Where to find cheap all-inclusive hotels

There are cheap all-inclusive hotels around all corners of the world, including in the U.S., Africa, Europe and Asia, but the vast majority of them are in Mexico and the Caribbean. And just because an all-inclusive resort is affordable doesn't mean it is subpar. You'll be surprised to find many of the resorts listed here feel quite luxurious.

Mexico's most popular beach destinations, including Cancun , Tulum, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, are filled with affordable all-inclusive resorts for all types of travelers — some are geared toward families, others are adults-only. Spain is also home to a number of affordable all-inclusive resorts. These can be found along the Costa del Sol and even on the famed party island of Ibiza.

What is an 'affordable' all-inclusive rate?

Rates vary with all-inclusive resorts and are usually set by season and demand. For this guide, we define affordable all-inclusive rates as roughly less than $300 per night. Expect these rates to be slightly higher in traditional bucket-list destinations — like going on a safari in Kenya or diving in the Maldives. And while you may pay more per night for these properties, they are still affordable compared to other resorts in the region. Many are also inclusive of everything. So, on that safari, you'll not only have all your meals and drinks included but also twice daily game drives.

When trying to determine a reasonable price for an all-inclusive vacation, consider if everything is truly included or if you will need to spend money on extras. For instance, if you are heading to Mexico and don't want to sit around by the pool or beach all day, will you be spending money on excursions or rental cars? Because that will certainly add up. If this is the case, then the resort that includes all activities may be cheaper.

The best way to get a good price for an all-inclusive resort is to avoid travel during holidays when rates will be highest. If you are planning a short trip and have flexible vacation days (or work remotely), try booking during the week, when rates are usually lower (airfares can be lower as well).

Basecamp Masai Mara is an affordable, all-inclusive safari resort in Kenya's famed Masai Mara National Reserve, home to the annual wildlife migration. It offers a classic Kenyan safari experience at a rate that won't break the bank. The property is also eco-friendly; its camps are lit, and water is heated by solar power.

The camp is on the Talek River in a tropical forest setting and just across a footbridge from the reserve. The reserve is home to all of Africa's big game animals, and it's where you'll do your twice daily included game drives. Basecamp caters to families and couples alike. If you are traveling with kids, the Young Explorers Club offers educational activities, like bush survival skill classes, for young ones during the parts of the day you aren't on safari.

You'll stay in one of 17 riverside canvas tents. These are permanent structures, and while they aren't ultra-fancy, they are very comfortable with proper beds and are decorated with colorful fabrics. President Barack Obama and his family stayed at Basecamp when he was a senator, and the tent where he stayed is even bookable. There is also a family tent with two wings, each featuring a double bed and a shared bathroom area in the middle.

What makes Basecamp truly special, however, is the quality of its guides. The company employs the Maasai people, whose land they also lease. Not only will you get to experience the "big five" animals (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros), but you'll also have a chance to learn about the Maasai culture. Dinners are communal affairs, where discussion with guides and other guests quickly becomes a highlight.

Rates at Basecamp Masai Mara , which start at $365 per night, are per person based on double occupancy and include all meals, airstrip transfers, shared game drives and Masai Mara park fees. Children 3-12 sharing a tent with adults pay 50% of the full rate.

When most people think of the Maldives, they think of overwater bungalows that cost thousands of dollars per night — not a vacation that mere mortals can afford. But Reethi Beach Resort offers an all-inclusive private island experience that won't break the bank.

Here, you can even stay in an overwater bungalow. It's not as luxe as the overwater bungalows at the resorts frequented by the 1%. Still, they sit on stilts over the Indian Ocean, offering direct access to the fish-filled lagoon below. Plus, no one can charge for the brilliant turquoise water and white sugar sand beaches that are the real stars of a Maldives holiday, and in this department, Reethi Beach Resort competes with the best of the best.

The property is in the Baa Atoll, part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at Hanifaru Bay. The reserve is home to manta rays, whale sharks and nurse sharks, among other marine life. Excursions to snorkel with them can be organized for an extra fee. There is also excellent diving in the area.

Reethi Beach offers a mix of overwater, ocean and garden-view bungalows. If you want to save your pennies for underwater excursions, which are truly worth the cost, then opt for one of the beach or garden bungalows. Their interiors offer the same style of decor and comfort level. Plus, you'll still have access to the same stunning lagoon but at a lower price point.

All-inclusive rates at Reethi Beach Resort start from $194 per night and include all meals and some beverages.

If you have always dreamed of honeymooning in the Maldives, Robinson Maldives is an affordable resort option. An adults-only property on a private island in a very remote location, it has a marooned-at-sea ambience that matches its name. If you are planning a destination wedding, the resort also hosts these.

There are a range of spacious villas here, including overwater options. Economy bungalows are the least expensive room type and offer garden views (rather than water views). However, they are still comfy and perfect if you care less about where you sleep and more about affording a Maldives vacation. The decor is the same regardless of whether you are in an overwater or economy bungalow.

There are also two on-site restaurants and three bars. The resort has a house reef you can swim to, and snorkeling equipment is included in the nightly rate. Note that guests will pay extra to dive, do a boat snorkeling trip, windsurf or stand-up paddleboard.

Rates at Robinson Maldives begin at $461 per night and include all meals and some drinks.

Spice Hotel & Spa is in one of Antalya's newer developments on Turkey's stunning Turquoise Coast. It's a sprawling, 500-plus room, all-inclusive property on the beach in Belek. Despite its good value price-point, Spice Hotel has a luxe feel. The public spaces are impressive with a gold pillared and peacock feather-decorated lobby, gold-mirrored elevator doors and lounges decorated in rich-hued fabrics.

Moroccan-style decor prevails around the property, and the best rooms and suites have an opulent look and Mediterranean views from furnished balconies. If you want to splurge, opt for a villa. These are lavishly styled and in their own VIP section within the resort. But note that even the cheapest rooms still have private terraces and contemporary decor.

This resort is a top choice if you are looking for a lively vibe. Attractive to families and couples (honeymoon suites have whirlpool tubs), it hosts nightly entertainment and weekly Champagne pool parties at the huge lagoon-style swimming pool, featuring costumed dancers and other performers.

The beach here is a wide sandy affair, with a mix of sun-loungers and cabanas for guests. If you are traveling with children, there is a kids club, water park pool, bowling and video game stations.

Spa Ice has an extra charge but offers a full range of treatments as well as a Turkish bath, steam room and sauna. The resort has a few different dining options, including buffet and a la carte choices.

Rates at Spice Hotel & Spa start at $116 per night based on double occupancy and include food and most beverages.

Set on a beautiful stretch of beach between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, this oceanside resort caters to all types of travelers — including those with small dogs. Unlike many all-inclusive resorts, Dreams is pet-friendly (with an extra fee and size restrictions). Families can look forward to numerous pools and a kids club, too.

Well-appointed rooms and suites at this Mexican hacienda-style resort underwent a recent renovation and feature distinct, octagonal shapes throughout the design. There are many different room types, but booking the Preferred Club level offers extra amenities, such as premium alcohol included in your daily rate.

The property has a whopping nine on-site restaurants with a mix of buffet and a la carte selections. Restaurants span the globe cuisine-wise. Options range from upscale French restaurant Bordeaux to an Asian-inspired eatery and, of course, a modern Mexican restaurant.

