About this Artist

The fans were crushed. In 2000, HEPCAT, widely considered the premiere ska/rocksteady band in America, suddenly disbanded only weeks before the release of their latest record. There was no explanation. Just like that, 11 years of making music together came to a standstill. Then, after three years of silence in response to the pleas of fans and well after most had given up hope, readers thumbing through the LA Weekly came face to face with a huge, black-and-white smoking cat on a page that declared: “Hepcat Live at the House of Blues, 7/16/03.” That night, with an explosion of cheers from the crowd, Hepcat was back.

Hepcat was formed in 1989 by vocalist Greg Lee and vocalist/keyboardist Deston Berry, two unassuming reggae aficionados with modest aspirations. Their first album, Out of Nowhere (Moon Records, 1993), instantly became a classic ska record. Tours of North America and Europe solidified Hepcat’s reputation on the international ska/reggae scene. Their second album, Scientific (BYO Records, 1996), drew further praise.

Their third album, Right On Time, was released in 1998 on Hellcat/ Epitaph Records. Co-produced by Stoker (the drummer for General Public and Dexy’s Midnight Runners and the producer of The Specials and Dance Hall Crashers), Right On Time became their most successful album to date, both in terms of sales and critical acclaim. In the fall of 1999, the group began recording Push N Shove.

As the Hepcat sound evolved, work of mouth spread quickly, and the band’s performances began attracting a more diverse audience. Rastas, skate punks, swingers, rude boys, mods, and latin jazz fans are among those who unite to savor Hepcat’s sunny Caribbean melodies, soulful harmonies, and swing-inflected rhythms.

Out of Nowhere, which had been out of print for years, was re-released in 2004.

About Hepcat

Hepcat was among the most celebrated bands to emerge from the Southern California ska revival scene of the 1990s, winning fans with their infectious Caribbean melodies, soulful harmonies and swinging rhythms, all informed by elements of reggae, rock steady, R&B and jazz. Comprising vocalists Greg Lee and Alex Desert, keyboardist Deston Berry, guitarist Aaron Owens, bassist Dave Fuentes, saxophonists Efren Santana and Raul Talavera, trumpeter Kincaid Smith and drummer Scott Abels, Hepcat was formed in 1989; word quickly spread, and in 1993 they issued their debut LP, Out of Nowhere. After 1996's Scientific, they signed to Epitaph, touring as a featured artist on the following year's Warped Tour before releasing their third LP, Right on Time, in 1998 and Push N' Shove followed in summer 2000. Hepcat vocalist Greg Lee died on March 19, 2024; he was 53 years of age. ~ Jason Ankeny

George Strait Makes History With Record-Setting Concert At Kyle Field

Fans cheer at a George Strait concert in Kyle Field.

The “King of Country” music George Strait claimed another crown at his Texas A&M University concert over the weekend.

On Saturday, 110,905 fans attended Strait’s “The King at Kyle Field” concert, breaking the attendance record for a ticketed concert. Strait took center stage alongside Parker McCollum and Catie Offerman . In March, the performance was announced as Strait’s only Texas performance in 2024.

The previous record was held by the Grateful Dead from a 1977 performance in New Jersey for 107,019 fans, according to Billboard . Strait’s performance on Saturday also broke a previous record for the most attended event in Kyle Field.

“We got some Aggies out there? Oh yeah! I’m ashamed to say this, but this is my first time to ever be in Kyle Field. … Just invite me back, I’ll come!” Strait said Saturday.

At the show, Strait debuted “MIA in MIA” and “The Little Things,” two songs from his upcoming album “Cowboys and Dreamers,” set to release in September.

The Country Music Hall of Fame honoree has sold more than 105 million records worldwide. Strait is currently touring the U.S . with Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town until December, with stadium performances scheduled for Salt Lake City, Detroit, Chicago and Las Vegas.

Local news | ford model t club explores history through chesapeake civil war tour.

Chesapeake’s plethora of backroads, bordered by fields of corn and soy beans, offered a friendly environment for the Ford Model T Civil War Tour in Chesapeake. (Photo by Bob Ruegsegger/freelance)

Rob Sallada of the Albemarle Area Chapter of the Ford Model T Club International teamed up with Robert Hitchings of the Norfolk County Historical Society of Chesapeake to organize a 55-mile Civil War tour through Chesapeake following backroads to historic landmarks. Stops along the way included Beechwood, Superintendent’s House, Happer House and the Jackson Greys monument.

Along Shillelagh Road, Lake Drummond Causeway, Belle Haven Street and Ballahack Road, residents waved from their front yards and driveways as the antique eight-vehicle caravan of seven Model T’s and a Model A sedan delivery drove past their rural homes.

While the city of Chesapeake, formerly old Norfolk County, is crisscrossed with highways, the backroads, although paved, in the southern reaches of the municipality near the North Carolina-Virginia border have remained representative of the dirt roads and wagon trails of yesteryear.

Rob Sallada and Robert Hitchings prepare for the Model T Civil War Tour of Chesapeake. Stops along the way included Beechwood, Superintendent's House, Happer House and the Jackson Greys monument.

“The Model T Civil War Tour was really a coming together of two things,” said Sallada, a resident of Deep Creek. “Model T tours are a lot of fun wherever you go and whatever your highlight is. The Civil War part came from just talking with Mr. Hitchings. He was a referral from a Model A club member who had participated in one of Mr. Hitchings’ tours 10 or 15 years ago — long before I was involved in the program.”

Powered by a 177-cubic-inch, four-cylinder inline engine that produced 20 horsepower and a top speed of 45 mph, the Model T is most comfortable at slower speeds that would tend to impede traffic on well-traveled thoroughfares.

“I went about 42 mph in a Model T once, and that was like being at Busch Gardens,” Sallada said. “That was a little fast. Their sweet spot is 25 to 35 mph. That’s about right.” During the Civil War, many public buildings and churches around the area were put into service as hospitals, barracks and stables. The toll house on the highway, now Route 17, that ran parallel to the Dismal Swamp Canal served as a checkpoint for examining the credentials and identification of local citizens.

For Robert Hitchings, president of the Norfolk County Historical Society of Chesapeake and archivist at the Wallace History Room at Chesapeake Central Library, offering comments on local history is nothing new.

But riding in a Ford Model T was a new experience for the historian.

“All in all, this was an eventful day in my life,” Hitchings said. “Frankly speaking, the ride was quite different than I really expected. There was lots of noise, pulling on the choke and gear shifting. It was quite a feat learning how to drive in those days. We have come a long way in automobiles. I can appreciate my modern Subaru automatic.”

2024 Tour de France: How to watch, schedule, odds for cycling's top race

hepcat tour history

The biggest cycling event of the year - the 111th Tour de France -- kicks off Saturday from Florence, Italy. The 2024 Tour de France's unusual route starts in Italy for the first time ever to honor 100 years since the first Italian victory in the Tour by Ottavio Bottecchia in 1924. Also, due to the 2024 Summer Olympics, the Tour de France will not finish in Paris for the first time in event history.

The 21 stages will cover more than 2,000 miles from Saturday through July 21. Two-time defending winner Jonas Vingegaard looks to become just the ninth cyclist to win at least three Tour de France races. Last year's runner-up, Tadej Pogačar, is looking to do the same. He won in 2020 and 2021 before finishing second to Vingegaard in 2022 and 2023.

Here's what you need to know about this year's race:
