HOT Rod Power Tour

2017 HOT ROD Power Tour Heats Up

The annual HOT ROD Power Tour . Need we say more?

It’s a highly anticipated seven-day, seven-city journey that brings together more than 6,000 vehicles and 100,000-plus spectators to travel in packs through a designated route. Admittedly, it’s dominated by classic muscle and traditional hot rods . But look hard enough and a few contemporary builds can be found.

A New Gen of Hot Rodders

Daringly, we at The Engine Block wonder if the sport compact segment is well on its way to becoming a bigger part of that hot rod community in yonder years. Consider some of the crazy builds plastered across the internet and be prepared to roll that tongue back in your mouth—a 5.0 V8 from a Blue Oval lives inside a Porsche Cayman; a flashy Ferrari 458 V8 is under the hood of a Toyota 86; a LS1 V8 powers a classic Porsche 911; and a darling Datsun 510 went under the knife with two previous engines before finding “the one” with a SR20DET. By the looks of these swaps, we believe sport compact builders have a seat at the hot rod table if they’re willing to join.

As hot rodders, extraordinary creative liberties are taken to marry a myriad of performance parts that eventually fire up in harmony; hence the obsession with cramming an oversized motor in a small engine bay. After all, the very definition of hot rodding is an automobile rebuilt or modified for high speed and fast acceleration. So you see, the process doesn’t discriminate against years, makes or models. And neither does the HOT ROD Power Tour.

“Enthusiasts from around the world celebrate as HOT ROD Power Tour welcomes all makes and models of hot rods, street rods, custom trucks, muscle cars and performance machines of every vintage and nameplate,” said HOT ROD Power Tour. “It is the ultimate amalgamation of vehicle brands, styles and eras; one week of non-stop gearhead glory on some of the coolest roads the country has to offer,” said HOT ROD Editor-in-Chief Evan Perkins.

Modern Rides Are Tomorrow’s Classics

If the engine swaps mentioned above prove anything, it’s that builders want a challenge and the end result to be completely custom. Let’s time warp 60-80 years ago. No one considered now-coveted classic vehicle platforms such as the Ford Model T, ‘65 Ford Mustang , ’69 Chevy Camaro or ‘70 Plymouth Cuda would carry such a hefty collector’s price tag.

During their prime, these rides were simply everyday commuters, some of which happened to produce a high horsepower driving experience that landed speed junkies in drag-racing glory . And similarly, sport compact enthusiasts have witnessed former reasonably priced Japanese imports skyrocket in price during recent years due to consumer demand. Overarching point: Modern rides are tomorrow’s classics. And it doesn’t matter what year, make or model is center stage, rather what’s under the hood .

HOT ROD Long Haul

Until that day comes, The Engine Block team caught up with a familiar face at the annual HOT ROD Power Tour, presented by Chevrolet Performance and driven by Continental Tire. And that nameplate reads none other than Edelbrock Performance . Cary Redman is a National Sales Manager at the company, 13 year HOT ROD Power Tour attendee and what the group has nicknamed a “long hauler”.

“Those who travel from start to finish are considered the long haulers, a title they proudly boast. The 2017 HOT ROD Power Tour anticipates more than 3,500 on tour this year,” said the group. However, Redman believes that number is an ultra conservative estimate and, in his experience, anticipates long haulers to range between 4,000-5,000 since not everyone is actually registered.

Memories That Last a Lifetime

HOT Rod Power Tour - Edelbrock - 1969 Boss Mustang

“Once you’ve lived power tour, it sticks in your memory for years and years and years to come. The life and character behind the tour is remarkable, and it’s one of those permanent memories that you absolutely never forget,” said Redman. And how could you when “it feels like it’s either hot as Hades or raining every year,” laughed Redman. Grounds for individual enthusiast activity , family vacation, honeymoon and even a marriage site, the HOT ROD Power Tour is full of candid experiences (sometimes the kind that come back to haunt, but are memorable nonetheless).