Rates at Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa start at $374 or 29,000 World of Hyatt points and are based on double occupancy and include all food and top-shelf alcoholic beverages.

all inclusive trips for $1000

On Bai Dai Beach, just south of the popular Vietnamese resort city of Nha Trang, Swandor Resort Cam Ranh offers an affordable and comfortable all-inclusive beach vacation in a bucket-list destination. The beach here is beautiful, with soft sand and clear, warm turquoise water.

The five different room categories vary when it comes to size and views, but even the cheapest rooms have at least partial sea views and contemporary decor. The deluxe family-front sea-view rooms have a wall of windows looking out directly onto the ocean.

The property is very family-friendly; there is a kids club with supervised activities, a large playground and the Puppy Restaurant, which has a kid-focused menu. Other amenities include multiple pools and, for adults, the Xone Night Club. Choose from three restaurants, including one focused on seafood. There are also three bars and poolside snacks.

Rates at Swandor Resort Cam Ranh start at $120 per night and include all food, beverages and some activities.

On Cozumel, the island just off the shore of Cancun in the Mexican Caribbean, Fiesta Americana is a great choice for families looking for an affordable all-inclusive resort experience. The on-site Fiesta Kids Club runs all sorts of activities for younger travelers; it has crafts, video games and a special lunch service for children.

One guided snorkeling trip is included in the nightly rate. There is also a private beach club and two swimming pools to lounge around — ideal spots to sip all the included tropical drinks.

The rooms and suites all have at least partial Caribbean Sea views from furnished balconies or terraces. The best views are found on the higher floors, naturally. There are also large, modern family suites, perfect for spreading out with the kiddos. Guests can choose between Mexican fare at El Mexicano, Asian cuisine at Peninsula or Italian dishes at Rosoto.

Rates at Fiesta Americana Cozumel All Inclusive start at $212 per night, based on double occupancy, and include food, beverages and some activities.

If you are visiting Ibiza for something other than the party scene , you'll love Barcelo Portinatx. The adults-only property sits at the northernmost tip of the island, and the vibe is way more zen than the club-centric nightlife for which this island is widely known. The location is beautiful; it's just steps from a cove with a small beach, where the resort has a beach club for guests.

The all-white resort has a boho chic-meets-modern minimalist style throughout. The rooms have a neutral color tone and elegant decor. All feature rainfall showers, designer bath amenities and sun loungers on a large balcony. The best room types come with whirlpool tubs or outdoor showers.

You'll have four dining choices: a main restaurant, the beach club, the lobby bar and the pool bar. There are also two swimming pools and complimentary hatha yoga classes each morning.

Rates at Barcelo Portinatx start at $121 and include meals and drinks.

If you are looking for an affordable all-inclusive with a plethora of amenities on Spain's Costa del Sol, Iberostar Royal Andalus delivers. Set above the sand dunes overlooking Barrosa Beach in Cadiz, it is also a top choice for golfers with two par 72 courses within walking distance — or you can take a free shuttle.

The rooms and suites are spacious, although some look a bit dated. Still, for the price point, they are comfortable and put you close to the stunning beach. If you want something a bit more upscale than the base-level rooms, book one of the suites; these have newer furnishings, more vibrant artwork and in-room Nespresso machines. Some also feature whirlpool tubs. Families should consider the adjoined suite options, with separate living spaces and sofa beds.

There are multiple restaurants on-site, so you won't go hungry here. There are also two swimming pools, a seasonal kids club, a water park and a beach club with included activities.

Rates at Iberostar Royal Andalus start at $64 and include meals, beverages and some activities.

Sandpiper Bay Resort is finishing a major resort-wide renovation as it transforms from what was once a Club Med into a Trademark Collection by Wyndham property. One of the few true all-inclusive resorts in the U.S., it's on Florida's beautiful Treasure Coast.

The resort has both beach and river access and is geared toward families, as seen in the two separate kids clubs. (There is one for children between the ages of 4 and 10 years and another for tweens and teens, each with age-appropriate programming.)

Activities like stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are included in the nightly rate. There are also tennis and pickleball courts, minigolf courses and basketball courts, ideal for family games. Other amenities include several different dining options and a spa.

Rooms and suites come in a handful of tiers and layouts, but all feature bright colors and modern decor. The family suite option has two bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with two twins, as well as a daybed.

Rates at Sandpiper Bay Resort start at $422 per night.

About two hours south of Panama City on the Gulf of Panama, this luxury property offers a good value price-point on Playa Blanca beach. This makes it one of the best choices for anyone seeking a traditional, large-scale, all-inclusive resort experience with plenty to entertain guests.

It caters to families, friends and couples alike. There is a large kids club with organized activities split by age group (4-7 years and 8-12 years). Guests can use kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, body boards and snorkeling equipment free of charge. There is also a nearby golf course for guest use.

Besides the beach and included activities, there are four swimming pools, including one with a swim-up bar and another dedicated to children. There is also daily activity programming. Nighttime entertainment includes a discotheque open six nights a week and nightly live shows around the resort.

Opened in 2021, MarBella Elix sits on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea and a beautiful beach in the far north of Greece with views of Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos. Despite its luxe vibe, this all-inclusive still has a shockingly affordable price point.

The design is modern beach chic with lots of floor-to-ceiling glass windows as well as a lobby featuring a live tree and bright patterned pillows on rich leather couches. Rooms and suites have woven wood headboards behind beds draped in high-quality linens.

There are multiple dining options, including a large Greek and Mediterranean buffet and a creative Greek fine-dining restaurant. At the pool, guests can grab light meals at the Italian Indigo Pool Restaurant while Azure dishes out burgers, pizza and salads on the beach.

If you are traveling with the kids, the Grasshoppers Mini Club — unlike most kids clubs — accepts children as young as 4 months and up to 12 years. It provides a range of age-focused activities.

Rates at MarBella Elix start at $115 per night.

Offering all-inclusive packages, Grotto Bay is a good choice if you are looking for a smaller resort experience on a beautiful pink sand beach. Set on 21 acres of lush tropical grounds that include dramatic caves and direct access to the clear turquoise water beach at Bailey's Bay, it has 201 rooms and 11 colorful cottages.

There is plenty to do at this property, although not all excursions are included. You can use stand-up paddleboards and kayaks for free. You can also play tennis, and pay for excursions like fishing charters, wreck diving and reef snorkeling tours.

Rooms and suites come in several layouts and are on the smaller side, averaging around 350 square feet. Each features some type of ocean view and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto a furnished balcony. If you want to be right on the water, book the oceanfront rooms. Ocean-view rooms are set on a ridge top and offer water views from a distance.

There are three on-site restaurants as well as two bars.

Rates at Grotto Bay Beach Resort & Spa start at $262 per night, and all-inclusive rates include three meals, unlimited beverages, food and beverage gratuities, public transportation and use of kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel.

The Hilton Tulum All-Inclusive Riviera Maya Resort was the brand's first all-inclusive foray into this part of Mexico, opening in 2022. Set right on the beach, Hilton Tulum has a luxe, contemporary ambience. There are 735 rooms and suites, but despite the size, the property does not feel crowded.

