Tanzanian Beers – A sip of refreshment
Whether you are on safari in Tanzania enjoying a breath-taking sunset or sitting in a hammock on the beach in Zanzibar , it is always nice to replenish your thirst with a cold beer. Beer is important in Tanzania and it is consumed by millions every day. In fact, Tanzania ranks at number 6 in all of Africa in terms of beer consumption.
The country has two leading breweries, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) and Serengeti Breweries (SBL). TBL was founded in 1932, nationalised in 1976 and after 25 years of failed operations the company was bought by SABMiller who it still holds the majority of the shares today. Serengeti Breweries was founded in 1988 and is TBL’s closest competitors. Both these companies are vital to the Tanzanian economy.
So how many types of domestic beer brands are there in Tanzania? Eight! Most beers come as 500ml bottles although cans are also sold. In local bars, beers cost around 2500 shillings ($1,25) and in lodges you can pay between $3-5 per bottle.
Tanzanians’ five favourites are:
1. Kilimanjaro Beer
TBL Alcohol volume 4.5% Premium Lager A smooth nose, not too malty and not too strong. The flavour is crisp but light and it doesn’t have a strong after-taste. It is a great all-round light beer.
2. Serengeti Beer
SBL Alcohol volume 5.5% Premium Lager It has a slightly crisp taste with a strong malty finish. Its flavour is definitely unique and different from the other beers.
3. Safari Lager
TBL Alcohol volume 5.5 % Pale Lager A classic for many, this is one of the oldest beers on the market. Some find it to be very strong, the aroma varies from a hoppy note to a fruitier one. The after-taste can be quite bitter.
4. Ndovu Special Malt
TBL Alcohol volume 4.8% Pale Lager It has a bitter yet aromatic nose, has a good full body and a nice after-taste. Ndovu special malt is an excellent beer, however it is sold in 330ml bottles which means you pay more for less. This one is my favourite!
5. Tusker Beer
TBL Alcohol volume 4.2% Pale Lager This beer is quite bland, with some sweet notes and a soft finish.
In Tanzania beer is usually drunk with the national classic, nyama choma – barbequed meat. A useful phrase to learn at home and use in Tanzania are: ‘naomba bia baridi’ – please can I get a cold beer. Use this phrase to find out which one is your favourite.

I will like to buy Kilimanjaro lager , can you pls let me know if you ship to the uk ?
Kilimanjaro beer is the best, being my first day to taste it so it not possible transport to Malawi especially in Lilongwe
Dear Graz Smith,
thank you for your interest in Tanzanian beers. we are afraid that Shipping and Import regulations are not only complicated but the process can be expensive. The best way would be to get in contact with someone travelling from Tanzania and ask if he/she is willing to bring a few Kilimanjaro beers in the suitcase.
Last but not least Kilimanjaro beer is best enjoyed in the country for example as sundowner with views on Kilimanjaro.
Karibu sana
Any Kilimanjaro beer being distributed in the US? I regularly enjoy buying Tusker here.
unfortunately not that we know of. We hope that other users come across this article and have more information on this.
It might be a good idea to mention here that Tusker is originally a Kenyan beer. However it is still a nice, light East African beer. Maybe you can share here the location where the beer is found in the US!
I agree with you.. Kilimanjaro beer is best. and it’s among the top Tanzania’s beer brands. All in all, Safari Lager dominates them all. Although it’s taste can be quite bitter just like the Castle Lager but it’s one of the beer which has received international awards and recognition’s.
Some countries also sale Tanzanian beers hope they enjoy them well. As for myself Kilimanjaro is my brand… Just like me and my friends have this saying… “If you cant climb the mountain Kilimanjaro, then drink it”
In the first ever Africa Beer competition that took place in Ghana Safari Lager was judged to be the best beer in Africa.
Jambo Ally,
thank you very much for your contribution to this topic.
As for Castle Lager it is very true it is widely available in Tanzania and brewed by Tanzania Breweries Ltd, but it’s brewed under license and orginally a beer from the South African Breweries (SABMiller) to which the credits of the International Award should be given. However Tanzanian beers are a class for itself and the country can be proud about a large diversity of beer products.
The beer i was referring to regarding the Awards and recognition is SAFARI LAGER and not Castle Lager. As i know very well that CASTLE LAGER is produced under license. Even TUSKER is also under license as it’s owned by the East African Breweries.
But all in all, we should be proud of our beer brands as we have lots of them including BALIMI EXTRA LAGER which is most famous around the Lake zone region.
thanks for sharing this Information with us. That are great news and appologies that this was misunderstood somehow.
With all the different kind of beers in Tanzania seems to be a Safari of it’s own.
Where can I purchase some of your beees?
Dear Stacey,
the best would be to travel to Tanzania and join a Safari, Trekking Tour or relax on the Beach on the shores and Tanzanian beers are widely for sale in bars, groceries and many supermarkets. This is the best way to taste the flavors of Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro beer best. can i buy some in south africa plze HELP
Can one order Kilimanjaro to South Africa
Someone would make a fortune selling Kilimanjaro beer in the USA.
I enjoyed Kili on safari. Unable to find here in the states but we always have a few Tuskers on ice.
Kilimanjaro is a great beer wow.
Is Ndovu still available? Did not see it around during my latest visit to Tanzania.
Thank God I am now drinking from the fountain of life…
Ndovy special malt available in most of supermarket in Tanzania,.. Especially in Walmart(game) in mlimani city shopping mall
It has been a while that I had Ndovu in Tanzania but I agree with Nicodemus and at the same location was able to find the Ndovu “Red malt” special edition once.
How many calories are in Kilimanjaro beer? Small and large bottle?
Dear Mimi Aikido,
we can not answer this and we are not sure if it says that even on the label. Tanzanian regulations for labeling food/drinks are not the same as in other parts of the world. Unfortunately we don’t have it at hand to check for you.
will Kilimanjaro beer will ever come to the USA? will safari lager beer will ever come to the USA? will Serengeti beer will ever come to the USA?
Unfortunately we can not answer that question.
Do any of the Tanzania Beer brands come “on tap”?
Hello Johan,
as far as we know and according to our experience we have not seen Tanzanian beer from draught. It might be available at some Pubs in cities like Dar Es Salaam or Arusha but definitely not in the country side. Beer towers become more popular in some scenes also in Tanzania though.
I was Tanzania for a safari recently and enjoyed your beer. Do you have any beer glasses available for me to buy? Thanks
since it is not our nature of business, we are afraid but can’t help with that. Try writing to the breweries directly?
Hello I would like to ask Can yu give me the wholesale price of all the drinks of TBL brand
Hello Edbart,
since it is not our nature of business, we afraid but can’t help with that. Try writing to the breweries directly?

