WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Understanding Zamboanga City

  • Location: Zamboanga City, Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula)
  • Nicknames: Asia’s Latin City, City of Flowers
  • Language: Chavacano o Cabacano ang most common na ginagamit dito, isang Spanish-based Creole na mix ng Spanish at ibang native lnguages.
  • Modes of Payment: Cash.

How to get to Zamboanga City

Ang travel time ay 1 hour and 40 minutes.

AirAsia Plane

Mayroon din silang Premium Flex kung saan may option kang palitan ang date at time ng iyong flight up to two times.

Upon Arrival at the Airport

Make sure to double check the entry requirements to Zamboanga at ang protocols depende sa origin mo bago ang iyong trip.

Zamboanga Airport to City Center

  • Tricycle: P20 for the first km, P5 per additional km

Where to Stay in Zamboanga

By public transportation.

Zamboanga Tricycle

To give you an idea, usually, nasa P40-50 per person ang bayad para sa tricycle ride.

BAGUIO CITY TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

BAGUIO CITY TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

There were shooting stars.

I was a High School sophomore when I set foot in Baguio for the very first time. The details of the event are fuzzy now, but it was a Boy Scout-related trip. I was just a few steps to becoming an Eagle Scout then, which was something my friends and I had been working hard to achieve. To ensure I would be joining the trip, I had to work a little bit harder. My classmates didn’t know it then — they thought every penny I had for that trip was given — but I had to earn it by selling fishballs.

After over 10 hours of bus ride from Batangas, we finally reached Baguio at around midnight. In the middle of unloading our bags, my friends and I sat and rested on the base of flagpole. As we were having a conversation about the cold, shooting stars streaked across the night sky.

That was my earliest memory of Baguio City. Even now that the city has undergone a lot of changes and more cool, rustic towns have become accessible, I still find myself in a bus bound for Baguio again and again. It’s hard to forget something that left such a magical first impression. I mean, there were shooting stars.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING BAGUIO

Baguio was built as a hill station in 1900, at the start of the American Colonial Period. That’s why the names of many of the key landmarks sound western or American. Burnham Park was named after Architect Daniel Burnham, who planned the city; Wright Park after Governor-General Luke Edward Wright; Camp John Hay after John Milton Hay, who was President Roosevelt’s Secretary of State; and Bell House after General J. Franklin Bell. The Mansion, one of the city’s most recognizable buildings, was constructed to serve as the official residence of the Governor General.

travel brochure in tagalog

Today, Baguio is the biggest city and the economic center of the Cordillera region. Despite being a resort city, it is highly urbanized, home to almost 350,000 residents, many of which are from surrounding towns and provinces who moved to the city for work or studies. It is this cooler attitude that makes Baguio a magnet for tourists trying to escape the searing heat of the lowlands, especially in the summer.

Long before Sagada and Kalinga entered the collective consciousness of tourists, Baguio City was the go-to destination in the Cordillera region. It is known by a number of nicknames including City of Pines and Summer Capital of the Philippines , bestowed upon it because it is perched in the middle of tropical pine forests around 1500 meters above sea level, ensuring cool, pleasant temperatures year-round.

Here are more things you need to know about Baguio City.

  • Language: The four most spoken Philippine languages in Baguio are Ibaloi, Kankana-ey, Ilocano, and Tagalog. But English is widely understood and spoken too.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of April 2019).
  • Modes of payment: Credit cards are accepted by many establishments but CASH is still king (and queen) in Baguio.

WHERE TO STAY IN BAGUIO

Baguio looks easy and simple on the map, but it is a lot more complicated in reality. But picture it this way: At the very center of the city is Burnham Park. Many of the key places of interest are located somewhere around it. Most key roads is somehow directly connected to it. Even jeepney terminals are easily accessible from the park.

Hence, if it’s your first time and you want to see the key attractions in the city, pick a place that is located near Burnham Park. It doesn’t have to be directly across the park. Even hotels that are just a short walk away will do. This area will be most convenient for you.

But if you’re after some peace of mind and you’re not here to go sightseeing, choose a hotel that is located away from Burnham Park and a little bit isolated from all the busyness. Baguio, after all, is still a bona fide urban hub, with lots of buildings and vehicles and people.

HOW TO GET TO BAGUIO FROM MANILA

Several bus companies ply the Manila-Baguio route. You can catch a bus at the following terminals:

  • Genesis Transport: Cubao
  • Dagupan Bus Lines: Cubao
  • PARTAS: Cubao and Pasay
  • Joy Bus (Genesis): Pasay and Avenida
  • Victory Liner: Cubao and Pasay

Baguio is only 4-6 hours away from Manila, depending on which part of Manila you’re coming from, which route the bus takes, and whether or not it makes a stop along the way. Regular buses usually take Dau Exit (NLEX) or Concepcion Exit (SCTEX) and make at least one stop.

travel brochure in tagalog

But higher end buses like Joy Bus and Victory Liner’s first-class service use NLEX, SCTEX, and TPLEX non-stop, cutting down the travel time to 4-5 hours. First class buses also have wider legrooms and free snacks.

When I go to Baguio, I usually book with Victory Liner. No particular reason, really. It’s just out of habit. Haha. So I’m most familiar with their fares.

CUBAO TO BAGUIO – VICTORY LINER Regular aircon: P485 First class: P800

CUBAO TO BAGUIO – JOYBUS Deluxe: P720 Premier: P740

PASAY TO BAGUIO – JOYBUS Deluxe: P730 Premier: P760

PASAY TO BAGUIO – VICTORY LINER Regular aircon: P496 First class: P800

For the schedule, check this website: VICTORY LINER & JOY BUS SCHEDULE .

