Genteel streets lined with elegant brick town houses, acres of public greens and gardens, more colleges than are found in many states, and a church on almost every corner: Boston serves up slices of history and culture at every turn. Savvy spin-doctors of centuries past have made the town that cradled independence our nation's history and myth capital. More than ever, America's mother city serves up the bold and new with the old and true -- reflecting skyscrapers mirror Colonial steeples, and expressways zip around buildings whose hand-etched look recalls the scrimshaw era. Few places in America display their history so lovingly. Like a multitiered wedding cake, the city of Boston consists of discrete layers. The deepest layer is the historical base, the place where musket-bearing revolutionaries vowed to hang together or hang separately. The next tier, a dense spread of Brahmin fortune and fortitude, might be labeled the Hub. The Hub saw only journalistic accuracy in the hometown slogan "the Athens of America" and felt only pride in the label "Banned in Boston." Over that lies Beantown, home to the Red Sox faithful and the raucous Bruins fans that crowd Boston Garden. This is the city whose ethnic loyalties -- Irish, Italian, Asian, and African-American -- account for its many distinct neighborhoods. Crowning these layers are the students who throng the city's universities and colleges every fall, infuriating not a few but pleasing the rest with their infusion of high spirits and dollars from home. The best part for a visitor is that Boston can be experienced within a day or two. This is a remarkably compact city, whose labyrinthine streets will delight the walker, although they can -- and often do -- push drivers over the edge. An hour's stroll will take you from sites in the North End -- where bewigged icons from dusty high school history books are transformed into flesh-and-blood heroes -- to Beacon Hill's mansions where the Lowells spoke only to the Cabots and the Cabots spoke only to God. You can explore the country's oldest public park, the Boston Common, in the morning, tour a Back Bay Victorian in the afternoon, and in the evening dine on Szechuan seafood in Chinatown or gnocchi in the North End. Even following the Freedom Trail -- a self-guiding walking tour of famous American historic sites -- traverses the layers: historical, Hub, and Beantown. Boston has been first too many times -- the first public library, the first public schools, and the first subway system -- to concede an inch of civic pride to bigger and bolder cities. It still sees itself as a pioneer in culture -- both popular and rarefied. In 1858, Oliver Wendell Holmes -- philosopher and author of The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table -- called Boston "the hub of the solar system"; social inflation, however, soon raised the ante to "hub of the universe." For Bostonians that still feels about right.

Royal Naval Dockyard

Otherwise known as the “Gibraltar of the West,” the Royal Naval Dockyard fortifications in Sandys Parish were built in 1809 to compensate for British ports lost in the American Revolution. Convicts transported from Britain and Bermudian slaves built the fortifications from local limestone. In fact, British war ships set sail from this dock to attack Washington, DC during the War of 1812. Britain built the Royal Naval Dockyard in the West End as a buttress against everything from Napoleon’s threats to pirate attacks. Walk across the moat bridge into the Keep, our island’s largest fort, and relieve the past at the impressive Bermuda Maritime Museum. Imaginative redevelopment transformed this old naval installation into charming shops and restaurants. Stop by to climb the ramparts, eat savory fish ‘n’ chips, and visit a snorkel park. Now only a quick ferry ride from Hamilton, visitors love to dive into its historical artifacts and island culture. Royal Naval Dockyard at the island's West End is one of Bermuda's most popular attractions. Once a working fort built by Britain's Royal Navy in the 1800s, it's now a place for the Maritime museum, a craft market, theater, arts center, shops, restaurants, a night club and more. Few realize it, but the town of Bar Harbor encompasses everything from the Trenton Bridge to Otter Creek, from the town pier to Town Hill. Bar Harbor is comprised of 28,800 beautiful acres, is 28 miles long from west to east, and enjoys a coastline roughly as long. After cruising to Bermuda several times, I’ve put together a list of the very best things to do in Bermuda on a cruise. Whether you are looking for family-friendly activities, Bermuda beach excursions or something off the beaten path, these must-see Bermuda attractions won’t disappoint!

In this guide, I’ve included some useful Bermuda tips and information you need to know about this popular cruise destination, including how to get around and explore on your own.

Why Cruise to Bermuda?

The island of Bermuda has become a popular cruise destination for numerous reasons. A self governing British Overseas Territory, Bermuda has a comfortable sub-tropical climate. A misconception is that Bermuda is located in the Caribbean. However, Bermuda’s location is just 700 miles away from North Carolina, in the Atlantic ocean.

