booked return flight ticket.

The dates when you can enter Finland are indicated on your visa sticker, which is attached to your passport.

Extending Your Stay

It is not allowed to extend your stay in Finland if you enter with a Schengen visa. Visa extensions are only allowed when there are exceptional circumstances, such as:

  • Unforeseen circumstances preventing travel. Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond your control or for humanitarian reasons (for example, if you or your travel companion suddenly get ill or your flight is cancelled due to a strike or weather conditions).
  • Compelling reasons for extension. You have strong personal reasons that make a visa extension necessary, such as important negotiations exceeding expectations, worsening health of a relative. You need sufficient evidence to support your request.

You have to submit your request for visa extension to a Finnish Police Station . For unforeseen circumstances the application is free, but for compelling personal reasons there is a EUR 30 fee.

Can I Work or Study in Finland With a Schengen Visa?

No, a Schengen visa does not permit employment in Finland. To work in Europe, you must apply for the appropriate visa/work permit. You can study only if it is a short-term study course which begins and ends within the validity period of your visa.

The updated application forms cover all-work based residence permits except the permits for seasonal workers and entrepreneurs.

For more information, see our  press release about the update (migri.fi).

Residence permit application for a spouse

This form is for you if you are applying for your first Finnish residence permit on the basis of family ties. Your spouse has a Finnish residence permit, or is applying for a Finnish residence permit at the same time as you, and you intend to move to Finland and to lead a family life with him or her. Your spouse is your husband or wife, your registered partner of the same gender or a cohabitee with whom you have lived in a marriage-like relationship for at least two years, or with whom you have joint care of a child. Issuing a residence permit requires that your means of support are secured in Finland by some other way than benefits paid by the state. Your means of support must be secured, for example, by income earned by your sponsor who lives in Finland or by pursuit of a trade. Secured means of support are not required in some exceptional circumstances.

Check that you have all the necessary attachments and information before you begin. If your application doesn't have the necessary documents, it will take longer to make a decision. You must have a valid passport and documentation on your family ties:

  • marriage certificate or certificate of registered partnership (legalised)
  • copy of the passport page containing personal data and copies of all pages with notes in your passport and in your spouse’s passport
  • proof of living together if you are applying on the basis of cohabitation, for example a tenancy agreement or an extract from a register of occupants, or alternatively a birth certificate with information on the child’s parents (legalised) and a certificate of joint custody of the child (legalised)
  • divorce certificate or a certificate of dissolution of registered partnership if you have or your spouse has previously been married or in a registered partnership and separated (legalised)
  • death certificate if you or your spouse is a widower or a widow (legalised)

Official certificates, such as birth and marriage certificates, must be legalised if they are not issued by an authority in a Nordic country or in an EU Member State. If the documents that are attached to the application are not in Finnish, Swedish or English, they must be accompanied by a translation into one of these languages by an authorised translator. You must present the original documents and their translations when you visit your service point to prove your identity. You must also attach the form for clarification of family ties (PK1_plus) to your application. The form must be filled in and signed by your spouse. If you do not have a valid passport that is approved by the Finnish authorities and you cannot obtain one due to circumstances beyond your control, you can attach a written statement instead of a passport copy where you explain why you cannot obtain a passport. You must also attach documents on your means of support to your application:

  • Your spouse’s bank statements from the past six months for all Finnish bank accounts the spouse can use
  • Copy of your spouse’s latest tax card, tax decision and tax return
  • Copy of your spouse’s employment contract
  • Documents concerning your spouse’s/your business, if you have a business
  • Copy of your own employment contract, if you will be working in Finland
  • Document concerning your spouse’s/your pension, if you receive pension
  • Report on other income or assets that you can transfer to Finland

If your spouse is applying at the same time on the basis of employment, a copy of their employment contract or offer is sufficient.

Fill in the application and choose your service point

Complete the application form and attach all the required documents. Select your service point. The service point is where you prove your identity. You will find more information at migri.fi/en/identification . If you are applying for a permit abroad, visit a Finnish embassy or consulate. If you are applying in Finland, visit a Migri service point. Please take into account that the service points can be very busy. If you are in Finland, you can book an appointment before submitting an application in Migri's appointments system . If you are abroad, contact the embassy or consulate directly.

