Work and Travel in Japan

Help us grow. share what you know about getting work in japan for travellers., volunteer and paid work opportunities in japan for travellers.

Many foreigners, hold a lifelong desire to travel to Japan, perhaps because the culture is so unique and exotic, especially for westerners. It has a reputation for being expensive and difficult for outsiders to assimilate into, so it’s best to be well-prepared before attempting to work and travel here. However, for those that are willing to push through the culture shock, the rewards for working and travelling in Japan can be great. Read on through our guide to making the most of your adventure in the Land of the Rising Sun. 1. Work in IT in Japan The tech field, of course, is constantly expanding and evolving, and Japan is a country often on the cutting-edge of technological advances. If you have good programming or software engineering skills, you can often find work without speaking much Japanese, which is generally a barrier to entry for many foreigners seeking work in Japan. 2. Teaching English at cram schools  Teaching English as a native speaker is the most common position for foreigners looking to work and travel in Japan. The jobs often don’t pay very well, but backpackers can find work teaching at any time of year, and therefore is a great starting point for new arrivals looking to learn about Japanese culture. 3. Caregiving in an ageing home It is common knowledge that Japan has the highest proportion of elderly citizens of any country in the world. This has created a busy and booming market for elder care, since many young people in the big cities live in cramped apartments are too busy with work to keep their parents at home. If you enjoy working with older people, you don’t necessarily need any experience or even great Japanese language skills to start working in elder care in Japan.

VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR JAPAN

Japan allows several nationalities from having to obtain a tourist visa before entering the country. Citizens from most European countries, United States, Australia, and Argentina do not need to get the Japan Tourist Visa since they are considered visa-exempt countries for tourism purposes. Nationals from any of those regions can stay in Japan for a maximum of 90 days visa-free and are assigned Temporary Visitor status. Under the single-entry regulation, tourists can remain in Japan for up to 30 days, but this tourist visa is valid for a period of up to 90 days. Tourists can also apply for a double-entry visa for 2 short trips within a 6-month period. An E-Visa option is upcoming, but has yet to be released, likely due to the pandemic. Citizens of China, Russia, the Phillippines, Vietnam and CIS countries will need a tourist visa sorted before entering the country.

SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN JAPAN

Spring work.

For being a relatively small, island-based country, Japan enjoys a wide variety of climates. Visitors are attracted not only to the cities but to mountain resorts and organic farms in small rural villages. Backpackers have their choice from a variety of beautiful locations when finding work in hospitality.  Springtime is the best point in the year to find hospitality work, with many visitors coming over to witness the cherry blossoms but before western tourists start to arrive on summer vacation en masse. There are hotels alongside hot springs where you can volunteer in exchange for a bed, as well as hostels in the big city of Hokkaido where you can learn the art of running a hostel.

SUMMER JOBS

We recommend finding a work and travel opportunity at one of Japan’s many organic farms in the summer months. There are the usual fruit and vegetable farms, but also bee farms where honey is harvested, and terraced farms for rice.  You’ll learn unique growing methods that will give you an edge back home if you decide to continue in the gardening or landscaping field. Just be aware that summers in Japan can be extremely hot, so you should be in good physical condition.

Many people say autumn is the best time of year to visit Japan, since the weather is at its most pleasant and mild.  It’s a great time to join historical conservation projects in the country. You’ll have the option of working in far off temples or hosting groups that visit these sites. All you need to partake in these projects is an interest in history and a willingness to work.

Japan has proudly hosted the winter Olympics before, and it is clear to see why - the ski resorts are very popular. Backpackers can find work and travel opportunities at these places in Nagano, Niigata, and Yamagata prefecture, even if you don’t have any winter sports experience. How? Often au pairs are needed to watch after children, or chalet cleaners to keep the resorts clean.

ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN JAPAN

Japan is an extremely modern country, with all the comforts of home and then some. You shouldn’t have any concerns about health issues or safety while working and travelling in Japan.  The challenges for a foreigner in Japan come with understanding the nuances of social behaviour within the culture. As a westerner, it can be difficult to grasp the priority of “the group” over the individual. You must learn to respect these social constructs, however, or you will not be embraced by your employers. Some ex-pats complain that even after years of living in Japan and learning the language fluently, they never truly feel welcome. Japan is certainly an enticing and mysterious bucket-list country for working travellers. So the only question remains - are you ready to start planning your Japanese adventure?

Guide to Jobs in Yokohama

By Camilla Chandra | December 2020

When people think of finding a job in Japan , they tend to exclusively imagine a major firm somewhere in Tokyo. However, you might find that it’s neighboring city, Yokohama, is just as impressive. The port city continues to draw attention for its rapid international businesses and new technological advancement. You would be surprised by how many jobs in Yokohama are available, from entry-level, mid-career, to senior-level positions. With a high density of major national and foreign companies, it has since become the recent focal point for ambitious and eager job hunters.