Convenient North-East Departures

Bermuda cruises have North East departures leaving from New York, New Jersey, Boston and Baltimore. This is a convenient for many Americans and Canadians who like to drive to their port or have a short flight.

Getting Around in Bermuda

King’s Wharf is a short walk to public transportation options. A shuttle or the local bus will take you to the beautiful pink beaches on the south shore of the island. The ferries are the best way to get to Hamilton Parish and St. George, where you’ll find many attractions and natural wonders.

You can purchase 1-3 day passes for the bus and ferry at the visitor’s center in Dockyard, steps away from your cruise ship.

Suggestions for Cruisers When Planning Your Bermuda itinerary

Remember that your ship will be docked at the cruise port for a night or two, depending on your itinerary. It’s a good idea to plan excursions that will be further from the cruise ship on day 1 and day 2. Then save the last day for activities that are close to the ship in the Royal Navy Dockyard .

Top Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

1. Horseshoe Bay Beach

Arguably the most famous beach in Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay Beach is about a 15 minute drive from the Royal Naval Dockyard cruise port. You’ll see long stretches of blush pink sand and striking rock formations, jutting out from the turquoise waters close by the shoreline.

You can get there by taking public transportation or a shuttle right from the cruise port. At about 7$ a person from port right down to the beach, the shuttle is very convenient. While there are other beaches nearby, including Warwick and Church Bay which you may also want to visit, you simply must see Horseshoe Bay!

Do not let the crowds scare you off – walk all the way past the crowds to the left. Continue past the first couple rock formations and it is Heaven!

2. Baby Beach

If you have young children check out Baby Beach immediately to the right. The rock formations insulate the cove area from rougher seas at the main beach and provide for great viewing of many fish and crabs!

3. Rum Bum Beach Bar and Beach House Restaurant

While you’re at Horseshoe Bay Beach, you can grab a bite to eat at the on-site take out restaurant along with a pretty good Rum Swizzle from the Beach Bar. While not inexpensive at about 10$ a drink, they’re quite good!

4. Tobacco Bay Beach

Located in St. George’s parish, Tobacco Bay Beach is considered to be one of the best Bermuda Beaches for snorkeling. While Tobacco Bay is known for it’s shallow and clear waters, perfect for seeing marine life, how Tobacco Beach got it’s name is interesting part of Bermuda’s history.

In the early 1600’s, a group of Castaways whose ship wrecked upon the reefs explored the island of Bermuda and it’s beautiful beaches. At this beach, they found wild tobacco growing. Hence, Tobacco Bay Beach was named .

Now don’t go looking for tobacco on your Bermuda cruise. There’s none to be found hundreds of years later, but the name “Tobacco Bay Beach” remains.

5. Hamilton City

Just a ferry ride away from Royal Navy Dockyard is Hamilton, the capital city of Bermuda. This truly is a beautiful small city to explore. If you enjoy history, consider spending a day in Hamilton to see the sights.

As you arrive in Hamilton, you’ll see Front Street, the main street lined with colorful pastel buildings facing the harbour. Hamilton is a great place to shop for jewelry, clothing, crafts made by local artisans, souvenirs and rum.

Tip:  There’s a department store called Marks & Spencers in walking distance from Hamilton Harbour.  It has a section in the back with delicious food imported from the UK. We buy some shortbread and jam cookies and striped mint candies called Humbugs. We bring them back as souvenirs for friends and family back home.

6. City of Hamilton Walking Tour

Spend a couple of hours walking around the city of Hamilton on a self-guided walking tour or take a tour with the local town crier. Start on Front Street, then explore up and down Queen Street, Cedar Avenue and Church Street.

Some interesting sights to see include government buildings such as the Cabinet Building, the Sessions House and the impressive City Hall. An interesting fact about Bermuda’s rich history, is that Bermuda’s parliament is the oldest in the British commonwealth.

If you enjoy museums and art, make sure to stop in at the Bermuda National Gallery.

7. Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

In the parish of Hamilton, you’ll also find some of Bermuda’s oldest historic churches. In particular, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is worth a visit. On weekdays it’s open to guests who wish to climb the tower, where you experience incredible views of Hamilton city.

8. Hamilton Harbour Nights

If your cruise ship will be in Bermuda on a Wednesday, you should plan on going to Hamilton’s Harbour Nights Festival. Hamilton Harbour Nights is a fun evening street fair with local vendors of handicrafts and delicious street food.