From the new Victory Liner terminal, you can take a cab to your hotel. If your hotel is near Burnham Park, the fare should be around P70.

HOW TO GET AROUND BAGUIO

One thing that you as a tourist needs to know about Baguio is that attractions are scattered around the city in clusters. The problem is that these clusters are far from each other. Hence, it’s best to explore by cluster. There are two main modes of transportation:

  • Jeepney. The cheaper way to get around. If your hotel is near Burnham, you can easily find a jeepney. There are terminals just outside the park. Minimum fare is P8.50.
  • Taxi. The more convenient way. If you’re a group, it’s affordable too. Cabs in Baguio are much cheaper than in Manila, and taxi drivers are known to be honest and give exact change (unlike in Manila). Of course, there are also bad drivers, but they are more the exception than the rule. Flagdown rate is P35.

GrabTaxi works in Baguio, but the number of available cabs is very limited, so expect to wait a long time to book.

You can also travel on foot. Within the city proper, I usually just walk. But I have to warn you that it can be exhausting. Visitors usually forget that Baguio’s terrain is largely uneven, something that isn’t obvious if you rely on flat maps. But once you’re there, you’ll realize that walking around Baguio involves uphill climbs. If you’re not familiar with some short cuts, you’ll also find yourself walking long distances.

THINGS TO DO IN BAGUIO & LA TRINIDAD

Camp john hay.

travel brochure in tagalog

This is my favorite place in the city. When I was young and I conjured up images of Baguio in my head, they looked like Camp John Hay and its thick blanket of pine trees. It was established on October 25, 1903 as an R&R (rest and recreation) station exclusively for the US Armed Forces in the Philippines. At the height of World War II, it was bombed by the Japanese but fell back in the hands of the Americans in 1945. Almost 50 years later, it was turned over to the Philippine government, which transformed the site into a tourist site.

There’s a lot to enjoy here including the following:

  • Treetop Adventures, where you can enjoy thrilling rides like the Superman Ride (zipline), Canopy Ride, and Tree Drop (harnessed free fall).
  • Bell House, formerly the official vacation residence of the Commanding General of the Philippines. It now houses a museum featuring American colonial architecture.
  • Butterfly Garden, good to see if you’ve never been to any butterfly garden before or if you’re with kids. Otherwise, skippable.
  • Cemetery of Negativism, a symbolic site for the burying of negativities — thoughts, emotions, attitude.
  • Yellow Trail, aka Forest Bathing Trail, a 1.5km easy hiking path that will lead you through and around the pine forest. The trek takes around 2 hours. You can do it in 2 ways. The usual route is generally uphill, starting at Le Monet Hotel and ending at Scout Hill. If you don’t think you have the stamina, you can do it the other way around instead. (That’s what we did, LOL!) We thoroughly enjoyed it!

For more information about the places to visit here, read: THINGS TO DO AT CAMP JOHN HAY .

La Trinidad Strawberry Farm

Baguio is almost synonymous with strawberries, but the most visited strawberry farm is actually in La Trinidad, 30 minutes away. Here, you’ll find plots of strawberries alongside vegetables and flowers. You can buy strawberries here for P250-P300 per kilo. If you want to pick the berries yourselves, prepare to shell out additional P200.

travel brochure in tagalog

Lying along the farm is a pasalubong center made up of several souvenir stores. If you get hungry, try the strawberry ice cream (which is really good) and strawberry taho!

Colors of Stobosa (Mural Houses)

travel brochure in tagalog

Not too far away from the strawberry field are the colorful houses of Stobosa. This community project is one of the newest attractions in La Trinidad. More formally referred to as Stobosa Hillside Homes Artwork, it is basically a cluster of hillside houses painted in various colors by the designers of Tam-awan Village. “Stobosa” stands for Stonehill, Botiwtiw, and Sadjap, the three sitios that make up the giant artwork.

Bell Church

travel brochure in tagalog

Just within walking distance of Stobosa Artwork is Bell Church, one of the most popular tourist sites in the Baguio-La Trinidad area. The Bell Church is a Chinese temple run and managed by a Filipino-Chinese religious organization, established by immigrants from Canton (Guangzhou) in 1960.

BenCab Museum

travel brochure in tagalog

BenCab Museum is actually located in the town of Tuba, but it’s just a short drive from the Baguio city center. The museum houses the works of Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, a National Artist for Visual Arts, and other Filipino contemporary art masters. Set amid relaxing greenery, the BenCan Museum is not just a place to appreciate art but also reflect.

Hours open: Tuesdays-Sundays 9am-6pm Last entry: 5:30pm Closed: Mondays, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Entrance Fee: P120

How to get there: From the public market, ride a jeepney bound for Asin. Fare is less than P20.

Tam-awan Village

Nicknamed “Garden in the Sky,” Tam-awan Village is a reconstruction of a traditional Cordilleran village set in a forest. Established by the Chanum Foundation in 1988, it aims to showcase the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the Cordillera and bring the region’s culture closer to more people while also promoting local artists. Currently, the village has Ifugao and Kalinga model houses, built using only traditional materials.

Entrance fee: P60

Burnham Park

travel brochure in tagalog

Most probably, Burnham Park is Baguio’s most well-known attraction. When you see it on the map, it doesn’t look much, but in reality, it is huge. Within its expanse are several smaller places of interest. The Melvin Jones Grandstand is the most visible, but if you walk around, you’ll also see the Children’s Playground and the Orchidarium, among others.