“Stories that come from Power Tour, well, they still tell them 10 years later. It’s an experience like no other, rooted in camaraderie and an emotional bond,” continued Redman. It’s true that enthusiasts from around the world gather together with their cherished ride of choice to make the 3,000+ mile round trip through mostly small-town America.

A Testament of Man and Machine

The goal, rather the expectation, is to drive the entire way without a trailer. “It’s a testament to the vehicle itself and the person who owns it. And it’s an investment in time, energy and money,” said Redman. “We have a no-man-left-behind philosophy so if someone breaks down then it’s guaranteed others will pull over to help,” he added. “Plus GM brings a service provider, a rig with tools and technicians. So if people break down along the way there’s a formal place to use tools and fix the ride at the next stop. And it’s all free of charge!” added Redman.

Breakdown or smooth sailing, it’s one helluva feeling to cruise into small towns where locals are parked in their front lawns ready to greet the Power Tour with friendly smiles, waves and cheers. “We cruise back roads that unless you were on this tour, you’d never go out of your way to go see,” said Redman. During Power Tour, “a town population of 500 could jump to over 10,000,” continued Redman. He discussed how the annual event definitely bolsters local economies. “Streets are overflowing with people and cars. Hotel rooms are booked solid.  Restaurants run out of food. Bars are packed. We really overrun them,” he continued.

From a vendor perspective, it’s an ideal opportunity to connect one-on-one with the end consumers. “The 23rd annual HOT ROD Power Tour will feature a colorful midway of mobile display rigs from more than 50 performance manufacturers and aftermarket specialists with opportunities to view the latest innovations and get expert advice,” said HOT ROD Power Tour.

Edelbrock Performance chooses to use the tour as a platform to educate, rather than straight-up sell. Because in the end, the tour is about growing a community of enthusiasts.

So what are you waiting for? Register that adored ride and get ready for the cruise of a lifetime. Every year proves to be filled with new candid moments. And every year brings forth a new ride to showcase. Check out the beauties Edelbrock and Redman have featured at HOT ROD Power Tour throughout the years.

They finally announced the dates and locations for this year's power tour. Are any of you going to hit any of it? I'm going to do from day 1 until at least day 4. We'll see how things go. I'd like to do the full thing but I'm taking the wife and kids. We'll see how they like it after day 3.... HOT ROD Power Tour 2017 Dates and Locations - Registration Open! - Hot Rod Network
Crikey but I'd love to do that. Unfortunately the timing is wrong; our next trip will be September.
I would love to meet up in Kansas City and go to Davenport and Newton, but I don't think it's going to work for me. I think paint will still be drying on the 53 and I am planning taking the T/A to the Black Hills with my youngest for a week, around that time also.
ending up in kentucky .. they must be headed thru bama again in 2018 ,,, 300 bucks for the complete tour .. it was 59 bucks when i went in 2005 ..

It sounds like you have way less work to get ready than I do........ Too bad you can't incorporate the 2 trips.

Yeah, I was surprised how much it was. I have never gone a compete tour. Just a 1 day or 2 spot 2 different years. This might be the last time I can take the entire family on this since it's so close. I'm hoping it'll give the kids good memories for a long time.
This will be my 3rd long haul can't wait. Got all my hotels booked. I was in the burn out contest in Memphis 2015 not something I would normally do but it was a world record. You can see it at (Gibson performance 2015 hot rod power tour) they did a video and interviewed me I am the guy with the Wilson ball and yellow 1971 RS Camaro check it out.

Judging from the last pic I seen of your 40, I might have less work left on mine than yours I don't think it would work too good to incorporate both trips into one. The Black Hills are 6 hours west of me and Kansas City is 5 ish hours south of me.