There are performers and a parade. You will also get to see a parade of local Gombey Dancers in traditional costumes. This is truly one of my all-time favorite Bermuda attractions. You won’t find this anywhere else!

How to get to Hamilton from the cruise port (Dockyard)

You simply take the 25 minute ferry ride from the ship dock to Hamilton. I suggest going a bit early as the ferry line does get long and it will be crowded. The ferry is 5$ per person each way, however depending on what you are planning during your visit to Bermuda, it may be worth buying a multi day pass for the ferry and bus.

If you head into town a couple hours before, you can visit some of the Government buildings and beautiful churches and perhaps do a bit of shopping. You can also check out some of the popular local restaurants and people watch.

9. Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ)

If you are looking for things to do in Bermuda with kids, this Aquarium, Zoo and Museum is a favorite for families. The super large aquarium is the main attraction, and is a living replica of Bermuda’s coral reef – so you’ll see a wide variety of Bermuda marine life here. You’ll see outdoor pools with seals and turtles as well.

Once you see the aquarium, visit the small zoo and interesting museum. Do check their website for opening hours and tour times.

10. Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves

In the parish of Hamilton, you will find the famous natural beauty of the Crystal Caves. This unique cave, home to underground shimmering stalactites set over a clear ocean fed lake is a sight you won’t soon forget!

You’ll be intrigued to know that Mark Twain himself was the first tourist to visit!

11. The Swizzle Inn

This well known pub and restaurant is home to the famous Rum Swizzle. If you’re planning a day, consider coming here for a casual lunch or dinner after visiting Crystal Caves or another sight. Consider getting a pitcher or original rum swizzles and sharing.

The Swizzle Inn is located across the street from Crystal Caves.

12. Bermuda’s National Drink – the Rum Swizzle

Bermuda is known for 2 drinks, the Rum Swizzle and the Dark and Stormy, both made with Goslings Rum. I’ve had both, but the Rum Swizzle is one of my all time favorites. I now even make a version of this drink at home!

You’ll find Rum Swizzles at quite a few bars and restaurants in Bermuda, however the original is at the Swizzle Inn.

13. Gibb’s Lighthouse

Located about 30 minutes away from the cruise port, accessible by bus or taxi, Gibb’s Lighthouse is a phenomenal spot to get a great bird’s eye view of western Bermuda and the cruise ship port.

There’s even a restaurant where you can enjoy afternoon tea. If you are a lover of Maritime History and British history, be sure to put this on your list of things to do while in Bermuda.

14. Parish of St. George Historical Reenactment

St. George is about 45 minutes away from  by ferry. It is a truly gorgeous ride, so well worth the trip!

St. George is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this is a good place to do a walking tour. You’ll find historical landmarks and museums, including the T ucker House Museum, The Unfinished Church and Fort-St. Catherine. 

What is the Must-Do ?

This town is quaint and slow paced and has some interesting sites to see, plus one of the quirkiest things you will see anywhere! The Ducking Stool in the town center, King’s Square.

St. George has 18th century historical re-enactments in King’s Square which include a Town Crier and “The Dunking of the Nagging Wench”.

Now, I bring my sense of humor when I travel and we just thought this was totally different.

Local actors participate and school children come watch. They just really have a fun time and involve the “audience” in the show. It is usually on Thursday’s at 12:30, however please check for the current schedule .

Things to do near the cruise ship in Bermuda – Royal Naval Dockyard/King’s Wharf

The Dockyard area near the cruise ship has quite a lot to do and see, however do plan your Bermuda itinerary carefully.

It may surprise you to know that even with 2 and 3 days in port, every year there are cruise passengers who miss the ship , as don’t return to the ship on time.

As a suggestion, use your first day or two to visit places further from the port and do excursions on your own. Your last day and evenings could be spent closer to the ship in the dockyard area.

Just note that the last day in Bermuda is always busier around the cruise port/Dockyard area.

15. Royal Naval Dockyard

The Royal Naval Dockyard has quite a few activities to do and places to visit, all within a short distance of your cruise ship. It’s well worth exploring and taking time to visit this part of Bermuda.

There’s even a free trolley if your feet are just a little tired from exploring Bermuda’s beaches and other attractions. You’ll find really pretty shops with Bermuda crafts and souvenirs, well as some nice, casual restaurants and pubs. There are museums, a beach area and several types of activities!