I love a cold safari…could the bitterness be reduced?

- Best Tanzanian Beers to refresh after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

- TranquilKilimanjaro
It’s always wonderful to quench your thirst with a cool beer, especially after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, heading on safari in Tanzania’s national parks like the Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, or relaxing on the sandy beaches of Zanzibar as you soak in the sun and cool breeze from the Indian ocean. Beer is quite popular in Tanzania, and millions of people drink it every day. Tanzania, in fact, is the sixth most beer-consuming country in Africa and this is evident in the many brands of beer at your disposal.
Tanzania Brewers Limited (TBL) and Serengeti Breweries are the two leading breweries in the nation (SBL). TBL was created in 1932, nationalized in 1976, and acquired by SABMiller after 25 years of failing operations. SABMiller still owns the majority of the shares today. TBL’s main competition is Serengeti Breweries, which was created in 1988. Both of these businesses are critical to Tanzania’s economy.
So, how many different domestic beer brands does Tanzania have? There are many brands here, your choice will depend on your taste but we will make your job easier here. The majority of beers are offered in 500ml bottles, however, cans are also available. At the time of writing this article ( Thur, 9th – Dec 2021)Beers cost roughly 1500 shillings – 2500 shillings ($1,25) in local taverns, and between $3 and $5 per bottle in lodges.
1. Kilimanjaro Premium Lager
4.5% alcohol by volume. Premium Lager made by TBL
A pleasant nose that is neither overly malty nor too strong. The flavor is fresh but not overpowering, and there is no lingering aftertaste. It’s a fantastic light beer for all occasions.
Since 1996, Tanzania Breweries Ltd (TBL) has made Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, an easy-drinking lager. It has a pleasant taste that comes from ingredients produced on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, as well as water as clean as the mountain’s ice-capped top. Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, or ‘Kili,’ as the Tanzanians call it, is simply Made to Flow!
The brand proudly shares its name with Mount Kilimanjaro, a world-famous destination that, like our company, rises tall and attracts many visitors. Since the first marathon on February 2, 2003, Kili has been the primary sponsor of the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon.
Learn more about the Kilimanjaro Marathon 2022.
2. Serengeti Beer
Premium Lager with a 5.5% alcohol by volume and NO SUGAR made by SBL.
It has a somewhat crisp flavor with a malty aftertaste. It has a distinct flavor that distinguishes it from other beers.
Serengeti Premium lager, produced by Serengeti Breweries, is one of Tanzania’s leading beer brands. It was re-launched in 2003 as a 100 percent malt beer and has since been a pioneer in many ways. In Tanzania, Serengeti premium lager is known as Chui (Swahili meaning Leopard) because to the black and gold leopard markings prominent on the brand’s label. The pictures of the leopard and acacia on the label represent the Serengeti National Park, with which the brand is affiliated. Brown bottles of 500ml and 330ml are available.
3. Safari Beer
Pale Lager with a 5.5% alcohol Volume made by TBL.
This is one of the oldest beers on the market and is considered a classic by many. It has a robust scent that ranges from a hoppy to a fruitier note, which some people find strong. It’s possible that the aftertaste will be rather bitter.
Safari beer is a pilsner that has a stronger taste, smooth, clean and refreshing with a light sweet malty hint.
4. Ndovu Special Malt
4.8% alcohol volume Pale Lager is a light-colored beer made by TBL. It has a bitter yet fragrant scent, a big body, and a pleasant finish. Ndovu special malt is agreat beer, but it’s only available in 330ml bottles, so you’re paying more for less. Ndovu Beer’s taste can be described as sweet corn, something mirky. A little thin, under-carbonated.
Pours a very light straw color with a thin white head that disappears as quickly as it rose. The nose brings forward a good amount of grain as well as some creamed corn
5. Tusker Beer
Pale Lager has a 4.2% alcohol volume made by TBL. It pours a golden straw color with a white head. The aroma is very sweet, almost all-malt. The taste is what I describe as a “rounded” sweetness.
Although it originally comes from Kenya, Tanzanians drink beer with nyama choma, or barbequed beef, which is a national dish. ‘Naomba bia baridi’ – please may I get a cool beer – is a great phrase to learn at home and use in Tanzania. Find out which one is your favorite by using this sentence.
6. Twiga Beer
4.5% Golden Ale and 5.6% Stout Alcohol Volume made by Twiga Brewery. TwigaBrew is Tanzania’s first Craft Brewery and Brewpub, with a focus on indigenous workmanship and tradition. Twiga Beers are premium handcrafted goods produced on the lush slopes of Mount Meru using the finest natural ingredients. TwigaBrew is a symbol of respect, admiration, and deep ties to nature and its vital resources. Their brewery, which is located within AIM Shopping Mall, is a buzzing gathering spot for Tanzania’s varied community as well as beer fans from all over Tanzania and beyond.
Twiga Beer comes in two flavours.
TWIGA STOUT
A dark beer with a light flavour of chocolate and coffee. 6.2% Vol. alcohol
A golden blonde Ale style beer with a fresh fruity flavour and 5.5% Vol. alcohol.
So far, these are the top 6 beers in Tanzania, the top 5 beers have been here for so long while the 6th option gets an honorable mention because it is the first craft brewery in Tanzania and they make great beer. The other beers worth trying out include Castle Lite beer, Serengeti Lite beer, Savannah, Flying fish, Balimi, Kibo Gold, and many more. Hope you have a great time climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with us and an equally great time rewarding your sweat with a cold beer from the Tanzanian slopes. Bon Sante!