There’s also a lot of activities to enjoy here, mostly catering to families. You can rent a swan boat so you can paddle along Burnham Lagoon or you can rent a bike or go kart and ride around the park. Here are the rates.

Rental fees: Chopper (big bike): P75 per 30 minutes Go kart: P50 per 30 minutes Boat: P100 per 30 minutes (good for 5 pax) + P50 if with rower

Mines View Park

Another popular tourist spot is Mines View Park, so called because it overlooks the gold and copper mines of Itogon town below. The viewpoint is also a fantastic spot to watch the sunrise.

Unlike Burnham Park, the place can get crowded because the area isn’t that spacious. You’ll also find lots of souvenir stores around.

Botanical Garden

travel brochure in tagalog

Situated between Wright Park and Teachers’ Camp along Leonard Wood Road, the Baguio Botanical Garden is another popular destination in the city. It’s a great place to relax and surround yourself with trees greenery without going too far from the city center. This is also pretty vast, so expect a bit of walking.

Entrance fee: FREE

Wright Park

travel brochure in tagalog

Named after Governor-General Luke Edward Wright, Wright Park is a forested piece of land located just outside the Mansion. For tourists, it is the best site for horseback riding because of its proximity to the city center and the number of available horses to choose from.

Horseback riding rate: P200 for 7 rounds.

The Mansion

A short walk from Wright Park is the Mansion. Built in 1908, the Mansion served as the official residence of the US Governor-General in the Philippines. Today, it is the official summer palace of the President in the Philippines. Right across the Mansion is a long pond, the far end of which is a favorite photo spot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is the best time to visit baguio.

November to April , if you’re sightseeing.

Baguio enjoys cool temperature year-round, but of course, some months are better than others. November to April is the driest period, which is great if you’re planning on spending most of your time exploring. This means there is very little chance of heavy rain to put a damp on your itinerary.

travel brochure in tagalog

December to February is the coldest period and it will steadily rise until May, but it’s still pretty chilly especially at night.

If you love festivals, visit in February when the Panagbenga (Baguio Flower Festival) is in full swing and see the grand parade of flowers. But expect thick crowds everywhere.

June to September is the wettest period, not ideal for touring. But if you’re visiting Baguio to reflect, be alone, or try to finish writing something (true story, lol), then you might find the damp, foggy mornings to be inspiring.

What is the tipping custom in Baguio?

Just like in other places in the Philippines, tipping is not mandatory in Baguio. Tip only if you really enjoyed the service to show your appreciation.

Taxi drivers in Baguio are also known for giving exact change, which doesn’t usually happen in Manila. But if you want to tip, you can just round up the meter. For example, if the cost of the ride is P62 and you pay P70, you can tell the driver to keep the change.

What type of power plug / socket is used in Baguio?

Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Plug and socket Type A.

TUGUEGARAO TRAVEL GUIDE | Itinerary + Budget + Map [UPDATED 2022]

Tuguegarao Travel Guide Itinerary Trip

Tuguegarao is a city located on the northeastern side of mainland Luzon. It is about 485 kilometers away from Metro Manila and is part of Cagayan Province in the Cagayan Valley Region . The province is bordered by Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Kalinga, and Isabela. Tuguegarao’s main claim to fame is the record temperature it set for the Philippines at 42.2°Celsius in 1912 and 1969. But temperature aside, Tuguegarao has a few tourist spots up its sleeve that might surprise travelers who usually just pass through it on their way to the nearby town of Penablanca for spelunking, or Palaui Island and Claveria. It has a couple of historical churches, one of the longest bridges in the country, and a delectable noodle dish— pancit batil patong —that can rival the best of what the Philippines has to offer. Before taking that bus ride up north once again, think about dropping by Tuguegarao City and let this travel guide and trip itinerary open your maps towards the hottest city this side of the Philippines.

HOW TO GET TO TUGUEGARAO

The hurdle of conquering the numbing twelve-hour bus ride from Manila to Tuguegarao has been given solution by two major airlines in the country, Cebu Pacific Air and Philippine Airlines. While the prices of bus and plane tickets are quite wide, try to book during seat sales and you just might chance on a flight fare that’s much cheaper than those of buses. If you’re set on doing the bus route, I suggest you book a night trip, that way, you can sleep off the hours and arrive at Tuguegarao by sunrise. Or better yet, get a sleeper bus, which is only more expensive by a few hundred pesos.

GETTING AROUND TUGUEGARAO

Getting Around Tuguegarao

The main mode of transportation in Tuguegarao is the tricycle which locals refer to as tricy . The minimum fare is at ₱15.00 per head , with higher fares for farther destinations. Note that with this price, the driver has a right to scoot in a few more passengers with you as he goes along. Another popular mode of going about the city is the kalesa , a horse-drawn transport with a boxy carriage at the back. Fare is similar with the tricy at ₱15.00 minimum , but most of these are limited within the downtown area.

TUGUEGARAO TOURS & GUIDES

Tuguegarao Tours And Guides

During my visits to Tuguegarao City, I’ve never encountered a group selling packaged tours. The place itself is quite easy to explore; tourist sites within the city are mostly walking distances from each other, while the farther places are readily accessible by tricycles. Going to the town of Penablanca is another matter though, you either rent a van / tricycle or commute, both of which takes about an hour or two.

