Film Review: ‘Fidelio: Alice’s Journey’

In shadowing a female engineer at sea, this seductive love triangle toys with conservative notions of desire against a seldom-examined, male-dominated work environment.

'Fidelio: Alice's Journey' Review: Sex and Consequences at Sea

Easily the most fascinating film to come along and challenge traditional gender roles in the past year, “Fidelio: Alice’s Journey” chronicles a sexually liberated female sailor’s voyage of self-discovery aboard an old freighter, where she fights for respect among the randy crew — including the handsome captain, with whom she shares a romantic past — while her faithful partner anxiously awaits her return. Anchored by a courageous lead performance and steered by a fresh-voiced distaff helmer showing impressive command of both atmosphere and subtext, Lucie Borleteau’s emotionally complex, logistically daunting debut should find receptive berth among discriminating fests and specialty venues.

Likened by her landlocked lover, Felix (Anders Danielsen Lie), to a mermaid at several points, Alice (Ariane Labed) seems to become a different person when at sea. The Alice he knows is passionate and attentive, almost girlishly smitten with her man. Then duty calls, intruding upon their idyll as Alice is drawn to the ocean, where she must toughen her skin in order to survive for weeks at a time as the lone female assigned to a vast cargo ship called the Fidelio — whose none-too-subtle allusions to faithfulness are not only central to Borleteau’s examination, but also echoed by a diary she finds in her cabin.

The journal belongs to the aging vessel’s previous engineer, whom Alice has been called in to replace. Reading her predecessor’s most intimate (and frequently carnal) confessions, she takes her post as a marine mechanic amid so many sex-starved men, fending off their snide jokes and inappropriate advances from the moment she steps aboard. And yet, being a mature, 30-year-old woman, and French, she reserves the right to engage with her colleagues without that meaning they are suddenly entitled to objectify her. Naturally, this makes for a complex work environment — especially since the Fidelio’s captain, Gael (Melvil Poupaud), is someone she hooked up with years earlier as a cadet.

Popular on Variety

Inviting an air of mystery into this foreign, blue-collar world, where human characters are dwarfed by massive machinery and accidents can have fatal consequences, Borleteau constructs the film’s interpersonal dynamics more from body language than from explicitly spoken dialogue. Besides, both the boat and the ocean supply commotion enough, from the constant white-noise churn of waves below to the low, steady rumble of the engines, faithfully reproduced in the robust sound design, which completes the almost documentary illusion that this elegantly lensed widescreen pic was shot at sea.

The film itself was launched at the  Locarno Film Festival , which favors projects whose artistic sensibilities tend to flounder in the commercial marketplace. “Fidelio” happens to be more accessible than most, but could still prove challenging beyond its native France, where it was released to generally positive reviews the day before Christmas. In the absence of eloquent interpersonal interactions (complicated enough by the conflicting languages spoken by the ship’s crew), audiences must pay careful attention to subtle cues: Alice is outgoing and openly flirtatious with her colleagues, but icy at first toward Gael. In short order, however, that awkwardness melts to reveal a vulnerable woman still quite conflicted about the memory of the attraction they once shared — and rightfully wary of how it could threaten the good thing she has back home.

Like her male colleagues, she’s susceptible to loneliness when away from port for too long — more than that, for the film unabashedly acknowledges that her yearning is sexual. Watching “Fidelio,” it’s hard not to remark how seldom contemporary filmmakers allow women to be the proactive agents of desire. As a narrative creation, Alice doesn’t exist merely to excite male characters. We experience the movie through her eyes, juggling the temptations put before her, pining for the partner she left behind and dealing with the consequences of her actions, all running parallel to her unique professional activities. It’s a refreshing depiction set in a truly unique setting. While the demands of shooting aboard a ship were no doubt great, so, too, are its rewards.

Fidelio, Alice's Journey

A powerful first feature from a French filmmaker to watch, this is about a young woman toughing it out below decks on an ocean voyage

Trevor Johnston

Time Out says

It’s unusual to see a 30-year-old woman as an engineer on a cargo ship, but Alice (Ariane Labed) is a tough pro, holding her own among the otherwise all-male crew in this slice-of-life French drama. Alice’s sweet Norwegian boyfriend is patiently waiting for her in Marseille, but when the captain of her latest posting turns out to be an old flame, staying true just got a lot more challenging. Lucie Borleteau’s remarkably assured first feature intrigues with its doc-style observation of the daily routines, sudden stresses and eccentric rituals of life on an ocean-going workhorse. Yet it never loses sight of the aching, sensual undertow prompting its protagonist’s sometimes impulsive behaviour. True, Borleteau might have stoked the flames a bit higher, but the languor of the storytelling draws us in, and Greek actress Labed is both convincing in French and a strong-yet-vulnerable presence capable of holding an entire movie together.