Accommodations are designed with locally sourced materials that match the surrounding environment; they're styled with a neutral color pattern. All rooms have private balconies with either landscape or ocean views. The suites add separate living and dining space and even larger balconies. You can book the "Enclave" club level for elevated room amenities, a private pool area and a lounge with snacks and beverages. Because this is already an all-inclusive resort, this is not necessarily worth the extra cost.

If you are traveling with the family, there is a kids club with organized activities and a splash pool water park playground. Teens also have a club with a movie room, video games and pool tables.

There are nine resort pools in total, and if you are traveling as a couple or with friends, there is an adults-only pool as well. Other amenities include five signature restaurants as well as bars and lounges. There also is a fitness center with a yoga studio and spin room.

Rates at Hilton Tulum All-Inclusive Riviera Maya Resort start at $234 or 81,000 Hilton Honors points and include meals, most beverages and some activities.

If you want to sleep in an overwater bungalow in the Caribbean, head to Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort in Jamaica. The luxury all-inclusive is an adults-only property that caters almost exclusively to couples. Designed to pay homage to refined British style, it has a Georgian-style Great House, roaming peacocks on its manicured grounds and offers afternoon tea service.

The overwater bungalows are the most luxe of the multiple accommodation tiers. These are set on the resort's private island, so they offer an even more exclusive experience. The villas come with glass panels on the floors that let you check out the underwater world beneath. They also have outdoor soaking tubs and double hammocks on their balconies.

If the overwater bungalow is out of your price range, don't worry: The other rooms are still romantic and swanky. Guests also have access to 20 restaurants at this Sandals and two others in the area, including a Thai restaurant on the private island open to all guests.

One of the best parts about staying at a Sandals property is that rates are truly all-inclusive. Motorized water sports and even scuba diving are included in your nightly rate, so you won't need to spend anything on activities.

Rates at Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort start at $387 per night.

Know Before You Go

Research peak and low seasons, and be flexible with your dates..

Like most hotels, all-inclusive resorts offer nightly rates that fluctuate seasonally. Peak season varies by destination, but for the most part, the winter holidays and spring break tend to be the most expensive times of the year. To save even more money, consider traveling during shoulder season. Play around with dates to figure out if arriving and departing one or two nights earlier (or later) affects the cost.

Have a thorough understanding of what is included in the nightly rate.

“All-inclusive” doesn’t always mean every meal, drink, and activity is included in your package. Common exclusions include premium alcohol, spa treatments, and off-site excursions. Before you book, thoroughly research what the nightly rate covers — and don’t forget to read the hotel’s terms and conditions. Once you've arrived, feel empowered to ask the on-site team questions. Every resort is different, and many offer tiered packages that outline included services and amenities.

Keep in mind seasonal weather conditions.

A large number of the all-inclusive resorts on this list are located in areas that experience hurricane season. Before you confirm your trip, think about getting travel insurance, and always read the hotel’s fine print. Some all-inclusive properties have strict cancellation policies, and you want to avoid any situation where the weather causes you to lose your trip and travel funds.

These days, it’s almost impossible to find a vacation to a tropical destination that includes airfare and lodging for less than $500 per person. Almost. Those who know where and how to look, however, can easily end up on a sunny beach, or sipping mai tais at the bar of an all-inclusive resort, without having handed over five Benjamin Franklins for the whole experience. Need a bit of guidance getting there? Below are four all-inclusive tropical vacations—plus four bonus budget beach destinations—including airfare for under $500 per person.

Editor’s Note: The airfares, hotel rates, and vacation package prices in this story are sample prices only, and may vary depending on your specific travel dates.

The Best Destinations for All-Inclusive Vacations Under $500

All-inclusive resorts and packages allow guests to take care of all food and lodging expenses upfront, meaning they can relax on vacation without fear of unexpected costs cropping up during their trip. These four destinations offer travelers a chance to book an all-inclusive vacation and roundtrip airfare for under $500.

The Dominican Republic

Beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic at sunset

The beaches of the Dominican Republic are as beautiful as any in the Caribbean, and round-trip flights to the island can cost as little as $180 from Chicago or Miami. Choice Hotels’ Ascend collection includes two all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic with incredibly low nightly rates: Travel during the off seasons—spring and fall—and you can nab a stay at Emotions by Hodelpa Juan Dolio for as little as $100 per night, or at Emotions by Hodelpa Puerto Plata from $97 per night.

Both are beachfront properties with a variety of restaurants, as well as outdoor pools, in-room fridges, microwaves, an on-site fitness center, and a location that’s within easy distance from the airport and major attractions. Members of the Choice Privileges Rewards Program also earn points by staying at either resort.

Pick the right dates, book a few nights, and do the math, and you’ll have gotten yourself a Caribbean vacation that includes airfare, hotel, food, and beverages (yes, even the alcoholic kind) for under $500.

8 Best Travel Package Sites for Booking a Cheap Vacation

Beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica

For travelers willing to travel in the off-season—between mid-April and mid-December—a four night stay at the beachfront Royal Decameron , an all-inclusive property on Montego Bay’s lively strip, and roundtrip airfare can cost as little $474 when booked as a package through CheapCaribbean.com .

The Royal Decameron is within easy walking distance of the city’s best hot spots, shops, and restaurants, though all your food is already taken care of on-site. To stick to your budget, you can also stick to admission-free attractions in Jamaica—including Negril Cliffs and Castleton Gardens —and use local buses and taxis instead of renting a car.

The Bahamas

Cruise ship in Nassau, Bahamas on a sunny day

While not a classic all-inclusive resort vacation, you’ll certainly find everything you need on board a cruise ship to the Bahamas. And if you’re setting sail from Florida, you can, without too much effort, find a four-night cruise for about the cost of a single hotel night in any major American city.

A quick Expedia search brings up plenty of three- and four-night sailings from Florida that start under $300 per person, while Cruises.com offers a similar list . Cruise prices typically include all the food you can eat, live entertainment, and calls at ports such as Nassau, Freeport, and, often, private islands belonging to that cruise line. We even found a 4-night cruise departing from Miami going to the Bahamas for $169 per person!

Playa del Carmen at sunset

Roundtrip flights to Cancún from southeastern airports like Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and Miami can be found for as little as $183. You’ll find the best deals during off-season, mid-summer through autumn, and fares tend to be cheaper for travel on weekdays than weekends.

Riu Hotels & Resorts operates a series of all-inclusive resorts in Cancún, including the HOTEL RIU DUNAMAR 5* which has rooms available for as little as $137 per night. For those who would rather bundle their airfare and hotel, CheapCaribbean.com offers deals on several all-inclusive vacation packages with airfare that will get you to Cancún for under $500. This vacation package to Riviera Maya   includes three nights at the  Bahia Principe Grand Coba , a 5-star hotel right by popular Playa Del Carmen complete with spa, casino, and beach access.

Do I Need a Passport to Go to Mexico?

Other Top Spots for a Budget Vacation

If all-inclusive resorts aren’t your style, there are still plenty of other cheap tropical vacation spots to explore.  While additional expenses like food and excursions won’t be covered, you can still find round-trip airfare and lodging for under $500 at these destinations.

Puerto Rico

Coastline of San Juan, Puerto Rico

You can often find round-trip flights from Miami to San Juan for around $100—with some weekday options as low as $75—and flights from other parts of the east coast are usually under $200 thanks to budget airlines like Spirit.

