People Who Mysteriously Vanished From Cruise Ships

Juliet Bennett Rylah

Ah, cruising—a seemingly idyllic way to travel that promises relaxation, exotic destinations, and endless buffets. Yet, not all tales from the open seas end so blissfully. The unsettling phenomenon of missing people lost on cruise ships has sparked intrigue and concern in equal measure. These giant floating cities are supposed to be bastions of leisure, but the occasional mystery of unexplained disappearances reminds us that the seas can be unpredictable and even sinister.

Consider the case of Amy Lynn Bradley , who vanished from a Royal Caribbean ship in 1998, leaving behind a baffling trail of potential sightings but no concrete answers. Then there's Russel Terence Rebello, a member of the crew aboard the ill-fated Costa Concordia. While the ship's wreckage was explored and documented, traces of Russel remain elusive. Another haunting case is that of Merrian Carver, who boarded the Celebrity Cruises' Mercury in 2004 and was never seen again, with the circumstances surrounding her disappearance raising more questions than answers.

These stories are just a few among many puzzling instances that continue to captivate those who follow maritime mysteries. Curious for more? Dive into additional stories of people disappearing on a cruise ship and explore the unsettling tales that blur the line between vacation bliss and maritime lore.

A Mysterious Photo Might Point To What Happened To Amy Lynn Bradley

A Mysterious Photo Might Point To What Happened To Amy Lynn Bradley

The disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley is a very bizarre story. Bradley was a 23-year-old woman from Virginia who went missing while on a Royal Caribbean International cruise with her family in March 1998. On the evening she disappeared, Bradley was at a club on the ship. She shared a drink with members of the house band after their set, then went off on her own at about 1 a.m., according to one of the bandmates . Bradley was later spotted by her father at about 5:30 a.m., and he said she was asleep on the balcony of their cabin. But by 6 a.m., Bradley had vanished. At the time of her disappearance, the ship had been headed from Aruba to Curaçao, Antilles. The ship docked as the search for Bradley began. A pair of tourists claimed to have seen Bradley in Curaçao, saying they recognized her tattoos, yet Bradley remained missing.

In 1999, a Navy man claimed to have encountered her in a brothel. He said she told him her name and asked for help, saying she was being held captive there. In 2005, someone said they saw Bradley in Barbados. On an episode of Dr. Phil , Bradley's parents said they had been sent a photo of a woman that could have been Bradley via an anonymous sender. In the photo, the woman is scantily dressed, which adds fuel to the theory that Bradley was kidnapped and sold into sexual slavery.

Rebecca Coriam Was A Disney Cruise Employee Who Vanished At Sea

Rebecca Coriam Was A Disney Cruise Employee Who Vanished At Sea

Rebecca Coriam , 24, was an employee on the Disney Wonder cruise ship. She disappeared on May 22, 2011, as the ship was sailing off the coast of Mexico. She was spotted on surveillance video talking on one of the ship’s internal phones and appeared upset. Another passenger approached her and asked her if she was okay, to which she appeared to say yes. She then hung up and walked away.

The most common theories are that she was swept overboard while at the crew pool or that she jumped or fell from Deck 5. Yet no theory is particularly compelling, and what truly happened remains a mystery. Others say she was in a turbulent relationship and could have been upset, yet her family states that she would have never willingly gone overboard. Even authorities clash over what really happened to Rebecca Coriam, with some stating it was a simple, yet tragic case of someone slipping overboard and others alleging foul play .

George Allen Smith IV Disappeared On His Honeymoon

George Allen Smith IV Disappeared On His Honeymoon

George Smith disappeared from the MS Brilliance of the Seas in July 2005. He and his new bride, Jennifer, were on a two-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise and were headed from Greece to Turkey. It is believed that Smith went overboard, but how that happened is a mystery.