UPDATE: Anyone Else Joining The 2017 Hot Rod Power Tour Next Week? http://www.hotrod.com/articles/2017-hot-rod-power-tour-dates-locations/ I did the 2012 Power Tour and it was an absolute blast. It started off at the GM Proving Grounds in Milford ,MI. Seven days and seven cities later it ended in Arlington, TX. This year I'm going to jump on the Power Tour in Indianapolis, IN and follow it to Bowling Green, KY.

Hello DY............Participating in what such matters? There is no racing on the Power Tour. The Hot Rod Power Tour is designed around driving to 7 cities in 7 days. The real fun is driving 200 - 300 miles to the next city w/ thousands of other like minded gearheads. At each city the sponsors set up what is essentially a huge cruise-in involving 2K-3K muscle cars. At each city there may be a Dynojet set up if you are wondering what your RWHP is or possibly an autocross. GM and the V Series Race Team always has a big presence on the Tour.

I believe that Ranger (Deville owner, older model Cadillac forums moderator)) will do the Iowa - SE Illinois part in his ?? 69 ?? Road Runner. It's a hoot - thousands of stunning cars from every year imaginable. Plenty of driving, fun, food, and bikinis. Maybe, just maybe, next year - when it picks up again in Bowling Green.

Thanx for stepping in here Sub409..........The Power Tour is an absolute blast. My favorite part of the Power Tour is waking up the morning after and hitting the road and watching 3,000 hot rods and muscle cars hit the Interstate at the SAME TIME and drive to the next city. That alone is worth the price of admission. Oh yeah...........I forgot about the bikinis:yup:

I've been to Muskegon a few times - there are some pretty sweet dunes up there if you have a sand rail or ATV/bike. Yeah, Indy is a cool city for sure. Lucas Oil Raceway is a drag strip -they host the Drag Nationals there. Another cool thing: If you shuck out $3,200 you can actually go 200 mph around the brickyard with Mario Andretti. Or, for far less you can just drive an Indy Car around the track (either oval or road coarse) on your own. http://www.indyracingexperience.com/experiences/purchase Plus, there's John Force Racing and Gasoline Alley to see. You could spend a week there just looking at racing stuff. If you need any suggestions on...well...anything while you're there, I can offer suggestions.

Hot Rod Power Tour kicks off 30th year at Beech Bend Raceway Park

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The Hot Rod Power Tour kicked off its 30th anniversary at Beech Bend Raceway Park; promising a full day of automotive excitement and activities in Bowling Green. The tour will spend a day in a different city throughout the next week, ending at the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park on Friday, June 14.

“It started with Hot Rod Magazine editors 30 years ago and they did an event in Ohio called The Power Festival, it was a drag race. The editors said ‘Hey we’ve got all these cool cars, let’s drive them cross country and you know what if anybody wants to come with us, come on we’re going to call it the Hot Rod Power Tour,” said Mike Galimi, Network Director at Hot Rod Magazine.

The original event started in Los Angeles and ended in Ohio with just 20 cars. Since then, the tour has grown exponentially to include thousands of cars from all over the world, spending a week traveling to different cities, with a little bit of everything for car enthusiasts from all walks of life.

The Beech Bend Raceway segment of the tour included an exclusive ride-along opportunity with MotorTrend’s 75th Anniversary Factory 5 Type 65 Coupe , the unveiling of a limited-edition HOT ROD die-cast Matchbox car, autocross, drag racing, food trucks, and parts vendors.

“Obviously it’s a car show with over 7,000 vehicles on site but we offer drag racing, and autocross, and later today we will have a shred fest which is a big burnout contest and exhibition style driving,” Galimi said.

Participants can choose to follow the tour for its entire 5-day run or purchase a pass for one or two of the tour stops. As hot rod fans travel from all over the country, many of the drivers following the tour have made the adventure a week-long family bonding event.

“Me and my sons drove down from Rhode Island over the weekend and got here Sunday and we checked in yesterday and just hung out at the hotel with all the people and then we’re going to go from here to Tennessee,” said driver John Beebee.