16. Snorkel Park Beach

This man-made beach is literally a 5 minute walk from the cruise ship dock. It’s a very calm small beach to visit if you have young children as well as if you’re looking for a beach day on the last day of your cruise. At 5$ to enter, its a great deal for nice, fun beach day.

They have snorkel gear that you can rent, or you can bring your own. Kayaks and other water sports equipment is available for rent.

17. Dolphin Quest

Right next to Snorkel Park, you’ll find Dolphin Quest. If you or your children have dreamed of swimming with dolphins and learning about them, this is offered within walking distance of the ship. Booking ahead is suggested.

18. National Museum of Bermuda

If you or your children enjoy learning about Bermuda’s History as well as seeing artifacts from sunken treasures, this is a great way to spend a few hours. There is also a play area for young children. The museum located in the Keep, Royal Naval Dockyard is free for children 16 and under and does have a charge for adults. Check their website for opening hours and rates.

19. Clock-tower Mall and Local Shops in Dockyard

The Clock-tower Mall, which is visible in many of the the pictures you’ll see of the Bermuda Cruise Port, is filled with small local shops. If you want to bring back some Bermuda perfume, some artist’s paintings or prints, handmade jewelry and other crafts, this is the place to find it.

Other shops in Dockyard include a rum cake shop and the glass blowing shop where they demonstrate their work. Some great clothing stores feature nautical themed clothing and made in Bermuda jewelry, candles and other collectibles.

20. Bermuda Treats to Eat or Take Home

My favorite souvenirs to bring home usually include some local treats. You can find some good options right in dockyard, close to your cruise ship.

21. Bermudas’s Moongate in Dockyard

Bermuda has several Moongates located around the island. Lucky for us cruisers, there is one right in Dockyard fairly close to the cruise ships.

Legend has it that if couples walk through the Moongate together, they’ll be blessed with a long and happy life together.

My husband and I first walked through this Moongate in 2008 during our first visit to Bermuda by cruise. Since then we’ve gone through it each and every time we’ve returned.

I’ve come to realize that this Moongate is part of many people’s Bermuda stories, from anniversaries, to engagements to just being together and stopping for a moment to create a vacation memory.

Bermuda Shore Excursions

It’s been said that Bermuda is best seen from the water. There are some great excursions including catamaran snorkeling , wave runners, glass bottom boats and more.

While you certainly don’t have to book and excursion, as there is plenty to do and see on your own, there is value to a local excursion. You can book these with your cruise ship, or directly with a local tour operator.

It can be a good idea to book online before you go as excursions are popular and can sell out.

22. Snorkeling and Boat Excursions

I quite like catamaran and boat excursions as for me it is the right amount of “organization”, local information from the tour operator or guide, and activity to make it an enjoyable part of our visit.

The last couple of years we’ve had great excursions with Rising Son Tours. We’ve appreciated the gorgeous catamarans, friendly and informative crew, and rum swizzles of course!

We were provided with noodles, paddle-boards and had an overall great time floating in the crystal clear waters.

If you’re not fond of getting into the water, consider a romantic Champagne Catamaran excursion at sunset or a boat tour of some of the beautiful and famous homes of Bermuda.

23. Port Royal Golf Course

Bermuda has some of the most beautiful and highly rated golf courses in the world, so if you are a golfer, put this on your wish list. Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton is the closest golf course to the ship and is easily accessible by bus or cab. Golf clubs, shoes and carts are all available to rent. However, if you are cruising to Bermuda it is very easy to bring your own golf clubs on board.

24. Tom Moore’s Jungle/Blue Hole Park

If you are looking for something different that is not often on the cruiser’s radar, make your way to Tom Moore’s Jungle in the parish of Hamilton. This nature reserve has wooded paths, mangroves, caves and grottos, including well known Blue Grotto. You’ll see a variety of birds and fish as well.

There’s always an interesting story in Bermuda: this nature reserve is named after Irish poet Tom Moore, who wrote poetry under a calabash tree in this reserve in 1844. The famous tree was destroyed in a hurricane several years ago, however its branches have begun to grow again.

25. Dining in Bermuda & Local Eats

Bermuda is a bit on the expensive side, as a lot is imported from the US or Britain. Since you are cruising, try to plan your day so that you can take advantage of eating some meals on the ship and some meals in Bermuda.