The Smiths had dinner before engaging in a long night of drinking. Both were reported to have been very drunk. The Smiths' on-ship neighbor said he later heard loud talking, an argument, and a thud coming from the Smiths' cabin. Blood was later found on the canopy beneath the cabin, indicating that Smith had fallen or had been pushed. Jennifer was not with Smith when he went missing. She had wandered off elsewhere and passed out in a hallway. She was woken up and led back to her cabin by crew members in the morning, where neither she nor the crew members noticed anything amiss. Jennifer slept three hours before heading to a massage appointment.

She claims to not remember much of the night prior, and to this day, no one admits to knowing what happened to Smith. Some believe he was shoved overboard by men he encountered at the casino, while others believe, in his state of intoxication, he became disoriented and fell.

Fariba Amani Disappeared While On A Cruise With Her Boyfriend

Fariba Amani Disappeared While On A Cruise With Her Boyfriend

Fariba Amani , a 47-year-old Vancouver, Canada, woman, vanished in February 2012. She was on a Bahamas Celebration cruise with her boyfriend of eight months at the time, 46-year-old Ramiz Golshani.

Golshani said he last saw Amani at the ship's gift shop at about 1 a.m. before heading to the casino alone. When he returned to their cabin, she was not there, and he went to sleep. In the morning, at about 7 a.m., he awoke and looked for her. After an hour, he told the ship's crew that he could not locate his companion. They, too, searched for Amani, but she was never seen again.

Amani’s sister said that her sister's relationship was troubled and that Amani even once considered hiring a private investigator to see if Golshani was cheating on her. However, there is no concrete evidence to suggest foul play was involved in Golshani's disappearance, and what truly happened to her remains a mystery.

Russel Terence Rebello Died A Hero

Russel Terence Rebello Died A Hero

Russel Terence Rebello , 33, died a hero. He was a crew member aboard the Costa Concordia , which smashed into a reef and capsized in January of 2012 off Giglio Island, Italy. A total of 32 people were killed in the wreck, and Rebello stayed aboard to help other passengers get off, giving one of them his lifejacket.

For months, it was not clear what happened to Rebello. The grim conclusion to the mystery came three years later when Rebello's body was found, still on the ship.

Annette Mizener Won A Cruise, Then Disappeared

Annette Mizener , 37, won a Carnival cruise to the Mexican Riviera in December 2004. She took her parents and her teenage daughter along for the trip.

On the night of her disappearance, she sang karaoke with her daughter, then hit the casino. Her parents quickly became concerned when Mizener did not show up to play Bingo with them as scheduled later that evening.

Mizener's purse was discovered on one of the ship's lower decks, near a railing, leading many to believe she somehow fell or was pushed overboard. Yet an extensive search conducted by the Coast Guard and the Navy failed to find any trace of Mizener, and the FBI's investigation was inconclusive. The only camera that might have caught what happened was blocked by a map of the ship.

Merrian Carver Disappeared On An Alaskan Cruise

Merrian Carver Disappeared On An Alaskan Cruise

Merrian Carver, 40, disappeared from a Celebrity Cruises ship in August 2004.

Carver had gone on the trip alone and disappeared on only the second day of a seven-day Alaskan tour. Though one of the crew members reported that Carver seemed to be missing, the ship failed to respond. When they found Carver's belongings still in her cabin after the cruise had ended, they simply donated them to charity. They never reported her disappearance to police. It was Carver's family who filed a missing persons report after not hearing from her for days. They were not even aware at the time of the filing that Carver had gone on a cruise.

Royal Caribbean, who owns Celebrity Cruises, ruled the disappearance a suicide, but without a proper investigation, Carver's family will never know.

Hue Pham And Hue Tran Vanished While Celebrating Their 50th Anniversary

Hue Pham, 70, and Hue Tran, 65, went missing while on a Carnival Cruise ship heading from Barbados to Aruba in May 2005. The couple had gone on the cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were traveling with their daughter and granddaughter.

The couple vanished from the ship, leaving behind only their shoes as a clue, which were found on the ship's deck. Though some have speculated the couple committed suicide, their son , Michael Pham, doesn't buy it. He said they were happy and had been planning a trip to Vietnam to see relatives.