Vacation rentals are the most affordable option for accommodations and you can find several cheap options that are right by the beach – like this two-bedroom condo that costs just $89 per night or this spacious studio with spa tub and patio for just $99 per night.

Stretch your budget even further by spending your days lounging on the gorgeous beaches around the island, all of which are free and open to the public, or seeking out fun free experiences in the capital city of San Juan, like the University of Puerto Rico’s Botanical Garden .

Oahu, Hawaii

Aerial view of Honolulu on Oahu, Hawaii

Budget airlines like Southwest and Alaskan have made trips to Hawaii affordable. Several times a year, these airlines have sales that bring flights to Hawaii down to less than $300.  (Airfare sites such as Airfarewatchdog , SmarterTravel’s sister site, will alert you when fares drop .)

If you’re lucky enough to snag one of these low fares to Honolulu—or if you’re the lucky owner of a Southwest Companion Pass , which is actually fairly easy to get if you keep an eye out for associated credit card offers—Oahu has worthwhile low-budget lodgings that could help keep your tropical vacation total under $500. Vacation rentals will once again give you the best bang for your buck, with many highly rated options on Vrbo listed at less than $100 per night.

Once you’re there, Honolulu doesn’t have to be expensive since the city has plenty of cheap street food and affordable restaurants—Moose McGillycuddy’s is a favorite for low-cost breakfasts—and bus transportation is easy and much less expensive than renting a car. Plus, many of Oahu’s most worthwhile attractions are free or open for a nominal fee, including hiking up Diamond Head ($5 for entry, $10 to park a vehicle in the lot), paying tribute at Pearl Harbor’s USS Arizona (free), and sunbathing on Waikiki Beach (free).

The Best All-Inclusive Resorts in the United States

Aerial view of Miami Beach

Americans looking to keep their tropical vacations under $500 don’t actually have to leave the contiguous part of their continent to laze on the beach while shaded by palm trees. Orbitz’s list of vacation package deals under $499 usually offers some worthwhile all-inclusive deals to Orlando. Likewise, Travelocity has a dedicated Flight + Hotel Deals Under $400 page that includes various packages to Miami and Orlando, with stays at properties like the Westgate Vacation Villa Resort and the Boulan South Beach.

If you’d rather book airfare and lodging separately, check out Expedia’s round-trip fares to Orlando for less than $100. Couple that with affordable lodgings, like the family-friendly Coco Key Hotel and Waterpark Resort —just $132 for a room that sleeps four and only $19 more for a King Suite—and you’ve got yourself a memorable tropical trip with the kids that won’t break the bank.

Tips for Finding All-Inclusive Vacations with Airfare Under $500

Wherever you choose to book your affordable tropical vacation, one key strategy to keeping it under $500 is to understand what average prices look like for where you want to go—and to be ready to buy the minute you see fares that are listed well below that.

“If you’ve been watching for a good fare and you find one, don’t hesitate,” says Jeff Klee, the CEO of CheapAir . “When you go away for a few days or hours to consult with friends, or just continue to shop around, you may be surprised to find that the fare has disappeared while you mulled it over.”

One other tip for keeping vacations under $500, from Klee: “Flexibility is your friend. Unless your trip is for an event tied to a specific set of dates, often just shifting your search dates by a few days can offer big savings. Remember that mid-week flights—Tuesdays and Wednesdays—are usually a much better value than those on the weekend.”

8 Week-Long All-Inclusive Vacations for $2,000 or Less

author image

See recent posts by Alisha Prakash

Winter blues already got you down? You’re not alone. December, January, and February can be cold and stressful, plus it can leave you with slim wallet after all that holiday shopping . It’s also when the lure of an all-inclusive vacation is at its highest, given that it checks all the right boxes: warm, sunny, and a no-hassle vibe thanks to the pay-one-price plan. However, during this time, flight prices and resort rates soar. Well, we’ve got great news. We’ve done all the legwork for you and found eight, week-long all-inclusive getaways for two that add up to $2,000 or less. Yes, right in prime season.

Editor’s Note: The airfares listed below are for round-trip flights (we stuck to major airports). All hotel rates are for double occupancy for six nights and include food, drinks, and activities (though upgrades may cost extra). Prices are accurate at the time of publishing, but are subject to change.

1. Majestic Elegance Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Aerial Photography at the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana

Aerial Photography of the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana/Oyster

Nestled right up against Playa Bavaro, the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana ticks all the right boxes for a solid all-inclusive stay. The all-inclusive rate covers almost everything: seven restaurants, room service, drinks at 11 bars, in-room minibars, and activities and events like foam parties and poolside games. There’s also a beautiful spa at the next-door sister property (that’ll cost you extra). The decor is a little dated, but you can’t beat the price. All suites have free Wi-Fi, hot tubs, and private terraces.

When to Go: December

Average Hotel Rate: $186/night

Flights to Punta Cana: From Miami, nonstop flights can be found for $335 on select dates. More options with one stop can be had for up to $437. If you’re departing from New York City, flights in the second week of December range from $387 to $437, but you’ll need to fly before the primetime Christmas holiday rush.

2. Occidental Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Aerial View of Occidental Punta Cana

Aerial View of the Occidental Punta Cana/Oyster

Occidental Punta Cana is a mid-range all-inclusive with a beautiful location on Playa Bavaro. The rooms here are spacious and modern, but simple. You’ll have to pay for Wi-Fi unless you’re a Royal Level guest, but you’ll still get rainfall showers, air-conditioning, and balconies. This is a lively property with music, socializing, and drinking, though it’s also a family-friendly spot that doesn’t get too out of hand. The major draw is the big beach out back, and non-motorized water sports, food, drinks, and nightly entertainment sweeten the deal. There’s also an on-site kids’ club.

When to Go: February

Flights to Punta Cana: Nonstop flights from Miami start at $267, and options with one stop start at $250. Meanwhile, nonstop flights from NYC start at $357 on select dates in February, but you’ll find more affordable prices if you are willing to make one stop. Folks from Los Angeles have intermittent options, with a scattering of one-stop flights starting at $374 round-trip (there are no nonstops available).

3. Temptation Cancun Resort, Mexico

The Sexy Pool at Temptation Cancun Resort

The Sexy Pool at Temptation Cancun Resort/Oyster

This winter, heat things up at the topless-optional Temptation Cancun Resort . The adults-only resort has excellent restaurants, top-shelf liquor, and a beautiful beachfront location. You’ll also get daily activities in the main pool, nightly themed parties, and a fun, welcoming vibe throughout. Rooms are spacious, but minimal, and come with stocked minibars, room service, and butler service (some have terrace hot tubs).

When to Go: December and January, excluding dates around the holidays

Average Hotel Rate: $200/night

Flights to Cancun: Most nonstop flights from Miami stay under $350 round-trip, with options starting at $252 in December and $254 in January. If you’re coming from NYC, be sure to time your dates right in order to take advantage of the nonstop flight options under $400. If you need more date availability, consider the one-stop flight options that start at $349 round-trip. Flights from Washington, D.C. clock in between $313 and $384 for almost all dates in January, though December travel options are limited to the first week of the month.