A tasting of the most important beers in Tanzania:
Safari Lager (alc. 5,5%) – Tanzania Breweries Limited
The stout par excellence from Tanzania. This strong beer corresponds to a German export, maybe a little more dry. Available in 0.375 and 0.5 litre glass bottles. In local bars and shops, half a litre in a glass bottle costs 2,500 TSH (about 1€).
Tasting: The dark Safari beer has a strong and tart taste. Since the addition of sugar (see the article below) the bitter note is missing.
Serengeti Premium Lager (alc. 4,8%) und Serengeti Lite (alc. 4%) – Serengeti Breweries Limited
The most sold beer of the SBL brewery. Available in 0.375 and 0.5 litre glass bottles. This Tanzanian beer is the proud recipient of the Golden Award of the German Food Society (DLG) . The taste of Serengeti Premium Lager reminds one of a traditional Munich medium beer.
Tasting: This beer is brewed according to the German ‘ Reinheitsgebot ‘ – you can taste that, a palatable and sparkling beer. Our favourite beer in Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro Premium Lager (alc. 4,5%) – Tanzania Breweries Limited
One of the most famous beers in Tanzania. Available in 0.375 and 0.5 litre glass bottles and 0.33 litre aluminium cans. The beer costs about $2 to $5 at Silver/Gold Safari lodges. The mild beer would probably be labeled as a light export lager internationally.
Tasting: The light beer with a soft malt note is a good option e.g. for lunch. The lager is a little bit on the lean side however.
Castle Lager (alc. 5,0%) und Castle Lite (alc. 4%) – Tanzania Breweries Limited
Castle Lager is a medium beer brewed under licence. It originally comes from South Africa and is widely distributed and very well known there. The beer is sold in 0.5 and 0.375 litre glass bottles and is a little bit more expensive than the other local beers.
Tasting: The beer has a balanced taste with a slightly bitter note, reminiscent of a Pilsner. Unfortunately maize is now also an ingredient in this beer.
Ndovu Special Malt (alc. 4,8%) – Tanzania Breweries Limited
Ndovu Special Malt, unlike the other beers produced by TBL, is brewed using only water, hops, malt and yeast (no maize). The beer is sold in 0.375 liter glass bottles and is the most expensive local beer in Tanzania.
Tasting: A harmonious and balanced beer taste. Colour and fullness are excellent, it can compete with the best. If no Serengeti lager is available, I would recommend Ndovu Special Malt.
Eagle Lager (alc. 5,8%), Kibo Gold (5,5%), Pilsner Lager (5,0%)
These three beers belong to a new breed of cheap beers on the Tanzanian market. The beers are marketed by the companies SBL and TBL as a cheap budget variant. The low price is achieved by adding inferior ingredients such as corn starch or sorghum.
Tasting : After a little sip I strongly advise against these three new beer brands and happily refer to Serengeti Lager or Ndovu Special Malt.
Tusker Lager (alc. 4,2%) – Tanzania Breweries Limited
This beer, originally from Kenya, is probably the most famous beer from East Africa. It is named after an elephant bull that fatally injured one of the brewery’s founding fathers in an accident. Until a few years ago, this story could still be read on every Tusker beer label.
Tasting: Unfortunately Tusker Lager did not make it to the tasting, from my memory it was a very palatable and thin beer, maybe a little lean.
Raha Banana (alc. 10%) – Banana Investments Ltd.
A local specialty from Arusha. This banana beer is brewed by a medium-sized brewery in Arusha. The beer is only sold in small 0.33 litre bottles and cannot be found in tourist accommodation. If you want to try a banana beer, it is best to ask your local safari guide.
Tasting: Unusual but surprisingly good taste, unfiltered with a deposit at the bottom of the bottle – reminiscent of German ‘Weißbier’. The high alcohol content is hardly noticeable – please consume with caution.
Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) and Serengeti Breweries Ltd (SBL) are the two largest and most important breweries in Tanzania. TBL in particular can look back on a long history by Tanzanian standards; the first beer was brewed as early as 1932. At that time TBL became part of East African Breweries Limited (EABL). In the meantime the company has been bought by SAB Miller and is traded as a public limited company on the Dar es Salaam stock exchange. To keep the price of the beers low, TBL now unfortunatly adds corn starch, sorghum and even sugar to most of its beers sold in Tanzania. SBL has only existed since 1988 and with a 15% market share is the second largest brewery in Tanzania after TBL. The company originally was founded as Associated Breweries Limited with the main brand Serengeti Lager. In 2002 the company was renamed Serengeti Breweries Limited. Serengeti Lager has been awarded several times by the German Food Society (DLG) with the Golden Award and is brewed only with water, hops, malt and yeast.
Enjoy your cool beer after a long and hot Safari in the beautiful Tanzanian National Parks while watching the mystical sunset in the bush.
Karibu Tanzania!