SPEAK TUGUEGARAO

The locals of Tuguegarao call themselves Tuguegarenos . They speak Ibanag , Itawes , Ilokano, as well as Tagalog and English. The most common tongue within Tuguegarao though is Itawes , a language close to the Ibanag and is used by the earliest people of Cagayan Valley.

Tuguegarao Language

WHERE TO STAY IN TUGUEGARAO

Surprisingly, Tuguegarao City is replete with accommodations that range from inns to high end hotels. Prices are quite affordable too—even with the posh ones—so choosing a place to stay for the night isn’t really a problem. A little tip for those wanting to stay overnight, a few hotels are on the outskirts of the city, so makes sure that the ones you would book are located along the downtown area (Centro).

Balai Bed And Breakfast Tuguegarao

WHERE TO EAT IN TUGUEGARAO

Tuguegarao City is a culinary delight when it comes to noodles or pancit . It is the birthplace of pancit batil patong , a stir-fried noodle dish topped with carabeef, crushed pork, liver, veggies, and poached egg—with a side dish of garnished garlic and egg-drop soup. There are numerous panciteria that line the streets of Tuguegarao’s downtown area, it’s actually quite hard to find other carinderia offerings. For those not into noodles, there are some restaurants in the city that offers regular Filipino and Western cuisines.

Anne's Resto Music Bar Tuguegarao

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN TUGUEGARAO

Honestly, there’s really not much to see in Tuguegarao City—tourist spots in the area are quite sparse. But what it lacks in places to visit, it makes for by its cuisine—spell pancit batil patong . The city is also a good place to stay in if one is planning to visit the Callao Caves in the town of Penablanca along with the other cave systems in the area. If you’re planning to go to Palaui Island, Tuguegarao is a good city for a side trip to cut the long bus ride from Manila.

WHAT TO BUY IN TUGUEGARAO

Tuguegarao is known for its carabeef meat. They use it on their noodles dishes, their processed meat products, and they even make chicharon out of it. The town of Penablanca, on the other hand, probably has the best honey this side of the Philippines.

TUGUEGARAO SAMPLE ITINERARY & BUDGET GUIDE

It is possible to cover all the tourist spots—including the famous Callao Caves—in Tuguegarao City in a single day or a day trip. But if you’re planning to do a leisurely visit of the celebrated Callao Caves in Penablanca, you would at least need two full days of touring. You can even add a few more caves within the vicinity to your list. I prepared a one-day and two-day itineraries for such trips below. The itinerary is intentionally made for a group of four to maximize the tricycle fare going to and from Callao Cave since it is a bit expensive. Simply adjust the said fare depending the number of your group. Tricycle fare around the city is per person. The fare going to and from Tuguegarao City is not included in the expenses as this would totally depend on where you’d be coming from.

No inns to stay beside pinacanauan river that I know. But there's the diamond resort nearby the place, good only if you got your rides as it is not always accessible... If you want to know more about the culture, history, and Tagalog language, we have more information for you!

History of the Philippines and the Tagalog Language

Despite the country’s turbulent history, Filipinos still managed to become one of the friendliest and warmest people in Asia. Aside from being a travel destination because of its food and beautiful beaches, the Philippine archipelago also attracts tourists through its colorful history.

Before its discovery by the Spanish empire, the country was populated by rival tribes, which all had distinct traditions, gods, and datu (chieftains or rulers). Unfortunately, earlier records regarding their culture were destroyed as the Spaniards colonized the country. With the land ruled by Spanish governors for more than 300 years, Filipinos were able to adopt its language, religion, customs, and even naming traditions.

Additionally, countries like the United States and Japan have also targeted the country due to its tactical position. It has become one of the major maritime trade routes, which is why the locals are well-versed in different languages and are familiar with other countries’ traditions.

As the way of living changed over time, the Philippines’ language has also been under consistent development. While Tagalog is considered the official language, you may be surprised to know that there are also about 170 regional dialects. Some of the examples are Cebuano, Chavacano, Waray, and Hiligaynon.

Tagalog Phrases For Travel History of the Philippines and the Tagalog Language

Culture of the Philippines

The country’s unique yet diverse culture is deeply rooted in the customs and traditions of its foreign colonizers and its neighboring countries. Due to its strategic location and a humble number of islands, history proves that the Philippines has always been part of the trade route of other nationalities such as Malays, Arabs, Chinese, and even Westerners. And since it is often visited, the locals have grown to love, learn, and ultimately adopt the cultures, dialects, cuisine, and even languages of these foreign visitors.

For instance, scattered all over the country are different religious monuments, mosques, and shrines in the hopes of catering to the varied religious communities existing in the country. While it is true that most of the Filipinos are baptized as Catholics, there are still a considerable number of people who come from different religions. The country and the government fully recognize this by proclaiming specific holidays for each!

Despite having an intense blend of traditions, Filipinos developed distinct qualities that set them apart. For instance, even today, the locals (along with their extended families) still put a premium on joining community festivals as this is an opportunity for them to show appreciation towards music, fashion and art, food, and religion.

What Is The Tagalog Language?

You might be wondering why the Philippines does not seem to have its own writing system, unlike other Asian countries. Well, to be honest, the country has its old writing system called “Baybayin.” While the origins of Baybayin are still unclear even today, it can be noted that the script is influenced by Proto-Sinaitic script. This 14th-century writing was rampantly used in Luzon back in the 16th -17th century, but it has somehow lost its popularity as the locals learned about the English.

Note : In 2018, the Baybayin is slowly being revived by the country, so some of the busiest places in Manila are adapting Baybayin translations in government signages. As a tourist, you do not have to worry since about 90% of signage are still in English.