LOCARNO 2014 Competition

Fidelio: Alice’s Journey offers a journey through rough waters

by  Giorgia Del Don

11/08/2014 - With her first film, in the running for the Golden Leopard in Locarno, French director Lucie Borleteau takes a shot at a skipper of a freighter inhabited by old and new ghosts

Fidelio: Alice’s Journey offers a journey through rough waters

While Lucie Borleteau steps confidently into the shoes of captain to direct with a sure hand a film that she strongly believes in, actress, Ariane Labed on the other hand plays to perfection the role of bewitching mermaid in yet unprecedented tones. The French actress awarded in 2010 in Venice with the Coppa Volpi for the movie Attenberg   [ + see also: film review trailer interview: Athina Rachel Tsangari film profile ] , has somehow unwittingly become the face of the 67th edition of the Locarno Film Festival . Her discreet and enigmatic presence has aroused the interest of the numerous viewers who had the opportunity to see her not just in the young and fresh Fidelio: Alice’s Journey   [ + see also: trailer interview: Lucie Borleteau film profile ] , but also in the Croatian Love Island   [ + see also: film review trailer film profile ] by Jasmila Zbanic (screened in Piazza Grande) .

lessismore_apply_writers_directors_articles

Alice is a sailer, a rather unusual profession for a woman but one which fits her like a glove. Without falling into the dead realization that a woman who does a “man’s” job should have male characteristics, Lucie Borleteau simply portrays a woman (and not women) who feels fulfilled doing a job she loves, one that’s perfectly suited to her erratic nature. Alice is engaged to Felix who awaits her on the mainland while she works onboard the old freight named “Fidelio”. An unexpected third wheel creeps in between the two, the skipper Gaël (the fitting Melvil Poupaud ) who is none other than the young sailor’s first great love. In the cabin occupied by her predecessor who recently died onboard, Alice discovers a notebook containing diary entries, a slightly disturbing mix of technical aspects concerning the freight, sexual conquests and melancholic reflections on a loveless life. The diary in a way serves as an unexpected link between the life of Alice and the “old” sea dog, revealing to her aspects of her own life that are difficult to face. Torn between a powerful past love that she could never fully enjoy, the security of a stable relationship and her sometimes irrational desires, Alice risks going under, overpowered by the ghosts that linger onboard the Fidelio.

If Lucie Borleteau’s intention was to analyze women’s desires, her first film would certainly not have had had the same freshness, rather she would most definitely have gotten lost in overly simplistic and stereotypical realizations about the so-called modern need for polygamy. On the contrary, she seeks to offer us the portrait of a young woman, based on a real character: a close friend of hers who entered the Merchant Navy Academy. Alice doesn’t claim to be the archetype of modern woman, Alice is simply herself, she follows her insticts which at times may be prone to caricature but, deep down are simply sincere. Fidelio: Alice’s Journey , as the director herself says, is “a variation on marriage”, the story of a potential amorous relationship that you can either identify with or reject but, in any case it (fortunately) doesn’t have the pretext of being universal and that makes our cruise on the Fidelio rather enjoyable.

Fidelio: Alice’s Journey is a co-production by Apsara Films , Why Not Productions and ARTE France Cinéma .

Fidelio: Alice’s Journey

Review by David Jenkins @daveyjenkins

fidelio alice's journey sub indo

Directed by

Lucie Borleteau

Anders Danielsen Lie Ariane Labed Melvil Poupaud

Anticipation.

Always interested to see what Ms Labed is up to.

She's great in this, though towers above the material.

In Retrospect.

You can see Labed taking over the world in a few years.

Greek actress Ariane Labed shines in this otherwise routine nautical drama of sexual self-fulfilment.

I f the quality of storyline and intensity of drama had been anywhere near the high level of its lead performance by the Greek actress Ariane Labed, then we really might have been on to something with Fidelio: Alice’s Journey . This sensible, sensual and slow burning romance is like an Emmanuaelle stripped of all its lurid passion, leaving little but cold intellectualising about desire, sex and the nature of long-term coupling.

Labed is Alice, the sole female engineer on a freighter who is forced into a long-distance relationship with her Scandinavian land-lubbing boyfriend (Anders Danielsen Lie). They email, they Skype, they pine for one another in various silly ways, but the fact of the matter is that neither party is being truly satisfied with this set-up, and so Alice decides to strike up an arrangement with the ship’s captain (Melvil Poupaud) where he regularly visit her quarters for dirty talk and all the rest.

Much of the film takes place on this ugly vessel, and director Lucie Borleteau and cinematographer Simon Beaufils, don’t come up with a way of imbuing this space with any real atmosphere or character. It even sometimes feels like they’re on a television set when they’re down conducting sexually frank chats in the mess hall. There’s some clunky plot foreshadowing in the early stages when we see just how dangerous working in a ship’s engine room can be, with lower-downs ordered into dangerous situations by unfeeling higher-ups. Indeed, the film opens on a death, which appears to resonate deeply with Alice and may be the reason that she decides to fulfil her insatiable sexual appetite while the getting’s good.

It’s all very middle brow, with much of the dialogue skewing away from naturalism in order to force direct discussions on the film’s broad themes. The remainder of the ensemble, who come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, work well together, and they certainly help when it comes to making Alice’s decision-making process a little more fraught with social and physical peril.