The 11 Best Light Beers to Drink in 2023
Low in calories and alcohol, but high in taste.
Sarah Freeman is a freelance writer based in Chicago, specializing in beer, spirits, food and restaurants.
For all the enthusiasm surrounding the craft beer boom and its burly porters, full-bodied stouts and hoppy heavies, there’s a fact that shouldn’t get lost amidst the ever-expanding world of suds: light beer remains the once and future king of beers.
Light beer is a category that's defined as having a lower ABV (typically around 5%) and a lower amount of calories—or both—and it's a category that includes a lot of pale, crisp lagers. But while the sector may be dominated by those ever-present macrobrews that you'll recognize from commercials during televised sports, there's also a rapidly expanding subsection of light brews hailing from craft breweries. To help you navigate this ubiquitous and important category, we sought out the best light beers to drink today.
Best Overall
Night shift brewery nite lite craft light lager.
Region: Massachusetts | ABV: 4.3% ABV | Tasting Notes: Citrus, Bread, Corn
Within the past decade, craft brewers around the country have hopped (no pun intended) on the light lager bandwagon. While many of these beers came and went—the lager is a notoriously time-consuming beer to brew, so many smaller breweries don’t regularly offer one—Massachusetts’ Night Shift Brewing’s take on the trend is here to stay. At 4.3% ABV, Nite Lite is an effortlessly drinkable lager, with plenty of flavor and only 120 calories.
Best Budget
Miller lite lager beer.
Region: Wisconsin | ABV: 4.2% ABV | Tasting Notes: Malt, Hops, Slight sweetness
Known as the original light beer, award-winning Miller Lite has just 96 calories and 3.2 grams of carbs. Easy drinking with a classic golden hue, this beer has a Galena hops-driven aroma and a crisp, slightly sweet finish. This is about as dependable as a mainstream American pilsner gets.
Guinness Pub Draught Stout
Region: Ireland | ABV: 4.2% ABV | Tasting Notes: Chocolate, Caramel, Coffee
Surprised to see this iconic dark ale on our list? Most beer drinkers are familiar with the nitro smoothness, caramelized and chocolate character, and deep roasted coffee color of Guinness Draught. Still, at a low 4.2% ABV, it's technically a light beer. (Even Guinness Extra Stout boasts only a 5.6% ABV.) It’s also versatile enough to pair with Irish standards like soda bread or bangers and mash, or for use in beer cocktails, shots, and layered drinks.
Best Low-Carb
Lagunitas daytime ipa.
Region: California | ABV: 4% ABV | Tasting Notes: Citrus, Pine, Malt
Lagunitas DayTime IPA proves that even the notoriously-heavy India Pale Ale style can be done with a lighter touch: it clocks in at a mere 98 calories, 3 grams of carbs, and a 4% ABV. This craft beer doesn't sacrifice flavor, though—it’s easy drinking, hoppy, and balanced, bursting with citrus and tropical fruit, and offering a complexity many wouldn’t expect with such limited alcohol.

Best Japanese
Hitachino nest white ale.
Region: Japan | ABV: 5.5% ABV | Tasting Notes: Yeast, Citrus, Spice
After establishing themselves as sake producers in 1823, Kiuchi Brewery has been brewing beer as a family across eight generations, with this witbier at the forefront. Its creators call the light-bodied, Belgian-style white ale “soft and flavorful,” and they’re not wrong. Flavored with coriander, orange peel and nutmeg, it’s explosively fragrant and carbonated with a pleasantly dry finish.
Related: The Best Beer Glasses
Best Mexican
Tecate original.
Region: Mexico | ABV: 4.5% ABV | Tasting Notes: Malt, Bread, Sweet corn
Using the brand's long-trusted formula, Tecate Original has a reasonable 141 calories, 4.5% ABV, and a classic flavor profile that distinguishes it in blind taste tests. You’ll be hard-pressed to find something this accessible and full-flavored yet light-bodied. "The palate-cleansing effervescence and hint of sweet corn in Tecate makes it perfect not only for summer , but for anything fresh off the grill," says Anthony St. Clair, an author and long-time beer critic.