Tagalog Language Structure

Ready to speak Tagalog? To navigate the Philippines like a pro, allow us to share with you the basics, such as the Tagalog alphabet and sentence structure.

Tagalog Alphabet

What makes Tagalog an easy language to learn is that its alphabet is reasonably easy to memorize. Each letter is called titik or letra , and each of them represents a spoken sound that is directly similar to the English alphabet. The modern Filipino alphabet holds over 28 letters: a 26-letter set from the Latin alphabet, one special Spanish “Ñ” ( /ɲ/ or sounded as “enye”), and the Tagalog digraph “Ng” ( /ŋ/ as the “ng” in words like “sing,” “length,” and “thing”).

Tagalog Sentences

Compared to English, the Tagalog sentence stricture can be deemed as somewhat flexible. To form basic sentences in the Tagalog language, you may use the structure “Adjective +Subject/Pronoun.” For instance, you may simply say Maganda si Beng , which is literally translated as “Beautiful is Beng.” Another example is Naiinitan ako , which literally translates to “Feeling hot me.”

Of course, you may also use the classic SVO agreement to make sentences like Ako ay pagod , which means “I am tired” in English.

Planning to visit Siargao? Here’s a detailed Siargao Travel Guide with budget tips, places to visit, accommodation recommendations, and more. Here you will find my 5D4N Siargao itinerary, which I think is perfect for first-time visitors. I also included another itinerary featuring Hinatuan, the home of the Enchanted River, and Bislig, home to Tinuy-an Falls, in case you’d like a side trip to Mindanao. So, here we go!

Table of Contents

Surfing in Cloud 9

Siargao three islands, magpupungko rock pools, sugba lagoon and kawhagan island, swim with the stingless jellyfish of bucas grande island, other things to see and do in siargao, manila/clark/cebu to siargao by air, manila to butuan to siargao, cebu to siargao via surigao city (ferry), how to get around siargao, where to book your tours in siargao, budget accommodation, mid-range accommodation, luxury accommodation, where to eat in siargao, 5d/4n itinerary for first time visitors, 5d/4n itinerary including enchanted river and tinuy-an falls, is it safe to go to siargao now, what is the best month to go to siargao, how many days should i stay in siargao, how to stay connected in siargao, renting a scooter/motorbike in siargao, how to save money on alcohol in siargao, do you need cash in siargao, how much does it cost to travel to siargao, siargao tourist spots.

Surfing in Cloud 9 has to be the first thing on this list because it’s one of the most memorable things I did in Siargao. Aside from the fact that the island is known as the Surfing Capital of Philippines , its famous surf spot called Cloud 9 is the location of some international surfing competitions. How cool is that?! Although this spot is used mainly by advanced surfers, there is a spot for beginners too.

surfing lessons in Siargao

You can avail a surfing lesson from one of the locals in Cloud 9 or book your surfing lesson online .

For me, island hopping in Siargao is the next best thing. Having been to all the major islands in Siargao, I admit that I have my own personal favorites. However, the islands are diverse, has its own unique offerings, and one is certainly not “better” than another. In Siargao, the three famous islands included in all island-hopping tours are Naked Island , Daku Island and Guyam Island .

Naked Island

Naked Island, a white sandbar with no shade, is my least favorite spot. It’s not due to a lack of beauty but because its exposure almost guarantees sunburn. Additionally, the strong current makes it less ideal for swimming. However, it remains a fantastic place for picture taking and sunbathing.

aerial shot of Naked Island in Siargao

Daku Island

Daku Island is my absolute favourite in Siargao . This island dazzles with glittering turquoise waters, wide white sand beach and swaying coconut fringes. It can handle a lot of people in comparison with Naked Island and Guyam Island, so it never feels too crowded. Aside from swimming and beach bumming, Daku is a great place for surfing too!

dog at Daku Island

Guyam Island

Guyam Island is my second favourite island in Siargao, next to Daku Island. It is great for swimming, sunbathing, enjoying non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks at the beach bar, and the best beach to watch the sunset.

Corregidor Island

Siargao’s got a Corregidor Island too! This island, located an hour and a half boat ride from General Luna, offers breathtaking views of nearby islands. It also features powdery white sand and palm-fringed beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters. However, one drawback is the limited beach access as various resorts own different sections, requiring separate entrance fees. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my visit and would definitely return for a second time!

In Magpupungko , you’ll not only see spectacular rock formations but also inviting tidal pools everywhere! I first saw pictures of Magpupungko in Instagram and I told myself that I would see it one day. When I finally did, it took my breath away! Seriously, I was blown away by its clear waters with different shades of blue. Before I knew it, I was already cliff diving and swimming to my heart’s content. Magpupungko will always be a non-negotiable in Siargao. Going here is an absolute must!

Magpupungko Tidal Pools in Siargao

Another must visit in Siargao is Sugba Lagoon. Located in the second biggest mangrove system in the Philippines, this mystical lagoon offers various types of activities for all kinds of travellers. The star attraction is the bluest lagoon I have ever seen with a wooden diving board in the middle. This is where you can jump all you want or just stand at the board for some picture taking.

If you get in to Sugba Lagoon early enough, the board and the lagoon will be all yours. But expect a queue for the diving board because this place is one of Siargao’s most popular destination.

Let’s not forget about Kawhagan Island . Some tour operators offer this as a side trip to Sugba Lagoon. This small island paradise located in Del Carmen is famous for its crystal clear turquoise waters, lush palm trees, and beautiful white sandbar on one end. You will surely fall in love when you see it. Trust me.