Micki Kanesaki Was Allegedly Murdered By Her Ex

A convoluted case surrounded the alleged murder of Micki Kanesaki , 52, who disappeared from a Mediterranean cruise in 2006. Kanesaki went on the cruise with her ex-husband, California lawyer Lonnie Kocontes, 48. At about 1 a.m., ship officials say she left her cabin to fetch a cup of tea. Her ex later woke up to find her missing.

Kanesaki's body was discovered days later on the shores of Calabria. Kocontes indicated that Kanesaki, who had been his second wife, may have been suicidal, though her family refuted those claims. For years, Kanesaki's case went unsolved. Kocontes remarried a third, then a fourth time.

In 2013, Kocontes was arrested for Kanesaki's murder. Prosecutors alleged that he had strangled her and tossed her overboard. Kocontes's third wife, who had testified on his behalf during initial investigations in 2006, did a 180 in 2013, telling officials that Kocontes had killed Kanesaki. His motive, prosecutors allege, had been to inherit Kanesaki's estate.

Christopher Caldwell Disappeared While On A Trip With His Betrothed

Christopher Caldwell, 36, disappeared from a Carnival Cruise ship headed from Miami, FL, to Cozumel, Mexico, in July  2004. Caldwell had gone on the cruise with his betrothed.

According to a letter written by Caldwell's family as posted on International Cruise Victims, Caldwell and his fiancée had dinner and drinks before his fiancée decided to turn in, and Caldwell decided to visit the ship casino alone. When Caldwell's fiancée awoke in the morning, she found that Caldwell had never returned.

Caldwell was last spotted on the ship's deck. The bartender who saw him said he seemed extremely intoxicated. No one knows what happened next, though it is suspected that Caldwell toppled overboard.

John Halford Vanished On The Last Day Of His Cruise

John Halford , 63, disappeared from the ship Thomson Spirit while on an Egyptian cruise in April 2011.

He disappeared on the last day of the cruise before the ship would dock. He was slated to see his wife the following day at the airport when he returned home to Milton Keynes, England. He sent her a text message, then ate dinner and went for drinks at a bar on the ship's upper deck. He was last seen at about 12:30 a.m. His bags were packed, and his glasses, phone, and passport were found in his room.

Though Halford was last spotted drinking, no one who interacted with him thought he was drunk, and his wife said he gave no indication of being suicidal. No one knows what happened to him, whether he fell overboard or something else.

In the middle of the ocean, no one can hear you scream.

FBI investigates 'suspicious death' of cruise ship passenger

Carnival Sunshine

The FBI is investigating the "suspicious death" of a woman who was on a five -day cruise from South Carolina to the Bahamas, the agency announced .

The 44-year-old woman, who was not identified by name in the announcement, died on a voyage to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, the FBI's field office in Columbia, South Carolina, said Sunday.

The cruise left Charleston on Feb. 27, said Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. She most likely died early Feb. 28, said Kevin Wheeler, a public affairs specialist for the FBI's Columbia field office.

Medical staff and crew members attempted lifesaving measures, the FBI said.

The woman had been traveling with her husband, Lupoli said. Her husband got off the cruise in Nassau on March 1, and her remains were also removed, he said.

FBI's evidence investigators processed the passenger's room once the ship returned to Charleston as planned on Saturday, the agency said.

The FBI said that the death was an isolated incident and that other passengers faced no threat before or after the woman was found dead.

Nobody is in custody, Wheeler said. He said he could not comment on the circumstances of the woman's death or on any information about her husband or the status of the autopsy.

Lupoli said in a statement that authorities in the Bahamas "have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy" and that Carnival is "fully cooperating."

"This is a matter for authorities in The Bahamas and Charleston and we have no further comments," Lupoli said.

Spokespeople for the Royal Bahamas Police Force could not immediately be reached for comment.

The unidentified female was pronounced dead on the ship of unknown causes.

The FBI is investigating a "suspicious death" of a female passenger aboard a Carnival cruise ship while it was en route to the Bahamas .

