And when you’re experiencing a new destination, be it gloomy London or the white-sand beaches in St. Lucia , every moment counts. That’s why it’s important to have a few tried-and-true hair care products you can rely on to cut down your packing list and the time spent styling while on a trip. Since we all have different hair types and needs, we asked a dozen of our editors and favorite frequent travelers to share their own holy-grail hair products. They came back with recommendations for everything from double-duty balms to anti-frizz treatments and easy-to-use thermal brushes. Below, 17 of the best hair products to travel with, from trusted brands like Ouai, Biosilk, Ceremonia, and more.

Leave-in conditioner is essential for me when I’m traveling, as I tend to plan adventurous trips that put my hair through the ringer— surfing , camping , hiking , and long international flights that dry everything out—so I go heavy on thick conditioning products that can counteract all that exposure. Swedish brand Sachajuan makes products that fit the bill, and its leave-in conditioner (applied to wet/towel-dried hair) noticeably improved my hair during a busier-than-ever travel season; I swear it also extended the time I was able to go before needing a haircut. The bottle doesn’t meet carry-on size requirements at 8.4 ounces, but it’s liquid enough that you can easily pour it into a reusable travel-size bottle . — Megan Spurrell , senior editor

Give me Biosilk or give me death. No, really. There hasn’t been a hair-washing day in the last 15 years in which I, owner of a significant head of the stuff, haven’t used this saving grace product—even when I go to the hair salon. I apply a dime-sized dollop of the serum to my mane once it’s had about 30 minutes to towel dry, and almost immediately, it reduces my natural frizz by a factor of 10, rendering my hair shiny and healthy even once I begin to lay on the heat tools . Ordinarily, I draw my dose from an extra-large bottle, but I always remember to bring this nifty travel-size version along when I travel. When I’m spending a day in the sun, I cautiously lather my face and body in sunscreen, but I somehow always forget about my scalp. I regret this as soon as my scalp starts to peel and flake. I’m not a big hat wearer, so last summer I decided to try Supergoop’s Poof mineral part powder. The consistency is similar to baby powder or other dry shampoos I’ve used and it actually protects my scalp from the sun. It’s great for beach days and is compact enough to fit in my Dopp kit . TSA Travel Tips: Hair Products and Pat-Downs - What to Know and What to Expect

“I’ve never had a bad hair day,” said no one ever! Whether you style your hair curly or straight, wear weave or extensions, or wear your hair up or down, everyone has had those days where your hair will not fall into place as you hoped. Imagine traveling through the security checkpoint on your best hair day of any season, and having to go through additional screening of your hair. It can’t be my hair that caused the alarm? Could it?  Here are few tips and tricks you should know before you head out to the airport.

Know TSA’s Liquids Rule

We all have those “can’t leave home without them” necessities to include our go-to hair products. The good news is you CAN carry them on, but with a few stipulations. Liquids, including, gels, creams and aerosols are allowed in your carry-on bag, but only if they adhere to TSA’s 3-1-1 liquids rule. Whether you buy the travel size or save a few coins and place what you already have in a reusable travel size container, each container must be 3.4 ounces or less, stored in a 1-quart size bag, and 1 zip-top bag is allowed per person. You’ll have to place your liquids bag in a bin for screening, so for your convenience pack them in a place that’s easy to get to.

You can skip that step entirely by packing your liquids in your checked bag. Since there are no limits on the size or amount of liquids in your checked bag, your favorite full size shampoo and conditioner can fly, but let’s be honest, who wants to risk any messy spillage?

Remember these tips before you fly

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind before you arrive at the airport. Hair accessories such as bobby pins, metal clips, ties, wraps, and even bows may cause an alarm. This may also include clip-on extensions, wigs, toppers, and certain hair styles such as braids or a hair bun. To avoid any potential delays, it’s best to keep it simple while going through security. You can always style your hair to your liking after you’ve gone through screening and right before you board your flight.

What to expect during screening

You may be screened by a walk-through metal detector, an advanced imaging technology machine and/or a pat-down. If by chance your head region sets off an alarm during screening, then you will get a pat-down conducted by an officer of the same gender as your present yourself. Before the start of a pat-down, the officer will walk you through the process, which includes an officer using their hands to conduct a physical inspection of your hair to ensure that no prohibited items are being concealed. Reminder, communication is key!

• DO be sure to tell the TSA officer of any sensitivities or concerns you may have before the inspection.
• Don’t hesitate to ask the officer to use a new pair of gloves.
• D O remember that you can always request to speak with a supervisor or request a private screening accompanied by a companion of your choice.

O('Hair) Canada: Sixth alternate Sean O'Hair battles mono, canceled flight to shoot career-low 63 at RBC Canadian Open

Severe weather across Texas on Tuesday caused more than 1,000 canceled flights. Count Sean O’Hair’s flight among them.

The 41-year-old PGA TOUR veteran intended to travel from Lubbock, Texas, to Toronto in case of a late withdrawal at the RBC Canadian Open. He wasn’t expecting to get in. He entered the week as the sixth alternate but thought he should be there just in case. By Tuesday morning, a series of withdrawals pushed O’Hair into the field.

That’s when the hard part began. O’Hair had no choice but to wait out the storms in Texas overnight Tuesday. He drove five hours from Lubbock to Dallas on Wednesday morning and caught a flight to Toronto that arrived Wednesday night.

His 5:56 a.m. ET Thursday tee time at Hamilton Golf & Country Club was his first time seeing the property this week. Perhaps that should be O’Hair’s new strategy. He shot a first-round 63 to take a co-lead with Sam Burns through the morning wave. It was his lowest round as an individual in more than 10 years on the PGA TOUR.

“It’s been so long since I shot a good score like that out here,” O’Hair said. “I was pretty exhausted, so 7-under is pretty surprising.”

It was a needed performance at a needed time. O’Hair has split time between the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour this year with limited success. He’s appeared in five Korn Ferry Tour events and made just one cut. He’s made the cut in his four TOUR appearances but ranks 188th in the FedExCup. And he’s missed the last two weeks battling mono.

He’s feeling better now, but his health and travel issues set the context for a first round without expectations. O’Hair hadn’t played well and didn’t expect that to change considering Thursday’s circumstances.

“I’m probably more surprised than anybody. I don’t know, maybe I play my best golf that way,” O’Hair said.

O’Hair relied heavily on his caddie, T. Jay Fairlie, for club decisions off the tee and aiming lines. Fairlie arrived without issue earlier this week and spent the practice rounds walking the course in preparation. While O’Hair finished third in the 2006 RBC Canadian Open hosted at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, he couldn’t recall much of the course, especially considering its recent renovation.

Yet, he looked like a course member navigating the greens. He needed just 25 putts to complete his first round, holing 125 feet of putts en route to five birdies, one eagle and no bogeys. He gained more than four strokes on the greens, the best in the field through the morning wave.

He stuck his approach to 7 feet on the par-4 third and made the putt for birdie. He added another on the next hole, sinking a 27-foot birdie. He made the turn in 3-under 32 after a close approach left him just a few feet for birdie on the ninth. O’Hair holed three putts outside 10 feet on the back nine, including a 27-foot eagle on the par-5 17th to card 7-under 63, tying his career-lowest round in an official non-team event on TOUR (2013 Shriners Children’s Open).

“I like to be prepared,” O’Hair said, “I just, I didn't have an option. I think when you don't really have an option and you're kind of making a big deal about it, it almost hurts you, so I kind of just said, look, I don't really expect a whole lot today, I haven't really been playing that great either, so to come out here and shoot the score I did today was definitely kind of a shocker for me. Ride it out I guess as long as I can.”