Hidden within Sohoton National Park in Bucas Grande Island lies a small lagoon, home to rare species of stingless jellyfish. Touching them and seeing them up close were magical. It was definitely one of the most memorable experiences I had in Siargao (well not really in Siargao but Surigao del Norte). Aside from the Jellyfish Sanctuary, there are other great attractions in this island like the Hagukan Cave , Magkukuob Cave (with a 5-moter cliff jump board), Titikan Lake , and the instagrammable Club Tara Resort .

stingless jellyfish

  • See the sunrise or sunset at the Coconut “Top of the Road”, Burgos Coconut Road and Maasin River (Bent Coconut tree) – you guys probably know what these places look like because they’re all over Instagram!
  • Follow the dirt road to the Secret Beach – also known as Guiwan Beach, this beach doesn’t receive too much attention compared to other beaches Siargao.
  • Party in General Luna – Siargao nightlife is vibrant, as there’s always a designated resort hosting the “official” party. For example, Retro Night at Mama Coco is scheduled on Mondays while “Sabado Nights” is scheduled at Harana Surf Resort on Saturdays. Just ask your receptionist to know where the party at.
  • Relax and destress by joining a yoga class – There are many resorts all around Siargao offering both single session and multi-day yoga sessions. If you need ta space to soothe your mind and release the tension in your body, then Siargao is a great place to do it! Kermit Siargao offers 1 session (75 minutes) for only 400 pesos while 5 sessions cost 1,500 pesos.
  • Descend thru Tayangban Cave Pools – Located near the Siargao Circumferential Road, this cave/cenote is one of Siargao’s best attractions. It can get a little scary to get there because of bats and total darkness, but it will be worth it. The best time to visit is the middle of the day when sunlight beams straight down and gives an almost heavenly reflection to the turquoise waters below.

How to get to Siargao

The fastest way to get to Siargao is by air, with frequent daily departures from Manila, Clark, or Cebu year-round. Seat sales can start as low as 1,500 pesos for a roundtrip ticket, while regular airfare ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 pesos, depending on your departure point. Always opt for the earliest flight to maximize your time on the island. Even though resort check-ins typically start at 2 PM, you can leave your luggage at the reception and start exploring the island right away.

As of June 2024, Cebu Pacific offers the earliest flight to Siargao. Flight DG 6841 departs at 4:55 AM from Manila’s NAIA terminal 3 and arrives at Sayak Airport at 7:25 AM.

Another alternative route to Siargao is via Butuan. My friends and I followed this route on one of our trips, which allowed us to explore Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls before heading to Siargao. From Butuan, you can take a bus or van to Hinatuan and Bislig. From either Hinatuan or Bislig, take a bus to Surigao City, where you can catch a ferry to Siargao.

There is no direct ferry from Cebu to Siargao. Instead, you will need to take a ferry from Cebu to Surigao City and then transfer to a ferry bound for Siargao. Here are the options:

Cebu to Surigao (overnight ferry)

  • Departure: 9:00 PM
  • Arrival: 7:00 AM
  • Departure: 7:00 PM
  • Arrival: 3:00 AM

Surigao to Siargao

  • Arrival in Surigao: Around 3:00-3:30 AM
  • First ferry to Siargao: 6:00 AM (Evaristo and Sons Sea)
  • Arrival in Surigao: Around 7:00 AM
  • Ferry to Siargao: 10:00 AM (Evaristo and Sons Sea)

Getting around Siargao is easy and relatively cheap. You can ride a habal-habal (shared motorcycle) or tricycle around General Luna for around 10-20 pesos (less than $1 USD). Scooters are quintessential to the Siargao experience, and it’s not uncommon to see travelers riding one around the island. Scooter rentals are available online and in General Luna for as little as 350 pesos per 24 hours, excluding gasoline ($7 USD).

travel brochure in tagalog

There are many tour operators offering island-hopping and land tours in the island. Siargao Tri-Island Tour takes you to three tropical islands –  Naked Island ,  Daku Island  and  Guyam Island . You can also find one that offers island-island hopping tour that includes Corregidor Island along with the three islands! My friends and I did this tour and fell in love with it!

Another tour you can book is the Siargao Land Tour , which is great way to explore the beauty and culture of Siargao beyond the beach. This tour takes you to Coconut Road, Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko Rock Pools, and Maasin River.

Where to stay in Siargao

  • Tres Islas Hostel – for less than 500 pesos per night, you can get a dorm-style accommodation in this hostel. This is the cheapest hostel in the island but with great reviews.
  • Mad Monkey Hostel Siargao – a popular choice for backpackers and budget travelers looking for a fun and social atmosphere. They offer both dormitory-style and private rooms, as well as a variety of activities such as surfing lessons, island hopping tours, and live music events.

  • Mama’s Grill – serves up some of the best grilled seafood and meat on the island. This is actually my favorite among all the restaurants I’ve tried in Siargao.
  • Zicatela Siargao – This Mexican restaurant, cafe and cocktail lounge is a great spot to grab a drink and enjoy the sunset. Aside from their signature cocktails, their all-day breakfast offerings like Beef Birria and Burritos are the bomb.
  • Shaka Cafe Siargao – For healthy and delicious meals, Shaka Siargao is a must-visit. Their smoothie bowls ( Bakunawa is my all-time-favorite), salads, and wraps were all fresh and flavorful.
  • Boulevard Eateries – There are many eateries at the boulevard offering cheap grilled seafood and booze (cheapest in all of General Luna). This is where my friends and I would usually go at night to have barbecue and beer.