4. Grand Bahia Principe Coba, Akumal

The Premier Pool at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba

The Premier Pool at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba/Oyster

The 1,080-room Grand Bahia Principe Coba is flush with features, including several restaurants and bars, a dedicated beach area (with a beach bar), kids’ clubs, daily activities, and nightly entertainment. For an extra fee, guests can enjoy golfing, a shopping mall, a casino, treatments and a hydrotherapy circuit at the spa, and water-based activities. The downside? This property is not on the beach, though shuttles are available, and you only get to use the free water sports for one hour per day.

When to Go: January

Average Hotel Rate: $198/night

Flights to Cancun: In January, most nonstop flights from Miami start at $254. If you’re traveling from NYC, some nonstop flights come in at under $400, though there are cheaper options with one stop. Flights from Washington, D.C. clock in between $313 and $384 for almost all dates in January.

5. Mia Reef Isla Mujeres

The Deluxe Ocean View Room with Two Queen Beds at the Mia Reef Isla Mujeres

The Deluxe Ocean-View Room at the Mia Reef Isla Mujeres/Oyster

Staying at Mia Reef takes a little more effort since it’s out on Isla Mujeres (a quick ferry ride from Cancun). However, staying on a private island with beautiful ocean views and a shallow, private beach make it well worth the extra trek. This upscale all-inclusive boasts easy-to-navigate grounds and just 156 rooms, all with contemporary decor, free minibars, and ocean vistas. Some rooms even have personal kitchenettes, kayaks, and snorkeling equipment. Guests can also expect two snack bars, a speciality restaurant, a buffet, and three bars (top-shelf booze is extra). The all-inclusive offerings are rounded out with nightly events, a kids’ club, and a unique natural rock pool.

When to Go: December, January, and February

This luxury resort is a solid pick for folks looking for a little R&R. The Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort in Curacao has a secluded location, tons of natural beauty, and relaxing ocean views. There are five restaurants (plus pop-up eateries in the lobby), a golf course, tennis courts, a day spa, and three pools overlooking the ocean. The all-inclusive plan here is optional, though most people are on it because of the resort’s relative distance from town. When to Go: January and February

5 Best Vacations for Less Than $1K

Budgeting day-to-day expenses is tough enough. What isn't soaked into the mortgage and rent is swallowed by groceries and gas. Vacation -- what vacation? Try "staycation," a word that finally made it to Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 2009, partly to make us feel better about our lack of mobility.

But maybe it's really just imagination that we're all lacking. With that, proper planning and careful calculation it is possible to travel within reasonable means. Imagine that you and a companion have a vacation allowance of just $1,000 for seven days and six to seven nights. There are places to visit and experiences to gain that might seem to defy that budget, but won't. Don't factor in airfare -- we'll provide tips to save on transportation here -- instead, devote your creativity to using the "grand" you've got during the trip itself. Have you pictured where you'll go yet?

We have a handful of vacations that will help you get your wanderlust going. Take our challenge to spend a cheap week on one of these fantastic trips.

[See a photo recap of the 5 Best Vacations for Less Than $1K ]

If you're seeking sun and sand when everyone else is shivering in stiff breezes and snow, try an often-overlooked (but still beautiful) island in the Caribbean Sea. The Belizean isle of Ambergris Caye is a renowned scuba diving locale, and yet it doesn't get as much hype as the Cayman Islands . English is the official language, so don't worry about a communication barrier. And for you all you Madonna fans, Ambergris is the original La Isla Bonita .

Getting Around: Ambergris Caye is so laid-back and compact that you could successfully shuttle around the main settlement, San Pedro Town, in a rented golf cart. Rent a four-seater cart on an as-needed basis -- you probably can get by with having it for just an hour each day, which costs as little as $18 USD, including insurance and taxes. Visit the island's tourism board site for rental information. Besides that, you can resort to walking or biking. Some hotels offer complimentary bicycles for their guests.

Where to Stay: Forgo the pampering of a resort for the personal service found at an independently run hotel. The New York Times and Frommer's recommend Ruby's Beachfront . Located on Front Street in San Pedro Town, this hideaway has 23 small, clean and comfortable rooms that regularly go for far less than $50 USD a night.

Where to Dine: Palmilla Restaurant , in the Victoria House hotel, is generally considered the best and most elegant dining experience on the island. So it almost goes without saying that travelers on a shoestring budget should steer clear. Luckily, there are quite a few affordable restaurants on the island. Try the Jambel Jerk Pit in the town center for some spicy regional dishes, or head to Fido's on the beachfront for a burger and some cheap Belkins, the national beer.

Your Big Splurge: Visiting the Belize Barrier Reef -- which is second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef in size -- will definitely be the budget-slayer for this trip. According to Ambergris Caye's tourism site , you should expect to pay between $45 and $55 USD per person for an excursion that includes two daytime dives, and no more than $40 for a night dive.

Avoid the snow bunnies and store your skis until this season. Many ski resorts don't experience a traditional spring, so while the rest of the country is welcoming the first thaw in March and April, a place like Mammoth Lakes in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains continues to embrace the spoils of winter. The town's nearby resort, The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area , has more than 3,500 acres of skiable terrain that also includes the less-visited June Mountain resort .

Getting Around: Mammoth Lakes' bus and trolley systems make stops throughout town, as well as deliver passengers to and from the slopes. And best of all, they're free to ride. If you want door-to-door service, you can use the city's Dial-A-Ride bus, but it will cost you between $2.50 and $3.50 per ride. Visit the tourism board's website for more information.

Where to Stay: Go the route of a vacation rental. You could hole up in one of the area's condos for as little as $150 a night and often a week-long stay means even further discounts. Sites like HomeAway.com advertise condos available for between $600 and $700 if you stay the whole week.

Where to Dine: Who needs an après-ski lifestyle when you're trying to save a buck? If you rent a condo you'll have a kitchen, so you could be extra frugal by visiting the local supermarket for groceries. And while on the slopes you should hail one of the two Roving Mammoth food carts -- ahem, snowcats -- that sell cheap but tasty burritos or calzones. Track the cats down on Twitter .

Your Big Splurge: Leave the most wiggle room in your budget for skiing and snowboarding. And keep in mind that you stand a greater chance for a discount if you hit June Mountain instead of Mammoth Mountain. The former's lift tickets cost around $65 a day, with discounts for multiple days.

You can visit the beaches of the United States on one of summer's long weekends; save your vacation days to go farther away and explore what another country and culture has to offer. Some U.S. travelers mistake Lisbon 's bargain-basement prices as an assessment of its quality. Not true. Portugal's capital is crawling with unforgettable architecture and magnificent food. And in summer you can truly relish the nearby beaches like Praia da Rainha or Praia da Conceição, located west of the city in Cascais .

Getting Around: You can't beat free, which is how much it costs to put one foot in front the other while exploring Lisbon. To avoid huffing and puffing on the city's hilly terrain, take a bus, tram or funicular. One-way rides cost no more than $5 USD per person. Or buy a Lisboa Card for up to three days of unlimited rides on public transport -- plus complimentary admission to some of the popular attractions -- for €33 EUR, or $45 USD. Visit the city's public transport site for more information.

Where to Stay: Lisbon contains some boutique hostels where you won't sacrifice a comfy bed just to save a buck. And of them, the Lisbon Lounge Hostel on Rua do Cruxifico has the most sterling reputation. Fodor's and the New York Times are among its fans, and in 2008, the Sunday Times ranked it the number-one European boutique hostel. Local artists handle the daily operations and decorate the space with funky couches, lamps and other conversation pieces. In the summer, Lisbon Lounge's twin bed rooms are available for no more than €32 EUR per person (or about $43 USD) a night.