A love of automobiles, and the community of fans, inspires people to make the long, cross-country trip. Those following the tour are able to create friendships and bonds with one another over their passion for hot rods.

Bob Ashton, who has attended fourteen Hot Rod Power Tours, and his son came from Michigan to drive in the autocross event and follow the tour.

“For me, it’s a real honor because I’m able to do it with my son. Once a year, we get together and make a point of doing the power tour. We just have a blast and we get to have some good quality time for a whole week,” Ashton said.

Other fans come for the races, reveling in the roar of the engines, the smell of burning rubber, and the adrenaline rush that comes with them.

“America has a love affair with the automobile and we encourage you to come out and drive,” Galimi said. “For a lot of people, it’s a bucket list they’ve been talking about doing for many years.”

Those registered to compete in the races don’t have to have a high-performance vehicle or hot rod to enter.

“You can bring any car, it doesn’t matter. It’s all about the event and the tour. That’s what it’s about. Who you meet, things you see… it’s not about what you drive,” Beebee said.

The tour will be leaving Bowling Green on Tuesday morning and heading to the next stop at the Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon Tennessee.

Project X Headed to HOT ROD Power Tour!

Pilot transport is named the official vehicle transportation of hot rod power tour..

I n the coming days, thousands of cars and trucks will be traversing the U.S. Interstate Highway System, descending upon Bowling Green, Kentucky for the start of the 2024 HOT ROD Power Tour Driven by Continental Tire . One of our special guests on this year’s tour has a storied history on the big screen and on the pages of magazines— Project X , a 1957 Chevy. Pilot Transport has been trusted with moving the famed project car across the country from our LA-based offices to the starting point of the largest traveling car show, and back home at the conclusion of the event. In fact, Pilot Transport is the Official Vehicle Transportation of the HOT ROD Power Tour. Pilot has held that position for many years, and with hubs in Detroit and Arizona, they service the continental United States and Canada with relative ease and always with professionalism. They have moved dozens of cars for MotorTrend and HOT ROD over the years.

Related: The Super Long-Haul Gang Pilot Transport Named Official Vehicle Transportation of HOT ROD Power Tour West

Back to our featured guest, HOT ROD assumed stewardship of Project X almost five years ago and we revealed its latest iteration last year for the magazine’s 75th anniversary celebration. We teamed with MotorTrend TV’s HOT ROD Garage show to convert the classic Chevy from an electric-powered machine back to a gas-guzzling street monster thanks to a Chevrolet Performance ZZ632 crate engine. Pilot Transport picked it up after Lucky Costa, co-host of HOT ROD Garage television show and operator of Mobile Tech Lucky custom shop.

Lucky has been picking away at a list of updates that went untouched thanks to last year’s busy show schedule. We love a great, low stance; however, we were stuck with a Gasser look and couldn’t fit bigger wheels on the front because the headers poked out of the fenders and into the wheel wells.

Related: Project X Goes Back on the Gas With 1,004-HP ZZ632 Big-Block Swap

The HOT ROD Garage crew raided the Project X parts bin during last year’s rebuild. They found a pair of big-block Chevy headers from when X had one of Chevrolet Performance’s commemorative ZZ427 engines under its hood. The problem was the 427 is based on a 9.8-inch-tall deck height and a conventional set of cylinder heads. Our ZZ632 relies on a taller 10.2-inch-tall deck engine block and unique RSX cylinder heads , thus moving the headers further out and creating interference with a tall and wide wheel/tire package. Lucky also worked with QA1 to get the proper spring rates for the adjustable shocks for this combination. Last year, we were rolling on the stiff springs to account for the heavy battery that was in the trunk.

Currently, Project X is making its way across the country, safely tucked inside the Pilot Transport trailer, along with 4 other MotorTrend vehicles. Check the official HOT ROD Power Tour website for all the details on tickets, locations, and opening/closing times. See ya on tour!