Some of the most popular pubs for both locals and tourists include the Hog Penny Pub or Flanagan’s Irish Pub in Hamilton. If you want to grab a bite close to the ship, a great spot is The Frog and Onion Pub.

A little place quite close to the cruise port that is distinctively local is Woody’s. It’s only about 5 minutes away by cab. I’ve unfortunately not eaten there yet, however I hear from the locals that they make a fabulous fish sandwich!

My favorite thing o do was on the other end of the island is an old NASA tracking station. Looking around old buildings and tracking equipment from the 60’s was cool. It also has over a two mile long runway from the old space. Shuttle days. Built for emergency landings of shuttle.

Saga's boutique luxury ocean cruise ships carry a maximum of 987 passengers each. The line's two ships, Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure, feature all-balcony cabins and depart from the Dover, Portsmouth and Tilbury cruise ports in England.

The British-inspired sailings are all-inclusive: Fares cover meals at all onboard restaurants as well as access to entertainment venues, Wi-Fi, and unlimited alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Prices also include excursions in certain ports of call, gratuities and chauffeur service from locations in the U.K. to the embarkation port. Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships since it debuted in 2005, carries 2,094 guests and 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to the Canary Islands , Spain and Portugal; the British Isles; Norway and Iceland; and the U.S., Caribbean and Canada.

Arcadia's five restaurants and 10 bars and cafes include Indian offerings with a British twist at Sindhu as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue, or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment at the Oasis Spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of Aurora. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic region, Spain and Portugal, and the U.S. and Canada, plus a world cruise. There are seven dining venues as well as 11 bars and cafes on the ship. Dine at the same time every evening at club-style restaurant Alexandria, or opt for a more flexible schedule at The Beach House or Medina. Cruisers can also sit down for a tasty meal at The Glass House, which serves casual bites paired with wines from around the world. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 652-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While many all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port not found on many other itineraries, including wine and culture itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a voyage to the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2023 and 2024, or a 12-night round-trip cruise from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2023 and 2024 with itineraries in destinations like various European countries, South Africa, Australia and Japan.

On board you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C or, if you prefer, Italian fare at Aqualina. First offered on Azamara Onward (the newest ship) before being expanded to the whole fleet, Atlas Bar serves innovative craft cocktails like the London Fog Martini or Tuscan Delight. Discoveries Lounge is another guest favorite for mingling with fellow cruisers at the end of the day. Wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner in the evenings.

Scenic Eclipse, touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht," offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (with 172 crew). The ship's Polar Class 6 rating enables it to sail to destinations like Antarctica. On these expedition-style voyages, the ship will carry only 200 guests and a total of 192 crew. All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; Egyptian cotton linens; and an in-suite minibar stocked with Champagne, wine and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and Scenic Neptune, an underwater submarine.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including fine dining at Lumière. This elegant French restaurant seats just 35 guests and features a multicourse degustation menu and a Champagne bar. For a less formal option, check out the Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern specialties – and the intimate teppanyaki grill experience – at Night Market @ Koko's. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample one (or several) of 100-plus whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, set sail on its inaugural voyage from Lisbon, Portugal , in mid-April 2023. The new ship is 550 feet in length and nearly identical to its sister ship, Scenic Eclipse. One addition to the vessel is the new Sky Deck. This space boasts 270-degree views, a bar with indoor and outdoor seating, and six private cabanas. What's more, the oval-shaped Sky Deck pool is the perfect place to kick back – and it's the place to be during the sail-away deck party, especially as the sun sets over the ocean.

Silversea's all-inclusive luxury ocean and expedition cruises offer voyages to more than 900 destinations across the seven continents. The line's 10 ultra-luxury ships and expedition vessels range in size from 51 to 364 suites and boast spacious ocean view accommodations – most with private verandas. Cruise fares cover door-to-door transfers from home to the ship, including airfare (business class in some destinations) and pre- and post-cruise hotel stays. On board, guests will have butler service, a nearly one-to-one ratio of guests to staff, 24-hour gourmet dining, premium alcoholic beverages, one complimentary shore excursion in each port, gratuities and more.

Silversea 's newest ship, Silver Nova, is set to debut in summer 2023. The luxury flagship of the line boasts an even more upscale guest experience in the suites with butler service for every accommodation, an impressive crew-to-guest ratio, more open spaces and top-notch cuisine. Silver Nova is also the first vessel in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is billed as a more sustainable cruise ship. Silver Nova will begin sailing in the Mediterranean before repositioning to the Caribbean and South America for the winter.