Where to Dine: Eat breakfast at Lisbon Lounge, since that meal is included in the price of your room. Then venture into the city for a hearty and affordable lunch. According to the Associated Press , "Lunch starting at about 1 p.m. goes for about $10 (7 euros) for two courses plus dessert, includes a glass of wine, a beer or bottled water." Cod, or bacalhau , and other seafood specialties are frequent menu items.

Your Big Splurge: Do as the Portuguese do, and spend a beach day in Cascais on the Portuguese Riviera. You can take a 45-minute train from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré station. The beaches are free, and the cost of the train ride is covered with the Lisboa Card.

This is the time of year to catch the metamorphosis of summer's green trees to fall's crimson foliage. And though the East Coast has a wealth of forests to delight you, our choice would be a several-days drive and hike through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Start out on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the town of Shenandoah to enter the park of the same name, then travel northeast on a stretch known as the Skyline Drive. This route's views are so picturesque that it even made our list of Best Fall Drives . But you can only peep leaves for so long, which is why our fall pick is also a two-parter that ends with a few days in Washington, D.C. The park is a little less than a three-hour drive northeast to our nation's capital. And after all that time driving through Shenandoah, you should be eager to get out and stretch your legs strolling along the National Mall and through the Smithsonian museums.

Getting Around: Leaf-peeping requires a car, and it will cost $15 to enter Shenandoah with one. The good thing is that entry pass doesn't expire for six days. Go to the national park's website for further details. Once you reach the District of Columbia, you can park your vehicle and walk around exploring the city's free sights. To get to the far-flung places, take the Washington Metro. One-way train fares cost between $1.60 and $5, depending on the distance and the time of day. Visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's website for more information.

Where to Stay: The most affordable lodging in Shenandoah would be the type you bring yourself. You could sleep in park campgrounds in a tent, just remember to reserve your spot online ahead of time and expect to pay around $20 a night and up to $140 for the week. The fee includes access to changing and laundry facilities on the campgrounds. By the time you arrive in D.C., there should be a surplus of money in the till to afford the city's lodging. There are a lot of enchanting bed and breakfasts in the Northwest district, like the well-reviewed and rated American Guest House , where you can stay for less than $200 a night. Also in Northwest, Hotel Tabard Inn offers comfortable rooms with a shared bath for between $120 and $145 a night.

Where to Dine: A dinner entrée in the park's fancy Spottswood Dining Room , found in the Big Meadows Lodge, will cost between $13 and $23. So take advantage of your portable hotel (a.k.a. your vehicle) and pack one or two coolers with snacks and picnic lunches. Supplement those supplies with groceries from Shenandoah's Wayside Food Stops . In our nation's capital, you can chow down at the food trucks. Eating a few meals on-the-go ensures you score some tasty treats without the expense of a sit-down meal. Bookmark Washingtonian magazine's list of the best options, which you can trace using Twitter.

Your Big Splurge: Swing by Charlottesville , Va. and the Monticello Wine Trail when leaving Shenandoah on your way to D.C. Tours and tastings at the vineyards run about $5 to $10 each. Visit the trail's website for more information on the area's vineyards.

This option isn't for everyone, but it is a solution to the challenge of staying within a $1,000 vacation allowance for seven days. And because there are so many places you could sail to, you really could travel at any time of year. Keep in mind that the price depends on your room and view, but it includes lodging and meals. Higher-end cruise companies might include the purchase of soft drinks, alcohol and airport transfers -- but many companies do not. Read the fine print when booking to determine exactly what's included in "all-inclusive."

In Winter: The time between January and March is known as the "wave period" in the cruise industry because this is when most travelers hit the seas. Sources like MSNBC insist that this is when cruise companies offer their best deals. To visit popular Caribbean ports in the Bahamas or Turks & Caicos , you'll probably leave from New Orleans , Galveston, Texas or somewhere in Florida. You'll sail with companies like Carnival , Royal Caribbean International and Norwegian Cruise Lines , which offer cruises that start around $300 per person for seven nights.

In Spring: The Mediterranean cruise season starts in April, so pick this month and lines like Holland America , Royal Caribbean International and Costa Cruises to visit places like Valencia and Barcelona in Spain or Naples and Savona in Italy. Rates start around $600 per person for seven nights. According to Smarter Travel , May is better than April to embark on a cruise to the Greek isles. Choose that month to book seven-night sails to Santorini , Corfu and Piraeus on lines like MSC Cruises for around $800.

In Summer: Smarter Travel also says that the time between June and August is warmest for an Alaskan cruise. Ships from Royal Caribbean International, Carnival and Celebrity Cruises leave from ports in Seattle , Vancouver, Canada and Seward and Whittier, Ala. to cruise to other Alaskan cities for seven nights. Your budget will be tight, since these cruises can start around $900 per person.

In Fall: If you're interested in cruising Mexico, avoid the Atlantic hurricane season of the early fall. Wait until November and leave on a Disney Cruise Line , Princess Cruises or Holland America ship from ports in Los Angeles or San Diego . Over the course of a seven-night cruise, you'll visit places like Puerto Vallarta , Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan , all for around $700 per person.

Family Vacations for $1,000

' data-srcset=

Aug 18, 2011

See recent posts by Caroline Costello

What kind of vacation can a family of four or five plan for just a grand? We tackled the $1,000 question and discovered that families on a limited budget can, in fact, embark on fun and fantastic vacations without shelling out thousands of dollars and delving into the kids’ college fund. Below are five budget- and kid-friendly resorts where families can enjoy affordable weekend getaways or weeklong summer escapes.

We’ve factored in meals, accommodations and activities to reach that $1,000 limit, however, transportation is up to you. But don’t worry — each resort is within reasonable driving distance of several major metropolitan areas, so getting there should be a cinch.

Great Wolf Lodge

In the Midwest: A Long Weekend at Great Wolf Lodge, Wisconsin Dells

What’s There : Great Wolf Lodge is a family-friendly resort set in Wisconsin Dells, the famed “Water Park Capital of the World,” where onsite activities are wonderfully abundant. There are five restaurants on the property, plus an indoor water park, a kids’ spa, a MagiQuest play area, a kids’ day camp, an arcade and an ever-changing schedule of daily organized activities. And since the lodge offers affordable packages that bundle breakfast, digs and activities for one flat discounted price, a family can easily wile away a long weekend at the resort without breaking the bank.

Getting There : Wisconsin Dells is roughly a four-hour drive from Chicago, a four-hour drive from Cedar Rapids, and a four-hour drive from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

The Bottom Line : Great Wolf Lodge offers a meal-inclusive plan, which saves families 40 percent on meals at onsite restaurants. Rates are cheapest during colder months, but, as Great Wolf Lodge’s water park is indoors, it’s a fantastic year-round destination. Rates include free water park passes, story time, a Clock Tower Show, the Wolf Walk and some additional activities.

Tyler Place Family Resort

In New England: A Long Weekend at The Tyler Place Family Resort, Vermont

What’s There : The Tyler Place Family Resort is a Family Vacation Critic Favorite, which means we’ve stayed there and determined that the property is an excellent choice for traveling kids and parents. The resort is nestled within 165 acres of lush woods in Highgate Springs, Vermont. The family-friendly amenities offered here are impressive. Affordable all-inclusive rates cover everything from kids’ clubs to activities.

