Cheers To Reykjavík
REYKJAVIK CRAFT BEERS, ICELANDIC TAPAS AND THE INSIDE SCOOP! If you are into local beers, local foods , and getting inside knowledge on Reykjavík and Iceland, then this is the tour for you. This popular tour is based at Bryggjan Brugghús in the heart of Reykjavík Old Harbour and is perfect for foodies and beer nerds, not to mention those wanting to learn a little more about Icelandic culture, customs, and current affairs.
Your host will mix and match the history of Icelandic ales and modern craft beers with stories about how Icelanders managed to survive in this harsh environment of the far north. The event is informal and your host will discuss anything and everything under the Arctic sun, take questions and give honest advice about traveling and enjoying Iceland.
During the event, you will taste at least six different beers and ales , each drink paired with a locally sourced and prepared Icelandic course, served “tapas” style . You will taste fish caught earlier the same day from the pier outside the window. Also on the menu is Icelandic lamb. From Iceland — Cheers To Reykjavík! A Boozy Tour Of Iceland's Capital
Cheers to reykjavík a boozy tour of iceland’s capital.
Published February 25, 2017
![cheers to reykjavik tour cheers to reykjavik tour](https://i0.wp.com/grapevine.is/wp-content/uploads/BIC2629-Edit_by_bicnick.jpg?fit=1000%2C667&quality=99&ssl=1 )
I’m not one to turn down a beer, let alone six pints paired with some Icelandic cuisine. ‘Cheers To Reykjavik’ started this summer offering you the opportunity to drink, eat and meet other tourists led by an outgoing Icelandic couple.
![_bic2594_by_bicnick Dóra and Arnar - your hosts](https://i0.wp.com/grapevine.is/wp-content/uploads/BIC2594-Edit_by_bicnick.jpg?w=602&h=401&quality=99&ssl=1)
The first stop was Bryggjan Brugghús — a bar in the Old Harbour — at about 6pm to a calm yet full table of people talking about the tours they went on that day. It’s easy to spot that Dóra is the host of the evening as she greets us with a welcoming smile. I meet a group of strangers, as with any tour, but it’s the first time I’ve experienced a tour that feels like a casual get together with friends.
![_bic0808_by_bicnick _bic0808_by_bicnick](https://i0.wp.com/grapevine.is/wp-content/uploads/BIC0808_by_bicnick.jpg?w=401&h=267&quality=99&ssl=1)
We learn about Icelandic culture, customs and current affairs while having both Icelandic ales and craft beers. All the beers are made in the micro brewery Ölvisholt, located on the South Coast of Iceland. They have all kinds of different beers. For example Forseti, which we also got to try. Forseti means “president” and because of Iceland’s notoriety in gender equality, they of course made one for each sex. Alongside the beer, we got to taste fish and Icelandic lamb with each drink, served in several tapas dishes.
![_bic3329_by_bicnick _bic3329_by_bicnick](https://i0.wp.com/grapevine.is/wp-content/uploads/BIC3329_by_bicnick-1.jpg?w=401&h=267&quality=99&ssl=1)
Dóra knew how to please a crowd without coming across as too formal or too rehearsed. “That’s the point,” she said, after the tour when I spoke with her. “It’s supposed to be just like you’re meeting friends. My partner and I are lucky to have worked as actors and musicians because we are used to being open and we can try to create the environment where people can just talk to each other.”
Dóra had been thinking about a fun way to attract tourists into Icelandic customs for a while. Luckily her idea was supported by and helped brought to life by Reykjavík Sightseeing. “What I like most about it is, I’m usually on stage working and there’s this fourth wall in front of me, where I can’t communicate or interact with the audience,” Dóra said. “But here, I’m not acting and it’s like a day off and I’m connecting to the people. What I get the most out of it is just to get in contact with new people.”

Description
A beer a day keeps the doctor away.
If you are into local beers , local foods and the inside knowledge of Reykjavík and Iceland then this is the tour for you. This popular tour is based at the Bryggjan Steakhouse in the heart of Reykjavík Old Harbour and is perfect for foodies and beer nerds , not to mention those that are looking to learn a little more about the Icelandic culture , customs and current affairs .
Your Icelandic host will mix and match the history of Icelandic ales and modern craft beers with stories about how Icelanders survived in this hard land surrounded by turbulent seas in the high north. The event is informal and your host will discuss anything and everything under the arctic sun, take questions and give honest advice about traveling and enjoying Iceland.
During the event, you will taste at least six different beers and ales, each drink paired with a locally sourced and prepared Icelandic sampling course, served “Tapas” styled.

Jack Nicklaus makes 16th hole at Memorial more fair; Rob Lowe channels Steve Young
![cheers to reykjavik tour](https://www.dispatch.com/gcdn/presto/2020/09/14/NCOD/5814cefc-689a-4260-879a-f7cbc8a0c033-robofo.jpg?crop=914,914,x183,y0&width=48&height=48&format=pjpg&auto=webp)
A familiar voice rang out as Jack and Barbara Nicklaus wheeled their golf cart past the 17th tee Wednesday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
“Love No. 16,” Matt Kuchar yelled from No. 17 tee.