Securing a career in Japan is all about broadening your options in the first place, so we have taken the initiative to make an updated guide to full-time jobs in Yokohama that will definitely help you start your career on the right path.

This article is a subsection of our jobs in Japan for foreigners article. Please visit our page if you want a more thorough guide on finding jobs in Japan.

From Beginner to Pro

Our bi-weekly emails for beginners to low intermediate students will give you the tips and motivation to self-study Japanese your way to Japanese fluency.

Why Jobs in Yokohama?

Known as Japan's leading port city, Yokohama has become the epicenter for international business. While it primarily thrives from the export and import center due to its strategic location, you will find that major companies from various industries choose to establish their headquarters there. Since then, the city has developed the IT, science, and manufacturing sector. The fact that Yokohama is situated half an hour away from the south of Tokyo means the tourism sector also flourishes.

Lifestyle-wise, Yokohama has all the favorable access that Tokyo offers the cost of living that is comparatively lower than the cost in Tokyo . Average apartments in the city tend to be ¥20,000 yen cheaper than apartments in Tokyo , and ¥100,000 less for high-end homes. Many have also noted that Yokohama offers better peace of mind than Tokyo, with its abundant sightseeing spots, natural sanctuaries, and endless mountain and ocean views. The bayside city is rich with beautiful natural landscapes. There are many awesome things to do in Tokyo , but Yokohama is an excellent option for individuals who want to step away from the intense limelight and buzz of city.

English Teacher/Instructor Jobs in Yokohama

Granted, kindergarten and school are anything but the sleek, modern office typical of the corporate environment, but that doesn't make teaching jobs in Yokohama any less challenging—or rewarding—than the rest. As the second-largest city next to Tokyo, Yokohama is high in population density, and that means there is a great demand for expatriates and graduates to work in English-teaching positions. A number of well-established and newly built kindergartens and schools are looking for full-time English teachers.

The great thing about English jobs in Yokohama, like anywhere else in Japan, is that it can be considered an entry-level position. Oftentimes, schools or institutions are open for foreigners with no prior experience. However, you will need to have Native-level English proficiency, a relevant university degree, and — perhaps, above all — a bright personality.

Keep in mind that the higher education and the more established the school is, the more they will require prior experience and qualifications. For example, while it is acceptable to have an undergraduate degree to teach children primarily between the ages of 3 to 14, institutes will want a Master’s degree or TEFL certifications for English instructors in private international high schools and universities.

Typical Base Salary : ¥2,500,000- ¥3,500,000

It's also worth mentioning that some schools favor applicants with conversational-level Japanese proficiency, so improving your Japanese can be the key to standing out among other candidates.

Looking for part-time English positions?

If you love to interact with children and want to pursue a career in education, we have provided the ultimate guideline to English teaching jobs in Japan ! However, if you are unable to commit full-time, One Coin English is currently looking for enthusiastic individuals to apply for their part-time position in Yokohama !

Engineering and IT Jobs in Yokohama

Many leading IT firms and global tech companies have established their main office and R&D branch in Yokohama. Subsequently, in recent years, Yokohama has also welcomed a number of startups and international companies, making the city a concentrated area of software and tech companies.  However, the IT and engineering industry in Japan has been facing a certain conundrum. On one hand, business is thriving. On the other hand, there is not enough professional workforce available on the job market. If you ever went to any job boards or websites, you will be quick to assess that many positions in IT and engineering are open. And because most (if not all) companies need developers, programmers, and engineers, it’s safe to say that you will find many IT jobs in Yokohama vacant.

While many companies in Yokohama are on a hiring surge for human resources in IT , that doesn’t mean anyone is eligible to apply. Undeniably, there is a high variety of IT jobs in Yokohama, from back-end developers, data scientists, to IT consultants. That means that the ranges of skills and expertise are considerable. You will undoubtedly need a degree in computer science and you have to confirm that you are apt in handling certain software or familiar with specific programming languages.

Typical Annual Base Salary: ¥3,000,000- ¥5,000,000 (but varies between companies)

HRM and Recruiter Jobs in Yokohama

Hrm jobs in yokohama.

There are also companies in Yokohama looking for human resources professionals. The very core duty of the HR department is to manage the company’s employees, so the position often demands the right balance between emotional intelligence, good communication skills, and general knowledge of the business. Consequently, because working in HR entails various complex tasks, even entry-level jobs in human resources in Yokohama require a minimum of one to three years of professional experience. This is why it is crucial to find prior experience through an internship while networking along the way.

Jobs in Yokohama related to HR are often mid-career positions, so it is the perfect opportunity for anyone who is looking to boost their career after gaining a few years of experience at their previous firm. HR jobs in Yokohama include talent management jobs, administrator, human resource specialists, business partner, and HR managers. High competency in Japanese and English is usually preferred, particularly if it is a global firm that deals with diverse employees.