Siargao Travel Guide: Things to Know Before You Go

Yes, it is safe to go to Siargao now. Siargao is an incredibly safe destination for travelers, including solo travelers and solo female travelers. The local community is friendly, and the island has a low crime rate, making it a welcoming and secure place to visit. As always, it’s important to take standard travel precautions and stay informed about any local advisories.

The best month to visit Siargao is between March and October. This period offers the best weather for beach activities and island hopping. For surfers, the peak surf season is from September to November when the waves are at their best.

5 to 7 days is the minimum to fully experience Siargao. This allows enough time to explore its beautiful beaches, enjoy surfing, visit popular spots like Cloud 9, Magpupungko Rock Pools, and Sugba Lagoon, and take day trips to nearby islands. It also gives you time to relax and soak in the laid-back island atmosphere. Seriously, Siargao will captivate you, and you’ll want to stay even longer.

Most resorts, airbnbs, hostels, and guesthouses offer Wi-Fi for guests. Additionally, many cafes and restaurants provide free Wi-Fi. If you are working remotely, you can try some of the island’s coworking spaces like Alter Space Siargao and Lexias Hostel Workspace . I personally recommend Holafly eSIM , which uses Smart, the best cellular network provider in the Philippines.

Get your eSIM here and get 5% off when you use my code  PROJECTGORA .

When renting a scooter or motorbike, ensure you have a valid driver’s license and always observe proper driving precautions, such as wearing a helmet. One of the most critical pieces of advice I can offer is to purchase travel insurance; you never know when you might need it. Siargao is the last place you’d want to get involved in an accident, considering that the hospital is located in Dapa, which is quite far from General Luna. Additionally, the roads in Siargao can be quite dark, so it’s best to avoid driving at night for safety reasons.

Buy drinks from local stores (called sari-sari stores) and enjoy local carinderias at the boulevard, where pulutan and booze are cheap. Take advantage of happy hour deals at bars and restaurants, where you can often find discounted prices on drinks.

Yes, you need cash in Siargao. While some establishments accept credit cards and digital payments ( GCash ), cash is widely accepted and often preferred, especially by smaller businesses, local stores, and eateries.

The cost of a trip to Siargao can vary based on factors like your travel style, length of stay, and activities. Here’s a rough estimate of typical expenses for a 5-day trip:

  • Budget traveler:  PHP 10,000 – PHP 15,000 (approximately $180 – $270)
  • Mid-range traveler:  PHP 20,000 – PHP 35,000 (approximately $360 – $630)
  • Luxury traveler:  PHP 40,000 and above (approximately $720+)

So, that’s about it my dear readers! I hope this Siargao Travel Guide will prove useful! Feel free to leave a comment below if you have questions, suggestions or stories you want to share about Siargao!

It is also essential when packing your things, as it would serve as a guideline on what you have to bring and wear during your trip to Davao.

As with the whole Philippines, Davao City only has two seasons, the dry summer season and the wet season.  If you have a lot of outdoor destinations included in your Davao itinerary , it's best to book flights to the Philippines during the dry months of January to April.

These months have the least chances of rainfall, so you can fully enjoy the outdoor activities and water adventures.

Davao celebrates its annual Kadayawan Festival every third week of August.  Recognized as the “Mother of all Mindanao festivals” Kadayawan is an extravagant affair that features flower floats parades, street dancing, and trade fairs.

The festival is held in commemoration of Davao’s indigenous people and their contribution to the city’s rich cultural heritage. Kadayawan Festival is also a thanksgiving celebration for a bountiful harvest. Visiting Davao City during the Kadayawan Festival is a great way to experience the city and be immersed in its vibrant culture.

The ideal time to visit Davao City for hot-weather activities would be from early January to May. These months are perfect because they receive less rainfall than the other months. Here’s a summary of the average monthly rainfall in Davao City:

Davao Travel Guide: What to Do + Hotels + Itinerary

Davao weather can be humid during the summer season, it's best to wear light, breathable clothes as the weather can get hot and humid. If you’re coming to Davao from June to November,  bring an umbrella or jacket since these months are the rainy season.

Luckily for travelers looking for their next tropical getaway, Davao is easy to reach. Thanks to its international airport, Davao is highly accessible from other airports in the Philippines , as well as from select international airports abroad. Travelers can also catch daily flights to Manila from here.

Davao has its own airport, the Francisco Bangoy International Airport commonly referred to as the Davao International Airport . It is the main gateway to Mindanao, so it is naturally the busiest airport in Mindanao and the third busiest in the Philippines.

Aside from being connected to major jump-offs all over the Philippines, Davao Airport is also connected to a number of international airports.

If you’re coming from outside of the Philippines, you can travel to Davao directly, or you can fly to either Manila-Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Luzon or Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Visaya.

From International Destinations

Davao International Airport is connected to international destinations like Hongkong, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Wherever you are in the world, you can fly to those countries and hop on a plane headed directly for Davao City.

From Luzon and Visayas

You also have the option to fly to the major jump-off points across the country. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Airport in  Manila , Luzon is connected to several countries in Asia, Middle East, Oceania, North America, and Europe. From NAIA, you can fly directly to Davao International Airport.

Flying in from Clark to Davao, it is also a good choice if you’re coming from the Northern part of Luzon or if you want to avoid the traffic in Manila. Airfares from Clark are usually lower than Manila. Luckily, Clark International Airport is connected to Korea, Taiwan, Hongkong, and Singapore.