The incident occurred on Carnival's Sunshine during its Feb. 27 voyage from the United States to Nassau, Bahamas, when medical staff and other crew members aboard the ship were made aware of an unresponsive passenger and life-saving measures were immediately attempted, according to a statement from the FBI's field office in Columbia, South Carolina.

Despite the crew's best efforts, the unidentified female passenger was pronounced dead on the ship of currently unknown causes, though Carnival released a subsequent statement indicating that they believe the passenger died of natural causes.

"While we continue to cooperate with authorities, all indications pertaining to the death of a guest on board Carnival Sunshine suggest that it was a natural death due to a medical condition," Carnival said in the statement released on Tuesday. "We will defer to the FBI on any specific details which may possibly be released at a later date as we fully respect the investigative process, but our initial emergency medical response was appropriate and it appears that this was indeed a medical situation that sadly resulted in the death of a guest."

This incident remains under investigation by the FBI.

"The FBI investigates certain crimes on the high seas, as well as suspicious deaths of U.S. persons," the FBI said. "As such, FBI Evidence Response Team (ERT) members responded to process the passenger's room once the ship returned to the Charleston port on March 4."

The "suspicious death" was isolated, according to the FBI, and there was no threat to any other passengers before or after the passenger was found deceased.

FBI investigating "suspicious" death of a woman on a Carnival cruise ship

By Gina Martinez

Updated on: March 6, 2023 / 7:24 PM EST / CBS News

The FBI is investigating the "suspicious" death of a woman aboard a Carnival cruise ship traveling from Charleston, South Carolina, to Nassau, Bahamas, last month.

On Feb. 27, Carnival's Sunshine crew members and medical staff responded to an unresponsive female passenger, the FBI Columbia field office said in a news release. Despite their best efforts, the woman was pronounced dead on the ship, the release said.

The incident was isolated and posed no threats to other passengers, according to the FBI.

When the ship returned to Charleston on March 4, FBI officials searched the dead passenger's room for evidence, according to the news release.

The FBI said it investigates suspicious deaths of U.S. citizens as well as "certain crimes on the high seas." Officials have not disclosed the identity of the passenger or the cause of death and said the incident remains under investigation.

Carnival said they are "fully cooperating" with the investigation and that the incident is being handled by authorities in the Bahamas and in Charleston.

"Both the deceased and her husband were debarked in Nassau and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy," the cruise line said in a statement to CBS News.

Mystery in Woman's 'Suspicious' Death Aboard Alaska-Bound Cruise Ship After Alleged Domestic Incident

Authorities are investigating the death of 39-year-old Kristy Manzanares who died aboard a Princess Cruise ship on Tuesday after an alleged domestic dispute

Federal authorities are investigating the mysterious death of a 39-year-old woman who died on an Alaska-bound cruise ship on Tuesday after an alleged domestic dispute, PEOPLE confirms.

Kristy Manzanares, from Utah, died on the Emerald Princess cruise ship, an FBI official confirms to PEOPLE. Although few details have been released about the situation, Princess Cruises officials said the dispute occurred at around 9 p.m. and resulted in the woman’s death, ABC reports.

“They just said, ‘Security breach! Security breach!’ ” one witness, Jen Larson, told ABC News . “We could tell by the sound of his voice that it was something really scary and really serious.”

Other witnesses told ABC that they heard a woman “screaming for her life.”

Larsen said that a member of her family saw Manzanares’ young daughter distraught just after the incident.

“She was just really scared,” Larson recalled. “She said, ‘I just want to go and see my mom! I just want to see my mom! What’s happening?’ ”

The ship set off from Seattle on Sunday on a week-long trip but was diverted to Juneau, Alaska, where it docked hours early as a result of the incident, CBS News reports. The Emerald Princess boat was carrying 3,400 passengers and 1,100 crew members, according to CBS.

Passengers were on lockdown for hours before being allowed to leave the boat, CBS reports.

One man told KTVA that he and his wife were two floors above the site of the incident.

“There was a lot of yelling started up again between men, fighting you know, somebody hurt somebody’s sister and it was a family dispute,” Charles Rowlen alleged.