Getting There : From Boston, the Tyler Place Family Resort is about a four-hour drive, and it’s about a 6.5-hour from New York City. Closer cities include Portland, Maine (a five-hour drive) and Montreal (about an hour away).

The Bottom Line : You can take advantage of the lowest rates by traveling in the spring, from mid-May to mid-June, and in September. Prices are all-inclusive. What’s covered? Let’s see — there are three meals a day, a private cottage with separate bedrooms for children, kids’ programs, activities (everything from yoga to arts and crafts to ice cream socials) and evening entertainments (think dance parties!). Rates start at $132 per adult, per night and $100 per child, ages 2.5 to 10th grade, bringing a two-night stay to under $1,000 for a family of four or a hint over $1,000 for a three-night stay.

Pelican Shores Inn in Oregon

In the Pacific Northwest: Four Nights at Pelican Shores Inn on the Oregon Coast

What’s There : Pelican Shores Inn is an intimate oceanfront property that features spacious multi-room suites for affordable prices. All-inclusive rates aren’t available here, and you won’t find an array of organized family activities onsite. But for families seeking a quiet beach vacation, the inn is an excellent choice, offering private access to the ocean, kitchens where parents can cook up budget-friendly meals and free breakfast.

Getting There : The resort is about a five-hour drive from Seattle and a two-hour drive from Portland.

The Bottom Line : Fireplace Suites sleep four comfortably, and have separate bedroom and living spaces and a small kitchen. Stop at the grocery store to stock up and cook your own lunches and dinners in the suite’s kitchen to save money. And there will be plenty of free things to do during your stay. Your family can enjoy free, direct access to the beach and an onsite heated pool.

Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge Exterior

In the Southeast: A Week at Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge, Florida

What’s There : Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge is our pick for an affordable Florida Keys family vacation. Completely free activities abound: There’s a playground, shuffleboard courts, a game room and miles of hiking trails. Spend your mornings fishing or snorkeling in the ocean, and enjoy free evening movies in the property’s rec room. Camping sites and RV hook-ups are available, but affordable lodge accommodations are available here as well.

Getting There : Big Pine Key is about a 40-minute drive from Key West, and a three-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale.

The Bottom Line : A family of four can stay for $169 per night in a roomy loft suite, which has a kitchen with a two burner stove, a loft with a bed, a trundle bed and a day bed, and an additional downstairs bed (the loft room sleeps up to six). Stay for a week and your total comes to about $1,064. Your food costs will probably bring your total to slightly more than a grand, but there’s no need to spend much money on activities at Big Pine. Save even more by packing a cooler and bringing groceries from home.

Residence Inn in La Jolla, California

In California: Three Nights at Residence Inn San Diego La Jolla

What’s There : San Diego is a family vacation hotspot, offering proximity to Sea World, LEGOLAND, the San Diego Zoo and heaps of beautiful beaches in one easy trip. Our pick for budget- and kid-friendly accommodations in the San Diego area? Head to Residence Inn San Diego La Jolla , which is located just 2 miles from La Jolla Shores Beach. The property has spacious suites featuring full kitchens and separate bedrooms, which are perfect for families of four or more.

Getting There : Residence Inn San Diego La Jolla is about two hours south of Los Angeles.

The Bottom Line : For $239 per night during the week in the spring, you can snag a pretty spacious suite in which a family of four will feel quite comfortable. The $239-a-night family bi-level suite includes two bedrooms (one with a queen bed and one with two queen beds), a sofa bed and a full kitchen with a dishwasher. A three-night stay with tax, plus the cost of parking ($18 per day), comes to roughly $975, leaving a few dollars for a trip to the grocery store — so you can use that kitchen, naturally. A free daily breakfast is included in the rates.

Want a vacation for under $1,000? Road trips are the answer for more Americans this summer

O n July 4, Jazmin Eusébio will pack into an SUV with her sister, her brother, her boyfriend, her mom and her dad, and embark on an 11-hour journey from San Jose, Calif., to Ensenada, Mexico.

Originally, the family of six had planned to fly to San Diego and drive a rental car for the remaining leg of the trip, to save money rather than flying direct. But when her parents found out it would cost about $500 per person for the 1.5-hour flight, they started to reconsider whether they would join. “We said, ‘Why don’t we make a road trip out of it?’” Eusébio told MarketWatch.

Such a crowded trip might sound like a lot for most people, “but we grew up doing a lot of road trips,” she said. Traveling by car rather than plane will save them thousands on flights, and they’ll save an additional $769 by not renting a car in San Diego. “All in all, that’s roughly $3,242 in savings,” according to Eusébio.

Many Americans are using similar money-saving tactics for their summer travel. Some 66% of American travelers are planning to take a road trip this summer, up from 56% last year, according to research by Deloitte. Most are traveling by road to save money, the report noted. When asked what downgrades they were making compared to last year, 28% of people said they are driving instead of flying.

Also, “travelers across all income groups had an increase in intentions to stay in RVs as the accommodation for their longest trip this summer,” said Stephen Rogers, managing director of Deloitte’s Consumer Industry Center.

Most Americans planning a summer road trip expect to drive 399 miles or less and spend less than $1,000 for their travels, according to a new survey by Experian

The cost of owning a vehicle has skyrocketed in recent years as prices for cars, auto repairs, and auto insurance have soared. The average car payment is now $766 a month , while auto insurance is $192 per month on average. Using their vehicles for summer travel gives drivers a way to get more value from their costly cars.

While the global travel industry is expecting a record year , higher-income households are largely fueling the travel boom. Those earning more than $100,000 are expected to account for 44% of travelers this year compared to 35% in 2023, according to Deloitte. Baby boomers are also expected to represent a larger share of travelers this summer (34%) compared to last year (28%), while millennials’ share is down to 30% (from 35% last year).

Yet across all income levels, people are hunting for deals, the Deloitte report said.

Driving instead of flying is the most common way (42%) that summer travelers plan to save money, according to a survey by NerdWallet earlier this year. For solo travelers planning trips that aren’t too far away, it is almost certainly more economical than flying, while for families and groups, riding together in one vehicle reduces costs significantly — on both short- and long-distance trips — compared to booking flights for several people, according to a separate analysis by NerdWallet.

Related (May 2024): Spirit and Frontier just scrapped some fees, but brace for extra charges on these 10 U.S. airlines

Per an analysis conducted by Deloitte for MarketWatch, the average cost of a plane ticket is $384.86, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics . For a family of four, that would add up to $1,547.44. The average distance of a passenger flight is 941 miles , or 1,882 miles for a round trip.

“Most families wouldn’t take an 1,800-mile road trip, but they’d spend $294 on gas if they did,” noted Deloitte’s Rogers. This calculation assumes they drove a midsize SUV that averaged 23 miles per gallon — so that’s 82 gallons for 1,882 miles at $3.593 per gallon . “Even with adding in an additional night or two of hotel accommodations, families would likely still save money,” Rogers said.

Still, road trips don’t save money for everyone — especially solo travelers. Individuals planning long, cross-country trips may find that flying can actually be cheaper when factoring in maintenance costs for the vehicle, NerdWallet said. As of February, airfare from Los Angeles to New York was about $257 for Fourth of July weekend, while driving would have cost $670 for gas and maintenance. (This estimate does not include expenses for hotels or food along the way).

