Hyderabad man faints from laughing too hard, doctor shares diagnosis

A hyderabad man was rushed to the hospital after he fainted from laughing too hard. he experienced laughter-induced syncope, according to his treating doctor..

Laughter might be the best medicine, but for a 53-year-old man, it turned out to be a visit to the hospital.

Neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar shared an incident on X about his patient "Mr Shyam" (name changed) who fainted after laughing for several minutes while watching a comedy show and drinking a cup of tea.

"Mr Shyam lost control over the teacup and the cup fell off his hand. Soon afterwards, his body leaned to one side, and he fell off the chair on to the ground. He had lost consciousness, and his daughter noticed a few jerky movements of his hands," wrote Dr Kumar on X.

Laughter is the best medicine, however, in case of a 53-year-old, laughter resulted in a visit to emergency department 53-year-old Mr Shyam (name changed) was enjoying a nice evening with his family over a cup of tea. While Mr Shyam recovered after a few minutes of hospitalisation, he had no memory of what happened.

In his post, Dr Kumar mentioned the triggers for this rare laughter-induced syncope to be excessive laughter, prolonged standing, and excessive physical exertion.

"In addition, I asked him to keep well-hydrated. I asked him to lie down, if he felt dizzy or if he had a sense of blacking out (symptoms of pre-syncope), so that the blood flow to brain would not reduce (in case of reduction in blood pressure)," the neurologist wrote.

In this case, no medication was prescribed. However, a heart evaluation was advised.

WHAT IS LAUGHTER-INDUCED SYNCOPE?

Laughter-induced syncope, while rare, is a real phenomenon.

According to Dr Ashray V, Consultant, Emergency Medicine, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, it's essentially fainting triggered by intense laughter.

This syncope (temporary loss of consciousness) is uncommon and happens in people with predisposing factors, such as underlying heart conditions or neurological disorders.

"The cardiovascular and nervous systems are primarily impacted during laughter-induced syncope. Individuals experiencing this condition may feel lightheaded or dizzy before losing consciousness briefly. Recovery usually occurs within a few seconds to minutes, but the individual may feel disoriented or fatigued later the episode," said Dr Ashray.

Early signs of this syncope include dizziness and shortness of breath. Stop laughing once you recognise these symptoms. Sit down or lie down with both legs and feet lifted above the body along with deep breaths to stabilise the blood pressure and heart rate, Dr Ashray suggested.