Allagash White
Region: Maine | ABV: 5.2% ABV | Tasting Notes: Yeast, Orange peel, Spice
Allagash’s brewers call this witbier their "interpretation of a traditional Belgian wheat beer," spiced with flavors of coriander and curaçao orange peel. Experts celebrate its mouthfeel and interplay of sweetness and bitterness. "One of my all-time favorites," says Merideth Canham-Nelson, an author and experienced beer traveler. "It has a refreshing balance of citrus and spiciness, [and it's] easy drinking with a lower ABV."
Related: The Best Beer Fridges
Best Pale Ale
Bell’s light hearted ale lo-cal ipa.
Region: Michigan | ABV: 3.7% ABV | Tasting Notes: Caramel malt, Pine, Citrus
A low-ABV, low-calorie IPA may sound like a myth—and, for a while, it was. Several years ago, however, Michigan’s Bell’s Brewing decided to take its cult classic Two-Hearted Ale and dial down the booze, resulting in a well-received younger sibling, Bell's Light-Hearted Ale. A blend of Centennial and Galaxy hops gives the beer its signature notes of citrus and pine, and at 3.7% ABV (and a mere 110 calories) it’s a flavorful brew that packs a lighter punch.
Related: The Best Beers
Best Belgian
Oude gueuze tilquin.
Region: Belgium | ABV: 6% ABV | Tasting Notes: Sour, Fruit, Barnyard
Belgium is not exactly known for moderation when it comes to the alcohol content of its beers: the mammoth Belgian quad, for example, can tip the scales at 10% ABV. But if you’re seeking the strong flavor profile of a Belgian beer paired with the light body and low alcohol content of a light beer, check out lambics. These spontaneous fermentation beers drink like wine, but tend to have an ABV around 6%. Oude Gueuze Tilquin is a traditional gueuze, blending one, two, and three years old lambics resulting in a tart and slightly fruity beer.
Related: The Best Nonalcoholic Beers
Best Hefeweizen
Primator hefeweizen.
Region: Czech Republic | ABV: 4.8% ABV | Tasting Notes: Citrus, Banana, Clove
At a smooth 4.8% ABV, Primator Hefeweizen is Bavarian in style (even though it's brewed in the nearby Czech Republic). It's also unfiltered, and built around malted wheat, malted barley, Saaz hops, proprietary yeast and pure mountain water. Its lively aromas of clove, fruit, and yeast are striking, and its flavors of banana, orange, and mango expand on that complexity. One of the best hefeweizens in the market, it was even voted "World's Best Beer" at the World Beer Awards in 2013. "This is a really solid Czech brewery nailing the style," says Kris Calef, owner of MonthlyClubs.com.
Best Pilsner
Notch brewing session pils.
Region: Massachusetts | ABV: 4% ABV | Tasting Notes: Malt, Pine, Spice
The pilsner, a style of lager originating in the Czech city of Plzeň in the 19th century, is among the most reliably light and refreshing categories in the beer world. Massachusetts’ Notch Brewing has plenty of options when it comes to easy-drinking beers, from Bavarian helles to Düsseldorf altbier. For crisp crushability, however, you can’t beat its Czech-style session pils. It hits all the right notes when it comes to delivering a crisp beer with herbal and hoppy notes at only 4% ABV.

Final Verdict
The craft beer industry has improved the light beer category by leaps and bounds. While there will always be a time and a place for a Miller Lite or a Tecate, if you want a beer that won’t weigh you down (but also won’t leave you questioning if you are, in fact, drinking a beer), reach for a craft option such as Night Shift’s Nite Lite ( view at Drizly ).
What to Look For
For decades Miller Light was synonymous with the slogan “tastes great, less filling.” Many light beers still try to live up to the motto, by offering easy-drinking beers that don’t skimp on the flavor. A quality light beer should be a beer you’d reach for whenever you’re in the mood for a less potent brew that still tastes like beer.
Is light beer made the same way as regular beer?
Unlike other beer styles—stout, lager, pale ale—the “light beer” category is less a strict category and more a qualifier, as there are light lagers, light IPAs, light wheat beers, etc. A beer is made “light” by reducing the gravity (the amount of fermentable sugars) in a beer, thus lowering the alcohol and calorie content. This is often primarily done by diluting the wort during the brewing process. There are other ways to lower the gravity of a beer—decoction mashing, for example—but these processes are sometimes too time-consuming and costly for breweries to endeavor.
What makes it light/what is considered light?
A light beer is any beer with a lower alcohol content, which therefore is lower in calories and often has a lighter body. The most common light beer style is the American lager, which also remains the most popular beer in the country, with Budweiser selling their venerable Bud Light by the tens of millions of barrels.
Is light beer good quality?
Light beer sometimes has a reputation of being a watered down version of its fuller bodied counterpart. In some cases, this is undeniably true. However, a recent spike in craft breweries experimenting with light beer styles has resulted in plenty of high quality light beers that do not skimp on flavor.
Does light beer have the same ABV as regular beer?
The ABV of most light beers is below 5% ABV, which is lower than more full-bodied, full alcohol styles.

This roundup was updated by Jesse Porter , whose first bar job ever was at a mountainside German restaurant in upstate New York, where steins full of refreshing lager could be found on every table. And although he's worked since then as a sommelier, a wine educator, and a spirits rep, his love for tasty light beer remains as fresh and intense as a good pilsner.

What better way to celebrate a successful safari than to crack open a cold one at the end of a long hot day, take that first refreshing sip and stare at the majesty of Africa around you? For almost as long as there have been people, they have been brewing beer. Across cultures and continents, the bacchanalian discovery of the delicious and intoxicating product of fermented cereals became ingrained in everyday life.
Like the rest of the world, Africa has a long-standing and merry history of brewing beer – both commercially and traditionally. Preparing (and consuming) indigenous beers is still a part of life, especially in rural areas and during customary celebrations. For many tribes, the rituals involved vary depending on specific events and require different vessels and formalities for each. Umqombothi , chibuku , changa’aa , khadi , hydromel … Africa is awash with distinctive traditional brews – some of which are more meal than drink!
While beer enthusiasts may protest in horror, the truth is that the basic beer recipe is not a complex one: some malted barley here, a handful of hops there, plenty of water and enough yeast to get the party started. However, brewers in Africa rely upon sorghum and maize and flavour the product with everything from fruits and flowers to roots and honey. These local techniques have been gradually incorporated in commercial, craft and boutique brewing practices to create flavours unique to each country.
Have a look at our list of unusual favourites below to guide your decision.