Besides cost savings, Americans say road trips offer other benefits. Travelers in a survey commissioned by Michelin in February said the best parts of road trips were seeing new landscapes and scenery (50%), listening to music (43%), getting a break from their routine (26%), enjoying driving (25%) and trying local food along the way (24%).

The drawbacks of going by car: losing cell service (36%), needing to make frequent bathroom stops (35%) and passengers asking, “Are we there yet?” (27%), the Michelin survey found.

Road-trip season — aided this year by moderate gas prices, now $3.78 per gallon compared to $4.27 in 2022, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data — has already begun. Memorial Day weekend, widely considered to mark the beginning of summer travel, set a record for road travel this year with 38.4 million people traveling by car , according to AAA projections.

“People are prioritizing travel now more than ever, and budgeting their lives accordingly,” Aixa Diaz, an AAA spokesperson, told MarketWatch.

Any road trip comes with a litany of unpredictable factors: whether all the luggage will fit, traffic, and the fact that “we all have different music tastes — I don’t know who’s going to be in charge of the aux cord,” said Eusébio, the traveler from San Jose. Still, “we’re just really excited that we’re able to do this as a family,” she added.

If you are planning to take a road trip this summer, here are some tips to save money.

1. Comparison shop for gas. One of the biggest expenses on a road trip is fuel. Use apps like GasBuddy , AAA or even Google Maps to compare prices along your route.

2. Obey the speed limit to maximize fuel efficiency. Drivers get more miles per gallon driving at 55 miles per hour than at 65 mph or 75 mph, according to Consumer Reports .

3. Inspect your car and your tire pressure before you depart. Properly inflated tires improve fuel efficiency, according to Consumer Reports. The recommended tire pressure is listed on a door-jamb sticker.

4. Drive during off-peak hours. Not only will you save time, you’ll also reduce the amount of gas wasted sitting in traffic.

5. Pack the cooler. Eating at restaurants has become prohibitively expensive for many families, even with the deals that many fast-food chains are launching to bring cost-sensitive customers back to their dining rooms and drive-throughs. If you can, bring your own food, even if it’s just a few sandwiches, snacks and a simple breakfast. It will also likely be healthier than whatever you find at the highway rest stop.

How have higher prices affected you and your financial decisions? MarketWatch would like to hear from readers who want to share their experiences. You can write to us at [email protected] . A reporter may be in touch to learn more.

FAQs for an all-inclusive Bahamas vacation

Can you get all-inclusive packages for the bahamas.

Absolutely: From all-inclusive Bahamas wedding packages for your special day and Bahamas honeymoon all-inclusive packages for loved-up couples, through to great Bahamas all-inclusive vacation deals that don't cost a fortune, package vacations to the Bahamas come in many different forms. In short, you can choose from a wider range of Bahamas all-inclusive packages than you'd ever imagine in 2024. So, whether you're after an all-inclusive getaway to the Bahamas as a budget-friendly break from the daily grind or a Bahamas luxury vacation , there's doubtless a Bahamian package deal for you.

How does all-inclusive work in the Bahamas?

In principle, all-inclusive Bahamas vacation packages work the same way as travel packages to any other destination: You get your airfare (and rental car, if you like), your accommodation, your meals, and your activities all rolled into one. Booking your Bahamas all-inclusive with a flight saves you time and stress during the booking process and helps you know exactly how much your vacation is going to cost upfront—just like any other all-inclusive trip. The key difference with Bahamas all-inclusive trips, though, is that bright blue skies, glorious sunshine, and turquoise waters come as standard.

What is the average cost of a vacation to the Bahamas?

Bahamas all-inclusive vacations come in many different guises—and at many different price points: Some travelers are after ultra-luxe romantic resorts , whereas others are looking for kid-friendly trips that leave even the youngest guests satisfied. Of course, the costs of these accommodations can vary wildly, and that's before you even think about how timings and flights impact your outlay. In short, it's hard to pinpoint the average cost of a Bahamas all-inclusive vacation package exactly. As a guide, though, all-inclusive Bahamas vacation deals started from $550 in 2024.

How much does a 7-day trip to the Bahamas cost?

The cost of your all-inclusive trip to the Bahamas depends on countless factors, like when you go, where you stay, which airline you fly with, and how you spend your time when you're there. That's why it pays (literally) to plan your vacation carefully so you know exactly what your outlay's going to be. Consider booking your Bahamas all-inclusive vacation with airfare to get a great deal and make sure all your costs are clear upfront. That way, there are no hidden surprises down the line—and more Bahamian Dollars in your pocket for you to spend on those all-important souvenirs.

How many days in the Bahamas is enough?

Whether you like taking it slow, chilling out on the sands, and going for a paddle in the azure ocean, or ramping up the action with a boat trip, scuba-diving session, or horseback tour along the beach, you won't have any trouble filling 5 to 7 days on your Bahamas all-inclusive trip. As you can see, there's plenty to do in the Bahamas—so it's worth going for a decent stretch of time. Don't miss bustling Nassau and laid-back Freeport , either: Both towns are great places to pick up trinkets and stroll around soaking up the island vibes.

What parts of the Bahamas are among the best to stay at?

Where you stay in the Bahamas depends on how you like to spend your time: New Providence Island , home to the capital Nassau, is one of the most popular destinations for travelers looking for a great combination of vibrant urban nightlife and gorgeous beaches, for instance. If you're looking to get away from it all and unwind, Bahamas all-inclusive resorts in the Exumas are a much-loved choice, especially for newlyweds on an all-inclusive Bahamas honeymoon. This cluster of sparsely populated islands is home to the Bahamas' famous swimming pigs—and ocean views for days. Families, meanwhile, love the tourist hotspot of Paradise Island and its kid-friendly waterpark.

What are some of the best months to go to the Bahamas?

The tropical paradise of the Bahamas comes into its own between December and April, when warm, sunny weather is a near-certainty. This is also the most popular time for travelers to visit the Caribbean, though, which means prices can be higher during these months. Consider staying during the “shoulder seasons” of late November or early May to take advantage of great all-inclusive Bahamas vacation deals while the weather's still nice—and think about setting up an Expedia payment plan to spread the cost of your tropical getaway.

Is the Bahamas a good place for a family vacation?

Families looking for some downtime are sure to have a great time in the Bahamas. Little ones will love paddling in the turquoise surf, building sandcastles, and gorging themselves on a near-endless stream of ice creams. Older kids and teenagers aren't left out either: They can make the most of the freedom offered by an all-inclusive Bahamas vacation by grabbing dinner with new-found friends. Their parents, meanwhile, can rest assured that everyone's having a great time on their kid-friendly Bahamian adventure .

Which islands in the Bahamas are among the best for families?

The 30 or so inhabited islands in the Bahamas each have their own unique feel—but many of them are fantastic for kid-friendly vacations. Paradise Island is one of the most popular destinations for families, who love its array of all-inclusive Bahamas resorts designed with little ones in mind. If you're looking to keep things low-key, secluded Harbor Island is a great choice for laid-back child-friendly vacations: Its quiet bays offer beautiful spots for adults and children alike to relax and listen to the sound of the ocean.