Nicklaus waved thanks and kept driving, presumably satisfied that at least one PGA Tour player was giving his redesign of the maligned par-3 a thumb’s-up.
Not all players were as enthusiastic with their praise.
“It’s better than it was. Put it that way,” said Jordan Spieth, one of several players who met with Nicklaus after the 2023 Memorial Tournament to share their misgivings.
If Nicklaus was looking for a universal ringing endorsement of his changes, well, professional golfers seldom are 100% thrilled when confronted with a challenging hole.
And No. 16 is dastardly, forcing right-handed players to draw the ball – lefties must fade it – 218 yards into a narrow green with water on the left and a bunker back right. It has undergone several transformations through the years, but none has satisfied everyone.
No hole in the 49-year history of the Memorial Tournament has been criticized by players like the 16th, which took heat in the early days of the event when George Archer complained that no par 3 should be longer than 200 yards.
The complaints reached another level last year when several players took dead aim at the hole.
“It’s a stupid hole,” Westerville resident Jason Day said, echoing the sentiments of many.
Nicklaus took the feedback to heart , changing the hole by moving the tee about 30 yards to the right, which took more of the greenside pond out of play. More significantly, he removed a bunker just to the right of the green, replacing it with a grassy slope.
What hasn’t changed is the firmness of the green, which is difficult to hold when tee shots land past the first 20 feet. That is after Nicklaus reshaped the putting surface in 2021 to help keep balls from bouncing off the green even on good shots.
“I’ve always really liked the hole,” Sahith Theegala said, before shooting holes in it. “But there does come a point where you’re hitting a shot and you feel you have no chance of holding the green, whether you hit a good shot or a bad shot, there needs to be a change made. I’ve landed a few balls like four paces on, in the middle of the green, and they went over the back of the green.”
The recent alterations Nicklaus made won’t change that, Theegala said.
“But because the angle changed if you hit a draw in there you can land it on the green and get one close, whereas before the angle was too straight on to be able to do that,” he said. “You’re going to see some guys hit some pretty big draws into the hole, taking less club, just because that bailout area front right is pretty easy now. Before, you pretty much chalk it up to a 4 and move on. It’s easier and a better hole now.”
Collin Morikawa explained that moving the tee to straighten the hole actually has less impact than Nicklaus removing the front-right bunker.
“The bunker was never bad, but it’s not like you wanted to be in it,” he said. “The little runoff on the side isn’t as drastic as I thought it would be, so you could actually putt it or chip it across the green. It’s still a tough tee shot, don’t get me wrong. You’re still hitting 7-iron, 6-iron, 5-iron, depending on the wind, to a small, narrow green that doesn’t have a lot of depth.”
Xander Schauffele agreed with Morikawa that removing the bunker makes the 16th more gettable.
“It’s more fair now,” he said. “Taking that bunker out allows you to be as defensive as you would like, without sort of laying up with a 50-yard pitch shot. You’re going to see a lot of balls end up in that little area, especially those front two pins.”
Max Moldovan pressed into marker service
Max Moldovan , who last week completed his career at Ohio State, will tee it up early at the Memorial as a non-competing marker who heads out at 7:40 a.m. with PGA Tour player Davis Thompson.
A marker plays when there is an uneven number of players in the field, going off in the first group of the day in a twosome to keep the pros scorecard and provide company and pace for the round. He does not post a score.
Moldovan finished his OSU career with a 71.25 scoring average, lowest in program history. He finished second alternate at Monday’s U.S. Open qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, and waits to see if a spot opens in next week’s national championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Rob Lowe mistaken for Steve Young
As he approached the first tee, actor Rob Lowe suddenly turned into a Hall of Fame quarterback. At least that’s how the starter who announced player names at the Workday Golden Bear pro-am saw it.
“This way, Steve,” the starter said, mistaking Lowe for former NFL quarterback Steve Young.
Despite sharing some facial resemblance, Lowe is 5 feet 10 and probably 160 pounds. Young is 6-2, 216.
Lowe teamed with defending Memorial champion Viktor Hovland on the first nine holes and Nick Taylor on the back.
Chris Pratt, meanwhile, did not get mistaken for Star Lord, his character in the “Guardian of the Galaxy” and “Avengers” movies. But the actor did receive one of the loudest cheers of the day after sinking a long putt at 16. He played with Rory McIlroy on the front, Jason Day on the back and Peyton Manning for all 18 holes.
Manning has become a Memorial pro-am regular, which probably explains why he instinctively knew which flavor of “famous Muirfield Village” milkshake to order after his round.
“Buckeye,” he said to the milkshake maker.