Recruiters in Yokohama

While recruiting is part of human resources, you may find that the recruitment industry in Japan is more inclusive to both experienced and non-experienced applicants. There are two main options for becoming a recruiter: working internally for a company or working under a recruitment agency. Oftentimes, people fall under the latter category. Many companies, particularly small to medium enterprises, cannot allocate the time and resources dedicated to the human resources team, and that’s where recruiters help bridge the gap between job hunters and hiring companies. Unlike HR staff that works for the main company, a recruiter from outside agencies receives free from the hiring employers.

Regardless, working as a recruiter in Yokohama follows a similar pattern to working in HR. Individuals should have a wide range of practical skills like computer literacy and Japanese proficiency in personal skills such as communication and analytical skill. However, there are some perks when it comes to working as a recruiter. For one, agencies or companies can offer you financial bonuses if you’ve reached a certain target. There is also a clear career path in both the HR and recruitment industry.

Marketing encompasses a broad range of positions with distinguishable skill sets, but that simply means there are more options available for passionate individuals who want to pursue a marketing career in Japan. Generally, marketing jobs call for skills in data analytics, creative media and editorial, and strategy planning.

In recent years, companies are also looking for digital marketing experts and creative individuals, so showcasing your hard skills in graphic design and video editing, as well as your portfolio, can boost your application. Another branch of marketing is Customer Relationship Management, where your task includes analyzing data on your consumer base and creating marketing strategies appropriate to that. Ultimately, marketing isn't an individual job. You will be working in a team, meeting clients, and doing a lot of consultations, so strong communication and negotiation skills are preferable.

Many companies are planning to expand their business to the global market, and they are also aware of the number of foreign consumers in Japan. This creates a great demand for marketing professionals in Japan, so it is no surprise that marketing jobs have one of the most competitive salaries.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

The state of tourism and hospitality 2024

Tourism and hospitality are on a journey of disruption. Shifting source markets and destinations, growing demand for experiential and luxury travel, and innovative business strategies are all combining to dramatically alter the industry landscape. Given this momentous change, it’s important for stakeholders to consider and strategize on four major themes:

  • The bulk of travel is close to home. Although international travel might draw headlines, stakeholders shouldn’t neglect the big opportunities in their backyards. Domestic travel still represents the bulk of travel spending, and intraregional tourism is on the rise.
  • Consumers increasingly prioritize travel—when it’s on their own terms. Interest in travel is booming, but travelers are no longer content with a one-size-fits-all experience. Individual personalization might not always be practical, but savvy industry players can use segmentation and hypothesis-driven testing to improve their value propositions. Those that fail to articulate target customer segments and adapt their offerings accordingly risk getting left behind.
  • The face of luxury travel is changing. Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than any other travel segment today—particularly in Asia. It’s crucial to understand that luxury travelers don’t make up a monolith. Segmenting by age, nationality, and net worth can reveal varied and evolving preferences and behaviors.
  • As tourism grows, destinations will need to prepare to mitigate overcrowding. Destinations need to be ready to handle the large tourist flows of tomorrow. Now is the time for stakeholders to plan, develop, and invest in mitigation strategies. Equipped with accurate assessments of carrying capacities and enhanced abilities to gather and analyze data, destinations can improve their transportation and infrastructure, build tourism-ready workforces, and preserve their natural and cultural heritages.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

Global travel is back and buzzing. The amount of travel fell by 75 percent in 2020; however, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. More regional trips, an emerging population of new travelers, and a fresh set of destinations are powering steady spending in tourism.

There’s no doubt that people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go?

We share a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030.

The way we travel now

Which trends are shaping traveler sentiment now? What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? How much are they willing to spend on their trips? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

To gauge what’s on the minds of present-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them. The findings reveal disparate desires, generational divides, and a newly emerging set of traveler archetypes.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other segment. This growth is being powered in part by a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options. The increase is also a result of rising wealth levels in Asia.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers around the globe about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Some widely held notions about luxury travelers—such as how much money they have, how old they are, and where they come from—could be due for reexamination.

Destination readiness: Preparing for the tourist flows of tomorrow

As global tourism grows, it will be crucial for destinations to be ready. How can the tourism ecosystem prepare to host unprecedented volumes of visitors while managing the challenges that can accompany this success? A large flow of tourists, if not carefully channeled, can encumber infrastructure, harm natural and cultural attractions, and frustrate locals and visitors alike.

Now is the time for tourism stakeholders to combine their thinking and resources to look for better ways to handle the visitor flows of today while properly preparing themselves for the visitor flows of tomorrow. We offer a diagnostic that destinations can use to spot early-warning signs about tourism concentration, along with suggestions for funding mechanisms and strategies to help maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.

Six trends shaping new business models in tourism and hospitality

As destinations and source markets have transformed over the past decade, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved, too. Accommodation, home sharing, cruises, and theme parks are among the sectors in which new approaches could present new opportunities. Unbundling offerings, cross-selling distinctive experiences, and embracing data-powered strategies can all be winning moves. A series of insight-driven charts reveal significant trends and an outlook on the future.