The second-newest ship in the fleet, Silver Endeavour, was regarded as one of the most luxurious expedition ships at sea when it launched in July 2022. With its Polar Class 6 rating, the ship visits the far ends of the Earth in the remote polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

Endeavour's features include state-of-the-art technology for navigation and exploration – and what Silversea bills as industry-leading ratios of Zodiac boats and experts to guests. Passengers also enjoy luxurious amenities among the ship's eight public decks, from the various dining and drinking venues to a two-story solarium with a swimming pool and whirlpool tub; cruisers can also take advantage of indoor and outdoor observation areas and a spa. You'll receive Silversea's high level of service with just 200 guests and 200 crew, providing an immersive and personalized experience aboard.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn also features an all-inclusive adult-focused experience on its five luxury ocean vessels and two expedition ships. The line's newest ship, Seabourn Venture, is an ultra-luxury Polar Class 6 purpose-built vessel with 132 ocean-front veranda suites. Seabourn Pursuit, the second expedition vessel, is scheduled to debut in fall 2023. The ships are equipped with two submarines for underwater exploration, kayaks and 24 Zodiacs. They will also each have a 24-person expedition team to explore far-reaching destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic and the Kimberley region of Australia, as well as places closer to home such as Iceland, South America and the British Isles.

Seabourn Ovation , the line's newest luxury cruise ship, accommodates up to 600 guests and offers amenities found on most of Seabourn 's ships: well-appointed oceanfront suites, living areas with dining tables, verandas, a nearly one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio and a Personal Suite Host to cater to your every need. World-class dining options are in partnership with renowned chef Thomas Keller, such as The Grill, Seabourn's signature restaurant. You'll also find health and wellness programs curated by Dr. Andrew Weil.

The "Seabourn Conversations" program is another highlight, where accomplished experts host adventures ashore, participate in meals and chat with guests on board the ship. Windstar's six intimate ships offer two styles of yachting that accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships. Windstar's adult-focused and casual – but still elegant – onboard experiences feature locally inspired top-notch dining (in partnership with the James Beard Foundation), guest lecturers, a water sports platform on all the ships, an open bridge policy and an engaging social environment.

While these larger ships are kid-friendly – and offer activities for families and children of all ages – adults can also find hidden retreats and dining and bar venues just for grown-ups. These spaces are typically quieter and away from the crowds. If you're traveling with (or without) children on one of these lines, you'll want to know the adults-only venues to plan your afternoon or evening out – sans kids.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers spaces created with adults in mind. On Celebrity Beyond and the new Celebrity Ascent (debuting in December 2023), guests can have a unique adults-only dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. The world-renowned Global Culinary Ambassador for the line, Daniel Boulud, created the menu at this elegant venue, incorporating dishes inspired by his travels. You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience at the restaurant.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area that's found on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships, including Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Apex . This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar – or order your favorite adult beverage while lounging in the hot tub.

Other adult-focused venues to check out on Celebrity Beyond and Apex and are the new elevated bar spaces. The Edge series World Class Bar – a popular spot on other Celebrity ships – features craft cocktails in a beautiful setting. And don't miss the two-story Sunset Bar on Celebrity Beyond, reimagined by interior designer and TV personality Nate Berkus. The aft location of the bar offers almost twice the space as previous iterations – plus beautiful wake views.

Princess Cruises

The Sanctuary, an adults-only retreat (for ages 18 and older), offers cruisers an escape from bustling public spaces on your ship. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites, spa cuisine and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship. On six ships – Sky Princess , Majestic Princess , Regal Princess , Royal Princess , Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess – adults can also enjoy an exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and bar area. On the newer vessels – Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – The Sanctuary also offers an expanded space with more cabanas.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners in partnership with Napa Valley's Caymus Vineyards. These special evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise, for just 12 guests in the Crown Grill specialty restaurant. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Carnival Cruise Line