He recalled his wife seeing a bruised, bloodied man near the boat’s rail, threatening to jump.

“She thought he was going to jump over the rail, and at one point he put his hand on the rail and set his rear on it,” Rowlen told the station. “She started yelling, ‘Get back in!’ ”

The cruise line told ABC that crew members detained one man in the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all those impacted by this tragic event,” Princess Cruises said in a statement to ABC.

A press conference about the situation is scheduled for 11 a.m. local time, an FBI spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The FBI Columbia field office said on Feb. 27, Carnival’s Sunshine crew members as well as medical staff had responded to an unresponsive woman on board, in a news release obtained by CBS News. She was pronounced dead on the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson Matt Lupoli told CNN in a statement that the woman and her husband were “debarked in Nassau and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy.” Lupoli said they are also cooperating with both the FBI and authorities in the Bahamas.

Once the ship returned to Charleston, South Carolina on March 4, officials with the FBI searched the couple’s room for evidence, CBS News said.

The FBI said the incident seems to be isolated and there was no threat to others on the cruise, CNN reported.

“The FBI investigates certain crimes on the high seas, as well as suspicious deaths of U.S. persons,” FBI spokesperson Kevin Wheeler said in a statement obtained by WCSC.

The FBI said the incident remains under investigation. The woman’s cause and manner of death have not been released.

Fbi to investigate death of 12-year-old boy who fell from balcony of royal caribbean cruise ship.

Molly Magennis

The FBI will investigate the death of a boy who fell head-first over a balcony railing on a luxury cruise ship on Sunday.

The 12-year-old was playing with friends he had made on the cruise, which was travelling to Galveston in Texas, when he toppled over the railing of his family’s 14th-floor room .

He fell six decks below into the Central Park area of the ship — a plaza filled with bars, shops and restaurants.

Staff tried to save the boy but he died before the ship could dock and get help.

The FBI has now confirmed it will investigate the boy’s death, The Washington Post reported , as the “primary federal agency authorised to investigate potential crimes on the high seas”.

It will conduct its investigation alongside the US Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection.

The accident took place on the family’s last night of a seven-day cruise of the Caribbean on the 16-deck Harmony Of The Seas.

It’s understood the boy was on the cruise with his family, including two sisters, for a birthday celebration.

The boy fell six decks below into the Central Park area.

In the wake of the tragedy witnesses posted about the accident online, with many saying they were shaken up by what happened.

“I witnessed the incident with the 12yo boy that passed away, I stayed with him the entire time hoping to see any sign of life and to let him know he wasn’t alone when he passed,” one anonymous passenger posted on Facebook.

Another said she saw the incident unfold as they were looking down on Central Park from the pool deck.

“We did not see whether he jumped or was playing around,” Christa Schoolfield said.

Harmony Of The Seas can hold up to 7000 passengers.

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship is one of the world’s largest and can hold up to 7000 passengers.

It features multiple water slides, a zip-line, a surfing simulator and live entertainment shows.

Royal Caribbean said it was “deeply saddened” by the boy’s death.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.

“For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

FBI investigates mysterious death of 12-year-old boy on cruise ship

cruise ship mysterious death

The FBI has launched an inquiry into the death of a 12-year-old boy aboard a cruise ship.

Pierson ‘Piers’ Davis was on vacation with his parents and two sisters on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Harmony of the Seas.

The ship was on the last night of its seven-day Caribbean voyage on September 7.

Approximately five hours before the ship was scheduled to dock in Galveston, Texas, Piers fell from his family’s 13th-floor cabin balcony, dropping five stories into the Central Park plaza below.

Royal Caribbean staff attempted to resuscitate Pierson, but unfortunately, he passed away before the ship could dock.

cruise ship mysterious death

Now, the FBI has taken control of the investigation into Piers’ death as his family commemorated him on what would have been his 13th birthday.

Piers’ mother, Audra Davis, paid homage to her son before his funeral, writing: “The thing every parent hopes and prays does not happen to them. It happened to me. It happened to us.”