You can also fly in from the Visayas region by taking  Bohol to Davao flight  or Bacolod to Davao flight , among others. A flight from Cebu is also a popular choice as the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is now connected to 21 international destinations including, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

If you will be coming from Mindanao, you can take a Zamboanga to Davao flight as well.

Traveling to Davao via ferry is also possible, albeit less convenient. There are no ports that accommodate long-distance passenger ferries within the city. If you’re coming from Manila or Cebu, you will be docking at Nasipit Port in Agusan del Norte which is approximately 6 hours away from Davao City.

2Go Travel offers ferry routes from Manila to Nasipit Port twice a week. The travel time typically takes 33 hours and 30 minutes. Likewise, only 2Go Travel has routes from Cebu to Nasipit Port.

There are trips thrice a week with travel time lasting 8 hours. The sailing durations and trip frequency may vary from season to season, so be sure to check the schedule before you plan your trip.

You will need to learn how to get around Davao to reach tourist attractions. Strap on because Davao has a variety of transportation options. The primary mode of transport is the jeepney, which has specific routes that can take you around the city. Jeepneys,  multicabs, buses, and tricycles serve as general transport.

  • Book Davao City airport transfers

Taxicabs can also be hired to take you to other parts of Davao. Alternatively, you can rent a car in Davao for maximum comfort and convenience. Just make sure you have all the requirements to rent a car in the Philippines . Taxi booking apps are also available in Davao.

Jeepneys or jeeps are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines along major highways. They ply specific routes that can take you around the city.

Riding these open-aired vehicles in congested streets offers an interesting experience for first-time visitors. You can use this Davao City Jeepney Guide App to help you find and ride the right jeepney route.

Motorized tricycles, or simply tricycles, are the Philippine version of the auto-rickshaw. They are also comparable to Thailand’s tuk-tuk. Tricycles ply the barangay roads throughout the Davao City; they typically go where the jeepneys can’t.

Tricycles can’t pass by major roads, but you can hail one anywhere as long as you’re not on the highway.

Van or Car Rental

If you’re traveling from the city to the rural towns, you might need to get on a bus, ride a jeepney afterward, and possibly hop on a tricycle. Multiple transfers are unavoidable if you’re traveling to the further towns of the province via public transportation. If this isn’t comfortable for you, you can opt for self-drive car rentals in the Philippines . Booking a Davao car rental  or a van rental in the Philippines  is your best option, or if you can indulge, book a  budget car rental in the Philippines ,  SUV rental in the Philippines , or  luxury car rental in the Philippines .

There are plenty of taxi cabs in Davao. They're one of the easiest modes of getting around, but they can also be quite costly since Davao is a huge city. You can hail one almost anywhere.

The best thing about Davao taxis is that unlike those in Metro Manila who usually pick passengers, Davao taxi drivers will take you to your destination without second thoughts.

Taxi Booking App

Typically, commuting in Davao entails riding more than one public transportation. If you can’t stand going through multiple transfers, then you can opt to take a taxi or book with the Grab Taxi app .

While Grab Taxi is usually more expensive than riding jeepneys or buses, these can ensure you can get around safely and in comfort. You don’t have to do multiple transfers, which is convenient for travelers coming from and going to the airport.

There are also buses in Davao. However, buses exclusively ply the north to south route. Riding a bus is a great way to go in and out of the city. You can also ride a bus to get to Samal Island. The Island City Express Bus can take you to Samal Island via the barge-ferry at Sasa Ferry Terminal.

Another mode of transportation you can take to reach Samal Island is a water taxi. Water taxis bring locals and international travelers to and from Samal Island and Davao. There are daily water taxi trips to the Island Garden City of Samal. You catch the water taxi at Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao. The water taxi can transport up to 4 passengers.

So be sure to withdraw more than enough cash and have your currencies changed while in Davao City proper.  ATMs are available in most establishments, such as malls and convenience stores. However, not all establishments may accept credit card payments.

If you're in Davao and you want to address a local, expect an answer in either Cebuano, Tagalog, or English. Most locals understand English well, so don't be afraid to ask questions or directions. Say hi/hello first when approaching them to establish a friendly tone. Who knows? You might earn a new friend in the process.

Travel Tips When Visiting Various Tourist Spots in Mindanao

Many are scared they heard Mindanao. Mindanao is relatively safe. I had visited numerous tourist spots in Mindanao, and I didn’t experience any problems for each of my travels. Of course, every traveler must exercise the necessary precautions when visiting a new place, including all places in the world.

In line with the above, we recommend the following if you plan to visit any tourist spots in Mindanao.

  • Research. Before your trip, it is imperative to research the place before hitting the road. You should know if there is a pending advisory at the place. Learn the bus schedules, especially the last trip, etc. Many daring tourists meet some accidents because they miss the last bus and are forced to sleep on the street or at the terminal.
  • Contact the Local Tourism Office. This office will give you sound advice on where to go or whether to go in certain seasons.
  • Avail the services of accredited tour operators. Let’s face it: you need a guide in some places, and you cannot do it alone.
  • Get some travel insurance. Just a few more bucks will surely save you from any unforeseen accidents.
  • Check and recheck the information you get online. Not all travel bloggers who wrote about the place have been there. This is one of the reasons why I put my pics on my blog pages as much as possible to show the readers researching that I had been in the place.
  • Ask. Try to be friendly and talk to the locals when you reach the place. They can provide you with priceless pieces of information and tips.