The Best Light Beers to Drink Now, According to Experts
Go beyond Bud Light.
Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.
According to the Oxford Companion to Beer , a light beer is one that has a significantly lower amount of calories than a comparable full-calorie version. Coors Brewing Company was the first to use the term with its introduction of Coors Light in the 1940s. Coors Light was discontinued at the start of World War II but revived in 1978 after the success of Miller Lite and its "Tastes great, less filling" advertising campaign. Bud Light followed in 1982, and today it's the most popular beer in America .
Decades later, beers that aren't too dark nor are they too heavy remain perennially popular. The following list isn't a popularity contest, though, and you won't find the brands that easily come to mind on it. From craft producers and a few brand-name breweries, here are the best light beers to sip all summer, and well, all year long
Night Shift Nite Lite Craft Light Lager
"This beer uses barley and real corn to replicate the taste of a big brand lite beer, but even more delicious. The corn makes it super light and crisp, with a hint of sweetness."—Kate Amos, General Manager, Marta , New York City
Bell's Brewery Light Hearted Ale
"Bell’s Light Hearted Ale is a solid choice, made with Centennial and Galaxy hops and taking no shortcuts with corn or rice. A real beer without all the extra fluff."— Alex Fletcher , Beverage Director for Hospitality Alliance, overseeing the cocktail program at Jaxon Beer Garden and the Hard Shake , Dallas
Jack's Abby Framingham Lager
"This beer is 100% barley. The brewery donates a portion of the proceeds to Framingham Downtown Renaissance to help care for their local community."—Kate Amos
Sunday Beer
"Based in Brooklyn, Sunday Beer is thoughtful about where they source their ingredients, and one percent of all sales is donated to various environmental and educational organizations to keep New York a healthy and clean place to live."—Kate Amos
Athletic Brewing Upside Dawn Non-Alcoholic Golden Ale
"NA beers are trending this summer as perfect options to drink anytime! This 50-calorie, refreshing, light beer is clean and balanced. It’s a light-bodied golden ale, brewed with organic Vienna Malt, paired with a combo of American hops that add earthiness, spice, and citrus characteristics. A bonus: it’s crafted to remove gluten. Enjoy all summer long after a long hike, a surf session, or with light summer cuisine."— Erin Swain , wine educator and sommelier at La Fin Kitchen & Lounge in Montauk
Michelob Ultra
Michelob Ultra clocks in at just 95 calories per bottle and 2.6 grams of carbohydrates per serving, making it among the lightest of light beers.
Yuengling Light Lager
With 99 calories per bottle, Yuengling Light isn't far behind Michelob Ultra. It was developed to mimic the full-flavor profile of the flagship Yuengling, with a caramel malt flavor and a smooth finish.
Omission Ultimate Light Golden Ale
For a full-flavored option that’s crafted to remove gluten, try Omission's golden ale made with citrusy hops.