She continued: “I don’t have many words right now. My family and I were on a cruise vacation the first week of September and the day before we were to arrive at port the unthinkable happened.

“My son tragically died. He was 12 and would have turned 13 later this month.”

“To all those who have reached out to me and my family to offer your support, love, prayers and good intentions, thank you. It means everything to us.”

While on the cruise, the family became friends with Becky Potter and her husband Gavin, who captured some photos of the families dining together.

“We walked away talking about your precious family and your dedication to your kids!” Becky said to Piers’ mother.

“My heart couldn’t break any more for such an amazing family!”

cruise ship mysterious death

An obituary from Piers’ family described him as having a ‘natural confidence and social ease,’ as well as being ‘wise beyond his years.’

Mysterious death of an MSC Orchestra cruise ship crew in Durban (South Africa)

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are currently investigating the death of a 29-year-old female crew on MSC Cruises ' ship MSC Orchestra in Durban (South Africa) on Thursday, March 24.

National police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the woman (from South Africa's Eastern Cape province) had been working on the liner and on duty when she had been found dead.

He said the police on Maydon Wharf had "registered an inquest docket and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.”

According to the public relations manager at MSC Cruises in South Africa, Lebo Mavuso, the company was appealing to the media to give the family privacy.

“The death, which we believe to have been of an accidental nature, is being investigated by the local authorities and we will continue to provide every assistance.”

Mavuso added the company would not be revealing the identity of the woman or further details.

According to a colleague of the woman, she had been found in a pool of blood. She had suffered injuries to her neck and head, bleeding to death.

There had been a medical emergency announcement over the public address system of the ship, and medical staff had gone to help the crew, but could not save her.

The woman was working in the Messhall (crew lounge/dining room) and that was her first contract on the liner.

MSC Orchestra restarted operations in South Africa in January 2022 after pausing for a month. The liner is currently sailing 3- and 4-night roundtrips from homeport Durban.

Breaking news, florida cruise passengers sickened by unknown illness: ‘my throw up was bright blue’.

Several passengers on board a Florida-based cruise ship came down with an unknown illness that caused one woman to hurl vomit tainted with a mysterious shade of blue, according to a report.

Miranda Hill got sick shortly after departing Jacksonville on the Carnival Cruise Line’s Elation ship last week with her boyfriend’s family.

While she initially thought she was simply sea-sick, it soon became clear it was something more

“My throw up was bright blue and I have never eaten anything blue and every time I look up blue throw up, it has to deal with a poisoning,” she told First Coast News .

So instead of enjoying a relaxing, five-day vacation on the sea, the woman said she spent half her time on the cruise hooked up to an IV in the ship’s infirmary.

And she wasn’t the only one. Members of her boyfriend’s family, some of her friends and other passengers suffered from similar symptoms, according to Hill.

“My friend who I came with, she threw up a live parasite,” she told the outlet.

On Monday, Carnival Cruise Lines reportedly said people onboard the Elation ship had symptoms of gastroenteritis, or the stomach flu.

When reached for comment about the incident, a Carnival Cruise Lines spokesperson told the Post they “don’t have anything to share” at this time, but said the company would provide information when it became available.

Miranda, who believes she had food poisoning, says she and her boyfriend were each given a 95-dollar credit from the cruise line after the ship docked back in Jacksonville.

“I just hope they do better, they clean their ship, they were telling us to wash their hands but who knows if the cooks are washing their hands,” Hill said.

Every Sea-mergency on Doctor Odyssey

Portrait of Rebecca Alter

Have you climbed aboard? Have you hoisted the sail? Have you checked into your stateroom? Have you, like the greatest television-viewing minds in America, watched the show that is perhaps single-handedly keeping network television vital in 2024: Doctor Odyssey ? Professional madman Ryan Murphy ’s latest joint premiered on September 26 and combines the blue-sky good vibes of an aughties USA procedural with the batshit weekly emergencies of his 9-1-1 series. Murphy’s recent shows at his legacy home base, FX, have been muddled and baroque, but on ABC, he’s got the goods, as evidenced by the premiere episode of his new show set on a luxury cruise ship. It stars Joshua Jackson as a doctor (Dr. Max, but people literally call him “Doctor Odyssey”) with a less-than-mysterious backstory (he got COVID and decided to devote his life to having fun at sea) and Don Johnson giving off radiant Love Boat vibes as the captain.