Pay and submit the application

The processing of an application is subject to a fee. You can pay the processing fee with most credit cards, or use the online banking services provided by Finnish banks. You can also pay the processing fee at the embassy or at the Migri service point during your visit to prove your identity.

Visit the selected authority to prove your identity

When you have submitted your application via the e-service, you must visit the service point you selected in order to prove your identity, to present the original copies of the attachments required for your application and to have your fingerprints taken. Remember to take a passport photo with you. Passport photo guidelines can be found on the website of the Finnish police. You have three months to visit your service point, or your application will be rejected.

Follow the processing

It is difficult to estimate the exact processing time of an individual application made on the basis of family ties. For example, if further clarifications are needed for the application and if the required information cannot be obtained from documents but an oral hearing must be arranged, this will affect the processing time. According to the Aliens Act, residence permit applications made on the basis of family ties are processed, as a rule, within nine months. You can follow the processing of your application in the e-service. If further information or documents are required for your application, we will send you a request first and foremost through the e-service. The authorities can also contact your family member who lives in Finland. You will receive a notification when a decision has been made and can be read online.

TYPES OF FINNISH VISAS:

Along with understanding Finland visa requirements, it is good to know what are the different categories of visas available and which one you should ideally be applying for. In addition to a list of generic documents, which we will discuss later in the article, every visa type mentioned below needs the applicant to submit a few specific documents that may not be needed if they are applying for a different category of visa.

Tourist visa  – This is probably one of the most popular Finnish visas people apply for! This visa is meant for those looking to visit Finland for less than 90 days for leisure and recreation. According to Finland visa requirements, the following documents are required to be submitted especially for a tourist visa application to the embassy:

  • Invitation letter with the address and phone number from family member or sponsor – if applicable
  • Bank statement from the last 6 months
  • Passport copies

Business visa  – This visa is given to those who are planning to visit Finland for temporary work related purposes. However, do keep in mind that this does not grant the applicant to take up new employment in Finland. The documents required for applying for a business visa are:

  • Invitation letter from the Finnish company you will be visiting and their detailed address along with your travel dates
  • A letter from your employer stating/allowing your business travel
  • Proprietorship/Partnership documents
  • The invitation letter must also mention how the expenses of the applicant is going to be covered during his/her travel. It must be made clear whether it will be sponsored by the employer or the Finnish company.

Visa for visiting family and friends  – This visa is for those individuals planning to visit their family or friends in Finland. This type of Schengen visa is also granted for a period of 90 days. Apart from the usual set of documents, the following documents too have to be submitted for this visa:

  • A letter from the applicant stating who she/he is visiting, who covers the expenses and travel itinerary including countries to be visited during the trip.
  • Proof of sufficient funds of the invitor if he/she claims to bear all the costs (accommodation, travel etc.)
  • Original invitation letter and one photocopy. The invitation letter should state the required personal and contact details of the inviter and visitor (name, date of birth, address, phone number, e-mail), the purpose and duration of the visit, accommodation details including address and clarification of the relationship between the inviter and the visitor. The invitation letter must be signed by the inviter and dated.
  • A marriage certificate, if the applicant and the inviter are married. A certificate of a family relationship between the inviter and the applicant (such as a birth certificate) must also be submitted, in case of a family visit.

Visa for seamen  – This unique visa is only for seamen who are nationals from a country which is required to have a valid visa to enter the Schengen space or if they intend to join a ship that is (or will be) in a Schengen port. The following documents must be produced to the embassy if you want to apply for this category of visa:

  • Original cover letter from shipping company
  • Copy of contract with shipping company
  • Copy of CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate), a seafarer’s identity document
  • Original invitation letter from agent in Finland

GENERAL FINLAND VISA REQUIREMENTS:

  • Passport  – You must hold a valid passport to be able to apply to the Finnish embassy for a visa. Not only that, the passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months from when you send in your application. So even if you have a valid passport, if it is about to expire in the next 3 months, it will not be accepted by the embassy.
  • Photos  – 2 passport-sized photos need to be submitted as part of Finland visa requirements. The photos need to be clear and taken in well-lit conditions.
  • Proof of accommodation  – When applying for the visa, one of the documents that needs to be submitted is a proof of accommodation. It needs to show that you have either booked your own accommodation in Finland or have someone sponsoring your stay. This is one of the key components of the Finland visa requirements.
  • Proof of transportation  – This refers to documents showing proof of your  flight reservations , showing your travel dates and duration. It is basically an itinerary of your travel plans in Finland. This is another key component of the Finland visa requirements as outlined by the embassy.
  • Travel health insurance  – You must hold a valid and suitable health insurance plan covering the total number of days you will be staying in Finland. The minimum value of coverage should be EUR 30,000
  • Bank statement  – A document from your bank showing your monthly transactions for the past 3 months to be able to prove that you will be able to sustain yourself during the trip
  • No objection letter  – This letter is required to validate your current status and assure the embassy that your have permission to travel. A no objection letter is typically  obtained from your employer  or school authorities.

A Finland travel visa is a permit that allows Indian citizens, along with travellers from other countries requiring a visa, to enter and stay in Finland for a short period, usually up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. This visa is part of the Schengen agreement, which means it also allows travel to other Schengen Area countries. It's necessary for tourism, business visits, or family visits and requires an application process including document and biometric submission.

The Schengen Category C visa enables short-term, temporary travel within the Schengen Zone, limiting stays to no more than 90 days within any 180-day period. This visa is available in three formats:

  • Single-entry Visa: This permits the traveller a single entry into the destination country for a stay that can last up to 90 days within a 180-day window.
  • Double-entry Visa: This type allows the visa holder to enter the destination country twice, with the possibility of staying up to 90 days in total within the Schengen area across any 180-day span.
  • Multiple-entry Visa: Designed for numerous visits to the Schengen area, this visa does not permit the holder to exceed the specified duration of stay—up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. Importantly, a multiple-entry visa can remain valid for up to five years.

The processing duration for a Finland visa for Indian citizens may vary, typically ranging between 15 to 21 working days from the date the embassy receives the application and documents.

The Finland travel visa requirements to prove your financials are designed to ensure that applicants have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay in Finland. Here’s a simplified overview of what you need to know about these Finland travel visa requirements:

  • Proof of Sufficient Funds: Applicants must demonstrate that they have enough money to cover their expenses for the duration of their stay in Finland. You should have at least €50 per day of your stay. This amount is meant to cover your daily expenses including accommodation, meals, transportation, and any other personal expenses.
  • Bank Statements: One of the primary ways to prove financial sufficiency is through recent bank statements. These statements should cover the last three months to show a stable financial history. It is recommended to maintain a bank balance of INR 3,00,000 to apply for a Finland visa
  • Sponsorship: If someone is sponsoring your trip, you will need a signed letter of sponsorship from them. This letter should explain their relationship to you, the purpose of your visit, and a declaration that they will cover your expenses during your stay in Finland. The sponsor must also provide their financial documents, such as bank statements, to prove their ability to support you.
  • Employment Details: If employed, you may need to submit recent payslips and an employment contract or a letter from your employer. This letter should state your position, salary, duration of employment, and the purpose of your visit to Finland.

It’s crucial to check the most current and specific requirements on the official website of the Finnish embassy or consulate, or the visa application centre, as these guidelines can change and may vary based on individual circumstances.

If a visa application doesn't meet the required conditions, the visa will be denied. The decision to deny a visa, including the reasons for this decision, will be given on a form that follows the EU Visa Code rules.

If a visa has been issued but it turns out the conditions were not actually met, that visa will be cancelled. Similarly, if the conditions are no longer met after the visa has been issued, the visa will be revoked.

Reviewing a Visa Decision

If your visa application is refused, cancelled, or revoked, you can ask for a review of this decision by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The refusal letter will include instructions on how to request a review. This must be done within 30 days of receiving the decision, in Finnish or Swedish, and there is a €255 fee for processing this request.

If you disagree with the review decision from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, you can appeal to the Helsinki Administrative Court. This appeal must also be made within 30 days of receiving the review decision, in Finnish or Swedish, and there is a €270 fee for the court process. You can submit your appeal through a Finnish mission abroad or directly to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which will forward it to the court.

In conclusion, obtaining a Finland visa for Indians demands meticulous attention to several important aspects, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free application process for Indian nationals. It’s crucial to get acquainted with the visa requirements and the application process, compile all necessary documentation, and secure sufficient travel insurance coverage.

With adequate preparation and adherence to the required protocols, Indian tourists can anticipate a delightful visit to Finland.