Located on all of Carnival Cruise Line 's cruise ships , Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is a tranquil oasis hidden away from bustling venues and family-friendly areas. Access to the space is complimentary for passengers 21 and older; while there, guests can enjoy relaxing loungers, daybeds and whirlpools. Take in the warm sun and ocean breeze with a signature sangria in hand, or stop for a healthy meal at Fresh Creations Salad outlet (available on select ships) for an alfresco lunch. Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , even boasts several adults-only luxurious venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting (think Lumiere), Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. Norwegian Cruise Line has three adults-only outdoor venues for guests 18 and older (though specific spaces vary by ship). The venues feature ocean views, bars, plush seating and other amenities. On Norwegian 's Bliss , Joy , Escape , Getaway and Breakaway ships, the Vibe Beach Club sun deck invites guests to relax in oversized hot tubs and enjoy perks like a full-service bar and chilled towels. Norwegian Encore , one of the line's newest ships, boasts an impressive two-level beach club. On Norwegian Prima and soon-to-launch Norwegian Viva, an elevated beach club experience includes the line's first infinity hot tubs. You can purchase a multiday pass in advance for Vibe Beach Club, and cabana rentals are available for more privacy.

At Norwegian Epic 's Posh Beach Club, complimentary perks include fruit skewers, cold water spritzers and a snack menu. Single- or multiday passes are available to all adult cruisers, while travelers who book a Haven suite can access Posh Beach Club for free. Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Royal Caribbean International

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 16 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoors-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. On top of that, select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation. Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas.

Adults-only cruises are designed with adults in mind. From the staterooms, dining venues and lounges to the onboard entertainment and excursions ashore, adults-only cruises cater to adults 18 to 21 years of age and older. What you won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years or older. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private stretch of beach on the line's private island, Castaway Way – sans kids.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a kid-free night out on the ship.

Norwegian cruise mogul’s success secrets: Focus on the wealthy and absolutely no kids allowed

Torstein Hagen founded his cruise line with a few simple principles in mind. Among them: focus on the wealthy and intellectually curious; no nickel-and-diming; and no kids.

Almost three decades on, his Viking Holdings Ltd. is among the world’s biggest luxury cruise operators, and Hagen’s fortune will surpass $5 billion as the company completes its initial public offering in New York.

Viking  raised  $1.54 billion from the oversubscribed share sale, showing that investors are willing to pour money into a sector that was decimated by the Covid pandemic and now is rebounding.

The shares  priced near the top  of the marketed range, according to a  regulatory filing , valuing the company at around $10.4 billion. Hagen controls roughly half of the shares, making him the second-richest person in the industry after Carnival Corp. Chairman Micky Arison, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The listing also marks the pinnacle of an endeavor that, in Hagen’s  words , began with “two guys with two mobile phones and four river ships” seeking to woo customers who sought “more than just a vacation.” As the 81-year-old chief executive officer has often told journalists: Viking cruises are for the thinking person, not the drinking person.

Viking representatives didn’t respond to requests for comment on Bloomberg’s calculation of Hagen’s fortune.

Physics Degree

Born near Oslo, Hagen earned a degree in physics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University. After a stint in management consulting, he entered the cruise industry in the 1970s. Around two decades later, following multiple failed attempts to help buy or otherwise take control over cruise lines with different investor groups, Hagen led the purchase of the four river ships and formed Viking.

The company initially focused on cruises along rivers up and down Europe before expanding into ocean travel and special expeditions to places like Antarctica and the US Great Lakes. Based in Bermuda, Viking today operates 92 vessels and employs more than 10,000 people. 

Its target customers: affluent English speakers aged 55 or older, with time and money to explore the world. Last year, 90% of its clients came from North America, according to the company’s registration statement. In the US, the 55-plus cohort holds around three-quarters of the country’s household wealth, Federal Reserve  data  show. 

In recent years, Viking has sold stakes to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and alternative-asset manager TPG Inc. Both offloaded more shares in the offering than initially anticipated, according to a  filing .

Hagen didn’t sell stock. His daughter, Karine, who has been working for Viking since it was founded and is now executive vice president, will control a small stake of less than 1%.

Viking said proceeds from the offering will be used to “increase our capitalization and financial flexibility” given its “substantial indebtedness.” It had $5.4 billion of debt at the end of 2023.

In a letter to shareholders included in the registration statement, Hagen noted the company sees big growth potential among consumers in China and elsewhere around Asia. That would go beyond “China Outbound,” the cruise offering in Europe with full crews of Mandarin speakers that Viking launched in 2016. The firm is also exploring safaris and land tours.

“We view Viking as the premier provider of travel experiences for thinking people,” the billionaire wrote in the letter. “We do not try to be all things to all people.”