The 20 Best Low-Calorie Beers, According to Beer Experts
You don't need extra carbs (or even alcohol for that matter) to have a great craft brew.
We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.
In the heat of the summer, there’s sometimes nothing better than a satisfying, ice-cold beer. Unfortunately, beers can be a source of “empty calories” or calories that don’t provide many nutrients. The good news is there are plenty of low-calorie or light beers available today that aren’t a complete buzzkill. Even better, there’s been so much innovation in the brewing industry that you don’t have to sacrifice the taste you love just to save on calories. “Beer is such a diverse beverage that brewers have a number of tools to use,” says Jeff Alworth , author of The Beer Bible .
But how do brewers actually reduce the calories in a beer? Companies start by lowering the number of carbohydrates that come from malt and grains, says Lucy Burningham , the author of My Beer Year . The alcohol content is also reduced. “One gram of alcohol contains about 7 calories,” explains Burningham. Still, when selecting a low-calorie beer, be mindful of overall carbohydrate content and added sugars in flavored varieties.
To help you find the best low-calorie beer for your taste buds, experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute sampled and assessed many, taking into account taste as well as ingredients. Other staff members added their favorite low-carb beers , as well as low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages to the list, so you can find a great-tasting brew, no matter what your mood.
Budweiser Select 55
One of the lightest lagers on the market — and the lowest calorie alcoholic beer on this list — this Bud comes in at only 55 calories with less than 2 carbs per can. Many reviewers of this refreshing, crisp option rate it highly for being the “ perfect summer beer ” that’s “ low alcohol, but enough to keep it interesting .”
Jester King Le Petit Prince
With 75 calories per can, this low-cal beer is a dry, unspiced table beer brewed in Texas. Jester King says they sought out to “make a low-alcohol beer that’s dry, drinkable, refreshing, crisp, hoppy with a little bit of beguiling yeast character that only wild fermentation with native yeast can create.” And they did just that. Reviewers like how “ well-balanced” it is, with “ fantastic, fruity flavors ” that give it some welcome tartness without a ton of calories.
Allagash River Trip Pale Ale
This light-bodied pale ale boasts crisp notes of citrus and melon, giving it the perfect flavor profile for a hot day . One reviewer, who ranks it highly, say it's “refreshing and light but still has some hop character ,” while another dubbed it “ perfect for summer porch drinking .”
Coors American Light Lager Beer
With a little over 100 calories per can, Coors Light lives up to its name. And it's a mainstay in many coolers for good reason: Reviewers frequently rate it highly for being a refreshing option on a hot summer day , whether you’re at the beach or lounging at an all-day barbecue.
Yuengling Light Lager Beer
Yuengling is often a top pick among beer drinkers and this light version — with less than 100 calories — packs a crisp punch that maintains the same flavor profile of their flagship beverage that’s known for its caramel malt flavor and mild hop character. Reviewers of this beloved brew have crowned it the “ one of the best light beers on the market ” while others note that it’s “ very tasty, not bitter ” and an “ excellent drinkable blend of light flavor, with next to no guilt for drinkers that want to watch calories and carbs. ”
Amstel Light
Amstel Light has been on the market for over 150 years and remains a crowd favorite as a sub-100 calorie thirst-quencher with its delicious mix of barley malt and hops . When you’re stocking the cooler this summer, this one is sure to be a reliable crowd pleaser .
Heineken Zero
This non-alcoholic beer from one of the industry heavyweights is also light on calories, making it a win-win when you want a beer without the buzz. With refreshingly fruity notes, our taster found it to be “ honestly impressive ” because “ it tastes so similar to actual Heineken. ”
RELATED: Best Non-Alcoholic Beers With Tons of Flavor
Harpoon American Flyer Light
One of the newest additions to the low-cal beer lineup is this refreshing lager from New England–based Harpoon. Tasters enjoyed its "crisp, summery flavor," and said it would be a good accompaniment to a meal, since the very light flavor wouldn't overpower the food. And you can feel good about drinking it: A portion of the proceeds helps fund scholarships for families of fallen service members and first responders.
Corona Premier
A lighter spin on the classic beer to drink down with your favorite tacos — or with anything, really — Corona Premier is similar to the Corona you already love, but it contains fewer calories and carbs. "It has a light sweetness and grassiness that improves with a squeeze of lime," one of our testers said. This lager sort of tastes like your favorite seltzer, just hoppier.
RELATED : Best Low-Carb and Keto-Friendly Beers
Athletic Brewing Co. Run Wild Non-Alcoholic IPA
This nonalcoholic IPA came recommended by multiple tasters, thanks to its “ crisp, not too hoppy ” appeal. It also has the same level of carbonation as a beer, which helps mimic the real thing. Brewed with a blend of five Northwest hops, it’s bound to win over craft beer lovers. With nearly 2,000 five-star reviews, it already has. Many reviewers noted that it earns high marks for its “ real IPA taste ” that’s “ light, complex, snappy .”
Michelob Ultra Pure Gold
At just 85 calories per bottle, Michelob Ultra Pure Gold is one of the beers on this list with the fewest calories, but that doesn't mean it's any less tasty than the others . The refreshing flavor is slightly citrusy and the brew has a super lightweight mouth feel. Bonus points to make you feel good while you sip: It's USDA-certified organic and free of artificial colors and flavors.
Michelob Ultra Superior Light Beer
Americans have been downing Michelobs for more than a century, making it as familiar as that old friend sitting down at the end of the bar. Michelob Ultra has a light malty taste and subtle citrus aroma . An extended mashing process ensures that its texture is super smooth. And you won't find any artificial colors or flavors in this brew.
Heineken Light
Heineken consistently ranks as one of the most popular beers in the U.S., and the Light version maintains the flavors that have made it such a perennial favorite. H eineken Light is lean, fruity and slightly sweet — with a lighter feel and fewer calories than the original. It has just the right amount of earthiness that adds a layer of sophistication without adding heaviness. Our testers loved the subtle malt flavor and light bitterness.
Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA
If you want to enjoy a light beer that's a little more flavorful, try this one from Dogfish Head, which is known for its fruity brews. This one has notes of pineapple, coconut and citrus. It's also made with monk fruit to cut down on sugar content, which delivers the punch of a traditional IPA without the extra calories.
Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher Sparkling Hop Water
Tasters in the Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen are big fans of this nonalcoholic option, remarking that it “ tastes like beer but has sparkling water vibes .” Other reviewers note that it’s “ not too sweet ” and has “ good hop flavor ,” making it a solid option for IPA lovers looking to limit their alcohol consumption. Another bonus: This dry-hopped sparkling water has zero calories or carbs.
Miller Lite
When you want to go with a classic, reach into the cooler for a Miller Lite — it delivers a clean, crisp taste without being watery. If you don't like beer that's too hoppy or too bitter, this one will be right up your alley.
Kona Brewing Co. Light Blonde Ale
Founded in Hawaii, Kona Brewing Co. refers to all its beers as “liquid aloha.” This lower-calorie option goes especially well with grilled seafood. The flavor is sweet and bright, just like a perfect island day. "It's a great summer beer. Light, crisp and refreshing," one of our testers said.
Guinness Draught Stout
You may think of dark and creamy Guinness Stout as a heavy beer, but this rich-tasting Irish brew is actually low in calories. "Guinness Draught is creamy in texture but not heavy," one of our testers commented, adding that it has notes of coffee and chocolate. The taste will linger in your mouth; it's one to savor.
Lagunitas DayTime IPA
Created in Northern California, Lagunitas has a laid-back vibe, and this IPA is perfect for a relaxing afternoon (hence the name). "Fruity flavors and a low ABV make this a great hot weather, easy drinking pick," one of our testers said of Lagunitas Daytime IPA. Expect notes of pineapple, melon, grape and lemongrass.

Light beers are the most popular beer style in the world. What they lack in a robust flavor profile, they make up with endless refreshment and fewer calories than typical beers.
Even craft beer drinkers have developed a taste for easy drinking beers, and craft breweries have released their own interpretation aimed at thirst quenching their niche followers while the brewery adds a product that appeals to the masses.
The United States has plenty of light beers, homegrown and imported. We look closely at some of the best light beer offerings available today.
1. Michelob Ultra
Type: Light Lager | ABV: 4.2% | Calories: 95
Michelob Ultra rules the high-end light beer category. The sleek packaging, celebrity endorsements, and hi-vis sponsorships have helped the brand grow, but the beer is actually quite tasty for beer drinkers.
This well-balanced beer has earned all of its limelight and is a fixture on the links or in your fridge.