This show is immensely silly, sunny fun, and the whole thing is refreshingly low stress, even if this one cruise ship is the site of more than enough emergencies to hold its own in ABC’s Thursday-night block, sandwiched between 9-1-1 and Grey’s Anatomy . It would really be a floating death trap if Doc Odyssey weren’t so gosh-darn good at doing elaborate medical procedures at sea. As each episode brings aboard a new cast of guests with their own slate of problems, we’ll keep track of every disaster that goes down on deck (and over the edge) all season long.

Too Much Shrimp Rachel Dratch and her husband, Frasier’s boss at the radio station on the original Frasier, end up in the sick bay after the sailing-away dinner. He’s presenting with an allergic reaction to antibiotics, only he isn’t on any. It’s Doctor Odyssey’s first night onboard and he is stumped. Nurse Practitioner Avery Morgan (Phillipa Soo), however, has worked aboard the Odyssey for years and sees this all the time: Dratch’s man’s got iodine poisoning from eating too much of the unlimited shrimp at the seafood buffet. This happens so often on the boat they’ve got a name for it: seal disease. These people are why Red Lobster went bankrupt, but then again, if I had a nickel for every time I ingested a medically problematic amount of shrimp, you know?

Broke Dick It’s obviously a Murph joint when you’re only 16 minutes into an episode and a guy says he “snapped my pee-pee in half.” The medical team is called into a stateroom where a guy’s dick has been bent in two while he was, well, rockin’ the boat. It’s a penile fracture, something that normally happens when the girl’s on top and comes down too hard; Doctor Odyssey knows this from firsthand undergraduate experience. The team patches it up and tells the couple they have to lie low for four to six weeks, but Phillipa Soo, NP, tells the couple she knows a tantric-sex specialist in the next port who can teach them alternative ways to consummate their marriage.

Waterslide Throat Kick Seemingly immediately after OD-ing on all you-can-eat shrimp, Mr. and Mrs. Dratch find themselves in another emergency. The couple went down the waterslide one after another, and when Rachel slid off she throat-kicked her husband to the point that he was knocked out and unable to breathe. Doc Odd does a penknife incision to the man’s neck (hate this) and brings him down to the sick bay to insert a tracheal tube and physically wrench his sternoclavicular joint back into place, which the nurses find very risky. Doc Odd goes against protocol, though, and saves this schmo’s life a second time in one night. When the Dratches disembark at the end of the episode, they say that despite it all they still had the best week of their lives.

Man Overboard! By emergency No. 4, you start to learn a bit about how this show’s structure will work going forward. Medical situations escalate in severity and grow more serious in tone over the course of an episode. We’ll see how the situations occur, either in flashbacks (waterslide, broke dick, shrimp freak) or as they happen in the moment, as is the case with the young man who, after taking molly with his girlfriend at the on-ship nightclub, sneaks out with her to the upper deck, where he stands on the railing, does the “I’m king of the world!” thing, and immediately topples overboard. Cap’n Don Johnson is alerted at the brig (terminology check?) and orders the ship to drop buoys, informing us that only 15 percent of overboard cases survive. The medical team peels out in a speedboat to find him, and Doc Odyssey does what Male Nurse Tristan (Sean Teale) calls an “epic” dive to save him from hypothermia. All in a sailing’s work for Doctor Odyssey.

Emotional Emergency of the Week Tristan confides in his new supervisor, with whom he has to work every single day, that he’s had a crush on his co-nurse for years. Dr. Odyssey immediately turns around and makes out with her. In Tristan’s face! While “Despacito” plays!

Correction: A previous version of this story misstated Avery Morgan’s title. She is a nurse practitioner.