2. Corona Light
Type: Light Lager | ABV: 4.5% | Calories: 99
Light beer has a bad reputation for being thin, watery, and flavorless. They don’t taste like anything, let alone beer!
Not so with Corona Light. This low-calorie offering of the Corona brand tastes like an imported pilsner. Beer drinkers who feel stuck in a sea of light beers should know that if they need a lifesaver, they should grab a Corona Light.

3. Cigar City Jai Low
Type: Low ABV IPA | ABV: 4% | Calories: 100
Craft beer and light beer didn’t used to occupy the same space. Not anymore. Florida’s Cigar City has found success by spinning off their craft beer drinker favorite, Jai Lai IPA, with a lower calorie, light IPA called Jai Low.
The beer offers the hoppy goodness of the brewer’s flagship IPA with few calories.
4. Bud Light
Type: Light Lager | ABV: 4.2% | Calories: 110
You know what’s a really good beer? Bud Light! What is it with mass appeal that makes you believe that a product is not good quality?
Bud Light is everywhere for a reason. It’s simply an exceptional drinking beer . Perfect for almost any situation. If you’re hunting for a crisp lager, try this classic again.
5. Corona Premier
Type: Light Beer| ABV: 4% | Calories: 90
I am practically certain that Corona Premier exists to compete with Michelob Ultra. A lot of large breweries have followed this MO.
However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing; this ultra-premium beer is light tasting without being thin and flavorless.
Just because you’re cutting calories doesn’t mean you should have to cut out the taste.
- Corona Premier vs Corona Extra
- How Many Calories In Corona Premier?
6. Busch Light
Type: Light Beer | ABV: 4.1% | Calories: 95
Light beer is part of Americana—the midwestern-y vibes of ice fishing, deer hunting, canoeing, or chopping wood.
I know I don’t get it, but plenty of people would be caught dead chopping wood without a light beer nearby, specifically Busch Light.
Busch Light is a sub-premium light beer (think the opposite of Michelob Ultra) that is a really refreshing lager without the need for a slick can or sponsorship at the Masters. It’s what light beer is about and should always be.

7. Nite Lite
Type: Light Beer | ABV: 4.3%| Calories: 120
Mite Lite is an American light lager from Night Shift Brewing in Massachusetts.
The brewery was among the first craft brands to jump on the light beer bandwagon.
The beer has been very successful for them, and I think craft beer fans like it because it isn’t lightened with preservatives, corn syrup, or artificial flavors. It’s just a good quality crisp lager to enjoy on a hot day at the beach.
8. Miller Lite
Type: Light Beer | ABV: 4.2% | Calories: 96
Miller Lite is the original light beer. It was the first to find commercial success by using enzymes in the brewing process to brew a beer with fewer calories. In typical beers, the yeast can’t consume all of the sugar provided by malted barley.
By adding enzymes, long sugar chains are broken down further than is normal. This allows the yeast to consume these fermentable sugars, thereby reducing calories that would remain in the beer.

9. Kona Light Blonde Ale
Type: Light Beer | ABV: 4.2% | Calories: 99
Light beer and the beach go hand in hand. But that doesn’t mean you always want the same light lager when enjoying the beach.
Kona’s light beer is a blonde ale with mango added for a subtle tropical vibe, whether watching the waves crash or sitting out on your porch.
The blonde ale has the same light body as light lagers, but it’s brewed with an ale yeast that blends well with the added fruit.
10. Amstel Light
Type: Light Beer| ABV: 3.5% | Calories: 95
In the US, all of the big beer makers have decided the perfect alcohol content for light lagers is 4.2 percent, but Dutch beer maker Amstel has decided that less alcohol really helps make their Amstel Light even more thirst quenching.
At only 3.5 percent, you won’t feel full or too tipsy after a few Amstels, but that still doesn’t mean you can hop behind the wheel.
11. Heineken Light
Type: Light Beer | ABV: 3.3% | Calories: 90
Heineken knows a thing or two about brewing crisp lagers. Their flagship is for sure a classic and an effortlessly drinkable lager. For Heineken fans who prefer a few less calorie s with just the right amount of flavor, they have the option of grabbing a Heineken light.
Heineken Light clocks in at a sessionable 3.3 percent ABV and has only 90 calories. Its a pale golden lager with a crisp flavor and lighter body.
The beer is brilliantly clear and looks beautiful in a long fluted beer glass .
12. Coors Light
Type: Light Beer | ABV: 4.2% | Calories: 102
One of the knocks on light beer is that they are too watery. A case in point is Coors Light, which is a very watery light beer. I don’t care for this beer compared to other light beers , but that doesn’t mean others don’t look for that in a light brew.
That’s why if you’re putting together a list of the best light beers, one would be silly not to include Coors Light in the mix.
- When Did Coors Light Come Out?
- How Many Calories in Coors Light?
Final Thoughts on the Best Light Beers
Light beer has taken the world by storm, so much so that when people ask for regular beer, chances are they are asking for a light lager.
Today, beer drinkers have plenty of options when choosing which low-cal beer they want to drink. From high-end to sub-premium, niche craft to commercial behemoths, the light beer category has found a way to offer something for everyone.
